The Saharan silver ant Cataglyphis bombycina is one of the terrestrial living organisms best adapted to tolerate high temperatures. It has recently been shown that the hairs covering the ant's dorsal body part are responsible for its silvery appearance. The hairs have a triangular cross-section with two corrugated surfaces allowing a high optical reflection in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) range of the spectrum while maximizing heat emissivity in the mid-infrared (MIR). Those two effects account for remarkable thermoregulatory properties, enabling the ant to maintain a lower thermal steady state and to cope with the high temperature of its natural habitat. In this paper, we further investigate how geometrical optical and high reflection properties account for the bright silver color of C. bombycina. Using optical ray-tracing models and attenuated total reflection (ATR) experiments, we show that, for a large range of incidence angles, total internal reflection (TIR) conditions are satisfied on the basal face of each hair for light entering and exiting through its upper faces. The reflection properties of the hairs are further enhanced by the presence of the corrugated surface, giving them an almost total specular reflectance for most incidence angles. We also show that hairs provide an almost 10-fold increase in light reflection, and we confirm experimentally that they are responsible for a lower internal body temperature under incident sunlight. Mesoporous Bragg stacks are able to change color upon infiltration or displacement of liquid compounds inside their porous structure. Reversible switching from transparency to coloration offers additional functionality. Based on Bruggeman's effective medium theory, we derive a transparency master equation, which is valid for bilayers of arbitrary host materials and pore-filling compounds. The transparency condition fixes pore volume fractions such that the effective refractive index is homogenized through the bilayer, hence, through arbitrary layered optical media built from this bilayer. This general concept is applied to the case of switching of hygrochromic coatings made of mesoporous mixed oxide Bragg stacks.

The layer design is inspired by the microstructure found in the firefly Photuris sp. The actual dimensions and material composition have been optimized to take into account the high refractive index of the GaN diode stack. This two-dimensional pattern contrasts other designs by its unusual profile, its larger dimensions and the fact that it can be tailored to an existing diode design rather than requiring a complete redesign of the diode geometry. The gain of light extraction reaches values up to 55% with respect to the reference unprocessed LED.

With rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) simulations, the optimal ratio between the period and height of the bio-inspired structures is calculated [1]. The optimal geometry for this structure is changed in comparison to the firefly, but still remain micrometrical and simple without multiple depositions, colloids etc. like in the reproduction of butterfly wings structures found on the Papilio Blumei for instance [2]. In the case of the firefly microstructure fabrication, the use of standard optical lithography is well suited. The gain of light extraction reaches values up to 55% with respect to the reference unprocessed LED.

Since their first use, solid-state lighting devices have received a growing interest and popularity from engineers, physicists, industry and consumers. Their promising internal efficiencies, i.e. the high conversion rates of injected current to produced light, make them very appealing for the replacement of incandescent or fluorescent light sources. The major challenge for the development of these light sources is to enhance the external light extraction: the active material of light emitting diodes is in general a semiconductor with a high refractive index, which considerably limits the extraction of light into free space due to total reflection. This lack of high external efficiency has generated an important amount of research and publications. Very different approaches have been considered to enhance the external light extraction efficiency: photonic crystals, photonic structures inside and above the active material, graded refractive index layer to reduce the high index contrast between the active material and air, plasmonic resonances and more. In the present research, the bioluminescent organ's morphology of a Panamanian firefly is used as a source of inspiration to improve the light extraction efficiency of light-emitting devices. The internal efficiencies of light-emitting devices are nowadays very high, yet, the overall efficiency is limited by the total internal reflection due to the high refractive index of the incident medium. Fireflies emit light in their dense bioluminescent organ and light extraction is equally limited by total internal reflection. During their million years of evolution, the bioluminescent organ had the time to improve both, its internal functioning and its light extraction efficiency. The