These experiments have been performed by using the following salts: lithium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and cesium chloride. Different homogeneous Nafion membranes, NF111, NF112, NF115 and NF117, have been used in this work, with the aim of studying the membrane thickness influence. It has been observed that the membrane water uptake increases with the membrane thickness and decreases with the size of the cation. The integral permeability coefficient has been determined from the time evolution of the salt concentration in the dilute solution. The results show that the integral permeability coefficient decreases with the membrane thickness. In general, the influence of the type of electrolyte on the integral permeability coefficient is not significant for the membranes with larger thickness (that is, NF115 and NF117). Average apparent cation transport number has been determined for the same salt solutions, and from that membrane apparent permselectivity has been estimated. In general, in membranes with large thickness, the average apparent cation transport number increases with the cation size. Finally, from fluxes and membrane potentials membrane negative ionic permeabilities have been determined finding also that they decrease with membrane thickness. Molecular Dynamics simulations of the BAB type triblock copolymer lithium poly[(4-styrenesulfonyl) (trifluoromethylenesulfonyl) imide)]-block-poly(ethylene oxide)-block-lithium poly[(4-stryrenesylfonyl) (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide] (P(STFSILi)-b-PEO-b-P(STFSILi)) were carried out for different simulation temperatures and B-block lengths. By covalently binding the anion to the polymer backbone, it is immobilised and the cation transference number thereby raised significantly. It was found that the Li-ion diffusion decreases exponentially with growth of the B-block length. The poly(ethylene oxide) matrix dissolves Li-ions already during the equilibration stage of the simulation, and no Li-ion diffusion pathways were identified along the STFSI branches, which significantly influence the transport properties of the material.

Synthesis of fluoro-substituted substances based on brownmillerite Ba 2In2O5 is carried out. Substitution of Ca by La in initial cubic double perovskite Ba 4(Ca2Nb2)O11[VO]1 allowed obtaining phases with a similar structure with a lower content of structural oxygen vacancies, Ba4(La x Ca2-x Nb 2)O11 + 0.5x [VO]1-0.5x (x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2). The impedance technique was used to measure the temperature dependences of conductivity in the atmosphere of dry and humid air. Transport numbers determined using the EMF method in an oxygen-air and water steam concentration cells point to the predominantly hole nature of conductivity in the high-temperature region (T > 600 C) and to predominance of proton conductivity in the low-temperature region. Activation energies of hole and proton conductivity were calculated. Thermogravimetric measurements were carried out under heating from 25 to 1000 C with simultaneous mass-spectrometric determination of evolved H2O and CO2. The properties of the studied Ba4(La x Ca2-x Nb 2)O11 + 0.5x (x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) phases were compared with the earlier studied Ba4-x La x (Ca2Nb 2)O11 + 0.5x phases with similar lanthanum content. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Lithium‐ion batteries are particularly suitable as energy storage solutions in high power applications, such as hybrid electric vehicles. It is generally considered that one of the processes that limit the power density for lithium‐ion batteries is the mass transport in the electrolyte. Yet, it is still difficult to find a set of properties that fully describe the mass transport for the most common electrolytes. In this work, characterization studies of the mass transport were undertaken for two technically important lithium‐ion battery electrolytes: (1) a liquid electrolyte which consist of LiPF6 dissolved in ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and ethylene carbonate (EC) and, (2) a gel electrolyte which consists of LiPF6 dissolved in ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate (PC) and poly(vinylidenefluoride‐hexafluoropropylene) (P(VdFHFP)).The mass transport in the electrolytes was characterized by combining several experiments. The Maxwell‐Stefan equation was used as basis for the characterization. Models of the transport were formulated from the equation and the apparent transport properties were identified. The characterization methods were first analyzed mathematically in order to establish at which conditions the characterization experiments should be performed. The values of the apparent transport properties were then obtained by optimizing the models to the experimental responses. In order to give the characterization results a comprehensible interpretation and to allow benchmarking of electrolytes, the concept of a normalized potential gradient was introduced.The characterization results of the liquid electrolyte were used in a full cell model of a LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 | LiPF6 EC:EMC (3:7) | MAG‐10 cell. The model was developed to analyze the mass transport during a hybrid pulse power characterization (HPPC) test. The transport properties of a cation-exchange membrane in the presence of nickel sulphate solutions were investigated by means of chronopotentiometry. The interest of this study relies on the application to the treatment of chromium plating rinse baths. The presence of chromic acid in the solutions and the initial concentration of nickel sulphate affect significantly the shape of the chronopotentiograms. The different shape of chronopotentiograms as well as the values of different parameters is thereby justified by the calculation of the speciation diagrams of Ni(II).Parameters like the limiting current density, resistance of the ohmic region, plateau length, and nickel transport numbers through the cation-exchange membrane were calculated from the chronopotentiometric and the current-voltage curves. The obtained results show an important competence between Ni2+ and H+ ions, with increases of the nickel transport numbers when the [Ni2+]/[H+] ratio corresponding to the initial equilibrium exceeds the unity. The increase in the Ni2+ concentration brings about a facilitated arising of electroconvection, which promotes overlimiting currents and additional mixing at the membrane surface. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
