We present a new volatility basis set (VBS) representation of aromatic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) for atmospheric chemistry models by fitting a statistical oxidation model with aerosol microphysics (SOM-TOMAS) to results from laboratory chamber experiments. The resulting SOM-VBS scheme also including previous work on SOA formation from semi- and intermediate volatile organic compounds (S/IVOCs) is implemented in the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model and applied to simulation of observations from the Korea-United States Air Quality Study (KORUS-AQ) field campaign over South Korea in May–June 2016. Our SOM-VBS scheme can simulate the KORUS-AQ organic aerosol (OA) observations from aircraft and surface sites better than the default schemes used in GEOS-Chem including for vertical profiles, diurnal cycle, and partitioning between hydrocarbon-like OA and oxidized OA. Our results confirm the important contributions of oxidized primary OA and aromatic SOA found in previous analyses of the KORUS-AQ data and further show a large contribution from S/IVOCs. Model source attribution of OA in surface air over South Korea indicates one third from domestic anthropogenic emissions, with a large contribution from toluene and xylenes, one third from external anthropogenic emissions, and one third from natural emissions. © 2023. MOA accounts for 18% of the organic aerosol mass and correlates with locally produced Aitken mode particles. This indicates that biogenic processes are not only a significant source of aerosols at Villum, but MOA also appears to be formed in the vicinity of the measurement site. This local geographical origin was confirmed through air mass back trajectory modelling and source-receptor analysis. During May, air masses frequently arrived from the east, with source regions for the MOA factor and therewith MSA located in the Barents Sea and Lincoln Sea with lesser contributions from the Greenland Sea. The light-absorbing organic aerosol (OA) constitutes an important fraction of absorbing components, counteracting major cooling effect of aerosols to climate. The mechanisms in linking the complex and changeable chemistry of OA with its absorbing properties remain to be elucidated. Here, by using solvent extraction, ambient OA from an urban environment was fractionated according to polarity, which was further nebulized and online characterized with compositions and absorbing properties. Water extracted high-polar compounds with a significantly higher oxygen to carbon ratio (O/C) than methanol extracts. A transition O/C of about 0.6 was found, below and above which the enhancement and reduction of OA absorptivity were observed with increasing O/C, occurring on the less polar and high polar compounds, respectively. In particular, the co-increase of nitrogen and oxygen elements suggests the important role of nitrogen-containing functional groups in enhancing the absorptivity of the less polar compounds (e.g., forming nitrogen-containing aromatics), while further oxidation (O/C > 0.6) on high-polar compounds likely led to fragmentation and bleaching chromophores. The results here may reconcile the previous observations about darkening or whitening chromophores of brown carbon, and the parametrization of O/C has the potential to link the changing chemistry of OA with its polarity and absorbing properties.

Particulate matter (PM) has become a major concern in terms of human health and climate impact. In particular, the source apportionment (SA) of organic aerosols (OA) present in submicron particles (PM1) has gained relevance as an atmospheric research field due to the diversity and complexity of its primary sources and secondary formation processes. Moreover, relatively simple but robust instruments such as the Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) are now widely available for the near-real-time online determination of the composition of the non-refractory PM1. One of the most used tools for SA purposes is the source-receptor positive matrix factorisation (PMF) model. Even though the recently developed rolling PMF technique has already been used for OA SA on ACSM datasets, no study has assessed its added value compared to the more common seasonal PMF method using a practical approach yet. In this paper, both techniques were applied to a synthetic dataset and to nine European ACSM datasets in order to spot the main output discrepancies between methods. The main advantage of the synthetic dataset approach was that the methods' outputs could be compared to the expected "true"values, i.e. the original synthetic dataset values. This approach revealed similar apportionment results amongst methods, although the rolling PMF profile's adaptability feature proved to be advantageous, as it generated output profiles that moved nearer to the truth points. Nevertheless, these results highlighted the impact of the profile anchor on the solution, as the use of a different anchor with respect to the truth led to significantly different results in both methods. In the multi-site study, while differences were generally not significant when considering year-long periods, their importance grew towards shorter time spans, as in intra-month or intra-day cycles. Inorganic nitrogen (IN) and organic nitrogen (ON) molecules constitute a significant part of atmospheric aerosol. Unlike IN, the total ON quantity remains largely unquantified due to a lack of a simple and direct measurement method. This analytical deficiency hinders the quantitative assessment of the various environmental and health effect impacts by aerosol ON. In this work, we developed an analyzer system that utilizes programmed thermal evolution of carbonaceous and nitrogenous aerosols and chemiluminescence detection coupled with the multivariate curve resolution data treatment to achieve simultaneous quantification of IN and ON. The system is capable of detecting IN and ON as low as 96 ng N per sample on a small filter aliquot (1 cm2) without any pretreatment. This method breakthrough opens the door to quantifying an important pool of aerosol N that was analytically inaccessible in the past and holds the promise to quantifying IN and ON in other environmental samples. As a demonstration, quantification of aerosol ON at an urban site in Hong Kong, China, in samples spanning over a year reveals ON constituting a significant fraction (9-52%) of the total aerosol nitrogen and having major source origins in both secondary formation and primary emissions. ©

