New age estimates obtained via Strontium Isotope (87Sr/86Sr) Stratigraphy and new paleoclimatic data are here presented for the Miocene Chilcatay and Pisco formations exposed in the East Pisco Basin, an Andean forearc basin of southern Peru, which is renowned worldwide for its exceptional content of fossil marine vertebrates. Mollusk and barnacle shells, carbonate nodules, and shark teeth were collected along three stratigraphic sections for applying Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy on both carbonates and phosphates. To avoid diagenetic biases, mollusk and barnacle shells were analyzed in detail by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, whereas only the enameloid from the best-preserved shark teeth was sampled. The obtained 87Sr/86Sr ages confirm a late early Miocene (Burdigalian) age for the Chilcatay strata, and reveal middle Miocene (Langhian to Serravallian) ages for the lower Pisco unit (i.e., the P0 sequence) – a result that matches the relatively archaic aspect of its cetacean fossil assemblage. New and literature data about the fossil assemblage of the lower Pisco beds highlight the presence of several thermophilic invertebrates and vertebrates, thus suggesting a warm-water, tropical paleoenvironment for this middle Miocene sequence. Such a paleoenvironmental scenario recalls the warm conditions associated with the Chilcatay Formation, rather than the cooler setting inferred for the remainder of the Pisco Formation (i.e., the P1 and P2 sequences). This pattern likely reflects the late Miocene trend of global cooling, as well as a middle to early late Miocene strengthening of the Humboldt Current.

In this work, we present preliminary results of the first application in the Mediterranean Sea of a hyperspectral camera, a device commonly used for satellite or airborne remote sensing, adapted for the underwater environment. The spectral analysis was carried out on hyperspectral images acquired in two different environmental settings in the southern Adriatic Sea. This new technology shows high potentialities of application for benthic habitat mapping and monitoring.

Benthic foraminifera (protists with biomineralized tests) coupled with geochemical proxies are used for the first time to characterize present oceanographic conditions occurring in cold-water coral ecosystems (CWC) in the eastern Alboran Sea (Brittlestar Ridge and Cablier Mound), western Mediterranean Sea. Quantitative data on living (stained) benthic foraminifera from 5 box cores retrieved during the MD194 cruise on the RV Marion Dufresne reveal that these organisms are more diverse in presence of corals, where more numerous ecological niches occur than they are in pelagic adjacent sediments. These data confirm that CWC can be considered as “diversity hotspots” also for benthic foraminifera. Geochemical characterization shows that these sediments contain relatively fresh (labile) organic matter but also a reworked refractory component. In particular, the total organic carbon and the δ13Corg values suggest that some of the organic matter may be a mixture of marine and reworked particulate organic matter, compared to typical values from temperate phytoplankton. The δ15N of the organic fraction suggests that important atmospheric N2-fixation and degradation processes occur in the region. Finally, our results show that a more effective advection of freshly exported particulate organic matter from the surface waters occur at the mound top rather than at the mound base or off-mound allowing some coral colonies to survive on the top of mounds in this region. The mud layer covering the coral rubble debris may suggest that the Brittlestar Ridge is today exposed to siltation preventing the growth of corals at the mound base or off-mound.

This dissertation studied the adoption of agricultural technologies and the value of information for the allocation of resources in agriculture. Chapter 1 studied traditional (e.g., land and labor) and commercial (e.g., machinery and fertilizers) inputs in South American agriculture. Acemoglu’s directed technical change was used to estimate the process of induced innovation using deforestation as source of exogenous variation for the agricultural land supply. The results indicated that larger availability of land in intensive deforestation countries caused more land-complementary inputs (machinery) to be used relative to labor-complementary inputs (fertilizers). Technical change was biased towards land. Chapter 2 studied nitrogen fertilizer application in U.S. agriculture. Soil information (signal) allowed the adoption of variable rate technology (VRT) applications of nitrogen across the plots (cells) of the fields. I provided a Bayesian structural model, based on the Expected Value of Sample Information (EVSI), with an application using data from the Data-Intensive Farm Management (DIFM) project to evaluate the expected returns of VRT. Soil electroconductivity (EC) and VRT provided low expected returns which can be explained by EC being “poorly” correlated with the true soil conditions and/or the quality of the soil might be uniform across the fields, hence, not supporting the VRT adoption. Chapter 3 used remote sensing information to estimate the effects of droughts on agriculture for Brazilian municipalities. First, the effect of droughts for all the corn- and soybeans-producing Brazilian municipalities was estimated, then a model adding remote sensing data was estimated for the municipalities from a soybeans-producing region of Southern Brazil, both for the 2002-2016 period. The extensive fauna of fossil cirripedes from Sicily originally described by Giuseppe Seguenza (1873, 1876) is reviewed, both by synoptic revision of the original material, destroyed in 1908, and from recently collected specimens. A total fauna of 41 taxa is identified from the upper Piacenzian to Calabrian of Sicily and many are revised taxonomically. The fauna includes three calanticids, two lepadids, five scalpellids, six verrucids and 25 balanomorphs. Two species are new, Solidobalanus digeronimoi Gale sp. nov. and Gibbosaverruca milazzensis Gale sp. nov. Scillaelepas carinata (Philippi, 1835) is shown to be the senior synonym of species of Scillaelepas Seguenza, 1876 recorded from the present-day Atlantic, and Aurivillialepas ornata (Seguenza, 1876) is a senior synonym of the extant A. calycula (Aurivillius, 1898). The names Rostratoverruca romettensis (Seguenza, 1873), Metaverruca zanclea (Seguenza, 1873) and M. dilatata (Seguenza, 1873) are demonstrated to be senior synonyms of living species generally referred to as Metaverruca imbricata (Gruvel, 1900), M. recta (Aurivillius, 1898) and M. radiata (Gruvel, 1901), respectively. The fossil Sicilian fauna largely represents benthic taxa which lived in the upper bathyal zone, with some taxa transported from shallower environments and minor epipelagic elements. The Cainozoic fossil cirripede fauna known from the Mediterranean Basin is reviewed, and the effects on the fauna of closure of the eastern Mediterranean, the Messinian Salinity Crisis, and middle Pleistocene events are evaluated. A major extinction around the end of the Calabrian (early Pleistocene) resulted in the loss of 50 per cent of the Mediterranean cirripede fauna.

