This qualitative dissertation delves into the therapeutic potential of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) as an intervention for individuals coping with trauma and related mental health challenges. Drawing from a diverse sample of participants with varying gender identities, age groups, and D&D experience levels, this study employs a grounded theory approach to unravel the intricate interplay between D&D engagement and mental health outcomes. The study identifies several key implications, including the importance of creating inclusive therapeutic spaces, the lifespan relevance of D&D interventions, the potential for tailored interventions addressing relationship dynamics, and the accessibility of D&D as a therapeutic tool. Delimitations highlight the contextual specificity, limited generalizability, sample characteristics, subjective perceptions, therapeutic emphasis, temporal constraints, and cultural considerations inherent to this research.

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand what resilience factors, if any, contribute to the reversal of adverse reactions to intergenerational trauma, in Native Americans. The study will attempt to use the data collected to determine an implementation of support that will build a scaffolding of resilience that can benefit Native American Children. The theory guiding this study is the resiliency theory, which conceptualizes positive variables that guide behaviors in individuals who have been exposed to historical trauma and experienced, Adverse Childhood Effects (ACEs) (Zimmerman, 2013). Using an exploratory qualitative design, this study worked to gather data from the Lower Elwha community, a Native American Tribe along the coast of Washington State. There has been a growing interest in the study of Adverse Childhood Effects (ACEs), and the part that resiliency plays in individual outcomes. However, these studies have not been applied to the Native American population and have not accounted for historical generational trauma. For this study to represent Native American peoples as a larger population, we considered the differences in how the S’Klallam tribal members viewed trauma and the severity of their experience. Data was collected from three S'Klallam tribal bands along the coast of Washington state. These bands consist of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, James Town tribe, and the Port Gamble tribe. The collection process included in-depth interviews using Conceptual Mapping Task (CMT).

This study aims to amplify the voices of working mothers and provide insights for achieving a balance between work and parenting particularly improving the academic learning of their children. This exploratory study employs a Multiple Case Study Analysis with 30 in-depth interviews of working mothers of school going children (aged 6-12 years). The study focuses on the banking sector of Pakistan, where heavy workloads and long hours exacerbate the challenge of keeping a balance between work and family demands. The study found that the basic elements (drainage of energy, lack of involvement, shortage of time, and emotional burden) needed to be mitigated for enabling working mothers to contribute to better academic learning of their children. It is recommended that four coping mechanisms need to be adopted by working mothers for mitigation of each of the four basic elements. The coping mechanisms include energy-centric, involvement-centric, time-centric, and emotion-centric mechanisms. Through adoption of these mechanisms, it is expected that working mothers will be able to create the much-needed alignment between being exceptional parents and professionally ambitious.

Stress is a pervasive challenge faced by individuals, including student leaders in academic settings. This study explores the leadership stress and coping mechanisms among student leaders in Public High School in Arayat, Pampanga. Through qualitative design and face-to-face interviews with eighteen (18) student leaders, stressors such as rules disobedience, lack of cooperation, pressure, and workload emerged as prominent themes. These stressors hindered effective leadership, highlighting the need for coping mechanisms to navigate the complexities of leadership roles. In response to the stressors identified, student leaders employ various coping mechanisms. Time management emerged as crucial, allowing leaders to organize tasks efficiently and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Seeking help from peers and mentors provided valuable support and insights, while withdrawal from stress for self-reflection, and religious coping, particularly prayer, offered solace and guidance. By employing these coping strategies, student leaders can effectively manage stress and enhance own leadership effectiveness. This study's findings shed light on the unique challenges faced by student leaders and provide valuable insights into coping mechanisms that can mitigate leadership stress. Understanding these dynamics can inform support systems and interventions to promote student leaders' well-being and effectiveness in their roles.

This study aims to identify barriers to female leadership and expose new strategies to address those barriers. Nevertheless, raise more awareness of the subconscious bias and gender stereotypes that may impede women's career development. Qualitative data has been conducted through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to the thematic narrative analysis model. The study finds that subconscious bias toward male leadership styles still exists within male-dominated fields and how agentic leadership styles earn greater credibility from both men and women within the STEM field. This study can conclude that women in STEM fields must work harder to prove their competence compared to their male counterparts and the importance of utilizing coping mechanisms.

