Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has gradually shown the potential in the treatment of aMCI as an emerging treatment method in recent times. This study is to observe the effect of HBO on the long-term learning memory of aMCI rats, and investigate the associated mechanisms.Methods: Seventy-two male rats (4-month-old) were randomly divided into control (CON) group, aMCI group, HBO group, 24 rats in each group. Each group was randomly divided into CON1, CON7, CON28; aMCI1, aMCI7, aMCI28; HBO1, HBO7, HBO28, 8 rats in each group. The aMCI model rats were established in aMCI and HBO groups. HBO group was treated with HBO for 7 days. The ethological and cytopathology which include Morris water maze (MWM) test, HE staining, TUNEL staining and the expression of Fas/FasL on neuron membrane were conducted to evaluate the effects of HBO on day 1, day 7 and day 28 after HBO treatment.Results: MWM test showed that the spatial learning and memory ability of the rats decreased in aMCI group, and recovered in HBO group; Compared with aMCI group, the pathological damage of hippocampal nerve cells was alleviated, the number of apoptotic cells was significantly reduced (P < 0.05), and the expression of Fas/FasL on the sur

2. N$^{3}$-Mapping: Normal Guided Neural Non-Projective Signed Distance Fields for Large-scale 3D Mapping

Abstract

Accurate and dense mapping in large-scale environments is essential for various robot applications. Recently, implicit neural signed distance fields (SDFs) have shown promising advances in this task. However, most existing approaches employ projective distances from range data as SDF supervision, introducing approximation errors and thus degrading the mapping quality. To address this problem, we introduce N$^{3}$-Mapping, an implicit neural mapping system featuring normal-guided neural non-projective signed distance fields. Specifically, we directly sample points along the surface normal, instead of the ray, to obtain more accurate non-projective distance values from range data. Then these distance values are used as supervision to train the implicit map. For large-scale mapping, we apply a voxel-oriented sliding window mechanism to alleviate the forgetting issue with a bounded memory footprint. Besides, considering the uneven distribution of measured point clouds, a hierarchical sampling strategy is designed to improve training efficiency. Experiments demonstrate that our method effectively mitigates SDF approximation errors and achieves state-of-the-art mapping quality compared to existing approaches., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. 3. Exploring Mathematical Extrapolation of Large Language Models with Synthetic Data

Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown excellent performance in language understanding, text generation, code synthesis, and many other tasks, while they still struggle in complex multi-step reasoning problems, such as mathematical reasoning. In this paper, through a newly proposed arithmetical puzzle problem, we show that the model can perform well on multi-step reasoning tasks via fine-tuning on high-quality synthetic data. Experimental results with the open-llama-3B model on three different test datasets show that not only the model can reach a zero-shot pass@1 at 0.44 on the in-domain dataset, it also demonstrates certain generalization capabilities on the out-of-domain datasets. Specifically, this paper has designed two out-of-domain datasets in the form of extending the numerical range and the composing components of the arithmetical puzzle problem separately. The fine-tuned models have shown encouraging performance on these two far more difficult tasks with the zero-shot pass@1 at 0.33 and 0.35, respectively., Comment: Accept by Findings of ACL 2024

Abstract

Value function factorization methods are commonly used in cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning, with QMIX receiving significant attention. Many QMIX-based methods introduce monotonicity constraints between the joint action value and individual action values to achieve decentralized execution. However, such constraints limit the representation capacity of value factorization, restricting the joint action values it can represent and hindering the learning of the optimal policy. To address this challenge, we propose the Potentially Optimal joint actions Weighted QMIX (POWQMIX) algorithm, which recognizes the potentially optimal joint actions and assigns higher weights to the corresponding losses of these joint actions during training. We theoretically prove that with such a weighted training approach the optimal policy is guaranteed to be recovered. Experiments in matrix games, predator-prey, and StarCraft II Multi-Agent Challenge environments demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art value-based multi-agent reinforcement learning methods., Comment: change reference format

