Microorganisms, microbiomes, and their products (e.g., enzymes, metabolites, antibiotics, etc.) are key players in the functioning of both natural and anthropized Earth ecosystems; they can be exploited for both research purposes and biotechnological applications, including fighting the big challenges of our era, such as climate change. Culture collections (CCs) and microbial Biological Resource Centres (mBRCs) are repositories of microorganisms that investigate and safeguard biodiversity and facilitate the scientific and industrial communities’ access to microbial strains and related know-how by providing external users with skills and services. Considering this, CCs and mBRCs are pivotal institutions for the valorisation of microorganisms, the safeguarding of life, and the fostering of excellent bioscience. The aim of this review is to present the state-of-the-art of Italian CCs and mBRCs, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities. Italy is, indeed, a hotspot of microbial biodiversity with a high rate of endemism and incredible potential, not only for the food and beverage sector (i.e., “Made in Italy” products), where microorganisms can have a beneficial or a spoiling function, but also to guarantee environmental sustainability and foster the bioeconomy through the design of new bioprocesses and products. However, weaknesses, such as the lack of management rules in accordance with international quality standards, are also analysed and ways of overcoming them are discussed. In this context, an overview is given of the Joint Research Unit MIRRI-IT and the European-funded SUS-MIRRI.IT project, which aims to improve the management and sustainability of Italian microbial collections, and serves as a starting point for an innovative revolution in the context of CCs and mBRCs worldwide.

The field of veterinary diagnostic imaging is undergoing significant transformation with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. This manuscript provides an overview of the current state and future prospects of AI in veterinary diagnostic imaging. The manuscript delves into various applications of AI across different imaging modalities, such as radiology, ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Examples of AI applications in each modality are provided, ranging from orthopaedics to internal medicine, cardiology, and more. Notable studies are discussed, demonstrating AI's potential for improved accuracy in detecting and classifying various abnormalities. The ethical considerations of using AI in veterinary diagnostics are also explored, highlighting the need for transparent AI development, accurate training data, awareness of the limitations of AI models, and the importance of maintaining human expertise in the decision-making process. The manuscript underscores the significance of AI as a decision support tool rather than a replacement for human judgement. In conclusion, this comprehensive manuscript offers an assessment of the current landscape and future potential of AI in veterinary diagnostic imaging. It provides insights into the benefits and challenges of integrating AI into clinical practice while emphasizing the critical role of ethics and human expertise in ensuring the wellbeing of veterinary patients.

We investigate the constraints provided by the Euclid space observatory on the physical properties of dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) at z>~1.5 detected in wide area sub millimetre surveys with Herschel. We adopt a physical model for the high z progenitors of spheroidal galaxies, which form the bulk of the DSFGs at z>~1.5. We improve the model by combining the output of the equations of the model with a formalism for the spectral energy distribution(SED). After optimising the SED parameters to reproduce the measured infrared luminosity function and the number counts of DSFGs, we simulated a sample of DSFGs over 100 sq deg and then applied a 5 sigma detection limit of 37 mJy at 250 microns. We estimated the redshifts from the Euclid data and then fitted the Euclid and Herschel photometry with the code CIGALE to extract the physicsl parameters. We found that 100 % of the Herschel galaxies are detected in all 4 Euclid bands above 3 sigma. For 87% of the sources the accuracy on 1+z is better than 15%. The sample comprises mostly massive log(Mstar/Msun)~10.5-12.9, highly star forming, log(SFR/Msun/yr)~1.5-4, dusty, log(Mdust/Msun)~7.5-9.9, galaxies. The measured stellar mass have a dispersion of 0.19 dex around the true value, thus showing that Euclid will provide reliable stellar mass estimates for the majority of the bright DSFGs at z>~1.5 detected by Herschel. Background: The prevalence of hypothyroidism among older patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and its association with mortality is unclear. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of hypothyroidism in older COVID-19 inpatients and verify if this comorbidity is associated with a specific pattern of onset symptoms and a worse prognosis. Methods: COVID-19 inpatients aged ≥ 60 years, participating in the GeroCovid acute wards cohort, were included. The history of hypothyroidism was derived from medical records and the use of thyroid hormones. Sociodemographic data, comorbidities, symptoms/signs at the disease onset and inflammatory markers at ward admission were compared between people with vs without history of hypothyroidism. The association between hypothyroidism and in-hospital mortality was tested through Cox regression. Results: Of the 1245 patients included, 8.5% had a history of hypothyroidism. These patients were more likely to present arterial hypertension and obesity compared with those without an history of hypothyroidism. Concerning COVID-19 clinical presentation, patients with hypothyroidism had less frequently low oxygen saturation and anorexia but reported muscle pain and loss of smell more commonly than those without hypothyroidism. Among the inflammatory markers, patients with hypothyroidism had higher lymphocytes values. At Cox regression, hypothyroidism was associated with reduced in-hospital mortality only in the univariable model (HR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.45–0.96, p = 0.03); conversely, no significant result were observed after adjusting for potential confounders (HR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.47–1.03, p = 0.07). Conclusions: Hypothyroidism does not seem to substantially influence the prognosis of COVID-19 in older people, although it may be associated with peculiar clinical and biochemical features at the disease onset.

