In this study a greenhouse has been designed for optimal production in the coastal area close to Algiers. Data showed that there are two main options for optimal production of tomatoes and similar products like cucumber. A choice can be made for winter production in a heated greenhouse or summer production with air-conditioning and CO2 injection. The estimated production is fairly similar for both seasons but the costs for summer production are 30% higher. The investment costs for the summer production scenario are higher but running costs are lower, since in summer less additional water and energy are needed for the production. To reduce the use of water and related costs we recommend to grow on substrate, re-circulate the water and collect the rainwater in a water basin. The growth of salad or strawberries might be an alternative for cultivation in early winter or early spring in greenhouses without heating., In deze studie is een optimale kas ontworpen voor gebruik in de kustvlakte rond Algiers. De resultaten gaven aan dat er twee opties zijn voor een optimale productie van een voorbeeld gewas als tomaat. Er is een mogelijkheid om in de winter te telen in een verwarmde kas of in de zomer met behulp van air conditioning in combinatie met CO2 toediening. De opbrengsten van beide systemen zijn vergelijkbaar maar de kosten voor de winterteelt zijn ruim 30% lager. De investeringskosten voor het zomersysteem zijn hoger maar het zomersysteem leidt wel tot een lager (aanvullend) watergebruik en lagere energiekosten. Om water en kosten te besparen wordt geadviseerd om gebruik te maken van substraat, recirculatie van water en de opvang van regenwater in een water bassin. Alternatieve gewassen als sla en aardbei kunnen een optie zijn voor de vroege winter en vroeg voorjaar indien gekozen wordt voor een teelt zonder verwarming

In this report, we present an analysis of the consequences of the European authorization policy for plant protection products within the context of the implementation of the Farm to Fork Strategy for Dutch greenhouse horticulture. We analyse European and Dutch crop protection policy and explore the consequences of the expected decrease in the number of approved plant protection products for five crops: tomato, cucumber, gerbera, chrysanthemum and Phalaenopsis. Based on these cases, we make an analysis for the entire greenhouse horticulture sector. Afterwards, we provide an overview of current and future developments in sustainable crop protection methods. Finally, we present conditions that can be imposed on the government, suppliers, buyers, researchers and advisers, and the greenhouse horticulture sector itself, which contribute to a setting in which greenhouse growers are able to continue to make crop protection more sustainable in an economically responsible manner., In dit rapport presenteren we een analyse van de gevolgen van het Europese toelatingsbeleid van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen binnen de context van de implementatie van de Farm to Fork Strategie voor de Nederlandse Glastuinbouw. We analyseren het Europese en Nederlandse Gewasbeschermingsmiddelenbeleid, en verkennen de gevolgen van de verwachte afname in het aantal goedgekeurde gewasbeschermingsmiddelen voor vijf gewassen: tomaat, komkommer, gerbera, chrysant en Phalaenopsis. Op basis van deze cases maken we een analyse voor de gehele glastuinbouw. Vervolgens geven we een overzicht van de huidige en toekomstige ontwikkelingen in duurzame gewasbeschermingsmethoden. Ten slotte presenteren we voorwaarden die aan overheid, toeleveranciers, afnemers, onderzoekers en adviseurs, en de glastuinbouw zelf gesteld kunnen worden, die bijdragen aan een setting waarin glastuinders in staat zijn om de gewasbescherming te blijven verduurzamen op een bedrijfseconomisch verantwoorde wijze.

