The large wooden resonator of the Sarasvati Veena amplifies and radiates the sound in almost all directions. The directional and spatial dependence of this radiation is studied in conjunction with the mode shapes of the top plate of the resonator. Sound radiation patterns are simulated theoretically using the nodal displacement data obtained from the numerical modal analysis of the resonator. The experimental analysis involves the manual plucking of the Veena string. The radiated sound is recorded by placing microphones around the resonator in circular arrays of different radii in the different planes. These combinations of arrays at different distances and planes provide a thorough knowledge of sound radiating out of the resonator. The intensities of different frequencies in the recorded spectral data as functions of direction and distance from the approximate center of the top plate of the resonator are studied. Experimentally measured patterns show the importance of the top plate over the body of the resonator. Theoretical and experimental radiation patterns for different harmonics of the plucked string are compared and a good match is observed. The behavior of the radiating sound in the different planes at different radial distances from the assumed center is discussed.

An attempt is made to establish the dependence of the timbre of the Sarasvati veena, a South Indian string instrument, on its extended bridge. The equation of motion for a plucked string vibrating against the extended boundary at the bridge is solved numerically. The solution is analyzed for timbre characteristics, which show energy redistribution among the higher harmonics, as well as revival of higher harmonics with time. The variation of timbre with bridge slope and curvature are analyzed. These results are validated by comparison with corresponding analysis of acoustic data gathered from experiments performed on a sonometer, whose knife edge is replaced by the bridge of the veena.

This study aims to characterize and standardize the Sarasvati Veena of South India. The instrument is very unique in the way in which it is manufactured and played. This instrument is often tuned relative to the accompanying instruments. The aim of the study was to find out the optimum tuning frequency for a particular Veena. The natural frequency of the body of the Veena was determined by conducting an impact test. The strings of the Veena were tuned to the corresponding body frequency to obtain resonance and FFT plots were generated to see the frequency variation. The optimum tuning frequency for a given Veena was obtained such that the body undergoes conductive resonance when tuned to that particular frequency. Acoustic readings were taken using a sound level meter to confirm on the results obtained by impact test.

We show that if this entanglement is taken into account, one can provide a simpler answer to Einstein. We also derive the Englert-Greenberger-Yasin duality relation from the entanglement between the particle and the recoiling slit. In addition, we show that the Englert-Greenberger-Yasin duality relation can also be thought of as a consequence of the sum uncertainty relation for certain observables of the recoiling slit. We study soliton solutions in supersymmetric scalar field theory with a class of potentials. We study both bosonic and fermionic zero-modes around the soliton solution. We study two possible couplings of gauge fields to these models. While the Born-Infeld like coupling has one normalizable mode (the zero mode), the other kind of coupling has no normalizable modes. We show that quantum mechanical problem which determines the spectrum of fluctuation modes of the scalar, fermion and the gauge field is identical. We study soliton solutions in scalar field theory with a variety of unbounded potentials. A subset of these potentials have Gaussian lump solutions and their fluctuation spectrum is governed by the harmonic oscillator problem. These lumps are unstable with one tachyonic mode. Soliton solutions in several other classes of potentials are stable and are of kink type. The problem of the stability of these solutions is related to a supersymmetric quantum mechanics problem. The fluctuation spectrum is not equispaced and does not contain any tachyonic mode.