Atmospheric aerosols have a significant impact on the climate system [1]. Depending on their chemical composition, aerosols cool the atmosphere directly by scattering solar radiation and indirectly through aerosol–cloud interactions, or warm the lower atmosphere by absorbing visible solar radiation. The most prevalent types of absorbing aerosols are black carbon (BC) and mineral dust. However, recent analyses from laboratory and field experiments have provided strong evidence for the existence of some organic aerosols (OA) with absorbing properties known as “brown carbon” [2]. The overall impact of aerosols in the atmosphere is still uncertain and can only be quantified by using numerical models. A prior step for that implies a proper representation of their abundance and chemical composition. However, atmospheric chemistry models have historically shown difficulties to simulate both properties, particularly OA [3]. In this work, we present the first step towards better constraining the burden and radiative forcing of aerosols in the atmosphere. We combine different observational datasets to evaluate the mass and chemical composition of aerosols (with special attention to OA) simulated by the Multiscale Online Nonhydrostatic AtmospheRe CHemistry (MONARCH) model developed at BSC. For that, we use a wide range of insitu surface measurements of aerosol particulate matter (PM) and chemical composition conducted by IDAEA-CSIC at three locations in northeast Spain.

Amines contributed to 51% of the semi-quantified concentrations, while nitriles, pyridine derivatives, and amides comprised 20%, 11%, and 8%, respectively, of the semi-quantified concentrations. Amines, nitriles, amides, and pyridine derivatives concentrations were higher during the dry season, which were attributed to meteorology and open biomass burning. Anthropogenic sources impacting air masses measured at Welgegund, as well as regional agricultural activities, were considered as the major sources of amines, while the regional influence of household combustion was most likely the main source of nitriles, amides, and pyridine derivatives. Here, we report an unexpectedly large acceleration in the effective heterogeneous OH reaction rate in the presence of NO. This 10-50 fold acceleration originates from free radical chain reactions, propagated by alkoxy radicals that form inside the aerosol by the reaction of NO with peroxy radicals, which do not appear to produce chain terminating products (e.g., alkyl nitrates), unlike gas phase mechanisms. A kinetic model, constrained by experiments, suggests that in polluted regions heterogeneous oxidation plays a much more prominent role in the daily chemical evolution of organic aerosol than previously believed.