Yellowstone River has seen increasing recreational use as Montana has grown and out of state visitation has increased, leading to some locals voicing concerns of crowding. River recreation, as with many outdoor recreational activities, has participants that may be considered to be sensitive to crowded conditions and place a high value on solitude. Considering these perceptions, there is reason to believe that these participants may change their river use patterns if or when the perceived level of crowding exceeds their tolerance thresholds. Further, monitoring efforts conducted at river access sites often do not fully capture users that are already displaced due to crowding. Previous research supports the idea that displacement and other coping mechanisms are common among users in crowded recreation locations, these behaviors may be leading to artificially high ratings of satisfaction, as the users most likely to be dissatisfied are not being captured because they have changed their use patterns to avoid crowding. The goal of this study is to examine the nature of displacement on the Yellowstone River, and the thresholds of crowding that may cause recreationists to be displaced. The study seeks to expand the current understanding of river use patterns, and the existing monitoring projects that have been undertaken on the Upper Yellowstone. From this expanded understanding, managers may be better equipped to address the user experience and measures of satisfaction on rivers in Montana by also considering users displaced from their preferred recreation areas. The study utilized a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from a convenience sample of 300 Sri Lankan university students from three universities in Sri Lanka. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Emotional Intelligence Scale, coping mechanisms were assessed using the Brief COPE Inventory, and mental health was assessed using the Mental Health Inventory-5. The study found that emotional intelligence was significantly positively associated with mental health and this relationship was partially mediated by coping mechanisms and moderated by gender. Emotional intelligence and coping mechanisms were significant predictors of mental health, with emotional intelligence having a greater effect. In this cross-sectional study, 200 students were selected based on convenient sampling technique to evaluate gender-based disparities. Questionnaires, consent forms, and demographic sheets were used to gather data. The present study found a correlation between coping and engagement strategies, furthermore a significant relationship between coping and academic stress was also found. The gender based disparities were also found, particularly in several areas of student involvement. These findings illustrate the significant relationship between coping strategies and academic stress, emphasizing the need of stress management for encouraging involvement in academic endeavours for both male and female students. The study's findings explain the role of academic stress on coping and engagement strategies, enabling students to enhance productivity in their academic careers. However, limited generalizability due to a small sample size should be considered. This study aimed to explore the psychological and other stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers (HCWs) in long-term care (LTC) homes in the Southern Alberta region in Canada. A qualitative descriptive research design was used to answer two research questions: (1) What are the psychological stressors of healthcare workers in LTC homes during the COVID-19 public health crisis in Southern Alberta, and (2) What are the coping mechanisms that healthcare workers in LTC homes find helpful in managing the identified stressors? Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data collected from semi-structured interviews with HCWs. The results revealed that the main pandemic stressors experienced by the HCWs were chronic understaffing, unpredictability and constant change, fear of risking being infected and the unknown, and disruption of work-life balance with an implication on the mental HCWs. The main coping mechanisms identified by the HCWs bordered on behavioural, social, and internal and spiritual coping responses. The findings from this study have implications for the development of effective measures for improving the mental health of HCWs in the LTC setting during a public health crisis and provide information for interventions that may promote the psychological wellbeing of HCWs. The study also offers policy and practice-based recommendations.

Mental health issues are a serious matter with great consequences on livelihoods. Iraqi Kurdistan is situated in one of the most unstable regions and experienced an influx of IDPs over time who are in need of mental health support. However, mental health support is shaped and understood differently according to the culture. The purpose of this research is therefore to investigate the consequences of the discrepancy between Western and local understanding and framing of mental health support (MHS) in IDP camps in Iraqi Kurdistan. To find answers to the research question, the methodology is based on the grounded theory by Charmaz. The data was mainly collected through semi-structured interviews with western psychologists working in the context of humanitarian aid in Iraqi Kurdistan and local mental health workers. The main findings revealed that a lack of understanding of what mental health support means and entails in the respective cultural contexts is based on differences. Differences in expectations, knowledge, the words used to describe the concepts, outlooks towards the future, how to approach the support, the way of sense-making, the suitability of solutions to certain problems, the expression of feelings, how society supports each other, and the communication of it all. This research concludes that mental health projects in IDP camps lack sustainability, practicality, and cultural appropriateness for humanitarian aid to fulfill its purpose. There needs to be a shift in how this work is realized, by decolonizing aid, which means localizing and including, by for example expanding the local education opportunities.

