This paper analyzes the impact of imperfect communication channels on decentralized federated learning (D-FL) and subsequently determines the optimal number of local aggregations per training round, adapting to the network topology and imperfect channels. We start by deriving the bias of locally aggregated D-FL models under imperfect channels from the ideal global models requiring perfect channels and aggregations. The bias reveals that excessive local aggregations can accumulate communication errors and degrade convergence. Another important aspect is that we analyze a convergence upper bound of D-FL based on the bias. By minimizing the bound, the optimal number of local aggregations is identified to balance a trade-off with accumulation of communication errors in the absence of knowledge of the channels. With this knowledge, the impact of communication errors can be alleviated, allowing the convergence upper bound to decrease throughout aggregations. Experiments validate our convergence analysis and also identify the optimal number of local aggregations on two widely considered image classification tasks. It is seen that D-FL, with an optimal number of local aggregations, can outperform its potential alternatives by over 10% in training accuracy.

Body actions and head gestures are natural interfaces for interaction in virtual environments. Existing methods for in-place body action recognition often require hardware more than a head-mounted display (HMD), making body action interfaces difficult to be introduced to ordinary virtual reality (VR) users as they usually only possess an HMD. In addition, there lacks a unified solution to recognize in-place body actions and head gestures. This potentially hinders the exploration of the use of in-place body actions and head gestures for novel interaction experiences in virtual environments. We present a unified two-stream 1-D convolutional neural network (CNN) for recognition of body actions when a user performs walking-in-place (WIP) and for recognition of head gestures when a user stands still wearing only an HMD. Compared to previous approaches, our method does not require specialized hardware and/or additional tracking devices other than an HMD and can recognize a significantly larger number of body actions and head gestures than other existing methods. In total, ten in-place body actions and eight head gestures can be recognized with the proposed method, which makes this method a readily available body action interface (head gestures included) for interaction with virtual environments. We demonstrate one utility of the interface through a virtual locomotion task. Results show that the present body action interface is reliable in detecting body actions for the VR locomotion task but is physically demanding compared to a touch controller interface. Recently, there has been growing interest in investigating the effects of self-representation on user experience and perception in virtual environments. However, few studies investigated the effects of levels of body representation (full-body, lower-body and viewpoint) on locomotion experience in terms of spatial awareness, self-presence and spatial presence during virtual locomotion. Understanding such effects is essential for building new virtual locomotion systems with better locomotion experience. In the present study, we first built a walking-in-place (WIP) virtual locomotion system that can represent users using avatars at three levels (full-body, lower-body and viewpoint) and is capable of rendering walking animations during in-place walking of a user. We then conducted a virtual locomotion experiment using three levels of representation to investigate the effects of body representation on spatial awareness, self-presence and spatial presence during virtual locomotion. Experimental results showed that the full-body representation provided better virtual locomotion experience in these three factors compared to that of the lower-body representation and the viewpoint representation. The lower-body representation also provided better experience than the viewpoint representation. These results suggest that self-representation of users in virtual environments using a full-body avatar is critical for providing better locomotion experience. Generating forward-backward self-representation leg animation in virtual environments for walking-in-place (WIP) techniques is an underexplored research topic. A challenging aspect of the problem is to find an appropriate mapping from tracked vertical foot motion to natural cyclical movements of real walking. In this work, we present a kinematic approach based on animation rigging to generating real-time leg animation. Our method works by tracking vertical in-place foot movements of a user with a Kinect v2 sensor and mapping tracked foot height to inverse kinematics (IK) targets. These IK targets were aligned with an avatar's feet to guide the virtual feet to perform cyclic walking motions. We conducted a user study to evaluate our approach. Results showed that the proposed method produced compelling forward-backward leg animation during walking. Hand gesture is a new and promising interface for locomotion in virtual environments. While several previous studies have proposed different hand gestures for virtual locomotion, little is known about their differences in terms of performance and user preference in virtual locomotion tasks. In the present paper, we presented three different hand gesture interfaces and their algorithms for locomotion, which are called the Finger Distance gesture, the Finger Number gesture and the Finger Tapping gesture. These gestures were inspired by previous studies of gesture-based locomotion interfaces and are typical gestures that people are familiar with in their daily lives. Implementing these hand gesture interfaces in the present study enabled us to systematically compare the differences between these gestures. In addition, to compare the usability of these gestures to locomotion interfaces using gamepads, we also designed and implemented a gamepad interface based on the Xbox One controller. We conducted empirical studies to compare these four interfaces through two virtual locomotion tasks. A desktop setup was used instead of sharing a head-mounted display among participants due to the concern of the Covid-19 situation. Through these tasks, we assessed the performance and user preference of these interfaces on speed control and waypoints navigation. Results showed that user preference and performance of the Finger Distance gesture were close to that of the gamepad interface. The Finger Number gesture also had close performance and user preference to that of the Finger Distance gesture. Our study demonstrates that the Finger Distance gesture and the Finger Number gesture are very promising interfaces for virtual locomotion. We also discuss that the Finger Tapping gesture needs further improvements before it can be used for virtual walking.

