Abstract: Aim: Colombia has committed to ambitious forest restoration targets which include a 1 million ha Bonn Challenge commitment and 6.47–8.31 million ha (rehabilitation and restoration, respectively) under the National Restoration Plan. Determining where and how to implement programs to achieve these targets remains a significant challenge. Location: Colombia. Methods: We adopt a multi‐objective optimisation framework for restoration planning and apply it to Colombia. We explore cost‐effective solutions that leverage the potential for assisted natural regeneration benefits while accounting for opportunity and establishment costs of restoration and maximising biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation benefits. We explore four politically relevant restoration area‐based targets (1, 6, 6.47 and 8.31 million ha) and identify minimum cost, and suites of maximum benefit and cost‐effective solutions. Results: We identify solutions that simultaneously perform well across biodiversity and carbon objectives, despite trade‐offs between these objectives. We find that cost‐effective solutions can achieve on average 91.1%, 90.8%, 90.5% and 90.1% of maximum carbon benefit and 100% of the maximum biodiversity benefit while significantly reducing costs. On average, the cost‐effective solutions reduce the cost by 87.5%, 56.8%, 59.6% and 46.2% compared to the maximum benefit solutions considering one, six, 6.47 and 8.31 million ha restoration targets, respectively. Main Conclusions: Colombia has committed to bold restoration and conservation targets, such as those under the new 2030 Convention on Biological Diversity Global Biodiversity Framework. Strategic forest restoration planning will play an important role in achieving Colombia's biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation goals. We provide quantitative evidence to inform planning for environmentally and economically sensible restoration policy and practice in the country. Our framework and results can help guide C

Abstract: Background: The extent to which health care systems have adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide necessary cardiac diagnostic services is unknown. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the pandemic on cardiac testing practices, volumes and types of diagnostic services, and perceived psychological stress to health care providers worldwide. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations from baseline in cardiovascular diagnostic care at the pandemic's onset and 1 year later. Multivariable regression was used to determine factors associated with procedure volume recovery. Results: Surveys were submitted from 669 centers in 107 countries. Worldwide reduction in cardiac procedure volumes of 64% from March 2019 to April 2020 recovered by April 2021 in high- and upper middle-income countries (recovery rates of 108% and 99%) but remained depressed in lower middle- and low-income countries (46% and 30% recovery). Although stress testing was used 12% less frequently in 2021 than in 2019, coronary computed tomographic angiography was used 14% more, a trend also seen for other advanced cardiac imaging modalities (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance; 22%-25% increases). Pandemic-related psychological stress was estimated to have affected nearly 40% of staff, impacting patient care at 78% of sites. In multivariable regression, only lower-income status and physicians’ psychological stress were significant in predicting recovery of cardiac testing. Conclusions: Cardiac diagnostic testing has yet to recover to prepandemic levels in lower-income countries. Worldwide, the decrease in standard stress testing is offset by greater use of advanced cardiac imaging modalities. Pandemic-related psychological stress among providers is widespread and associated with poor recovery of cardiac testing.