Cold-water corals (CWC), dominantly Desmophyllum pertusum (previously Lophelia pertusa), and their mounds have been in the focus of marine research during the last two decades; however, little is known about the mound-forming capacity of other CWC species. Here, we present new 230Th/U age constraints of the relatively rarely studied framework-building CWC Solenosmilia variabilis from a mound structure off the Brazilian margin combined with computed tomography (CT) acquisition. Our results show that S. variabilis can also contribute to mound formation, but reveal coral-free intervals of hemipelagic sediment deposits, which is in contrast to most of the previously studied CWC mound structures. We demonstrate that S. variabilis only occurs in short episodes of < 4 kyr characterized by a coral content of up to 31 vol%. In particular, it is possible to identify distinct clusters of enhanced aggradation rates (AR) between 54 and 80 cm ka−1. The determined AR are close to the maximal growth rates of individual S. variabilis specimens, but are still up to one order of magnitude smaller than the AR of D. pertusum mounds. Periods of enhanced S. variabilis AR predominantly fall into glacial periods and glacial terminations that were characterized by a 60–90 m lower sea level. The formation of nearby D. pertusum mounds is also associated with the last glacial termination. We suggest that the short-term periods of coral growth and mound formation benefited from enhanced organic matter supply, either from the adjacent exposed shelf and coast and/or from enhanced sea-surface productivity. This organic matter became concentrated on a deeper water-mass boundary between South Atlantic Central Water and the Antarctic Intermediate Water and may have been distributed by a stronger hydrodynamic regime. Finally, periods of enhanced coral mound formation can also be linked to advection of nutrient-rich intermediate water masses that in turn might have (directly or indirectly) further facil

Cold-water corals (CWC) can form complex structures which provide refuge, nursery grounds and physical support for a diversity of other living organisms. However, irrespectively from such ecological significance, CWCs are still vulnerable to human pressures such as fishing, pollution, ocean acidification and global warming Providing coherent and representative conservation of vulnerable marine ecosystems including CWCs is one of the aims of the Marine Protected Areas networks being implemented across European seas and oceans under the EC Habitats Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the OSPAR Convention. In order to adequately represent ecosystem diversity, these initiatives require a standardised habitat classification that organises the variety of biological assemblages and provides consistent and functional criteria to map them across European Seas. One such classification system, EUNIS, enables a broad level classification of the deep sea based on abiotic and geomorphological features. More detailed lower biotope-related levels are currently under-developed, particularly with regards to deep-water habitats (>200 m depth). This paper proposes a hierarchical CWC biotope classification scheme that could be incorporated by existing classification schemes such as EUNIS. The scheme was developed within the EU FP7 project CoralFISH to capture the variability of CWC habitats identified using a wealth of seafloor imagery datasets from across the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. Depending on the resolution of the imagery being interpreted, this hierarchical scheme allows data to be recorded from broad CWC biotope categories down to detailed taxonomy-based levels, thereby providing a flexible yet valuable information level for management. Although this is a well-established technology for the study of subaerial environments, Ecotone AS has developed an underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) system to explore the properties of the seafloor. The aim of the project is to evaluate the potential of this instrument for mapping and monitoring benthic habitats in shallow and deep-water environments. For the first time, we tested this system at two sites in the Southern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea): the cold-water coral (CWC) habitat in the Bari Canyon and the Coralligenous habitat off Brindisi. We created a spectral library for each site, considering the different substrates and the main OOI reaching, where possible, the lower taxonomic rank. We applied the spectral angle mapper (SAM) supervised classification to map the areal extent of the Coralligenous and to recognize the major CWC habitat-formers. Despite some technical problems, the first results demonstrate the suitability of the UHI camera for habitat mapping and seabed monitoring, through the achievement of quantifiable and repeatable classifications.

