Microorganisms, microbiomes, and their products (e.g., enzymes, metabolites, antibiotics, etc.) are key players in the functioning of both natural and anthropized Earth ecosystems; they can be exploited for both research purposes and biotechnological applications, including fighting the big challenges of our era, such as climate change. Culture collections (CCs) and microbial Biological Resource Centres (mBRCs) are repositories of microorganisms that investigate and safeguard biodiversity and facilitate the scientific and industrial communities’ access to microbial strains and related know-how by providing external users with skills and services. Considering this, CCs and mBRCs are pivotal institutions for the valorisation of microorganisms, the safeguarding of life, and the fostering of excellent bioscience. The aim of this review is to present the state-of-the-art of Italian CCs and mBRCs, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities. Italy is, indeed, a hotspot of microbial biodiversity with a high rate of endemism and incredible potential, not only for the food and beverage sector (i.e., “Made in Italy” products), where microorganisms can have a beneficial or a spoiling function, but also to guarantee environmental sustainability and foster the bioeconomy through the design of new bioprocesses and products. However, weaknesses, such as the lack of management rules in accordance with international quality standards, are also analysed and ways of overcoming them are discussed. In this context, an overview is given of the Joint Research Unit MIRRI-IT and the European-funded SUS-MIRRI.IT project, which aims to improve the management and sustainability of Italian microbial collections, and serves as a starting point for an innovative revolution in the context of CCs and mBRCs worldwide.

Background Resilience Hubs provide mental health screening, facilitation of access and direct provision of psychosocial support for health and social care keyworkers in England affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Aim To explore implementation of the Hubs, including characteristics of staff using the services, support accessed, costing data and a range of stakeholder perspectives on the barriers and enablers to Hub use and implementation of staff well-being support within the context of the pandemic. Design Mixed-methods evaluation. Setting Four Resilience Hubs. Methods Findings were integrated via mixed-method case studies, including: analyses of Hub mental health screening (N = 1973); follow-up questionnaire data (N = 299) on service use and health status of Hub clients; economic information provided by the Hubs; 63 interviews with Hub staff, wider stakeholders, Hub clients and keyworkers who did not use the Hubs. Results Findings were consistent across Hubs and workstreams. Most Hub clients were NHS staff. Under-represented groups included men, keyworkers from minority ethnic communities, care homes and emergency services staff. Clients reported comorbid mental health needs across multiple domains (anxiety; depression; post-traumatic stress; alcohol use; functioning). Their health status was lower than population norms and relevant pre-pandemic data. Several factors predicted higher needs, but having pre-pandemic emotional well-being concerns was one of the most robust predictors of higher need. Sixty per cent of participants who completed follow-up questionnaires reported receiving mental health support since Hub screening, most of which was directly or indirectly due to Hub support. BACKGROUND: House dust mite (HDM) is the most common allergen trigger globally for allergic rhinitis and atopic asthma. OBJECTIVES: To expedite accurate confirmation of allergen sensitization, we designed fluorescent allergen tetramers to directly stain specific IgE on basophils to detect specific allergen sensitization using the flow cytometric CytoBas assay. METHODS: Recombinant proteins of major HDM allergens (component), Der f 1, Der p 1, and Der p 2 were biotinylated and conjugated with fluorochrome streptavidins as tetramers. Blood samples from 64 patients who are HDM-allergic and 26 controls that are non-HDM-sensitized were incubated with allergen tetramers for evaluation of basophil binding (CytoBas) and activation (BAT) with flow cytometry. RESULTS: The tetramers effectively bound and activated basophils from patients who are allergic but not from controls who are nonsensitized. CytoBas with Der p 1 as a single allergen had comparable sensitivity and specificity (92% and 100%) to BAT (91% and 100%) in detecting allergen sensitization, as did CytoBas with Der p 2 (95% and 96%) to BAT (95% and 87%). A positive staining for Der p 1 and/or Der p 2 in CytoBas was 100% sensitive and 96% specific for HDM allergy. CONCLUSIONS: CytoBas has diagnostic accuracy for group 1 and group 2 HDM allergens that is comparable to BAT, but with additional advantages of multiple allergen components in a single tube and no requirement for in vitro basophil activation. These findings endorse a single, multiplex CytoBas assay for accurate and component-resolved diagnosis of aeroallergen sensitization in patients with allergic asthma and/or rhinitis.