Abstract: Uncertainties about the efficacy of influenza vaccination for populations with heart failure (HF) in preventing cardiovascular outcomes, as well as lack of effective vaccination strategies, may contribute to low vaccine coverage rate (VCR) in China and globally. We assessed the feasibility of a strategy to promote influenza vaccines in patients hospitalized with acute HF in China and to inform the design of a hybrid effectiveness-implementation cluster randomized trial to evaluate this strategy on mortality and hospital re-admission. We conducted a cluster randomized pilot trial involving 11 hospitals in Henan Province in China, with mixed-methods evaluation between December 2020 and April 2021. A process evaluation involved interviews with 51 key informants (patients, health professionals, policy makers). The intervention included education about influenza vaccination and availability of free vaccines administered prior to hospital discharge for HF patients, while usual care included attending community-based points of vaccination (PoV) for screening and vaccination. Implementation outcomes focused on reach, fidelity, adoption, and acceptability. Recruitment rates were assessed for trial feasibility. Effectiveness outcomes were influenza VCR, HF-specific rehospitalizations and mortality at 90 days. A total of 518 HF patients were recruited from 7 intervention and 4 usual care hospitals (mean of 45 participants per hospital per month). VCR was 89.9% (311/346, 86.1–92.8%) in the intervention group and 0.6% (1/ 172, 0.0–3.7%) in the control group. The process evaluation demonstrated reach to patients with lower socioeconomic and education status. There was good fidelity of the intervention components, with education and PoV set up processes being adapted to local hospital work-flow and workforce capacity. Abstract: Current high performance semantic segmentation models are purely data driven sub symbolic approaches and blind to the structured nature of the visual world This is in stark contrast to human cognition which abstracts visual perceptions at multiple levels and conducts symbolic reasoning with such structured abstraction To fill these fundamental gaps we devise LogicSeg a holistic visual semantic parser that integrates neural inductive learning and logic reasoning with both rich data and symbolic knowledge In particular the semantic concepts of interest are structured as a hierarchy from which a set of constraints are derived for describing the symbolic relations and formalized as first order logic rules After fuzzy logic based continuous relaxation logical formulae are grounded onto data and neural computational graphs hence enabling logic induced network training During inference logical constraints are packaged into an iterative process and injected into the network in a form of several matrix multiplications so as to achieve hierarchy coherent prediction with logic reasoning These designs together make LogicSeg a general and compact neural logic machine that is readily integrated into existing segmentation models Extensive experiments over four datasets with various segmentation models and backbones verify the effectiveness and generality of LogicSeg We believe this study opens a new avenue for visual semantic parsing 2023 IEEE

Abstract: Current high performance semantic segmentation models are purely data driven sub symbolic approaches and blind to the structured nature of the visual world This is in stark contrast to human cognition which abstracts visual perceptions at multiple levels and conducts symbolic reasoning with such structured abstraction To fill these fundamental gaps we devise LogicSeg a holistic visual semantic parser that integrates neural inductive learning and logic reasoning with both rich data and symbolic knowledge In particular the semantic concepts of interest are structured as a hierarchy from which a set of constraints are derived for describing the symbolic relations and formalized as first order logic rules After fuzzy logic based continuous relaxation logical formulae are grounded onto data and neural computational graphs hence enabling logic induced network training During inference logical constraints are packaged into an iterative process and injected into the network in a form of several matrix multiplications so as to achieve hierarchy coherent prediction with logic reasoning These designs together make LogicSeg a general and compact neural logic machine that is readily integrated into existing segmentation models Extensive experiments over four datasets with various segmentation models and backbones verify the effectiveness and generality of LogicSeg We believe this study opens a new avenue for visual semantic parsing 2023 IEEE