In this work, we sought to document how submarine mass-movements influence the submarine landscape and associated habitat distributions on the upper portion of the northern Ionian Margin (eastern Mediterranean Sea) between 200 m to greater than 1,000 m in water depth (w.d.). In this area, mass-wasting processes have created unique morphological forms that, in turn, have generated high diversity for edaphic and hydrogeologic conditions; and these areas are marked by the patchy occurrence of varying natural benthic habitats. Surficial or sub-surficial Mass-Transport Deposits (MTDs) were documented by seismic and high-resolution morpho-bathymetric data and displayed dense aggregation for detached blocks spread over 1,200 km2 between 400 and 1,000 m in w.d.. Living Cold-Water Coral (CWC) communities populate the blocky region and form coral topped mounds. These habitats are important Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) that are exposed to human pressure in the deep sea. Through production of a detailed geomorphological map and an examination of published data on the extent and distribution of CWC communities in the area, we sought to document how comprehensive research into submarine slide topography should also take into account the peculiar characteristics of their biotopes.

In the Mediterranean, build-ups (created by coralline algae, Cladocora caespitosa, deep-water corals, vermetids, polychaetes and bacteria) and rhodolith beds are important hot-spots of biodiversity. Being severely threatened by anthropogenic impact and climate change, they have been included in international directives on environmental protection. This work wants to support the ongoing research on modern bioconstructions by providing further data on the long-term effects of environmental factors on these habitats. Our results are based on the analysis of the existing literature on the outcropping Quaternary successions of the Adriatic and Ionian coasts of peninsular Italy. The existing reports of build-ups and rhodalgal carbonates have been summarized in an homogeneous data-set and then studied to highlight distribution patterns in space and time. The analyses consistently outlined the importance of sedimentation rate in controlling the general distribution of build-ups and rhodalgal carbonates. The majority of the reports is concentrated south of the Gargano, where the sediment-load of the rivers is small. The majority of the reports is related to coralline algae, suggesting that they were the main carbonate producers during the period. C. caespitosa general distribution is mainly controlled by temperature, with most of the occurrences dating back to the warm periods of the late Ionian and of the Tarantian. Large build-ups of Cladocora are restricted to embayments and gulfs well-protected against storm waves. The distribution of the outcrops of deep-water corals is biased by the geological setting. A remarkable uplift is necessary to bring these corals from their original deep-water setting to elevated areas onshore. Consequently, most of the outcrops are in Southern Calabria which is characterized by a strong Quaternary uplift. Currents play a vital role in sustaining and developing deep water benthic habitats by mobilising food and nutrients to otherwise relatively barren parts of the seabed. Where sediment supply is significant, it can have a major influence on the development and morphology of these habitats. This study examines a segment of the Belgica Mound Province, NE Atlantic to better constrain the processes affecting a small-sized cold water coral (CWC) mound habitat and conversely, the hydrodynamic influence of CWC mounds on their own morphological development and surroundings. Here, we utilise ROV-mounted multibeam, ROV-video data, and sediment samples to investigate current processes, mound morphology, density and development. Detailed mapping shows that the area may have the highest density of coral mounds recorded so far, with three distinct mound types defined based on size, morphology and the presence and degree of distinct scour features. A residual current of 36–40 cm s−1 is estimated while large scour features suggest low-frequency, high-magnitude events. These 3 mound types are i) smaller mounds with no scour; ii) mounds with scour in one to two distinct directions and; iii) larger mounds with mound encircling scour. The differing mound types likely had a staggered initiation where younger mounds preferentially developed near clusters of pre-existing mounds. Given the high density of these small CWC mounds, we support the hypothesis that over time, this clustering may eventually lead to these mounds coalescing into larger coral mound features.

This work wants to support the ongoing research on modern bioconstructions by providing further data on the long-term effects of environmental factors on these habitats. Our results are based on the analysis of the existing literature on the outcropping Quaternary successions of the Adriatic and Ionian coasts of peninsular Italy. The existing reports of build-ups and rhodalgal carbonates have been summarized in an homogeneous data-set and then studied to highlight distribution patterns in space and time. The analyses consistently outlined the importance of sedimentation rate in controlling the general distribution of build-ups and rhodalgal carbonates. The majority of the reports is concentrated south of the Gargano, where the sediment-load of the rivers is small. The majority of the reports is related to coralline algae, suggesting that they were the main carbonate producers during the period. C. caespitosa general distribution is mainly controlled by temperature, with most of the occurrences dating back to the warm periods of the late Ionian and of the Tarantian. Large build-ups of Cladocora are restricted to embayments and gulfs well-protected against storm waves. The distribution of the outcrops of deep-water corals is biased by the geological setting. A remarkable uplift is necessary to bring these corals from their original deep-water setting to elevated areas onshore. Consequently, most of the outcrops are in Southern Calabria which is characterized by a strong Quaternary uplift. Currents play a vital role in sustaining and developing deep water benthic habitats by mobilising food and nutrients to otherwise relatively barren parts of the seabed. Where sediment supply is significant, it can have a major influence on the development and morphology of these habitats. This study examines a segment of the Belgica Mound Province, NE Atlantic to better constrain the processes affecting a small-sized cold water coral (CWC) mound habitat and conversely, the hydrodynamic influence of CWC mounds on their own morphological development and surroundings. Here, we utilise ROV-mounted multibeam, ROV-video data, and sediment samples to investigate current processes, mound morphology, density and development. Detailed mapping shows that the area may have the highest density of coral mounds recorded so far, with three distinct mound types defined based on size, morphology and the presence and degree of distinct scour features. A residual current of 36–40 cm s−1 is estimated while large scour features suggest low-frequency, high-magnitude events. These 3 mound types are i) smaller mounds with no scour; ii) mounds with scour in one to two distinct directions and; iii) larger mounds with mound encircling scour. The differing mound types likely had a staggered initiation where younger mounds preferentially developed near clusters of pre-existing mounds. Given the high density of these small CWC mounds, we support the hypothesis that over time, this clustering may eventually lead to these mounds coalescing into larger coral mound features.

