Background: Aerosols released during ultrasonic scaling can cause cross-contaminations. Infections like hepatitis and SARS-CoV-2 can spread through these aerosols. Preprocedural rinse is a cost-effective method to reduce aerosol contami-nation produced during ultrasonic scaling. Materials and Methods: This was a double-blinded randomised trial on 105 subjects diagnosed with chronic generalised periodontitis which was randomly allocated into three groups: Group I received 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), Group II received 5% Morinda citrifolia (noni) mouthrinse, Group III received distilled water. Participants were advised to mouthrinse for 60 seconds just before the start of ultrasonic scaling. The aerosols released during ultrasonic scaling were gathered on blood agar plates placed at three locations. Colony forming units (CFUs) were counted after 48 hours of incubation. Results: The highest CFU values were observed in the distilled water group and the lowest in chlorhexidine group (p<0.05). Patient chest area has the highest number of CFU than doctors’ and assistant chest area (p<0.05). Conclusions: Preprocedural rinsing with noni mouthwash can be used as an effective method of reducing aerosol contamination during ultrasonic scaling., Antecedentes: Los aerosoles liberados durante el raspado ultrasónico pueden provocar contaminaciones cruzadas. Infecciones como la hepatitis y el SARS-CoV-2 pueden propagarse a través de estos aerosoles. El enjuague previo al procedimiento es un método rentable para reducir la contaminación por aerosoles producida durante el raspado ultrasónico. Materiales y Métodos: Este fue un ensayo aleatorio doble ciego en 105 sujetos diagnosticados con periodontitis crónica generalizada que fueron asignados aleatoriamente en tres grupos: Grupo I: recibió clorhexidina (CHX) al 0,12%, Grupo II: recibió enjuague bucal de Morinda citrifolia (noni) al 5% ,Grupo III: recibió agua destilada. Se recomendó a los participantes que se enjuagaran la boca durante 60 segundos justo antes del inicio del raspado ultrasónico. Los aerosoles liberados durante el escalado ultrasónico se recolectaron en placas de agar sangre colocadas en tres lugares. Las unidades formadoras de colonias (UFC) se contaron después de 48 horas de incubación. Resultados: Se observaron valores de UFC más altos en el grupo de agua destilada y más bajos en el grupo de clorhexidina (p<0,05). El área del tórax del paciente tuvo el mayor número de UFC comparando con el área del tórax de los odontólogos y asistentes (p<0,05). Conclusión: El enjuague previo al procedimiento con enjuague bucal de noni se puede utilizar como un método eficaz para reducir la contaminación por aerosoles durante el raspado ultrasónico

Introduction: The level of knowledge regarding oral hygiene methods is a key factor in the oral health care of the population of any country. Objectives: To determine the level of knowledge on oral hygiene methods in adults in the "Cumbe" Parish, Cuenca, 2021. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted, with a qualitative, documentary, communicational, and current cross-sectional approach, through surveys, in the Parish, with a population of 5,546 inhabitants, of which through inclusion and exclusion criteria, in addition to the use of the sample calculation formula for a finite population, a sample of 400 individuals was finally established. Results: The high level of knowledge presented a frequency of 18.25%, the medium level obtained the highest frequency corresponding to 52.25% and the low level was 29.5%. Conclusions: The highest frequency was found in the medium level of knowledge about oral hygiene habits in adults in the "Cumbe" Parish, Cuenca, 2021., Introducción: El nivel de conocimiento de los métodos de higiene oral es un factor clave en el cuidado de la salud oral de la población de cualquier país. Objetivos: Determinar la frecuencia de conocimientos sobre métodos de higiene oral en adultos en la parroquia “Cumbe” Cuenca, 2021. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, con enfoque cualitativo, de tipo documental, comunicacional y transversal actual, mediante la realización de encuestas, en la parroquia Cumbe, con una población de 5.546 habitantes, de los cuales, mediante criterios de inclusión y exclusión, además del uso de la fórmula de cálculo de muestra para población finita, se estableció finalmente una muestra de 400 individuos. Resultados: El nivel de conocimiento alto presentó una frecuencia del 18,25%, el nivel medio obtuvo la frecuencia más alta correspondiente al 52,25% y el nivel bajo fue de 29,5%. Conclusiones: La mayor frecuencia se encontró en el nivel de conocimiento medio sobre los hábitos de higiene oral en adultos en la parroquia “Cumbe” Cuenca, 2021.

