Volcanic rocks are considered reliable recorders of past changes in the Earth's magnetic field. Recent flows, however, sometimes fail to produce the known magnetic field at the time of cooling. Previous research on Mt. Etna suggests paleomagnetic data might not be accurately recorded. Here we test the accuracy of paleomagnetic data obtained from Mt. Etna lavas by comparing paleomagnetic data from historical flows to direct measurements of the magnetic field above the current topography. The inclinations and intensities in both data sets are biased toward lower values, while there is no such trend for the declination. Inclinations are on average 2.9° lower than expected; intensities are on average 8.8 µT lower. The deviations from the expected values depend on the height above the flow. Moreover, the inclinations and intensities vary as a function of topography. Both are higher above ridges and lower in gullies; the variations within a site are up to 14.1° in inclination and 12.9 µT for intensity. To suppress this paleomagnetic data bias it is important to take samples several meters apart and from different parts of the flow whenever possible. While this leads to a higher degree of scatter in paleodirections, the results better represent the Earth's magnetic field at the time of cooling. This emphasizes the importance of reporting paleomagnetic sampling strategies in detail.

Magnetic signals in igneous rocks arise from assemblages of iron-oxide bearing minerals that differ in for example, size, shape, and chemistry. Paleomagnetic measurements on bulk samples measure millions of such grains simultaneously, producing a statistical ensemble of the magnetic moments of the individual grains. Scanning magnetometry techniques such as the Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM) measure magnetic signals on micrometer scales, allowing the identification of magnetic moments of individual grains in a sample using for example, Micromagnetic Tomography (MMT). Here we produce a grain-size distribution of iron-oxides in a typical Hawaiian basalt from the superparamagnetic threshold (∼40 nm) to grains with a diameter of 10 µm. This grain-size distribution is obtained by combining FIB-SEM and MicroCT data from sister specimens, and normalizing them to the mineral surface area of non-magnetic minerals. Then we use this grain-size distribution to determine the contributions of individual magnetic carriers to bulk magnetic measurements and surface magnetometry. We found that measurements on bulk samples are sensitive to relatively small grain sizes in the realm of single domain or vortex states (<200 nm), while signals in surface magnetometry arise mainly from larger grains with diameters >1 µm. This implies that bulk measurements cannot be compared straightforwardly to signals from surface magnetometry from the same sample. Moreover, our observations explain why MMT results are insensitive to the presence of many small grains in a sample that intuitively should hamper their outcome.

The South China, Indochina, and Borneo margins surrounding the South China Sea contain long-lived arcs that became inactive at approximately 85 Ma, even though an embayment of oceanic crust (the ‘Proto-South China Sea’) remained in the intervening region. This oceanic crust eventually subducted in the Cenozoic below Borneo and the Cagayan arc, while the modern South China Sea opened in its wake. To investigate the enigmatic cessation of Mesozoic subduction below South China and Borneo, we studied a fragment of oceanic crust and overlying trench-fill sediments that accreted to NW Borneo during the final stages of Paleo-Pacific subduction. Based on radiolarian biostratigraphy of cherts overlying the pillow basalts and detrital zircon geochronology of the trench-fill, we constrained the minimum age of the oceanic crust during accretion to 40 Ma. This shows that subduction cessation was not related to ridge subduction. Geochemical analysis of pillow basalts revealed an enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt signature comparable to oceanic plateaus. Using paleomagnetism, we show that this fragment of oceanic crust was not part of the Izanagi Plate but was part of a plate (the ‘Pontus’ Plate) separated from the Izanagi Plate by a subduction zone. Based on the minimum 40 Ma age of the oceanic crust and its geochemistry, we suggest that Mesozoic subduction below South China and Borneo stopped when an oceanic plateau entered the trench, while the eastern plate margin with the Izanagi Plate remained active. We show how our findings offer opportunities to restore plate configurations of the Panthalassa-Tethys junction region.

The paleogeography of Laurentia throughout the Neoproterozoic is critical for reconstructing global paleogeography due to its central position in the supercontinent Rodinia. We develop a new paleomagnetic pole from red siltstones and fine-grained sandstones of the early Neoproterozoic Jacobsville Formation which is now constrained to be ca. 990 Ma in age. High-resolution thermal demagnetization experiments resolve detrital remanent magnetizations held by hematite. These directions were reoriented within siltstone intraclasts and pass intraformational conglomerate tests—giving confidence that the magnetization is detrital and primary. An inclination-corrected mean paleomagnetic pole position for the Jacobsville Formation indicates that Laurentia's motion slowed down significantly following the onset of the Grenvillian orogeny. Prior rapid plate motion associated with closure of the Unimos Ocean between 1,110 and 1,090 Ma transitioned to slow drift of Laurentia across the equator in the late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic. We interpret the distinct position of this well-dated pole from those in the Grenville orogen that have been assigned a similar age to indicate that the ages of the poles associated with the Grenville Loop likely need to be revised to be younger due to prolonged exhumation.

Northwest Iran is a seismically active region dominated by NW-SE trending strike-slip faults, such as the North Tabriz and Qosha Dagh faults, and smaller NNE-SSW striking faults. The Bozgush Mountains are shaped by these faults and divided into two domains that show a difference in strike. To quantify rotational tectonic deformation in NW Iran, we performed a paleomagnetic study along three transects of the Bozgush and Qosha Dagh Mountains with 127 sites. Our large new paleomagnetic data set shows that the Bozgush Mountains did not rotate as a single rigid block. In the western domain of the Bozgush Mountains, we find evidence for clockwise vertical axis rotations of ∼40°, while the eastern domain has rotated up to ∼80° clockwise. Declinations of the western Bozgush domain fit well with observed declinations in the Qosha Dagh Mountains. Fault patterns show that the eastern domain of the Bozgush Mountains is divided by a set of NNE-SSW striking sinistral strike-slip faults, which created domino-style blocks that accommodated the additional 40° of rotation. We estimate that these extra rotations have resulted in around 4 km of N-S shortening and more than 1.5 km of differential uplift.