Coarse carbonate sediments of cold-water coral (CWC) mounds are almost exclusively produced by scleractinian corals and associated calcifying organisms. Due to the sensitivity of several species to environmental changes, variations of benthic carbonate associations (BCA) through time can provide important insights on mound development stages. This study focuses on the BCA collected, through box- and gravity cores, from CWC mounds located in the Melilla Mound Field (MMF) and Pen Duick Escarpment (PDE). The main goal of this work is to characterize the composition of modern and fossil BCA and to relate its variation through time to oceanographic changes at regional and/or global scale. Our preliminary results are based on the analysis of samples collected during the MD 194 cruise and previous oceanographic expeditions (MD 169 and Belgica 09/14b). Observations on modern fauna from the PDE mounds have been carried out also on ROV videos collected during the Belgica 07/13 and 09/14b cruises. The modern BCA of the two examined mound areas are rather different. The PDE mound biocoenoses are characterized by scarce and low-diverse calcifying organisms that colonise dense (mostly fossil) dendrophylliid frameworks or rubble sparse in mud-dominated sediment. The modern MMF BCA are more diversified, dominated by Madrepora oculata and particularly rich in molluscs and bryozoans. Similarities found in the faunistic assemblages of the examined sediment cores hint at comparable environmental conditions in the past that favoured the development of Lophelia-dominated communities on both sides of the Gibraltar Strait

Cold-water coral (CWC) ecosystems occur worldwide and play a major role in the ocean's carbonate budget and atmospheric CO2 balance since the Danian (∼65m.y. ago). However their temporal and spatial evolution against climatic and oceanographic variability is still unclear. For the first time, we combine the main macrofaunal components of a sediment core from a CWC mound of the Melilla Mounds Field in the Eastern Alboran Sea with the associated microfauna and we highlight the importance of foraminifera and ostracods as indicators of CWC mound evolution in the paleorecord. Abundances of macrofauna along the core reveal alternating periods dominated by distinct CWC taxa (mostly Lophelia pertusa, Madrepora oculata) that correspond to major shifts in foraminiferal and ostracod assemblages. The period dominated by M. oculata coincides with a period characterized by increased export of refractory organic matter to the seafloor and rather unstable oceanographic conditions at the benthic boundary layer with periodically decreased water energy and oxygenation, variable bottom water temperature/density and increased sediment flow. The microfaunal and geochemical data strongly suggest thatM. oculata and in particular Dendrophylliidae show a higher tolerance to environmental changes than L. pertusa. Finally, we show evidence for sustained CWC growth during the Alleröd-Younger-Dryas in the Eastern Alboran Sea and that this period corresponds to stable benthic conditions with cold/dense and well oxygenated bottom waters, high fluxes of labile organic matter and relatively strong bottom currents. An Early Pleistocene benthic community, discovered inside the Rumena Cave in NW Sicily, Italy, was studied. Analysis of the community led to the recognition of several encrusting species - notably scleractinians, bryozoans, serpuloideans, cirripeds, foraminifera and brachiopods - and borings mostly referable to the ichnogenus Gastrochaenolites. All fossils detected are typical of the present-day hard-surface submarine cave biota, at both high taxonomic rank and species level. The biogenic crust, restricted to a few sectors of the cave but locally up to few centimetres thick, largely consist of scleractinians, mainly represented by dendrophylliids. Bryozoans and serpuloideans are also present with Hippaliosina depressa and Spiraserpula massiliensis, locally forming multi-layered sheets and dense specimen aggregates, respectively. Basing mostly on the composition of the encrusting community and on morphological/morphometric features of some species, it has been hypothesized that at least part of the cave was blind when the crust formed, possibly at relatively shallow depth in a sheltered setting or, more probably, at higher depths, below the fair weather swell zone. Encrustations and borings on the rocky cave ceiling and on occasional speleothems broken surfaces document subsequent phases of cave submersion/colonization separated by emersion/erosion phases. The importance of the Early Pleistocene fossils of the Rumena Cave for the knowledge of submarine cave communities through time and for the understanding of sea-level variations and the uplift of the area has been remarked.

