We introduce the notion of branon jets, states of collinear flux tube excitations. We argue for the analyticity, crossing and unitarity of the multi-particle scattering of these jets and, through the S-matrix bootstrap, place bounds on a set of finite energy multi-particle sum rules. Such bounds define a matrioska of sorts with a smaller and smaller allowed regions as we impose more constraints. The Yang-Mills flux tube, as well as other interesting flux tube theories recently studied through lattice simulations, lie inside a tiny island hundreds of times smaller than the most general space of allowed two-dimensional theories., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

Using integrability, we construct (to leading order in perturbation theory) the explicit form of twist-three light-ray operators in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. This construction allows us to directly compute analytically continued CFT data at complex spin. We derive analytically the "magic'' decoupling zeroes previously observed numerically. Using the Baxter equation, we also show that certain Regge trajectories merge together into a single unifying Riemann surface. Perhaps more surprisingly, we find that this unification of Regge trajectories is not unique. If we organize twist-three operators differently into what we call "cousin trajectories'' we find infinitely more possible continuations. We speculate about which of these remarkable features of twist-three operators might generalize to other operators, other regimes and other theories., Comment: 52 pages, 15 figures

In the bulk dual of holography, huge operators correspond to sources so heavy that they fully backreact on the space-time geometry. Here we study the correlation function of three such huge operators when they are given by $1/2$ BPS operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, dual to IIB Strings in $AdS_5 \times S^5$. We unveil simple matrix model representations for these correlators which we can sometimes solve analytically. For general huge operators, we translate these matrix model expressions into a $1+1$ dimensional hydrodynamical fluid problem. This fluid is integrable thus unveiling a novel integrable sector of the $AdS/CFT$ duality in a full fledged gravitational regime, very far from the usual free string planar regime where integrability reigns supreme. We explain how an adiabatic deformation method can be developed to yield the solution to an integrable discrete formulation of these fluids -- the rational Calogero-Moser Model -- so we can access the general three point correlation functions of generic huge $1/2$-BPS operators. Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic etiology, characterized by paternal deletion of genes located at chromosome 15 in 70% of cases. Two distinct genetic subtypes of PWS deletions are characterized, where type I (PWS T1) carries four extra haploinsufficient genes compared to type II (PWS T2). PWS T1 individuals display more pronounced physiological and cognitive abnormalities than PWS T2, yet the exact neuropathological mechanisms behind these differences remain unclear. Our study employed postmortem hypothalamic tissues from PWS T1 and T2 individuals, conducting transcriptomic analyses and cell-specific protein profiling in white matter, neurons, and glial cells to unravel the cellular and molecular basis of phenotypic severity in PWS sub-genotypes. In PWS T1, key pathways for cell structure, integrity, and neuronal communication are notably diminished, while glymphatic system activity is heightened compared to PWS T2. The microglial defect in PWS T1 appears to stem from gene haploinsufficiency, as global and myeloid-specific Cyfip1 haploinsufficiency in murine models demonstrated. Our findings emphasize microglial phagolysosome dysfunction and altered neural communication as crucial contributors to the severity of PWS T1's phenotype.

We present S+t-SNE, an adaptation of the t-SNE algorithm designed to handle infinite data streams. The core idea behind S+t-SNE is to update the t-SNE embedding incrementally as new data arrives, ensuring scalability and adaptability to handle streaming scenarios. By selecting the most important points at each step, the algorithm ensures scalability while keeping informative visualisations. Employing a blind method for drift management adjusts the embedding space, facilitating continuous visualisation of evolving data dynamics. Our experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of S+t-SNE. The results highlight its ability to capture patterns in a streaming scenario. Bulk density for shrubs and tree crowns is an important variable, useful for many purposes, namely estimations for biomass and carbon sequestration and potential fire behavior prediction. In the latter case, bulk density is required to predict the rate of spread and intensity of crown fires. However, bulk density information is scarce. The estimation of bulk density is crucial to help choosing proper pyrosilviculture options to decrease fire susceptibility. Due to the similar environmental conditions and fuel characteristics in Portugal and Spain, we modelled bulk density for the most common woody species in all the Iberian Peninsula. We used 10 different shrub type formations and a set of tree species or groups common to both countries. Equations for bulk density, in both forest canopy and understory layers, were fitted as a function of biometric variables commonly used in forest inventories for the selected species. Standardized estimates of bulk density can be associated with data from the National Forest Inventories from Portugal and Spain, to estimate biomass of the forest ecosystems and to evaluate potential fire behavior involving tree canopies and shrubs.