thorough analysis of the lantern's morphology shows several structures added on the light path, that could influence the light extraction efficiency. Ce manque d'efficacité externe a généré une activité de recherche considérable avec une grande variété d'approches différentes pour résoudre le problème: cristaux photoniques, structures photoniques dans et au dessus du milieu actif, couches d'indice de réfraction adaptative pour réduire le contraste élevé entre le milieu incident et émergent. L'organe bioluminescent d'une luciole du Panama est utilisé comme source d'inspiration pour l'amélioration de l'efficacité d'extraction de lumière des diodes dans la recherche présentée dans ce manuscrit. La lumière émise par les lucioles est générée chimiquement dans son organe bioluminescent, qui présente un matériau dense par rapport à milieu émergent (l'air). Pendant les millions d'années d'évolution, l'organe bioluminescent a pu avoir le temps d'améliorer son fonctionnement interne ainsi que l'extraction de lumière, c'est-à-dire son efficacité externe. L'étude morphologique de la lanterne a montré différentes structures qui peuvent influencer la propagation de la lumière entre l'organe émetteur et l'air libre. Les écailles inclinées forment un réseau micrométrique, bidimensionnel et asymétrique. Les simulations associées montrent que cette structure augmente considérablement l'extraction de lumière. Autrefois reléguées à des marchés ciblés et de faible volume, les diodes électroluminescentes (DELs) révolutionnent toutefois déjà le monde de l’éclairage grâce à la spectaculaire croissance de leur efficacité énergétique et leur durée de vie record. Les projections annoncent des avancées technologiques majeures concernant les DELs d’ici à 2025 [1]. Cependant, plusieurs problèmes technologiques limitent l’efficacité d’extraction de photons des DELs émettant sous les 400 nm en raison de l’emplacement de la zone radiative : se trouvant à l’intérieur du semiconducteur, une fraction considérable de photons (95%) reste piégée au sein de la diode à cause de la réflexion totale interne [2]. Le CRN2 possède toutes les infrastructures nécessaires pour la fabrication de DELs bleues et UV. De la photolithographie à la gravure de type ICP du nitrure de gallium (GaN), plusieurs techniques de fabrications ont été mises au point pour l’élaboration de DELs. Un solide procédé est disponible à l’Université de Sherbrooke permettant ainsi l’étude de l’extraction de la lumière de DELs optimisées au sein d’une collaboration internationale.

Elytra of beetles or scales of butterflies are materials that, from natural selection, evolved amazing properties (rigidity, hydrophobicity, etc.). In addition, they manipulate the light to target a specific color. The most common is the pigmentary coloration, relative to the electronic structure of the material, but the structural coloration, relative to the geometry of the material, cannot be neglected. Among the pigments stand the fluorescent molecules, able to absorb an incident flux and to emit a lower energy flux. The fluorescent sources confinement in a photonic structure modifies the phenomenon properties (incident flux absorption, emission spatial distribution, etc.). Industry, that tends to manufacture products with well-targeted features, uses a large variety of materials. The limitation comes from a lack of imagination for designing the structures in order to obtain a specific effect and from an inefficiency to generate them with the nowadays available technology. Conversely, nature offers a wide range of architectures, built from a narrow range of materials. Bio-inspiration combines both fields in order to synthesize new products. This project focused on the precise context of fluorescence confined in a natural photonic structure. Before artificially transpose the observations of nature, it was crucial to understand the underlying physics. Experimentally, the integumentary structures of some insects have been described using microscopy techniques. Reflection and emission properties were studied using angular and spectrophotometric measurements. Numerical simulations based on the scattering matrix method were conducted in order to explain the observations., Les élytres de coléoptères ou les écailles de papillons sont des matériaux qui, suite à l’évolution, présentent des propriétés étonnantes (rigidité, hydrophobicité, etc.). De plus, ils manipulent la lumière pour fournir une coloration précise. Cette dernière peut être pigmentaire ou structurale, selon qu’elle est élaborée par la structure électronique ou la géométrie du matériau. Parmi les pigments, on trouve des molécules fluorescentes, capables d’absorber un flux incident et d’émettre un flux de plus faible énergie. Le confinement de telles sources dans une structure photonique modifie les propriétés du phénomène (absorption du flux incident, distribution spatiale de l’émission, etc.). L’industrie, tentant de fabriquer des produits avec certaines spécificités, utilise un large éventail de matériaux. La limitation provient d’un manque d’imagination sur les structures à adopter pour atteindre tel ou tel effet. A contrario, la