Super-concentrated "water-in-salt" electrolytes recently spurred resurgent interest for high energy density aqueous lithium-ion batteries. Thermodynamic stabilization at high concentrations and kinetic barriers towards interfacial water electrolysis significantly expand the electrochemical stability window, facilitating high voltage aqueous cells. Herein we investigated LiTFSI/H2 O electrolyte interfacial decomposition pathways in the "water-in-salt" and "salt-in-water" regimes using synchrotron X-rays, which produce electrons at the solid/electrolyte interface to mimic reductive environments, and simultaneously probe the structure of surface films using X-ray diffraction. We observed the surface-reduction of TFSI- at super-concentration, leading to lithium fluoride interphase formation, while precipitation of the lithium hydroxide was not observed. The mechanism behind this photoelectron-induced reduction was revealed to be concentration-dependent interfacial chemistry that only occurs among closely contact ion-pairs, which constitutes the rationale behind the "water-in-salt" concept.

Gesture awareness plays a crucial role in promoting human-computer interface. Previous works either depend on customized hardware or need a priori learning of wireless signal patterns, facing downsides in terms of the privacy concern, availability and reliability. In this paper, we propose CentiTrack, the first centimeter-level passive gesture tracking system that works with only three commodityWiFi devices, without any extra hardware modifications or wearable sensors. To this end, we first identify the Channel State Information (CSI) measurement error sources in the physical layer process, and then denoise CSI by the complex ratio between adjacent antennas. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is further adopted to separate the reflected signals from noises. Benchmark experiments are conducted to verify that the phase changes of denoised CSI are proportional to the length changes of dynamic path reflected off the hand. In addition, we adopt the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm to estimate the Angle-of-Arrivals (AoAs) of dynamic paths, and then locate the initial position of hands with triangulation. We also propose a novel static componnets elimination algorithm for tracking correction by eliminating the components unrelated to motion. A prototype of CentiTrack is fully realized and evaluated in various real scenarios. Extensive experiments show that CentiTrack is superior in terms of tracking accuracy, sensing range and device cost, compared with the state-of-the-arts.