The air quality in the outflow from Fort Worth, TX was studied in June 2011 at a location surrounded by oil and gas development in the Barnett Shale. The objectives of this study were to understand the major sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and organic aerosols and explore the potential influence each VOC source had on ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation. Measurements of VOCs were apportioned between six factors using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF): Natural Gas (25 ± 2%; ±99% CL); Fugitive Emissions (15 ± 2%); Internal Combustion Engines (15 ± 2%); Biogenic Emissions (7 ± 1%); Industrial Emissions/Oxidation 1(8 ± 1%); and Oxidation 2 (18 ± 2%). Reactivity calculations suggest the Biogenic and Oxidation 2 factors were the most likely VOC sources to influence local ozone. However, enough OH reactivity was calculated for factors related to the oil and gas development that they could incrementally increase O3. Three organic aerosol (OA) types were identified with PMF applied to high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometry measurements: hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA; 11% of mass) and two classes of oxidized OA (semi- and less-volatile OOA, SV and LV; 45% and 44%, respectively). The HOA correlated with the Internal Combustion Engine VOC factor indicating that a large fraction of the HOA was emitted by gasoline and diesel motors. The SV-OOA correlated with the oxidized VOC factors during most of the study, whereas a correlation between LV-OOA and the oxidized VOC factors was only observed during part of the study. It is hypothesized that SV-OOA and the oxidized VOC factors correlated reasonably well because these factors likely were separated by at most only a few oxidation generations on the oxidation pathway of organic compounds.

An Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer was deployed at five urban schools to examine spatial and temporal variability of organic aerosols (OA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) used for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere to apportion the sources of the OA across an urban area. The sources identified included hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA) and oxygenated OA (OOA). At all sites, the main source was OOA, which accounted for 62–73% of the total OA mass and was generally more oxidized compared to those reported in the Northern Hemisphere. This suggests that there are differences in aging processes or regional sources in the two hemispheres. Unlike HOA and BBOA, OOA demonstrated instructive temporal variations but not spatial variation across the urban area. Application of cluster analysis to the PMF-derived sources offered a simple and effective method for qualitative comparison of PMF sources that can be used in other studies.

Aerosol samples were collected in autumn 2007 on day- and nighttime basis in the northern receptor site of Beijing, China. The samples were analyzed for total carbon (TC) and water-soluble dicarboxylic acids (C-2-C-12), oxocarboxylic adds (C-2-C-9), glyoxal and methylglyoxal to better understand the photochemical aging of organic aerosols in the vicinity of Beijing. Concentrations of TC are 50% greater in daytime when winds come from Beijing than in nighttime when winds come from the northern forest areas. Most diacids showed higher concentrations in daytime, suggesting that the organics emitted from the urban Beijing and delivered to the northern vicinity in daytime are subjected to photo-oxidation to result in diacids. However, oxalic acid (C-2), which is the most abundant diacid followed by C-3 or C-4, became on average 30% more abundant in nighttime together with azelaic, omega-oxooctanoic and omega-oxononanoic acids, which are specific oxidation products of biogenic unsaturated fatty acids. Methylglyoxal, an oxidation product of isoprene and a precursor of oxalic acid, also became 29% more abundant in nighttime. Based on a positive correlation between C-2 and glyoxylic acid (omega C-2) in nighttime when relative humidity significantly enhanced, we propose a nighttime aqueous phase production of C-2 via the oxidation of omega C-2. We found an increase in the contribution of diacids to TC by 3 folds during consecutive clear days. This study demonstrates that diacids and related compounds are largely produced in the northern vicinity of Beijing via photochemical processing of organic precursors emitted from urban center and forest areas. Despite the high abundances of oxalic acid and related compounds in the marine aerosols, there is no consensus on what controls their distributions over the open ocean. Marine biological productivity could play a role in the production of DCA, but there is no substantial evidence to support this hypothesis. Here we present latitudinal distributions of DCA, oxoacids and -dicarbonyls in the marine aerosols from the remote Pacific. Their concentrations were found several times higher in more biologically influenced aerosols (MBA) than less biologically influenced aerosols. We propose isoprene and unsaturated fatty acids as sources of DCA as inferred from significantly higher abundances of isoprene-SOA tracers and azelaic acid in MBA. These results have implications toward the reassessment of climate forcing feedbacks of marine-derived SOA.