Abstract: Rainfall-runoff process mobilizes considerable dissolved organic matter (DOM) from soils to aquatic systems via surface and sub-surface flow pathways. Microrelief induced by tillage management can alter this flow partitioning and thus likely affect the associated pathway and composition of DOM exports during rainfall. This study conducted rainfall simulation experiments, combined with three-dimensional fluorescence spectra analysis and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) technology, to explore the effects of different surface microreliefs treatments on the quantity and composition of DOM exports at a plot scale. Four typical microrelief treatments (i.e., contour tillage (CP), longitudinal tillage (LP), artificial digging tillage (AP), and flat tillage (CK, as control)) were selected. Results showed that ratios of surface to sub-surface flow volume under four treatments were in order of LP (193:1)>CK (73:1)>AP (4.5:1)>CP (0.5:1). DOM concentrations in sub-surface flow (13.37∼33.50 mg L-1) were 7∼18 times of that in surface flow (0.03∼4.56 mg L-1). The total export fluxes of DOM were 134, 139, 563, and 1214 mg m-2 at LP, CK, AP, and CP treatments, respectively, with proportions of 8%, 17%, 82%, and 98% via sub-surface flow. Compared to surface flow, DOM molecular composition in sub-surface flow showed a significant feature of higher oxygen to carbon ratio, higher molecular weight, and lower hydrogen to carbon ratio. The findings indicated that microrelief with higher surface storage capacity tends to favor a large flux of DOM export, primarily via sub-surface flow, which might significantly affect the DOM cycling in the receiving aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract: To characterize human leukocyte antigen (HLA) loci as risk factors in aromatic antiepileptic drug-induced maculopapular exanthema (AED-MPE). A case-control study was performed to investigate HLA loci involved in AED-MPE in a southern Han Chinese population. Between January 2007 and June 2019, 267 patients with carbamazepine (CBZ), oxcarbazepine (OXC), or lamotrigine (LTG) associated MPE and 387 matched drug-tolerant controls from six centers were enrolled. HLA-A/B/C/DRB1 genotypes were determined using sequence-based typing. Potential risk alleles were validated by meta-analysis using data from different populations and in silico analysis of protein-drug interactions. HLA-DRB1*04:06 was significantly associated with OXC-MPE (p = 0.002, p c = 0.04). HLA-B*38:02 was associated with CBZ-MPE (p = 0.03). When pooled, HLA-A*24:02, HLA-A*30:01, and HLA-B*35:01 additionally revealed significant association with AED-MPE. Logistic regression analysis showed a multiplicative interaction between HLA-A*24:02 and HLA-B*38:02 in CBZ-MPE. Meta-analysis of data from different populations revealed that HLA-24*:02 and HLA-A*30:01 were associated with AED-MPE (p = 0.02 and p = 0.04, respectively). In silico analysis of protein-drug interaction demonstrated that HLA-A*24:02 and HLA-A*30:01 had higher affinities with the three aromatic AEDs than the risk-free HLA-A allele. HLA-DRB1*04:06 showed relatively specific high affinity with S-monohydroxy derivative of OXC. HLA-DRB1*04:06 is a specific risk allele for OXC-induced MPE in the Southern Han Chinese. HLA-A*24:02, possibly HLA-A*30:01, are common risk factors for AED-MPE. The multiplicative risk potential between HLA-A*24:02 and HLA-B*38:02 suggests that patients with two risk alleles are at greater risk than those with one risk allele. Inclusion of these HLA alleles in pre-treatment screening would help estimating the risk of AED-MPE.

Abstract: Magnetic reconnection and turbulence are the two most important energy dissipation processes in plasma. These two processes intertwine with each other and play important roles in their respective dynamic evolution. Here, we present the first evidence that secondary reconnections occur in the turbulent outflow driven by a primary reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail. We have identified 14 secondary reconnections in a large number of current filaments in the turbulent outflow, which persisted for about one and half an hour. Most of these secondary reconnections were electron-only reconnection that has recently been discovered in the magnetosheath. These secondary reconnections entangled the magnetic field lines and dissipated the magnetic energy in the outflow region far away from the primary X line.

Abstract: Access to hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing and treatment is limited in Myanmar. We assessed an integrated HIV and viral hepatitis testing and HCV treatment strategy. Sofosbuvir/velpatasvir (SOF/VEL) ± weight-based ribavirin for 12 weeks was provided at three treatment sites in Myanmar and sustained virologic response (SVR) assessed at 12 weeks after treatment. Participants co-infected with HBV were treated concurrently with tenofovir. Cost estimates in 2018 USD were made at Yangon and Mandalay using standard micro-costing methods. 803 participants initiated SOF/VEL; 4.8% were lost to follow-up. SVR was achieved in 680/803 (84.6%) by intention-to-treat analysis. SVR amongst people who inject drugs (PWID) was 79.7% (381/497), but 92.5% among PWID on opioid substitution therapy (OST) (74/80), and 97.4% among non-PWID (298/306). Utilizing data from 492 participants, of whom 93% achieved SVR, the estimated average cost of treatment per patient initiated was $1030 (of which 54% were medication costs), with a production cost per successful outcome (SVR) of $1109 and real-world estimate of $1250. High SVR rates were achieved for non-PWID and PWID on OST. However, the estimated average cost of the intervention (under the assumption of no genotype testing and reduced real-world effectiveness) of $1250/patient is unaffordable for a national elimination strategy. Reductions in the cost of antivirals and linkage to social and behavioural health services including substance use disorder treatment to increase retention and adherence to treatment are critical to HCV elimination in this population.