Il presente capitolo del Rapporto ISMU tratta della risposta europea ai flussi di migrazione umanitaria prodotti dall’invasione russa dell’Ucraina, comparandola all’atteggiamento tenuto da autorità nazionali e sovranazionali nei confronti dei richiedenti asilo in arrivo lungo le “tradizionali” rotte migratorie. Il capitolo evidenzia come tale differenziazione sia legata a un’emergente – e in un certo senso paradossale – concezione “comunitarista” e non “civile” dell’Europa e dell’Unione europea (UE). Per avanzare tale argomentazione, verranno presi in considerazione i temi dell’identità europea e della diffusione delle ideologie identitarie nei sistemi politici europei, e in particolare il ruolo della guerra nei processi di definizione di tale problematica identità.

Over the last 20 years, the European Union (EU) has promoted democracy and the rule of law in its neighbourhood, failing to achieve significant results. While the causes of this failure have been openly debated in the literature, the EU has recently changed its foreign policy focus from democracy promotion to resilience, a paradigm shift that is even more apparent both in the European Global Strategy (2016) and in the Strategic Compass (2022). Using a preliminary document analysis, we show that the European Neighbourhood Policy can be better understood through the concept of positive peace, arguing that the literature in this field may shed new light not only on the ENP itself, but also on the reasons for its failure. More specifically, we argue that – far from being interested only in the democratization of its neighbours – the ENP aimed at spreading the European zone of peace (i.e., human development and security community); not only this strategy was too ambitious, but it incurred also in some trade-offs that the EU could hardly manage. In doing so, we propose a distinction between policy instruments aimed at fostering positive peace, and desirable outcomes that those instruments should achieve.

Hospitalization for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection confers an almost five-fold higher risk of post-discharge, all-cause mortality compared to controls from the general population. A negative impact on the functional autonomy of older patients, especially in cases of severe disease and prolonged hospitalization, has been recently described. However, little is known about the determinants of cause-specific mortality and loss of independence (LOI) in the activities of daily living (ADL) following COVID-19 hospitalization. Thus, the current prospective, multicenter study is aimed at identifying the determinants of post-discharge cause-specific mortality and the loss of autonomy in at least one ADL function. Older patients hospitalized for a SARS-CoV-2 infection were consecutively enrolled in an e-Registry from 1 March 2020, until 31 December 2020. After at least six months from discharge, patients were extensively re-evaluated according to a common protocol at the outpatient clinic of eight tertiary care Italian hospitals. Of 193 patients [109 (56.4%) men, mean age 79.9 +/- 9.1 years], 43 (22.3%) died during follow-up. The most common causes of death were cardiovascular diseases (46.0%), respiratory failure (26.5%), and gastrointestinal and genitourinary diseases (8.8% each). Pre-morbid ADLs qualified as an independent mortality risk factor [adjusted HR 0.77 (95%CI: 0.63-0.95)]. Of 132 patients, 28 (21.2%) lost their independence in at least one ADL. The adjusted risk of LOI declined with a lower frailty degree [aOR 0.03 (95%CI: 0.01-0.32)]. In conclusion, at long-term follow-up after hospitalization for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, more than 40% of older patients died or experienced a loss of functional independence compared to their pre-morbid condition. Given its high prevalence, the loss of functional independence after hospitalization for COVID-19 could be reasonably included among the features of the "Long COVID-19 syndrome" of older patients.

