The increasing number of foreign residents in Japan is a positive factor contributing to the country’s sustainability, but it also poses policy and social challenges arising from inadequate mutual cultural understanding. Notably, with the trends of labor migration and international student mobility, the Vietnamese population in Japan has rapidly increased ten-fold from over 44,000 in 2011 to 450,000 in 2021 (MOJ, 2021), becoming the second most populous foreigner group. In Japan, there seems to be an increased interest in researching about Vietnam and Vietnamese people. We conducted a rapid literature review to investigate this trend by searching Google Scholar using relevant keywords for the period from 1965 to 2023. Our results revealed a clear increasing trend in the number of publications conducted in Japan related to "betonamujinron," or the field of study that focuses on the characteristics, culture, customs, and values of Vietnamese people. We found that the trend has been particularly prominent over the last decade. Our research suggests that there is an increasing interest in Japan in understanding foreign characteristics and culture. This trend can help promote mutual cultural understanding and pave the way for more effective policies that can address the challenges associated with the growing diversity of Japan's population.

BackgroundFamilies use social media group chats to connect with each other about daily life and to share information. Although cancer is not a frequent topic of conversation in family settings, the adoption of mobile technology in the family context presents a novel opportunity to promote cancer prevention information. To the best of our knowledge, few studies have used private social media group chats to promote cancer prevention information to family members.ObjectiveIn this formative study, we investigated how family group chat platforms can be leveraged to encourage colorectal cancer screening, human papillomavirus vaccination, and cervical cancer screening among intergenerational Vietnamese American families. This study aimed to cocreate a family-based communication intervention for introducing cancer screening information in family group chats. We sought to understand family members' motivations for using group chats, family dynamics and conversation patterns, and group chat experiences and cultural norms for interacting with family members.MethodsOverall, 20 audio-recorded and semistructured interviews were conducted with young Vietnamese adults. The study was conducted between August and October 2018. Participants were Vietnamese Americans; aged between 18 and 44 years; living in Orange County, California; had an existing family group chat; and expressed an interest in becoming family health advocates. Data were analyzed using a framework analysis.ResultsIn total, 13 (65%) of the 20 young adults reported having >1 group chat with their immediate and extended family. Preventive health was not a typical topic of family conversations, but food, family announcements, personal updates, humorous videos or photos, and current events were. Young adults expressed openness to initiating conversations with family members about cancer prevention; however, they also raised concerns that may influence family members' receptivity to the messages. Objective: We examined the association between care recipients physical, mental, and cognitive health conditions and caregivers psychological distress in Vietnamese older care recipients and their caregivers.Methods: The Vietnamese Aging and Care Survey was developed for care recipients, and adult-child and spousal caregivers, and inquired about their sociodemographics and health-related variables.Results: Data were collected on 58 caregiver-care recipient dyads. Adult-child and spousal caregivers were on average 43 and 70 years-old respectively. The vast majority were female (76%) and born in Vietnam (97%). Adult-child caregivers reported more caregiver burden than spousal caregivers. Care recipients were on average 75 years-old. Care recipients of adult-child caregivers reported more depressive symptoms than care recipients of spousal caregivers and were more likely to have mild dementia. Care recipients health had no effect on caregiver depressive symptoms but their educational attainment was associated with caregiver burden and depressive symptoms.Conclusions: This study showed care recipients and caregivers years of education were positively associated with caregivers psychological distress. Vietnamese families lived in ethnic enclaves and shared caregiving responsibilities within the family. However, using available outside resources may alleviate psychological distress of not only caregivers but also families as a whole.Clinical Implications: Healthcare professionals should encourage educated caregivers and educated care recipients to use outside resources to ease caregiving duties.

After the Vietnam War, 1.3 million Vietnamese migrated to the U.S. where they are the fourth largest Asian American subgroup. However, little is known about their health compared to other Asian subgroups. As such, we developed the Vietnamese Aging and Care Survey to understand older Vietnamese immigrants' health in Houston, Texas (N=132). We examined how social support moderated the relationship between their physical disability and mental health (depressive symptoms and loneliness). Most respondents rated their health as fair/poor and more than half lived in extended family households or senior housing in ethnic enclaves. Having more physical disabilities was associated with higher depressive symptoms and loneliness, but higher social support moderated the effect of physical disability on loneliness. Local policymakers and stakeholders might strategize using the existing culturally and linguistically appropriate daycare centers and home and community-based services to mitigate depression and loneliness among older Vietnamese immigrants with physical disabilities.