Although zooxanthellate corals are well known for their ecophenotypic variations, there is increasing evidence that azooxanthellate species also harbour a high degree of plasticity. Desmophyllum dianthus, a widespread solitary coral, exhibits a high degree of morphological variation in corallum forms that has never been analysed quantitatively. To assess if the clear morphological variation of D. dianthus follows a specific pattern based on environmental (or others) variables, this study combines three different morphometric approaches: (1) classical linear external morphology, (2) use of three-dimensional coordinates landmarks, and (3) linear measurements and counts made of cnidocyst features. Comparative morphological characterization of D. dianthus specimens shows a pattern of intraspecific variation over a wide ecological and biogeographic range. However, additional future studies on this and other proposed cosmopolitan species, including a similar sampling effort in localities and specimens, will be useful to explore the existence of common global patterns of morphological variability. Hypotheses for intraspecific polymorphism are discussed to explain the incongruence between the obtained results and the seemingly high morphological variability observed within D. dianthus.

In this study, we mapped the distribution of Cold-Water Coral (CWC) habitats on the northern Ionian Margin (Mediterranean Sea), with an emphasis on assessing coral coverage at various spatial scales over an area of 2,000 km 2 between 120 and 1,400 m of water depth. Our work made use of a set of data obtained from ship-based research surveys. Multi-scale seafloor mapping data, video inspections, and previous results from sediment samples were integrated and analyzed using Geographic Information System (GIS)-based tools. Results obtained from the application of spatial and textural analytical techniques to acoustic meso-scale maps (i.e. a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the seafloor at a 40 m grid cell size and associated terrain parameters) and large-scale maps (i.e. Side-Scan Sonar (SSS) mosaics of 1 m in resolution ground-truthed using underwater video observations) were integrated and revealed that, at the meso-scale level, the main morphological pattern (i.e. the aggregation of mound-like features) associated with CWC habitat occurrences was widespread over a total area of 600 km2. Single coral mounds were isolated from the DTM and represented the geomorphic proxies used to model coral distributions within the investigated area. Coral mounds spanned a total area of 68 km2 where different coral facies (characterized using video analyses and mapped on SSS mosaics) represent the dominant macro-habitat. We also mapped and classified anthropogenic threats that were identifiable within the examined videos, and, here, discuss their relationship to the mapped distribution of coral habitats and mounds. The combined results (from multi-scale habitat mapping and observations of the distribution of anthropogenic threats) provide the first quantitative assessment of CWC coverage for a Mediterranean province and document the relevant role of seafloor geomorphology in influencing habitat vulnerability to different types of human pressures. © 2014 Savini et al.

Cold-water coral (CWC) mounds located along the Atlantic and Mediterranean margins have been subject of intensive research during the last 15 years. Data collected in over a hundred of oceanographic cruises have highly increased our knowledge on CWC mound typologies, settings and on the environmental factors controlling their evolution. Nevertheless, there is still a poor knowledge about calcifying benthic organisms characterizing CWC communities, though their skeletal accumulation represents the dominant component of most mound facies and can provide important insights on the mound evolutionary stages. This study focuses on benthic carbonate associations (BCA) collected, through box- and gravity cores, from selected CWC mounds located in four key regions: 1. Santa Maria di Leuca CWC Province, Ionian Sea, Central Mediterranean; 2. Melilla Mound Field, Alboran Sea, Western Mediterranean; 3. Pen Duick scarpment, Gulf of Cadiz, NE Atlantic; 4. Moira Mounds, Porcupine Seabight, NE Atlantic. The main goals of this work are (1) to characterize modern BCA (bio- and thanatocoenoses) from the examined sites and to relate their spatial distribution to patterns in environmental variables and (2) to identify and interpret BCA variations through time in order to better understand the mound evolutionary processes. Our preliminary results show that the modern BCA from the four analyzed regions share major common taxonomic components. Their spatial distribution, either within a single region or a single mound, is mostly influenced by local environmental variables such as the seafloor topography, the substrate composition and the intensity of bottom currents. We document a remarkable abundance of the tubeworm Serpula vermicularis Linnaeus, 1767, in bathyal coral habitats from the Bari Canyon System in the southern Adriatic Sea. Here, the specimens of S. vermicularis grow from muddy substrate either as isolated individuals or as localized clusters of multiple individuals. Peculiar tube aggregations are also associated with Madrepora oculata build-ups and other stony corals including Desmophyllum dianthus. Three types of coral-serpulid (C-S) frameworks have been recognized based upon size and shape. The abundance of S. vermicularis increases with the size of C-S frameworks, which results from superimposition, overgrowth, and/or intergrowth of scleractinians and serpulids. Several generations of S. vermicularis contribute to the C-S frameworks, each most probably accounting for more than 8 years and presumably existing in the area for the last hundreds of years. At a meso-scale, the distribution pattern of serpulids seems to be mainly governed by currents and siltation. A further constraint is the co-occurring solitary coral D. dianthus within frameworks. The successful sea-bottom colonization by S. vermicularis and associated C-S frameworks is possibly related to a high oxygen content and food supply derived from the North Adriatic Dense Water (NAdDW). The flourishing populations of S. vermicularis as well as the peculiarity of C-S frameworks suggest that deep-sea canyons provide important benthic habitats in bathyal environments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

During a research cruise carried out in April 2010, aimed at updating the knowledge on the biodiversity of the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) cold-water coral province (Mediterranean Sea), a facies of the sea pen Kophobelemnon stelliferum (Muller, 1776) was found on mud-dominated bottoms. This finding represents a new species and a new habitat record from the SML coral province as well as a new bathyal facies in the whole Central Mediterranean Sea. The colonies were collected using an epi-benthic sledge, at depths between 400 and 470 m. A significant positive relationship between polyp number and colony length was detected. Density of the colonies ranged from 0.003 to 0.038 N m 2. Differences and affinities between Mediterranean and Atlantic occurrences of K. stelliferum are discussed.