This paper reports the proceedings of a meeting convened by the Research Group on Thoracic Ultrasound in Older People of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, to discuss the current state-of-the-art of clinical research in the field of geriatric thoracic ultrasound and identify unmet research needs and potential areas of development. In the last decade, point-of-care thoracic ultrasound has entered clinical practice for diagnosis and management of several respiratory illnesses, such as bacterial and viral pneumonia, pleural effusion, acute heart failure, and pneumothorax, especially in the emergency–urgency setting. Very few studies, however, have been specifically focused on older patients with frailty and multi-morbidity, who frequently exhibit complex clinical pictures needing multidimensional evaluation. At the present state of knowledge, there is still uncertainty on the best requirements of ultrasound equipment, methodology of examination, and reporting needed to optimize the advantages of thoracic ultrasound implementation in the care of geriatric patients. Other issues regard differential diagnosis between bacterial and aspiration pneumonia, objective grading of interstitial syndrome severity, quantification and monitoring of pleural effusions and solid pleural lesions, significance of ultrasonographic assessment of post-COVID-19 sequelae, and prognostic value of assessment of diaphragmatic thickness and motility. Finally, application of remote ultrasound diagnostics in the community and nursing home setting is still poorly investigated by the current literature. Overall, the presence of several open questions on geriatric applications of thoracic ultrasound represents a strong call to implement clinical research in this field.

The present systematic review and meta-analysis appraises the evidence of different formulations/dosages of selegiline across different psychiatric conditions. We inquired PubMed/MEDLINE/Cochrane-Central/WHO-ICTRP/Clarivate-WebOfScience and the Chinese-Electronic-Journal Database from inception to 10/26/2022 for selegiline trials involving psychiatric patients. Random-effects meta-analyses assessed heterogeneity, publication/risk biases, and confidence in the evidence, followed by sensitivity, subgroup, and meta-regression analyses. Co-primary outcomes were: changes in symptom score (standardized mean difference=SMD) and author-defined response (risk ratios=RRs). RRs of adverse events and all-cause discontinuation were secondary and acceptability outcomes, respectively. Systematic-review included 42 studies; meta-analysis, 23. Selegiline outperformed placebo in depressive symptom reduction (SMD=-0.96, 95%C.I.=-1.78, -0.14, k = 10, n = 1,308), depression (RR=1.61, 95%C.I.=1.20, 2.15, k = 9, n = 1,238) and atypical-depression response (RR=2.23, 95%C.I.=1.35, 3.68, k = 3, n = 136). Selegiline failed to outperform the placebo in negative (k = 4) or positive symptoms of schizophrenia (k = 4), attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms reduction (k = 2), and smoking abstinence rate (k = 4). Spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a range of spin-charge interconversion phenomena in nonmagnetic systems where certain spatial symmetries are reduced or absent. Chirality-induced spin-selectivity (CISS), a term that generically refers to a spin-dependent electron transfer in nonmagnetic chiral systems, is one such case, appearing in a variety of seemingly unrelated situations ranging from inorganic materials to molecular devices. In particular, the origin of CISS in molecular junctions is a matter of an intense current debate. Here, we derive a set of geometrical conditions for this effect to appear, hinting at the fundamental role of symmetries beyond otherwise relevant quantitative issues. Our approach, which draws on the use of point-group symmetries within the scattering formalism for transport, shows that electrode symmetries are as important as those of the molecule when it comes to the emergence of a spin-polarization and, by extension, to the possible appearance of CISS. It turns out that standalone metallic nanocontacts can exhibit spin-polarization when relative rotations which reduce the symmetry are introduced. As a corollary, molecular junctions with achiral molecules can also exhibit spin-polarization along the direction of transport, provided that the whole junction is chiral in a specific way. This formalism also allows the prediction of qualitative changes of the spin-polarization upon substitution of a chiral molecule in the junction with its enantiomeric partner. Quantum transport calculations based on density functional theory corroborate all of our predictions and provide further quantitative insight within the single-particle framework.

