Continuing from the part 1 (Shi et al., 2022) this paper presents an experimental investigation of transient void fraction and bubble statistics in a highly turbulent breaking bore with Fr1=2.4. The measurements were conducted using a combination of dual-tip phase-detection probes and an ultra-high-speed video camera. The enclosed bubble detection technique (EBDT) used the synchronised probe and camera signals to provide the contour of instantaneous void fraction in the bore roller. The ensemble-averaged void fraction was derived, and compared to analytical solutions of air diffusion models. The bubble statistics were characterised by the bubble clustering properties, pseudo bubble count rate and bubble size spectrum. The clustering data showed the non-random bubble grouping in the shear layer, and the bubble size distributions N(r) followed a commonly adopted bubble break-up model: N(r)∝r−m, where r was the equivalent bubble radius in the present study. Due to extensive research efforts within the past thirty years, the mechanisms by which bubbles transfer energy during pool boiling are relatively well understood and have various applications in reactors, rockets, distillation, air separation, refrigeration and power cycles. In this paper, CFD analysis of heat transfer characteristics in nucleate pool boiling of saturated water in atmospheric conditions is performed in order to find out the influence of heat flux intensity on pool boiling dynamics. The investigation is carried out for four cases of different heat flux intensities and obtained results for velocity fields of liquid and void fractions are discussed. Grid independent test is also performed to improve the accuracy of calculation. In this way, complete picture of two-phase mixture behaviour on heated wall is represented.

Void fraction is an essential parameter for understanding the interfacial structure, and heat and mass transfer mechanisms in various gas-liquid flow systems. It becomes critically important to accurately measure void fraction as advanced high fidelity two-phase flow models require high-quality validation data. However, void fraction measurement remains a challenging task to date due to the complexity and rapid-changing characteristic of the gas-liquid boundary flow structure. This study aims to develop an advanced void fraction measurement system based on x-ray and fast line detector technologies. The dissertation has covered the major components necessary to develop a complete measurement system. Spectral analysis of x-ray attenuation in two-phase flow has been performed, and a new void fraction model is developed based on the analysis. The newly developed pixel-to-radial conversion algorithm is capable of converting measured void fraction along with the detector array to the radial distribution in a circular pipe for a wide range of void fraction conditions. The x-ray system attains the radial distributions of key measurable factors such as void fraction and gas velocity. The data are compared with the double-sensor conductivity probe and gas flowmeter for various flow conditions. The results show reasonable agreements between the x-ray and the other measurement techniques. Finally, various 2-D tomography algorithms are implemented for the non-axisymmetric two-phase flow reconstruction. A comprehensive summary of classical absorption tomography for the two-phase flow study is provided. An in-depth sensitivity study is carried out using synthetic bubbles, aiming to investigate the effect of various uncertainty factors such as background noise, off-center shift, void profile effect, etc. The sensitivity study provides a general guideline for the performance of existing 2-D reconstruction algorithms.

Experimental study on steam-water two phase vertical and inclined upward flow (15–90°) was performed in a rectangular channel with cross section of 17 mm × 10 mm under atmospheric pressure to investigate the phase distribution and the average void fraction in the cross section which were obtained from the local void fraction measurement by a conductivity probe. The inlet superficial velocities of the steam and water varied from 0.72 to 3.85 m/s and from 0.11 to 0.3 m/s respectively. A high speed camera was used to identify the flow patterns. Experimental results show that the phase distribution curves are significantly affected by channel orientation and the average void fraction first decreases and then increases with the increase of orientation. Based on the drift-flux model, two parameters, namely, the distribution parameter (C0) and the drift velocity (Ugm) have been studied in detail. Both the distribution parameter and the drift velocity are found to be functions of orientation. The Westinghouse FRIGG facility, in Vasteras/Sweden, is dedicated to the measurement of critical power, stability and pressure drop in fuel rod bundles under BWR operating conditions (steady-state and transient). The facility is particularly relevant to test modern BWR fuel designs which typically have complex features, such as part-length rods and mixing vanes that make the flow heterogeneous and challenging to accurately simulate (e.g. using sub-channel analysis codes or CFD tools). In order to support the validation of advanced thermal-hydraulics codes for detailed BWR fuel assembly simulation, new local instrumentation techniques have been tested at the FRIGG facility for the measurement of two-phase dynamic pressure (Pitot tubes) and high time resolution phase detection (optical sensor). The optical sensors were custom-made by RBI Instrumentation for the FRIGG facility and optimized for annular two-phase flow (drop/steam) under BWR operating conditions. This new instrumentation was successfully tested and allows the first-time measurement, under BWR operating conditions, of relevant two-phase flow parameters such as the local void fraction in the steam core, the local drop/steam velocity, the volumetric interfacial area, the drop collision frequency and the assessment of drop size distribution during BWR steady-state and transient operations., QC 20180731