The examined bathyal area, ranging from about 300 to 1100 m water depth, is located along the southern Apulian continental slope. It includes the so-called Cold-Water Coral (CWC) Mound Province of Santa Maria di Leuca and is characterized by three main physiographic domains: from east to west (1) a large mass-transport deposition area where mound-like features occur, (2) a prominent ridge covered by sparse debris deposits where drift sedimentation is documented, and (3) a series of narrow ridges and fault scarps that outline large erosive features (e.g., canyons). The analysis of videos, samples and acoustic facies from ten selected sites shows that both live and dead CWCs (mostly represented by the scleractinian species Madrepora oculata, Lophelia pertusa and Desmophyllum dianthus) occur in all three domains. In particular, video and sample analyses have allowed us to distinguish three main habitat groups (coral-, hardground- and muddominated habitats) which contain diverse subhabitats, generally grading into each other. By combining sample/video data with acoustic facies, we can assert that (a) extensive coral thickets, formed by dead and live colonies of M. oculata and L. pertusa, characterize the upper part of several mound-like structures of the eastern sector and, most probably, the top of elongated ridges from the western sector, (b) small-scale bioconstructions, dominated by the solitary gregarious species D. dianthus, preferentially occur along subvertical and overhanging walls of the western sector, (c) mud-dominated facies are spread on horizontal to gently sloping bottoms of all three sectors. Our study highlights a significant spatial heterogeneity of the bathyal benthic habitats from the southern Apulian slope. This seems to well reflect the complexity of variable geomorphic and/or hydrographic processes acting upon the slope. Recent investigations of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea carried out during the GECO cruise with RV Urania provided a substantial number of new cold-water coral (CWC) records, including branching and solitary scleractinian species. These new sites are located along steep escarpments and on topographic highs along the margins of Crete, Karpathos, and Rhodes. The majority of the corals represent fossil occurrences, predominantly Late Pleistocene assemblages. Our research documents that the Eastern Mediterranean Basin has been colonized by CWC at favorable times during the Last Glacial, in particular during the Younger Dryas. Schizocyathus fissilis is reported for the first time for the Mediterranean, while the finding of Ceratotrochus magnaghii represents the first record for the Eastern Mediterranean. Various coral facies occur on the southerly island slopes of Crete, Karpathos, and Rhodes, including hardgrounds and loose skeletal sediments. Hardgrounds occur on steep topographies between ca. 500 and 1,700 m, and can conveniently be subdivided as (1) Neopycnodonte-Desmophyllum framestone, (2) Desmophyllum-Caryophyllia framestone, (3) Madrepora-Lophelia rudstone, (4) Pelagic mudstone and wackestone, and (5) Siliciclastic-carbonate conglomerate and breccia. Unconsolidated skeletal sediments containing corals mainly occur on gentler topographic situations between ca. 140 and 600 m and can be subdivided as: (A) Lophelia-Madrepora rubble, (B) Dendrophyllia rubble, (C) Stenocyathus rubble, (D) Caryophyllia calveri rubble, and (E) fine-grained sediment with octocoral axes. Many of these facies types are also present in the western part of the Mediterranean and have fossil representatives from the Pleistocene to the Recent. Radiocarbon dating (AMS- 14C) reveals Younger Dryas ages between 12.4 and 12.0 ka cal BP for Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata. Desmophyllum dianthus occurs during the Last Glacial Maximum (21.8 ka cal BP) and the Younger Dryas (11.7 ka cal BP), as wel

Using a towed camera system, a total of 422 individuals belonging to 62 taxa (includ- ing 33 identified species) were counted in the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) coral province (Mediterranean Sea). Our findings update the knowledge of the biodiversity of this area and of the depth records of several species. The presence of coral mounds mostly in the north-eastern sector of the SML coral province seems to influence the large scale distribution of the deep-sea ben- thopelagic fauna, playing the role of attraction-refuge with respect to the barren muddy bottoms where fishing occurs in northern areas. Multiple Correspondence Analysis identified 3 main taxa groups: (1) rather strictly linked to the bottom, resting or moving on the seabed, often sheltering and feeding; (2) mostly swimming in the water column and mostly observed on rugged bottoms; and (3) actively swimming or hovering near the seabed. The behavioural patterns largely related to activity and position of the fauna seem to determine their small-scale distribution. The effects of different benthic macrohabitats appear to be less important and the depth within the bathymetric range examined even less so. The behavioural patterns reflect aspects of the species life strate- gies, revealing common features in phylogenetically and ecologically distant species. The teleost Helicolenus dactylopterus exhibited a clear behavioural pattern of resting on the seabed in differ- ent macrohabitats. The golden shrimp Plesionika martia and the fish Pagellus bogaraveo seem to be associated with the presence of corals

