2. Charity in Saudi Arabia: Civil Society under Authoritarianism

- Abstract
"This is a book about Saudi Arabian civil society. This might sound like an oxymoron. Saudi Arabia is widely considered an authoritarian Islamic state with little space for any civil initiative to maneuver in or to flourish. Indeed, the Saudi Arabian state monitors and controls the life of its citizens with a rigid iron fist and does not allow for autonomous civil society organizations with any democratic undertones. Yet, this book presents a different perspective from which to view and understand Saudi Arabian society, not from a top-down vantage point - of how the state plans and controls complex social and political situations - but bottom-up, from the point of view of "on the ground" civil society initiatives, such as charities and other volunteering groups, and the ways they act and react in face of diverse social events, initiate and follow in face of governmental power and politics. With a focus on the social and what is occurring in society, my research leads me to suggest a more nuanced picture of state-society relations and the agency of ordinary Saudis and non-Saudis in the kingdom. I began pondering these issues following my experience with the aid campaign after the Jeddah floods in 2009. It was this experience that led me to seek different analytical and conceptual tools for understanding Saudi Arabian society than the ones currently in use in academic research of this unique country, where royal power, Wahhabi religious scholarship and enormous oil wealth set an opaque facade that covers a complex and vibrant social life", Includes bibliographical references and index., "This is a book about Saudi Arabian civil society. - Abstract
Doctor of Ministry (DMin), The purpose of this project is to create an online training course that introduces a “culture of philanthropy” to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) staff in the U.S. The course will serve as a “holding environment” for a process of adaptive change in which MCC staff can develop shared language around generosity and gratitude. The goal of the course is to spark a shift in attitudes about money: from discomfort and suspicion to gratitude and generosity. The four-module course was tested in a pilot group including fundraising and non-fundraising staff. The project examines MCC’s historical relationship with the financial resources required to fulfill its mission. It traces structural and theological dynamics that have fostered current suspicions about money. It then proposes a culture of philanthropy, based in a theology of abundance, as a path to financial sustainability in the future. Organizational culture change requires savvy strategy, and the project surveys literature on organizational and adaptive leadership to ground the work. The online course provided an asynchronous environment for MCC staff to reflect on philanthropy, money, and biblical generosity. It explained an overview of MCC’s revenue streams and shared stories from several donors about why they give to MCC. Staff took before-and-after surveys to measure learnings and potential changes in assumptions. Participants were invited to optional small group zoom conversations after completing the course.

- Abstract
Introduction: The veteran population in the UK has been decreasing, however, there remains a proportion of veterans and their families who continue to experience multiple and complex health, financial, and social needs. The complex problems tend to exacerbate each other and deepen over time if appropriate support is not provided. Identifying the veterans with complex needs is crucial for effective support by military charities and health and social care services. The present research aims to develop a complex needs indicator for the veteran population (CNIV) that will quantify complexity and help to identify the risk of having or developing complex needs. Methods: The development of the CNIV will be informed by the guidance for constructing composite indicators. The data on grant support received by veterans’ beneficiaries from the UK Royal Marine and SSFA charities will be used for designing the indicator and evaluating its robustness. The crucial step in constructing the indicator is assigning weights to different needs and risk factors associated with complex cases. Factor analysis (FA) and analytical network process (ANP) will be used as weighting methods for the analysed variables. Conclusion: The development of CNIV has important implications for research and practice, such as the potential to be used as a screening tool for identifying complex cases, improved provision of the targeted support to veterans, assessing the scope of complex problems among veterans within the country and informing policy makers and a more general audience of the complexity of need within the sector.

9. Competing Responses to Global Inequalities in Access to COVID Vaccines: Vaccine Diplomacy and Vaccine Charity Versus Vaccine Liberty.

