In the context of charge-coupled devices (CCDs), the ultraviolet (UV) region has mostly remained unexplored after the 1990s. Gaia DR3 offers the community a unique opportunity to explore tens of thousands of asteroids in the near-UV as a proxy of the UV absorption. This absorption has been proposed in previous works as a diagnostic of hydration, organics, and space weathering. Aims. In this work, we aim to explore the potential of the NUV as a diagnostic region for primitive asteroids using Gaia DR3. We used a corrective factor over the blue part of Gaia spectra to erase the solar analog selection effect. We identified an artificial relation between the band noise and slope and applied a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) threshold for Gaia bands. Meeting the quality standards, we employed a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to compute the albedo threshold, maximizing primitive asteroid inclusion. Utilizing one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) projections, along with dimensionality-reduction methods (such as PCA and UMAP), we identified primitive asteroid populations. We uncovered: (a) the first observational evidence linking UV absorption to the 0.7 {\mu}m band, tied to hydrated iron-rich phyllosilicates; and (b) a 2D space revealing a split in C-type asteroids based on spectral features, including UV absorption. The computed average depth (3.5 +- 1.0 %) and center (0.70 +- 0.03 {\mu}m) of the 0.7 {\mu}m absorption band for primitive asteroids observed with Gaia is in agreement with the literature values. In this paper, we shed light on the importance of the UV absorption feature to discriminate among different mineralogies (i.e., iron-rich phyllosilicates vs. iron-poor) or to identify taxonomies that are conflated in the visible (i.e., F-types vs. B-types). We report the characterization of two planet candidates detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), TOI-1199 b and TOI-1273 b, with periods of 3.7 and 4.6 days, respectively. Follow-up observations for both targets, which include several ground-based light curves, confirmed the transit events. High-precision radial velocities from the SOPHIE spectrograph revealed signals at the expected frequencies and phases of the transiting candidates and allowed mass determinations with a precision of $8.4\%$ and $6.7\%$ for TOI-1199 b and TOI-1273 b, respectively. The planetary and orbital parameters were derived from a joint analysis of the radial velocities and photometric data. We find that the planets have masses of $0.239\,\pm\,0.020\,M_{\mathrm{J}}$ and $0.222\,\pm\,0.015\,M_{\mathrm{J}}$ and radii of $0.938\,\pm\,0.025\,R_{\mathrm{J}}$ and $0.99\,\pm\,0.22\,R_{\mathrm{J}}$, respectively. The grazing transit of TOI-1273 b translates to a larger uncertainty in its radius, and hence also in its bulk density, compared to TOI-1199 b. The inferred bulk densities of $0.358\,\pm\,0.041\,\mathrm{g}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and $0.28\,\pm\,0.11\,\mathrm{g}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ are among the lowest known for exoplanets in this mass range, which, considering the brightness of the host stars ($V \approx 11\,\mathrm{mag}$), render them particularly amenable to atmospheric characterization via the transit spectroscopy technique. The better constraints on the parameters of TOI-1199 b provide a transmission spectroscopy metric of $134\,\pm\,17$, making it the better suited of the two planets for atmospheric studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 20 pages, 7 tables, and 15 figures

We report the discovery, mass, and radius determination of TOI-1801 b, a temperate mini-Neptune around a young M dwarf. TOI-1801 b was observed in TESS sectors 22 and 49, and the alert that this was a TESS planet candidate with a period of 21.3 days went out in April 2020. However, ground-based follow-up observations, including seeing-limited photometry in and outside transit together with precise radial velocity (RV) measurements with CARMENES and HIRES revealed that the true period of the planet is 10.6 days. These observations also allowed us to retrieve a mass of 5.74 $\pm$ 1.46 $M_\oplus$, which together with a radius of 2.08 $\pm$ 0.12 $R_\oplus$, means that TOI-1801 b is most probably composed of water and rock, with an upper limit of 2\% by mass of H$_{2}$ in its atmosphere. The stellar rotation period of 16 days is readily detectable in our RV time series and in the ground-based photometry. We derived a likely age of 600--800 Myr for the parent star TOI-1801, which means that TOI-1801 b is the least massive young mini-Neptune with precise mass and radius determinations. Our results suggest that if TOI-1801 b had a larger atmosphere in the past, it must have been removed by some evolutionary mechanism on timescales shorter than 1 Gyr., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 29 pages, 21 figures