The kinematic history of the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) is crucial for interpreting its geological record related to subduction initiation processes and the paleogeography of the junction between the Paleo-Pacific and Tethyan oceanic realms. However, reconstructing PSP's kinematic history is difficult because the plate has been surrounded by subduction zones for most of its history. In absence of marine magnetic anomalies to constrain PSP's motion relative to its neighboring plates, paleomagnetic data may be used as quantitative constraints on its motion. Previous paleomagnetic studies interpreted easterly deflected declinations to infer clockwise rotations of up to 90° since the Eocene. However, rotations inferred from these datasets may also reflect local block rotations related to plate margin deformation. We here re-evaluate to what extent paleomagnetic data from the PSP unequivocally demonstrate plate motion rather than local rotation. To this end, we provide new data from Guam, in the Mariana forearc, and reassess published paleomagnetic data. Our new data from Guam come from two localities in the Eocene, two in the Oligocene, and two in the Miocene. Our compilation assesses data quality against recently defined criteria. Our new results demonstrate that in Guam, declination differences of up to 35° exist in rocks of Eocene age, indicating local rotations. Our compilation identifies both clockwise and counterclockwise rotations from the plate margins, with little confidence which of these would reflect plate-wide rotation. We compiled paleolatitude data from igneous rocks, which we correct for microplate rotation constrained by intra-PSP marine magnetic anomalies and show a northward drift of the PSP of ∼15° since the Eocene, but without a paleomagnetic necessity for major vertical axis rotation. Relative Caribbean-North American plate motion is partitioned over the trench and intra-Caribbean plate faults that bound large scale tectonic blocks. Quantifying the kinematic evolution of this tectonic corridor is challenging because much of the region is submarine. We present an extensive regional paleomagnetic data set (1,330 cores from 136 sampling locations) from Eocene and younger rocks of the northern Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and use a statistical bootstrapping approach to quantify vertical axis block rotations. Our results show that the Puerto Rico–Virgin Island (PRVI) block and the Northern Lesser Antilles (NoLA) block formed two coherently rotating domains that both underwent at least 45° counterclockwise rotation since the Eocene. The first ∼20° occurred in tandem in late Eocene and Oligocene time, after which the blocks were separated in the Miocene by the opening of the Anegada Passage. The last 25° of rotation of the PRVI block ended in the middle Miocene, whereas the NoLA block rotated slower, until the latest Miocene. The boundary between the NoLA block and a non-rotated Southern Lesser Antilles was likely the Monserrat-Harvers fault zone. These results require hundreds of kilometers of intra-Caribbean motions with oroclinal bending of the trench or forearc sliver motion along the curved plate boundary as endmembers. These data invite a critical re-evaluation of the kinematic reconstruction of Caribbean-North American plate motion. The consequent changes in paleogeography may provide a new view on the enigmatic eastern Caribbean paleo-biogeography and the Paleogene dispersal of South American mammals toward the Greater Antilles.

Apparent polar wander paths (APWPs) calculated from paleomagnetic data describe the motion of tectonic plates relative to the Earth's rotation axis through geological time, providing a quantitative paleogeographic framework for studying the evolution of Earth's interior, surface, and atmosphere. Previous APWPs were typically calculated from collections of paleomagnetic poles, with each pole computed from collections of paleomagnetic sites, and each site representing a spot reading of the paleomagnetic field. It was recently shown that the choice of how sites are distributed over poles strongly determines the confidence region around APWPs and possibly the APWP itself, and that the number of paleomagnetic data used to compute a single paleomagnetic pole varies widely and is essentially arbitrary. Here, we use a recently proposed method to overcome this problem and provide a new global APWP for the last 320 million years that is calculated from simulated site-level paleomagnetic data instead of from paleopoles, in which spatial and temporal uncertainties of the original datasets are incorporated. We provide an updated global paleomagnetic database scrutinized against quantitative, stringent quality criteria, and use an updated global plate motion model. The new global APWP follows the same trend as the most recent pole-based APWP but has smaller uncertainties. This demonstrates that the first-order geometry of the global APWP is robust and reproducible. Moreover, we find that previously identified peaks in APW rate disappear when calculating the APWP from site-level data and correcting for a temporal bias in the underlying data. Finally, we show that a higher-resolution global APWP frame may be determined for time intervals with high data density, but that this is not yet feasible for the entire 320–0 Ma time span. Reconstructing Earth's past tectonic plate motion is vital for understanding its geological history, with implications for geodynamics, paleogeography, paleoclimatology, and resource exploration. However, many challenges exist in the reconstruction of subducted plates. While existing ocean basins can be reconstructed using marine magnetic anomalies and fracture zone data, the reconstruction of subducted plates lacked a clear framework due to varying interpretations of geological and geochemical data. Recently, however, a reconstruction protocol was developed to limit input data of a reconstruction to quantitative geological constraints. This approach avoids geodynamic interpretations, and yields transparent, reproducible, and adaptable reconstructions. In this thesis, this reconstruction protocol is applied to the southwest and west Panthalassa realm, resulting in kinematic reconstructions spanning from Patagonia to Japan, culminating in the complex reconstruction of the Junction Region between the Panthalassa and Tethys realms. The new reconstructions presented in this thesis have implications for both regional and global tectonics and geodynamics. The Cenozoic reconstruction of the SW Pacific region in a mantle reference frame shows that since subduction initiation, the Tonga-Kermadec slab was dragged laterally through the mantle for over 1200 km, including its lower-mantle portion. The most important finding of the Mesozoic SW Pacific reconstruction is that subduction along the East Gondwana margin continued until at least 90 Ma, and possibly until 79 Ma, which is 10 to 25 Ma longer than the generally accepted 100-105 Ma age for the end subduction there. In the southeast of the Panthalassa domain, the reconstruction of the Scotia Sea region shows that the South Sandwich subduction zone originates from Late Cretaceous (~80 Ma) subduction initiation below South Orkney continental crust, which is part of Antarctica. Ophiolites, fragments of oceanic lithosphere exposed on land, are typically found as isolated klippen in intensely deformed fold-thrust belts spanning hundreds to thousands of kilometers along-strike. Ophiolites whose geochemistry indicates that they formed above subduction zones, may have been relics of larger, once-coherent, oceanic lithosphere tracts that formed the leading edge of an upper plate below which subduction occurred; such tracts were subsequently dismembered by deformation and erosion during orogenesis and uplift. However, to what extent the first-order original coherence is maintained between ophiolitic klippen is difficult to assess. Here, we aim to evaluate whether the Jurassic forearc ophiolites overlying subduction complex rocks in California, now scattered over 1000 km and dismembered by the wider San Andreas Fault Zone, still maintain their original lithospheric coherence. To this end we (i) compile available crustal ages from all ophiolite klippen exposed in the Jurassic ophiolite belt of the western United States; (ii) review and kinematically reconstruct post-middle Jurassic deformation that occurred between the modern western coast and the stable North American craton to restore the original positions of the ophiolite fragments relative to each other and to North America, and (iii) perform a paleomagnetic analysis of a sheeted dyke sections of the Mt. Diablo and Josephine ophiolites to estimate the orientation of the spreading axis at which the Jurassic Californian forearc ophiolites formed. The latter analysis reveals that the original ridge orientation likely trended ∼080–260°, near-perpendicular to the orientation of the trench along the western margin of the ophiolite belt. We show that with these constraints, a straightforward ridge-transform system can explain the age distributions of the ophiolites with spreading rates of 6–7 cm/a. This thesis presents research on the paleogeographic data of Early Cretaceous granites and Mid-Late Jurassic limestones in the Zaduo area, Eastern Qiangtang Terrane, Tibetan Plateau, China. The granite study provides further insight into the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision, while the limestones have been remagnetized due to the India-Eurasia collision. The magnetic fabric of the remagnetized limestones documented the NNE-SSW oriented compression during the remagnetization. A comparative study of the remagnetized and unremagnetized rocks, which mainly concentrates on their rock magnetic properties, was also carried out. The combination of gravity and paleomagnetic data reveals a coupled lithosphere-scale oroclinal deformation of the eastern ending of the Qiangtang Terrane. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 investigates an Early Cretaceous granite in the Zaduo area and presents a new paleomagnetic investigation on the granite. Chapter 2 discusses the remagnetization of the Jurassic limestones in the Zaduo area and its implications for the India-Eurasia collision. Chapter 3 is about the lithosphere-scale oroclinal deformation of the eastern ending of the Qiangtang Terrane. Chapter 4 focuses on the remagnetization of the limestones and the NNE-SSW oriented compression during the India-Eurasia collision, and Chapter 5 is about the comparative study of the remagnetized and unremagnetized rocks.