Background Trauma is prevalent amongst early psychosis patients and associated with adverse outcomes. Past trials of trauma-focused therapy have focused on chronic patients with psychosis/schizophrenia and comorbid Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). We aimed to determine the feasibility of a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for psychosis (EMDRp) intervention for early psychosis service users. Methods A single-blind RCT comparing 16 sessions of EMDRp + TAU v. TAU only was conducted. Participants completed baseline, 6-month and 12-month post-randomization assessments. EMDRp and trial assessments were delivered both in-person and remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions. Feasibility outcomes were recruitment and retention, therapy attendance/engagement, adherence to EMDRp treatment protocol, and the 'promise of efficacy' of EMDRp on relevant clinical outcomes. Results Sixty participants (100% of the recruitment target) received TAU or EMDR + TAU. 83% completed at least one follow-up assessment, with 74% at 6-month and 70% at 12-month. 74% of EMDRp + TAU participants received at least eight therapy sessions and 97% rated therapy sessions demonstrated good treatment fidelity. At 6-month, there were signals of promise of efficacy of EMDRp + TAU v. TAU for total psychotic symptoms (PANSS), subjective recovery from psychosis, PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and general health status. Signals of efficacy at 12-month were less pronounced but remained robust for PTSD symptoms and general health status. Conclusions The trial feasibility criteria were fully met, and EMDRp was associated with promising signals of efficacy on a range of valuable clinical outcomes. A larger-scale, multi-center trial of EMDRp is feasible and warranted.

Objective(s): There are high rates of trauma in people who experience psychosis and a focus on the negative impact. The current study explores people’s perceptions of factors that facilitate positive adjustment and Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) following trauma, which is important for developing interventions to support resilience and well-being. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were completed by eleven people with experiences of both trauma and psychosis. Transcripts were subject to thematic analysis. Results: Participants welcomed the idea of growth and stressed the importance of hearing growth stories from other people with similar experiences and practitioners. However, growth was considered a sensitive topic that clinicians should introduce tentatively to not undermine the potential suffering caused by trauma. Participants effectively used various strategies to deal with their traumas, including some typically considered maladaptive by clinicians (e.g., avoidance and self-harm). Conclusion: When working with trauma in the context of psychosis, mental health professionals should formulate behaviours in terms of whether or not they are functional to a specific moment and environment, rather than routinely consider methods of coping as adaptive or maladaptive. Our findings also highlight the importance of assessing and supporting recovery from trauma rather than just from psychotic symptoms and suggest that clinicians should offer interventions for fostering PTG in psychosis, such as supporting access to a diverse range of narratives about adapting to life beyond trauma.