Aerosol mass spectrometers (AMS) are powerful tools in the analysis of the chemical composition of airborne particles, particularly organic aerosols which are gaining increasing attention. However, the advantages of AMS in providing on-line data can be outweighed by the difficulties involved in its use in field measurements at multiple sites. In contrast to the on-line measurement by AMS, a method which involves sample collection on filters followed by subsequent analysis by AMS could significantly broaden the scope of AMS application. We report the application of such an approach to field studies at multiple sites. An AMS was deployed at 5 urban schools to determine the sources of the organic aerosols at the schools directly. PM1 aerosols were also collected on filters at these and 20 other urban schools. The filters were extracted with water and the extract run through a nebulizer to generate the aerosols, which were analysed by an AMS. The mass spectra from the samples collected on filters at the 5 schools were found to have excellent correlations with those obtained directly by AMS, with r2 ranging from 0.89 to 0.98. Filter recoveries varied between the schools from 40 -115%, possibly indicating that this method provides qualitative rather than quantitative information. The stability of the organic aerosols on Teflon filters was demonstrated by analysing samples stored for up to two years. Application of the procedure to the remaining 20 schools showed that secondary organic aerosols were the main source of aerosols at the majority of the schools. Overall, this procedure provides accurate representation of the mass spectra of ambient organic aerosols and could facilitate rapid data acquisition at multiple sites where AMS could not be deployed for logistical reasons.

Long term exposure to vehicle emissions has been associated with harmful health effects. Children are amongst the most susceptible group and schools represent an environment where they can experience significant exposure to vehicle emissions. However, there are limited studies on children’s exposure to vehicle emissions in schools. The aim of this study was to quantify the concentration of organic aerosol and in particular, vehicle emissions that children are exposed to during school hours. Therefore an Aerodyne compact time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (TOF-AMS) was deployed at five urban schools in Brisbane, Australia. The TOF-AMS enabled the chemical composition of the non- refractory (NR-PM1) to be analysed with a high temporal resolution to assess the concentration of vehicle emissions and other organic aerosols during school hours. At each school the organic fraction comprised the majority of NR-PM1 with secondary organic aerosols as the main constitute. At two of the schools, a significant source of the organic aerosol (OA) was slightly aged vehicle emissions from nearby highways. More aged and oxidised OA was observed at the other three schools, which also recorded strong biomass burning influences. Primary emissions were found to dominate the OA at only one school which had an O:C ratio of 0.17, due to fuel powered gardening equipment used near the TOF-AMS. The diurnal cycle of OA concentration varied between schools and was found to be at a minimum during school hours. The major organic component that school children were exposed to during school hours was secondary OA. Peak exposure of school children to HOA occurred during school drop off and pick up times. Unless a school is located near major roads, children are exposed predominately to regional secondary OA as opposed to local emissions during schools hours in urban environments.

This thesis reports a comprehensive study on the physical and chemical properties of airborne particles in Brisbane, especially around schools. The sources and potential toxicity of the particles were identified, enabling an assessment of the contributing factors to children's exposure at school. The results from this thesis give a quantitative estimate of the range of airborne particles that children are exposed to at urban schools with different traffic conditions.

Vehicle emissions have been linked to detrimental health effects with children thought to be more susceptible (See e.g., Ryan et al 2005). In an urban environment a major source of organic aerosols (OA) are vehicle emissions. The ambient concentration of OA is dynamic in nature and the use of an aerosol mass spectrometer can achieve the necessary temporal resolution to capture the daily variation of OA (Jimenez et al 2009). Currently there is a limited understanding of effects of long term exposure to traffic emissions on children’s health. In the present study, we used an aerosol mass spectrometer to monitor OA and determine children’s potential exposure at school to traffic emissions.In this paper, we present the preliminary results of this investigation. The study is a part of a larger project aimed at gaining a holistic picture of the exposure of children to traffic related pollutants, known as UPTECH (www.ilaqh.qut.edu.au/Misc/ UPTECH%20Home.htm).