Lifecourse transitions from adulthood into older age are particularly complex for transnationalmigrants, bringing additional challenges and opportunities. Adding to the growing literature on ageing and migration, this article illustrates the ways ICTs facilitate the transnational lifecourse transitions of Vietnamese migrant grandparents in Australia through lifecourse digital learning. Research findings highlight the crucial role that digital citizenship plays in supporting migrant grandparents' adaptation to increasingly mobile lives through practices of digital kinning and digital homing. These practices include using technological tools to maintain social support networks, exchange transnational caregiving, tackle language, navigation, and social integration barriers, and consume culturally relevant media, all of which support migrant identities and belongings. Findings confirm the importance of ICTs in promoting lifecourse digital learning for older migrants who are often stereotyped for their poor learning capacities and ability to adapt to new living arrangements because of their older age.

This thesis is a survey of four Vietnamese-American artists, whose queer identifications and disidentifications trouble easy categories of identity. The Vietnamese refugee and the queer figure have largely been overdetermined by minoritizing forces, which is to say that the refugee has been understood as a consequence of United States military intervention, and the queer figure has been understood as a corrupting, infectious monster. These identities themselves are not inherently challenging to the dominant mode of history, in which the heterosexual white male imposes his will on the world and contains these racial and sexual others in their categorical confines. However, it is in the mobilization of these identities in tandem that the works of Mimi Thi Nguyen, Hanh Thi Pham, Nguyen Tan Hoang, and Viet Le endeavor towards truth’s undoing. These artists and creators utilize convolutions of pop-cultural signs and signifiers, looking towards their respective stars, divas, and outlaws to embody an aesthetic of affect, rather than straightforward auto-ethnography. Mimi Thi Nguyen’s 1997 zine evolution of a race riot weaponizes Hanh Thi Pham’s unflinching self portrait, Misbegotten No More (1991-2) as the publication’s cover. This serves Nguyen not as an academic citation of queer Vietnamese women, but rather as a borrowing of Pham’s affective power recontextualized as a de-individualized punk feminist icon. This mobilized Pham’s rejection of gender and the state from the fine art sphere into the subcultural networks of D.I.Y. punk publication, where her iconography as a racial, gendered, and sexual outlaw was virally popular. Nguyen Tan Hoang’s auto-ethnographic documentary PIRATED (2000) on VHS tells the story of his departure from Vietnam at the age of 7, getting attacked by Thai Pirates, and ultimately saved by German Sailors. In früheren Studien zum L2-Wortschatzerwerb wurden die Auswirkungen des visuellen Kontexts auf das Lernen und die Verarbeitung von Wörtern und Kollokationen in der L2 untersucht. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die Erstsprache einen positiven Transfer auf das Lernen einer Zweitsprache hat, wenn die Wörter Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen. Darüber hinaus wurden die Einflüsse der kognitiven Fähigkeiten der Lernenden und ihres Erwerbsalters (AoA) auf das L2-Vokabellernen unter verschiedenen Bedingungen des L2-Vokabellernens festgestellt. It was found that L1 has a positive transfer in L2 learning when words have similarities. Furthermore, the influences of learners’ cognitive ability and their age of acquisition (AoA) in L2 vocabulary learning have been found in diverse L2 vocabulary learning conditions. The present dissertation aimed to further investigate the effects of visual context and transfer on L2 learning, as well as how cognitive ability and AoA influence any such effects in a particular L2 vocabulary learning context. In detail, we investigated event depiction (i.e., non-linguistic visual context) effects and L1–L2 transfer effects on L2 phrasal vocabulary (i.e., verb-noun phrases) learning for adult beginners. We conducted short-term L2 vocabulary learning experiments during which we measured reaction times. Two other research questions examined whether there are relationships between learners’ AoA or their cognitive ability and their L2 vocabulary learning success in a short-term L2 learning setting. Results showed adult L2 beginners benefited from visual depictions in L2 vocabulary learning: They were more accurate and faster in event-present learning conditions than in event-absent learning conditions. These effects were not only replicated with young adults aged 18 to 31 in three experiments, but they also extended to early and late middle-aged adults aged 32 to 65. The prior research suggested that the L1–L2 similarity might influence L2 learning, but not in our L2 learning context. In addition, the AoA of subjects was manipulated, which resulted in young adults performing in the cognitive test and L2 learning tasks best compared to the other two groups. The article is composed statistically using maps of all types, documents on marital status, family records, and administrative documents (collectively referred to as Vietnamese documents). Place names with elements of Tay origin in Tuyen Quang province based on 4 districts (Chiem Hoa, Lam Binh, Na Hang, and Son Duong) were researched, with the intention of gaining insight into place names with original elements that come from ethnic minority languages in Vietnam, being read and written in different ways. The difference in the phonetics and writing of Tay language compared to Vietnamese, is one of the reasons that place names with elements of Tay origin in Tuyen Quang province, are used inconsistently, resulting in different ways of reading, and writing a place name. Therefore, there is a need to standardize all place names located in the province., O artigo se compõe estatisticamente através de mapas de todos os tipos, documentos sobre estado civil, registros familiares e documentos administrativos (coletivamente referidos como documentos vietnamitas). This paper shows the lessons learned after several courses on “Basic Vietnamese language and culture” targeting Japanese university students and adult learners, which have been conducted in 2020. Influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic, the materials and methods prepared for conventional classroom have been adapted and modified to suit the online platform. Although intended for beginners, these courses have applied and integrated approach for teaching a language and its corresponding culture in line with principles of adult learning, active learning, and problem-based learning. The lessons were designed using a wide range of techniques such as videos, pictures, anecdotes, crosswords, open-ended question, quizzes using multiple choice answers followed by analysis of each choice, online test. For each lesson, the learners were introduced to new vocabulary and basic expressions related to a socio-cultural theme such as history, national character, medical system, sightseeing, business etc. Looking from the perspective of both learners and teachers by evaluations and reflections, these courses have shown some positive experiences and suggested points for improvement of online language classroom in the future.