Although ternary solar cells (TSCs) offer a cost-effective prospect to expand the absorption bandwidth of organic solar cells, only few TSCs have succeeded in surpassing the performance of binary solar cells (BSCs) primarily due to the complicated morphology of the ternary blends. Here, the key factors that create and limit the morphology and performance of the TSCs are elucidated. The origin of morphology formation is explored and the role of kinetic factors is investigated. The results reveal that the morphology of TSC blends considered in this study are characterized with either a single length-scale or two length-scale features depending on the composition of the photoactive polymers in the blend. This asymmetric morphology development reveals that TSC blend morphology critically depends on material compatibility and polymer solubility. Most interestingly, the fill factor (FF) of TSCs is found to linearly correlate with the relative standard deviation of the fullerene distribution at small lengths. This is the first time that such a correlation has been shown for ternary systems. The criteria that uniform sized and highly pure amorphous domains are accomplished through the correct kinetic path to obtain a high FF for TSCs are specifically elucidated. We evaluated the risk of malignancies in patients with constipation requiring hospitalization.Methods: Using Danish medical registries, we calculated cumulative incidences and standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for cancer. SIRs were computed as the observed number of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and selected non-GI cancers in patients with constipation compared with the expected number based on national incidence rates by sex, age, and calendar year (1978–2013).Results: We identified 1,75,901 patients with constipation (59% females, median age 54 years). The cumulative incidences of GI cancers and non-GI cancers after 15 years of follow-up were 2.5% and 2.6%, respectively. During the first year of follow-up, the SIR for any GI cancer was 5.0 (95% confidence interval (CI): 4.8–5.3), driven by colon and pancreas cancers and higher for younger age groups. Beyond 1 year of follow-up, the risk declined to near unity for colorectal cancer. The risk of other GI cancers (including cancers of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, and pancreas) remained moderately increased (overall SIR =1.3, 95% CI: 1.2–1.4). Except for ovarian cancer (SIR =7.3, 95% CI: 6.3–8.4), the risk of non-GI cancers was only slightly increased during the first year of follow-up and declined to unity thereafter.Conclusions: Patients with constipation had increased short-term risk of a diagnosis of GI cancer. Although it is known that molecular interactions govern morphology formation and purity of mixed domains of conjugated polymer donors and small-molecule acceptors, and thus largely control the achievable performance of organic solar cells, quantifying interaction-function relations has remained elusive. Here, we first determine the temperature-dependent effective amorphous-amorphous interaction parameter, χ aa(T), by mapping out the phase diagram of a model amorphous polymer:fullerene material system. We then establish a quantitative 'constant-kink-saturation' relation between χ aa and the fill factor in organic solar cells that is verified in detail in a model system and delineated across numerous high- and low-performing materials systems, including fullerene and non-fullerene acceptors. Our experimental and computational data reveal that a high fill factor is obtained only when χ aa is large enough to lead to strong phase separation. Our work outlines a basis for using various miscibility tests and future simulation methods that will significantly reduce or eliminate trial-and-error approaches to material synthesis and device fabrication of functional semiconducting blends and organic blends in general. © 2018 The Author(s).

There are some successful attempts to reduce the V-loss by decreasing the energy offsets between the donor and acceptor materials, and the OSC community has demonstrated efficient systems with either small highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) offset or negligible lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) offset between donors and acceptors. However, efficient OSCs based on a donor/acceptor system with both small HOMO and LUMO offsets have not been demonstrated simultaneously. In this work, an efficient nonfullerene OSC is reported based on a donor polymer named PffBT2T-TT and a small-molecular acceptor (O-IDTBR), which have identical bandgaps and close energy levels. The Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy external quantum efficiency (FTPS-EQE) spectrum of the blend overlaps with those of neat PffBT2T-TT and O-IDTBR, indicating the small driving forces for both hole and electron transfer. Meanwhile, the OSCs exhibit a high electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE(EL)) of approximate to 1 x 10(-4), which leads to a significantly minimized nonradiative V-loss of 0.24 V. The device performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is strongly dependent on the blend morphology. One of the strategies for improving PSC performance is side-chain engineering, which plays an important role in controlling the aggregation properties of the polymers and thus the domain crystallinity/purity of the donor–acceptor blends. In particular, for a family of high-performance donor polymers with strong temperature-dependent aggregation properties, the device performances are very sensitive to the size of alkyl chains, and the best device performance can only be achieved with an optimized odd-numbered alkyl chain. However, the synthetic route of odd-numbered alkyl chains is costly and complicated, which makes it difficult for large-scale synthesis. Here, this study presents a facile method to optimize the aggregation properties and blend morphology by employing donor polymers with a mixture of two even-numbered, randomly distributed alkyl chains. In a model polymer system, this study suggests that the structural and electronic properties of the random polymers comprising a mixture of 2-octyldodecyl and 2-decyltetradecyl alkyl chains can be systematically tuned by varying the mixing ratio, and a high power conversion efficiency (11.1%) can be achieved. It is still a great challenge to fabricate conjugated polymer monolayer field-effect transistors (PoM-FETs) due to intricate crystallization and film formation of conjugated polymers. Here we demonstrate PoM-FETs based on a single monolayer of a conjugated polymer. The resulting PoM-FETs are highly reproducible and exhibit charge carrier mobilities reaching 3 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). The high performance is attributed to the strong interactions of the polymer chains present already in solution leading to pronounced edge-on packing and well-defined microstructure in the monolayer. The high reproducibility enables the integration of discrete unipolar PoM-FETs into inverters and ring oscillators. Real logic functionality has been demonstrated by constructing a 15-bit code generator in which hundreds of self-assembled PoM-FETs are addressed simultaneously. Our results provide the state-of-the-art example of integrated circuits based on a conjugated polymer monolayer, opening prospective pathways for bottom-up organic electronics.

