The clarinet repertoire of William Thomas McKinley is varied and interesting, but seldom performed today. The few recordings that exist were created by an elite contingency of soloists and chamber musicians who were close friends and colleagues with McKinley. Outside their premieres and these few recordings, his music has seldom been performed. While many of his works are challenging and engaging, most were never published and thus remain inaccessible. Through several engraving projects and performances, this dissertation brings light to a corner of the clarinet repertoire seldom explored and heard today. For this project, I have completed performance editions of several McKinley works and presented them on recital. I plan to make the editions themselves available through later publication. This will make his music more accessible for performers and audiences alike. A recital on McKinley’s influences, including Aaron Copland, Mel Powell, Gunther Schuller, and Lukas Foss, took place on December 7, 2018 in Gildenhorn Recital Hall. The recital on April 19, 2019 in Leah Smith Recital Hall concentrated on McKinley’s development and career trajectory, featuring For One, Mostly Blues, Two Romances for clarinet, violin, and piano, and Intermezzos No. 1 & 2. The final recital took place on May 4, 2019 in Ulrich Recital Hall and featured what could be considered his greatest works and clarinet duos, Clarinet Duets Book 1, Clarinet Concerto No. 2, and Clarinet Sonata. The recitals were recorded on compact discs and are archived within the Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM).

A laboratory set up was built analogous to that of the environment of the Galilean system. Previous work has focused on vapor deposition and shied away from bulk samples which more closely resemble the surface of Europa. The focus of this research has been the relationship between laboratory data to observational spectra collected. Data from various telescopes has given an indication of the species which exist on the surface of Europa. Linear spectral modeling has not been effective in identifying these species due to a lack of viable candidates. Chapter II focuses on the instrumentation and sample preparation for the laboratory set up. In Chapter III data is presented on the irradiation of sodium chloride at Europa like conditions and the features that arise with cryogenic irradiation. This data is compared to observational data from HST and provides strong evidence for the presences of sodium chloride (NaCl) on Europa's leading hemisphere. Chapter IV presents FTIR and UV/VIS data for the irradiation of sulfate salts suspected to be present on Europa. This presents one of the first instances of cyrogenic electron irradiation of sulfates compared to new data from JWST. Mechanisms for the trapping of carbon dioxide at both Europa and Ganymede have also been investigated. These experiments are paramount for understanding the composition of Europa’s ocean and can be utilized by the Europa Clipper team. Future experiments involving laboratory spectroscopy of carbon dioxide trapping are also highlighted. The use of cyrogenic gamma irradiation experiments and their feasibility are explored.

The Port Phillip Aboriginal Protectorate was established in 1838 on the instructions of the Colonial Office in London as an attempt to place colonisation in the newly settled Port Phillip district — now the state of Victoria — on a humanitarian footing. The Protectorate was established on the recommendation of the British House of Commons Aborigines Committee, which published the report of its investigation into the treatment of Indigenous people within the British Empire in 1837 (British House of Commons 1837).

The hippocampal formation plays an important role in spatial navigation and episodic memory. At the core of the neuroscience community's understanding of this role, are classes of functional cell types, such as place cells and grid cells. Despite being the subject of intense study for over half a century, how the complex recurrent circuitry of the hippocampal formation generates these functional classes, and how they interact with each other to support the critical cognitive processes the hippocampal formation underlies, is an area of open research. In this thesis, we present experimental and computational work aimed at addressing some aspects of these questions. First, we develop a novel technique to optically access the transverse plane of the hippocampus in vivo, allowing - for the first time - the neural activity of multiple subregions of the hippocampus to be simultaneously recorded. We utilize this tool to characterize functional and structural properties across the hippocampal circuit, finding stable and unstable populations of dendritic spines on the apical dendrites of CA1 pyramidal neurons and heterogeneity in the amount of spatial information encoded by place cells along the CA1-CA3 axis. Second, we test a long held assumption on properties of grid cells in medial entorhinal cortex, analyzing recent cutting-edge experimental data. We find evidence for the distribution of grid spacings and orientations in individual modules to be non-uniform, having small, but significant variation. Computational modeling leads us to conjecture that a grid code with such heterogeneity in its properties enables robust encoding of local spatial information. And third, we study the emergence of localized responses in artificial neural network models. We find that, as these local features form, the statistics of the internal representations of the network become increasingly non-Gaussian, in-line with theoretical work that has suggested this to be a general mechanism for drivi

William Thomas McClain was from the area along the Maury/Lewis County line and was born in Mt. Pleasant. He is shown wearing his uniform and holding an American flag. The postcard indicates it was from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. McClain entered military service on June 28, 1918 and was assigned to the 157th Depot Brig. at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He was discharged December 28, 1918 having never left the United States.