Two different series of biobased polyethylene (BioPE) were used for the manufacturing of biocomposites, complemented with thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fibers. The intrinsic hydrophilic character of the TMP fibers was previously modified by grafting hydrophobic compounds (octyl gallate and lauryl gallate) by means of an enzymatic-assisted treatment. BioPE with low melt flow index (MFI) yielded filaments with low void fraction and relatively low thickness variation. The water absorption of the biocomposites was remarkably improved when the enzymatically-hydrophobized TMP fibers were used. Importantly, the 3D printing of BioPE was improved by adding 10% and 20% TMP fibers to the composition. Thus, 3D printable biocomposites with low water uptake can be manufactured by using fully biobased materials and environmentally-friendly processes.

Analytical and theoretical discussions validated by experimental investigations are presented to comprehensively study the relation between the geometrical parameters, such as the dimensionless standoff distance and nozzle geometry, and the cavity potential energy, and void fraction to improve the performance of submerged cavitating water jets. The force generated by the collapse of cavitation clouds was employed to initiate cavitation erosion in copper test samples under various hydrodynamic and geometrical conditions. The nozzle diameter and the separation distance between the nozzle and the specimen were varied in order to determine the optimal geometrical configuration, which leads to maximal erosion rate. The damaged specimens were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained results - along with selected, previously published works from the literature - verify the analytically derived formulas, which emphasize the connection between the dimensionless standoff distance, and the cavitation intensity, potential energy, void fraction, and indicate the existence of an optimal dimensionless standoff distance for maximal erosion rate. Formulas to conveniently compare the efficiency of a cavitating jet based on energy consumption and dimensionless standoff distance are also presented and demonstrated. The influence of nozzle diameter and standoff distance on the kinetic energy and the specific energy consumption was clearly observed.

The appropriate characterization of the two-phase flow has been recently considered as a topic of interest at industrial level. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one of the techniques used for this analysis. Commonly, the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) model and the Eulerian model are used to model the two-phase flow. The mathematical formulations of these models cause differences in their convergence, computational time and accuracy. This article describes the differences between these two models for applications in the two-phase upward-flow. In order to accomplish this objective, the CFD models were validated with experimental results. This study modeled six experiments with an orthogonal (butterfly) grid. As a result, the Eulerian model shows mean square errors (13.86%) lower than the VOF model (19.04%) for low void fraction flows (< 0.25). Furthermore, it was demonstrated that Eulerian model performance is independent from grid, spending less computational time than the VOF model. The evolution of damage in geared components manufactured from steel sheets was investigated, to analyse the influence of damage caused by the sheet-bulk-metal forming. Due to the inhomogeneous and multi-axial deformation in the investigated parts, different aspects such as the location-dependent shape and size of voids are analysed by means of various microscopic methods. In particular, a method to characterize the state of damage evolution, i. e. void nucleation, growth and coalescence using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is applied. The investigations reveal a strong dependence of the void area fraction, shape of voids and thus damage evolution on the loading mode. The microstructural analysis is complemented with FEM simulations using material models which consider the characteristics of the void evolution. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Measuring void fraction distribution in two-phase flow has been a challenging task for many decades because of its complex and fast-changing interfacial structure. In this study, a non-intrusive X-ray measurement system is developed and calibrated to mitigate this challenge. This approach has several advantages over the conventional methods such as the multi-sensor conductivity probe, wire-mesh sensor, impedance void meter, or direct optical imaging. The X-ray densitometry technique is non-intrusive, insensitive to flow regime changes, capable of measuring high temperature or high-pressure flows, and has reasonable penetration depth. With the advancement of detector technology, the system developed in this work can further achieve high spatial resolution (100 micron per pixel) and high temporal resolution (1000 frames per second). This work mainly focuses on the following aspects of the system development: establishing a geometrical model for the line detector system, conducting spectral analysis for X-ray attenuation in two-phase flow, and performing calibration tests. The geometrical model has considered the measurement plane, geometry of the test-section wall and flow channel, relative position of the X-ray source and detector pixels. By assuming axisymmetry, an algorithm has been developed to convert void fraction distribution along the detector pixels to the radial void profile in a circular pipe. The X-ray spectral analysis yielded a novel prediction model for non-chromatic X-rays and non-uniform structure materials such as the internal two-phase flow which contains gas, liquid and solid wall materials. A calibration experiment has been carried out to optimize the detector conversion factor for each detector pixels. Finally, the data measured by the developed X-ray system are compared with the double-sensor conductivity probe and gas flow meter for sample bubbly flow and slug flow conditions. The detection of bubbles in liquid metals is important for many technical applications. The opaqueness and the high temperature of liquid metals set high demands on the measurement system. The high electrical conductivity of the liquid metal can be exploited for contactless methods based on electromagnetic induction. We will present a measurement system which consists of one excitation coil and a pickup coil system on the opposite sides of the pipe. With this sensor we were able to detect bubbles in a sodium flow inside a stainless steel pipe and bubbles in a column filled with a liquid Gallium alloy.

