Bei 54 Realschüler*innen im Alter zwischen 15 und 17 Jahren wurden Messungen instrumentell-aggressiven Verhaltens mittels fünf unterschiedlichen Erhebungsarten vorgenommen: Aggressionssimulator, Lehrerbeurteilung, Selbsteinschätzung, Persönlichkeitsfragebogen, projektives Verfahren. Zwischen den verschiedenen Indikatoren aggressiven Verhaltens ergaben sich Korrelationen bis unter 0.30. Die Ergebnisse werden zum einen unter Gesichtspunkten der Validierung von Messmethoden aggressiven Verhaltens, zum anderen im Hinblick auf die Bestimmung angemessener Situationen zur Überprüfung der Spezifität/Generalität instrumentell-aggressiven Verhaltens diskutiert.

Global traits have broad and possibly incorrect implications, which proves they are not circular, and the study of their development, processes and predictive utility is a worthy project for personality psychology.

In different fields of the behavioral sciences, a growing demand for brief measures of psychological constructs can be observed. The current research presents new evidence on the reliability and validity of a recently developed ultra-short measure of the optimism construct sensu Scheier and Carver (1985), the German version of the Scale Optimism-Pessimism-2 (SOP2) as well as first evidence on Spanish and Italian adaptations. Reliability estimates indicate good reliability. Correlations with criteria from the nomological net of the construct are as expected. Equivalence of SOP2 factors across language versions is supported. Due to its highly efficient, yet accurate and valid measurement of the construct, the SOP2 is strongly recommended for assessment settings with severe monetary/time constraints, for example, large-scale surveys. Due to the factor equivalence, the SOP2 is also a valuable measure for cross-cultural studies. (author's abstract)

Many test constructions show a lack of awareness concerning the comprehensibility of items, specifically in personality tests. However, this lack of awareness can have implications for psychometric quality. Frequently, it is simply assumed that respondents’ understanding of a test item matches the meaning implied by the test developer. It is, however, rarely ever tested whether all respondents of the targeted population actually understand the test items correctly and in a similar way. As pointed out in the last editorial (Ziegler, 2014), item content should be precisely tuned to the needs of every potential respondent in a population targeted by a newly developed test. More specifically, person variables such as age, gender, and education (Rammstedt & Kemper, 2011) have to be taken into account when constructing test items in order to assure that each potential respondent fully understands the meaning and may respond accordingly. If these person variables are neglected in the process of test construction, the psychometric quality of a test may be substantially affected by fuzzy concepts. The goal of this editorial is to raise awareness for the detrimental effects fuzzy concepts can have in test development and possible remedies. (author's abstract)

Psychological constructs are becoming increasingly important in social surveys. Scales for the assessment of these constructs are usually developed primarily for individual assessment and decision-making. Hence, in order to guarantee high levels of reliability, measurement precision, and validity, these scales are in most cases much too long to be applied in surveys. Such settings call for extremely short measures validated for the population as a whole. However, despite the unquestionable demand, appropriate measures are still lacking. There are several reasons for this. In particular, short scales have often been criticized for their potential psychometric shortcomings with regard to reliability and validity. In this article, the authors discuss the advantages of short scales as alternative measures in large-scale surveys. Possible reasons for the assumed limited psychometric qualities of short scales will be highlighted. The authors show that commonly used reliability estimators are not always appropriate for judging the quality of scales with a minimal number of items, and they offer recommendations for alternative estimation methods and suggestions for the construction of a thorough short scale. This study examined the effects of weather on personality self-ratings. Single-assessment data were derived from the German General Social Survey conducted in 2008. For a subset of the participants (N = 478), official weather station data for the day a personality inventory was completed could be determined. Among these respondents, 140 (29%) completed the personality inventory on an unambiguously sunny day, 59 (12%) completed the measure on an unambiguously rainy day, and 279 (59%) completed the questionnaire on a day characterized by mixed weather conditions. Results revealed that self-ratings for some personality domains differed depending on the weather conditions on the day the inventory was completed. When compared with corresponding self-ratings collected under mixed weather conditions, ratings for the Big Five dimension of Openness to Experience were significantly lower on rainy days and ratings for Conscientiousness were significantly lower on sunny days. These results are suggestive of some limitations on the assumed situational independence of trait ratings. (author's abstract)

