Abstract

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) currently represents a robust imaging technique for the detection, quantification and characterization of coronary atherosclerosis. However, CCTA remains a challenging task requiring both high spatial and temporal resolution to provide motion-free images of the coronary arteries. Several CCTA features, such as low attenuation, positive remodeling, spotty calcification, napkin-ring and high pericoronary fat attenuation index have been proved as associated to high-risk plaques. This review aims to explore the role of CCTA in the characterization of high-risk atherosclerotic plaque and the recent advancements in CCTA technologies with a focus on radiomics plaque analysis.

Abstract

Understanding the dynamics and distribution of medicinal drugs in living cells is essential for the design and discovery of treatments. The tools available for revealing this information are, however, extremely limited. Here, we report the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) endoscopy, using plasmonic nanowires as SERS probes, to monitor the intracellular fate and dynamics of a common chemo-drug, doxorubicin, in A549 cancer cells. The unique spatio-temporal resolution of this technique reveals unprecedented information on the mode of action of doxorubicin: its localization in the nucleus, its complexation with medium components, and its intercalation with DNA as a function of time. Notably, we were able to discriminate these factors for the direct administration of doxorubicin or the use of a doxorubicin delivery system. The results reported here show that SERS endoscopy may have an important future role in medicinal chemistry for studying the dynamics and mechanism of action of drugs in cells.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether structured reports (SRs) of MRI in patients with inherited neuromuscular disorders (IND) provide more clinically relevant information than non-structured reports (NSRs) and whether neuroradiologists' expertise affects completeness of reports. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Lower limbs' MRI reports of patients with IND produced by neuroradiologists with different level of expertise (> 15 years vs. < 15 years of experience in reading IND-MRI) before and after implementation of a SR template were included. Reports were assessed for the presence of 9 key features relevant for IND management. Reports and images were evaluated by neurologists who assessed: disease-specific muscular involvement pattern; presence of sufficient information to order the appropriate genetic/diagnostic tests; presence of sufficient information to make therapeutic decision/perform biopsy and necessity to review MRI images. Mann-Whitney and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare the number of key features for NSR and SR and neurologists' answers for reports produced by neuroradiologists with different experience. RESULTS: Thirty-one SRs and 101 NSRs were reviewed. A median of 8 and 6 key features was present in SR and NSR, respectively (p value < 0.0001). When reports were produced by less expert neuroradiologists, neurologists recognized muscular involvement pattern, had sufficient information for clinical decision-making/perform biopsy more often with SR than NSR (p values: < 0.0001), and needed to evaluate images less often with SR (p value: 0.0001). When reports produced by expert neuroradiologists were evaluated, no significant difference in neurologists' answers was observed. CONCLUSION: SR of IND-MRI contained more often clinically relevant information considered important for disease management than NSR. Radiologist's expertise affects completeness of NSR reports.

Our in vitro studies showed that a combination of amphotericin B and terbinafine had synergistic effects against the majority of melanized fungi associated with chromoblastomycosis (CBM) and similar infections, including those with Cladophialophora carrionii , Cladophialophora arxii , Exophiala dermatitidis , Exophiala spinifera , Fonsecaea monophora , Fonsecaea nubica , Fonsecaea pedrosoi , and Phialophora verrucosa. This drug combination could provide an option for the treatment of severe or unresponsive cases of CBM, particularly in cases due to species of Fonsecaea and Cladophialophora .

Abstract

The BaBar Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is a five layer device, made from double-sided silicon strip detectors and read out via a custom time-over-threshold circuit, the AToM chip. The SVT is an essential part of the physics program of BaBar, and is able to reconstruct B meson decay vertices with a precision sufficient to measure time-dependent CP violating asymmetries at the PEP-II asymmetric e+e- collider. This report will give an overview of the SVT, with particular focus on the performance of the SVT, which has been taking colliding beam data since May 1999.

7. Endovascular repair of delayed giant iliac pseudoaneurysm following simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation with preserved allografts function

Abstract

We present a case of endovascular repair of a giant iliac artery pseudoaneurysm following simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation. A 64-year-old female presented to the emergency room with right flank pain 10 months after kidney and pancreas transplantation on the right iliac axis. Investigations revealed a 9.5 cm pseudoaneurysm originating from the anastomosis between the graft renal artery and the external iliac artery. The pseudoaneurysm was successfully excluded emergently with a covered stent graft preserving the normal perfusion and function of both transplanted organs. Endovascular repair may be a good and low-invasive option in selected patients with transplant renal artery pseudoaneurysm

Abstract

The BaBar Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is designed to provide the high-precision vertexing necessary for making measurements of CP violation at the SLAC B-Factory PEP-II. The instrument consists of five layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors and has been installed in the BaBar experiment and taking colliding beam data since May 1999. An overview of the design as well as performance and experience from the initial running will be presented.

Abstract

The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory consists of five layers of double-sided, AC-coupled silicon strip detectors. The detectors are readout with a custom IC, capable of simultaneous acquisition, digitization and transmission of data. The SVT geometry is shown and the construction phases of its modules are described in detail, with emphasis on the bending procedures needed for the arch-modules of the outer layers.

Abstract

The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) for the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory is a 5-layer device based on double-sided, AC-coupled silicon strip detectors. It is read out by a custom IC, the AToM chip, that can simultaneously acquire, digitize and transmit data. The main purpose of the SVT is to accurately measure the decay position of the B mesons that are produced, which is essential for extracting CP asymmetries. Here, we report on the SVT design as well as progress on its fabrication and assembly.

Abstract

This article explores the potential of kernel-based techniques for discriminating on-specification and off-specification batch runs, combining kernel-partial least squares discriminant analysis and three common approaches to analyze batch data by means of bilinear models: landmark features extraction, batchwise unfolding, and variablewise unfolding. Gower s idea of pseudo-sample projection is exploited to recover the contribution of the initial variables to the final model and visualize those having the highest discriminant power. The results show that the proposed approach provides an efficient fault discrimination and enables a correct identification of the discriminant variables in the considered case studies.

Abstract

Uno sguardo alle esperienze di altri paesi proponendo soluzioni concrete per superare la spirale negativa tra il riequilibrio dei conti pubblici e l’adozione di politiche fiscali recessive. La conclusione è che non c’è alternativa alla crescita per innovazione, come insegnano le esperienze di successo di Silicon Valley, Finlandia e Israele. Ecco allora un vero e proprio programma di riforme per far ripartire il credito, dare autonomia alle scuole, digitalizzare la pubblica amministrazione e non solo. Un piano con cui dovrebbe confrontarsi chi è oggi al governo del Paese.

Abstract

A direction finding architecture that implements an innovative number system encoding of phase samples, the robust symmetric number system (RSNS), is described. The RSNS processes Gray Code properties and provides significant advantages over conventional phase scanning methods and other symmetric number system encoding techniques. The design equations for RSNS array are presented. Simulation results for a prototype RSNS array are shown, and its performance compared to previously published results for other number system encoded direction finding architectures.

Abstract

A new interferometer direction finding (DF) arry architecture based on the optimum symmetrical number system (OSNS) is presented. OSNS arrays are capable of unambiguous high resolution DF over a wide bandwidth and field of view with as few as three elements, with multiple baseline options. A three element array was design, fabricated and tested at 8.5 GHz to verify the OSNS concepts experimentally.

Sequences of mth order symmetric statistics are examined for convergence in law. Under appropriate conditions, a limiting distribution exists and is equivalent to that of a linear combination of products of Hermite polynomials of independent N(0,1) random variables.