Dit rapport levert een inventarisatie van groeimedia, gericht op mogelijkheden voor het aanpassen van de weerbaarheid, en een context en maatregelen waarmee telers de weerbaarheid van alternatieve groeimedia (niet bodem) kunnen verhogen. Het geeft richting aan de acties door partijen van het Uitvoeringsprogramma Toekomstvisie Gewasbescherming om potentieel kansrijke groeimedia en maatregelen structureel te adresseren in praktijk en onderzoek. Het betreft specifiek die groeimedia en maatregelen met potentie voor de Nederlandse teeltsituatie. De aanleiding vormt een actie van het Uitvoeringsprogramma Toekomstvisie Gewasbescherming(UP GB) en past onder het MMIP A2. Groeimedia dragen bij aan een weerbaar, actief en divers microbioom,mits afgestemd op bijdragen van de plant, organische meststoffen en organische toevoegingen. Temperatuur, watergehalte, zuurgraad en zuurstofaanvoer moeten daarop geoptimaliseerd zijn. Sommige bestanddelen van groeimedia-mengsels hebben in lage hoeveelheden een nuttige, maar in hoge hoeveelheden een schadelijke invloed.---This report delivers an inventory of growing media, aimed at possibilities to adapt their resilience, and a context and measures for growers to increase the resilience of alternative growing media (not soil). It gives direction to the actions by parties of the Implementation Program for the Future Vision for Crop Protection (UP) to structurally address potentially promising growing media as well as promising measures in practice and research. It specifically concerns growing media and measures with potential for the Dutch cultivation situation. The reason is an action of the Implementation Program for the Future Vision for Crop Protection (UP GB) and is part of MMIP A2. Growing media contribute to a resilient, active and diverse microbiome, provided they are tuned to contributions from the plant, organic fertilizers and organic additives. Biostimulants are increasingly used in agriculture and horticulture as methods are sought to limit the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. These products may contain microbial or non-microbial substances as well as combinations thereof. Biostimulants are defined as products that stimulate the plant nutrient supply, independent of the nutrient content of the product, with the sole purpose of increasing plant nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, the availability of nutrients retained in the soil or in the rhizosphere and improving overall quality characteristics of the plant increasing. This report describes the different types of microbial and non-microbial biostimulants and discusses the knowledge that is available regarding their modes of action. The mechanisms behind the effects of these products differ, but there is also substantial overlap. Many products have an effect on the resistance and resilience to both abiotic and biotic stress by means of effects on plant hormones and plant physiology or through effects on soil resistance and resilience (e.g., the microbiome). Despite the enormous amount of knowledge that has been gathered about biostimulants in recent years, many open questions and obstacles remain in their application. The main obstacles in practical use are uncertainty about the exact composition of products and the conditions (e.g. abiotic conditions, crop, growth phase) under which the products are most effective., Biostimulanten worden steeds vaker gebruikt in de land- en tuinbouw, omdat gezocht wordt naar methoden om gebruik van kunstmatige meststoffen en pesticiden te beperken. Tevens zien we dat veel producten een effect hebben op zowel de weerbaarheid tegen abiotische als biotische stress d.m.v. effecten op planthormonen en inhoudsstoffen van de plant of door effecten op de bodemweerbaarheid (microbioom). Ondanks de enorme hoeveelheid kennis, die de afgelopen jaren is verzameld over biostimulanten, blijven er nog veel openstaande vragen en obstakels bij de toepasing. De belangrijkste obstakels voor de praktijk zijn onduidelijkheid over de exacte samenstelling van producten, en over de omstandigheden (bv. abiotische condities, gewas, groeifase) waaronder de producten werkzaam zijn.