Polymer solar cells (PSCs) continue to be a promising low-cost and lead-free photovoltaic technology. Of critical importance to PSCs is understanding and manipulating the composition of the amorphous mixed phase, which is governed by the thermodynamic molecular interactions of the polymer donor and acceptor molecules and the kinetics of the casting process. This progress report clarifies and defines nomenclature relating to miscibility and its relevance and implications to PSC devices in light of new developments. Utilizing a scanning transmission X-ray microscopy method, the temperature dependences of "molecular miscibility" in the presence of fullerene crystals, now referred to liquidus miscibility, are presented for a number of representative blends. An emphasis is placed on relating the amorphous miscibility of high-efficiency PSC blends at a given processing temperature with their actual device performance and stability. It is shown and argued that a system with an amorphous miscibility close to percolation exhibits the most stable morphology. Furthermore, an approach is outlined to convert liquidus miscibility to an effective Flory-Huggins interaction parameter . Crucially, determination of temperature-dependent amorphous miscibility paves a way to rationally optimize the stability and mixing behaviors of PSCs at actual processing and operating temperatures.

The bulk-heterojunction blend of an electron donor and an electron acceptor material is the key component in a solution-processed organic photovoltaic device. In the past decades, a p-type conjugated polymer and an n-type fullerene derivative have been the most commonly used electron donor and electron acceptor, respectively. While most advances of the device performance come from the design of new polymer donors, fullerene derivatives have almost been exclusively used as electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics. Recently, nonfullerene acceptor materials, particularly small molecules and oligomers, have emerged as a promising alternative to replace fullerene derivatives. Compared to fullerenes, these new acceptors are generally synthesized from diversified, low-cost routes based on building block materials with extraordinary chemical, thermal, and photostability. The facile functionalization of these molecules affords excellent tunability to their optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. Within the past five years, there have been over 100 nonfullerene acceptor molecules synthesized, and the power conversion efficiency of nonfullerene organic solar cells has increased dramatically, from ∼2% in 2012 to >13% in 2017. This review summarizes this progress, aiming to describe the molecular design strategy, to provide insight into the structure–property relationship, and to highlight the challenges the field is facing, with emphasis placed on most recent nonfullerene acceptors that demonstrated top-of-the-line photovoltaic performances. We also provide perspectives from a device point of view, wherein topics including ternary blend device, multijunction device, device stability, active layer morphology, and device physics are discussed.

This review summarizes this progress, aiming to describe the molecular design strategy, to provide insight into the structure–property relationship, and to highlight the challenges the field is facing, with emphasis placed on most recent nonfullerene acceptors that demonstrated top-of-the-line photovoltaic performances. We also provide perspectives from a device point of view, wherein topics including ternary blend device, multijunction device, device stability, active layer morphology, and device physics are discussed.

However, efficient OSCs based on a donor/acceptor system with both small HOMO and LUMO offsets have not been demonstrated simultaneously. In this work, an efficient nonfullerene OSC is reported based on a donor polymer named PffBT2T-TT and a small-molecular acceptor (O-IDTBR), which have identical bandgaps and close energy levels. The Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy external quantum efficiency (FTPS-EQE) spectrum of the blend overlaps with those of neat PffBT2T-TT and O-IDTBR, indicating the small driving forces for both hole and electron transfer. Meanwhile, the OSCs exhibit a high electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQEEL) of ≈1 × 10−4, which leads to a significantly minimized nonradiative Vloss of 0.24 V. Despite the small driving forces and a low Vloss, a maximum EQE of 67% and a high power conversion efficiency of 10.4% can still be achieved.