Paleomagnetism provides the only quantitative tool to reconstruct the position and motion of tectonic plates and continents in deep geological time. These reconstructions often rely on apparent polar wander paths (APWPs), which describe the past position and motion of plates relative to the Earth’s spin axis. In addition to providing a paleomagnetic reference frame for paleogeography, these paths serve to quantify relative tectonic displacements with other lithospheric blocks. A long-discussed problem is that conventional approaches to computing polar wander do not propagate key sources of uncertainty in the underlying data, such as data scatter or age uncertainty, but proposed solutions remained mostly qualitative. Recently, this problem became more urgent: Rowley (2019, Tectonics) showed that as much as 50% of the data that underlie the currently most widely used global APWP are statistically significantly displaced relative to that APWP. This implies that the resolution at which a geologically meaningful statistical difference between a paleomagnetic dataset and an APWP may be determined, is strongly limited, which undermines the current tectonic and paleogeographic applications of paleomagnetism. This thesis aims to examine the causes of dispersion of paleomagnetic data behind APWPs and to build a global APWP in which key data uncertainties are propagated, such that it may be used to determine geologically meaningful relative displacements. We show that the uncertainty of APWPs computed from paleomagnetic poles, which is the current standard, is mostly determined by the arbitrary choice of how many datapoints are used per pole. This thesis then develops a novel approach in which apparent polar wander paths are computed from site-level paleomagnetic data instead of paleomagnetic poles. In this approach, larger weight is assigned to larger datasets and temporal and spatial uncertainties in the paleomagnetic data are incorporated. We present a global apparent polar

Obtaining accurate age control for fossils found on Java (Indonesia) has been and remains challenging due to geochronologic and stratigraphic uncertainties. In the 1890s, Dubois excavated numerous faunal fossils—including the first remains of Homo erectus—in sediments exposed along the Solo River at Trinil. Since then, various, and often contradictory age estimates have been proposed for the Trinil site and its fossils. However, the age of the fossil-bearing layers and the fossil assemblage remains inconclusive. This study constructs a chronostratigraphic framework for the Trinil site by documenting new stratigraphic sections and test pits, and by applying 40Ar/39Ar, paleomagnetic, and luminescence (pIRIR290) dating methods. Our study identifies two distinct, highly fossiliferous channel fills at the Trinil site. The stratigraphically lower Bone-Bearing Channel 1 (BBC-1) dates to 830–773 ka, while Bone-Bearing Channel 2 (BBC-2) is substantially younger with a maximum age of 450 ± 110 ka and an inferred minimum age of 430 ± 50 ka. Furthermore, significantly younger T2 terrace deposits are present at similar low elevations as BBC-1 and BBC-2. Our results demonstrate the presence of Early and Middle Pleistocene, and potentially even late Middle to Late Pleistocene fossiliferous sediments within the historical excavation area, suggesting that Dubois excavated fossils from at least three highly fossiliferous units with different ages. Moreover, evidence for reworking suggests that material found in the fossil-rich strata may originate from older deposits, introducing an additional source of temporal heterogeneity in the Trinil fossil assemblage. This challenges the current assumption that the Trinil H.K. fauna –which includes Homo erectus-is a homogeneous biostratigraphic unit. Furthermore, this scenario might explain why the Trinil skullcap collected by Dubois is tentatively grouped with Homo erectus fossils from Early Pleistocene sed

Our understanding of Earth's paleogeography relies heavily on paleomagnetic apparent polar wander paths (APWPs), which represent the time-dependent position of Earth's spin axis relative to a given block of lithosphere. However, conventional approaches to APWP construction have significant limitations. First, the paleomagnetic record contains substantial noise that is not integrated into APWPs. Second, parametric assumptions are adopted to represent spatial and temporal uncertainties even where the underlying data do not conform to the assumed distributions. The consequences of these limitations remain largely unknown. Here, we address these challenges with a bottom-up Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation scheme that operates on site-level paleomagnetic data. To demonstrate our methodology, we present an extensive compilation of site-level Cenozoic paleomagnetic data from North America, which we use to generate a high-resolution APWP. Our results demonstrate that even in the presence of substantial noise, polar wandering can be assessed with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution.

