By admitting pages into his household, King of Holland Louis Bonaparte (1806-1810) allowed upper class adolescents to be groomed for military careers in a prestigious environment. These traditional junior court positions, few in number and eagerly coveted, constituted one of the King’s instruments to bolster the legitimacy of his newly-created throne. This article examines royal patronage through the appointments of pages, considering Louis Bonaparte’s policies as well as the response of the country’s leading families. A prosopographical analysis of the total of twenty-five pages reveals how he sought to integrate as many sections of the kingdom’s broadened and fragmented elite as possible. The paper covers the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice’s public history based on the debate regarding the so-called «court history», a concept used by American scholars to designate the manipulation of history to serve the interests of public agencies. From this analysis it is concluded that the debate necessarily leads to the issue of public access to official documents, which is an aspect of greater importance than interpretative bias or institutional manipulation of history. Finally, it is argued that the policy of documentary access is the field where the approach and utility of public history can be fully developed at the highest justice tribunal of Mexico, as permitted by the field of possibilities opened by recent archival rules., El artículo aborda la historia pública en la Suprema Corte de Justicia de México a partir del debate sobre la llamada court history, término utilizado en el medio estadounidense para designar un tipo de historia manipulada por intereses institucionales públicos. De este análisis se concluye que tal debate conduce necesariamente al tema del acceso público a los documentos institucionales, resultando incluso un aspecto de mayor importancia que el del sesgo interpretativo o el de la manipulación institucional de la historia. Finalmente, se argumenta que la política de acceso documental es el campo donde se puede desarrollar plenamente el enfoque y la utilidad de la historia pública en el máximo tribunal de justicia mexicano, tal y como lo permite el campo de posibilidades abierto por normas recientes en materia archivística.

The juxtaposition not only highlights Napoleon’s constant interference in nominations, but also reveals some inconsistencies in the Emperor’s attitude. In addition, it emphasizes the marked impact of local conditions. Contrary to the situation in the other Napoleonic kingdoms, no Frenchmen entered the government posts in Holland, yet they dominated in senior court office.