Context. The Arjuna asteroid belt is loosely defined as a diverse group of small asteroids that follow dynamically cold, Earth-like orbits. Most of them are not actively engaged in resonant, co-orbital behavior with Earth. Some of them experience temporary but recurrent horseshoe episodes. Objects in horseshoe paths tend to approach Earth at a low velocity, leading to captures as Earth's temporary satellites or mini-moons. Four such objects have already been identified: 1991 VG, 2006 RH120, 2020 CD3, and 2022 NX1. Here, we focus on 2023 FY3, a recent finding, the trajectory of which might have a co-orbital status and perhaps lead to temporary captures. Aims. We want to determine the physical properties of 2023 FY3 and explore its dynamical evolution. Methods. We carried out an observational study of 2023 FY3 using the OSIRIS camera spectrograph at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias, to derive its spectral class, and time-series photometry obtained with QHY411M cameras and two units of the Two-meter Twin Telescope to investigate its rotational state. N-body simulations were also performed to examine its possible resonant behavior. Results. The visible reflectance spectrum of 2023 FY3 is consistent with that of an S-type asteroid; its light curve gives a rotation period of 9.3$\pm$0.6 min, with an amplitude of 0.48$\pm$0.13 mag. We confirm that 2023 FY3 roams the edge of Earth's co-orbital space. Conclusions. Arjuna 2023 FY3, an S-type asteroid and fast rotator, currently exhibits horseshoe-like resonant behavior and in the past experienced mini-moon engagements of the temporarily captured flyby type that may repeat in the future. Proximity observations of (162173) Ryugu by the telescopic Optical Navigation Camera onboard Hayabusa2 and (101955) Bennu by MapCam onboard Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer found opposite spectral trends of space weathering on these carbonaceous asteroids. Whether the space weathering trends on these asteroids evolved from the same starting spectra would place an important constraint for understanding their relation. However, systematic error between data obtained by the two imagers needed to be reduced for accurate comparison. To resolve this problem, we cross calibrated albedo and color data using the Moon as the common standard. We show that the cross-calibrated reflectance can be obtained by upscaling the pre-cross-calibrated reflectance of Bennu by 12 +/- 2% at v-band, reducing the systematic errors down to 2%. The cross-calibrated data show that Bennu is brighter by 16 +/- 2% at v-band and bluer in spectral slope by 0.19 +/- 0.05 (/um) than Ryugu. The spectra of fresh craters on Ryugu and Bennu before cross calibration appeared to follow two parallel trend lines with offset, but they converged to a single trend after cross calibration. Such a post-cross-calibration perspective raise the possibility that Ryugu and Bennu evolved from materials with similar visible spectra but evolved in diverging directions by space weathering. The divergent evolution can be caused by the difference in space weathering dose/process and/or composition of the starting material. Thus, comparing the composition of samples returned from Ryugu and Bennu may change the way we interpret the spectral variation of C-complex asteroids.

The NASA Lucy mission is aimed at the study of the very interesting population of Jupiter Trojans, considered as time capsules from the origin of our solar system. During its journey, the mission will pass near a main belt asteroid, Donaldjohanson. Recently, NASA has announced that a new asteroid in the belt will also be visited by Lucy: 152830 Dinkinesh (1999 VD57). The main goal of this work is to characterise this newly selected target, asteroid Dinkinesh, in order to provide critical information to the mission team. To achieve it, we have obtained visible spectra, colour photometry, and time-series photometry of Dinkinesh, using several telescopes located at different observatories. For the spectra we used the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), in the island of La Palma (Spain); for the colour photometry the 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT), near Happy Jack, Arizona (USA) was used; and for the time-series photometry we used the 82cm IAC80 telescope located in the island of Tenerife (Spain). Both visible spectrum and reflectance values computed from colour photometry show that Dinkinesh is an S-type asteroid, i.e., it is composed mainly of silicates and some metal. According to observations done by the NEOWISE survey, S-type asteroids have typical geometric albedo of $p_V$ = 0.223 $\pm$ 0.073. From our time-series photometry, we obtained an asteroid mean magnitude $r'$ = 19.99 $\pm$ 0.05, which provides an absolute magnitude $H_{r'}$ = 17.53 $\pm$ 0.07 assuming $G$ = 0.19 $\pm$ 0.25 for S-types. Using our colour-photometry, we transformed $H_{r'}$ to $H_V$ = 17.48 $\pm$ 0.05. This value of absolute magnitude combined with the geometric albedo provides a mean diameter for Dinkinesh of $\sim$900 m, ranging between a minimum size of 542 m and a maximum size of 1309 m., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Context. Asteroid families are witnesses to the intense collisional evolution that occurred on the asteroid belt. The study of the physical properties of family members can provide important information about the state of differentiation of the parent body and provide insights into how these objects were formed. Several of these asteroid families identified across the main belt are dominated by low-albedo, primitive asteroids. These objects are important for the study of Solar System formation because they were subject to weaker thermophysical processing and provide information about the early conditions of our planetary system. Aims. We aim to study the diversity of physical properties among the Themis, Hygiea, Ursula, Veritas, and Lixiaohua families. Methods. We present new spectroscopic data, combined with a comprehensive analysis using a variety of data available in the literature, such as albedo and rotational properties. Results. Our results show that Themis and Hygiea families, the largest families in the region, present similar levels of hydration. Ursula and Lixiaohua families are redder in comparison to the others and present no sign of hydrated members based on the analysis of visible spectra. Conversely, Veritas presents the highest fraction of hydrated members. Conclusions. This work demonstrates a diverse scenario in terms of the physical properties of primitive outer-belt families, which could be associated with dynamical mixing of asteroid populations and the level of differentiation of the parental body.