In this paper we extend the Tiered Radio Extragalactic Continuum Simulation (T-RECS) to include HI emission. The HI T-RECS model is based on the most recent HI mass function estimates, combined with prescriptions to convert HI mass to total integrated HI flux. It further models source size, morphology and kinematics, including rotational velocity and HI line width. The continuum T-RECS model is updated to improve the agreement with deeper number counts available at 150\,MHz. The model for star-forming galaxies (SFGs) is also modified according to the most recent indications of a star formation rate (SFR)--radio luminosity relation, which depends primarily on stellar mass rather than redshift. We further introduce prescriptions to associate an HI mass to the T-RECS radio continuum SFG and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) populations. This gives us a way to meaningfully associate counterparts between HI and continuum catalogues, thus building HI $\times$ continuum simulated observations. Clustering properties of the sources in both HI and continuum are reproduced by associating the galaxies to dark matter haloes of a cosmological simulation. We deliver a set of mock catalogues, as well as the code to produce them, which can be used for simulating observations and predicting results from radio surveys with existing and forthcoming radio facilities, such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We analyse the molecular and atomic emission lines of 71 bright Herschel-selected galaxies between redshifts 1.4 to 4.6 detected by the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array. These lines include a total of 156 CO, [C I], and H2O emission lines. For 46 galaxies, we detect two transitions of CO lines, and for these galaxies we find gas properties similar to those of other dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) samples. A comparison to photo-dissociation models suggests that most of Herschel-selected galaxies have similar interstellar medium conditions as local infrared-luminous galaxies and high-redshift DSFGs, although with denser gas and more intense far-ultraviolet radiation fields than normal star-forming galaxies. The line luminosities agree with the luminosity scaling relations across five orders of magnitude, although the star-formation and gas surface density distributions (i.e., Schmidt-Kennicutt relation) suggest a different star-formation phase in our galaxies (and other DSFGs) compared to local and low-redshift gas-rich, normal star-forming systems. The gas-to-dust ratios of these galaxies are similar to Milky Way values, with no apparent redshift evolution. Four of 46 sources appear to have CO line ratios in excess of the expected maximum (thermalized) profile, suggesting a rare phase in the evolution of DSFGs. Finally, we create a deep stacked spectrum over a wide rest-frame frequency (220-890 GHz) that reveals faint transitions from HCN and CH, in line with previous stacking experiments., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal. The UNICittà project, funded by the Carisbo Foundation as part of the Rediscovering The City 2019 call, focuses on the collection and dissemination of a corpus of texts on tangible and intangible heritage belonging to the University of Bologna. This multilingual corpus contains texts written in English, French, Russian and Spanish by foreign travellers of the past which have been collected in order to be made available to organisations and institutions for the creation of tourism promotion resources on the University's heritage. The main goal of the corpus is thus to enhance knowledge and access to such artistic and historical heritage that remains unknown to the wide public and international tourists. This project is part of the activities of the Multilingual Lexicon Research Unit operating at CeSLiC research center (https://site.unibo.it/ceslic/it) in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