This paper presents the development of a numerical tool meant at modelling the effect of stationary fluctuations in nuclear cores for systems cooled with either liquid water or boiling water. The originating fluctuations are defined for the variables describing the boundary conditions of the system, i.e. inlet velocity, inlet enthalpy, and outlet pressure. The tool then determines in the frequency domain the three-dimensional distributions within the core of the corresponding fluctuations in neutron flux, coolant density, coolant velocity, coolant enthalpy, and fuel temperature. The tool is thus based on the simultaneous modelling of neutron transport, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer in a truly integrated and fully coupled manner. The modelling of neutron transport relies on the two-group diffusion approximation and a spatial discretization based on finite differences. The modelling of fluid dynamics is performed using the Homogeneous Equilibrium Model, with a void fraction correction based on a pre-computed distribution of the static slip ratio (when two-phase flow conditions are encountered). Heat conduction in the fuel pins is also accounted for, and the heat transfer between the fuel pins and the coolant is modelled also using a pre-computed distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. The spatial discretization of the fluid dynamic and heat transfer problems is carried out using finite volumes. The tool, currently entirely Matlab based, requires minimal input data, mostly in form of the three-dimensional distributions of the macroscopic cross-sections and their relative dependence on coolant density and fuel temperature, the point-kinetic parameters of the core, as well as the three-dimensional distribution of the slip ratio (in case of two-phase flow conditions) and of the heat transfer coefficient. Melt fragmentation, quenching and long term coolability in a deep pool of water under reactor vessel are employed as a severe accident mitigation strategy in several designs of light water reactors. Success of the strategy is contingent upon effectiveness of natural circulation in removing the decay heat generated by the porous debris bed. Geometrical configuration of the bed is one of the factors which affect coolability of the bed. Boiling and two-phase turbulent flows in the pool serve as a source of mechanical energy which can affect the initial geometry as well as dynamically change the shape of already formed debris bed. The main goal of this work is to provide experimental data on spreading of solid particles in the pool by large scale two-phase flow structures induced by gas injection from the bottom. These data are necessary for development and validation of predictive capabilities of computer codes allowing numerical modeling of the debris bed formation at prototypic severe accident conditions. In PDS-P experiments air injection at the bottom of the test section is employed in order to create large scale flow in the pool. The test section is constructed as a rectangular tank. It has close to 2D geometry with fixed width (72 mm), variable length (up to 1.6 m) and allows water filling depth of up to 1 m. The variable pool length and depth allows formation of the different in size and pattern two-phase circulating flows. Experimental conditions such as gas-phase flow rate and particle properties (density and size) are scaled to maintain relevancy to the prototypic accident conditions. The Westinghouse FRIGG facility, in Västerås/Sweden, is dedicated to the measurement of critical power,stability and pressure drop in fuel rod bundles under BWR operating conditions (steady-state andtransient). Capability to measure cross-sectional void and radial void distributions during steady-stateoperation was already considered when the facility was built in the late 1960s, using gamma transmissionmeasurements. In the 1990s, redesigned equipment was installed to allow for full 2D tomography andsome test campaigns were successfully run where the void was measured in the Westinghouse SVEA-96fuel bundle geometry with and without part-length rods. In this paper, the tomographic raw data from the SVEA-96 void measurement campaigns are revisitedusing various tomographic reconstruction techniques. This includes an algebraic method and a filteredback-projection method. Challenges, for example due to artifacts created by high difference in gammaabsorption, or to accurately identify the location of the bundle structure, are resolved. The resultingdetailed void distributions are then averaged over entire sub-channels or within the steam core only, forcomparison against sub-channel simulations. The resulting void distributions are compared against sub-channel void predictions using the VIPREW/MEFISTO code. The region downstream the part-length rods are of particular interest to investigatehow the void in the steam core is redistributed within the open region of the bundle. The comparisonshows a reasonable agreement between the measurements and the predictions.