Relevant information about physical properties of the surface of airless bodies such as porosity, particle size, or roughness can be inferred knowing the dependence of the brightness with illumination and observing geometry. Additionally, this knowledge is necessary to standardize or photometrically correct data acquired under different illumination conditions. In this work we develop a robust, automatic, and efficient photometric modeling methodology which is tested and validated using Bennu images acquired by the camera MapCam from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. It consists of a supervised machine learning algorithm through an artificial neural network. Our system provides a more precise modeling for all color filters than the previous procedures which are already published, offering an improvement over this classic approach of up to 14.30%, as well as a considerable reduction in computing time.

Context. The existence of comets with heliocentric orbital periods close to that of Jupiter (i.e., co-orbitals) has been known for some time. Comet 295P/LINEAR (2002 AR2) is a well-known quasi-satellite of Jupiter. However, their orbits are not long-term stable, and they may eventually experience flybys with Jupiter at very close range, close enough to trigger tidal disruptions like the one suffered by comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1992. Aims. Our aim was to study the observed activity and the dynamical evolution of the Jupiter transient co-orbital comet P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) and its dynamical evolution. Methods. We present results of an observational study of P/2019 LD2 carried out with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) that includes image analyses using a Monte Carlo dust tail fitting code to characterize its level of cometary activity, and spectroscopic studies to search for gas emission. We also present N-body simulations to explore its past, present, and future orbital evolution. Results. Images of P/2019 LD2 obtained on May 16, 2020, show a conspicuous coma and tail, but the spectrum obtained on May 17, 2020, does not exhibit any evidence of CN, C2, or C3 emission. The comet brightness in a 2.6′′ aperture diameter is r′ = 19.34 ± 0.02 mag, with colors (g′- r′) = 0.78 ± 0.03, (r′- i′) = 0.31 ± 0.03, and (i′- z′) = 0.26 ± 0.03. The temporal dependence of the dust loss rate of P/2019 LD2 can be parameterized by a Gaussian function having a full width at half maximum of 350 days, with a maximum dust mass loss rate of 60 kg s-1 reached on August 15, 2019. The total dust loss rate from the beginning of activity until the GTC observation date (May 16, 2020) is estimated at 1.9 × 109 kg. Comet P/2019 LD2 is now an ephemeral co-orbital of Jupiter, following what looks like a short arc of a quasi-satellite cycle that started in 2017 and will end in 2028. In this work, we present the results of an observational study of 2I/Borisov carried out with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the 3.6-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), both telescopes located at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, in the island of La Palma (Spain). The study includes images in the visible and near-infrared, as well as visible spectra in the 3600 - 9200 A wavelength range. N-body simulations were also performed to explore its orbital evolution and Galactic kinematic context. The comet's dust continuum and near-infrared colours are compatible with those observed for Solar system comets. From its visible spectrum on the nights of 2019, September 24 and 26 we measured CN gas production rates Q(CN) = (2.3 +- 0.4) x 10^{24} mol/s and Q(CN) = (9.5 +- 0.2) x 10^{24} mol/s, respectively, in agreement with measurements reported by other authors on similar nights. We also obtained an upper limit for the C2 production rate of Q(C2) < (4.5 +- 0.1) x 10^{24} mol/s. Dust modelling results indicate a moderate dust production rate of about 50 kg/s at heliocentric distance r_h=2.6 au, with a differential power-law dust size distribution of index -3.4, within the range reported for many comet comae. Our simulations show that the Galactic velocity of 2I/Borisov matches well that of known stars in the solar neighbourhood and also those of more distant regions of the Galactic disc., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The first known asteroid with the orbit inside that of Venus is 2020~AV$_{2}$. This may be the largest member of a new population of small bodies with the aphelion smaller than 0.718~au, called Vatiras. The surface of 2020~AV$_{2}$ is being constantly modified by the high temperature, by the strong solar wind irradiation that characterizes the innermost region of the Solar system, and by high-energy micrometeorite impacts. The study of its physical properties represents an extreme test-case for the science of near-Earth asteroids. Here, we report spectroscopic observations of 2020~AV$_{2}$ in the 0.5-1.5~$\mu m$ wavelength interval. These were performed with the Nordic Optical Telescope and the William Herschel Telescope. Based on the obtained spectra, we classify 2020~AV$_{2}$ as a Sa-type asteroid. We estimate the diameter of this Vatira to be $1.50_{-0.65}^{+1.10}$ km by considering the average albedo of A-type and S-complex asteroids ($p_V=0.23_{-0.08}^{+0.11}$), and the absolute magnitude (H=$16.40\pm0.78$ mag). The wide spectral band around 1~$\mu m$ shows the signature of an olivine rich composition. The estimated band centre $BIC = 1.08 \pm 0.02~\mu m$ corresponds to a ferroan olivine mineralogy similar to that of brachinite meteorites., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 5 figures