- Abstract
Global access to coronavirus vaccines has been extraordinarily unequal and remains an ongoing source of global health insecurities from the evolution of viral variants in the bodies of the unvaccinated. There have nevertheless been at least 3 significant alternatives developed to this disastrous bioethical failure. These alternatives are reviewed in this article in the terms of "vaccine diplomacy," "vaccine charity," and "vaccine liberty." Vaccine diplomacy includes the diverse bilateral deliveries of vaccines organized by the geopolitical considerations of countries strategically seeking various kinds of global and regional advantages in international relations. Vaccine charity centrally involves the humanitarian work of the global health agencies and donor governments that have organized the COVAX program as an antidote to unequal access. Despite their many promises, however, both vaccine diplomacy and vaccine charity have failed to deliver the doses needed to overcome the global vaccination gap. Instead, they have unfortunately served to immunize the global vaccine supply system from more radical demands for a "people's vaccine," technological transfer, and compulsory licensing of vaccine intellectual property (IP). These more radical demands represent the third alternative to vaccine access inequalities. As a mix of nongovernmental organization-led and politician-led social justice demands, they are diverse and multifaceted, but together they have been articulated as calls for vaccine liberty. After first describing the realities of vaccine access inequalities, this article compares and contrasts the effectiveness thus far of the 3 alternatives. In doing so, it also provides a critical bioethical framework for reflecting on how the alternatives have come to compete with one another in the context of the vaccine property norms and market structures entrenched in global IP law. The uneven and limited successes of vaccine diplomacy and vaccine charity in delivering

- Abstract
Welfare states in Europe and around the world are experiencing growing numbers of people with limited or unclear rights to public welfare within their borders. These are refugees, undocumented migrants, EU-migrants and other groups of displaced or deprived people seeking a better life. In Sweden, this situation is trying the highly held principles of social and human rights, as charities are becoming an increasingly important complement to rights-based public welfare services. This article will show how eight different City Missions in Sweden are seeing a new role for themselves in an emerging social landscape. The findings will be analysed in terms of social and human rights, using the classic theories of T. H. Marshall as well as more recent research.

15. What role for Syrian non-governmental organisations in Deir ez-Zor after the war?
- Abstract
During the years of war in Deir ez-Zor and the siege imposed by Islamic State on the pocket of territory in the city controlled by the Assad regime, Syrian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) failed to alleviate the suffering experienced by the local residents who remained there. After the fighting ended in the regime’s favour in late 2017, UN agencies and international NGOs expanded their intervention in Deir ez-Zor, which encouraged a number of local charitable and development NGOs to resume their activities. It also encouraged a growing number of national associations to implement projects and open offices in the city. Based on first-hand information, this study examines the roles of Syrian charitable and development NGOs operating in Deir ez-Zor city and analyses the key challenges they face in terms of their relationships with the ruling authorities and local communities.

The third author acknowledges the support of ICREA Academia., This paper draws on research analyzing the emotional and relational impacts of poverty and exclusion on charities' clients in Spain since the 2008-2009 economic crisis, including people experiencing multiple exclusion homelessness (MEH). The study adopts a mixed-methods approach in which twenty in-depth cases were collected in different geographical locations, including twelve cases experiencing MEH. Unlike other disadvantaged groups, those affected by MEH suffer material shortages, traumatic experiences, psychological disorders, physical illnesses, and a high degree of relational vulnerability, as reflected in the structure and composition of their personal networks, which tend to be smaller in size, with just a few weak and temporary contacts, and with care professionals playing an important role. These charity users often need long-term socio-sani-tary care, which challenges public and private health-care systems. Therefore, our contribution to this Special Issue is directed toward improving understanding of the relational characteristics of severely excluded people, how social support affects their personal networks, and the challenges this assistance poses to care services.

- Abstract
Charities play an essential role in Irish society. People benefit from support in health and social services, from social housing to specific health related organisations. It is important for charities to be able to invest in digital strategies which can support them in spreading the word of their cause, in raising awareness, in fundraising, and in recruiting talent. Importantly, digital strategies can also include cost-effective ways to increase accessibility and reach the largest possible number of people in need. Despite this, charities have traditionally been expected to serve society with very little investment going towards their digital strategies. This has meant that many charities have missed out on some of the opportunities of digital, and this has been highlighted by challenges they have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, however, charities have been developing digital strategies in areas which include fundraising, service provision, volunteer involvement and remote working. As the steps taken by charities in making this switch have been largely unexplored, this thesis analyses what changes have been made, how they have been managed, and if the increased use of digital strategies will continue even when the pandemic’s restrictions are lifted. This is done by analysing the overall level of change made within each respondent charity, and classifying it as either Digitalisation or Digital Transformation. This thesis also highlights how the digital changes are being managed by charities. To do this, an inductive and qualitative approach was chosen by conducting interviews with 14 senior representatives from various charities. The results of this research reveal that a pattern is emerging within the Irish charity sector which indicates a change of mindset regarding the investments being made towards new and innovative digital strategies. Such digital strategies have enabled charities to generate more revenue, increase access to se