Atmospheric aerosols are a highly relevant component of the climate system affecting atmospheric radiative transfer and the hydrological cycle. As opposed to other key atmospheric constituents with climatic relevance, atmospheric aerosol particles are highly heterogeneous in time and space with respect to their size, concentration, chemical composition and physical properties. Many aspects of their life cycle are not understood, making them difficult to represent in climate models and hard to control as a pollutant. Aerosol-cloud interactions in particular are infamous as a major source of uncertainty in future climate predictions. Field measurements are an important source of information for the modeling community and can lead to a better understanding of chemical and microphysical processes. In this study, field data from urban, marine, and arid settings are analyzed and the impact of meteorological conditions on the evolution of aerosol particles while in the atmosphere is investigated. Particular attention is given to organic aerosols, which are a poorly understood component of atmospheric aerosols. Local wind characteristics, solar radiation, relative humidity and the presence or absence of clouds and fog are found to be crucial factors in the transport and chemical evolution of aerosol particles. Organic aerosols in particular are found to be heavily impacted by processes in the liquid phase (cloud droplets and aerosol water). The reported measurements serve to improve the process-level understanding of aerosol evolution in different environments and to inform the modeling community by providing realistic values for input parameters and validation of model calculations.

The recent development of thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) has greatly reduced time and labor in their quantification by eliminating the laborious solvent extraction and sample concentration steps in the traditional approach that relies on solvent extraction. The simplicity of the TD-GCMS methods has afforded us concentration data of NPOCs in more than 90 aerosol samples in two aerosol field studies and 20 vehicular emissions-dominated source samples in Hong Kong over the past few years. In this work, we examine the interspecies relationships between select NPOCs and their concentration ratios to elemental carbon (EC) among the ambient samples and among the source samples. Our analysis indicates that hopanes were mainly from vehicular emissions and they were significantly oxidized in ambient PM. The hopane/EC ratio in ambient samples was on average less than half of the ratio in vehicular emissions-dominated source samples. This highlights the necessity in considering oxidation loss in applying organic tracer data in source apportionment studies. Select PAH/EC ratio-ratio plots reveal that PAHs had diverse sources and vehicular emissions were unlikely a dominant source for PAHs in Hong Kong. Observations during the 2006 dry season of highly elevated concentrations of cyanides in the atmosphere above Mexico City (MC) and the surrounding plains demonstrate that biomass burning (BB) significantly impacted air quality in the region. We find that during the period of our measurements, fires contribute more than half of the organic aerosol mass and submicron aerosol scattering, and one third of the enhancement in benzene, reactive nitrogen, and carbon monoxide in the outflow from the plateau. The combination of biomass burning and anthropogenic emissions will affect ozone chemistry in the MC outflow.

Here we report a new method for measuring the heterogeneous chemistry of submicron organic aerosol particles using a continuous flow stirred tank reactor. This approach is designed to quantify the real time heterogeneous kinetics, using a relative rate method, under conditions of low oxidant concentration and long reaction times that more closely mimic the real atmosphere. A general analytical expression, which couples the aerosol chemistry with the flow dynamics in the chamber is developed and applied to the heterogeneous oxidation of squalane particles by hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the presence of O2. In general, this approach provides a new way to examine how the chemical aging of organic particles measured at short reaction times and high oxidant concentrations in flow tubes might differ from the long reaction times and low oxidant levels found in the real atmosphere.

Isoprene, monoterpenes, β-caryophyllene, and toluene are known to be important secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors. In this study, characteristic SOA tracers of these precursors were quantified in ambient samples of PM2.5 taken in Hong Kong and their contributions to SOA were estimated using a tracer-based method. Samples were collected every other day from four sampling sites during a field measurement campaign in the summer of 2006. Fourteen SOA tracers, along with twenty-four other polar oxygenated compounds, were identified and quantified using gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry with prior trimethylsilylation. Concentrations of the individual tracers ranged from a few tenths to a few hundreds ng m-3. The tracer concentrations were found to be one order of magnitude higher on days under regional transport influences due to elevated oxidant levels than on days under mainly local emissions influences. Using the measured SOA tracer concentrations in the ambient aerosols and laboratory-derived tracer mass fractions reported by Kleindienst et al. [2007], we estimated that the average SOA attributable to isoprene, monoterpenes, β-caryophyllene, and toluene was 8.83 μg m-3 on days under regional transport influences versus 0.99 μg m-3 on days under mainly local emissions influences, accounting for approximately 45% and 14%, respectively, of the ambient OC concentrations. The tracer-based estimates indicate that monoterpenes and β-caryophyllene are significant contributors to ambient PM2.5 in the summer, which may be due to the high emissions of these biogenic hydrocarbons in Hong Kong.