California is a major hub for the nail salon industry, with more than 100,000 licensed manicurists throughout the state. Most of the nail salons are small mom-and-pop businesses, and are primarily staffed by women and Vietnamese immigrants and refugees. Nail salons, in particular, were upended by COVID-19 and the shelter-in-place order of March 2020 that forced their closures for most of that year. Nail salons were allowed to reopen and then were forced to close again as cases surged, and finally reopened again in early 2021. This cycle of openings and closings took a tremendous emotional and financial strain on owners and workers alike. Although the industry is expected to bounce back, a new plethora of factors may affect the future of the industry. Drawing on a survey of 158 nail salon workers and 42 owners and interviews with 4 workers and 2 owners, this report provides insight into the economic and emotional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on nail salons in California. The results shed light on the financial fragility of workers and owners alike, and the significant—yet distinct—impact on their livelihoods

Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote that “to imagine a language means to imagine a form of life.” Here I suggest that the inverse is also true: to imagine a form of life involves imagining a language, or at least, a way of speaking. More specifically, I argue that those who imagine an alternative way life very often target the practices of interlocutor reference (reference to speaker and addressee of an utterance) for reform, apparently seeing such practices as in various ways constitutive of their social existence, including their relations with others. I discuss some of the ways in which thinking about language is constrained and shaped by the very character of language itself. I then turn to consider two cases in which advocates for social change sought to bring about a hoped-for future through reform of the practices of interlocutor reference.