We present 101 and 151 GHz ALMA continuum images for 85 fields selected from Herschel observations that have 500 micron flux densities >80 mJy and 250-500 micron colours consistent with z > 2, most of which are expected to be gravitationally lensed or hyperluminous infrared galaxies. Approximately half of the Herschel 500 micron sources were resolved into multiple ALMA sources, but 11 of the 15 brightest 500 micron Herschel sources correspond to individual ALMA sources. For the 37 fields containing either a single source with a spectroscopic redshift or two sources with the same spectroscopic redshift, we examined the colour temperatures and dust emissivity indices. The colour temperatures only vary weakly with redshift and are statistically consistent with no redshift-dependent temperature variations, which generally corresponds to results from other samples selected in far-infrared, submillimetre, or millimetre bands but not to results from samples selected in optical or near-infrared bands. The dust emissivity indices, with very few exceptions, are largely consistent with a value of 2. We also compared spectroscopic redshifts to photometric redshifts based on spectral energy distribution templates designed for infrared-bright high-redshift galaxies. While the templates systematically underestimate the redshifts by ~15%, the inclusion of ALMA data decreases the scatter in the predicted redshifts by a factor of ~2, illustrating the potential usefulness of these millimetre data for estimating photometric redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We have carried out HST snapshot observations at 1.1 $\mu$m of 281 candidate strongly lensed galaxies identified in the wide-area extragalactic surveys conducted with the Herschel space observatory. Our candidates comprise systems with flux densities at $500\,\mu$m$ S_{500}\geq 80$ mJy. We model and subtract the surface brightness distribution for 130 systems, where we identify a candidate for the foreground lens candidate. After combining visual inspection, archival high-resolution observations, and lens subtraction, we divide the systems into different classes according to their lensing likelihood. We confirm 65 systems to be lensed. Of these, 30 are new discoveries. We successfully perform lens modelling and source reconstruction on 23 systems, where the foreground lenses are isolated galaxies and the background sources are detected in the HST images. All the systems are successfully modelled as a singular isothermal ellipsoid. The Einstein radii of the lenses and the magnifications of the background sources are consistent with previous studies. However, the background source circularised radii (between 0.34 kpc and 1.30 kpc) are $\sim$3 times smaller than the ones measured in the sub-mm/mm for a similarly selected and partially overlapping sample. We compare our lenses with those in the SLACS survey, confirming that our lens-independent selection is more effective at picking up fainter and diffuse galaxies and group lenses. This sample represents the first step towards characterising the near-IR properties and stellar masses of the gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies., Comment: 57 pages, 18 figures, 11 tables. For decades, questions about whether Italy can be deemed a paese normale (normal country) have concerned policymakers and analysts. The issue goes beyond every nation’s inherent tendency to think of – and actively (re)produce – itself as a unicum. The yearning for a way to finally be regarded as “normal” has been kept alive by a nagging concern about being left behind on the path towards progress that fellow European and non-European countries have seemed to walk down with comparative ease (Samuels 2003). At the same time, based on their analytical perspective and the specific aspect under scrutiny, a number of observers have come to different conclusions about whether Italy should or should not be regarded as a normal country (Andrews 2005; Newell 2010; Valbruzzi 2013). Finding traits of (ab)normality does not entail that the country has always been in every respect normal or otherwise – and neither that its status cannot more or less suddenly change, as appears to be the case with Italy over the last few years. In fact, we will identify a number of distinctive historical circumstances and structural features that have made Italy a noteworthy case as far as relationships between security and democracy are concerned.

The article aims at assessing how and to what extent the Trump administration has affected trade relations between the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). In order to do so, and taking into account the general framing of virtually every Trump-related political issue in terms of a “break” from business as usual, the article identifies the Trump administration’s consistencies with and deviations from the more traditional course of America’s trade policy, including the setting off of infamous “trade wars”. After providing an insight of the US and the US trade policy governance system, the article continues pointing out the regulatory divergence between US and the EU as a relatively overlooked yet critical aspect of their mutual trade relationship – one where the effects of the Trump administration can be argued to be especially significant, both in economic and political terms. Finally, regulatory divergence is further explored focusing on the different main rationales – science-based evidence and precautionary principle – underpinning US and the EU respective systems of protection against the risks connected to goods and services’ production and exchange.

A tal !ine, il primo paragrafo presenta i nessi fra il rischio esistenziale per l’UE costituito dalla pandemia e quello che molti ritengono venga tuttora posto dai !lussi migratori; il secondo paragrafo offre una visione d’insieme della struttura istituzionale e normativa su cui poggia il sistema di governance della politica della migrazione e dell’asilo dell’UE; infine, la terza parte analizza sinteticamente – sempre in un’ottica principalmente politologica – i limiti e le prospettive che caratterizzano il Nuovo Patto sulla migrazione e l’asilo (per ulteriori analisi e diverse prospettive, cfr. i capitoli 11 e 12 in questo Rapporto).