We present the discovery and characterisation of two transiting planets observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) orbiting the nearby (d ~ 22 pc), bright (J ~ 9 mag) M3.5 dwarf LTT 3780 (TOI-732). We confirm both planets and their association with LTT 3780 via ground-based photometry and determine their masses using precise radial velocities measured with the CARMENES spectrograph. Precise stellar parameters determined from CARMENES high resolution spectra confirm that LTT 3780 is a mid-M dwarf with an effective temperature of T_eff = 3360 +\- 51 K, a surface gravity of log(g) = 4.81 +/- 0.04 (cgs), and an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = 0.09 +/- 0.16 dex, with an inferred mass of M_star = 0.379 +/- 0.016 M_sun and a radius of R_star = 0.382 +/- 0.012 R_sun. The ultra-short-period planet LTT 3780 b (P_b = 0.77 d) with a radius of 1.35^{+0.06}_{-0.06} R_earth, a mass of 2.34^{+0.24}_{-0.23} M_earth, and a bulk density of 5.24^{+0.94}_{-0.81} g cm^{-3} joins the population of Earth-size planets with rocky, terrestrial composition. The outer planet, LTT 3780 c, with an orbital period of 12.25 d, radius of 2.42^{+0.10}_{-0.10} R_earth, mass of 6.29^{+0.63}_{-0.61} M_earth, and mean density of 2.45^{+0.44}_{-0.37} g cm^{-3} belongs to the population of dense sub-Neptunes. With the two planets located on opposite sides of the radius gap, this planetary system is an excellent target for testing planetary formation, evolution and atmospheric models. Although not yet well understood in origin and composition, they have surface properties that, besides being comparable with other populations of small bodies in the Solar System, hold information that may restrict models of planetary formation. Because of this, there has been a significant increase in the interest in studying this population. In this context arises the NASA Mission Lucy, with a planned launch in 2021. The Lucy Mission will be the first one to address a group of six objects (five Jupiter Trojans and one main belt asteroid) with the aim of investigating, in detail, their nature. In order to provide valuable information for mission planning and maximize the scientific return, we carried out ground based observations of four targets of the mission. Aimed at looking for variabilities on the spectra of (3548) Eurybates, (15094) Polymele and (21900) Orus, we performed rotationally resolved visible spectroscopy of them at SOAR Telescope. We also analyzed the first visible spectrum obtained for the main belt asteroid (52246) Donaldjohanson at Gran Telescopio Canarias. The spectra of (21900) Orus and (15094) Polymele present here are the first ones in the visible range and show rather homogeneous characteristics along the surfaces. Their taxa correspond with those of the two dominant Trojan populations, the P- and the D-type group of objects. Spectroscopy of (3548) Eurybates, on the other side, suggests that some variation on the characteristics of the reflectance of this body. Donaldjohanson shows hints of hydrated materials in its visible spectrum. The Lucy mission will investigate the surface composition of these targets and will shed light on their connections with other populations of minor bodies and on their role in the evolution of the Solar System. ©2020