nature offre une vaste gamme d’architectures, bâties à partir de matériaux analogues. La bio-inspiration tente de réunir ces deux domaines en vue de synthétiser des produits inédits. Ce projet s’attache au contexte particulier de la fluorescence confinée dans une structure photonique naturelle. Avant de transposer artificiellement les observations de la nature, il est crucial d’en comprendre la physique sous-jacente. Les structures tégumentaires des insectes furent décrites au moyen de la microscopie. Leurs propriétés de réflexion et d’émission furent étudiées à l’aide de mesures spectrophotométriques angulaires. The aim of our Ph.D. work consisted in analyzing the stereo-electronic properties of various external donors (EDs) considered alone and within a realistic model of complete catalyst to understand better the role played by these organic molecules in the activity and stereo specificity of the catalyst. At first, we compared the stereo-electronic properties of different EDs between them as well as with those of the di-isobutyl phthalate used as internal donor. This study allowed us to bring to light several characteristics the ED should have to be competitive. Then, we optimized the geometry of a monometallic active site’s “3 sites” model alone and with the various EDs by the QM/MM method. We showed clearly that ED modifies the geometry of the active site to allow the monomer complexation and that the choice of the ED influences the number of potential active configurations for the isotactic propylene polymerisation., (DOCSC02) -- FUNDP, 2010

Two topics were developed during this doctoral thesis : the hygrochromic phenomenon and the production of peculiar visual effects due to multiscale structures. Both subjects found their origin in the study of natural photonic structures, improved through Evolution. We first studied four coleoptera, which elytra changed color due to the humidity level of their environment. This hygrochromic phenomenon originated from structures which were unique to each insect. We then analyzed the peculiar coloration mechanism of four other insects. Their colors emerged from the interaction of the light with structures at different length scales. A computational code was implemented to modelize such interactions, based on the Monte-Carlo approach and on the ray-tracing method. It appeared clearly through these studies that there was a large diversity of structures in Nature which produced quite uncommon visual effects. This creativity compensated for the lack of available material to create the necessary contrast of refractive index. The state-of-the-art fabrication techniques allowed us to benefit from this creativity, with the advantage of having a much larger variety of materials available., Les études développées dans cette thèse de doctorat reposent sur deux axes de recherche principaux : le phénomène d'hygrochromisme et la production d'effets visuels particuliers dus à une structure multi-échelle. Cependant, ces deux axes reposent sur un même principe, à savoir la recherche de structures photoniques originales développées après des millions d'années d'évolution biologique. Dans un premier temps, ont été étudiés quatre coléoptères dont les élytres sont hygrochromes, c'est-à-dire qu'ils changent de couleur en fonction du taux d'humidité de leur environnement. Bien que le phénomène soit similaire pour chacune de ces espèces, en ce sens que c'est l'apport d'eau qui modifie la coloration perçue, les structures étudiées se sont avérées parfois très différentes, tant par leur mécanisme de fonctionnement que par les couleurs observées. Quatre insectes ont également été analysés dans la seconde partie, cette fois pour l'aspect multi-échelle de la structure à l'origine de leur coloration. L'étude de ces quatre espèces montre tout l'intérêt de la prise en compte de toutes les échelles intervenant dans la production d'une coloration d'origine structurale. Le développement d'un code de calcul basé sur une approche de type Monte-Carlo et sur le ray-tracing montre déjà des résultats probants, en accord avec les résultats expérimentaux. Par le biais de ces recherches, il apparait clairement que la Nature dispose d'une large diversité de structures produisant des effets visuels inattendus. Cette créativité se devait de compenser le manque de matériaux à disposition. Concernant les insectes étudiés, les structures photoniques sont en effet toutes construites à partir d'un seul biopolymère, la chitine. Glass substrates coated with a stainless steel-tin double layer were prepared in order to achieve the inverse greenhouse effect. The measurements of the optical properties of the samples indicate that the needed specific spectral selectivity is available. Practical tests of radiative cooling were performed during clear night using a blackbody radiator covered by the coated plate with glass facing the sky. The blackbody temperature was observed to be 6.0 degrees C below that of the ambient, and the cooling power was estimated to be 27.9 W/m(2). Diurnal measurements indicated that cooling of the blackbody radiator is achieved except for approximately 6 hours around noon. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Les cristaux photoniques sont des matériaux aux propriétés exceptionnelles : ils peuvent posséder une Bande Interdite Photonique (BIP) empêchant complètement la propagation d'ondes de certaines fréquences en leur sein. Ils peuvent donc confiner et guider la lumière avec une efficacité inégalables par d'autres matériaux, telles les fibres optiques classiques ; ils sont aussi capables d'inhiber l'émission spontanée d'espèces luminescentes, de favoriser l'effet Laser… Ils sont enfin pressentis pour être les acteurs principaux d'une révolution technologique consistant à remplacer l'électron par le photon comme transmetteur d'information. Depuis 1987 et les premiers travaux théoriques les concernant, les cristaux photoniques ont fait l'objet d'une grande attention de la part de la communauté scientifique. Différentes méthodes physiques de type lithographiques ont été développées mais la lenteur et le coût important de ces techniques a mené au développement d'une autre voie de synthèse basée sur l'utilisation d'opales et de leurs répliques, les opales inverses, qui peuvent posséder une BIP. Cette thèse porte sur la conception de ces matériaux au remarquable potentiel. En particulier, nous avons orienté notre travail vers le principal défi actuel de ce domaine de recherche : l'obtention d'une BIP dans les longueurs d'ondes UV-Visibles. La stratégie scientifique mise en oeuvre comportait ainsi quatre étapes : la synthèse des colloïdes, leur assemblage en opales, l'infiltration de l'opale à l'aide d'un matériau hautement réfringent et son élimination afin de révéler la structure opaline inverse. Des colloïdes silicatés et polymériques aux propriétés structurales (taille, polydispersité) parfaitement contrôlées ont été synthétisés, respectivement par la méthode de Stöber et par polymérisation en émulsion sans surfactant. We develop on the one hand, theoretical tools allowing us to extract the molecular conformation from sum-frequency and second harmonic generation spectroscopy (SFG & SHG) data. First, the SHG spectroscopy is employed to characterize the reorientation of rhodamine 6G dye molecules induce by the friction of a moving fluid at the solid-liquid interface. This observation enables to revisit the “no slip” condition of the fluid mechanics theory. Then, we study the formation kinetics of patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAM) realized by micro-contact printing (µcp). We demonstrate the possibility of building highly structured SAMs within time durations as short as 1 second. These layers possess a conformational quality identical to those resulting from standard immersion methods and may furthermore present molecular patterns of micrometric dimensions. Next, we show the possibility of realizing solid supported patterns of amphiphilic monolayers by combining µcp and Langmuir-Blodgett methods. Finally, the development of a SFG microscope is presented along with the first images of SAMs patterns realized by µcp method., Nous avons développé les outils théoriques nécessaires nous permettant d’extraire la conformation moléculaire de données fournies par la spectroscopie de génération de fréquence-somme et du second harmonique (SFG & SHG). La génération du second harmonique nous a permis de caractériser la réorientation d’un colorant (molécule de rhodamine 6G), physisorbé à l’interface solide-liquide, et cela consécutivement à la friction induite par un fluide en mouvement. Cette observation permet de reconsidérer la condition de «non glissement» établie dans la théorie de la mécanique des fluides. Par la suite, nous avons étudié la cinétique de formation de motifs de monocouches auto-assemblées (SAM), ces derniers étant réalisés par micro-impression de contact (µcp). La possibilité de former des SAM hautement structurées endéans des durées d’impression aussi brèves que 1 seconde, a été démontrée. Celles-ci font état d’une qualité de conformation identique à celle résultant des méthodes d’immersion classiques, et peuvent de surcroit présenter des motifs moléculaires de dimensions micrométriques. Par après, nous montrons la possibilité de produire des motifs de molécules amphiphiles sur un substrat solide en combinant les méthodes de µcp et de Langmuir-Blodgett. The male Troides magellanus--a birdwing butterfly that lives in a restricted area of the Philippines--concentrates on its hindwings at least two distinct optical processes that contribute to its exceptional visual attraction. The first is the very bright uniform yellow coloration caused by a pigment which generates yellow-green fluorescence, and the other is a blue-green iridescence which results from light diffraction at grazing emergence under a specific illumination. Detailed optical measurements reveal that these optical effects are correlated, the fluorescence being enhanced by illuminations conditions that favor the occurrence of the iridescence. These effects are analyzed, with the conclusion that both of them depend on the same optical device: a one-dimensional microribs grating which appear on the sides of the ridges that run along the yellow scales.

