Present‐day convergence between Caribbean and North American plates is accommodated by subduction zones, major active thrusts and strike‐slip faults, which are probably the source of the historical large earthquakes on Hispaniola. However, little is known of their geometric and kinematic characteristics, slip rates and seismic activity over time. This information is important to understand the active tectonics in Hispaniola, but it is also crucial to estimate the seismic hazard in the region. Here we show that a relatively constant NE‐directed shortening controlled the geometry and kinematics of main active faults in southern central Hispaniola, as well as the evolution of the Quaternary stress regime. This evolution included a pre‐Early Pleistocene D1 event of NE‐trending compression, which gave rise to the large‐scale fold and thrust structure in the Cordillera Central, Peralta Belt, Sierra Martín García and San Juan‐Azua basin. This was followed by a near pure strike‐slip D2 stress regime, partitioned into the N‐S to NE‐SW transverse Ocoa‐Bonao‐La Guácara and Beata Ridge fault zones, as well as subordinate structures in related sub‐parallel deformation corridors. Shift to D2 strike‐slip deformation was related to indentation of the Beata Ridge in southern Hispaniola from the Early to Middle Pleistocene and continues today. D2 was locally coeval by a more heterogeneous and geographically localized D3 extensional deformation. Defined seismotectonic fault zones divide the region into a set of simplified seismogenic zones as starting point for a seismic hazard modeling. Highest peak ground acceleration values computed in the Ocoa Bay establish a very high seismic hazard.

This study provides a multi-disciplinary overview of the seismology and geodetic data with tectonics analysis in order to provide an evaluation of stress trajectories, and probabilistic fault rupture hazard assessment. Based on the different scenarios obtained from the comparison of several overviews and their interpretation, we investigated the kinematics and active tectonics of different structural zones. In this study, the magnitudes and directions of seismic and geodetic strain rates (SSR and GSR) were evaluated using reliable earthquake focal mechanisms and all available GPS data (1999–2015) in the structural subzones of northern Iran, where have experienced more than 14 strong instrumental earthquakes (Mw ≥ 6). In addition, a tectonic stress model was inferred from the Focal Mechanism Stress Inversion (FMSI). The new crustal stress map was proposed by the weighted average analysis of the SSR, GSR, and FMSI. N35.5° E and N104° E were estimated for the Alborz and Talesh mountains, respectively. The numerical analysis of stress regimes confirms the slip partitioning mechanism of oblique shortening on the sub-parallel thrusts and strike-slip faults in the area. Four main stress regime categories were defined, including thrust (49.37%), strike-slip (39.24%), thrust with a strike-slip component (2.53%), normal (1.27%), and unknown faulting (7.59%). Seismic and geodetic moment rates (SMR and GMR) and their comparison were also calculated in order to evaluate the function of these parameters in determining the seismicity arrangement. The ratio of the seismic/geodetic moment rates for the area is ~70.7%. This ratio for the Alborz, western Koppeh-Dagh, north part of Central Iran, South Caspian Basin, and Talesh is ~0.9, 0.3, 11.9, 0.3, and 57.3, respectively, which indicates the most elastic energy has been released in the Talesh and the north part of Central Iran. Toutefois, l’inexistence de forages d’exploration profonds, et plus généralement de donnés sur le sous-sol, à proximité des communautés visées induit de nombreuses incertitudes qui ont été abordées dans cette thèse. Les travaux entrepris dans la communauté de Kuujjuaq (Nunavik, Canada) ont permis de définir des lignes directrices et d’adapter les méthodes existantes qui peuvent maintenant être étendues à d’autres communautés éloignées faisant face à des défis similaires d’exploration géothermique. Le flux de chaleur a été déduit numériquement par résolution d’un problème inverse de conduction de chaleur en 1D. L’algorithme de Nelder-Mead a été utilisé pour minimiser la somme des moindres carrés et trouver le flux de chaleur optimal qui permet de reproduire un profil de température d’une profondeur de 80 m mesuré dans un puits d’observation hydrogéologique. Le flux de chaleur simulé s’est révélé sensible à l’histoire paléoclimatique et aux propriétés thermophysiques. Par conséquent, ces différentes sources d’incertitude affectent les prédictions de la température en profondeur et l’évaluation de l’énergie thermique en place. Des simulations de Monte Carlo ont révélé que la température du réservoir et le facteur de récupération sont les paramètres les plus influents qui affectent les ressources géothermiques et la production potentielle de chaleur et d’électricité. Les analyses de risque suggèrent que la production de chaleur géothermique à Kuujjuaq implique un risque moyen à faible, alors que la production d’électricité et la cogénération présentent un risque élevé à moyen. De plus, un modèle de contrainte a priori a été proposé pour Kuujjuaq considérant des corrélations empiriques, la modélisation analytique et des simulations de Monte Carlo, lesquelles ont été calibrées avec des données régionales. The reactivation of glacially induced faults is linked to the increase and decrease of ice mass. But, whether faults are reactivated by glacially induced stresses depends to a large degree on the crustal stress field, fault properties and fluid pressures. The background (tectonic and lithostatic) stress field has a major effect on the potential for reactivation, as the varying stresses induced by the ice sheet affects the state of stress around the fault, bringing the fault to more stable or more unstable conditions. Here, we describe the effect of glacially induced stresses on fault reactivation under three potential background stress regimes of normal, strike-slip and thrust/reverse faulting. The Mohr diagram is used to illustrate how glacially induced stresses affect the location and the size of the Mohr circle. We review these different cases by applying an analysis of the stress state at different time points in the glacial cycle. In addition, we present an overview of fault properties that affect the reactivation of glacially induced faults, such as pore-fluid pressure and coefficient of friction.

Clear understanding of coupled hydromechanical effects, such as ground deformation, induced microseismicity and fault reactivation, will be crucial to convince the public that geologic carbon storage is secure. These effects depend on hydromechanical properties, which are usually determined at metric scale. However, their value at the field scale may differ in orders of magnitude. To address this shortcoming, we propose a hydromechanical characterization test to estimate the hydromechanical properties of the aquifer and caprock at the field scale. We propose injecting water at high pressure and, possibly, low temperature while monitoring fluid pressure and rock deformation. Here, we analyze the problem and perform numerical simulations and a dimensional analysis of the hydromechanical equations to obtain curves for overpressure and vertical displacement as a function of the volumetric strain term. We find that these curves do not depend much on the Poisson ratio, except for the dimensionless vertical displacement at the top of the caprock, which does. We can then estimate the values of the Young's modulus and the Poisson ratio of the aquifer and the caprock by introducing field measurements in these plots. Hydraulic parameters can be determined from the interpretation of fluid pressure evolution in the aquifer. Reverse-water level fluctuations are observed, i.e. fluid pressure drops in the caprock as a result of the induced deformation that undergoes the aquifer-caprock system when injecting in the aquifer. We find that induced microseismicity is more likely to occur in the aquifer than in the caprock and depends little on their stiffness. Monitoring microseismicity is a useful tool to track the opening of fractures. The propagation pattern depends on the stress regime, i.e. normal, strike slip or reverse faulting. The onset of microseismicity in the caprock can be used to define the maximum sustainable injection pressure to ensure a permanent CO2 storage.