This thesis examines the functions of the particle thì in Vietnamese. The previous literature mainly describes thì as a phrasal particle; the inter-clausal thì receives one previous description (Clark, 1992a), but the collected data in this thesis revealed that thì is predominantly used sentence-initially. Among 155 collected tokens of thì, 48 (31%) occurs phrasally, 38 (30%) occurs inter-clausally, and 69 (44%) occurs sentence-initially. The phrasal thì is analyzed as a topic and/or contrastive topic marker (Cao, 1991/2004; Clark, 1992a), or “a discourse template marker” (Tran, Forthcoming). The inter-clausal thì is considered “an inchoative conjunction” (Clark, 1992a). A description and an analysis of the sentence-initial thì remain unaddressed. Thus, this thesis furthers the literature on thì by providing a description of the particle and an analysis of its functions, with focus on the sentence-initial thì. The analysis shows that the sentential thì is best treated as a Discourse Marker (DM), in the spirit of Fraser (2009). With adaptations from Fraser’s framework, the category of DMs provides a unified analysis that can dissect the usages of both the inter-clausal and sentence-initial thì. More specifically, the sentential thì is a Contrastive Discourse Marker (CDM), Elaborative Discourse Marker (EDM), and Logical Discourse Marker (LDM) that signals various semantic relationships between surrounding propositions. The CDM thì indicates a contrastive relationship; the EDM thì is subcategorized into Sequential and Non-sequential EDM and conveys additional details; the LDM thì connects three types of logical relationships: Abductive, Inductive, and Deductive. The framework of DMs allows for a systematic understanding of the patterned usages of thì.

Teachers head up their students to the bright future, their role is indispensable, especially in the 21st century, which expects them to be energetic and flexible to apply knowledge to daily life and carrier tasks. Examining the perception on 21st-century skills teaching of pedagogy teacher-to-be undergraduates - plays a vital role in identifying deficits in teachers’ professional development; as well as organizing training programs to enhance their knowledge and skills. To the best of our knowledge, no study to date has examined pedagogy undergraduates’ perception in Vietnam. This study aimed at examining Vietnamese undergraduates' perception of teaching 21st-century skills. Our cross-sectional study used the 21st Century Skills Teaching Scale. Descriptive analysis and ANOVA were performed in this research. The results showed that: (1) Vietnamese pedagogy students had a high level of perception on teaching the 21st-century skills; (2) there was no gender difference in their perception; and (3) there was no significant difference in their perception regard to their school years and (4) there was a significant difference between those having joined soft skill courses at their university and those having not joined anyone.

Integration und Migration werden in Deutschland nie an Bedeutung verlieren. Ob als Gastarbeiter in den 1950er Jahren, Flüchtling in den 1970er Jahren oder Vertragsarbeiter in den 80ern, Deutschland hat über Jahre hinweg zahllose Migranten aufgenommen. Doch keine Migrantengruppe wird derzeit in den Medien positiver erwähnt als die der Vietnamesen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es aufzuzeigen, wie sich die Integration der Vietnamesen aus deutscher und vietnamesischer Sicht unterscheiden bzw. ähneln. Dazu wurden folgende Forschungsfragen gestellt: Sehen die deutschen Bürger die Vietnamesen tatsächlich als voll integriert? Und wie schätzen die Vietnamesen selbst ihre Integration ein? Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, sind vier qualitative Interviews mit zwei deutschen Staatsbürgern deutscher Herkunft, einer Vietnamesin, die in die damalige DDR als Vertragsarbeiterin kam, und einer Vietnamesin zweiter Generation, die in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen ist, durchgeführt worden. Die Interviews wurden auf Meinungen im Hinblick auf die vietnamesische Integration untersucht. Im Großen und Ganzen kann gesagt werden, dass trotz einiger Divergenzen hinsichtlich der geäußerten Sichtweisen, die Interviewten fast einstimmig der Meinung sind, Vietnamesen seien gut in die deutsche Gesellschaft eingegliedert - auch wenn das, was sie unter Integration verstehen, teilweise stark von den wissenschaftlichen Definitionen abweicht., The topic of migration and integration has not only become one of the most important but also one of the most divisive issues in Germany during recent years. However, migration and integration as such have always been important for Germany. Whether Turkish or Italian guest workers in the 1950s, Asian boat people in the 1970s or Vietnamese contract workers in the 1980s, West and East Germany have taken in numerous migrants over the years. As a matter of fact, no migrant group has been mentioned more positively in the media than the Vietnamese. The object of this paper is to show how the integration of the Vietnamese people differs or is similar from a German and Vietnamese perspective. The following research questions will be discussed: 1st) Do German people really see the Vietnamese as fully integrated? 2nd) How do the Vietnamese themselves assess their integration? In order to answer these questions, four qualitative interviews were conducted with two German participants, one Vietnamese woman who had come to the former GDR as a contract worker, and a second-generation Vietnamese woman born and raised in Germany. All participants were asked to express their individual opinions regarding Vietnamese integration. In general, it can be said that despite some differences in opinion, the interviewees were almost unanimously of the opinion that Vietnamese people are well integrated into German society, although this opinion cannot always be supported by scientific definitions.

