Iron (Fe) speciation in marine sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) are widely used to investigate the role of Fe minerals in marine biogeochemical cycling and to reconstruct paleo-redox conditions. A traditional method for the determination of Fe speciation are sequential extractions, in which operationally defined Fe pools are dissolved by specific extraction solutions. More recently, many studies make use of synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), especially if little sample material is available or a high spatial resolution is required. However, few studies have systematically compared Fe speciation obtained by the two methods. Here, we report Fe speciation for marine sediments (both wet and freeze-dried) and SPM from contrasting marine environments (western Baltic Sea and Amazon shelf) obtained by sequential extraction and XANES. The two methods yield comparable results regarding the approximate proportion of reactive Fe ((oxyhydr)oxides, carbonate and sulfide minerals) in the total Fe pool and the extent to which reactive Fe minerals have been converted to pyrite. However, methodological issues associated with both approaches complicate a direct comparison of specific mineral groups. Pyrite concentrations obtained by XANES are lower than those obtained by extraction, which is attributed to an underestimation by XANES due to self-absorption effects and an overestimation by the chromium reduction method due to dissolution of reduced sulfur phases that are not associated with Fe. As substantial amounts of pyrite are oxidized during freeze-drying and sample storage, we recommend to analyze wet sediments in modern marine environments. The XANES spectra of Fe (oxyhydr)oxide and Fe(III)-containing (ferric) clay minerals are similar, which is why these components cannot be differentiated by XANES. Polyanion‐type phosphate materials, such as M₃V₂(PO₄)₃ (M = Li/Na/K), are promising as insertion‐type negative electrodes for monovalent‐ion batteries including Li/Na/K‐ion batteries (lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), and potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs)) with fast charging/discharging and distinct redox peaks. However, it remains a great challenge to understand the reaction mechanism of materials upon monovalent‐ion insertion. Here, triclinic Mg₃V₄(PO₄)₆/carbon composite (MgVP/C) with high thermal stability is synthesized via ball‐milling and carbon‐thermal reduction method and applied as a pseudocapacitive negative electrode in LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs. In operando and ex situ studies demonstrate the guest ion‐dependent reaction mechanisms of MgVP/C upon monovalent‐ion storage due to different sizes. MgVP/C undergoes an indirect conversion reaction to form Mg⁰, V⁰, and Li₃PO₄ in LIBs, while in SIBs/PIBs the material only experiences a solid solution with the reduction of V³⁺ to V²⁺. Moreover, in LIBs, MgVP/C delivers initial lithiation/delithiation capacities of 961/607 mAh g⁻¹ (30/19 Li⁺ ions) for the first cycle, despite its low initial Coulombic efficiency, fast capacity decay for the first 200 cycles, and limited reversible insertion/deinsertion of 2 Na⁺/K⁺ ions in SIBs/PIBs. This work reveals a new pseudocapacitive material and provides an advanced understanding of polyanion phosphate negative material for monovalent‐ion batteries with guest ion‐dependent energy storage mechanisms.

The structure of Ge20Sb10S70, Ge23Sb12S65 and Ge26Sb13S61 glasses was investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge and Sb K-edges as well as Raman scattering. For each composition, large scale structural models were obtained by fitting simultaneously diffraction and EXAFS data sets in the framework of the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation technique. Ge and S atoms have 4 and 2 nearest neighbors, respectively. The structure of these glasses can be described by the chemically ordered network model: Ge-S and Sb-S bonds are always preferred. These two bond types adequately describe the structure of the stoichiometric glass while S-S bonds can also be found in the S-rich composition. Raman scattering data show the presence of Ge-Ge, Ge-Sb and Sb-Sb bonds in the S-deficient glass but only Ge-Sb bonds are needed to fit diffraction and EXAFS datasets. A significant part of the Sb-S pairs has 0.3–0.4 Å longer bond distance than the usually accepted covalent bond length (∼2.45 Å). From this observation it was inferred that a part of Sb atoms have more than 3 S neighbors.