Background: NHS England funded 40 Mental Health and Wellbeing Hubs to support health and social care staff affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to document variations in how national guidance was adapted to the local contexts of four Hubs in the North of England. Methods: We used a modified version of Price’s (2019) service mapping methodology. Service level data were used to inform the analysis. A mapping template was adapted from a range of tools, including the European Service Mapping Schedule, and reviewed by Hub leads. Key data included service model; staffing; and interventions. Data were collected between March 2021 – March 2022 by site research assistants. Findings were accuracy-checked by Hub leads, and a logic model developed to theorise how the Hubs may effect change. Results: Hub goals and service models closely reflected guidance; offering: proactive outreach; team-based support; clinical assessment; onward referral, and rapid access to mental health support (in-house and external). Implementation reflected a service context of a client group with high mental health need, and high waiting times at external mental health services. Hubs were predominantly staffed by experienced clinicians, to manage these mental health presentations and organisational working. Formulation-based psychological assessment and the provision of direct therapy were not core functions of the NHS England model, however all Hubs incorporated these adaptations into their service models in response to local contexts, such as extensive waiting lists within external services, and/or client presentations falling between gaps in existing service provision. Finally, a standalone clinical records system was seen as important to reassure Hub users of confidentiality. Other more nuanced variation depended on localised contexts. BACKGROUND: Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for grass pollen allergy can modify the natural history of allergic rhinitis and is associated with increased allergen-specific IgG4 . IgG4 competitively inhibits functional IgE on the surface of effector cells, such as mast cells and basophils, from binding to allergens. To further understand the important role memory B-cell (Bmem) responses play in mediating the beneficial effects of SLIT, we assessed changes in allergen-specific Bmem subsets induced by SLIT for grass pollen allergy. METHODS: Blood samples were collected twice outside the pollen season from twenty-seven patients with sensitization to ryegrass pollen (RGP; Lolium perenne) and seasonal rhinoconjunctivitis. Thirteen received 4-month pre-seasonal SLIT for grass pollen allergy, and 14 received standard pharmacotherapy only. Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on FACS-purified Lol p 1-specific Bmem before and after SLIT from four patients, and significant genes were validated by flow cytometry on the total cohort. RESULTS: Four months of SLIT increased RGP-specific IgE and IgG4 in serum and induced two Lol p 1-specific Bmem subsets with unique transcriptional profiles. Both subsets had upregulated expression of beta 1 integrin ITGB1 (CD29), whereas IGHE (IgE), IGHG4 (IgG4 ), FCER2 (CD23), and IL13RA1 were upregulated in one subset. There was an increase in the proportion of Lol p 1+ Bmem expressing surface IgG4 , CD23, and CD29 after SLIT. CONCLUSIONS: A clinically successful 4 months course of SLIT for grass pollen allergy induces two transcriptionally unique Bmem fates. Associated changes in surface-expressed proteins on these Bmem subsets can be used as early biomarkers for treatment effects.

Aquaculture has been one of the fastest-growing food production systems sectors for over three decades. With its growth, the demand for alternative, cheaper and high-quality feed ingredients is also increasing. Innovation investments on providing new functional feed alternatives have yielded several viable alternative raw materials. Considering all the current feed ingredients, their circular adaption in the aquafeed manufacturing industry is clearly of the utmost importance to achieve sustainable aquaculture in the near future. The use of terrestrial plant materials and animal by-products predominantly used in aquafeed ingredients puts a heavily reliance on terrestrial agroecosystems, which also has its own sustainability concerns. Therefore, the aquafeed industry needs to progress with functional and sustainable alternative raw materials for feed that must be more resilient and consistent, considering a circular perspective. In this review, we assess the current trends in using various marine organisms, ranging from microorganisms (including fungi, thraustochytrids, microalgae and bacteria) to macroalgae and macroinvertebrates as viable biological feed resources. This review focuses on the trend of circular use of resources and the development of new value chains. In this, we present a perspective of promoting novel circular economy value chains that promote the re-use of biological resources as valuable feed ingredients. Thus, we highlight some potentially important marine-derived resources that deserve further investigations for improving or addressing circular aquaculture.

This article outlines a feasibility study to investigate the potential of measuring the support needs of adult service users of a sexual assault referral centre (SARC). A self-completion questionnaire was designed with the aim of capturing these needs, as well as how they change over time and with support provided. The questionnaire underwent revisions following consultations with organisations representing survivors. Survivors of sexual assault who attended Saint Mary’s SARC were invited to complete a questionnaire at three-month intervals after their first visit to the SARC. The process of recruitment was necessarily complex, potentially compounding the issue of low response: only 18 participants completed the questionnaire at the first time point, and only nine of those completed a follow-up questionnaire three months later. The responses demonstrated the value of connecting information gathered by forensic physicians with a social survey. This study design reduced the potential of re-traumatisation by avoiding the need for participants to revisit any details of the alleged assault. More work is required to understand what methods will help establish an enduring commitment to completing follow-up questionnaires from a population dealing with the aftermath of trauma.