Recent researches on Mediterranean deep-sea environments have shown that cold-water coral (CWC) communities are more flourishing and spread than previously thought. Nevertheless, still little is known about the environmental parameters which affect their spatial distribution and growth. In order to characterize and classify the different habitat types from the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) CWC province and better understand the SML coral ecology, we have examined ROV videos, seabed samples, recruitment of benthic organisms on settlement plates and coral behavior in aquarium. Our studies are currently in progress and are based on data collected during the CoralFISH, the APLABES and the HERMES programmes. Preliminary results can be summarized as follows: 1) Video analyses have so far revealed ten different habitat types which can be categorized in three main groups (coral-, hardground- and mud-dominated habitats). 2) Benthic macrofauna, nannoplankton assemblage and sediment granulometry of box-cores collected during the CoralFISH cruise (April 2010) confirm a remarkable heterogeneity of the SML seafloor and high sediment reworking, already observed during previous studies. 3) Recent and sub-Recent SML mollusk species (53 Bivalvia, 2 Scaphopoda, 45 Gastropoda) are more numerous than previously known and largely dominated by coral attached elements (Anomiidae, Pectinidae). 4) The annual recruitment rate of scleractinians and serpulids on settlement plates is higher in areas with densely-packed coral colonies and varies with plate orientations. 5) SML Madrepora oculata, Lophelia pertusa and Desmophyllum dianthus show a growth rate of at least 7, 3 and 1 mm year-1, respectively. 6) In aquarium, SML solitary scleractinian species are more resistant than colonial ones to unstable physico-chemical conditions.

Two sites (MS04 and MS06) from the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) Coral Province were analyzed by a video and acoustic survey during the National Italian Project Apulian Plateau Bank Ecosystem Study (APLABES). Site MS04 (Atlantis Mound) is characterized by a sub-conical mound, 500 m wide and 25 m high, located at a water depth of about 650 m. Site MS06 (Yellow Chain) comprises several elongated reliefs (NNW-SSE-oriented), up to 25 m high and 500 m in maximum lateral extent, located at a depth of between 490 and 540 m. At both sites, two main mesohabitats (mound and intermound) containing several coral-bearing and -barren macrohabitats were observed in recorded videos and detected in side-scan sonographs. The coral-rich macrohabitats, characterized by densely packed colonies of the scleractinians Madrepora oculata and, secondarily, Lophelia pertusa (M/L), are typically restricted to the mound areas. The mud-dominated ones, almost devoid of M/L colonies, are more common within the intermound mesohabitat. However, on the most extensive mounds, both macrohabitat typologies exist. They are heterogeneously distributed on the mound surface, often showing a clear differentiation along two opposite flanks of the same topographic feature. M/L-rich macrohabitats are preferentially located on top and along the mound northeastern flank, showing a typical step-like distribution, probably reflecting the arrangement of hard substrate outcrops. Along this flank, fan-shaped Madrepora colonies and sponges are often oriented NNW-SSE, implying, together with other evidence, a primary southwestern current flow. The hard-bottom macrohabitats of the southwestern mound flank are generally restricted to sparse exposed, subvertical to overhanging scarps as well as to heterometric boulders located at the scarp base. Their fauna is mainly characterized by small-sized organisms (such as sponges and solitary scleractinians) although m-sized boulders may locally host very large antipatharian colonies