The device performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is strongly dependent on the blend morphology. One of the strategies for improving PSC performance is side-chain engineering, which plays an important role in controlling the aggregation properties of the polymers and thus the domain crystallinity/purity of the donor–acceptor blends. In particular, for a family of high-performance donor polymers with strong temperature-dependent aggregation properties, the device performances are very sensitive to the size of alkyl chains, and the best device performance can only be achieved with an optimized odd-numbered alkyl chain. However, the synthetic route of odd-numbered alkyl chains is costly and complicated, which makes it difficult for large-scale synthesis. Here, this study presents a facile method to optimize the aggregation properties and blend morphology by employing donor polymers with a mixture of two even-numbered, randomly distributed alkyl chains. In a model polymer system, this study suggests that the structural and electronic properties of the random polymers comprising a mixture of 2-octyldodecyl and 2-decyltetradecyl alkyl chains can be systematically tuned by varying the mixing ratio, and a high power conversion efficiency (11.1%) can be achieved. Of critical importance to PSCs is understanding and manipulating the composition of the amorphous mixed phase, which is governed by the thermodynamic molecular interactions of the polymer donor and acceptor molecules and the kinetics of the casting process. This progress report clarifies and defines nomenclature relating to miscibility and its relevance and implications to PSC devices in light of new developments. Utilizing a scanning transmission X-ray microscopy method, the temperature dependences of "molecular miscibility" in the presence of fullerene crystals, now referred to liquidus miscibility, are presented for a number of representative blends. An emphasis is placed on relating the amorphous miscibility of high-efficiency PSC blends at a given processing temperature with their actual device performance and stability. It is shown and argued that a system with an amorphous miscibility close to percolation exhibits the most stable morphology. Furthermore, an approach is outlined to convert liquidus miscibility to an effective Flory-Huggins interaction parameter . Crucially, determination of temperature-dependent amorphous miscibility paves a way to rationally optimize the stability and mixing behaviors of PSCs at actual processing and operating temperatures.

Here we demonstrate PoM-FETs based on a single monolayer of a conjugated polymer. The resulting PoM-FETs are highly reproducible and exhibit charge carrier mobilities reaching 3 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). The high performance is attributed to the strong interactions of the polymer chains present already in solution leading to pronounced edge-on packing and well-defined microstructure in the monolayer. The high reproducibility enables the integration of discrete unipolar PoM-FETs into inverters and ring oscillators. Real logic functionality has been demonstrated by constructing a 15-bit code generator in which hundreds of self-assembled PoM-FETs are addressed simultaneously. Our results provide the state-of-the-art example of integrated circuits based on a conjugated polymer monolayer, opening prospective pathways for bottom-up organic electronics.

Esophageal diseases are highly prevalent and carry significant socioeconomic burden. Despite the apparently simple function of the esophagus, we still struggle to better understand its physiology and pathophysiology. The assessment of large data sets and application of multiscale mathematical organ models have gained attention as part of the Physiome Project. This has long been recognized in cardiology but has only recently gained attention for the gastrointestinal(GI) tract. The term "esophagiome" implies a holistic assessment of esophageal function, from cellular and muscle physiology to the mechanical responses that transport and mix fluid contents. These anatomical, mechanical, and physiological models underlie the development of a "virtual esophagus" modeling framework to characterize and analyze function and disease. Functional models incorporate anatomical details with sensory-motor responses, especially related to biomechanical functions such as bolus transport. Our review builds on previous reviews and focuses on assessment of detailed anatomical and geometric data using advanced imaging technology for evaluation of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), and on esophageal mechanophysiology assessed using technologies that distend the esophagus. Integration of mechanics- and physiology-based analysis is a useful characteristic of the esophagiome. Experimental data on pressures and geometric characteristics are useful for the validation of mathematical and computer models of the esophagus that may provide predictions of novel endoscopic, surgical, and pharmaceutical treatment options.