Replicate analysis for 132 organic compounds showed relative standard deviations < 10\%, with the majority < 5\%. Accuracy for 15 PAHs, determined with NIST standard reference material (SRM) 1649a urban dust, was within 5\% of the certified values. TD-GC/MS and SE-GC/MS method comparisons for 14 Hong Kong ambient samples agreed within 11\% for 106 non-polar compounds. For 19 Tong Liang, China samples, agreement was within 13\% for 23 PAHs. Atmospheric aerosols play an important role in atmospheric processes. These aerosol particles can affect climate through scattering, transmission and absorption of radiation as well as acting as cloud condensation nuclei. It has recently been found that fatty acids reside on the surfaces of marine and continental aerosols. In this research, an attempt has been made to understand the structures and properties of such organic coated aerosols using Molecular Dynamics simulation. The model particle consisted of a water droplet coated with fatty acid. The density profile (using both Coarse-Grained and Atomistic/United atom models) demonstrated that such aerosol particles have an inverted micelle structure consisting of an aqueous core and with the hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails exposed to the atmosphere. For smaller chains, with the organic molecules directed radially outwards from the water - organic interface) the normal pressure profile showed that the organic coating is under tension resulting in a 'negative' surface tension. As a result, such particles would have an inverse Kelvin vapor pressure effect and would be able to process water vapor despite the hydrophobic surface. Following the work on surface tension, the rate of water uptake by coated aerosols was computed. It was found that the sticking coefficient of water vapor on such particles was about a sixth of that on pure water droplets. This may seem to imply that the net condensation rate is lower, but we also need to take into account the evaporation of water from such particles. With a significant reduction in the evaporation rate (the coating lends greater stability to the particle resulting in reduced evaporation rate), the equilibrium vapor pressure of water on such particles reduced, resulting in a "net water attractor". Thus if such structures were created in sufficient concentration, they might be important contributors in the cloud condensation process. Next the effect of longer Fatty acid molecules