This dissertation focused on development and utilization of numerical and experimental approaches to improve the CFD modeling of fluidization flow of cohesive micron size particles. The specific objectives of this research were: (1) Developing a cluster prediction mechanism applicable to Two-Fluid Modeling (TFM) of gas-solid systems (2) Developing more accurate drag models for Two-Fluid Modeling (TFM) of gas-solid fluidization flow with the presence of cohesive interparticle forces (3) using the developed model to explore the improvement of accuracy of TFM in simulation of fluidization flow of cohesive powders (4) Understanding the causes and influential factor which led to improvements and quantification of improvements (5) Gathering data from a fast fluidization flow and use these data for benchmark validations. Simulation results with two developed cluster-aware drag models showed that cluster prediction could effectively influence the results in both the first and second cluster-aware models. It was proven that improvement of accuracy of TFM modeling using three versions of the first hybrid model was significant and the best improvements were obtained by using the smallest values of the switch parameter which led to capturing the smallest chances of cluster prediction. In the case of the second hybrid model, dependence of critical model parameter on only Reynolds number led to the fact that improvement of accuracy was significant only in dense section of the fluidized bed. This finding may suggest that a more sophisticated particle resolved DNS model, which can span wide range of solid volume fraction, can be used in the formulation of the cluster-aware drag model. The results of experiment suing high speed imaging indicated the presence of particle clusters in the fluidization flow of FCC inside the riser of FIU-CFB facility. In addition, pressure data was successfully captured along the fluidization column of the facility and used as benchmark validation data

A two-phase flow often exhibits a complicated three-dimensional structure by nature even in a simple vertical pipe. In order to model such a complicated flow structure and to validate multiphase flow CFD, experimental database for three dimensional velocity and void fraction distributions are crucial. The paper addresses an algorithm to measure three-dimensional velocity of individual bubble with a bubble paring scheme. The bubble paring scheme finds a pair of bubble in two sets of wire-mesh sensor data to determine the direction and magnitude of velocity vector for each bubble. The devised scheme was applied to the vertical upward air-water flow (jG=0.64m/s, jL=0.64m/s) in a large diameter pipe (i.d. 224mm). The bubble pairing scheme visualized the developing process of two-phase flow: large bubbles coalesced with each other to move toward the center, while the rest of bubbles broke up into smaller bubbles and decelerated.