- Abstract
The present study conducts a multimodal discourse analysis of texts from the three charities UNICEF, Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders and investigates how the reader is encouraged to support these organizations by donating money. The aim is to explore what relationship to the reader that is established, as well as what attitudes that are expressed through textual and visual modes. To do this, three texts from each charity are selected, all regarding the 10-year-long Syrian war, so a comparison can be drawn between the organizations’ different linguistic strategies. The study is based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, Halliday’s metafunctions and the appraisal theory presented by Martin & White. Previous studies illustrate how the theoretical frameworks can be applied in analyses of advertisement, narrative texts and fundraising letters by non-for-profit organizations. This study provides further illustration of the significant role of different details in pictures and written text in order to inspire and persuade the reader to help finance the organizations. The results discern a charity discourse, where the texts not only emphasize the importance of helping those in need, but also to support and allow the charities to continue their crucial work worldwide. The texts also seem to aim at arousing empathy and creating a close relationship to the reader in order to encourage donations.

- Abstract
Childhood economic disadvantage is associated with lower cognitive and social-emotional skills, reduced educational attainment, and lower earnings in adulthood. Despite these robust correlations, it is unclear whether family income is the cause of differences observed between children growing up in poverty and their more fortunate peers or whether these differences are merely due to the many other aspects of family life that co-occur with poverty. Baby's First Years is the first randomized controlled trial in the United States designed to identify the causal impact of poverty reduction on children's early development. A total of 1000 low-income mothers of newborns were enrolled in the study and began receiving a monthly unconditional cash gift for the first several years of their children's lives. Mothers were randomly assigned to receive either a large monthly cash gift or a nominal monthly cash gift. All monthly gifts are administered via debit card and can be freely spent with no restrictions. Baby's First Years aims to answer whether poverty reduction in early childhood (1) improves children's developmental outcomes and promotes healthier brain functioning, and (2) improves family functioning and better enables parents to support child development. Here we present the rationale and design of the study as well as potential implications for science and policy.

- Abstract
Nonprofit firm producing services that are of broad public concern - mission-driven organizations - pay lower wages and often use low-powered incentive schemes, which has been explained by binding financial constraints and the threat to attract wrong worker types if wages are increased. Yet, they face higher labor turnover than for-profit firms, which is very costly. We construct a simple model that reproduces these stylized facts, explains the high labor turnover of mission-driven organizations, and suggests a way out of this nonprofit's dilemma, based on insights from the economic psychology literature. We construct testable empirical hypotheses and offer managerial and policy implications.

- Abstract
The literature on international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) has focused primarily on large INGOs, which capture the majority of total INGO spending but represent a small number of total INGOs. Over the past two decades, the number of INGOs has more than tripled throughout the global North, which has ushered in a decentralization of the sector as an emerging class of small- and medium-sized INGOs increasingly share the same space once occupied solely by large INGOs. This study focuses on these INGOs in transition to explore how they differ from large INGOs that receive significant government funding and their pathways to scale. Using an original dataset of 1371 Canadian INGOs, we explored comparative differences related to funding sources, overhead, organizational age, country coverage, staff, and religion between the transitioning and small-scale INGOs. Our results identified several general insights for how INGOs transition: (1) Large INGOs are less likely to articulate a religious motivation, which may impede government funding; (2) INGOs are more likely to be headquartered in Ontario, which is closer to federal government offices; (3) low overhead expenditures inhibit small-scale INGOs from transitioning to medium- and large-scale INGOs; (4) organizational age plays a critical factor to scale-up as INGOs increase their experience and expertise; (5) generous compensation to attract talented staff offers an under-valued pathway to scale. Finally, our results demonstrate the diversity among INGOs in Canada and problematizes singular scale-up pathways, while underscoring the necessity of future research to explore scaling strategies through individual case studies.

- Abstract
Clinical evidence suggests that mindfulness meditation reduces anxiety, depression, and stress, and improves emotion regulation due to modulation of activity in neural substrates linked to the regulation of emotions and social preferences. However, less was known about whether mindfulness meditation might alter pro-social behavior. Here we examined whether mindfulness meditation activates human altruism, a component of social cooperation. Using a simple donation game, which is a real-world version of the Dictator's Game, we randomly assigned 326 subjects to a mindfulness meditation online session or control and measured their willingness to donate a portion of their payment for participation as a charitable donation. Subjects who underwent the meditation treatment donated at a 2.61 times higher rate than the control (p = 0.005), after controlling for socio-demographics. We also found a larger treatment effect of meditation among those who did not go to college (p < 0.001) and those who were under 25 years of age (p < 0.001), with both subject groups contributing virtually nothing in the control condition. Our results imply high context modularity of human altruism and the development of intervention approaches including mindfulness meditation to increase social cooperation, especially among subjects with low baseline willingness to contribute.