A substantial proportion of cancer patients do not benefit from platinum-based chemotherapy (CT) due to the emergence of drug resistance. Here, we apply elemental imaging to the mapping of CT biodistribution after therapy in residual colorectal cancer and achieve a comprehensive analysis of the genetic program induced by oxaliplatin-based CT in the tumor microenvironment. We show that oxaliplatin is largely retained by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) long time after the treatment ceased. We determine that CT accumulation in CAFs intensifies TGF-beta activity, leading to the production of multiple factors enhancing cancer aggressiveness. We establish periostin as a stromal marker of chemotherapeutic activity intrinsically upregulated in consensus molecular subtype 4 (CMS4) tumors and highly expressed before and/or after treatment in patients unresponsive to therapy. Collectively, our study underscores the ability of CT-retaining CAFs to support cancer progression and resistance to treatment.

This work is intended to provide a high-level assessment of energy solutions to power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The criteria for the evaluation are technical, environmental, and economic. Different technologies will be covered with support from published scientific research and the market existing solutions. The analysis will be done for a particular case study but the followed steps should serve for others looking to tackle the same issue. The intended outcome is a preselection of one or more alternatives to improve the power supply of the case study devices according to the mentioned criteria. The selection of alternatives will also include a guideline on which developments to follow and the main reasons to do so. The work is done from a business and practical perspective, meaning that after taking a first decision thanks to this work or the steps followed on it, the R&D departments of the ICT (Information and communications technologies) companies applying the methodology should then study the selected alternatives in a deeper technical analysis. In the conclusions, general next steps to carry out the development will be established. Throughout the work, it is demonstrated that there is not one single combination of technologies that is the best in all aspects, for all weathers and locations, and all applications. On the contrary, the assessment reveals how different devices and conditions affect the decision on which is the most suitable decision. In addition, there is not any alternative that has the best ranking in all aspects, as there are always technical, environmental and economical compromises. As for the specific assessment for the current status of RecySmart device (the first device of the case study), it is recommendable to follow the development towards solar photovoltaic panels in combination with Li-ion or LiPo rechargeable batteries to remove the current primary cells. I am proposing the qualitative shift to an emic way of thinking and analyzing Amazonia, that is to say adopting the indigenous way of knowing and co-existing with the forest as a living entity peopled by thinking and feeling entities with will, intentionality and teleological energy-synergy.

CRUE-CSIC (Acuerdos Transformativos 2022), Paranoid ideas are the most common abnormal beliefs in the schizophrenia spectrum, are also prevalent in nonclinical populations, and are highly correlated with other mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and low levels of well-being. Two previous studies with the same British population sample used confirmatory factor analysis and network analysis to show that the spectrum of paranoid beliefs is made up of four factors or dimensions (i.e., interpersonal sensitivity, mistrust, ideas of reference and ideas of persecution). The aims of this study are: 1) to explore the distribution and the structure of paranoid beliefs in a Spanish general population by applying the network approach and 2) to use network analysis to explore for the first time whether specific domains of paranoid ideation (i.e., dimensions) are specifically associated with mental health correlates such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and well-being. We found a continuous distribution of paranoid beliefs among the 1328 individuals constituting the sample (e.g., 29,2 % did not endorse any items, 4.6 % endorsed half of the items, while 0.8 % endorsed all paranoid items). Paranoid ideas form three dimensions; interpersonal sensitivity, mistrust, and ideas of persecution (ideas of reference did not form a separate factor). The network model showed that loneliness has a pivotal role in connecting paranoid ideation with general psychopathology measures (i.e., depression, anxiety, loneliness and well-being). Traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress are highly prevalent in people with psychosis, increasing symptom burden, decreasing quality of life and moderating treatment response. A range of post-traumatic sequelae have been found to mediate the relationship between trauma and psychotic experiences including the ‘traditional’ symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The International Classification of Diseases-11th Edition recognises a more complex post-traumatic presentation, complex PTSD (cPTSD), which captures both the characteristic symptoms of PTSD alongside more pervasive post-traumatic sequelae known as ‘disturbances in self-organisation’ (DSOs). The prevalence and impact of cPTSD and DSOs in psychosis remains to be explored. In the first study of this kind, 144 participants with psychosis recruited from North West United Kingdom mental health services completed measures assessing trauma, PTSD and cPTSD symptoms and symptoms of psychosis. Forty-per-cent of the sample met criteria for cPTSD, compared to 10% who met diagnostic criteria for PTSD. PTSD mediated the relationship between trauma and positive symptoms; DSOs did not contribute to explaining this relationship. Both PTSD and DSOs mediated the relationship between trauma and affective symptoms but did not explain a significant proportion of variance in negative symptoms. Cognitive and excitative symptoms of psychosis did not correlate with trauma, PTSD or DSO scores. This findings indicate the possible value of adjunct therapies to manage cPTSD symptoms in people with psychosis, pending replication in larger epidemiological samples and longitudinal studies.