5. LOG-LIO2: A LiDAR-Inertial Odometry with Efficient Uncertainty Analysis

Abstract

Uncertainty in LiDAR measurements, stemming from factors such as range sensing, is crucial for LIO (LiDAR-Inertial Odometry) systems as it affects the accurate weighting in the loss function. While recent LIO systems address uncertainty related to range sensing, the impact of incident angle on uncertainty is often overlooked by the community. Moreover, the existing uncertainty propagation methods suffer from computational inefficiency. This paper proposes a comprehensive point uncertainty model that accounts for both the uncertainties from LiDAR measurements and surface characteristics, along with an efficient local uncertainty analytical method for LiDAR-based state estimation problem. We employ a projection operator that separates the uncertainty into the ray direction and its orthogonal plane. Then, we derive incremental Jacobian matrices of eigenvalues and eigenvectors w.r.t. points, which enables a fast approximation of uncertainty propagation. This approach eliminates the requirement for redundant traversal of points, significantly reducing the time complexity of uncertainty propagation from $\mathcal{O} (n)$ to $\mathcal{O} (1)$ when a new point is added. Simulations and experiments on public datasets are conducted to validate the accuracy and efficiency of our formulations. Abstract

1. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in ecosystem processes and functions, but how their co-occurrence networks respond to restoration of degraded ecosystems remains poorly understood. 2. Here, we examined the effects of revegetation on the structure and function of the soil microbiome, including soil microbial network complexity and stability, in a novel riparian ecosystem with winter submergence opposite to the natural hydrological regime. 3. We found that extreme flooding intensity (30 m submergence up to 286 days per year) reduced microbial alpha-diversity and network stability (robustness) but increased network complexity including network connectivity, connectance and average clustering coefficient over a 3-year period, and those effects were mitigated by active revegetation in comparison with natural regeneration. Revegetation increased microbial network stability directly by decreasing network complexity, while extreme flooding regulated network stability indirectly by changing the soil total carbon content. Nevertheless, those dynamics of microbial network were coupling with soil microbial functions such as greenhouse gas (e.g. CH4, CO2 and N2O) fluxes and nutrient cycling. 4. Synthesis and applications: This study provides evidence to support the critical role of revegetation in preserving soil microbial network stability and functions under changing hydrological regime.

Thus, device designs wherelateral electron hopping is promoted can lead to enhanced cell performance.Herein, we present an indirect proof by involving a second dye tomonitor the effect of electron hopping after hole injection into thesemiconductor. In mesoporous NiO films sensitized with peryleneimide(PMI) or naphthalene diimide (NDI) dyes, dye excitation led to ultrafasthole injection into NiO from either excited PMI* (tau < 200fs) or NDI* (tau = 1.2 ps). In cosensitized films, surface electrontransfer from PMI- to NDI was rapid (tau = 24ps). Interestingly, the subsequent charge recombination (ps-mu s)with NiO holes was much slower when NDI- was generatedby electron transfer from PMI- than when NDI wasexcited directly. We therefore indicate that the charge recombinationis slowed down after the charge hopping from the original PMI sitesto the NDI sites. The experimental results supported our hypothesisand revealed important information on the charge carrier kineticsfor the dye-sensitized NiO photoelectrode system.