We initiate the study of holographic correlators for operators whose dimension scales with the central charge of the CFT. Differently from light correlators or probes, the insertion of any such maximally heavy operator changes the AdS metric, so that the correlator itself is dual to a backreacted geometry with marked points at the Poincar\'e boundary. We illustrate this new physics for two-point functions. Whereas the bulk description of light or probe operators involves Witten diagrams or extremal surfaces in an AdS background, the maximally heavy two-point functions are described by nontrivial new geometries which we refer to as "spacetime bananas". As a universal example, we discuss the two-point function of maximally heavy scalar operators described by the Schwarzschild black hole in the bulk and we show that its onshell action reproduces the expected CFT result. This computation is nonstandard, and adding boundary terms to the action on the stretched horizon is crucial. Then, we verify the conformal Ward Identity from the holographic stress tensor and discuss important aspects of the Fefferman-Graham patch. Finally we study a Heavy-Heavy-Light-Light correlator by using geodesics propagating in the banana background. Our main motivation here is to set up the formalism to explore possible universal results for three- and higher-point functions of maximally heavy operators., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

We study $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at non-integer number of colours. By varying $N$ we can continuously follow states all the way from $N=\infty$ where integrability reigns to finite $N$ where quantum gravity effects dominate. As an application we consider classically $1/16$ BPS states. Quantum mechanically, these states are generically non-supersymmetric but some special states - at special values of $N$ - become super-symmetric at the quantum level as well. They are the so-called quantum black hole states studied recently using cohomology. We write down the form of the lightest BH state at $N=2$ - and follow it in $N$, both at weak coupling and - more speculatively - at strong coupling as well. At weak coupling this state has protected dimension $\Delta=19/2$ at $N=2$ and becomes a triple trace made out of Konishi and two light BPS operators at infinite $N$ with $\Delta=19/2+12\lambda+\dots$. We describe solutions of asymptotically AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity that are sourced by the insertion of operators in the boundary CFT$_2$, whose dimension scales with the central charge of the theory. Previously, we found that the geometry corresponding to a black hole two-point function is simply related to an infinite covering of the Euclidean BTZ black hole. However, here we find that the geometry sourced by the presence of a third black hole operator turns out to be a Euclidean wormhole with two asymptotic boundaries. We construct this new geometry as a quotient of empty AdS$_3$ realized by domes and doors. The doors give access to the infinite covers that are needed to describe the insertion of the operators, while the domes describe the fundamental domains of the quotient on each cover. In particular, despite the standard fact that the Fefferman-Graham expansion is single-sided, the extended bulk geometry contains a wormhole that connects two asymptotic boundaries. We observe that the two-sided wormhole can be made single-sided by cutting off the wormhole and gluing on a "Lorentzian cap". In this way, the geometry gives the holographic description of a three-point function, up to phases. By rewriting the metric in terms of a Liouville field, we compute the on-shell action and find that the result matches with the Heavy-Heavy-Heavy three-point function predicted by the modular bootstrap. Finally, we describe the geometric transition between doors and defects, that is, when one or more dual operators describe a conical defect insertion, rather than a black hole insertion., Comment: 45 pages, 21 figures

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the agent of a major global outbreak of respiratory tract disease known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 infects mainly lungs and may cause several immune-related complications, such as lymphocytopenia and cytokine storm, which are associated with the severity of the disease and predict mortality. The mechanism by which SARS-CoV-2 infection may result in immune system dysfunction is still not fully understood. Here, we show that SARS-CoV-2 infects human CD4+ T helper cells, but not CD8+ T cells, and is present in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage T helper cells of severe COVID-19 patients. We demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein (S) directly binds to the CD4 molecule, which in turn mediates the entry of SARS-CoV-2 in T helper cells. This leads to impaired CD4 T cell function and may cause cell death. SARS-CoV-2-infected T helper cells express higher levels of IL-10, which is associated with viral persistence and disease severity. Thus, CD4-mediated SARS-CoV-2 infection of T helper cells may contribute to a poor immune response in COVID-19 patients.