This dissertation explores the grammaticalization of the morpheme được ‘acquire positively’ from a lexical verb to a passive and modality marker in Vietnamese through diachronic and synchronic corpora. This study uses three corpora including the Vietnamese Newspaper Corpus containing newspapers from 1916 to 2015, the Vietnamese Online Newspaper Corpus collecting recent online newspapers from 2013 to 2017, and the Vietnamese Spoken Corpus containing spoken language from talk shows, video blogs, and live streams on YouTube from 2010 to 2017. Based on the token frequency of được in the corpora and the grammaticalization framework of Hopper and Traugott (1993, 2003) I examine the emergence of passive and modality meanings of preverbal được and postverbal được and propose the development paths of these meanings. The results reveal that lexical được ‘acquire positively’ was grammaticalized into the preverbal marker được indicating passive, possibility, permission, and preferential meanings. The rise of passive được have taken place recently as evidenced by the recent outburst of token frequency. I argue that được maintains a sense of the positive judgement in passives, leading to the rise of preferential được. Lexical được ‘succeed’ gave rise to postverbal được marking ability and possibility. Postverbal possibility được is more common, suggesting that it has become entrenched recently. I show different approaches to the development of grammatical meanings of được. Different mechanisms, such as metaphor and analogy, metonymy and reanalysis, can contribute to the production of new meanings of được. Pragmatic inference and particularly metonymic inference with high token frequency also have a major impact on the grammaticalization of được, allowing an implicature to become a distinct meaning or drive a construction to emancipate from an old function and acquire a new one. This dissertation investigates inanimate classifiers in Vietnamese to identify classifier use patterns across genres, in spoken and written discourse as well as among different age groups. The study works on three corpora namely the Vietnamese Narrative Corpus consisting of 141 folktales, the Vietnamese Online Newspaper Corpus containing 140 contemporary online newspaper articles, and the Vietnamese Spoken Corpus including 22 talk show episodes with the total duration of 14 hours. As a discourse analysis study of frequency, distribution and function of attested inanimate classifiers, it attends closely to the use of cái (inanimate), double classifiers, and other frequent classifiers in the Vietnamese corpora. The study found that the classifier frequency in spoken Vietnamese is far higher than in written language. In Vietnamese, a classifier is required for classified nouns, but not for non-classified nouns. However, cái (inanimate) frequently appears with non-classified nouns functioning as emphatics in the spoken corpus, but not in the written corpora. I argue that this may lead to the higher classifier frequency in spoken Vietnamese than in written language. Interestingly, there is a decline in classifier frequency among younger speakers compared to older speakers. The data reveals that language change may be in progress in Vietnamese in apparent time. Double classifiers, in which cái (inanimate) is constructed with a classifier, are used often in spoken Vietnamese, but not in written language. I claim that in this construction cái (inanimate) functions as an emphatic, while the other classifier performs its own function. This research found that cái (inanimate) functions as cataphoric reference in Vietnamese. A number of classifiers combining with verbs and adjectival verbs function as nominalizers to indicate different semantic types. California is a major hub for the nail salon industry, with more than 100,000 licensed manicurists throughout the state. Most of the nail salons are small mom-and-pop businesses, and are primarily staffed by women and Vietnamese immigrants and refugees. Nail salons, in particular, were upended by COVID-19 and the shelter-in-place order of March 2020 that forced their closures for most of that year. Nail salons were allowed to reopen and then were forced to close again as cases surged, and finally reopened again in early 2021. This cycle of openings and closings took a tremendous emotional and financial strain on owners and workers alike. Although the industry is expected to bounce back, a new plethora of factors may affect the future of the industry. Drawing on a survey of 158 nail salon workers and 42 owners and interviews with 4 workers and 2 owners, this report provides insight into the economic and emotional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on nail salons in California. The results shed light on the financial fragility of workers and owners alike, and the significant—yet distinct—impact on their livelihoods