Sampling strategies used in paleomagnetic studies play a crucial role in dictating the accuracy of our estimates of properties of the ancient geomagnetic field. However, there has been little quantitative analysis of optimal paleomagnetic sampling strategies and the community has instead defaulted to traditional practices that vary between laboratories. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate the accuracy of alternative paleomagnetic sampling strategies through numerical experiments and an associated analytical framework. Our findings demonstrate a strong correspondence between the accuracy of an estimated paleopole position and the number of sites or independent readings of the time-varying paleomagnetic field, whereas larger numbers of in-site samples have a dwindling effect. This remains true even when a large proportion of the sample directions are spurious. This approach can be readily achieved in sedimentary sequences by distributing samples stratigraphically, considering each sample as an individual site. However, where the number of potential independent sites is inherently limited the collection of additional in-site samples can improve the accuracy of the paleopole estimate (although with diminishing returns with increasing samples per site). Where an estimate of the magnitude of paleosecular variation is sought, multiple in-site samples should be taken, but the optimal number is dependent on the expected fraction of outliers. The use of filters based on angular distance helps the accuracy of paleopole estimation, but leads to inaccurate estimates of paleosecular variation. We provide both analytical formulas and a series of interactive Jupyter notebooks allowing optimal sampling strategies to be developed from user-informed expectations.

Paleocene Baffin Island lavas—products of early Iceland mantle plume activity—are exceptionally well characterized geochemically but have poorly constrained stratigraphy, geochronology, and eruptive tempos. To provide better geologic context, we measured seven stratigraphic sections of the volcanic deposits and collected paleomagnetic data from 38 sites in the lavas and underlying Cretaceous sediments (Quqaluit Fm.). The average paleomagnetic pole from this study does not overlap with the expected pole for a stable North American locality at 60 Ma, yet the data have sufficient dispersion to average out secular variation. After ruling out other possibilities, we find that the picrites were probably erupted during a polarity transition, over less than 5 kyr. If so, the average eruption interval was ∼67 years per flow for the thickest sequence of exposed lavas. We also calculate that the flood basalts had a minimum total volume of ∼176 km3 (excluding submerged lavas in Baffin Bay). This implies a minimum eruption rate of ∼0.035 km3 yr−1, which is similar to rates found in West Greenland lavas but less than rates found in larger flood basalts. Despite this, the Baffin and West Greenland lavas temporally correlate with the “End C27n event” (a period of ∼2°C global warming) and may be its underlying cause., his work was supported by the National Science Foundation (award #1911699 to F. Meso– to Neoproterozoic geological and paleomagnetic data support a direct connection between Baltica and Laurentia in both Nuna and Rodinia supercontinents, however in different relative configurations. Previous paleomagnetic data limit the time of break-up of Nuna core configuration and ca. 90° rotation of Baltica relative to Laurentia between 1.27 Ga and 0.99 Ga. Despite the well documented relative motion of continents, the tectonic mode during the Meso– to Neoproterozoic has been questioned and the operation of single lid tectonics at 1.6–1.0 Ga during the Nuna-Rodinia supercontinent cycles has been proposed. In this study, new paleomagnetic and whole rock 40Ar-39Ar geochronological data from a basic dyke in Stugun central Sweden are combined with coeval data to produce a 1.22 Ga (1.244–1.200 Ga) moderate-quality paleomagnetic pole. This is done to better estimate the break-up time of the core of Nuna and explore the plate tectonics at the Mesoproterozoic. The new pole fills part of the 1.247–1.140 Ga gap in the paleomagnetic record of Baltica. By comparing apparent polar wander paths (APWPs) and calculated drift velocities, a break-up of Baltica and Laurentia at 1.12–1.04 Ga is suggested. Plate velocities calculated for Laurentia, Baltica and Siberia for the time of the Nuna supercycle are similar and low to moderately high corresponding with the present-day tectonic speeds. Furthermore, the obtained velocity peaks may be related with onset of the break-up of the Nuna supercontinent, the break-up of the direct Baltica–Laurentia connection in Nuna and nascent Rodinia. We suggest that the velocity peaks and large oscillating shifts in late Mesoproterozoic pole positions for Laurentia and Baltica result from a combination of relative plate motion and inertial interchange true polar wander (IITPW) events. In this study, new paleomagnetic and whole rock 40Ar-39Ar geochronological data from a basic dyke in Stugun central Sweden are combined with coeval data to produce a 1.22 Ga (1.244–1.200 Ga) moderate-quality paleomagnetic pole. This is done to better estimate the break-up time of the core of Nuna and explore the plate tectonics at the Mesoproterozoic. The new pole fills part of the 1.247–1.140 Ga gap in the paleomagnetic record of Baltica. By comparing apparent polar wander paths (APWPs) and calculated drift velocities, a break-up of Baltica and Laurentia at 1.12–1.04 Ga is suggested. Plate velocities calculated for Laurentia, Baltica and Siberia for the time of the Nuna supercycle are similar and low to moderately high corresponding with the present-day tectonic speeds. Furthermore, the obtained velocity peaks may be related with onset of the break-up of the Nuna supercontinent, the break-up of the direct Baltica–Laurentia connection in Nuna and nascent Rodinia. We suggest that the velocity peaks and large oscillating shifts in late Mesoproterozoic pole positions for Laurentia and Baltica result from a combination of relative plate motion and inertial interchange true polar wander (IITPW) events. Relative Caribbean-North American plate motion is partitioned over the trench and intra-Caribbean plate faults that bound large scale tectonic blocks. Quantifying the kinematic evolution of this tectonic corridor is challenging because much of the region is submarine. We present an extensive regional paleomagnetic dataset (1330 cores from 136 sampling locations) from Eocene and younger rocks of the northern Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and use a statistical bootstrapping approach to quantify vertical axis block rotations. Our results show that the Puerto Rico–Virgin Island (PRVI) block and the Northern Lesser Antilles (NoLA) block formed two coherently rotating domains that both underwent at least 45° counterclockwise rotation since the Eocene. The first ∼20° occurred in tandem in late Eocene and Oligocene time, after which the blocks were separated in the Miocene by the opening of the Anegada Passage. The last 25° of rotation of the PRVI block ended in the middle Miocene, whereas the NoLA block rotated slower, until the latest Miocene. The boundary between the NoLA block and a non-rotated Southern Lesser Antilles was likely the Monserrat-Harvers fault zone. These results require hundreds of kilometers of intra-Caribbean motions with oroclinal bending of the trench or forearc sliver motion along the curved plate boundary as endmembers. These data invite a critical re-evaluation of the kinematic reconstruction of Caribbean-North American plate motion. The consequent changes in paleogeography may provide a new view on the enigmatic eastern Caribbean paleo-biogeography and the Paleogene dispersal of South American mammals toward the Greater Antilles.