The main objective of this paper is to present an explanation for the divergent development trajectories of two regions of the capitalist world-economy, Latin America and East Asia. Methodology: starting from the concepts of world-economy, world region, regional focus and long durée, it is intended to verify how the forms of integration of the two regions to the capitalist world-economy affected them in three essential dimensions for economic development: State, capital accumulation and technological capability, from the 16th century to the present. Conclusions: having autonomously developed the three dimensions analyzed to the point of equating to the West at least until the end of the 17th century, when it was incorporated into the capitalist world-economy in the first half of the 19th century, East Asia was able to take advantage of this integration and advance in global hierarchies of wealth and power. On the other hand, Latin America, which as a geopolitical entity was born together with the capitalist world-economy in the 16th century, was at that moment at a relatively low level of development in these dimensions, which, together with colonialism, continued to restrict its development and maintaining the region in its historical position as a periphery of the capitalist world-economy. Originality: the originality of this research is to establish a historically grounded principle of variation to explain the divergence in recent development trajectories of Latin America and East Asia., o objetivo principal deste artigo é explicar as trajetórias divergentes de desenvolvimento de duas regiões da economia-mundo capitalista, a América Latina e o Leste Asiático. Metodologia: partindo dos conceitos de economia-mundo, região-mundo, enfoque regional e longe durée (longa duração), pretende-se verificar como as formas de integração das duas regiões à economia-mundo capitalista as afetou em três dimensões essenciais para o desenvolvimento econômico: Estado, acumulação de capital e capacidade tecnológica, desde o século XVI até o presente. Conclusões: por ter desenvolvido autonomamente as três dimensões analisadas ao ponto de se igualar ao Ocidente pelo menos até o final do século XVII, ao ser incorporado à economia-mundo capitalista na primeira metade do século XIX, o Leste Asiático foi capaz de tirar proveito dessa integração e avançar nas hierarquias mundiais de riqueza e poder. Conformal Regge theory predicts the existence of analytically continued CFT data for complex spin. How could this work when there are so many more operators with large spin compared to small spin? Using planar N=4 SYM as a testground we find a simple physical picture. Operators do organize themselves into analytic families but the continuation of the higher families have zeroes in their structure OPE constants for lower integer spins. They thus decouple. Newton's interpolation series technique is perfectly suited to this physical problem and will allow us to explore the right complex spin half-plane., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We use the S-matrix bootstrap to carve out the space of unitary, analytic, crossing symmetric and supersymmetric graviton scattering amplitudes in nine, ten and eleven dimensions. We extend and improve the numerical methods of our previous work in ten dimensions. A key new tool employed here is unitarity in the celestial sphere. In all dimensions, we find that the minimal allowed value of the Wilson coefficient $\alpha$, controlling the leading correction to maximal supergravity, is very close but not equal to the minimal value realized in Superstring theory or M-theory. This small difference may be related to inelastic effects that are not well described by our numerical extremal amplitudes. Although $\alpha$ has a unique value in M-theory, we found no evidence of an upper bound on $\alpha$ in 11D., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures

We propose a new framework for computing three-point functions in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills where these correlators take the form of multiple integrals of Separation of Variables type. We test this formalism at weak coupling at leading and next-to-leading orders in a non-compact SL(2) sector of the theory and all the way to next-to-next-to-leading orders for a compact SU(2) sector. We reduce the computation of three point function of three spinning operators with arbitrary polarizations to a statistical mechanics problem via the hexagon formalism. The central building block of these correlation functions is the hexagon partition function. We explore its analytic structure and use it to generate perturbative data for spinning three point functions. For certain polarizations and any coupling, we express the full asymptotic three point function in determinant form. With the integrability approach established we open the ground to study the large spin limit where dualities with null Wilson loops and integrable pentagons must appear., Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures

We consider correlation functions of single trace operators approaching the cusps of null polygons in a double-scaling limit where so-called $\textit{cusp times}$ $t_i^2 = g^2 \log x_{i-1,i}^2\log x_{i,i+1}^2$ are held fixed and the t'Hooft coupling is small. With the help of stampedes, symbols and educated guesses, we find that any such correlator can be uniquely fixed through a set of coupled lattice PDEs of Toda type with several intriguing novel features. These results hold for most conformal gauge theories with a large number of colours, including planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