"Der gegenwärtige ökonomische Abschwung in den USA und auf der ganzen Welt hat wieder die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Prozesse gelenkt, durch die Familien und Kinder durch ökonomische Härten belastet sind. Diese Studie betrachtet die Reaktionen auf ökonomische Härten in einer Stichprobe von Erwachsenen, die zum ersten Mal vor 20 Jahren befragt wurden, als sie noch Jugendliche waren. Insgesamt 271 der ursprünglichen G2 Jugendlichen (Durchschnittsalter M = 25.6 Jahre) nahmen an dieser Studie zusammen mit ihren kleinen Kindern (G3, Durchschnittsalter M = 2.31 Jahre zum ersten Erhebungszeitpunkt) und, in 81% der Fälle, zusammen mit dem anderen Elternteil des Kindes. Die Datenanalysen folgten einem interaktionistischen Modell und gingen davon aus, dass positive Persönlichkeitseigenschaften im Jugendalter der G2 weniger ökonomische Belastungen im Erwachsenenalter vorhersagen würden. Gleichzeitig wurde erwartet, dass diese positiven Persönlichkeitseigenschaften die negativen Familienprozesse aufhalten würden, die eine kompetente Entwicklung in G3 wahrscheinlich behindern. Die Befunde waren mit dem Selektionsaspekt im interaktionistischen Modell konsistent. Das Model sagte darüber hinaus vorher, dass ökonomischen Belastungen und andere familienbezogene Stressprozesse die Entwicklung von G3 über die frühere G2 Persönlichkeit beeinflussten. Der Sozialisationsaspekt im interaktionistischen Modell erhielt also auch Unterstützung. Die Befunde sprechen dafür, dass die Beziehung zwischen den ökonomischen Bedingungen und der Entwicklung von Kindern einen dynamischen Prozess aus Selektion und Sozialisation darstellt, der über Zeit und über Generationen zum Tragen kommt." (Autorenreferat), "The current economic downturn in the U.S. and around the world has refocused attention on the processes through which families and children are affected by economic hardship. This study examines the response to economic pressure of a cohort of youth first studied 20 years ago as adolescents and now grown to adulthood. A total of 271 of the original G2 adolescents (M age = 25.6 years) participated in the study with their young child (G3, M age = 2.31 years at the first time of assessment) and the child's other parent in 81% of the cases. Data analyses were guided by the interactionist model which proposed that positive G2 personality attributes during adolescence would predict lower economic pressure during adulthood and would diminish the negative family processes related to economic pressure expected to disrupt competent G3 development. The findings were consistent with this social selection aspect of the interactionist model. The model also predicted that economic pressure and other aspects of the related family stress process would affect G3 development net of earlier G2 personality. This social causation aspect of the interactionist model also received support. The findings suggest that the relationship between economic conditions and child development reflect a dynamic process of selection and causation that plays out over time and generations." Qualitative Forschung in den Sozialwissenschaften ist nicht ein neuer Trend, sondern ein realistischer (Wieder-) Einsatz von Methoden, mit denen die Passung zwischen der Qualität der erforschten Phänomene mit den von ihnen abgeleiteten Daten erreicht werden soll. Viele Methoden sind bereits für ein solches "intellektuelles Recycling" vorhanden; damit ist die De-Quantifizierung und Wiederverwendung der ursprünglichen Items mit neuen Funktionen möglich. In unserem Beitrag beschreiben wir den produktiven Gebrauch von klassischen, standardisierten Forschungsmethoden über Persönlichkeit durch deren systematische De- Quantifizierung. Das Resultat ist ein neuer Gebrauch originärer Items als bedeutungsbildende Auslöser in einer Studie zu Selbstbeobachtungsprozessen. Wir zeigen, wie der qualitative Gebrauch von ausgewählten NEO-PI-R Aussagen es ermöglicht, die spezifische Art zu ermitteln, in der Personen ihre Eigenschaften auffassen. Es wird dargestellt, wie individuell Bezüge zwischen den NEO-PI-R Aussagen und dem ganzheitlich wahrgenommenen Selbst hergestellt werden. Die Entwicklungstradition der Ganzheitspsychologie, d.h. der Gebrauch aktualgenetischer Techniken, wird kurz in ihrer Bedeutung für qualitative Forschungspraktiken zusammengefasst., Qualitative orientation in the social sciences is not a new trend, but a realistic restoration of method construction that fits the quality of the phenomena under study with the data it derives. Many existing methods are available for intellectual recycling—de-quantification and re-use of the original items in new functions. We outline a productive use of classical standardized methods of personality research through their systematic de-quantification. The result is a new use of its raw items as meaning-making triggers in the study of the qualitative process of self-reflection. We demonstrate how a qualitative use of selected NEO-PI-R items makes it possible to investigate the specific ways in which individuals conceptualize their specific characteristics, attempting to arrive at a closure about their fit with one's self as a whole. The processes of meaning-making involved in such closure are holistic in nature. The developmental traditions of Ganzheitspsychologie—the use of techniques of microgenesis (Aktualgenese)—are outlined as returning to the focus of interest of qualitative research practices., La orientación cualitativa no es una nueva tendencia en las ciencias sociales, pero sí una reinstalación realista del método de construcción que ajusta la cualidad del objeto de estudio con los datos que deriva. Hay muchos métodos existentes disponibles para el reciclaje intelectual – de cuantificación y reuso de los reactivos originales en nuevas funciones. Esbozamos un empleo productivo de los métodos estandarizados clásicos de la investigación de la personalidad a través de la de-cuantificación sistemática .El resultado es un nuevo uso de sus reactivos crudos como disparadores de la elaboración de significados en el estudio de los procesos cualitativos de autorreflexión. Demostramos cómo un uso cualitativo de determinados reactivos NEO-PI-R posibilita investigar las formas particulares en la que los individuos conceptualizan sus características específicas, en un intento por hacer un cierre del ajuste del sí mismo como totalidad. Los procesos de elaboración de significados en tal cierre son holísticos por naturaleza. Son delineadas las tradiciones del desarrollo de la Ganzheitspsychologie – el uso de técnicas de microgénesis (Aktualgenese) – como regreso al foco de interés de las prácticas cualitativas de investigación.