Prevention is an important pillar in the control of diseases and pests in the greenhouse. This report gives an overview of the different routes of entry for pests and diseases, the importance of these routes, and methods and possibilities for prevention. The (semi-)closed greenhouse and a clean corridor for material and people could offer options to reduce risks of entry. Surveys and workshops with growers indicated that they questioned the importance of diseases and pests entering the greenhouse through ventilation windows, but that they saw perspective in a clean corridor. Therefore, the study paid specific attention to these topics. The importance of entry of winged insects by the ventilation openings was monitored but this limited trial did not reveal a strong relationship between the amount of insects outside and inside the greenhouse. A design has been made for a clean corridor, with detection and treatment options. In addition, the possibility of removing insects with an air shower and a detection method for mildew spores were specifically examined. The air shower does not seem to offer an effective and safe solution for horticulture at this time. The mildew spore pressure could be quantified with the selected approach. These are just two examples of an elimination and a detection tool that can be part of a clean corridor; it is recommended to investigate various other techniques as well., Preventie is een belangrijke pijler in het beheersen van ziekten en plagen in de kas. Dit rapport geeft een overzicht van de verschillende invalsroutes, het belang van deze routes en methoden en mogelijkheden om introductie van ziekten en plagen in de kas te voorkomen. De (semi-) gesloten kas en een clean corridor om te voorkomen dat ziekten en plagen via materiaal en mensen worden geïntroduceerd zou opties kunnen bieden om risico’s te verkleinen. Enquetes en workshops met telers gaven aan dat zij vraagtekens hadden bij het belang van invlieg van ziekten en plagen via dakramen, maar dat zij wel perspectief zagen in een clean corridor. In het onderzoek is daarom specifiek aandacht besteed aan deze aspecten. Uit een beperkte monitoring van de invlieg van insecten via luchtramen, kwam geen sterke relatie naar voren tussen de hoeveelheid insecten buiten en in de kas. Er is een ontwerp gemaakt voor een clean corridor met detectie- en behandelingsopties. Er is specifiek gekeken naar de mogelijkheid om insecten te verwijderen met een luchtdouche, en naar een detectiemethode voor meeldauwsporen. De luchtdouche lijkt om dit moment geen effectieve en veilige oplossing voor de tuinbouw te bieden. De (meeldauw) sporendruk blijkt goed te kwantificeren te zijn en lijkt perspectiefvol. Dit zijn slechts voorbeelden van een eliminatie- en een detectietool die deel kunnen uitmaken van een clean corridor; het verdient de aanbeveling om diverse andere technieken voor detectie en behandeling/eliminatie nader te onderzoeken.

Crops in soil-based and soilless greenhouse cultivation systems are susceptible to various soilborne diseases, such as foot and root rot and wilting, caused by pathogens as Fusarium and Pythium. The Grºeen Challenges project aims to reduce the use of chemical plant protection products and to develop new measures and strategies for disease and pest control through a system approach. This project investigated which measures can be taken to promote soil disease suppression and induced plant resistance against soilborne pathogens (Fusarium and Pythium) in different horticultural crops: vegetable crops (tomato and cucumber) and ornamental crop (lisianthus)., Zowel grondgebonden als substraatteelten onder glas zijn gevoelig voor de verschillende ondergrondse ziekten, zoals voet- en wortelrot en verwelking, veroorzaakt door o.a. Fusarium en Pythium. Het project Green Challenges heeft als doel om het gebruik van chemische gewasbeschermingsmiddelen te reduceren, en nieuwe beheersmaatregelen te ontwikkelen via een systeemaanpak. In dit project werd onderzocht met welke maatregelen kan de bodem- en plantweerbaarheid tegen ondergrondse ziekten (Fusarium en Pythium) bevorderd worden in grondgebonden (lisianthus) en substraatteelt (tomaat en komkommer).