The first known asteroid with the orbit inside that of Venus is 2020~AV$_{2}$. This may be the largest member of a new population of small bodies with the aphelion smaller than 0.718~au, called Vatiras. The surface of 2020~AV$_{2}$ is being constantly modified by the high temperature, by the strong solar wind irradiation that characterizes the innermost region of the Solar system, and by high-energy micrometeorite impacts. The study of its physical properties represents an extreme test-case for the science of near-Earth asteroids. Here, we report spectroscopic observations of 2020~AV$_{2}$ in the 0.5-1.5~$\mu m$ wavelength interval. These were performed with the Nordic Optical Telescope and the William Herschel Telescope. Based on the obtained spectra, we classify 2020~AV$_{2}$ as a Sa-type asteroid. We estimate the diameter of this Vatira to be $1.50_{-0.65}^{+1.10}$ km by considering the average albedo of A-type and S-complex asteroids ($p_V=0.23_{-0.08}^{+0.11}$), and the absolute magnitude (H=$16.40\pm0.78$ mag). The wide spectral band around 1~$\mu m$ shows the signature of an olivine rich composition. In this work, we present the results of an observational study of 2I/Borisov carried out with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the 3.6-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), both telescopes located at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, in the island of La Palma (Spain). The study includes images in the visible and near-infrared, as well as visible spectra in the 3600 - 9200 A wavelength range. N-body simulations were also performed to explore its orbital evolution and Galactic kinematic context. The comet's dust continuum and near-infrared colours are compatible with those observed for Solar system comets. From its visible spectrum on the nights of 2019, September 24 and 26 we measured CN gas production rates Q(CN) = (2.3 +- 0.4) x 10^{24} mol/s and Q(CN) = (9.5 +- 0.2) x 10^{24} mol/s, respectively, in agreement with measurements reported by other authors on similar nights. We also obtained an upper limit for the C2 production rate of Q(C2) < (4.5 +- 0.1) x 10^{24} mol/s. Dust modelling results indicate a moderate dust production rate of about 50 kg/s at heliocentric distance r_h=2.6 au, with a differential power-law dust size distribution of index -3.4, within the range reported for many comet comae. Our simulations show that the Galactic velocity of 2I/Borisov matches well that of known stars in the solar neighbourhood and also those of more distant regions of the Galactic disc., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We present the discovery and characterisation of two transiting planets observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) orbiting the nearby (d ~ 22 pc), bright (J ~ 9 mag) M3.5 dwarf LTT 3780 (TOI-732). We confirm both planets and their association with LTT 3780 via ground-based photometry and determine their masses using precise radial velocities measured with the CARMENES spectrograph. Precise stellar parameters determined from CARMENES high resolution spectra confirm that LTT 3780 is a mid-M dwarf with an effective temperature of T_eff = 3360 +\- 51 K, a surface gravity of log(g) = 4.81 +/- 0.04 (cgs), and an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = 0.09 +/- 0.16 dex, with an inferred mass of M_star = 0.379 +/- 0.016 M_sun and a radius of R_star = 0.382 +/- 0.012 R_sun. Context. We report the discovery of TOI 263.01 (TIC 120916706), a transiting substellar object (R = 0.87 RJup) orbiting a faint M3.5 V dwarf (V = 18.97) on a 0.56 d orbit. Aims. We setout to determine the nature of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) planet candidate TOI 263.01 using ground-based multicolour transit photometry. The host star is faint, which makes radial-velocity confirmation challenging, but the large transit depth makes the candidate suitable for validation through multicolour photometry. Methods. Our analysis combines three transits observed simultaneously in r′, i′, and zs bands usingthe MuSCAT2 multicolour imager, three LCOGT-observed transit light curves in g′, r′, and i′ bands, a TESS light curve from Sector 3, and a low-resolution spectrum for stellar characterisation observed with the ALFOSC spectrograph. We modelled the light curves with PYTRANSIT using a transit model that includes a physics-based light contamination component, allowing us to estimate the contamination from unresolved sources from the multicolour photometry. Using this information we were able to derive the true planet-star radius ratio marginalised over the contamination allowed by the photometry.Combining this with the stellar radius, we were able to make a reliable estimate of the absolute radius of the object. Results. The ground-based photometry strongly excludes contamination from unresolved sources with a significant colour difference to TOI 263. Furthermore, contamination from sources of the same stellar type as the host is constrained to levels where the true radius ratio posterior has a median of 0.217 and a 99 percentile of0.286. The median and maximum radius ratios correspond to absolute planet radii of 0.87 and 1.41 RJup, respectively,which confirms the substellar nature of the planet candidate. The population of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) shows a large variety of objects in terms of physical and dynamical properties. They are subject to planetary encounters and to strong solar wind and radiation effects. Their study is also motivated by practical reasons regarding space exploration and long-term probability of impact with the Earth. We aim to spectrally characterize a significant sample of NEAs with sizes in the range of $\sim$0.25 - 5.5 km (categorized as large), and search for connections between their spectral types and the orbital parameters. Optical spectra of NEAs were obtained using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) equipped with the IDS spectrograph. These observations are analyzed using taxonomic classification and by comparison with laboratory spectra of meteorites. A total number of 76 NEAs were observed. We classified 44 of them as Q/S-complex, 16 as B/C-complex, eight as V-types, and another eight belong to the remaining taxonomic classes. Our sample contains 27 asteroids categorized as potentially hazardous and 31 possible targets for space missions including (459872) 2014 EK24, (436724) 2011 UW158, and (67367) 2000 LY27. The spectral data corresponding to (276049) 2002 CE26 and (385186) 1994 AW1 shows the 0.7 $\mu$m feature which indicates the presence of hydrated minerals on their surface. We report that Q-types have the lowest perihelia (a median value and absolute deviation of $0.797\pm0.244$ AU) and are systematically larger than the S-type asteroids observed in our sample. We explain these observational evidences by thermal fatigue fragmentation as the main process for the rejuvenation of NEA surfaces. In general terms, the taxonomic distribution of our sample is similar to the previous studies and matches the broad groups of the inner main belt asteroids. We analyze the effect of the average kinetic energy of Zn ions on the crystalline orientation and quality, along with its effect on the optical response of ZnO thin films deposited by reactive pulsed laser deposition. With the use of laser attenuators, the Zn plasma density was kept constant while the mean kinetic ion energy was varied from 40 to 100 eV. The results show that the films are polycrystalline with a preferential orientation along the [101] direction. As the mean kinetic energy of the ions in the plasma is increased, the degree of crystallinity decreased. The preferred orientation was found to be a plasma-related effect. As deposited films show high transmittance in the visible range and an intense UV photoluminescence emission, which is associated to the excitonic recombination.