Culture-independent metagenomic studies have revolutionized our understanding of the gut microbiota. However, the lack of full genomes from cultured species is still a limitation for in-depth studies of the gut microbiota. Here we present a substantially expanded version of our Cultivated Genome Reference (CGR), termed CGR2, providing 3324 high-quality draft genomes from isolates selected from a large-scale cultivation of bacterial isolates from fecal samples of healthy Chinese individuals. The CGR2 classifies 527 species (179 previously unidentified species) from 8 phyla, and uncovers a genomic and functional diversity of Collinsella aerofaciens. The CGR2 genomes match 126 metagenome-assembled genomes without cultured representatives in the Unified Human Gastrointestinal Genome (UHGG) collection and harbor 3767 unidentified secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters, providing a source of natural compounds with pharmaceutical potentials. To improve the robustness of VPR in perceptually aliasing scenarios, sequence-based VPR methods are proposed. These methods are either based on matching between frame sequences or extracting sequence descriptors for direct retrieval. However, the former is usually based on the assumption of constant velocity, which is difficult to hold in practice, and is computationally expensive and subject to sequence length. Although the latter overcomes these problems, existing sequence descriptors are constructed by aggregating features of multiple frames only, without interaction on temporal information, and thus cannot obtain descriptors with spatio-temporal discrimination.In this paper, we propose a sequence descriptor that effectively incorporates spatio-temporal information. Specifically, spatial attention within the same frame is utilized to learn spatial feature patterns, while attention in corresponding local regions of different frames is utilized to learn the persistence or change of features over time. We use a sliding window to control the temporal range of attention and use relative positional encoding to construct sequential relationships between different features. Abstract

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is critical to the implementation of autonomous driving. Most LiDAR-inertial SLAM algorithms assume a static environment, leading to unreliable localization in dynamic environments. Moreover, the accurate tracking of moving objects is of great significance for the control and planning of autonomous vehicles. This study proposes LIMOT, a tightly-coupled multi-object tracking and LiDAR-inertial odometry system that is capable of accurately estimating the poses of both ego-vehicle and objects. We propose a trajectory-based dynamic feature filtering method, which filters out features belonging to moving objects by leveraging tracking results before scan-matching. Factor graph-based optimization is then conducted to optimize the bias of the IMU and the poses of both the ego-vehicle and surrounding objects in a sliding window. Experiments conducted on the KITTI tracking dataset and self-collected dataset show that our method achieves better pose and tracking accuracy than our previous work DL-SLOT and other baseline methods. 16. Progressive Dual Priori Network for Generalized Breast Tumor Segmentation

Abstract

To promote the generalization ability of breast tumor segmentation models, as well as to improve the segmentation performance for breast tumors with smaller size, low-contrast amd irregular shape, we propose a progressive dual priori network (PDPNet) to segment breast tumors from dynamic enhanced magnetic resonance images (DCE-MRI) acquired at different sites. The PDPNet first cropped tumor regions with a coarse-segmentation based localization module, then the breast tumor mask was progressively refined by using the weak semantic priori and cross-scale correlation prior knowledge. To validate the effectiveness of PDPNet, we compared it with several state-of-the-art methods on multi-center datasets. The results showed that, comparing against the suboptimal method, the DSC, SEN, KAPPA and HD95 of PDPNet were improved 3.63\%, 8.19\%, 5.52\%, and 3.66\% respectively. In addition, through ablations, we demonstrated that the proposed localization module can decrease the influence of normal tissues and therefore improve the generalization ability of the model. The weak semantic priors allow focusing on tumor regions to avoid missing small tumors and low-contrast tumors. The cross-scale correlation priors are beneficial for promoting the shape-aware ability for irregual tumors. Abstract

Context: There is limited data on the clinical significance of metabolic hyperferritinemia (MHF) based on the most recent consensus.Objective: We aimed to validate the clinical outcomes of MHF in the general population and patients with biopsy-proven metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).Methods: The NHANES database and PERSONS cohort were included. MHF was defined as elevated serum ferritin with metabolic dysfunction (MD) and stratified into different grades according to ferritin (grade 1: 200 [females]/300 [males]-550 ng/mL; grade 2: 550-1000 ng/mL; grade 3: >1000 ng/mL). The clinical outcomes, including all-cause death, comorbidities, and liver histology, were compared between non-MHF and MHF in adjusted models.Results: In NHANES, compared with non-MHF with MD, MHF was related to higher risks of advanced fibrosis (P = .036), elevated albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR, P = .001), and sarcopenia (P = .013). Although the association between all grades of MHF and mortality was insignificant (P = .122), grades 2/3 was associated with increased mortality (P = .029). When comparing with non-MHF without MD, the harmful effects of MHF were more significant in mortality (P < .001), elevated UACR (P < .001), cardiovascular disease (P = .028), and sarcopenia (P < .001). In the PERSONS cohort, MHF was associated with more advanced grades of steatosis (P < .001), lobular inflammation (P < .001), advanced fibrosis (P = .017), and more severe hepatocellular iron deposition (P < .001).Conclusion: Both in the general population and in at-risk individuals with MAFLD, MHF was related with poorer clinical outcomes.