In this work we introduce a notion of $\mathit{stampede}$ which is a simple time-evolution of a bunch of particles which start their life in a corner - on the very right say - and $\mathit{hop}$ their way to the opposite corner - on the left - through the repeated action of a quantum Hamiltonian. Such stampedes govern leading logs quantities in certain quantum field theories. The leading euclidean OPE limit of correlation functions in the fishnet theory and null double-scaling limits of correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM are notable examples. We use the numerical S-matrix bootstrap method to obtain bounds on the two leading Wilson coefficients of the chiral lagrangian controlling the low-energy dynamics of massless pions thus providing a proof of concept that the numerical S-matrix bootstrap can be used to derive non-perturbative bounds on EFTs in more than two spacetime dimensions., Comment: 12 pages + appendices

We initiate an exploration of the conformal bootstrap for $n>4$ point correlation functions. Here we bootstrap correlation functions of the lightest scalar gauge invariant operators in planar non-abelian conformal gauge theories as their locations approach the cusps of a null polygon. For that we consider consistency of the OPE in the so-called snowflake channel with respect to cyclicity transformations which leave the null configuration invariant. For general non-abelian gauge theories this allows us to strongly constrain the OPE structure constants of up to three large spin $J_j$ operators (and large polarization quantum number $l_{j}$) to all loop orders. In $ \mathcal{N}=4$ we fix them completely through the duality to null polygonal Wilson loops and the recent origin limit of the hexagon explored by Basso, Dixon and Papathanasiou., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table and 2 mathematica notebooks. We explore a new way of probing scattering of closed strings in $AdS_5\times S^5$, which we call `the large $p$ limit'. It consists of studying four-point correlators of single-particle operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$, by looking at the regime in which the dual KK modes become short massive strings. In this regime the charge of the single-particle operators is order $\lambda^{1/4}$ and the dual KK modes are in between fields and strings. Starting from SUGRA we compute the large $p$ limit of the correlators by introducing an improved $AdS_5\times S^5$ Mellin space amplitude, and we show that the correlator is dominated by a saddle point. Our results are consistent with the picture of four geodesics shooting from the boundary of $AdS_5\times S^5$ towards a common bulk point, where they scatter as if they were in flat space. The Mandelstam invariants are put in correspondence with the Mellin variables and in turn with certain combinations of cross ratios. At the saddle point the dynamics of the correlator is directly related to the bulk Mellin amplitude, which in the process of taking large $p$ becomes the flat space ten-dimensional S-matrix. We thus learn how to embed the full type IIB S-matrix in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ Mellin amplitude, and how to stratify the latter in a large $p$ expansion. We compute the large $p$ limit of all genus zero data currently available, pointing out additional hidden simplicity of known results. Using duality in optimization theory we formulate a dual approach to the S-matrix bootstrap that provides rigorous bounds to 2D QFT observables as a consequence of unitarity, crossing symmetry and analyticity of the scattering matrix. We then explain how to optimize such bounds numerically, and prove that they provide the same bounds obtained from the usual primal formulation of the S-matrix Bootstrap, at least once convergence is attained from both perspectives. In the field of Translation Studies, paratexts included in translated books have been increasingly used by researchers as part of their descriptive-based studies, which has originated a wealth of theory about the functions that paratexts play in translated materials. We consider the 2D S-matrix bootstrap in the presence of supersymmetry, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. We consider the scattering matrices of massive quantum field theories with no bound states and a global $O(N)$ symmetry in two spacetime dimensions. In particular we explore the space of two-to-two S-matrices of particles of mass $m$ transforming in the vector representation as restricted by the general conditions of unitarity, crossing, analyticity and $O(N)$ symmetry. We found a rich structure in that space by using convex maximization and in particular its convex dual minimization problem. At the boundary of the allowed space special geometric points such as vertices were found to correspond to integrable models. We explore the space of consistent three-particle couplings in $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric two-dimensional QFTs using two first-principles approaches. Our first approach relies solely on unitarity, analyticity and crossing symmetry of the two-to-two scattering amplitudes and extends the techniques of [arXiv:1607.06110] to a multi-amplitude setup. Our second approach is based on placing QFTs in AdS to get upper bounds on couplings with the numerical conformal bootstrap, and is a multi-correlator version of [arXiv:1607.06109]. The space of allowed couplings that we carve out is rich in features, some of which we can link to amplitudes in integrable theories with a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, e.g., the three-state Potts and tricritical Ising field theories. The full correlator in the limit is given by a non-trivial function of two variables: One variable is the charge of the BPS operators divided by the square root of the number Nc of colors; the other variable is the octagon that contains all the 't Hooft coupling and spacetime dependence. At each genus g in the large Nc expansion, this function is a polynomial of degree 2g+2 in the octagon. We find several dual matrix model representations of the correlators in the large-charge limit. We find that the low energy expansion of such S-matrices is strongly constrained by the existence of a UV completion. In the context of flux tube physics, this allows us to constrain several terms in the S-matrix low energy expansion or -- equivalently -- on Wilson coefficients of several irrelevant operators showing up in the flux tube effective action. These bounds have direct implications for other physical quantities; for instance, they allow us to further bound the ground state energy as well as the level splitting of degenerate energy levels of large flux tubes. We find that the S-matrices living at the boundary of the allowed space exhibit an intricate pattern of resonances with one sharper resonance whose quantum numbers, mass and width are precisely those of the world-sheet axion proposed in [1,2]. The north‐east Atlantic (NEA) is an important and complex biogeographic region with a very rich marine fauna. However, little is known about the role of the Macaronesian islands in the evolutionary history and diversification of marine invertebrates in the NEA. Among the amphipods, the members of the family Hyalidae are particularly common and abundant in intertidal rocky shores of NEA. In this study, we aimed to investigate the genetic structure and diversity of seven hyalid species inhabiting the Macaronesian, European and Moroccan Atlantic coasts, with a focus on the genetic differentiation between island and Continental populations. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I gene, unravelled a very high level of hidden diversity, consisting of 26–32 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs), the majority of them recorded in Macaronesian populations. Except for Apohyale stebbingi, all remaining MOTUs were in general allopatrically distributed, with a trend for segregation between islands and Continental populations on one side, but also for the occurrence of private MOTUs among islands. Results indicate distinct evolutionary and diversification patterns among Hyalidae species, but a strong separation between Continental and islands’ lineages appears to be a common feature to all of them. Apparently, the complex geomorphological history of the Macaronesian archipelagos served as an important promoter of extensive diversification of marine invertebrates in NEA, a phenomenon which only now starts to be fully appreciated through the use of molecular data.