Heterogeneous reactions of organic aerosols with atmospheric oxidants are important processes that affect the hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activities of atmospheric aerosols. An electrodynamic balance (EDB) coupled with Raman spectroscopy is a particularly attractive platform for studying atmospheric reactions since it allows long-duration (days) particle levitation and reactions at atmospherically relevant low-oxidant concentrations can be investigated. In this study, we demonstrated the use of an EDB/Raman system to investigate the heterogeneous reactions of oleic acid particles with ozone (240-280ppb) under ambient temperatures (22-24'C) and dry conditions (relative humidity < 5\%) over a period of 20h. The Raman signatures of the ozone-processed oleic acid particles indicate the formation of oxidation products predominately consisting of peroxidic compounds (O-O groups of peroxides and/or ozonides), carbonyl (C=O) and hydroxyl (O-H) functional characteristics, which are consistent with the predictions of the Criegee mechanism as well as the results reported in the literature. We also confirmed that the Raman signatures of the reacted particles at atmospheric and much higher (> 10ppm) ozone concentrations are practically the same, which provides assurance to the use of elevated ozone concentrations in reaction studies of the oleic acid-ozone system in the literature. The ratio of the percentage of mass loss (due to evaporation of volatile organic products) to the percentage of oleic acid conversion was estimated to be 0.05. It is important to quantify their contributions to the total aerosol mass for the identification of aerosol sources and subsequently formulating effective control measures. The organic carbon (OC) mass can be determined by an aerosol carbon analyzer; however, there is no direct method for the determination of the mass of organic compounds, which also contain N, H, and O atoms in addition to C. The often-adopted approach is to estimate the organic mass (OM) from OC multiplying by a factor. However, this OC-to-OM multiplier was rarely measured for a lack of appropriate methods for OM. We report here a top-down approach to determine OM by coupling thermal gravimetric and chemical analyses. OM is taken to be the mass difference of a filter before and after heating at 550 degrees C in air for 4h minus mass losses due to elemental carbon (EC), volatile inorganic compounds (e.g., NH4NO3), and loss of aerosol-associated water that arise from the heating treatment. The losses of EC and inorganic compounds are determined through chemical analysis of the filter before and after the heating treatment. We analyzed 37 ambient aerosol samples collected in Hong Kong during the winter of 2003, spring of 2004, and summer of 2005. A value of 2.1 +/- 0.3 was found to be the appropriate factor to convert OC to OM in these Hong Kong aerosol samples. If the dominant air mass is classified into two categories, then an OM-to-OC ratio of 2.2 was applicable to aerosols dominated by continent-originated air mass, and 1.9 was applicable to aerosols dominated by marine air mass. OM is taken to be the mass difference of a filter before and after heating at 550 degrees C in air for 4h minus mass losses due to elemental carbon (EC), volatile inorganic compounds (e.g., NH4NO3), and loss of aerosol-associated water that arise from the heating treatment. The losses of EC and inorganic compounds are determined through chemical analysis of the filter before and after the heating treatment. We analyzed 37 ambient aerosol samples collected in Hong Kong during the winter of 2003, spring of 2004, and summer of 2005. A value of 2.1 +/- 0.3 was found to be the appropriate factor to convert OC to OM in these Hong Kong aerosol samples. If the dominant air mass is classified into two categories, then an OM-to-OC ratio of 2.2 was applicable to aerosols dominated by continent-originated air mass, and 1.9 was applicable to aerosols dominated by marine air mass. PM2.5 aerosols were collected in Nanjing, a typical mega-city in China, during summer and winter 2004 and were characterized for aromatic and cyclic compounds using a GC/MS technique to understand the air pollution problem. They include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, phthalates and hydroxy-PAHs (OH-PAHs). PAHs, hopanes and OH-PAHs presented higher concentrations in winter (26–178, 3.0–18, and 0.013–0.421 ng m−3, respectively) than in summer (12–96, 1.6–11, and 0.029–0.171 ng m−3, respectively) due to an enhanced coal burning for house heating and atmospheric inversion layers developed in the cold season. In contrast, phthalates are more abundant in summer (109–368 ng m−3, average 230 ng m−3) than in winter (33–390 ng m−3, average 170 ng m−3) due to an enhanced evaporation from plastics during the hot season and the subsequent deposition on the pre-existing particles. Generally, all the identified compounds showed higher concentrations in nighttime than in daytime due to inversion layers and increased emissions from heavy-duty trucks at night. PAHs, hopanes and phthalates in Nanjing aerosols are 5–100 times more abundant than those in Los Angeles, USA, indicating a serious air pollution problem in the city. Concentrations of OH-PAHs are 1–3 orders of magnitude less than their parent PAHs and comparable to those reported from other international cities. Source identification using diagnostic ratios of the organic tracers suggests that PAHs in Nanjing urban area are mainly derived from coal burning, whereas hopanes are more attributable to traffic emissions.

Heterogeneous reactions of organic aerosols with atmospheric oxidants are important processes that affect the hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activities of atmospheric aerosols. An electrodynamic balance (EDB) coupled with Raman spectroscopy is a particularly attractive platform for studying atmospheric reactions since it allows long-duration (days) particle levitation and reactions at atmospherically relevant low-oxidant concentrations can be investigated. In this study, we demonstrated the use of an EDB/Raman system to investigate the heterogeneous reactions of oleic acid particles with ozone (240-280ppb) under ambient temperatures (22-24'C) and dry conditions (relative humidity < 5\%) over a period of 20h. The Raman signatures of the ozone-processed oleic acid particles indicate the formation of oxidation products predominately consisting of peroxidic compounds (O-O groups of peroxides and/or ozonides), carbonyl (C=O) and hydroxyl (O-H) functional characteristics, which are consistent with the predictions of the Criegee mechanism as well as the results reported in the literature. We also confirmed that the Raman signatures of the reacted particles at atmospheric and much higher (> 10ppm) ozone concentrations are practically the same, which provides assurance to the use of elevated ozone concentrations in reaction studies of the oleic acid-ozone system in the literature. The ratio of the percentage of mass loss (due to evaporation of volatile organic products) to the percentage of oleic acid conversion was estimated to be 0.05.