18. How to Fine-tune the Model: Unified Model Shift and Model Bias Policy Optimization

Abstract

Designing and deriving effective model-based reinforcement learning (MBRL) algorithms with a performance improvement guarantee is challenging, mainly attributed to the high coupling between model learning and policy optimization. Many prior methods that rely on return discrepancy to guide model learning ignore the impacts of model shift, which can lead to performance deterioration due to excessive model updates. Other methods use performance difference bound to explicitly consider model shift. However, these methods rely on a fixed threshold to constrain model shift, resulting in a heavy dependence on the threshold and a lack of adaptability during the training process. In this paper, we theoretically derive an optimization objective that can unify model shift and model bias and then formulate a fine-tuning process. This process adaptively adjusts the model updates to get a performance improvement guarantee while avoiding model overfitting. Based on these, we develop a straightforward algorithm USB-PO (Unified model Shift and model Bias Policy Optimization). Empirical results show that USB-PO achieves state-of-the-art performance on several challenging benchmark tasks.

19. VNI-Net: Vector Neurons-based Rotation-Invariant Descriptor for LiDAR Place Recognition

Abstract

LiDAR-based place recognition plays a crucial role in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and LiDAR localization. Despite the emergence of various deep learning-based and hand-crafting-based methods, rotation-induced place recognition failure remains a critical challenge. Existing studies address this limitation through specific training strategies or network structures. However, the former does not produce satisfactory results, while the latter focuses mainly on the reduced problem of SO(2) rotation invariance. Methods targeting SO(3) rotation invariance suffer from limitations in discrimination capability. In this paper, we propose a new method that employs Vector Neurons Network (VNN) to achieve SO(3) rotation invariance. We first extract rotation-equivariant features from neighboring points and map low-dimensional features to a high-dimensional space through VNN. Afterwards, we calculate the Euclidean and Cosine distance in the rotation-equivariant feature space as rotation-invariant feature descriptors. Finally, we aggregate the features using GeM pooling to obtain global descriptors. To address the significant information loss when formulating rotation-invariant descriptors, we propose computing distances between features at different layers within the Euclidean space neighborhood. This greatly improves the discriminability of the point cloud descriptors while ensuring computational efficiency. Experimental results on public datasets show that our approach significantly outperforms other baseline methods implementing rotation invariance, while achieving comparable results with current state-of-the-art place recognition methods that do not consider rotation issues.

20. LOG-LIO: A LiDAR-Inertial Odometry with Efficient Local Geometric Information Estimation

Abstract

Local geometric information, i.e. normal and distribution of points, is crucial for LiDAR-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) because it provides constraints for data association, which further determines the direction of optimization and ultimately affects the accuracy of localization. However, estimating normal and distribution of points are time-consuming tasks even with the assistance of kdtree or volumetric maps. To achieve fast normal estimation, we look into the structure of LiDAR scan and propose a ring-based fast approximate least squares (Ring FALS) method. With the Ring structural information, estimating the normal requires only the range information of the points when a new scan arrives. To efficiently estimate the distribution of points, we extend the ikd-tree to manage the map in voxels and update the distribution of points in each voxel incrementally while maintaining its consistency with the normal estimation. We further fix the distribution after its convergence to balance the time consumption and the correctness of representation. Based on the extracted and maintained local geometric information, we devise a robust and accurate hierarchical data association scheme where point-to-surfel association is prioritized over point-to-plane. Extensive experiments on diverse public datasets demonstrate the advantages of our system compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Abstract