Office Based Anaesthesia Solutions is a private enterprise designed to be a high-quality general anaesthesia and sedation service delivering care across 18 dental practices in Victoria. We undertook a criterion-based audit of our practice standards and outcomes. Following ethics approval, we retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients managed by our service between March 2014 and July 2017. We collected demographic data, information about anaesthesia technique, and surgical features. We assessed our findings against the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) day surgery policy documents. During the specified period, we provided anaesthesia or sedation for 1,323 patients. Their ages ranged from two to 93 years (mean [standard deviation] 33.3 [18.6] years). Ninety-three percent of patients were American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification 1 or 2. Patient demographics were in line with ANZCA day surgical policy documents. Total intravenous anaesthesia was used in 1,054 of the 1,096 documented general anaesthesia cases. There were three unplanned hospital transfers (annual incidence 0.07%). As this was the first Australian criteria-based audit of office-based anaesthesia (OBA) for dental procedures, we cannot compare our findings directly to previous studies. However, we feel that our patient demographics fell within acceptable ANZCA day procedure standards and our adverse event rate was both very low and similar to other published international adverse event rates. Our audit indicates that with careful screening processes, patient selection and medical governance, OBA is a viable model of care for patients undergoing dental procedures.Copyright © 2018 Australian Society of Anaesthetists.

UVOD Početne karijesne lezije gleđi (bele mrlje) se definišu kao područija demineralizovane gleđi, koja nastaju kao posledica neadekvatnog higijensko-dijetetskog režima. Prevencija belih mrlja je neophodna, kako bi se dobio maksimalan učinak terapije fiksnim ortodontskim aparatima. U prevenciji i terapiji belih mrlja se primenjuju preparati na bazi kazein- fosfopeptid – amorfnog kalcijum fosfata (CPP-ACP) i preparati na bazi fluorida. Ciljevi istraživanja su bili da se ispita prisustvo početnih karijesnih lezija gleđi, nakon tretmana fiksnim ortodontskim aparatima i da se istraži uspešnost terapije početnih karijesnih lezija gleđi. MATERIJAL I METODE RADA U studiju je bilo uključeno 100 pacijenata, uzrasta od 15-50 godina, kod kojih je indikovana terapija fiksnim ortodontskim aparatima na Klinici za stomatologiju Vojvodine. Pacijenti su bili podeljeni u dve grupe, eksperimentalnu (pacijenti koji su koristili preparate na bazi kazein- fosfopeptid – amorfnog kalcijum fosfata i standardne preparate za oralnu higijenu) i kontrolnu (koji su koristili samo standardne preparate za oralnu higijenu). Analizirane su fotografije pacijenata napravljene pre početka tretmana, nakon uklanjanja fiksnih ortodontskih aparata i nakon terapije početnih karijesnih lezija. Formirana je baza podataka, koja je bila korišćena za potrebe ovog istraživanja, u okviru „Onyxceph“ softverskog programa. U istraživanju se koristio upitnik, sastavljen većinom od pitanja zatvorenog tipa. REZULTATI Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da je većina ispitanika bila ženskog pola (68%). Početne karijesne lezije su bile češće dijagnostikovane kod muškog pola. Najveći broj pacijenata je bio iz grupe mlađeg odraslog doba (42%) i adolescenata (32%). Pacijenti koji su više puta u toku dana konzumirali konditorske proizvode, u toku ortodontskog tretmana, su imali najviši pro, INTRODUCTION The initial carious lesions (white spots) indicate an area of demineralization of enamel as a result of an inadequate hygiene-dietary regime. The prevention of white spots lesions (WSL) is necessary in order to obtain the maximum effect of the therapy with fixed orthodontic appliances. In the prevention and treatment of white spots, products based on casein-phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) are applied as well as preparations based on fluoride. The aims of the study were to examine the presence of initial carious lesions on the surface of the tooth after treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances and to assess the success of the therapy of initial caries lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 100 patients aged 15-50 who were treated with fixed orthodontic appliances, at the public Dentistry Clinic of Vojvodina. Patients were divided into two groups: experimental (patients who used Tooth Mousse paste and standard oral hygiene products) and control group (using only standard oral hygiene products). The photos of patients were made and analyzed in three stages of the study - before the beginning of the treatment, after the removal of fixed orthodontic appliances and after the therapy of initial caries lesions. Using the "Onyxceph" software program, the database was created, which was used for the purposes of this research. The questionnaire composed mostly of close-ended questions was used for the purpose of this survey. RESULTS The restates of this study indicated that a majority of respondents were female. (68%). The initial carious lesions were more commonly diagnosed in men. The majority of patients with WSL were in group of young adult people (42%) and adolescents (32%). In 73% of all patients who were treated with fixed orthodontic appliances, were diagnosed WSL on the end of the orthodontic treatment. Regular dental recall intervals are widely recommended by dentists in the U.S. to prevent caries and improve periodontal health. However, there is some debate on whether or not compliance with six-month or more frequent recall intervals results in reduced incidence of dental caries. This study examines whether compliance with regular recall and receipt of cleanings, exams and patient education reduces rates of new decay in underserved children and finds a positive impact.