The Cybele and Hilda dynamical groups delimit the outer edge of the asteroid belt. Their compositional distribution is a key element to constrain evolutionary models of the Solar System. In this paper, we present a compositional analysis of these populations using spectroscopic observations, SDSS and NEOWISE data. As part of the PRIMASS (Primitive Asteroids Spectroscopic Survey), we acquired visible spectra of 18 objects in Hilda or Cybele groups with the Goodman High Throughput Spectrometer at the 4.1m SOAR telescope and 20 near-IR spectra of Hilda objects with Near Infrared Camera Spectrograph at the 3.56m TNG. The sample is enlarged with spectra taken from the literature in order to increase our statistical analysis. The spectra were inspected for aqueous alteration bands and other spectral features that can be linked to compositional constraints. The analysis shows a continuous distribution of compositions from the main-belt to the Cybele, Hilda and Trojan regions. We also identify a population in the Trojans group not present in Hilda or Cybele objects., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

Telescopes across the globe (and in space) followed comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from before Rosetta's arrival until nearly the end of mission in September 2016. These provided essential data for mission planning, large-scale context information for the coma and tails beyond the spacecraft, and a way to directly compare 67P with other comets. The observations revealed 67P to be a relatively `well behaved' comet, typical of Jupiter family comets and with activity patterns that repeat from orbit-to-orbit. Comparison between this large collection of telescopic observations and the in situ results from Rosetta will allow us to better understand comet coma chemistry and structure. The existence of significant anisotropies in the distributions of the directions of perihelia and orbital poles of the known extreme trans-Neptunian objects (ETNOs) has been used to claim that trans-Plutonian planets may exist. Among the known ETNOs, the pair (474640) 2004 VN112-2013 RF98 stands out. Their orbital poles and the directions of their perihelia and their velocities at perihelion/aphelion are separated by a few degrees, but orbital similarity does not necessarily imply common physical origin. In an attempt to unravel their physical nature, visible spectroscopy of both targets was obtained using the OSIRIS camera-spectrograph at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). From the spectral analysis, we find that 474640-2013 RF98 have similar spectral slopes (12 vs. 15 %/0.1um), very different from Sedna's but compatible with those of (148209) 2000 CR105 and 2012 VP113. These five ETNOs belong to the group of seven linked to the Planet Nine hypothesis. A dynamical pathway consistent with these findings is dissociation of a binary asteroid during a close encounter with a planet and we confirm its plausibility using N-body simulations. We thus conclude that both the dynamical and spectroscopic properties of 474640-2013 RF98 favour a genetic link and their current orbits suggest that the pair was kicked by a perturber near aphelion., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1+3 tables. The existence of significant anisotropies in the distributions of the directions of perihelia and orbital poles of the known extreme trans-Neptunian objects (ETNOs) has been used to claim that trans-Plutonian planets may exist. Among the known ETNOs, the pair (474640) 2004 VN112-2013 RF98 stands out. Their orbital poles and the directions of their perihelia and their velocities at perihelion/aphelion are separated by a few degrees, but orbital similarity does not necessarily imply common physical origin. In an attempt to unravel their physical nature, visible spectroscopy of both targets was obtained using the OSIRIS camera-spectrograph at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). From the spectral analysis, we find that 474640-2013 RF98 have similar spectral slopes (12 vs. 15 %/0.1um), very different from Sedna's but compatible with those of (148209) 2000 CR105 and 2012 VP113. These five ETNOs belong to the group of seven linked to the Planet Nine hypothesis. A dynamical pathway consistent with these findings is dissociation of a binary asteroid during a close encounter with a planet and we confirm its plausibility using N-body simulations. We thus conclude that both the dynamical and spectroscopic properties of 474640-2013 RF98 favour a genetic link and their current orbits suggest that the pair was kicked by a perturber near aphelion., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1+3 tables. [EN] The effect of the support (Al-HMS) modification with P between (0.0-2.0 wt.%) was studied in this work. NiMo/Al-HMS-P(x) catalysts were prepared and sulfided in order to be tested in the hydrodesulfurizarion (HDS) reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT), hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of carbazole and simultaneous HDS and HDN reactions. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR of framework vibration (FTIR-KBr), Micro-Raman spectroscopy, temperature programmed adsorption of ammonia (TPD-NH3), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For both, individual HDS and HDN reactions, all P-containing catalysts have shown a higher activity with respect to P-free sample. The catalyst modified with optimized amount of P (1 wt.%) promoted DBT transformation via HYD route of this reaction. Due to the important HYD properties, the NiMo/Al-HMS-P1.0 sample showed the lower inhibition factor during simultaneous HDS and HDN.