Exposure to the traumatic experiences of others can lead to secondary traumatization (STS), a condition comprising trauma-related symptoms. There is a lack of evidence on efficient ways to mitigate STS among professionals working with refugees, who are secondarily exposed to traumatic content. This study examines the latent structure of coping mechanisms and explores the predictive power of coping strategies for STS in a sample of professionals working with refugees. A total of 288 participants (age: M = 34.01, SD = 10.03; 57.3% female) working with refugees completed the COPE Inventory and Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale. Factor analysis of the COPE Inventory showed that coping mechanisms are grouped around four interrelated factors—Problem-focused, Socially supported emotion-focused, Avoidant, and Passive coping—which accounted for 46.7% of the variance. The regression model showed that Avoidant coping positively predicts negative alterations in cognition, mood, and reactivity (NACMR) and intrusions, and Passive coping was positively associated with NACMR and avoidance. Problem-focused coping was related to lower NACMR and avoidance, while Socially supported emotion-focused coping was not associated with any of the STS symptoms. In total, coping factors accounted for 10.8%, 6.3%, and 4.3% of the variance of NACMR, intrusions, and avoidance, respectively. The study provides a foundation for programs to mitigate STS among professionals working with refugees.

Perceived ethnic discrimination is known to decrease minorities’ life satisfaction. This research investigates the extent to which minorities’ local and transnational co-ethnic social ties mitigate the negative effects of perceived discrimination on life satisfaction. Put differently, focusing on the experiences of Turkish and Moroccan minorities, we discuss whether co-ethnic social ties, both locally and transnationally embedded, can be considered as coping mechanisms against perceived discrimination. Furthermore, we investigate whether these mechanisms work differently for first- and second-generation minorities. Using Netherlands Longitudinal Life-course Study, we reveal that perceived discrimination is positively associated with local co-ethnic social ties in Netherlands which consequently predicts higher life satisfaction for both generations. Surprisingly, we also show that only among the second generation perceived discrimination is associated with stronger transnational co-ethnic social ties, but not the first generation. Having these transnational ties however are beneficial for life satisfaction of both generations. Consequently, we highlight the importance of recognizing transnational embeddedness of minorities and studying the effects transnational co-ethnic social ties on subjective well-being outcomes especially for second-generation minorities.

Researchers have observed differences in stress levels, and coping abilities and mechanisms based on the community being studied. This paper reports on the impact of extracurricular activities and student communities on stress and coping for youth in the Seattle area. Various self-reports, distributed through school health teachers, were used to gain information on students' stress levels, coping mechanisms, and coping ability. Results indicate that general categorizations of communities and activities (music, sports, etc.) did not demonstrate a significant correlation with students' stress or coping levels. Correlations between stress and coping were found, as were correlations between stress and coping and the number of communities/activities that students were involved in. Results provide insight into how students' activity loads impact their stress and coping levels more than the specific activities they are involved in and open the door to further research in the field.

This essay is a large literature study on Asian, American, European, Oceanian and African countries about the economic consequences for households as a result of natural disasters and the coping mechanisms used by households, as well as governments and institutions. It also provides information about natural disasters, such as natural disasters that have the worst consequences, people that are highly affected by disasters and places in the world where disasters happen the most. The aim of this study is to learn more about environmental disasters and prepare better for future disasters. The results show consequences on welfare (income, assets, poverty), the labour market, migration and inequality. And the coping strategies found are post-disaster sources (help from family and relatives, public and private transfers, borrowing, credits, savings, insurance), decrease in expenditures, changes in consumption, selling assets, changes in the labour market, help from communities and other ways to cope. Governments and institutions also help households in the aftermath of natural disasters. Overall, we conclude that natural disasters lead to important economic impacts for people, and households react by using different coping mechanisms to recover.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a risk factor for multiple physical and psychological pathologies, which can lead to the adoption of risky strategies such as drug and alcohol use, deviant behaviours, or other coping mechanisms such as religious beliefs. Thus, the main objective of this study is to analyse how ACEs influence the adoption of different coping strategies, specifically: substance use, school failure, religious beliefs, and enlistment in the army. Participants were 490 young people between 18 and 20 years old, who responded to the Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire (abuse, neglect, and household dysfunctions), as well as to different questions about the study variables. The results indicated that coping strategies varied according to the type of adverse experience suffered. For example, abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) was associated with drug use, neglect (physical and emotional) with school failure and dysfunction at home (alcoholic family member, domestic violence, etc.), with loss of religiosity. In conclusion, there seem to be different coping mechanisms depending on the specific type of maltreatment, which may allow for much earlier and more efficient action and detection by professionals., Las Experiencias Adversas en la Infancia (ACEs) son un factor de riesgo para múltiples patologías tanto físicas como psicológicas, y pueden conllevar la adopción de estrategias de riesgo como el consumo de drogas, las conductas transgresoras, u otro tipo de mecanismo de afrontamiento como la creencia religiosa. Así, el objetivo de este estudio es analizar cómo influyen las ACEs en la adopción de diferentes estrategias de afrontamiento, en concreto: consumo de sustancias, fracaso escolar, creencias religiosas y alistamiento en el ejército. Los participantes, 490 jóvenes de entre 18 y 20 años, respondieron al cuestionario de Experiencias Adversas Infantiles (abuso, negligencia y disfunciones en el hogar), así como a diferentes preguntas sobre las variables de estudio. Los resultados indicaron que las estrategias de afrontamiento variaban en función del tipo de experiencia adversa sufrida. Por ejemplo, el abuso se asociaba con el consumo de drogas, la negligencia, con el fracaso escolar y las disfunciones en el hogar, con la perdida de religiosidad. En conclusión, parecen existir diferentes mecanismos de afrontamiento en función del tipo de maltrato específico, lo que puede permitir una actuación y detección mucho más temprana y eficiente por parte de los profesionales.