In this work we calculate the pole-mass of the $\rho^0$ meson with different spin projections $s_z=0,\pm 1$ in the context of the magnetized two-flavor Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model. Making use of the mean field approximation to obtain the effective quark mass as a function of the magnetic field, we apply the random phase approximation (RPA) to the vector channel in order to calculate the polarization function for each spin component. We adopt the magnetic field independent regularization (MFIR) in our evaluations as a method of separating divergences and the Pauli-Villars regularization for the vacuum contributions. The $\rho^0$ meson mass with spin projection $s_z=1$ is always catalysed with the magnitude of the magnetic field, showing good agreement with Lattice QCD results. While there are some barriers to discussing trauma in clinical services, research has shown that disclosure is not only possible but also beneficial to both psychotic and traumatic symptoms. The current study is the first to evaluate service users’ perception of the influence of trauma on the development and maintenance of their psychotic symptoms, as well as their views on how their life and mental health have been affected by traumatic events and their disclosure (or lack of). Methods: Eleven participants with experiences of psychosis and trauma took part in semi-structured interviews. Results: Consistently with previous literature, our participants reported high rates of interpersonal trauma, but had rarely had the opportunity to discuss any of these events. Using thematic analysis, we identified three major themes that have important implications for healthcare: factors that facilitate or hinder talking about trauma; consequences of talking or not; and relationship between trauma and psychosis. Participants generally benefited from talking about trauma and concerningly often associated the prolonged lack of opportunities to discuss traumatic events with negative feelings towards the self and with a deterioration of their mental health. Participants also recognised direct links between past traumas and the content and characteristics of their psychotic experiences. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance, as perceived by service users, of discussing trauma and looking at psychosis through a “trauma lens”. These results stress the need to systematically assess trauma history and traumatic symptoms in psychosis and might potentially help to overcome clinicians’ worries about discussing trauma with service users. The prevalence and impact of cPTSD and DSOs in psychosis remains to be explored. In the first study of this kind, 144 participants with psychosis recruited from North West United Kingdom mental health services completed measures assessing trauma, PTSD and cPTSD symptoms and symptoms of psychosis. Forty-percent of the sample met criteria for cPTSD, compared to 10% who met diagnostic criteria for PTSD. PTSD and DSOs mediated the relationship between trauma and positive symptoms, controlling for dataset membership. Both PTSD and DSOs mediated the relationship between trauma and affective symptoms but did not explain a significant proportion of variance in negative symptoms. Cognitive and excitative symptoms of psychosis did not correlate with trauma, PTSD or DSO scores. These findings indicate the possible value of adjunct therapies to manage cPTSD symptoms in people with psychosis, pending replication in larger epidemiological samples and longitudinal studies.

In this work we calculate the pole-mass of the $\rho^0$ meson with different spin projections $s_z=0,\pm 1$ in the context of the magnetized two-flavor Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model. Making use of the mean field approximation to obtain the effective quark mass as a function of the magnetic field, we apply the random phase approximation (RPA) to the vector channel in order to calculate the polarization function for each spin component. We adopt the magnetic field independent regularization (MFIR) in our evaluations as a method of separating divergences and the Pauli-Villars regularization for the vacuum contributions. The $\rho^0$ meson mass with spin projection $s_z=\pm 1$ is always catalysed with the magnitude of the magnetic field, showing good agreement with Lattice QCD results. The mass projection $s_z=0$ has a non-monotonic behavior, decreasing until the minimum at $eB\lesssim 0.15$ GeV$^2$, which is in contrast with available LQCD data.