The low pest tolerance, the harvest of the complete plants, the short cropping cycle and the low cultivation temperature in annual flowers form a challenge for biological pest control. The goal of the here described research was to design and test a systems approach of pest control in annual flowers on the basis of functional biodiversity. As a first step, an overview has been made of the most important pest and natural enemy species, and the potential chances and challenges for a systems approach of pest control in annual flowers. The first experiments showed that alternating rows of aphid-sensitive and aphid-resistant annual flower species could slow down the spread of aphids. In a second experiment, the strategy around the population build-up of the predatory bug Macrolophus pygmaeus in successive cropping cycles was central. To build up a population of M. pygmaeus, it is important to already start during wintertime. Pelargonium sp. form, with the right choice of species and cultivar, a good host crop for the early establishment of a M. pygmaeus population. To be able to use this population effectively in spots where these predatory bugs are needed, as ‘transport’ system is required to move the predatory bugs around. This ‘transport’ system still needs to be further developed., De lage plaagtolerantie, het totaaloogst systeem, de korte teeltduur en de koele teeltomstandigheden in eenjarige zomerbloeiers zijn een uitdaging voor biologische bestrijding. Het doel van het hier beschreven onderzoek was het ontwerpen en testen van een systeemaanpak voor plaagbestrijding in eenjarige zomerbloeiers op basis van functionele biodiversiteit. Als eerste stap is er een overzicht gemaakt van de belangrijkste soorten plagen en bestrijders en de potentiele kansen en knelpunten voor een systeemaanpak voor plaagbestrijding in eenjarige zomerbloeiers. Uit het onderzoek bleek dat het afwisselen van rijen met bladluis-gevoelige en bladluis-resistente eenjarige zomerbloeiers de verspreiding van bladluis kon remmen. In een tweede experiment stond een strategie rondom de populatie-opbouw van de roofwants Macrolophus pygmaeus in opeenvolgende teelten van eenjarige zomerbloeiers binnen een bedrijf centraal. Om een populatie M. pygmaeus op het bedrijf op te bouwen moet al in de winterperiode worden begonnen. Pelargonium vormt, met de juiste keuze voor soort en cultivar, een goede waardplant voor een vroege opbouw van een M. pygmaeus populatie. Om deze populatie effectief in te kunnen zetten op de plekken waar ze nodig is, is er een ‘transport’ systeem nodig om deze roofwantsen te verplaatsen. Dit ‘transport’systeem moet nog verder worden ontwikkeld.

Changing from low- to mid- and high-tech greenhouses and from soil to soilless cultivation require adapted cultivation measures for tomato and sweet pepper. Major differences are the automated regulation of ventilation (opening of windows), radiation (using screens or whitewash), fertigation and irrigation, a high wire plant training system and plant propagation in substrate. All topics are extensively described. A checklist for the grower facing all these new and unknown phenomena is added to minimize the chance on mistakes., De verandering van low- naar mid- and high-tech kassen en van grond- naar substraatteelt brengt voor iedere tomaten en paprika tuinder veel nieuwe aspecten. Al die veranderingen (geautomatiseerde ventilatie, gebruik van schermen, bemestingsapparatuur, gewasgeleiding) en symptomen (gebrek- en overmaat verschijnselen, nieuwe ziekten en plagen) worden in dit rapport uitgebreid beschreven. Afgesloten wordt met een checklist om regelmatig te raadplegen en om de kans op fouten te minimaliseren.

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are a worldwide problem in many crops. These nematodes are a particular problem in glasshouse-grown chrysanthemums. In order to combat root-knot nematodes in the glasshouse, the soil is typically steamed every 5-6 growth cycles. However, this method is expensive, environmentally unfriendly and reduces the resistance and resilience of the soil against other pathogens and pests. In this experiment we added different biological pesticides and basic substances and biostimulants both individually and in combination in order to determine if there is an interactive or additive effect against damage caused by root-knot nematodes in chrysanthemums. We found that the use of the biological pesticide derived from garlic extract and the basic substance chitosan HCl and biostimulants comprised of sea minerals and plant oils reduced the damage to chrysanthemum caused by root-knot nematodes. A number of the treatments caused a reduction in plant biomass (e.g., soldier fly waste products and their interaction with chitosan HCl and interactions between the chemical nematicide oxamyl and several of the biostimulants). However, this reduction was minimal., Wortelknobbelaaltjes (WKA; Meloidogyne spp.) zijn een wereldwijd probleem in de teelt van verschillende gewassen en veroorzaken problemen in de grondgebonden teelt van o.a. chrysanten in de kassen in Nederland. Om WKA te bestrijden wordt gewoonlijk de grond elke 5-6 teeltcycli gestoomd. Maar deze methode is duur, kost veel energie en verlaagd de weerbaarheid van de bodem tegen andere ziekten en plagen. In deze proef hebben we biologische middelen en biostimulanten afzonderlijk en in combinaties toegepast om te bepalen of er een interactie of een additief effect is tegen WKA en de schade die ze in de gewas chrysant veroorzaakt. Het gebruik van de biologische bestrijdingsmiddelen van knoflook extracten en de basisstof chitosan HCl en ook de biostimulanten: zeemineralen en plantenolie hebben mogelijk positieve effecten tegen WKA. Een aantal van de behandelingen veroorzaakte een daling van het plantengewicht, b.v. de reststroom insectkweek (ook interacties tussen de reststroom insectkweek + de chitosan HCl), oxamyl, en ook oxamyl interacties met een paar van de biostimulanten interactie behandelingen, maar deze daling was gering.