This study proposes a semi-active variable-stiffness tuned mass damper (VSTMD) with magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) materials to mitigate undesired dynamic responses of OWT. A jacket supported OWT with MRE-TMD installed at the top of the tower is adopted as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design under multiple hazards. A semi-active frequency tracing algorithm is proposed through which the current-dependent stiffness of MRE-TMD is controlled by tracking the acceleration of OWT tower. The numerical results demonstrate that the semi-active MRE-TMD can effectively attenuate the dynamic responses of OWT under multi-hazard loadings, and it outperforms the passive TMD in reducing the peak and RMS displacements of tower structure. Robustness analysis of semi-active MRE-TMD is also validated by considering OWT sudden loss of partial stiffness under multiple-loadings.

In this paper, we explore the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) that starts when inhaled substances that reach the alveoli inhibit the function of the lung surfactant, and leads to decreased lung function. Lung surfactant covers the inner surface of the alveoli, and regulates the surface tension at the air–liquid interface during breathing. The inhibition of the lung surfactant function leads to alveolar collapse because of the resulting high surface tension at the end of expiration. The collapsed alveoli can be re-opened by inspiration, but this re-opening causes shear stress on cells covering the alveoli. This can damage the alveolar-capillary membrane integrity, allowing blood components to enter the alveolar airspace. Blood components, such as albumin, can interact with the lung surfactant and further inhibit its function. The collapse of the alveoli is responsible for a decrease in the surface area available for blood oxygenation, and it reduces the volume of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. These different key events lead to decreased lung function, characterized by clinical signs of respiratory toxicity and reduced blood oxygenation. Here we present the weight of evidence that supports the AOP, and we give an overview of the methods available in vitro and in vivo to measure each key event of the pathway, and how this AOP can potentially be used in screening for inhalation toxicity.

Abstract: We report a Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission observation of magnetic reconnection occurring at the edge of a large-scale magnetic flux rope (MFR), the cross-section of which was about 2 R-E. The MFR was observed at the duskside in the Earth's magnetotail and was highly oblique with its axis approximately along theX(GSM)direction. We find an electron-scale current sheet near the edge of this MFR. The Hall magnetic and electric field, super-Alfvenic electron outflow, parallel electric field, and positive energy dissipation were observed associated with the current sheet, which indicates that MMS detected a reconnecting current sheet with a large guide field. Interestingly, ions were not coupled in this reconnection, akin to the electron-only reconnection observed in the turbulent magnetosheath. We further find that the electron-only reconnection is commonly associated with a macroscopic MFR. This result will shed new light on understanding the multiscale coupling associated with an MFR in space plasmas.

Abstract: Satellite-derived geophysical variables provide valuable information about the Earth’s functioning, but there are errors that limit their direct uses. Linearly combining two or more data sources is a simple and efficient method to reduce the uncertainty between the truth and observations. However, calculating the optimal weight for such a linear combination generally needs a reference “truth” that is rarely available in practical applications. To address this limitation, a triple collocation (TC) technique is often used to estimate data error by using a data triplet without the truth. The TC-based error variances are then applied to calculate the optimal weight calculation with an assumption of independence between errors. However, ignoring the error cross-correlations (ECC) can lead to inaccurate optimal weight for a linear combination and hence may degrade the performance of calculations using merged products. Recently, an extended double instrumental variable (EIVD) method has been proposed to estimate ECC using only three products like TC. In this study, we examined the performance of a EIVD-based linear combination approach through two applications using synthetic data and actual satellite-derived soil moisture products. For direct comparison, the TC-based linear combination was also implemented using the same datasets. The verification showed that the EIVD-based products are generally better than the TC-based products and result in statistically significant differences in correlation coefficients. While the results here are based on soil moisture, the proposed method is potentially applicable for reconstruction of other datasets that seldom have suitable references in large-scale regional settings.