This thesis has two objectives. The first is to explore the robust predictors of later arithmetic abilities. A two-year longitudinal study was conducted on Vietnamese children aged 4 to 6 years. This study measures different numerical skills at preschool age, such as counting, enumeration, understanding of cardinality, ability to compare verbal numbers and collections, and approximate addition, to determine which ones predict addition skills at the end of first grade measured by a factor that covers both quantitative (accuracy, fluency) and qualitative (strategies) aspects. The second is to examine the effect of language, in particular, the degree of transparency to the base 10 of its verbal numerical system, on the child’s numerical development. Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote that “to imagine a language means to imagine a form of life.” Here I suggest that the inverse is also true: to imagine a form of life involves imagining a language, or at least, a way of speaking. More specifically, I argue that those who imagine an alternative way life very often target the practices of interlocutor reference (reference to speaker and addressee of an utterance) for reform, apparently seeing such practices as in various ways constitutive of their social existence, including their relations with others. I discuss some of the ways in which thinking about language is constrained and shaped by the very character of language itself. I then turn to consider two cases in which advocates for social change sought to bring about a hoped-for future through reform of the practices of interlocutor reference.

Vietnamese are the largest Asian ethnic group in Houston, Texas; however, research on this population is scarce. To address this dearth of knowledge, we developed the Vietnamese Aging and Care Survey. The objective of the study was to explore the sociodemographic and health characteristics of Vietnamese adults aged 65 years and older (n = 132) and their family caregivers (n = 64). Adult-child caregivers (n = 41) were aged between 21 and 65 years old. The majority were married, working, female, and in good to excellent health. Spousal caregivers (n = 23) were between 57 and 82 years old, retired, female, and in fair to good health. Adult children received more caregiving-related help from others compared to spousal caregivers; however, they felt more caregiver burden, had more perceived stress, and were in challenging relationships with care recipients. Differences in life stages of adult-child versus spousal caregivers may contribute to these results. Implications are discussed.

Since the first group of refugees who fled Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon in 1975 arrived in the United States, Vietnamese migrants have become significantly involved in the expansion of the ethnic business of professional nail care. As the numbers of new migrants from Vietnam who find employment in the nail industry continue to grow, this study seeks to understand the experiences of first-generation immigrant Vietnamese who went through a training program to become professional manicurists. This research draws on data collected from interviews with 22 manicurists-in-training and six months of ethnographic fieldwork at a major beauty college in Southern California. I argue that the manicurists-in-training understood their future work in the nail industry as a form of independent entrepreneurial labor rather than contracted labor, which allowed them to move freely within the ethnic business network of nail care around the United States for their entrepreneurial work as manicurists. As these manicurists-in-training went through the program, they carved out new forms of entrepreneurial selves, which were discussed in terms of liberation from exploitation and compliance with the law. These two understandings of the self work in tandem within the state’s neoliberal project, which seeks to produce subjects capable of self-government and self-realization (Rose, 1999, p.142). The training program was designed to produce compliant entrepreneurial subjects while also promising freedom in the form of autonomy (Rose, 1999). The program’s training practices were not about beauty but about “rendering moral” (Leshkowich, 2012), or producing good, disciplined and compliant entrepreneurial migrants. The training site showed tension between the state’s neoliberal entrepreneurial project, (which aimed to produce self-sufficient and liberated individuals who also comply with the law) and the Vietnamese migrants’ cultural sensibilities (which are linked to socialist-oriented collectiv