We investigate the amplitude and frequency of directional geomagnetic change since 15 ka in the Northern North Atlantic (∼67o N) using 5 ‘ultra-high’ resolution continental shelf sediment cores deposited at rates greater than 1 m/kyr. The ages of these cores are constrained by 103 radiocarbon dates with reservoir ages assessed through tephra correlation to terrestrial archives. Our study aims to address many of the uncertainties that are common in sedimentary paleomagnetic studies, including signal attenuation in low to moderate resolution archives and difficulty to demonstrate reproducibility in higher resolution archives. The ‘ultra-high’ accumulation rates of our cores reduce ‘lock-in’ and smoothing uncertainties associated with magnetic acquisition processes. Abundant radiocarbon dates along with an objective alignment algorithm provide a test of signal reproducibility at sub-millennial timescales. The PSV signal, evaluated as individual records and as a new stack (GREENICE15k), validates prior results, but provides stronger geochronological constraints, demonstrates a reproducible PSV signal and amplitude, and extends through the abrupt Bølling–Allerød and Younger Dryas climate transitions of the latest Pleistocene. While broadly consistent with time-varying spherical harmonic models and varve dated records from Northern Europe, we demonstrate greater variance and higher amplitudes—particularly at sub-millennial timescales. This robust variability on centennial timescales is rarely observed or discussed, but is likely important to our understanding of some of the most intriguing aspects of the geodynamo. Från Nya Zeeland så har en borrkärna från den största och yngsta vulkanen i Aucklands vulkaniska fält (Auckland volcanic field, AVF) extraherats för att undersöka vulkanfältets förflutna. Detta fält består till största delen av basalt och började bildas för ca 200 000 år sedan och består av ca 50 utdöda vulkaner. Den största av dessa vulkaner, Rangitoto utgör 41% av fältets vulkaniska material och är av särskilt intresse då denna vulkan är unik jämfört med de andra utdöda vulkanerna i området. Detta på grund av att alla andra övriga vulkaner i AVF är monogenetiska och bildats över väldigt korta tidsspann. Eftersom Rangitoto både är den yngsta vulkanen och är så olik alla de andra vulkanerna så tror man att de underliggande magmatiska processer som skapat AVF har genomgått en förändring de senaste hundratals åren, och därmed vill man veta hur den har förändrats för att bedöma framtida risker. Det har utförts många studier tidigare för att undersöka hur lång tid det tog för Rangitoto att bildas, med varierande slutsatser. Flera av de tidigare undersökningarna som utförts på borrkärnan har indikerat att tiden det tog mellan Rangitotos första och sista utbrott, under den så kallade skölduppbyggande fasen, tog högst 100 år. En metod som kan användas för att antingen stötta eller motsäga dessa tidigare resultat är paleomagnetiska analyser av det vulkaniska materialet där det kan undersökas hur materialets magnetiska inklination varierar beroende på djup. Efter bearbetning av data så kan en uppskattning tas fram över hur lång tid den sköldbyggande fasen tog, beroende på hur mycket inklinationen varierar. [EN] A magnetic and paleomagnetic study was carried out on weakly metamorphic Cambrian limestones from the southern limb of the Central Iberian Arc (CIA), a late-Variscan orocline located to the south of the Ibero-Armorican Arc (IAA). >270 cores were obtained from 32 sites located at 5 outcropping structures in the Urda-Los Navalucillos Formation of Montes de Toledo (Central Iberian Zone, Spain), in an area close to the hinge zone of the CIA. These outcrops are affected by two regional-scale Variscan folding phases, namely C1 and C3, which developed interference patterns. A characteristic paleomagnetic component was isolated in 19 sites at 4 of the structures, which shows different temporal relationships with C3 folds, ranging from possibly syn-folding to clearly post-folding. The resulting mean directions of the magnetic vector, in geographic coordinates, always show northward to north-western declinations and negative, low inclinations, suggesting acquisition during some normal polarity event(s) when Iberia was located in the southern hemisphere, i.e. prior to the geomagnetic reverse polarity Kiaman superchron. While the inclination of the paleomagnetic mean directions is coherent between structures, the declination ranges from N to NW, suggesting a vertical axis rotation synkinematic to C3 folding, and older than 318 Ma. These directions suggest that the southern limb of the CIA first underwent a 42° clockwise rotation during the late Carboniferous that can be related to the development of the CIA, and which has been differentially recorded by the paleomagnetic directions of the different structures. This was later followed by a large counterclockwise rotation related to the formation of the IAA, which affects to the entire paleomagnetic dataset.

Red Ereño is a red-stained ornamental and construction limestone with characteristic white fossil shells. Although exploited since Roman times, marketed worldwide and that the rock itself and its outcrop areas have been included in geological heritage inventories, the origin of its characteristic reddish colour remained unresolved. The aim of this work is to deepen the scientific knowledge of Red Ereño as a basis for understanding the characteristics of this stone and to make this information available for geoconservation actions. The mineralogical and petrological study, mainly based on optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and rock magnetism and paleomagnetic techniques, concluded that the red-staining mineral is pigmentary hematite. Moreover, the analysis stated that hematite precipitated after sedimentation but prior to burial diagenesis and before alpine inversion. Based on palaeomagnetic studies, it can be stated that mineralisation occurred during the Late Cretaceous. This work illustrates how scientific research on this potential heritage stone provides key information for geoconservation.