Safety is one of the main challenges in applying reinforcement learning to realistic environmental tasks. To ensure safety during and after training process, existing methods tend to adopt overly conservative policy to avoid unsafe situations. However, overly conservative policy severely hinders the exploration, and makes the algorithms substantially less rewarding. In this paper, we propose a method to construct a boundary that discriminates safe and unsafe states. The boundary we construct is equivalent to distinguishing dead-end states, indicating the maximum extent to which safe exploration is guaranteed, and thus has minimum limitation on exploration. Similar to Recovery Reinforcement Learning, we utilize a decoupled RL framework to learn two policies, (1) a task policy that only considers improving the task performance, and (2) a recovery policy that maximizes safety. The recovery policy and a corresponding safety critic are pretrained on an offline dataset, in which the safety critic evaluates upper bound of safety in each state as awareness of environmental safety for the agent. During online training, a behavior correction mechanism is adopted, ensuring the agent to interact with the environment using safe actions only. Abstract

Micro/nano topographic structures have shown great utility in many biomedical areas including cell therapies, tissue engineering, and implantable devices. Computer-assisted informatics methods hold great promise for the design of topographic structures with targeted properties for a specific medical application. To benefit from these methods, researchers and engineers require a highly reusable “one structural parameter – one set of cell re-sponses” database. However, existing confounding factors in topographic cell culture devices seriously impede the acquisition of this kind of data. Through carefully dissecting the confounding factors and their possible reasons for emergence, we developed corresponding guideline requirements for topographic cell culture device development to remove or control the influence of such factors. Based on these requirements, we then suggested potential strategies to meet them. In this work, we also experimentally demonstrated a topographic cell culture device with controlled confounding factors based on these guideline requirements and corresponding strategies. A “guideline for the development of topographic cell culture devices” was summarized to instruct researchers to develop topographic cell culture devices with the confounding factors removed or well controlled. This guideline aims to promote the establishment of a highly reusable “one structural parameter – one set of cell responses” database that could facilitate the application of informatics methods, such as artificial intelligence, in the rational design of future biotopographic structures with high efficacy.

Our work utilises three perylene analogues substituted with phenyl in sequential positions. When substituted in the bay position the isomer displays drastically lowered upconversion yields, which can be explained by the system going from an ideal to less-ideal energy configuration. We further concluded position 2 is the best site when functionalising perylene without a wish to affect its photophysics, thus demonstrating how molecular design can influence upconversion quantum efficiencies by controlling the energetics of triplet states through substitution. This will in turn help in the design of molecules that maximise upconversion efficiencies for materials applications.

29. DL-SLOT: Dynamic LiDAR SLAM and object tracking based on collaborative graph optimization

Ego-pose estimation and dynamic object tracking are two critical problems for autonomous driving systems. The solutions to these problems are generally based on their respective assumptions, \ie{the static world assumption for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and the accurate ego-pose assumption for object tracking}. However, these assumptions are challenging to hold in dynamic road scenarios, where SLAM and object tracking become closely correlated. Therefore, we propose DL-SLOT, a dynamic LiDAR SLAM and object tracking method, to simultaneously address these two coupled problems. This method integrates the state estimations of both the autonomous vehicle and the stationary and dynamic objects in the environment into a unified optimization framework. First, we used object detection to identify all points belonging to potentially dynamic objects. Subsequently, a LiDAR odometry was conducted using the filtered point cloud. Simultaneously, we proposed a sliding window-based object association method that accurately associates objects according to the historical trajectories of tracked objects. The ego-states and those of the stationary and dynamic objects are integrated into the sliding window-based collaborative graph optimization. The stationary objects are subsequently restored from the potentially dynamic object set. Finally, a global pose-graph is implemented to eliminate the accumulated error. Experiments on KITTI datasets demonstrate that our method achieves better accuracy than SLAM and object tracking baseline methods. Esto se ve reflejado en ámbitos como el laboral, cuando es necesario administrar la carga de trabajo, o en el educativo, dado que es inevitable organizar las clases, pruebas, actividades y extraescolares. Asimismo, muchas personas con diversidad funcional deben incluir en sus agendas cuándo acuden a terapia, al médico, al fisioterapeuta y/o a talleres especializados. Para alcanzarlo, uno de los pasos a seguir es el de aprender a gestionarse en el tiempo y a planificar a corto y largo plazo. En la actualidad, no hay muchas aplicaciones que les faciliten esta tarea de manera accesible, el objetivo principal de AGENDIV será desarrollar una aplicación accesible que permita a los usuarios consultar y gestionar tanto su horario como su calendario personal de manera totalmente personalizable y adaptable a las necesidades de los mismos. 31. DL-SLOT: Dynamic Lidar SLAM and Object Tracking Based On Graph Optimization