In tonal languages, the role of intonation in information-structuring has yet to be fully investigated. Intuitively, one would expect intonation to play only a small role in expressing communicative functions. However, experimental studies with Vietnamese native speakers show that intonation contours vary across different contexts and are used to mark certain types of information, for example, focus (Jannedy, 2007). In non-tonal languages (e.g., English), the marking of focus by intonation can influence the processing of focus alternatives (Fraundorf, Watson, & Benjamin, 2010). If Vietnamese also uses intonation to mark focus, the question arises whether the behavioral consequences of prosodic focus marking in Vietnamese are comparable to languages such as English or German. To test this, we replicate a study on memory for focus alternatives, originally carried out in German (Koch & Spalek, in progress), with Vietnamese language stimuli. In the original study, memory for focus alternatives was improved in a delayed recall task for focused elements produced with contrastive intonation in female speakers. Here, we replicate this finding with Northern Vietnamese native speakers: Contrastive intonation seems to improve later recall for focus alternatives in Northern Vietnamese, but only for female participants, in line with the findings by Koch and Spalek (in progress). This thesis aims to empirically test the efficiency level of 14 insurance companies as a sample size throughout the Vietnam insurance market in 205-2018 by using the nonparametric approach of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as mentioned above. Additionally, Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) is used to measure the source of a total change of productivity factor to make the research become more comprehensive. The result of DEA model and MPI will be compared to the financial insurance benchmark used in Vietnam, and it is expected to become useful input/output for IRDBs and regulators in transforming and developing the business of Vietnam insurance market. Specifically, this thesis concludes 3 main parts, first, it will begin with the background or overview of Vietnam insurance market, some basic definition about the Life and Non-life insurance firm, and the usual indicators benchmark used by Vietnam insurers particularly to evaluate and rank the insurance firm and its result. This part is covered through chapter 2 of this study. Second, it moves on the definition, assumptions, and some formula, analysis about the DEA-CRS, DEA-CRS, and Malmquist total factor productivity which are the main idea of this thesis to use the comprehensive method to assess the efficiency of Vietnam insurance firm, which is the content of chapter 3 of this paper. Third, the thesis will end with the application of DEA model and Malmquist productivity index in Vietnam insurance industry, the result of this analysis and the comparison with some assumptions might be made through these results, which is what chapter 4 and chapter 5 of this paper covers.

For Southeast Asian young people who left as adolescents from their home countries, their connections to those places are often fraught with ambiguity. As for almost all first-generation immigrant youth, issues of belonging in America have touched multiple aspects of their lives, including issues of identity. Not belonging is the diasporic experience of the immigrant (Christou, 2011; Skrbis, 2008). This qualitative study examined the lived experience of three Vietnamese American young people returning home as Việt Kiều, or diasporic Vietnamese. For these emerging adults, it was an important developmental task to figure out one’s place in the world: one’s belief systems, group allegiances, and future life directions (Arnett, 2015). Returning to Vietnam on their own, reconnecting to relatives, and revisiting neighborhoods, homes, and villages where they grew up was indeed an important part of this task. Where was home and where did they, in fact, belong? Significantly, their recounting of their homecomings engendered epiphanies about their own emotional landscapes and social locations, both in the United States and in Vietnam. Exploring the interrelated emotional and physical journeys of young people has the potential of shedding light on issues of self-care and socio-emotional well-being in immigrant families and communities.

Several cross-sectional studies have suggested that the transparency of the number-naming system of East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese) facilitates children's numerical development. The Vietnamese number-naming system also makes the base-10 system very explicit (eleven is "mười một," literally "ten-one," and thirty is "ba mươi," literally "three-ten"). In contrast, Western languages (English, French) include teen words (eleven to sixteen) and ten words (twenty to ninety) that make their counting systems less transparent. The main question addressed in this paper is: To what extent does a language's number-naming system impact preschoolers' numerical development? Our study participants comprised 104 Vietnamese and 104 French-speaking Belgian children between 3½ and 5½ years of age, as well as their parents. We tested the children on eight numerical tasks (counting, advanced counting, enumeration, Give-N, number-word comparison, collection comparison, addition, and approximate addition) and some general cognitive abilities (IQ and phonological loop by letter span). The parents completed a questionnaire on the frequency with which they stimulated their child's numeracy and literacy at home. The results indicated that Vietnamese children outperformed Belgian children only in counting. However, neither group differed in other symbolic or non-symbolic abilities, although Vietnamese parents tended to stimulate their child at home slightly more than Belgian parents. We concluded that the Vietnamese number-naming system's transparency led to faster acquisition of basic counting for preschoolers but did not support other more advanced numerical skills or non-symbolic numerical abilities. In addition, we extended the evidence that both transparent number-naming system and home numeracy influence young children's counting development.