Åldern för jordens inre kärna är en gåta som har förbryllat forskare i många decennier. Allt från en ålder lika hög som jordens magnetfält (mellan 3,5 och 4,2 Ga) i den ena änden, ner till 0,5 Ga i den andra änden. Eftersom den inre kärnan existerar på en fullkomligt oåtkomlig plats i jordens innersta centrum, medför detta självklara svårigheter när det kommer till direkta observationer (med seismiska vågor har forskare däremot kunnat observera var den inre kärnans gräns är). Det finns inte heller något fast prov för närmare studier. På grund av detta måste forskarna ta till sig indirekta metoder för inre kärnans datering som termodynamisk modellering och paleomagnetisk analys. Det förstnämnda baseras på en del antaganden om bland annat de tryck- och temperaturförhållanden som bör råda i jordens inre. Genom termodynamisk modellering är det främst kärnans värmeledande förmåga som är av intresse för fastställning av när inre kärnans solidifiering började. Med hjälp av paleomagnetiska data har det undersökts hur jordens magnetfält, som genereras i kärnan, har förändrats med tiden. Detta kan ge information om när den inre kärnan bildades. En del studier visar att magnetfältet kan ha kollapsat före inre kärnans bildning. Anledningarna till att fastställa åldern för jordens inre kärna är flera. 1. En ålder för den inre kärnan skulle bringa mer klarhet i jordens termala historia. 2. Den inre kärnan anses vara den främsta drivkraften till jordens magnetfält (geodynamon), således är dess solidifiering av stor vikt för att förstå magnetfältet. 3. Everything from an age as high as the Earth's magnetic field (between 3.5 and 4.2 Ga) at one end, down to 0.5 Ga at the other end. Since the inner core exists in a completely inaccessible place in the innermost center of the Earth, this presents obvious difficulties when it comes to direct observations (however, with seismic waves, scientists have been able to observe where the boundary of the inner core is). There is also no solid sample for close studies. Because of this, the scientists must adopt indirect methods of inner core dating such as thermodynamic modeling and paleomagnetic analysis. The former is based on several assumptions about, among other things, the pressure and temperature conditions that should prevail in the Earth's interior. Through thermodynamic modelling, it is primarily the core's thermal conductivity that is of interest for determining when solidification of the inner core began. Using paleomagnetic data, it has been investigated how the Earth's magnetic field, which is generated in the core, has changed over time. This can provide information about when the inner core formed. Some studies show that the magnetic field may have collapsed shortly before the inner core formed. The reasons for determining the age of the Earth's inner core are several. 1. An age of the inner core would bring more clarity to the Earth's thermal history. 2. The inner core is considered the main driving force for the Earth's magnetic field (the geodynamo); thus, it’s solidification is of great importance for understanding the magnetic field. 3. The timing of the formation of the inner core may have saved the Earth's magnetic field. This may have occurred at a time in the Earth's history that coincided with the development of life, hence it may have played a contributing role for life during The Cambrian explosion. [EN] This book presents a significant amount of structural, paleomagnetic and magnetic fabric data in the Central High Atlas (Morocco). The authors thoroughly described and analyzed the present-day structure of this intraplate chain through 22 of cross-sections, potential field data analysis and 3D reconstruction. In addition, the authors propose a palinspastic reconstruction of the structure of the basin at 100 Ma (i.e., post-extension and pre-compression) to finally evaluate its Mesozoic and Cenozoic geodynamic evolution. This books presents (1) a unique three-dimensional model at the chain scale, (2) an analysis of the ca. 100 Ma remagnetization, to perform palinspastic restorations of most representative structures, (3) as well as the interpretation of the magnetic fabrics in order to unravel the tectonic or deformation setting that the rocks underwent in different parts of the basin. This book is of interest to structural geologists in Northern Africa, the Mediterranean and Iberia, as well as to those interested in inverted intraplate basins and paleomagnetists from around the planet. Also, this book is intended to help students to understand better the geological evolution of the Atlas and therefore Morocco and surrounding areas.

Reliable information on solar activity over the Holocene period is important to predict the Sun in the future and to understand the mechanism behind the Sun-climate linkage. Presently, there are discrepancies in the proxy data of solar activity due to reasons that are not yet understood. This leads to major uncertainties in Holocene solar reconstructions. This PhD project aims to improve the Holocene solar reconstructions with a new dataset and a better reconstruction method. The results are be important for s lar and Sun-climate studies as well as for a better understanding of past changes in the carbon cycle.Cosmogenic radionuclides such as 10Be in ice cores and 14C in tree rings are the best-known proxies for solar activity far back in time. The radionuclide records reflect a combination of production, transportation and deposition processes (atmospheric circulation (10Be) and carbon cycle (14C)). Presently, the different radionuclide records show disagreements regarding their long-term (millennial-scales) changes for unknown reasons. Moreover, the radionuclide records are also influenced by long term changes in the geomagnetic field that are not well constrained. This leads to major uncertainties in reconstructions of past changes in solar activity.This thesis is based on new 10Be measurements from 759 ice chip samples drilled at the East Antarctic site called Little Dome C (LDC). The new 10Be record continuously covers the entire Holocene. A Bayesian model was also developed to disentangle solar activity and geomagnetic field influences on the radionuclide records. The model was applied on the new LDC 10Be data and also on the existing 10Be data from other ice cores and tree-ring 14C data. The reconstructions show consistent short-term variations (decadal- and centennial-scale) of solar activity while longterm variations (multi-millennial-scale) are still uncertain. Long-term discrepancies are present among the 10Be records and the 14C data, especially for the

Obtaining accurate age control for fossils found on Java (Indonesia) has been and remains challenging due to geochronologic and stratigraphic uncertainties. In the 1890s, Dubois excavated numerous faunal fossils—including the first remains of Homo erectus—in sediments exposed along the Solo River at Trinil. Since then, various, and often contradictory age estimates have been proposed for the Trinil site and its fossils. However, the age of the fossil-bearing layers and the fossil assemblage remains inconclusive. This study constructs a chronostratigraphic framework for the Trinil site by documenting new stratigraphic sections and test pits, and by applying 40Ar/39Ar, paleomagnetic, and luminescence (pIRIR290) dating methods. Our study identifies two distinct, highly fossiliferous channel fills at the Trinil site. The stratigraphically lower Bone-Bearing Channel 1 (BBC-1) dates to 830–773 ka, while Bone-Bearing Channel 2 (BBC-2) is substantially younger with a maximum age of 450 ± 110 ka and an inferred minimum age of 430 ± 50 ka. Furthermore, significantly younger T2 terrace deposits are present at similar low elevations as BBC-1 and BBC-2. Our results demonstrate the presence of Early and Middle Pleistocene, and potentially even late Middle to Late Pleistocene fossiliferous sediments within the historical excavation area, suggesting that Dubois excavated fossils from at least three highly fossiliferous units with different ages. Moreover, evidence for reworking suggests that material found in the fossil-rich strata may originate from older deposits, introducing an additional source of temporal heterogeneity in the Trinil fossil assemblage. This challenges the current assumption that the Trinil H.K. fauna –which includes Homo erectus-is a homogeneous biostratigraphic unit. Furthermore, this scenario might explain why the Trinil skullcap collected by Dubois is tentatively grouped with Homo erectus fossils from Early Pleistocene sediments at Sangiran, while Trinil Fem

We have carried out a detailed paleomagnetic study of volcanic rocks (18 sites) and red beds (10 sites) from the Late-Carboniferous-Permian series of the Cadí Basin (Eastern Pyrenees). The study provides reliable Late Carboniferous-Permian paleomagnetic directions, in an area where paleomagnetic studies are scarce. The main characteristic component in both rock types shows a SSE direction with a shallow inclination and a dominant reverse polarity. The magnetic carriers, both in the volcanic rocks and the red beds, are magnetite and hematite. The main component is interpreted as a primary magnetization of Permian age in the red beds; in the Late Carboniferous volcanic rocks, the main component likely represents primary magnetization or early remagnetization. These results are consistent with the poles for the Iberian plate during the Permian and indicate an absence of regional vertical axis rotations for the Orri nappe, in whose hanging wall the Cadí Basin was transported southwards during the Pyrenean orogeny.