Abstract

Ego-pose estimation and dynamic object tracking are two key issues in an autonomous driving system. Two assumptions are often made for them, i.e. the static world assumption of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and the exact ego-pose assumption of object tracking, respectively. However, these assumptions are difficult to hold in highly dynamic road scenarios where SLAM and object tracking become correlated and mutually beneficial. In this paper, DL-SLOT, a dynamic Lidar SLAM and object tracking method is proposed. This method integrates the state estimations of both the ego vehicle and the static and dynamic objects in the environment into a unified optimization framework, to realize SLAM and object tracking (SLOT) simultaneously. Firstly, we implement object detection to remove all the points that belong to potential dynamic objects. Then, LiDAR odometry is conducted using the filtered point cloud. At the same time, detected objects are associated with the history object trajectories based on the time-series information in a sliding window. The states of the static and dynamic objects and ego vehicle in the sliding window are integrated into a unified local optimization framework. We perform SLAM and object tracking simultaneously in this framework, which significantly improves the robustness and accuracy of SLAM in highly dynamic road scenarios and the accuracy of objects' states estimation. Experiments on public datasets have shown that our method achieves better accuracy than A-LOAM.

32. Patch-NetVLAD+: Learned patch descriptor and weighted matching strategy for place recognition

Abstract

Visual Place Recognition (VPR) in areas with similar scenes such as urban or indoor scenarios is a major challenge. Existing VPR methods using global descriptors have difficulty capturing local specific regions (LSR) in the scene and are therefore prone to localization confusion in such scenarios. As a result, finding the LSR that are critical for location recognition becomes key. To address this challenge, we introduced Patch-NetVLAD+, which was inspired by patch-based VPR researches. Our method proposed a fine-tuning strategy with triplet loss to make NetVLAD suitable for extracting patch-level descriptors. Moreover, unlike existing methods that treat all patches in an image equally, our method extracts patches of LSR, which present less frequently throughout the dataset, and makes them play an important role in VPR by assigning proper weights to them. Experiments on Pittsburgh30k and Tokyo247 datasets show that our approach achieved up to 6.35\% performance improvement than existing patch-based methods.

33. Scale Estimation with Dual Quadrics for Monocular Object SLAM

Abstract

The scale ambiguity problem is inherently unsolvable to monocular SLAM without the metric baseline between moving cameras. In this paper, we present a novel scale estimation approach based on an object-level SLAM system. To obtain the absolute scale of the reconstructed map, we derive a nonlinear optimization method to make the scaled dimensions of objects conforming to the distribution of their sizes in the physical world, without relying on any prior information of gravity direction. We adopt the dual quadric to represent objects for its ability to fit objects compactly and accurately. At last, the changes in transport time, receiving department, patient satisfaction, and adverse event rate of critically ill patients after TPS management were analysed.Results: The total intrahospital transport time of critically ill patients decreased from 39 minutes (median) before the implementation of TPS management to 27 minutes (median) after TPS management, and the difference was statistically significant (P< 0.05). 35. Modulating TTA efficiency through control of high energy triplet states