In sozialwissenschaftlichen und psychologischen Untersuchungen werden Personen oft nach der Häufigkeit eines Verhaltens befragt, in dem eine Liste geeigneter Alternativen oder Antwortkategorien vorgelegt wird. Frühere Untersuchungen gingen dabei davon aus, daß der Befragte Vergleichsinformation aus dem vorgegebenen Antwortspektrum extrahiert, wobei unterstellt wurde, daß der Durchschnittsbefragte durch die mittleren Werte der Skala repräsentiert wird und deren Extremwerte die Extrempunkte der Verteilung repräsentieren. Ausgehend von dieser Untersuchungsweise zeigen die derzeitigen Studien, daß ein Antwortreport ebenso benutzt werden kann, um die Reichweite der vorkommenden Antwortalternativen auf einer Referenzskala zu messen, und die Implikationen dieses Antwortreports ausgewertet werden können. Das erste Experiment zeigt, daß sich hierdurch verschiedene Merkmale herausbildeten, die Rückschlüsse auf die Persönlichkeit der Befragten zuließen; in einem zweiten Experiment konnten Rückschlüsse auf den Grad des medizinischen Zustands der Befragten gezogen werden. Beide Experimente gingen von demselben Antwortreport aus und unterschieden nur den jeweiligen Rang auf der Antwortskala. Erfahrene Mediziner ebenso wie Studenten im ersten Ausbildungsjahr schätzten eine solche Antwortskala als von bedeutender Relevanz und Verwertbarkeit. Die Anwendungsmöglichen der Verwendung von solchen Antwortalternativen werden in der psychologischen Forschung sowie in der Diagnostik diskutiert. (HNÜbers.), 'In social and psychological research, respondents are often asked to report the frequency of a behavior by checking the appropriate alternative from a list of response categories provided to them. Previous research indicated that respondents extract comparism information from the range of the response alternatives, assuming that the average respondent is represented by values in the middle range of the scale, and that the extremes of the scale represent the extremes of the distribution. Extending this line of research, the present studies demonstrate that the users of a respondent's report are also likely to use the range of the response alternatives as a frame of reference in evaluating the implications of the report. Specifically, subjects were found to draw different conclusions about the respondent's personality (Experiment 1), or the severity of his medical condition (Experiment 2), from the same absolute frequency report, depending upon the range of the response scale on which the frequency was checked. Moreover, experienced medical doctors were as likely to be influenced by scale range as first-year medical students, suggesting that the phenomenon is of considerable applied importance. Implications for the use of response alternatives in psychological research and diagnostic judgment are discussed.' (author's abstract)