[EN] The western Iberian margin underwent complex evolution during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. It was subjected to successive extensional and compressional phases, where salt tectonics played a significant role in both. The role of onshore structures during basin formation and inversion is not fully understood, and different chronological relationships between structures have been proposed. To better understand the history of salt body emplacement, we present paleomagnetic and magnetic fabric data from Jurassic carbonates, comprising cover rocks of the diapiric system. Magnetic fabrics show two types of behavior. Type 1 fabrics show magnetic foliation parallel to bedding—the magnetic lineation, after bedding correction, is horizontal and parallel to the diapiric contacts. This fabric is a consequence of overpressure during salt migration, whose effect is limited to the area near the diapirs. Type 2 fabric is characterized by a magnetic lineation parallel to the strike of bedding and—the intermediate and minimum magnetic axes are dispersed on a vertical girdle parallel to the shortening direction. This is interpreted as a compressional fabric that developed during basin inversion. Paleomagnetic results reveal a stable paleomagnetic component carry by magnetite with characteristic unblocking temperatures (175–450 °C) and coercivities (30–100 mT). Twelve of the 14 calculated mean directions show homogeneous behavior in their magnetic properties and directions, with positive inclinations, northward directions, with synfolding to postfolding behavior. We calculated the remagnetization direction (Dec: 347.5°, Inc.: 51.3°) and compare it to the APWP. It was likely acquired during the Cretaceous Normal Superchron, following the extensional deformation phase and prior to basin inversion. The paleodips (i.e., the bedding at remagnetization times) indicate that tilting occurred mainly during the extensional stage, meaning that the diapirs had already been developed. This indica

The drift history of the Lhasa terrane from Gondwana to Asia plays a crucial role in understanding the Tethys evolution and true polar wander (TPW). However, few reliable paleomagnetic results from Jurassic strata are currently available for reconstructing its northward journey. We performed a combined paleomagnetic and geochronological study on Bima Formation strata in the Xigaze area. Combined with previous results from the Sangri area, our results reveal a paleolatitude of 8 ± 4°S at ∼180 Ma for the reference point (29.3°N, 90.3°E). Along with other paleomagnetic results from the Triassic to Cretaceous, our new results suggest that the Lhasa terrane motion accelerated from ∼2 cm/yr during ∼220–180 Ma to ∼17 cm/yr during ∼180–170 Ma. Paleolatitude information of the North Qiangtang terrane and Tethyan Himalaya is calculated from paleopoles that meet five criteria, which include (a) structural control, (b) well-determined rock age, (c) stepwise demagnetizations, (d) a minimum of 25 specimens or 8 sites are contained, and (e) robust field or reversal tests are provided. Both terranes also show significant acceleration during their northward motion, which may be related to oceanic slab subduction. Thus, all Gondwana-derived microcontinents seem to share a significant acceleration during their northward motion. In addition, recent paleomagnetic results from volcanic rocks dated at ∼155 Ma subdivide the overall northward motion during ∼170–130 Ma into two stages, which include a southward drift during ∼170–155 Ma followed by northward motion during ∼155–130 Ma. These results support the fast Late Jurassic TPW during a ∼10 Myr time span.

Abstract: The stratigraphic scale of the Eastern Paratethys is revised based on a study of the Neogene stratotype and reference sections, their biotic characteristics, and paleomagnetic and sedimentological data. New data on the correlation of its regional subdivisions with the Central Paratethys and Mediterranean stratotypes are presented. The section “Regional Stage Scale of the Eastern Paratethys” considers the history of identification and a brief description of the horizons of the regional scale, which later became regional stages, as well as their historical stratotypes and lectostratotypes, and division into Beds and Substages. The section “History of Separate Biota Groups” provides reviews on the most important groups of fauna, phytoplankton, and terrestrial vegetation, as well as on magnetostratigraphy, the possibility of correlation and dating of sections based on these data, and comparison with the Central Paratethys and stratotypes of the Mediterranean. In conclusion, the main results of the revision of the stratigraphic scheme of the Neogene of the Eastern Paratethys are given.

Paleomagnetic poles used to compute apparent polar wander paths (APWPs) are strongly dispersed, which was recently shown to cause a large fraction (>50%) of these poles to be statistically distinct from the APWP to which they contributed, suggesting that current statistical approaches overestimate paleomagnetic resolution. Here, we analyze why coeval paleopoles are so dispersed, using the paleopoles behind the most recent global APWP and a compilation of paleomagnetic data obtained from <10 Ma volcanic rocks (PSV10). We find that paleopoles derived from sedimentary rocks, or from data sets underrepresenting paleosecular variation (PSV), are more dispersed and more frequently displaced. We show that paleopoles based on a smaller number of paleomagnetic sites are more dispersed than poles based on larger data sets, revealing that the degree to which PSV is averaged is an important contributor to the pole dispersion. We identify as a fundamental problem, however, that the number of sites used to calculate a paleopole, and thus the dispersion of coeval paleopoles, is essentially arbitrary. We therefore explore a different approach in which reference poles of APWPs are calculated from site-level data instead of paleopoles, thereby assigning larger weight to larger data sets. We introduce a bootstrap-based method for comparing a collection of paleomagnetic data with a reference data set on the same hierarchical level, whereby the uncertainty is weighted against the number of paleomagnetic sites. Finally, our study highlights that demonstrating smaller tectonic displacements requires larger paleomagnetic data sets, and that such data sets can strongly improve future APWPs.