Abstract

An ideal annihilator in triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion (TTA-UC) can achieve a maximum of 50% quantum efficiency. This spin statistical limit depends on the energies of the triplet states of the annihilator molecule, with only 20% quantum efficiencies possible in less-optimal energy configurations (ET2 <= 2ET1). Our work utilises three perylene analogues substituted with phenyl in sequential positions. When substituted in the bay position the isomer displays drastically lowered upconversion yields, which can be explained by the system going from an ideal to less-ideal energy configuration. We further concluded position 2 is the best site when functionalising perylene without a wish to affect its photophysics, thus demonstrating how molecular design can influence upconversion quantum efficiencies by controlling the energetics of triplet states through substitution. This will in turn help in the design of molecules that maximise upconversion efficiencies for materials applications.

Study on the effect of Cl- on corrosion behavior of the steel is of importance for corrosion protection. In this study, reinforcing steel (Q235 carbon steel) passivity in simulated polluted concrete pore solutions at pH 11.50 with different Cl- concentrations was studied by a scanning micro-reference electrode technique, combined with polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and an electron probe method. The results indicated that the steel remained passive in the solution without Cl-. The steel passivity might be destroyed by the Cl- attack, and the pitting corrosion took place. The chloride threshold level for localized corrosion of the steel in the solution was 0.010 to 0.020 M Cl-. Pitting corrosion occurred preferentially at MnS inclusion locations, and the Cl- was adsorbed at these locations resulting in depassivation of the steel surface. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Ultrathin freestanding membranes with a pronounced metal-insulator transition (MIT) have huge potential for future flexible electronic applications as well as provide a unique aspect for the study of lattice-electron interplay. However, the reduction of the thickness to an ultrathin region (a few nm) is typically detrimental to the MIT in epitaxial films, and even catastrophic for their freestanding form. Here, we report an enhanced MIT in VO2-based freestanding membranes, with a lateral size up to millimeters and the VO2 thickness down to 5 nm. The VO2 membranes were detached by dissolving a Sr3Al2O6 sacrificial layer between the VO2 thin film and the c-Al2O3(0001) substrate, allowing the transfer onto arbitrary surfaces. Furthermore, the MIT in the VO2 membrane was greatly enhanced by inserting an intermediate Al2O3 buffer layer. In comparison with the best available ultrathin VO2 membranes, the enhancement of MIT is over 400% at a 5 nm VO2 thickness and more than 1 order of magnitude for VO2 above 10 nm. Our study widens the spectrum of functionality in ultrathin and large-scale membranes and enables the potential integration of MIT into flexible electronics and photonics.

40. Direct Transition from Triplet Excitons to Hybrid Light–Matter States via Triplet–Triplet Annihilation

Abstract

Strong light–matter coupling generates hybrid states that inherit properties of both light and matter, effectively allowing the modification of the molecular potential energy landscape. This phenomenon opens up a plethora of options for manipulating the properties of molecules, with a broad range of applications in photochemistry and photophysics. In this article, we use strong light–matter coupling to transform an endothermic triplet–triplet annihilation process into an exothermic one. The resulting gradual on–off photon upconversion experiment demonstrates a direct conversion between molecular states and hybrid light–matter states. Our study provides a direct evidence that energy can relax from nonresonant low energy molecular states directly into hybrid light–matter states and lays the groundwork for tunable photon upconversion systems that modify molecular properties in situ by optical cavities rather than with chemical modifications.