Sibling relationships have been proven to be influential to the well-being of emerging adults. However, the diversity of individuals, particularly in regard to siblings of individuals with disabilities, has rarely been examined. Therefore, the current study explored the association among sibling relationships, coping, and well-being of emerging adults who have non-disabled siblings or autistic siblings. A single online survey was distributed to people between 18-25 who have non-disabled siblings or autistic siblings. The results found that siblings of autistic individuals reported significantly less sibling warmth, less gratitude, and more emotion suppression than siblings of a non-disabled brother or sister. In addition, optimism, gratitude, and emotion suppression were mediators that affected how sibling warmth related to individual’s distress. Furthermore, optimism and gratitude could be mediators that influenced the relationship between sibling warmth and individual’s resilience. In conclusion, the current study proposed that the difference of coping styles may be the underlying mechanism of worse well-being of siblings, and more perceived sibling warmth may be a buffer for ASD-Sibs’ resilience and coping.

Socialsekreterarnas arbetsmiljö och arbetsbelastning har i flera år uppmärksammats i hopp om förbättring. Detta kan man finna i mängder forskningsstudier och andra rapporter, både från idag, tio år tillbaka och längre. Mot bakgrund av detta är syftet med föreliggande studie att undersöka hur socialsekreterare med beteendevetenskaplig- och socionominriktad utbildning ser på sin arbetsbelastning. Huvudfråga delas in i två subfrågor; hur utbildningar har förberett socialsekreterarna på att hantera arbetsbelastning samt hur arbetsbelastningen hanteras på plats i yrket- med fokus på beteendevetare och socionomer. Ingen tidigare forskning finns att hitta riktad mot dessa examenstyper och mer forskning krävs för att belysa skillnader vad gäller socialsekreterarnas utbildningsbakgrund i denna fråga. Fokus riktas mot att skapa en djupareförståelse för om de skiljer sig åt mellan de två utbildningsbakgrunder med hänsyn till ovannämnda två forskningsfrågor. För att kunna utföra denna undersökning så har semistrukturerade intervjuer används med åtta deltagare sammanlagd; fyra är av respektive utbildning. Det insamlade datamaterialet analyserades utifrån en tematisk analysmetod och resulterade i två teman. Under vardera tema identifierades även subteman. Resultatet visar att samtliga informanter upplever att arbetsbelastningen är hög men hanterbar. Samtliga informanter beskriver att utbildning inte har förberett socialsekreterarna på att hantera arbetsbelastning i det kommande yrkeslivet, dvs inga strategier eller verktyg till hur man kan gå tillväga har informerats om i utbildningen- oavsett utbildningsbakgrund. Fyndet med studien vad gäller hantering av arbetsbelastning på plats i yrket visar sig vara att samtliga informanter är ense om tillvägagångssättet för hur man kan hantera detta stressmoment. With this as a notion, the purpose of this study is to determine how social workers with an education in behavioural science and in social work view their workload. The main inquiry here is divided into two parts:In what way has the social workers education prepared them in handling workload? And how is the workload handled onsite in the workplace- primarily focusing on people with an education in behavioural science and social work. No previous research can be found focusing on these types of degrees and more research is needed to examine the differences between social wokers' educational backgrounds in this issue. The focus is to create a deeper understanding of whether there is a difference between the two educational backgrounds in this issue. To perform this study, qualitative research was used with a semi-structured interview and with a total of eight informants. Four informants from each educational background. The data gathered was analysed with a thematic analysis method and resulted in two different themes. Under each of the separate themes, different subthemes were also identified. The results shows that all participants experience that the workload is high, but manageable. All participants express that their education has not prepared them to manage workload in the coming profession –regardless of their previous education. The