However, accurately monitoring the spatial distribution of photothermal transducing agents (PTAs) and mapping the real-time temperature change in tumor and peritumoral normal tissue remain a huge challenge. Here, we propose an innovative strategy to integrate T1-MRI for precisely tracking PTAs with magnetic resonance temperature imaging (MRTI) for real-time monitoring temperature change in vivo during PTT. NaBiF4: Gd@PDA@PEG nanomaterials were synthesized with favorable T1-weighted performance to target tumor and localize PTAs. The extremely weak susceptibility (1.04 × 10-6 emu g-1 Oe1-) of NaBiF4: Gd@PDA@PEG interferes with the local phase marginally, which maintains the capability of MRTI to dynamically record real-time temperature change in tumor and peritumoral normal tissue. The time resolution is 19 s per frame, and the detection precision of temperature change is approximately 0.1 K. The approach achieving PTT guided by multimode MRI holds significant potential for the clinical application.

Abstract: Elevated CO2 (eCO2) experiments provide critical information to quantify the effects of rising CO2 on vegetation1–6. Many eCO2 experiments suggest that nutrient limitations modulate the local magnitude of the eCO2 effect on plant biomass1,3,5, but the global extent of these limitations has not been empirically quantified, complicating projections of the capacity of plants to take up CO2 7,8. Here, we present a data-driven global quantification of the eCO2 effect on biomass based on 138 eCO2 experiments. The strength of CO2 fertilization is primarily driven by nitrogen (N) in ~65% of global vegetation and by phosphorus (P) in ~25% of global vegetation, with N- or P-limitation modulated by mycorrhizal association. Our approach suggests that CO2 levels expected by 2100 can potentially enhance plant biomass by 12 ± 3% above current values, equivalent to 59 ± 13 PgC. The global-scale response to eCO2 we derive from experiments is similar to past changes in greenness9 and biomass10 with rising CO2, suggesting that CO2 will continue to stimulate plant biomass in the future despite the constraining effect of soil nutrients. Our research reconciles conflicting evidence on CO2 fertilization across scales and provides an empirical estimate of the biomass sensitivity to eCO2 that may help to constrain climate projections.

Abstract: What percentage of Americans have ever had a family member incarcerated? To answer this question, we designed the Family History of Incarceration Survey (FamHIS). The survey was administered in the summer of 2018 by NORC at the University of Chicago using their AmeriSpeak Panel. It was funded by FWD.us, which released a separate report using the data. The data show that 45 percent of Americans have ever had an immediate family member incarcerated. The incarceration of an immediate family member was most prevalent for blacks (63 percent) but common for whites (42 percent) and Hispanics (48 percent) as well. College graduates had a lower risk of having a family member incarcerated, but the risk for black college graduates was comparatively high. The most common form of family member incarceration was the incarceration of a sibling.

Abstract: Metal-based nanomaterials (MNMs) represent a large category of the engineered nanomaterials, and have been extensively used to enhance the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of nanoenabled consumer products. Inhaled MNMs can penetrate deeply into the peripheral lung at which they first interact with the pulmonary surfactant (PS) lining of alveoli. Here we studied the biophysical inhibitory potential of representative MNMs on a modified natural PS, Infasurf, using a novel in vitro experimental methodology called the constrained drop surfactometry (CDS). It was found that the biophysical inhibitory potential of six MNMs on Infasurf ranks in the order CeO2 > ZnO > TiO2 > Ag > Fe3O4 > ZrO2-CeO2. This rank of in vitro biophysical inhibition is in general agreement with the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of these MNMs. Directly imaging the lateral structure and molecular conformation of the PS film using atomic force microscopy revealed that there exists a correlation between biophysical inhibition of the PS film by the MNMs and their aggregation state at the PS film. Taken together, our study suggests that the nano-bio interactions at the PS film are determined by multiple physicochemical properties of the MNMs, including not only well-studied properties such as their chemical composition and particle size, but also properties such as hydrophobicity, dissolution rate, and aggregation state at the PS film found here. Our study provides novel insight into the understanding of nanotoxicology and metallomics of MNMs.