The bulk-heterojunction blend of an electron donor and an electron acceptor material is the key component in a solution-processed organic photovoltaic device. In the past decades, a p-type conjugated polymer and an n-type fullerene derivative have been the most commonly used electron donor and electron acceptor, respectively. While most advances of the device performance come from the design of new polymer donors, fullerene derivatives have almost been exclusively used as electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics. Recently, nonfullerene acceptor materials, particularly small molecules and oligomers, have emerged as a promising alternative to replace fullerene derivatives. Compared to fullerenes, these new acceptors are generally synthesized from diversified, low-cost routes based on building block materials with extraordinary chemical, thermal, and photostability. The facile functionalization of these molecules affords excellent tunability to their optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. Within the past five years, there have been over 100 nonfullerene acceptor molecules synthesized, and the power conversion efficiency of nonfullerene organic solar cells has increased dramatically, from ∼2% in 2012 to >13% in 2017. Recent research has proposed teleoperation of robotic and aerial vehicles using head motion tracked by a head-mounted display (HMD). First-person views of the vehicles are usually captured by onboard cameras and presented to users through the display panels of HMDs. This provides users with a direct, immersive and intuitive interface for viewing and control. However, a typically overlooked factor in such designs is the latency introduced by the vehicle dynamics. As head motion is coupled with visual updates in such applications, visual and control latency always exists between the issue of control commands by head movements and the visual feedback received at the completion of the attitude adjustment. This causes a discrepancy between the intended motion, the vestibular cue and the visual cue and may potentially result in simulator sickness. No research has been conducted on how various levels of visual and control latency introduced by dynamics in robots or aerial vehicles affect users' performance and the degree of simulator sickness elicited. Thus, it is uncertain how much performance is degraded by latency and whether such designs are comfortable from the perspective of users. To address these issues, we studied a prototyped scenario of a head motion controlled quadcopter using an HMD. Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) are becoming a serious contender to fullerene-based electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics, due to their structural versatility and easily tunable optical and electronic properties. However, NFA-based solar cells often have a decreased short-circuit current (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) compared to their fullerene-based counterparts. Here, we investigate the fundamental causes of this decrease in the performance of solar cells using a non-fullerene acceptor (SF-PDI2) paired with two polymer donors, FTAZ and PyCNTAZ, compared with their fullerene-based counterparts. Through a number of experimental techniques and morphological studies, we show that the SF-PDI2-based solar cells suffer from insufficient charge generation, transport, and collection when compared with the PCBM-based solar cells. The SF-PDI2-based solar cells show increased bimolecular recombination, which, together with other recombination loss mechanisms in these cells, causes a significant decrease in their Jsc and FF. Notably, the less pure domains, low electron mobility (on the order of 10−5 cm2 V−1 s−1), and imbalanced mobility (in regard to the hole mobility) further explain the low FF. On the other hand, the higher open-circuit voltage (Voc) in the SF-PDI2 devices is mainly due to the increase in the CT state energy. It is worth mentioning that the PyCNTAZ-based devices show an ultralow charge separation energy (ΔECS), close to 0 eV. Our results demonstrate that further increasing the mobility (both of electrons and holes) in these NFA-based solar cells would be a viable approach to further enhance the efficiency of these new types of solar cells, ideally, without losing the high Voc of such cells. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

A new polymer acceptor, naphthodiperylenetetraimide-vinylene (NDP-V), featuring a backbone of altenating naphthodiperylenetetraimide and vinylene units is designed and applied in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). With this polymer acceptor, a new record power-conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 8.59% has been achieved for all-PSCs. The design principle of NDP-V is to reduce the conformational disorder in the backbone of a previously developed high-performance acceptor, PDI-V, a perylenediimide-vinylene polymer. The chemical modifications result in favorable changes to the molecular packing behaviors of the acceptor and improved morphology of the donor–acceptor (PTB7-Th:NDP-V) blend, which is evidenced by the enhanced hole and electron transport abilities of the active layer. Moreover, the stronger absorption of NDP-V in the shorter-wavelength range offers a better complement to the donor. All these factors contribute to a short-circuit current density (J sc) of 17.07 mA cm−2. With a fill factor (FF) of 0.67, an average PCE of 8.48% is obtained, representing the highest value thus far reported for all-PSCs.

