This work presents a fully data-driven, black-box pipeline to obtain an optimal control policy for a multi-loop building control problem based on historical building and weather data, thus without the need for complex physics-based modelling. We demonstrate the method for joint control of room temperature and bidirectional EV charging to maximize the occupant thermal comfort and energy savings while leaving enough energy in the EV battery for the next trip. We modelled the room temperature with a recurrent neural network and EV charging with a piece-wise linear function. Using these models as a simulation environment, we applied a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to obtain an optimal control policy. The learnt policy achieves on average 17% energy savings over the heating season and 19% better comfort satisfaction than a standard RB room temperature controller. When a bidirectional EV is additionally connected and a two-tariff electricity pricing is applied, the MIMO DRL policy successfully leverages the battery and decreases the overall cost of electricity compared to two standard RB controllers, one controlling the room temperature and another controlling the bidirectional EV (dis-)charging. Finally, we demonstrate a successful transfer of the learnt DRL policy from simulation onto a real building, the DFAB HOUSE at Empa Duebendorf in Switzerland, achieving up to 30% energy savings while maintaining similar comfort levels compared to a conventional RB room temperature controller over three weeks during the heating season., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables

To enable wide spread dissemination of sensors in cost-critical applications and resource poor settings, methods to implement sensor chips using low-cost materials and mass-manufacturing methods are developed. In this paper we demonstrate that disposable polymeric integrated Young interferometer (YI) sensor chips, implemented on roll-to-roll mass-manufactured waveguides, are applicable for analyte specific sensing of small molecules and for multi-analyte detection of biomolecules. For the chemical sensing of small molecules, a sensor chip was functionalized with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). We demonstrate that the MIP receptor layer is compatible with a polymer-based evanescent wave sensor for direct refractive index sensing. For multi-analyte detection of biomolecules, antibody-based receptor layers were patterned by inkjet printing onto the sensor surface demonstrating the applicability of the method with integrated YI chips. Demonstration of the analyte specific chemical- and biosensing with disposable polymeric YI sensor chips opens new possibilities to implement low-cost (bio)chemical sensors.

Résumé :Introduction : La mitoxantrone est un anthracénédione cytostatique aux ef¬fets immunosuppresseurs et -modulateurs qui est administré entre autre dans les évolutions graves de la sclérose en plaques (SEP). Peu d'études concernant l'efficacité et la tolérance de la mitoxantrone ont été publiées. Un travail de re¬cherche statistique s'imposait en raison du nombre de patients souffrant de SEP traités par ce médicament dans le service de neurologie de l'hôpital cantonal d'Aarau.Méthode : Au total, 66 patients souffrant de SEP ont été traités par la mi¬toxantrone dans la période 07/2000-06/2007. 48 d'entre eux avaient reçu préa¬lablement une autre substance modifiant l'évolution de la maladie (« prétrai¬tement » : interféron bêta-la/b, glatirameracétate, azathioprine). Dans cette étude rétrospective, nous avons comparé l'effet de la mitoxantrone par rapport au prétraitement mentionné ci-dessus. Les paramètres appliqués concernaient l'évolution de l'expanded disability status scale (EDSS) et le nombre annuel de poussées pendant la durée du traitement. Une influence du type de SEP, de l'âge au début du traitement par la mitoxantrone, du sexe, de la durée de la théra¬pie et de la maladie ainsi que de la dose cumulative de la mitoxantrone a été recherchée. Nous avons également discuté des éventuels effets indésirables surve¬nus. Nous n'avons pas différencié les substances du prétraitement, étant donné qu'elles avaient été appliquées dans des combinaisons multiples. L'évaluation sta¬tistique a été effectuée en respectant les indications du test de Mann-Whitney ainsi que du Wilcoxon signed-rank test.Résultats : En moyenne, l'EDSS s'est stabilisée (-0,05/année chez tous les 66 patients) tandis que la maladie avait progressé de 0,32/année sous le pré¬traitement (la différence est significative avec p=0,0004 au Wilcoxon signed- rank test bilatéral).