Aim To evaluate the clinical treatment effects of a glycine powder air-polishing or ultrasonic device on peri-implant mucositis. Materials and methods Thirty-seven patients with one implant diagnosed with peri-implant mucositis (probing depth ≥4 mm (0.2N) and bleeding on probing (BOP) (primary outcome)) were randomly assigned to treatment with either glycine powder air-polishing (GPAP) or ultrasonic (US) debridement. Treatment was performed at baseline and at 3 and 6 months. Professional supra gingival cleaning was performed at 9 and 12 months. Oral hygiene instructions were reinforced at each visit. Results At 12 months there was a statistically significant reduction in mean plaque score, bleeding on probing and number of periodontal pockets ≥4 mm within the treatment groups compared to baseline. The percentages of diseased sites were significantly reduced for both groups. Conclusions Treatment with a glycine powder air-polishing or an ultrasonic device is effective in non-surgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological effects and the surface irregularities produced by different methods of mechanical stripping (abrasive strips and burs) and chemical stripping (37% orthophosphoric acid) and the surface changes following the finishing procedures (polishing strips) or the subsequent application of sealants, in order to establish the right stripping method that can guarantee the smoothest surface. We have also analysed the level of wear on the different abrasive strips employed, according to their structure. Materials and methods: 160 proximal surfaces of 80 sound molar teeth extracted for orthodontic and periodontal reasons, were divided into: 1 control group with non-treated enamel proximal surfaces and 5 different groups according to the stripping method used, were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Each one of the 5 treated groups was also divided into 3 different subgroups according to the finishing procedures or the subsequent application of sealants. Results: The finishing stage following the manual reduction proves to be fundamental in reducing the number and depth of grooves created by the stripping. After the air rotor stripping method, the use of sealants is advised in order to obtain a smoother surface. The analysis of the combinations of mechanical and chemical stripping showed unsatisfactory results. Concerning the wear of the strips, we have highlighted a different abrasion degree for the different types of strips analysed with SEM. Conclusions: The enamel damages are limited only if the finishing procedure is applied, independently of the type of abrasive strip employed. It would be advisable, though clinically seldom possible, the use of sealants after the air rotor stripping technique. Thirty patients (19 men and 11 women) were provided with a removable partial denture (RPD) and assigned randomly to two groups: 15 patients were called back twice a year for plaque control, reinforcement of instructions, denture hygiene control and professional prophylaxis; the other 15 were not called back. The 30 patients were examined after 2-3 weeks following the end of the prosthetic treatment, after 1 and 2 years. At each examination, the following parameters were recorded [gingival inflammation, plaque index (Pl I), tooth mobility, attachment level, pocket depth] and a bacteriological examination of subgingival plaque was carried out. Few differences appeared between the two groups; the values observed show a relatively low level of hygiene and but little motivation with regard to prophylaxis techniques.