Contribution à l'étude de la réflectance et du confinement des modes dans les systèmes optiques stratifiés Résumé : Ce travail prolonge les études du changement de réflectivité des systèmes optiques stratifiés sous des contraintes mécanique et électrique. D'abord, nous quantifions le déplacement de la bande interdite photonique suite à une modification de l'angle d'incidence. Il en dérive une technologie bio-inspirée. Ensuite, c'est un champ électrique externe qui contrôle les propriétés de réflexion et de polarisation d'une multicouche construite à partir de cristaux liquides. Enfin, nous distinguons deux manières de confiner l'énergie électromagnétique. Ce travail s'attache à comprendre la nature des modes qui se propagent à la surface des milieux stratifiés. Par ailleurs, il montre que l'association de matériau gauche et de matériau droit pour former un guide d'onde permet de réduire la vitesse de la lumière de plusieurs ordres de grandeur. Contribution to the study of the reflectance and the mode confinement in optical stratified systems Abstract : This work extends the studies of change in reflectance in optical stratified systems under mechanical and electrical constraints. In the first part, we quantify the shift of the photonic bandgap following, a modification in the angle of incidence. We define the tools for the design of bio-inspired Bragg mirrors. In the second part, we adjust the reflection properties of a multilayer stack made of liquid crystals with an external electric field. Furthermore, we examine two distinct ways of producing light confinement. First, we contribute to the understanding of the nature of electromagnetic modes propagating at the surface of stratified media. The microscopic structure of the hard external parts of the body of the iridescent blue-violet chaffer beetle Hoplia coerulea is studied using scanning electron microscopy. The blue iridescence is shown to originate from the structure of the squamae within scales covering the dorsal side of the beetle. The internal structure of the scales shows a stack of planar sheets, separated by a well-organized network of spacers, a structure which belongs to the family of the layer-by-layer photonic crystals. The blue iridescence is easily explained by a planar multilayer approximation model, deduced from the observed three-dimensional structure.

Arsenic, antimony, and bismuth, three group-V elements which crystallize in the rhomboedral A7 structure, are well-known semimetals. Going from As to Sb to Bi, the unit-cell parameters increase, as well as the strength of the spin-orbit interaction, leading to quantitative differences in the electronic properties of these materials. By means of the standard Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham densityfunctional approach using the Ceperley-Alder exchange-correlation energy as parametrized by Perdew and Zunger, we have carefully compared the following properties of each semimetal: band structure, electronic density of charge, density of states, and Fermi surface. The role of spin-orbit coupling, which is noticeable in Bi, has been emphasized. The numerical accuracy of the calculation has been strictly controlled, in order to provide reliable comparison between theoretical results and experimental data for the density of states, number of free carriers, and Fermi surface. The good agreement obtained for Fermi surfaces is somewhat unexpected.

Bismuth, the heaviest group V semimetal, exhibit strong spin-orbit coupling effects. In the framework of the density functional formalism, the authors present an ab initio calculation of the bismuth band structure, using non-local pseudo-potentials, and including the spin-orbit interaction. The absence of this contribution leads to unrealistic overlaps between the bands close to the Fermi level, while correctly accounting for spin-orbit allows the experimental bismuth Fermi surface results to be reproduced.