This work reports on the structure and surface characteristics of hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) modified with both Ti and Ga. Several techniques were used (low-angle XRD, SBET, TPD-NH3, DRS, FT-IR of framework vibration, FT-IR of adsorbed pyridine, SEM and HRTEM). These systems were then used as catalysts in the o-xylene hydroisomerization carried out in a batch reactor at 300 °C and atmospheric H2 pressure. The catalyst characterization demonstrated that the modification of Ti-HMS substrate with Ga by post-synthesis grafting yields high surface area substrates with good Ga dispersion and bimodal distribution of gallium species. On the basis of lattice expansion observed from XRD data together with the increase of absorption band due to vibration of Si–O–Ga linkages, it is inferred that Ga species are incorporated into the silica framework. Moreover, textural analysis revealed that highly dispersed Ga2O3 species are deposited within the inner pores of the substrate. The largest o-xylene conversion observed for the Ti-HMS-2.5Ga sample containing the largest Ga loading is related to the heterogeneous distribution of its Ga species and its large acidity. Upon reaction conditions employed, the o-xylene hydroisomerization over Ti-HMS-Ga proceeds exclusively via intramolecular mechanism (formation of m- and p-xylenes) and hydrogenation of benzene aromatic ring of o-, p- and m-xylenes did not occur.

This contribution describes the effect of HMS-Ti substrate decoration with variable amounts of Ga2O3 on the catalytic response of bifunctional Ga2O3/HMS-Ti catalysts in the hydroisomerization of ortho-xylene carried out in a batch reactor at 300 °C. The effect of hydrogen pressure (5, 10 and 40 bar) was investigated. The synthetized Ga2O3/HMS-Ti samples were characterized by variety of techniques: HRTEM, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, FTIR in the –OH region, TPR and XPS. The catalyst activity showed a volcano-type curve being the catalyst with Ga loading of 1.1 wt.% the most active among the catalysts studied. Both FT-IR spectra of adsorbed pyridine and HRTEM images indicated that this behavior is linked to its high Brønsted and Lewis acidities and presence of small Ga2O3 particles homogeneously dispersed on the support surface. All catalysts exhibited larger isomerization than hydrogenation of ortho-xylene. At equilibrium, the products detected were meta- and para-xylenes, and dimethylcyclohexane (DMCH); meta-xylene being the main reaction product. An increase of hydrogen pressure from 5 to 10 bar led to an increase of isomerization and hydrogenation of ortho-xylene. Further increase of the hydrogen pressure from 10 to 40 bar had a very small effect on the catalyst activity.