A plethora of preventive measures exists in the dental profession's armamentarium to minimize the incidence of dental caries. Although water fluoridation has been the most effective community measure available over the past fifty years, other individual methods include the use of pit and fissure sealants, topical application of fluorides, oral hygiene counseling, diet planning and dental prophylaxis. Are these procedures employed at different rates relative to the presence or absence of fluoride in the community water supply? This study was undertaken to answer this question in the United States Air Force. Utilization rates for seven preventive procedures, namely application of pit and fissure sealants, topical fluoride application, diet planning, fluoride carriers/mouth protectors, oral hygiene instructions, oral hygiene/soft tissue indices, and adult prophylaxis were calculated during 1995- 1997 for 20 selected Air Force installations.

The aim of this clinical study was to compare the treatment outcome following root surface conditioning using an EDTA gel preparation in conjunction with surgical therapy with that following conventional flap surgery in periodontal intraosseous defects. 36 patients, each of them contributing one intraosseous defect ≥4 mm in depth participated. Defect sites had a probing pocket depth ≥5 mm and bled on probing following hygienic treatment phase. No furcation involvement or endodontic complications were present. In the EDTA group, 18 consecutive patients, defects were treated by root conditioning with EDTA gel for 3 minutes in combination with surgical therapy. In the control group, 18 patients, conventional flap surgery was performed without root conditioning. Chlorhexidine rinsings 0.2% were prescribed following surgery for 2-3 weeks with modified oral hygiene instruction. A strict recall program was implemented including professional prophylaxis and oral hygiene reinforcement every 4-6 weeks until 6-month re-evaluation. Baseline probing pocket depths and defect depths of 7.1±1.3 mm and 6.9±1.6 mm in the EDTA group and 7.6±1.9 mm and 6.6±1.7 mm, respectively, in the control group were measured. 6-month clinical results showed a significant probing attachment level gain of 1.8±1.5 mm and 1.0±1.7 mm in the EDTA and control groups respectively. A probing bone gain of 1.0±1.3 mm in the EDTA group was measured with a non-significant gain of 0.4±1.2 mm in the control group. Radiographic analysis confirmed these results. There were no statistically significant differences in treatment outcome between the group treated by root conditioning in combination with flap surgery and conventional flap surgery alone.

The aim of the study was to describe the 3-yr results of a treatment program designed to control occlusal caries on the basis of intensive patient education and professional toothcleaning. The sample consisted of 56 children 6-8 yr old with their permanent right first molars in different stages of eruption. The results were compared with record data from 58 children of the same age who had received a traditional caries treatment program including fissure sealing (control group). After 1 yr a significant reduction of occlusal surfaces with visible plaque was noted in the study group as well as an increased proportion of arrested lesions. These results were maintained after 2 and 3 yr. Ten (9%) teeth were sealed and one filled during the study period. Examination of record data in the control group over a 3-yr period revealed that 76 (65%) first molars were sealed and 7 (6%) were filled. During the first year 1/3 of the children in the study group needed 5-6 recall visits, whereas in the following period all children were only seen 1-4 times. In contrast, 50% of the children in the control group needed 5-6 recalls in the 3rd yr. Our data indicate that professional care for erupting teeth on an individual basis has a long-term effect on occlusal surfaces as well. The alternative technique required less clinical time than the traditional application of sealants.

The aim of this study was to evaluate a treatment program designed to control occlusal caries on the basis of intensive patient education and professional toothcleaning. The sample consisted of 56 6-8-yr-old children with their permanent right first molars in different stages of eruption. Data from the program were compared with previous data recorded in a similar sample of children. After 1 yr the majority of children in the study group had their permanent right first molars in full occlusion. A significant decrease of surfaces with easily detectable plaque and an increase of surfaces without plaque was observed. The proportion of arrested lesions increased and active enamel lesions decreased. Fissure sealing was only needed in two teeth in contrast to more than 2/3 of molars in a comparable sample of children. The program proved to be an efficient alternative to fissure sealing in preventing occlusal caries in erupting teeth.