Abstract: An integrated understanding of the biogeochemical consequences of climate extremes and land use changes is needed to constrain land-surface feedbacks to atmospheric CO2 from associated climate change. Past assessments of the global carbon balance have shown particularly high uncertainty in Southeast Asia. Here, we use a combination of model ensembles to show that intensified land use change made Southeast Asia a strong source of CO2 from the 1980s to 1990s, whereas the region was close to carbon neutral in the 2000s due to an enhanced CO2 fertilization effect and absence of moderate-to-strong El Niño events. Our findings suggest that despite ongoing deforestation, CO2 emissions were substantially decreased during the 2000s, largely owing to milder climate that restores photosynthetic capacity and suppresses peat and deforestation fire emissions. The occurrence of strong El Niño events after 2009 suggests that the region has returned to conditions of increased vulnerability of carbon stocks.

40. Exploring the feasibility of targeted chronic hepatitis B screening in the emergency department: A pilot study

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of an ED chronic hepatitis B (CHB) screening programme. METHODS: Adult patients born in intermediate-high CHB prevalent regions completed a pre-screening questionnaire and were offered CHB testing. ED staff were surveyed to gauge potential barriers to the programme. RESULTS: Eighty patients demonstrated limited knowledge of hepatitis B virus transmission and perceived many barriers to screening. Among 65 tested for CHB, no new cases were detected but 36 (55.4%, 95% CI 42.6-67.5) were susceptible to infection. Staff supported the programme but reported potential barriers. CONCLUSION: Targeted ED CHB screening is feasible but effectiveness and cost-effectiveness need further exploration.

Abstract: During the shutdown of the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2013-2014, an additional pixel layer was installed between the existing Pixel detector of the ATLAS experiment and a new, smaller radius beam pipe. The motivation for this new pixel layer, the Insertable B-Layer (IBL), was to maintain or improve the robustness and performance of the ATLAS tracking system, given the higher instantaneous and integrated luminosities realised following the shutdown. Because of the extreme radiation and collision rate environment, several new radiation-tolerant sensor and electronic technologies were utilised for this layer. Abstract: The lungs have potential as a means of systemic drug delivery of macromolecules. Systemic delivery requires crossing of the air-blood barrier, however with molecular size-dependent limitations in lung absorption of large molecules. Systemic availability after inhalation can be improved by absorption enhancers, such as bile salts. Enhancers may potentially interfere with the different constituents of the lungs, e.g. the lung surfactant lining the alveoli or the lung epithelium. We used two in vitro models to investigate the potential effects of bile salts on lung surfactant function (with the constrained drop surfactometer) and on the epithelium in the proximal airways (with the MucilAirTM cell system), respectively. In addition, we measured direct effects on respiration in mice inhaling bile salt aerosols. The bile salts inhibited lung surfactant function at different dose levels, however they did not affect the integrity of ciliated cells at the tested doses. Furthermore, the bile salt aerosols induced changes in the breathing pattern of mice indicative of pulmonary irritation. The bile salts were ranked according to potency in vitro for surfactant function disruption and in vivo for induction of pulmonary irritation. The ranking was the same, suggesting a correlation between the interference with lung surfactant and the respiratory response.

Abstract: The use of dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) to estimate CO2 emissions from land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) offers a new window to account for spatial and temporal details of emissions and for ecosystem processes affected by LULCC. One drawback of LULCC emissions from DGVMs, however, is lack of observation constraint. Here, we propose a new method of using satellite-and inventory-based biomass observations to constrain historical cumulative LULCC emissions (E-LUC(c)) from an ensemble of nine DGVMs based on emerging relationships between simulated vegetation biomass and E-LUC(c). This method is applicable on the global and regional scale. The original DGVM estimates of E-LUC(c) range from 94 to 273 PgC during 1901-2012. After constraining by current biomass observations, we derive a best estimate of 155 +/- 50 PgC (1 sigma Gaussian error). The constrained LULCC emissions are higher than prior DGVM values in tropical regions but significantly lower in North America. Our emergent constraint approach independently verifies the median model estimate by biomass observations, giving support to the use of this estimate in carbon budget assessments. The uncertainty in the constrained Ec LUC is still relatively large because of the uncertainty in the biomass observations, and thus reduced uncertainty in addition to increased accuracy in biomass observations in the future will help improve the constraint. This constraint method can also be applied to evaluate the impact of land-based mitigation activities.
