The Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania represent a hotspot for biological diversity of global importance. The level of endemism is high, and Eastern Arc biodiversity has been studied extensively in vertebrates and invertebrates, including millipedes. However, millipede evolution is vastly understudied at the molecular level. Therefore, we used next-generation 'shotgun' sequencing to obtain mitochondrial genome sequences of 26 museum specimens, representing six genera and 12 millipede species found across the Eastern Arc Mountains. Bayesian and maximum likelihood methods yielded consistent topologies with high node support, confirming a high level of congruence between molecular and morphological analyses. The only exception was a Tropostreptus sigmatospinus individual from Zanzibar, which was placed outside an otherwise monophyletic group consisting of mainland individuals of the same assumed species. For two species with a distribution across several mountain blocks (Tropostreptus sigmatospinus and Tropostreptus hamatus), each mountain population represents a distinct monophyletic lineage. In contrast, we also observe that distinct species exist sympatrically in the same montane forests, indicative of older speciation events that are not defined by current forest distribution. Our results are important for understanding speciation mechanisms in montane rain forests and highlight that ethanol-preserved invertebrates exhibit a tremendous potential for genomic analyses. more...

We report on a first measurement with a sensitive opto-mechanical force sensor designed for the direct detection of coupling of real chameleons to matter. These dark energy candidates could be produced in the Sun and stream unimpeded to Earth. The KWISP detector installed on the CAST axion search experiment at CERN looks for tiny displacements of a thin membrane caused by the mechanical effect of solar chameleons. The displacements are detected by a Michelson interferometer with a homodyne readout scheme. The sensor benefits from the focusing action of the ABRIXAS X-ray telescope installed at CAST, which increases the chameleon flux on the membrane. A mechanical chopper placed between the telescope output and the detector modulates the incoming chameleon stream. We present the results of the solar chameleon measurements taken at CAST in July 2017, setting an upper bound on the force acting on the membrane of 80pN at 95% confidence level. Chameleons are scalar fields coming from modied gravity theories and can be possible explanations for Dark Energy. They cause a fifth force and have a screening mechanism which allows this force to avoid solar system constraints. In this thesis, astrophysical consequences of the potential presence of the chameleon field will be studied. More precisely, the difference between the hydrostatical and the weak lensing mass of galaxy clusters due to the effect of the chameleon fifth force is discussed. more...

[Background]: Amniote gastrulation is often described with respect to human, mouse and chick development by the presence of the primitive streak, a posterior-to-anterior midline morphological cell ingression feature that has come to define Amniote gastrulation. How this midline, ingression-based strategy of gastrulation evolved from the ancestral blastopore, a circumferential involution event in Anamniotes, is unknown. However, within the Amniote clade there exists a more diverse range of gastrulation strategies than just the primitive streak. Investigating gastrulation in a wider range of Amniotes provides a way to understand evolutionary transition from blastopore to the primitive streak. [Results]: We analysed early to late gastrulation stages of Chamaeleo calyptratus, showing their unique morphology through confocal imaging of F-actin and laminin-stained embryos to visualise cell morphology and assess basal lamina integrity. We analysed the expression pattern of core mesodermal markers Brachyury and Fgf8 and complimented this analysis with that of the turtle, Trachemys scripta. [Conclusions]: Our analysis suggests that reptile gastrulation is bi-modal; primary internalization occurs anteriorly by means of an incomplete blastopore-like opening, while posteriorly the cells undergo ingression in the Brachyury-expressing blastoporal plate. This strategy stands mid-way between Anamniotes and Avians/Mammals, suggesting that blastoporal plate is a precursor of the avian primitive streak. more...

Many reptiles lay eggs with Xexible shells that can progressively lose water until lethal dehydration under dry soil conditions. The number of eggs that develop together may inXuence the water exchange in the nest. We hypothesise that egg aggregation could reduce water lost under dry conditions. We exposed aggregated and isolated eggs to severe hydric stress followed by a period of rehy- dration. Hydric stress caused a general loss of water in common chameleon eggs. Initial egg mass did not aVect survival but eggs that had lost more water had higher mor- tality and produced smaller hatchlings. Mass loss was higher and even lethal for isolated Chamaeleo chameleon eggs. However, aggregated eggs lost less water and most survived this period. After hydric stress, all surviving eggs gained mass via water absorption, and aggregation nega- tively aVected water uptake. Isolated eggs hatched at smaller sizes than aggregated eggs. Aggregation also favoured hatching synchrony. Large clutches may favour hatching success of terrestrial Xexible-shelled eggs incu- bated under severe drought conditions. more...

A cytological study of the spermatogenesis of the American chameleon lizard, Anelis carolinensis, of the family Iguanidas, was made. Testicular tissue, taken from animals collected around Schriever, Louisiana (elevation 15 feet), was fixed in a modification of the Bouin-Allen fluid (corrected for altitude). Slides were prepared in the usual manner and stained in iron hemotoxylin. The diploid number of chromosomes was found to be thirty-four and the haploid number, seventeen. The prophase stages, as well as the metamorphosis of the spermatozoa, followed a general reptilian trend in development. Morphological evidence of sex-chromosomes was encountered. These chromosomes were most obvious in the side view of the primary spermatocyte cells. The sex-chromosome is bipartite and has spindle fiber attachments at one pole of the cell only. more...