28. Giving to God: Islamic Charity in Revolutionary Times

- Abstract
"During the 2011 uprising, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to call for social justice. Three years later, President el-Sisi promoted economic growth, mega projects, hard work, and citizens' sacrifices. What many of the activists and el-Sisi have in common, despite their radically different visions, is an objection to charity and handouts--to 'giving a man a fish.' Set against this drastically shifting historical backdrop, this book describes an alternative vision of justice: an Islamic ethics of giving that is enacted in Cairo's alleys, mosque courtyards, saint shrines, and slums. It tells the story of a range of pious Muslims--housewives, Sufi devotees, and Salafi volunteers--who, day after day, hand out meals to the poor, and it tells the story of people at the receiving end--beggars, single-parent families, and dervishes. This form of giving is not grounded in compassion, the desire to end poverty, or the hope for a better world, but rather it is understood as a duty and a way to interact with God. By initiating an unlikely conversation between such lived understandings of Islam and the revolutionary moment, this book invites a reimagining of justice and ethics beyond 'the human.' It ethnographically disrupts the entrenched claim that handouts are outdated, shortsighted, and damaging--that they inherently and necessarily stand in the way of social justice"--Provided by publisher., Includes bibliographical references and index., Revolutions don't stop charity -- Divine minimum wage -- Caravan to paradise -- Performances of poverty -- All thanks belong to god -- Tomorrow is better., "During the 2011 uprising, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to call for social justice. - Abstract
Recent years have seen some changes in Australian charitable giving. Drawing on findings from the Giving Australia 2005 and Giving Australia 2016 projects, this article discusses key ways monetary giving has altered. While acknowledging the difficulties of comparing the two studies, the trend of fewer people giving is clear. However, those who do give are giving more. Advancements in technology and giving methods, as well as a more deliberative approach to giving, explain why this change has occurred.

- Abstract
In this dissertation, I explore the changing landscape of veteran-focused nonprofit organizations in the United States in the post-9/11 era through an ethnographic research design with veterans’ charities in San Diego. Though veterans’ supportive services are an important issue in American consciousness, little scholarly attention has been paid to the private sector agencies that provide for veterans’ welfare. I highlight how veteran-focused charities have begun to take hold in the nonprofit sector as new purveyors of veterans’ services. I also trace the emerging logics and practices they bring to their work, including how they approach collaboration as well as the gendered division of labor. I show that veterans’ charities can negotiate institutional logics from both the nonprofit sector and the military and, in so doing, generate novel organizational practices. Attention to these organizations can yield important insights for scholars of veterans, the military, and nonprofit organizations.

- Abstract
This report provides detailed analysis of the characteristics and contributions of Australia’s grant-making charities. It uses the Annual Information Statement (AIS) provided by charities to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) for the 2016 reporting period. The information provides unprecedented insight into the characteristics, structure, activities, purposes and resources of different types of grant-making charities, distinguishing between private ancillary funds (PAFs), public ancillary funds (PuAFs), trusts, and other grant-makers.

- Abstract
There is some evidence in the literature that organisational learning (OL) is gaining momentum among international non-governmental organisations (INGOs), as a means to strengthen capacity to serve the most vulnerable populations in a context of increasing economic constraints. Following a major operational change undertaken in 2014-2015 at The Fred Hollows Foundation, a public health INGO focused on treating and preventing blindness and other vision problems in developing countries, the need to become a better learning organisation was identified. This thesis examines the processes of identifying suitable initiatives for OL at The Foundation, as well as the findings from and outcomes of those processes, which include the development of a strategy addressing its OL and knowledge management needs.Conducted from a practitioner-researcher perspective, a mixed-method approach was undertaken including a survey, semi-structured interviews and focus-group discussions with staff members from the Foundation. Their purpose was to examine perceptions of The Foundation’s performance as a learning organisation and implications for the future. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives from other INGOs and public health NGOs that had a reputation for performing well as learning organisations. Empirical findings show that in a complex and rapidly changing operating environment, INGOs have a strong incentive to become learning organisations. Factors influencing OL include: allocation of resources; developing structures, systems and processes; inspired leadership that acts as a role model; and fostering a culture of learning, including by promoting relevant skillsets and behaviours. Eight categories identified in the literature to classify specific mechanisms were validated by this study and a new category emerged outlining the importance of sharing the knowledge produced within the organisation with the wider sector. Based on these findings, an evid