The recently developed Micromagnetic Tomography (MMT) technique combines advances in high resolution scanning magnetometry and micro X-ray computed tomography. This allows precise recovery of magnetic moments of individual magnetic grains in a sample using a least squares inversion approach. Here we investigate five factors, which are governing the mathematical validity of MMT solutions: grain concentration, thickness of the sample, size of the sample's surface, noise level in the magnetic scan, and sampling interval of the magnetic scan. To compute the influence of these parameters, we set up series of numerical models in which we assign dipole magnetizations to randomly placed grains. Then we assess how well their magnetizations are resolved as function of these parameters. We expanded the MMT inversion to also produce the covariance and standard deviations of the solutions, and use these to define a statistical uncertainty ratio and signal strength ratio (SSR) for each solution. We show that the magnetic moments of a majority of grains under the inspected conditions are solved with very small uncertainties. However, increasing the grain density and sample thickness carry major challenges for the MMT inversions, demonstrated by uncertainties larger than 100% for some grains. Fortunately, we can use the SSR to extract grains with the most accurate solutions, even from these challenging models. Hereby we have developed a quick and objective routine to individually select the most reliable grains from MMT results. This will ultimately enable determining paleodirections and paleointensities from large subsets of grains in a sample using MMT.

At Cabo Vírgenes, at the mouth of the Strait of Magellan, up to 70 m of till, gravel, sand, and stony silt were deposited in a grounding-line environment at the front of the Magellan lobe along a front several tens of kilometres wide. Accommodation space for the sediments was produced by glacio-isostatic depression resulting from the advance of the Magellan lobe to the Atlantic coast. At that time, the ‘moat’ in which the sediments accumulated may have been seaward of the modern Atlantic shoreline because the continental shelf is shallow and sea level was much lower than it is today. The sediments at Cabo Vírgenes are normally magnetized, carry no reversed overprints, and thus probably date to the Brunhes Chron (<0.774 Ma). Seacliff exposures south of the Strait of Magellan along the Atlantic coast of northern Tierra de Fuego expose two tills separated by glaciofluvial sediments. Although not dated, the tills record two advances of the Magellan lobe onto the Atlantic continental shelf. The location of the exposures relative to Cabo Vírgenes indicates that the upper of the two tills may correlate with the Cabo Vírgenes drift. The Tres de Enero highway cut, 90 km northwest of Cabo Vírgenes, exposes lodgement tills deposited during the Great Patagonian glaciation (GPG) – two stacked, normally magnetized tills overlie a reversely magnetized till. Truncated sand wedges separate each of the three tills, indicating that the tills record three separate Early to Middle Pleistocene glaciations. The structure of the Earth’s magnetic field today is constantly changing, driven by convection currents in the Earth’s outer core. The dominant force in these convection currents is the rotation of the Earth, and so many paleomagnetists assume that when averaged over long enough timescales, the field behaves like a bar magnet centered on the Earth’s spin axis. This is known as the Geocentric Axial Dipole (GAD) hypothesis. Igneous rocks and other materials can preserve a record of the direction and strength of the Earth’s magnetic field at the time that they formed. Global records of Earth’s magnetic field direction (paleodirection) from igneous rocks over the last 10 million years require only a small deviation from a GAD field, whereas global records of the field strength (paleointensity) display a latitudinal distribution which is highly inconsistent with a dipole. One problematic aspect of paleointensity records is that some rocks violate the assumptions of the paleointensity experiment, leading to inaccurate estimates of paleointensity. We describe two statistical methods which deal with different behaviors that are related in some way to these inaccurate results. The Bias Corrected Estimation of Paleointensity (BiCEP) method tries to find a relationship between non ideal behavior in the experiment and bias in the results, allowing us to obtain accurate paleointensities without excluding specimens from our analyses. The Thermal Resolution of Unblocking Temperatures (TROUT) method allows us to isolate a range of measurement temperatures that are appropriate to use in a paleointensity analysis.We present a set of high quality paleointensity data from Hawaii, which we analyze using the aforementioned BiCEP method. We also reanalyze data from paleointensity studies targeting similar lithologies from northern Israel and Antarctica using the same methodology. The Abocador de Can Mata (ACM) composite stratigraphic sequence (els Hostalets de Pierola, Vallès-Penedès Basin, NE Iberian Peninsula) has yielded a diverse primate assemblage from the late Aragonian (Middle to Late Miocene). Detailed litho-, bio-, and magnetostratigraphic control has enabled an accurate dating of these fossil remains. Comparable data, however, were lacking for the nearby locality of Can Mata 1 (CM1), which yielded a dryopithecine canine of a female individual. Given the lack of hipparionin equids and giraffids, CM1 has been correlated to the latest Aragonian (Mammal Neogene [MN] zone MN7+8). Here we revise the age of CM1 based on fieldwork and associated paleomagnetic samplings undertaken in 2018–2021. Our results extend the ACM composite sequence upward and indicate that CM1 correlates to the earliest Vallesian (MN9). The updated ACM sequence has a thickness of ∼300 m and comprises 12 magnetozones correlated to subchrons C5Ar.1r to C5n.2n (∼12.6–11.1 Ma; latest MN6 to earliest MN9, late Aragonian to earliest Vallesian). CM1 is correlated to C5r.1r (11.146–11.056 Ma), with an interpolated age of 11.11 Ma, thus postdating the dispersal of hipparionin horses into the Vallès-Penedès Basin—which is correlated to the previous subchron C5r.1n, with an interpolated age of 11.18 Ma, and by definition marks the beginning of the Vallesian. CM1 also minimally postdates the earliest record of giraffids at ACM—representing their earliest well-dated occurrence in the basin—being correlated to C5r.1n with an interpolated age of 11.11 Ma. We conclude that CM1 has an earliest Vallesian (MN9) age of ∼11.1 Ma, intermediate between the Aragonian dryopithecins and the Vallesian hispanopithecins. Ongoing paleontological surveillance at ACM thus offers the prospect to yield additional earliest Vallesian ape remains, which are essential to clarify their taxonomic allocation as well as to confirm whether hispanopithecins evolved locally from dryopithecins rather than immig

This article is composed of three independent commentaries about the state of Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles (Goldman et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1002/essoar.10508554.1) in the Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism, and Electromagnetism (GPE) section and discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting them. Each commentary focuses on a different topic: Global collaboration, reproducibility, data sharing and infrastructure; Inclusive equitable, and accessible science: Involvement, challenges, and support of early career, BIPOC, women, LGBTQIA+, and/or disabled researchers; Community engagement, citizen science, education, and stakeholder involvement. Data sharing practices and open repository use still varies strongly between GPE communities. Some have a long tradition of data sharing; others are only starting it. Globally, GPE leadership is strongly dominated by white males and diversity may increase through the creation of Science Equality Commissions. Improved global stakeholder involvement can increase research impacts and help fight inequalities. In all investigated topics we see promising beginnings but also recognize obstacles that include a lack of funding, a lack of understanding of diversity, and prioritizing short-term gain over long-term benefit. Nonetheless, we are hopeful that our community will embrace ICON science