Thanatofacies and the skeletonized components of the living facies, from which they originate have been studied from the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) deep-water coral mound province. Faunal analysis was carried out by means of bottom sampling and underwater video observations, taking into account all benthic taxonomic groups, mostly corals, molluscs, serpulids, bryozoans, ostracods, foraminifers and barnacles, which permitted recognition of six different facies. These thanatofacies are easily distinguishable and appear to be largely corresponding and overlapping with related living facies. Some occur in mound areas, others in the intermound ones. They are as follows: the Framework-building Coral facies (FC), characterised by colonial corals, mostly Madrepora oculata; the Coral Rubble facies (CR), with proximal and distal aspects, characterised by large- to small-sized and densely to loosely packed coral fragments; the Solitary Coral facies (SC), dominated by different species depending on the availability and dimensions of hard exploitable surfaces; the Gryphus and Isidella facies (GI) in relatively coarse-grained bottoms; the Mollusc Mud facies (MM) and the Foraminifer Mud facies (FM) in comparably homogeneous silty bottoms. Facies distribution and spatial variability are discussed, in relation to hydrology and sea-floor topography. Furthermore, the SML facies are compared with living facies from the present-day Mediterranean and Pleistocene sediments of the same area. Data on bioclastic assemblages can serve for comparison with other recent aphotic, non-tropical carbonates. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Shallow sediment lithology and stratigraphy were investigated at selected areas off Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) on the Apulian margin between 350 and 1200 m water depth, in order to define the sea-bottom character on which coral mounds have developed. According to existing geophysical data and in-situ observations, deep coral growth in the SML area creates patches of colonies typically settled on hard substrates on the upper flanks and/or near the top of mound-like structures and elongated ridges. The sedimentary stratigraphy is strongly influenced by the local topography, which is modeled by tectonic and geomorphological forcing: large-scale erosional features, slope failure and sediment mass accumulation are evident from seismic investigations. Additionally, sites of preferential sediment accumulation due to the action of bottom currents are identified. As a result, a complex sedimentary pattern characterizes this part of the Apulian margin, with strong lateral variability in sediment type and age. Although hemipelagic silty clay constitutes the main lithology, there are sites characterized by periodic accumulation of silt and fine sand and local re-deposition of coarse biogenic sand from the surrounding areas and from shallower depths. Excluding one site, where mid-Pleistocene sediments are brought very close to the bottom surface due to wide-scale erosion, all collected sediments are late Pleistocene to Holocene in age and fall biostratigraphically within the Emiliania huxleyi acme nannofossil zone. Reworking, detected through nannofossil analysis, is common in most cores, excluding the ones taken from topographic highs, and is variable in extent from site to site and within the sediment column; it includes Cretaceous to Early Pleistocene species, suggesting provenance from extended successions or various stratigraphic levels, outcropping on the submerged Apulian margin or in adjacent land sections. This paper presents the first compilation of information on the spatial distribution of scleractinian cold-water corals in the Gulf of Cádiz based on literature research and own observations (video footage, sediment samples). Scleractinian cold-water corals are widely distributed along the Spanish and Moroccan margins in the Gulf of Cádiz, where they are mainly associated with mud volcanoes, diapiric ridges, steep fault escarpments, and coral mounds. Dendrophyllia cornigera, Dendrophyllia alternata, Eguchipsammia cornucopia, Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa are the most abundant reef-forming species. Today, they are almost solely present as isolated patches of fossil coral and coral rubble. The absence of living scleractinian corals is likely related to a reduced food supply caused by low productivity and diminished tidal effects. In contrast, during the past 48 kyr scleractinian corals were abundant in the Gulf of Cádiz, although their occurrence demonstrates no relationship with main climatic or oceanographic changes. Nevertheless, there exists a conspicuous relationship when the main species are considered separately. Dendrophylliids are associated with periods of relatively stable and warm conditions. The occurrence of L. pertusa mainly clusters within the last glacial when bottom current strength in the Gulf of Cádiz was enhanced and long-term stable conditions existed in terms of temperature. Background In recent years, several types of molecular markers and new microscale skeletal characters have shown potential as powerful tools for phylogenetic reconstructions and higher-level taxonomy of scleractinian corals. Nonetheless, discrimination of closely related taxa is still highly controversial in scleractinian coral research. Here we used newly sequenced complete mitochondrial genomes and 30 microsatellites to define the genetic divergence between two closely related azooxanthellate taxa of the family Caryophylliidae: solitary Desmophyllum dianthus and colonial Lophelia pertusa. Results In the mitochondrial control region, an astonishing 99.8 % of nucleotides between L. pertusa and D. dianthus were identical. Variability of the mitochondrial genomes of the two species is represented by only 12 non-synonymous out of 19 total nucleotide substitutions. Microsatellite sequence (37 loci) analysis of L. pertusa and D. dianthus showed genetic similarity is about 97 %. Our results also indicated that L. pertusa and D. dianthus show high skeletal plasticity in corallum shape and similarity in skeletal ontogeny, micromorphological (septal and wall granulations) and microstructural characters (arrangement of rapid accretion deposits, thickening deposits). Conclusions Molecularly and morphologically, the solitary Desmophyllum and the dendroid Lophelia appear to be significantly more similar to each other than other unambiguous coral genera analysed to date. This consequently leads to ascribe both taxa under the generic name Desmophyllum (priority by date of publication). Findings of this study demonstrate that coloniality may not be a robust taxonomic character in scleractinian corals.

Aberrant DNA methylation is a critical feature of cancer. Epigenetic therapy seeks to reverse these changes to restore normal gene expression. DNA demethylating agents, including 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (DAC), are currently used to treat certain leukemias, and can sensitize solid tumors to chemotherapy and immunotherapy. However, it has been difficult to pin the clinical efficacy of these agents to specific demethylation events, and the factors that contribute to the durability of response remain largely unknown. Here we examined the genome-wide kinetics of DAC-induced DNA demethylation and subsequent remethylation after drug withdrawal in breast cancer cells. We find that CpGs differ in both their susceptibility to demethylation and propensity for remethylation after drug removal. DAC-induced demethylation was most apparent at CpGs with higher initial methylation levels and further from CpG islands. Once demethylated, such sites exhibited varied remethylation potentials. The most rapidly remethylating CpGs regained >75% of their starting methylation within a month of drug withdrawal. These sites had higher pretreatment methylation levels, were enriched in gene bodies, marked by H3K36me3, and tended to be methylated in normal breast cells. In contrast, a more resistant class of CpG sites failed to regain even 20% of their initial methylation after 3 months. These sites had lower pretreatment methylation levels, were within or near CpG islands, marked by H3K79me2 or H3K4me2/3, and were overrepresented in sites that become aberrantly hypermethylated in breast cancers. Thus, whereas DAC-induced demethylation affects both endogenous and aberrantly methylated sites, tumor-specific hypermethylation is more slowly regained, even as normal methylation promptly recovers. Taken together, these data suggest that the durability of DAC response is linked to its selective ability to stably reset at least a portion of the cancer methylome.