- Abstract
There is growing concern that the physician-scientist is endangered due to a leaky training pipeline and prolonged time to scientific independence (1). The NIH Physician-Scientist Workforce Working Group has concluded that as many as 1,000 individuals will need to enter the pipeline each year to sustain the workforce (2). Moreover, surveys of postgraduate training programs document considerable variability in disposition and infrastructure (3). Programs can be broadly grouped into two classes: physician-scientist training programs (PSTPs) that span residency and fellowship training, and research-in-residency programs (RiRs), which are limited to residency but trainees are able to match into PSTPs upon transitioning to fellowship (Figure 1). Funding sources for RiRs and PSTPs are varied and include NIH KL2 and T32 awards, charitable foundations, philanthropy, and institutional support. Furthermore, standards for research training and tools for evaluating programmatic success are lacking. Here, we share consensus generated from iterative workshops hosted by the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) and the student-led American Physician Scientists Association (APSA).

Sex workers' rights are human rights, and as such are an issue inherently based in social, criminal, and political justice debates. As HCI continues to move towards feminist and social justice oriented research and design approaches, we argue that we need to take into consideration the difficulties faced by sex workers; and explore how technology can and does mediate social justice outcomes for them. We contribute directly to this challenge by providing an empirical account of a charity whose work is built on the underlying move towards social and criminal justice for sex workers in the UK. Through ethnographic fieldwork, meetings, interviews, surveys, and creative workshops we describe the different points of view associated with the charity from a variety of stakeholders. We discuss their service provision and the ways in which HCI is uniquely positioned to be able respond to the needs of and to support sex work support services., QC 20190913. - Abstract
The article investigates the problem of the state to stimulate the participation of commercial entities in charitable activities. Comparing the charitable support of commercial organizations and a list of destinations that, from the standpoint of the state, has a special social significance, it can be concluded, that projects which the state views as priority ones have the same value from the point of view of business. That means that charitable donations in this case are aimed at the same end recipients of social services that also get public funding. In this study incentives for philanthropists are considered in the context of the replacement of budget funds allocated to finance socially important areas with private donations. The question of the appropriateness of tax incentives to encourage philanthropy is considered, and the possible effectiveness of philanthropy is assessed. The mechanism is analyzed of preferential tax treatment of charitable activities of commercial organizations used in the West as one of the alternative sources of financing for non-profit organizations. As an empirical basis for the study data from reports by banks operating in the Irkutsk region is sued. The article analyzes the main advantages and disadvantages of indirect subsidization of public goods and services through the mechanism of preferential tax treatment. Taking into account the factor of preferential taxation as a mechanism to reduce the cost of charitable services for the company, an evaluation is done of the existing level of participation of banks in the study of corporate philanthropy. The author attempts to construct a theoretical model describing the effect of tax incentives for the financing of the charitable sector, and tries to find the optimal limit of accounting charitable expenditure as a cost. The study leads to a conclusion about the hypothetical possibility of an increase in donations after with the introduction of preferential tax treatment, and substantiatio,

- Abstract
How charities communicate is an important aspect in creating engagement. By using different elements in campaign films, organizations can increase the visibility and awareness of the receiver. The purpose of this study is to find out how two of Sweden's leading charity organizations communicate via campaign films in order to create engagement. We examine which elements and myths that are present in the campaign films, how celebrities can help to encourage involvement and the role of social media in audience engagement. The theoretical framework for this study is based upon topics such as celebrity spokespersons, audience engagement and spread in social media. It is a qualitative study using an inductive approach, and we conduct a semiotic and rhetorical analysis of four campaign films. The sample consists of two campaign films by the organization Unicef and two campaign films from Plan Sverige. The study shows that charities use famous people to appeal to audiences of different ages and to increase the credibility of the communication. By using underprivileged children as elements, feelings of compassion and frustration over the situation of children are reinforced and this can arouse a need of deeper involvement of the receiver. Using elements of comedy, celebrities and unique messages, campaigns can stand out from the crowd and get a larger spread in social media. Receivers may feel a desire to share the messages further, partly to strengthen their personal brand, but also to create a debate on the issue.
