Summary: Whereas male masturbation has generally been normalized by being the butt of friendly jokes and a popular subject in romantic comedies, the predominant discourse surrounding female masturbation, both in society and the movies, is silence and stigmatization. However, female masturbation is symbolically powerful because it signifies a female sexuality that is not dependent on male presence. This thesis seeks to explore depictions of female masturbation, specifically looking at how female characters who engage in autoeroticism are stigmatized, controlled or silenced. Summary: Forty-one women filled out surveys about their heterosexual sexual behavior over the course of 30 days. These surveys tracked their menstrual cycles, sexual behavior, sexual desires, and orgasm frequency. Although the sample size was small, a number of borderline statistically significant (p < .10) trends emerged from the analysis: women experienced more copulatory orgasms on average when fertile and women who were not in relationships tended to have more frequent non-copulatory orgasms. Naturally cycling women also experienced significantly more non-copulatory orgasms when fertile. La présente étude avait comme objectif d'évaluer et de comparer la sexualité des femmes ayant des symptômes dépressifs et des femmes n'ayant pas de symptômes dépressifs et ce, en incluant toutes les variables sexuelles ayant été évaluées dans les études antérieures, en plus de trois autres variables sexuelles n'ayant jamais fait l'objet d'une évaluation empirique (i.e., orientation sexuelle, histoire sexuelle, aisance lors des rapports sexuels). Le deuxième objectif de la présente étude a été d'évaluer et de comparer la satisfaction conjugale des femmes ayant des symptômes dépressifs et des femmes n'ayant pas de symptômes dépressifs. Le troisième objectif de la présente étude a été d'évaluer le lien entre la sexualité, la satisfaction conjugale et les symptômes dépressifs des femmes. Au total, 87 femmes ayant un conjoint ou un partenaire sexuel ont participé à l'étude et ont complété un questionnaire sociodémographique et les versions françaises du Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), du Brief Index of Sexual Functioning for Women, du Sexual History Scale, du Sociosexual Orientation Inventory, de la Kinsey Scale et de la Dyadic Adjustment Scale de Spanier. L'âge moyen des 20 participantes ayant des symptômes dépressifs est de 32,05 ans et celui des 67 participantes n'ayant pas de symptômes dépressifs est de 27,94 ans. As a first step in the investigation of the role of visual attention in the processing of erotic stimuli, eye-tracking methodology was employed to measure eye movements during erotic scene presentation. Because eye-tracking is a novel methodology in sexuality research, we attempted to determine whether the eye-tracker could detect differences (should they exist) in visual attention to erotic and non-erotic scenes. A total of 20 men and 20 women were presented with a series of erotic and non-erotic images and tracked their eye movements during image presentation. Comparisons between erotic and non-erotic image groups showed significant differences on two of three dependent measures of visual attention (number of fixations and total time) in both men and women. As hypothesized, there was a significant Stimulus × Scene Region interaction, indicating that participants visually attended to the body more in the erotic stimuli than in the non-erotic stimuli, as evidenced by a greater number of fixations and longer total time devoted to that region. These findings provide support for the application of eye-tracking methodology as a measure of visual attentional capture in sexuality research. Future applications of this methodology to expand our knowledge of the role of cognition in sexuality are suggested.