Il capitolo individua come principale discontinuità nelle relazioni fra Unione europea e Stati Uniti durante l’amministrazione Trump l’inusuale tipo di diplomazia pubblica con-dotta dal Presidente, caratterizzata dalla riduzione della comunicazione diretta ai pubblici – sia quelli esteri sia quello interno – alla medesima dialettica conflittuale spesso ricondotta alla categoria alquanto indeterminata di “populismo”. L’applicazione dell’approccio transazionista di Karl W. Deutsch all’ecologia dei media che sottende l’attuale comunità di sicurezza nordatlantica – caratterizzata dalla presenza delle nuove tecnologie della comunicazione – permette d’individuare nelle “logiche di comunicazione populista” il fattore che consente di comprendere il modo in cui Donald Trump ha partecipato all’affermazione di forze ostili ai processi d’integrazione inter-, trans- e sovranazionale che hanno garantito condizioni di pace e cooperazione dalla fine della Seconda guerra mondiale.

The chapter aims at understanding whether the ongoing transformation of the EU Migration System of Governance may be conducive to the fulfilment of the expectations of Member States—Germany included—third states, and EU institutions—with regard to Germany’s ability (or lack thereof) to orient the EU’s identity and conduct as an international actor complying with and advancing global justice (Harnish 2011). To this end, the following section identifies the main trajectories of Germany’s immigration and asylum policy, accounting for the country’s shift from a restrictive to a selectively liberal approach towards voluntary and forced migrations.2 The third section examines the intergovernmentalization of the EUMSG and the allegedly leading role played in it by Germany. The final section examines Germany’s compliance with the above-mentioned justice claims, and whether and how the country’s position within a transforming EUMSG have helped create and behave according to the normative orientations of the EU as an international actor.

This chapter accounts for the UK’s participation in the EU Migration System of Governance by providing an overview of the historical development of British immigration policy in order to identify some long-term trends. We then proceed to identifying the main features of the UK’s migration policy, and conclude with an assessment of the UK’s migration policy through the lenses of global justice.

We have obtained robust redshift measurements for all sources using the 12-m Array and an efficient tuning of ALMA to optimise its use as a redshift hunter, with 73 per cent of the sources having a robust redshift identification. Nine of these redshift identifications also rely on observations from the Atacama Compact Array. The spectroscopic redshifts span a range $1.41