Diversification and speciation of terrestrial organisms are anticipated in oceanic islands such as Macaronesia, a group of Atlantic islands that have remained unconnected to continental landmasses. Hitherto, the diversification of marine organisms in oceanic islands, especially those with low vagility, has received little direct empirical analysis using molecular markers. Here, we focus on such a case study, through applying a multilocus molecular approach to investigate the diversity and evolution of a group that lacks a planktonic larval stage, the isopod genus Dynamene, in Macaronesia and Northeast Atlantic. Sequences of two mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA) and two nuclear (18S rRNA and 28S rRNA) loci were obtained from specimens of Dynamene edwardsi (Lucas, 1849), Dynamene magnitorata Holdich, 1968 and Dynamene bidentata (Adams, 1800) collected along the Northeast Atlantic and Macaronesia. Although no major phylogeographic structure was detected in D. bidentata and D. magnitorata, from five to nine deeply divergent lineages were evident within D. edwardsi. The divergent lineages displayed genetic distances comparable to those found among established species of peracarids. D. edwardsi exhibits a long, rich and complex phylogeographic history in Macaronesia, where the geodynamics of the islands possibly associated with founder effects and subsequent lack of gene flow among populations confounds patterns based on geographic proximity of targeted populations. Our findings collectively suggest a much larger role of oceanic islands in the diversification of marine invertebrates than previously anticipated. The work provides insights into the origins and dynamics of ongoing geographic segregation and associated deep divergence among sister evolutionary lineages in Macaronesia.

Matlab and Python have been widely used in science field, mainly used by scientists who are involved in numerical and technical computing. However, other programming languages have arisen in recent years aim to create a combination of power, and efficiency for free. In light of this, this work presents a comparison between three computational environments (MATLAB, Python and Julia) - on the study of grounding grids for lightning transients - to evaluate the best programming language (among all studied). The main parameter presented on this paper is computational time. The results showed Julia programming language provided simulations six times faster than Matlab and twenty-eight faster than Python.