Head gesture is a natural means of face-to-face communication between people but the recognition of head gestures in the context of virtual reality and use of head gesture as an interface for interacting with virtual avatars and virtual environments have been rarely investigated. In the current study, we present an approach for real-time head gesture recognition on head-mounted displays using Cascaded Hidden Markov Models. We conducted two experiments to evaluate our proposed approach. In experiment 1, we trained the Cascaded Hidden Markov Models and assessed the offline classification performance using collected head motion data. In experiment 2, we characterized the real-time performance of the approach by estimating the latency to recognize a head gesture with recorded real-time classification data. Our results show that the proposed approach is effective in recognizing head gestures. The method can be integrated into a virtual reality system as a head gesture interface for interacting with virtual worlds.

Peripheral afferent nerves may be involved due to the complex regulation of gastrointestinal function by the enteric nervous system. Objective: We aimed to characterize the stimulus–response function of afferent fibers innervating the jejunum in the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) type 2 diabetic rat model. A key question is whether changes in afferent firing arise from remodeled tissue or from adaptive afferent processes. Design: Seven 32-week-old male GK rats and seven age-matched normal Wistar rats were studied. Firing from mesenteric afferent nerves was recorded in excised jejunal segments of seven GK rats and seven normal Wistar rats during ramp test, stress relaxation test, and creep test. The circumferential stress–strain, spike rate increase ratio (SRIR), and single unit firing rates were calculated for evaluation of interdependency of the mechanical stimulations and the afferent nerve discharge. Results: Elevated sensitivity to mechanical stimuli was found for diabetic nerve bundles and single unit activity (P<0.05). The stress relaxed less in the diabetic intestinal segment (P<0.05). Linear association between SRIR and the thickness of circumferential muscle layer was found at high stress levels as well as for SRIR and the glucose level. Conclusion: Altered viscoelastic properties and elevated mechanosensitivity were found in the GK rat intestine. The altered nerve signaling is related to muscle layer remodeling and glucose levels and may contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms experienced by diabetic patients. Organic solar cells have desirable properties, including low cost of materials, high-throughput roll-to-roll production, mechanical flexibility and light weight. However, all top-performance devices are at present processed using halogenated solvents, which are environmentally hazardous and would thus require expensive mitigation to contain the hazards. Attempts to process organic solar cells from non-halogenated solvents lead to inferior performance. Overcoming this hurdle, here we present a hydrocarbon-based processing system that is not only more environmentally friendly but also yields cells with power conversion efficiencies of up to 11.7%. Our processing system incorporates the synergistic effects of a hydrocarbon solvent, a novel additive, a suitable choice of polymer side chain, and strong temperature-dependent aggregation of the donor polymer. Our results not only demonstrate a method of producing active layers of organic solar cells in an environmentally friendly way, but also provide important scientific insights that will facilitate further improvement of the morphology and performance of organic solar cells.

All-polymer solar cells with 7.57% power conversion efficiency are achieved via a new perylenediimide-based polymeric acceptor. Furthermore, the device processed in ambient air without encapsulation can still reach a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.49%, which is a significant economic advantage from an industrial processing perspective. These results represent the highest PCE achieved from perylenediimide-based polymers.

A difluorobenzoxadiazole building block is synthesized and utilized to construct a conjugated polymer leading to high-performance thick-film polymer solar cells with a VOC of 0.88 V and a power conversion efficiency of 9.4%. This new building block can be used in many possible polymer structures for various organic electronic applications. © 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

To achieve efficient organic solar cells, the design of suitable donor-acceptor couples is crucially important. State-of-the-art donor polymers used in fullerene cells may not perform well when they are combined with non-fullerene acceptors, thus new donor polymers need to be developed. Here we report non-fullerene organic solar cells with efficiencies up to 10.9%, enabled by a novel donor polymer that exhibits strong temperature-dependent aggregation but with intentionally reduced polymer crystallinity due to the introduction of a less symmetric monomer unit. Our comparative study shows that an analogue polymer with a C2 symmetric monomer unit yields highly crystalline polymer films but less efficient non-fullerene cells. Based on a monomer with a mirror symmetry, our best donor polymer exhibits reduced crystallinity, yet such a polymer matches better with small molecular acceptors. This study provides important insights to the design of donor polymers for non-fullerene organic solar cells.