We investigate the radio-far infrared (FIR) correlation for a sample of $28$ bright high-redshift ($1 \lesssim z \lesssim 4$) star-forming galaxies selected in the FIR from the Herschel-ATLAS fields as candidates to be strongly gravitationally lensed. The radio information comes either from high sensitivity dedicated ATCA observations at $2.1$ GHz or from cross-matches with the FIRST survey at $1.4$ GHz. By taking advantage of source brightness possibly enhanced by lensing magnification, we identify a weak evolution with redshift out to $z\lesssim 4$ of the FIR-to-radio luminosity ratio $q_{\rm FIR}$. We also find that the $q_{\rm FIR}$ parameter as a function of the radio power $L_{1.4\,\rm GHz}$ displays a clear decreasing trend, similarly to what is observed for optically/radio selected lensed quasars found in literature, yet covering a complementary region in the $q_{\rm FIR}-L_{1.4\,\rm GHz}$ diagram. We interpret such a behavior in the framework of an in-situ galaxy formation scenario, as a result of the transition from an early dust-obscured star-forming phase (mainly pinpointed by our FIR selection) to a late radio-loud quasar phase (preferentially sampled by the optical/radio selection)., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. In the particular case of metal-azurin-metal junctions, experimental measurements have revealed extremely efficient electron transport over large distances, showing conductance values which are higher than certain conjugated molecules of similar lengths. Moreover, the electrical current has often been found to be temperature-independent, which has been used as an evidence of coherent transport or quantum tunneling. Interesting effects have been observed, moreover, upon insertion of single amino-acid mutations. In spite of a huge amount of work, the exact mechanism for the charge flow through these systems is still under debate. In this review, we will revise the recent advances made in the electron-transport measurements of azurin-based junctions as well as the corresponding theoretical modelling. Hospitalization for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection confers an almost five-fold higher risk of post-discharge, all-cause mortality compared to controls from the general population. A negative impact on the functional autonomy of older patients, especially in cases of severe disease and prolonged hospitalization, has been recently described. However, little is known about the determinants of cause-specific mortality and loss of independence (LOI) in the activities of daily living (ADL) following COVID-19 hospitalization. Thus, the current prospective, multicenter study is aimed at identifying the determinants of post-discharge cause-specific mortality and the loss of autonomy in at least one ADL function. Older patients hospitalized for a SARS-CoV-2 infection were consecutively enrolled in an e-Registry from 1 March 2020, until 31 December 2020. After at least six months from discharge, patients were extensively re-evaluated according to a common protocol at the outpatient clinic of eight tertiary care Italian hospitals. Of 193 patients [109 (56.4%) men, mean age 79.9 ± 9.1 years], 43 (22.3%) died during follow-up. The most common causes of death were cardiovascular diseases (46.0%), respiratory failure (26.5%), and gastrointestinal and genitourinary diseases (8.8% each). Pre-morbid ADLs qualified as an independent mortality risk factor [adjusted HR 0.77 (95%CI: 0.63–0.95)]. Of 132 patients, 28 (21.2%) lost their independence in at least one ADL. The adjusted risk of LOI declined with a lower frailty degree [aOR 0.03 (95%CI: 0.01–0.32)]. In conclusion, at long-term follow-up after hospitalization for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, more than 40% of older patients died or experienced a loss of functional independence compared to their pre-morbid condition. Given its high prevalence, the loss of functional independence after hospitalization for COVID-19 could be reasonably included among the features of the “Long COVID-19 syndrome” of older patients.

We present modelling of ∼0.1 arcsec resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array imaging of seven strong gravitationally lensed galaxies detected by the Herschel Space Observatory. Four of these systems are galaxy-galaxy strong lenses, with the remaining three being group-scale lenses. Through careful modelling of visibilities, we infer the mass profiles of the lensing galaxies and by determining the magnification factors, we investigate the intrinsic properties and morphologies of the lensed sub-millimetre sources. We find that these sub-millimetre sources all have ratios of star formation rate to dust mass that are consistent with, or in excess of, the mean ratio for high-redshift sub-millimetre galaxies and low redshift ultra-luminous infrared galaxies. Reconstructions of the background sources reveal that the majority of our sample display disturbed morphologies. The majority of our lens models have mass density slopes close to isothermal, but some systems show significant differences.

Giuseppe Bianchini trained within the Sienese School of Forensic Medicine and immediately distinguished himself for his innovative approach to the discipline, making very important use of biochemistry, haematology, histopathology, and physiology. During his long career as a scholar and professor of forensic medicine, an important part of his research was the study of the ‘biology of the corpse’, for which he was inspired by the presence of fungi on cadaveric material. Indeed, Bianchini considered the study of fungi, which was completely ignored at the time, to be of particular interest both in terms of the chemistry of the corpse and in determining the chronology of death. He was the first in Italy to attempt to identify and describe a mycological biota in the different states of decomposition of the corpse.

The deliverable reports on the annotation and interrogation of the Polifonia Textual Corpus, the plurilingual diachronic corpus focused on Musical Heritage (MH) covering Italian, English, French, Spanish and Dutch. Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques were used to process the corpus and produce automatic morphosyntactic, semantic and MH-specific annotations. Custom APIs have been developed and released to enable domain experts, scholars and music professionals to leverage the annotations produced to perform advanced structured queries on the corpus. The available interrogation capabilities overcome the basic keyword-based search, offering the possibility of querying the corpus by taking advantage of the advanced semantic and MH-specific information encoded in the annotation.