This thesis aims to empirically test the efficiency level of 14 insurance companies as a sample size throughout the Vietnam insurance market in 205-2018 by using the nonparametric approach of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as mentioned above. Additionally, Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) is used to measure the source of a total change of productivity factor to make the research become more comprehensive. The result of DEA model and MPI will be compared to the financial insurance benchmark used in Vietnam, and it is expected to become useful input/output for IRDBs and regulators in transforming and developing the business of Vietnam insurance market. Specifically, this thesis concludes 3 main parts, first, it will begin with the background or overview of Vietnam insurance market, some basic definition about the Life and Non-life insurance firm, and the usual indicators benchmark used by Vietnam insurers particularly to evaluate and rank the insurance firm and its result. This part is covered through chapter 2 of this study. Second, it moves on the definition, assumptions, and some formula, analysis about the DEA-CRS, DEA-CRS, and Malmquist total factor productivity which are the main idea of this thesis to use the comprehensive method to assess the efficiency of Vietnam insurance firm, which is the content of chapter 3 of this paper. Third, the thesis will end with the application of DEA model and Malmquist productivity index in Vietnam insurance industry, the result of this analysis and the comparison with some assumptions might be made through these results, which is what chapter 4 and chapter 5 of this paper covers.

In this paper, an effective question detection algorithm for Vietnamese text analysis is proposed. The proposed algorithm takes an audio file as input, converts its speech to text, and returns question detection result. This is extremely useful for a text analyzer to determine if a given sentence generated from an audio file is a question or not, particularly in chatbot or voicebot systems where very often there are needs for automatic replies to questions queried by users. The algorithm uses two tiers of question words and a customized question phrases to achieve 88.64 % accuracy on a sub-dataset of 176 questions prepared based on FPT Open Speech Dataset. © 2020 ACM.

Background: Vietnamese Americans (VnA) are at high risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). VnA are initially diagnosed at an earlier mean age and have higher T2DM prevalence compared to Non-Hispanic Whites, despite having lower mean body mass index. VnA may not perceive their risk of T2DM, which may affect their risk-reducing behaviors. There is a paucity of literature regarding the risk perception of developing T2DM in general and even more so for VnA, supporting the need for this study. Purpose: A fixed complementarity (QUAL+quant) mixed method design with a data transformation variant was used to comprehensively describe the perceived risk of developing T2DM among VnA adults with prediabetes. Methods: A non-random, multiple purposive sampling scheme was used to obtain a sample size of 10 VnA adults with prediabetes in the southwestern United States. Data collection techniques included individual, semi-structured interviews and quantitative questionnaires. Qualitative descriptive, quantitative descriptive, and data transformation techniques were used for data analyses. Findings: The two risk perception domains emerging from the qualitative data were risk factors and disease severity. The main risk factors of T2DM noted by participants were eating habits (including the cultural influences on eating habits), sedentary lifestyle, and family history of T2DM. The mean composite Risk Perception Survey for Developing Diabetes score was 2.15 (SD=0.31) with mean scores of 3.30 and 3.10, respectively for the personal control and worry subscales. The meta-inference concluded that most VnA in this sample have a low perceived T2DM risk with divergence noted only with one participant. Conclusions: VnA with prediabetes perceive they are at low risk for T2DM. Strategies to promote accurate risk perception for T2DM risk that is more congruent to actual risk may be needed to supplement T2DM prevention efforts. My project focuses on the Viet Rainbow of Orange County (VROC), a community-based and volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by an intergenerational group of LGBTQ and allied Vietnamese Americans. Through an ethnographic approach (semi-structured interviews and participant-observation), I explore how VROC members reconfigure and reimagine the concept of a Vietnamese family as the basis for their community organizing efforts to create an equitable Vietnamese diaspora. How might we view this familial mode of organizing as a potential protective health factor for these traditionally abject bodies? My work aims to examine how VROC as an organization fosters a culture of health through members’ queering of family and kinship. Furthermore, I look at how participation in VROC impacts LGBTQ and allied Vietnamese Americans’ sức khỏe (translated as health).

This paper aims at finding the differences between Germany and Vietnam concerning CSR reporting conducted by two major corporations from each country. The reports will be analyzed based on two dimensions including companies’ disclosed information and the impacts made by these information.