© 2015 The Authors. Since 2006, the European Near Earth Asteroids Research (EURONEAR) project has been contributing to the research of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) within a European network. One of the main aims is the amelioration of the orbits of NEAs, and starting in 2014 February we focus on the recovery of one-opposition NEAs using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in La Palma in override mode. Part of this NEA recovery project, since 2014 June EURONEAR serendipitously started to discover and secure the first NEAs from La Palma and using the INT, thanks to the teamwork including amateurs and students who promptly reduce the data, report discoveries and secure new objects recovered with the INT and few other telescopes from the EURONEAR network. Five NEAs were discovered with the INT, including 2014 LU14, 2014 NL52 (one very fast rotator), 2014 OL339 (the fourth known Earth quasi-satellite), 2014 SG143 (a quite large NEA), and 2014 VP. Another very fast moving NEA was discovered but was unfortunately lost due to lack of follow-up time. Additionally, another 14 NEA candidates were identified based on two models, all being rapidly followed-up using the INT and another 11 telescopes within the EURONEAR network. They include one object discovered by Pan-STARRS, two Mars crossers, two Hungarias, one Jupiter trojan, and other few inner main belt asteroids (MBAs). Using the INT and Sierra Nevada 1.5 m for photometry, then the Gran Telescopio de Canarias for spectroscopy, we derived the very rapid rotation of 2014 NL52, then its albedo, magnitude, size, and its spectral class. Based on the total sky coverage in dark conditions, we evaluate the actual survey discovery rate using 2-m class telescopes. One NEA is possible to be discovered randomly within minimum 2.8 deg2 and maximum 5.5 deg2. These findings update our past statistics, being based on double sky coverage and taking into account the recent increase in discovery.

Deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of oil fractions is a key process in petroleum refineries due to the increasing demand for S-free diesel and gasoline fractions. In this work, a series of NiMo catalysts supported on Al- and P-modified HMS mesoporous substrate were tested in the HDS of thiophene and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) to evaluate the effect of Al and P additives on the catalyst response in HDS reactions (thiophene at 1 bar and 4,6-DMDBT at 5.5 MPa). The catalysts were characterized by a variety of techniques (XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, TPR, TPS, FT-IR of adsorbed pyridine, UV–vis and H2 chemisorption). NiMo/Al-HMS-P catalyst containing 1.0 wt.% of P exhibited the best performance in both HDS reactions as a consequence of the proper balance between the active phase dispersion and the largest hydrogenation ability among the studied catalysts. The 4,6-DMDBT HDS reaction proceeded toward direct desulfurization (DDS) and hydrogenation (HYD) reaction routes. Concerning the HDS of thiophene, the increase of the catalyst acidity led to the formation of butadiene and diminished the hydrogenation of olefins (formation of butane). At the reaction temperature of 320 °C, the NiMo/Al-HMS-P1.0 catalyst exhibited the highest activity and the lowest butane formation among the catalysts studied. The isomerization of olefins in the thiophene HDS reaction did not occur, in line with the observed absence of isomerization in the 4,6-DMDBT HDS reaction.

The renewable "green gasoline and diesel" from biomass are of special interest. The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is an attractive alternative for the production of ultra-clean sustainable and renewable free-sulfur liquid fuels from syngas conversion. FTS is of great industrial importance due to the great variety of hydrocarbon products obtained, whose abundance depends on the catalysts employed, as well as on operating conditions. Recently, it was found that Co/HMS catalysts showed higher catalytic performance and selectivity toward C5+ products than the Co/MCM-41 counterpart. The superior performance of Co/HMS sample was ascribed to their smaller domain size with shorter channels and larger textural mesoporosity. Lira and co-workers compared Co/HMS and Co/SiO2 catalysts in the FTS. Both catalysts showed selectivity toward C5+ products, specifically towards the diesel fraction (C11-C19).

Images in the g and r band and a low-resolution spectrum in the 0.35-0.9 micron region were obtained with the GTC telescope (La Palma, Spain). Images were analyzed to produce a color map and derive a lower limit of the absolute magnitude. A Monte Carlo (MC) scattering model was used to derive dust properties such as mass loss rates and ejection velocities as a function of time. The spectrum was compared to that of MBC 133P/Elst-Pizarro and used to search for CN emission. The spectrum of 2006 VW139 is typical of a C-class asteroid, with a spectral slope S=0.5+/-1.0%/1000A. It is similar to the spectrum of 133P and other MBCs. No CN emission is detected. A CN production rate upper limit of 3.76e23 1/s is derived. The MBC present a narrow almost linear tail that extends up to 40.000 km in the anti-solar direction and more than 80.000 km in the direction of the object's orbital plane. The color of the tail is slightly redder than the Sun (S=3 to 6%/1000A). The MC dust tail model derived the mass loss rates and ejection velocity as a function of time, and the results show that the activity onset occurs shortly after perihelion, and lasts about 100 days; the total ejected mass is about 2e6 kg. The spectrum of VW139 suggests that it is not a "normal" comet. It is typical of the other observed MBCs. Even if no CN emission is detected, the more likely activation mechanism is water-ice sublimation.