In large parts of the Netherlands surface water quality does not meet the chemical and ecological standards as indicated by the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). The largest exceedances were found in areas with greenhouse horticulture, flower bulbs, fruit trees and ornamental trees. Several regulations have been implemented to improve water quality in greenhouse areas, leading finally to a target for zero emission of nutrients by 2027 in soilless cultivation and rules to minimise losses in soil bound cultivation. In addition to that an obligation exists to remove plant protection products (PPPs) from drain water by 2018 onwards. For soilless cultivation a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system gives the best options to reach these goals. For soil-bound cultivation the situation is more complicated and a combination of tools and measurements to help the farmer to tune irrigation to crop demand is most promising. These approaches will lead to a substantial decrease in losses of nutrients and PPPs to surface water. However, it is uncertain whether this will lead to the desired reduction in emissions and the water quality standards of the WFD in 2027. Obstacles might be problems with soil-bound cultivation, leakages in soilless cultivation and sodium limitations in certain crops.

The goal of the research described in the report was designing and testing a systems approach for pest control in chrysanthemum on the basis of functional biodiversity. The low pest tolerance, harvest of the complete plants and the short cropping cycle of chrysanthemum form a challenge for biological pest control. They imply respectively that there are naturally no or only little food sources in the crop for natural enemies, that natural enemies are eliminated with the crop at harvest, and that there is only a short time period for the establishment of a so-called ‘standing army’ of natural enemies. As a first step, an overview was made of the most important pests and natural enemies, and the potential chances and bottlenecks for a systems approach of pest control in chrysanthemum. Subsequent research was focused around a strategy based on a biological start with generalist predatory bugs (Orius sp.) and predatory mites (Transeius montdorensis) combined with several additional food sources and the elicitation of induced crop defenses through enrichment of the microbiome of the soil. In a series of greenhouse experiments the effect of this strategy on the control of Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and the cotton aphid (Aphis gossyppi) was investigated. The inoculation of rooted chrysanthemum cuttings with a relatively high density Orius laevigatus predatory bugs, and full-field application of high-quality Artemia (Biobee Biological Systems) as an additional food source, resulted in a good establishment of Orius in the crop and a good control of Western flower thrips and cotton aphids. No effects of the tested soil microbiome enrichment treatments on thrips and aphids were observe, Het doel van het in dit rapport beschreven onderzoek was het ontwerpen en testen van een systeemaanpak voor plaagbestrijding in chrysant op basis van functionele biodiversiteit. De lage plaagtolerantie, het totaaloogst systeem en de korte teeltduur van chrysant zijn een uitdaging voor biologische bestrijding. Het onderzoek heeft zich vervolgens gericht rondom een strategie gebaseerd op een biologische start met generalistische roofwantsen (Orius sp) en roofmijten (Transeius montdorensis) in combinatie met verschillende bijvoer-methoden en het verhogen van de plantweerbaarheid door middel van het verrijken van het microbioom in de bodem. In een serie kasproeven is het effect van deze strategie op Californische trips (Frankliniella occidentalis) en katoenluis (Aphis gossyppi) onderzocht. Het inoculeren van bewortelde chrysantenstekken met een relatief hoge dichtheid Orius roofwantsen, en het volvelds bijvoeren van de roofwantsen met kwaliteits-Artemia van Biobee Biological Systems, resulteerde in een goede vestiging van Orius en een goede bestrijding van Californische trips en katoenluis. Wanneer de kwaliteits-Artemia alleen pleksgewijs werd toegediend, was de bestrijding van trips elders in het gewas onvoldoende. Er zijn geen effecten van de getoetste weerbaarheidsbehandelingen op trips en bladluis waargenomen.