Abstract

Extracellular DNA (eDNA) is a major constituent of the extracellular matrix of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms and its release is regulated via pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) dependent quorum sensing (QS). By screening a P. aeruginosa transposon library to identify factors required for DNA release, mutants with insertions in the twin-arginine translocation (Tat) pathway were identified as exhibiting reduced eDNA release, and defective biofilm architecture with enhanced susceptibility to tobramycin. P. aeruginosa tat mutants showed substantial reductions in pyocyanin, rhamnolipid and membrane vesicle (MV) production consistent with perturbation of PQS-dependent QS as demonstrated by changes in pqsA expression and 2-alkyl-4-quinolone (AQ) production. Provision of exogenous PQS to the tat mutants did not return pqsA, rhlA or phzA1 expression or pyocyanin production to wild type levels. However, transformation of the tat mutants with the AQ-independent pqs effector pqsE restored phzA1 expression and pyocyanin production. Since mutation or inhibition of Tat prevented PQS-driven auto-induction, we sought to identify the Tat substrate(s) responsible. A pqsA::lux fusion was introduced into each of 34 validated P. aeruginosa Tat substrate deletion mutants. Analysis of each mutant for reduced bioluminescence revealed that the primary signalling defect was associated with the Rieske iron-sulfur subunit of the cytochrome bc1 complex. In common with the parent strain, a Rieske mutant exhibited defective PQS signalling, AQ production, rhlA expression and eDNA release that could be restored by genetic complementation. This defect was also phenocopied by deletion of cytB or cytC1. Thus, either lack of the Rieske sub-unit or mutation of cytochrome bc1 genes results in the perturbation of PQS-dependent autoinduction resulting in eDNA deficient biofilms, reduced antibiotic tolerance and compromised virulence factor production.

Abstract

FeTe1-xSex, a promising layered material used to realize Majorana zero modes, has attracted enormous attention in recent years. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) are the routine growth methods used to prepare FeTe1-xSex thin films. However, both methods require high-vacuum conditions and polished crystalline substrates, which hinder the exploration of the topological superconductivity and related nanodevices of this material. Here we demonstrate the growth of the ultrathin FeTe1-xSex superconductor by a facile, atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The composition and thickness of the two-dimensional (2D) FeTe1-xSex nanosheets are well controlled by tuning the experimental conditions. The as-prepared FeTe0.8Se0.2 nanosheet exhibits an onset superconducting transition temperature of 12.4 K, proving its high quality. Our work offers an effective strategy for preparing the ultrathin FeTe1-xSex superconductor, which could become a promising platform for further study of the unconventional superconductivity in the FeTe1-xSex system. © 2021 American Chemical Society.

45. Optimizing photon upconversion by decoupling excimer formation and triplet triplet annihilation

Abstract

Perylene is a promising annihilator candidate for triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion, which has been successfully used in solar cells and in photocatalysis. Perylene can, however, form excimers, reducing the energy conversion efficiency and hindering further development of TTA-UC systems. Alkyl substitution of perylene can suppress excimer formation, but decelerate triplet energy transfer and triplet-triplet annihilation at the same time. Our results show that mono-substitution with small alkyl groups selectively blocks excimer formation without severly compromising the TTA-UC efficiency. The experimental results are complemented by DFT calculations, which demonstrate that excimer formation is suppressed by steric repulsion. The results demonstrate how the chemical structure can be modified to block unwanted intermolecular excited state relaxation pathways with minimal effect on the preferred ones.

Abstract

The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, which would contribute to future applications in high-capacity storage devices and advanced computing., De två första författarna delar förstaförfattarskapet.

Abstract

Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).

Abstract

The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, which would contribute to future applications in high-capacity storage devices and advanced computing.

Abstract

Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).

Abstract

In this paper, we proposed an unsupervised learning method for estimating the optical flow between video frames, especially to solve the occlusion problem. Occlusion is caused by the movement of an object or the movement of the camera, defined as when certain pixels are visible in one video frame but not in adjacent frames. Due to the lack of pixel correspondence between frames in the occluded area, incorrect photometric loss calculation can mislead the optical flow training process. In the video sequence, we found that the occlusion in the forward ($t\rightarrow t+1$) and backward ($t\rightarrow t-1$) frame pairs are usually complementary. That is, pixels that are occluded in subsequent frames are often not occluded in the previous frame and vice versa. Therefore, by using this complementarity, a new weighted loss is proposed to solve the occlusion problem. In addition, we calculate gradients in multiple directions to provide richer supervision information. Our method achieves competitive optical flow accuracy compared to the baseline and some supervised methods on KITTI 2012 and 2015 benchmarks.
