Available Gold OA, Introduction Monocytes/macrophages accumulate in the rheumatoid (RA) synovium where they play a central role in inflammation and joint destruction. Identification of molecules involved in their accumulation and differentiation is important to inform therapeutic strategies. This study investigated the expression and function of chemokine receptor CCR9 in the peripheral blood (PB) and synovium of RA, non-RA patients and healthy volunteers. Methods CCR9 expression on PB monocytes/macrophages was analysed by flow cytometry and in synovium by immunofluorescence. Chemokine receptor CCR9 mRNA expression was examined in RA and non-RA synovium, monocytes/macrophages from PB and synovial fluid (SF) of RA patients and PB of healthy donors using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Monocyte differentiation and chemotaxis to chemokine ligand 25 (CCL25)/TECK were used to study CCR9 function. Results CCR9 was expressed by PB monocytes/macrophages in RA and healthy donors, and increased in RA. In RA and non-RA synovia, CCR9 co-localised with cluster of differentiation 14+ (CD14+) and cluster of differentiation 68+ (CD68+) macrophages, and was more abundant in RA synovium. CCR9 mRNA was detected in the synovia of all RA patients and in some non-RA controls, and monocytes/macrophages from PB and SF of RA and healthy controls. CCL25 was detected in RA and non-RA synovia where it co-localised with CD14+ and CD68+ cells. Tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) increased CCR9 expression on human acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 monocytic cells. CCL25 induced a stronger monocyte differentiation in RA compared to healthy donors. CCL25 induced significant chemotaxis of PB monocytes but not consistently among individuals. Conclusions CCR9 expression by monocytes is increased in RA. CCL25 may be involved in the differentiation of monocytes to macrophages particularly in RA.

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Central Platte Natural Resources District is investigating the hydrostratigraphic framework of the High Plains aquifer in the Central Platte River basin. As part of this investigation, a comprehensive set of geophysical logs was collected from six test holes at three sites and analyzed to delineate the penetrated stratigraphic units and characterize their lithology and physical properties. Flow and fluid-property logs were collected from two wells at one of the sites and analyzed along with the other geophysical logs to determine the relative transmissivity of the High Plains aquifer units. The integrated log analysis indicated that the coarse-grained deposits of the alluvium and the upper part of the Ogallala Formation contributed more than 70 percent of the total transmissivity at this site. The lower part of the Ogallala with its moderately permeable sands and silts contributed some measureable transmissivity, as did the fine-grained sandstone of the underlying Arikaree Group, likely as a result of fractures and bedding-plane partings. Neither the lower nor the upper part of the siltstone- and claystone-dominated White River Group exhibited measurable transmissivity. The integrated analysis of the geophysical logs illustrated the utility of these methods in the detailed characterization of the hydrostratigraphy of the High Plains aquifer.

This report outlines the major milestones leading up to the present AFCEC program to determine runway skid resistance characteristics; refinements made to the program, description of equipment used to determine runway skid resistance characteristics, operating and test procedures and analysis of the skid measurement program. The development and testing of the BROWSER text retrieval system allowing a natural language query statement and providing on-line browsing capabilities through an IBM 2260 display terminal is described. The prototype system contains data bases of 25,000 German language patent abstracts, 9,000 English language patent abstracts, and 8,000 Defense Documentation Center technical abstracts. BROWSER automatically indexes textual documents, creates an inverted file for searching the unformatted text, and creates formatted files for searching bibliographic fields. Bibliographic fields may be searched independently or in conjunction with a text search. In addition to outputs of citations and abstract text, a new form of output - the Response Index - is provided. The response index consists of a one line entry for each abstract retrieved containing the search terms occurring within the abstract. During the browsing phase at the terminal, the response index enables the searcher to view the contents of the file with respect to his search terms and to screen the machine output for the ultimate user. As there are no syntax, or parsing routines the search algorithms are virtually independent of language. The system has been tested on over 100 German language queries.

An effective man-machine interactive retrieval system is not achieved by simply placing a terminal on each end of an existing machine retrieval system. An interactive system requires a sequence of steps in which man and machine alternately take action. It should also provide different levels of services to experienced and inexperienced searches, recognize the difference between a narrow and broad query, furnish clues as to the next direction to be searched, reorganize the data base dynamically as the searcher changes his view- point, providing a ranking of responses in the most likely sequence and offer the searcher the option of overriding the ranking when a particular term is of extreme significance. An online interactive system meeting many of these needs was developed and tested. The objective of the development of this system, BROWSER, was to investigate the effectiveness of a free-form query with a combinatorial search algorithm and the effectiveness of various techniques and components to facilitate online browsing.

Microphotographic techniques have been used to obtain the range distribution of the charged particles resulting from the D-D reactions at center of mass angles of 40 degress, 60 degress, and 80 degress for 10-Mev deuterons. At 80 degrees all of the groups of charged particles from these reactions are clearly resolved. The differential D-D elastic scattering cross sections have been obtained for the same angles and for these angles the cross sections per unit solid angle in the center of mass system are in the ratios of 1.00: 0.51: 0.42, respectively

Experience of browsing with a text retrieval system is reported. The technique discussed consists of adding and deleting query terms on successive iterative cycles. The number of hits consistently increased, while the number of false drops consistently decreased on successive cycles. The search system used allows non-Boolean free form query statements. Therefore, an abstract may be used as a query with the objective of finding similar abstracts from the file. (Author)

A computer classification technique was successfully tested on intelligence-type documents. Results of experiments are also reported on technical data bases in the English and German languages. Since the technique is statistical rather than syntactical it can classify documents in any language without requiring translation. In addition to the usual tests on sample and control data bases, a successful test was performed on another additional data base that had not been used to generate the classification statistics. The statistical technique is based upon multiple discriminant functions, which have the ability to classify into any number of categories, the technique provides for classification to several levels of detail. A user may select any set of subject categories suiting his need, and provides a set of sample documents for each category. A subset of words to form the classification bases are selected from the sample in accordance with their statistical properties. Classification applications are not limited to document retrieval, but may include document routing, screening, or disseminating functions. (Author)