Water use efficiency in agriculture is crucially important in (semi-arid) regions. Greenhouse technology helps by combining a similar water consumption at a much higher yield, a better livelihood and labour opportunities. In this project, a demo centre was designed to disseminate innovations directly to growers. Design was based on computer simulations using local climate data. Two improved, span shaped, greenhouses and two traditional tunnels have been constructed in the Bekaa Valley. Cultivation is both in soil and in substrate, thus showing four steps in innovation. Cultivation started in April 2018 with tomatoes, followed by cucumber in October. Due to the limited project and growing period only preliminary conclusions can be drawn. The improved greenhouses showed a 3° higher night temperatures in April due to passive heating, the climate in summer and autumn was similar to the traditional greenhouses. The tomato production in the improved tunnels was 40% higher, mainly due to improved pollination. The effects on water use efficiency could not be demonstrated yet due to technical problems., Efficiënt omgaan met water is in aride gebieden zeer belangrijk. Het toepassen van beschermde teelten helpt in de tuinbouw de productie te verhogen bij hetzelfde waterverbruik, terwijl mens en milieu er op vooruitgaan. In dit project is een Demo centrum ontwikkeld om nieuwe ontwikkelingen direct aan de telers te kunnen laten zien. Het ontwerp is gebaseerd op een computersimulatie van het lokale klimaat in de Bekaa vallei. Twee verbeterde en twee traditionele tunnels zijn vervolgens gebouwd. In elk van de twee typen is één tunnel voor de teelt in grond en de ander voor de teelt in substraat. De eerste teelt startte in April 2018 met tomaat en werd gevolgd door een komkommerteelt in oktober. Door de korte teeltduur kunnen alleen voorlopige conclusies worden gegeven. Het toepassen van passieve verwarming leidde in april tot 3° C hogere nachttemperaturen, verder was het klimaat in beide typen tunnels vergelijkbaar. Toch was de oogst in de verbeterde tunnels 40% hoger omdat de bestuiving met hommels de vruchtzetting en uitgroei enorm verbeterde. Het waterverbruik kon nog niet optimaal worden gedemonstreerd vanwege technische problemen.

Peat is used as rooting medium in greenhouse horticulture. Biochar is a sustainable alternative for the use of peat, which will reduce peat derived carbon dioxide emissions. Biochar in potting soil mixtures allegedly increases water storage, nutrient supply, microbial life and disease suppression but this depends on feedstock and the production process. The aim of this paper is to find combinations of feedstock and production circumstances which will deliver biochars with value for the horticultural end user. Low-temperature (600 °C-750 °C) gasification was used for combined energy and biochar generation. Biochars produced were screened in laboratory tests and selected biochars were used in plant experiments. Tests included dry bulk density, total pore space, specific surface area, phytotoxicity, pH, EC, moisture characteristics and microbial stability. We conclude that biochars from nutrient-rich feedstocks are too saline and too alkaline to be applied in horticultural rooting media. Biochars from less nutrient-rich feedstocks can be conveniently neutralized by mixing with acid peat. The influence of production parameters on specific surface area, pH, total pore space and toxicity is discussed. Biochar mildly improved the survival of beneficial micro-organisms in a mix with peat. Overall, wood biochar can replace at least 20% v/v of peat in potting soils without affecting plant growth.