Fluid flowing through pipelines often encounters fittings such as elbows. Although it is true that two-phase flow patterns observed in elbows are qualitatively the same as those seen in straight pipes, the presence of a pipe elbow can modify relative positions and local velocities of the two phases as they are subjected to forces in addition to those encountered in a straight pipe. That redistribution can affect pressure drop values, chemical inhibitor concentration and distribution to the top of the pipe, as well as the erosion pattern occurring from solid particles such as sand that is entrained in oil and gas transportation pipelines. In this work, a Wire-Mesh Sensor technique based on conductance measurements of void fraction was applied to investigate two-phase pipe flow through a standard elbow. The horizontal flow test section, consisting of a 76 mm ID, 18 m long pipe, was employed to generate stratified-wavy and annular flow conditions. Two 16×16 Wire-Mesh configuration sensors were positioned either 0.9 m upstream or 0.6 m downstream of the bend. The experiments were conducted at different liquid and gas superficial velocities that ranged from 0.03 m/s to 0.2 m/s and from 9 m/s to 34 m/s, respectively. The effects of liquid viscosity on the measured parameters are also investigated using two different viscosities of 1 and 10 cP. Stratified-slug transition, stratified wavy and annular flow patterns were observed visually in the clear section placed upstream of the Wire-Mesh sensors. Fluidized beds have widespread industrial applications ranging from chemical industries to power plants. The flow inside a fluidized bed system consists of two main phases, a particle phase and the fluid phase. The two phases are strongly coupled to each other through various forces like drag and pressure. Capturing this multiphase phenomenon requires modeling strategies that possess good fidelity over a range of scales. Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides a good platform to analyze the complex coupled multiphase hydrodynamics inside fluidized bed systems. Conventional DEM-CFD framework suffers from contradictory spatial resolution requirements for the particle and fluid phases, respectively. This prevents the conventional DEM-CFD method to be applied to geometries that have features comparable to the particle diameter of the solid phase. The novelty of this work lies in the development and validation of a two-grid formulation that removes the resolution restrictions of the conventional DEM-CFD framework. The results obtained from this new framework agree reasonably well with the experiments showing the capability of the new scheme to simulate conditions not possible with conventional DEM-CFD framework. In addition, this research also focuses on performing both 2D and 3D jetting fluidized bed simulations having millions of particles; validate/compare results with experiments and to perform heat transfer studies in a jetting fluidized bed system. The results suggest convective and diffusive mixing for a single jet at higher superficial velocity to be better than the mixing obtained in a multiple jet framework. The comparison with experimental results obtained in a multiple jetting setup shows that a 2D simulation captures the essential jet characteristics near the distributor plate reasonably well while a 3D simulation is needed to capture proper bubble dynamics near the freeboard of the bed. The flow is modeled by the Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using software ANSYS-CFX5. Unsteady simulations are conducted in a 180-degree sector with periodic boundary conditions. Air is injected into the rotor at the rate of 2.63 m3/min, and a uniform bubble diameter is specified. The effects of bubble diameter on velocity field and air volume fraction are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mm. Air volume fraction contours, velocity profiles, and turbulent kinetic energy profiles in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed. Results have been compared to experimental data, and good agreement is obtained for the mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy profiles in the rotor-stator gap and in the jet region outside stator blades.

A new model for simulation of bubbly two-phase flows has been developed and implemented into an open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code OpenFOAM. The model employs the two-fluid framework with closure relationships for the interfacial momentum transfer. The bubble size is calculated based on the solution of the transport equation of the interfacial area concentration. The predictions are validated against selected data obtained in the DEDALE experiment and containing the measured void fraction, the phasic velocities and the interfacial area concentration. In general, good agreement between calculated and measured data is demonstrated; however, the relative phasic velocity is systematically over-predicted. Wave energy dissipation due to bubble penetration and inferred turbulent penetration from breaking waves in the surf zone is related to the total energy of dissipation. Bubble injection is inferred from void fraction measurements obtained using a 2.3 meter vertical array of eight conductivity sensors extending from the bottom through the water surface. Potential energy and dissipation associated with bubble injection are calculated and compared with total wave dissipation. Total wave dissipation is calculated from the energy flux balance measured using an array of seven pressure sensors in the surf zone. Percent of total wave potential energy of the bubbles due to spilling breakers is on the order of 0.18% to 0.62%, consistent with past measurements in the surf zone. Percent of the bubble potential energy dissipation rates to total wave dissipation in the cross shore direction is on the order of 8% to 20%. The potential energy dissipation is largest immediately after injection, decaying exponentially after that. Bubble potential energy dissipation results within 1.2 seconds even for void fraction events greater than 36% and usually in less than 1.0 seconds.