findings in this study in regards to handling workload, is shown to be that all participants are in agreement in how to deal with the stress that the occupational workload induces. Socialsekreterarnas arbetsmiljö och arbetsbelastning har i flera år uppmärksammats i hopp om förbättring. Detta kan man finna i mängder forskningsstudier och andra rapporter, både från idag, tio år tillbaka och längre. Mot bakgrund av detta är syftet med föreliggande studie att undersöka hur socialsekreterare med beteendevetenskaplig- och socionominriktad utbildning ser på sin arbetsbelastning. Huvudfråga delas in i två subfrågor; hur utbildningar har förberett socialsekreterarna på att hantera arbetsbelastning samt hur arbetsbelastningen hanteras på plats i yrket- med fokus på beteendevetare och socionomer. Ingen tidigare forskning finns att hitta riktad mot dessa examenstyper och mer forskning krävs för att belysa skillnader vad gäller socialsekreterarnas utbildningsbakgrund i denna fråga. Fokus riktas mot att skapa en djupareförståelse för om de skiljer sig åt mellan de två utbildningsbakgrunder med hänsyn till ovannämnda två forskningsfrågor. För att kunna utföra denna undersökning så har semistrukturerade intervjuer används med åtta deltagare sammanlagd; fyra är av respektive utbildning. Det insamlade datamaterialet analyserades utifrån en tematisk analysmetod och resulterade i två teman. Under vardera tema identifierades även subteman. Resultatet visar att samtliga informanter upplever att arbetsbelastningen är hög men hanterbar. Samtliga informanter beskriver att utbildning inte har förberett socialsekreterarna på att hantera arbetsbelastning i det kommande yrkeslivet, dvs inga strategier eller verktyg till hur man kan gå tillväga har informerats om i utbildningen- oavsett utbildningsbakgrund. Fyndet med studien vad gäller hantering av arbetsbelastning på plats i yrket visar sig vara att samtliga informanter är ense om tillvägagångssättet för hur man kan hantera detta stressmoment. We depict the physical and psychological challenges of commercial fishing in Alaska as well as the uplifts, or positive experiences fishermen report. We describe an array of coping methods that are utilized during the fishing season and the contexts in which they occur. Our findings help clarify the link between human behavior, stressors, coping mechanisms employed, and uplifts experienced when working in extreme conditions. By doing this, we provide a better understanding of the effects that severe conditions have on wellbeing, such as working for long periods of time in cramped quarters in remote, extreme environments, and how Alaskan fishermen cope with them.

Cilj ove doktorske disertacije je ispitivanje psiholoških aspekata steriliteta u kontekstu Transakcionog modela stresa i prevladavanja kod žena koje imaju problem sa sterilitetom. Ispitani su zastupljenost i međusobna povezanost rezilijentnosti, opštih i specifičnih mera samoefikasnosti, mehanizama prevladavanja, stresa i kvaliteta života kod ispitanica koje imaju problem sa sterilitetom i onih koje su trudne ili imaju decu. Uzorak (N=500) čine žene koje imaju problem sa sterilitetom – klinička grupa (N=250) i trudnice i majke koje nisu imale problem sa sterilitetom – kontrolna grupa (N=250), starosti od 20 do 48 godina (M=33,04; SD=4,877). Dve grupe ispitanica ujednačene su po starosnoj dobi. Prvi deo istraživanja sproveden je na Ginekološko-akušerskoj klinici „Narodni front“ u Beogradu, na odeljenju steriliteta, a drugi deo u savetovalištu za trudnice Ginekološko-akušerske klinike „Narodni front“ i online. The prevalence and interrelation of resilience, general and specific self-efficacy, coping mechanisms, stress and quality of life were examined among women with infertility and women who are pregnant or have children. The study sample (N=500) consists of women who have a problem with infertility - a clinical group (N=250) and pregnant women and mothers who did not have a problem with infertility - control group (N=250), aged 20 to 48 years (M=33,04; SD=4.877). Two groups of respondents were equated by age. The first part of the research was conducted at the Gynecology and Obstetric Clinic "Narodni Front" in Belgrade, at the department of infertility, and the second part was conducted at the counseling center for pregnant women at the Gynecology and Obstetric Clinic "Narodni Front", and on line.