We study the applications of non-extensive Tsallis statistics to high energy and hadron physics. These applications include studies of $pp$ collisions, equation of state of QCD, as well as Bose-Einstein condensation. We also analyze the connections of Tsallis statistics with thermofractals, and address some of the conceptual aspects of the fractal approach, which are expressed in terms of the renormalization group equation and the self-energy corrections to the parton mass. This review assessed the evidence base for the cost-effectiveness of health and social care interventions for people at risk of psychosis and for first-episode psychosis. Methods Electronic searches were conducted using the PsycINFO, MEDLINE and Embase databases to identify relevant published full economic evaluations published before August 2020. Full-text English-language studies reporting a full economic evaluation of a health or social care intervention aiming to reduce or prevent symptoms in people at risk of psychosis or experiencing first-episode psychosis were included. Screening, data extraction, and critical appraisal were performed using pre-specified criteria and forms based on the NHS Economic Evaluation Database (EED) handbook and Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) checklist for economic evaluations. The protocol was registered on the PROSPERO database (CRD42018108226). Results were summarised qualitatively. Results Searching identified 1,628 citations (1,326 following the removal of duplications). After two stages of screening 14 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Interventions were varied and included multidisciplinary care, antipsychotic medication, psychological therapy, and assertive outreach. Evidence was limited in the at-risk group with only four identified studies, though all interventions were found to be cost-effective with a high probability (> 80%). BACKGROUND: Outcome measurement in bipolar disorder (BD) traditionally focused on clinical improvement without considering other domains. Improvement trajectories in clinical and social-functional domains are different and can simultaneously appear in one while not in other domains. Measuring personal recovery (PR) has become a priority internationally. This review explored the shift in research investigating operational recovery definitions and underpinning factors of recovery in BD over the past four decades. METHODS: Studies defining recovery domains (other than clinical recovery) in BD were systematically reviewed; operational recovery definitions and factors assessed in association with recovery were thematically categorised and integrated in a narrative synthesis. RESULTS: Thirty-three studies, comprising 3638 participants from 19 countries were included. Identified operational recovery definition themes included i) PR ii) social-functional (SFR), and iii) occupational-residential (ORR) recovery. Examined factors were grouped as demographic, clinical and psychosocial factors. Predominantly demographic factors were linked to ORR and clinical factors to SFR. Depressive symptomatology was the only clinical factor associated with PR. Research investigating psychosocial factors in PR is emerging and has showed that resilience and appraisals of mood seem to be associated with PR. LIMITATIONS: Studies not available in English or examining functioning without defining recovery were excluded. CONCLUSIONS: Earlier operational recovery definitions of ORR and SFR were often arbitrary and inconsistent, and predominantly focused on clinical and demographic underpinning factors. While research attempts to follow the significant policy shifts towards personalised care by measuring what matters to individuals and exploring broader underpinning psychosocial factors, it is still lagging behind.

In this work, we evaluated recombinant receptor binding domain (RBD)-based vaccine formulation prototypes with potential for further clinical development. We assessed different formulations containing RBD plus alum, AddaS03, AddaVax, or the combination of alum and U-Omp19: a novel Brucella spp. protease inhibitor vaccine adjuvant. Results show that the vaccine formulation composed of U-Omp19 and alum as adjuvants has a better performance: it significantly increased mucosal and systemic neutralizing antibodies in comparison to antigen plus alum, AddaVax, or AddaS03. Antibodies induced with the formulation containing U-Omp19 and alum not only increased their neutralization capacity against the ancestral virus but also cross-neutralized alpha, lambda, and gamma variants with similar potency. Furthermore, the addition of U-Omp19 to alum vaccine formulation increased the frequency of RBD-specific geminal center B cells and plasmablasts. Additionally, U-Omp19+alum formulation induced RBD-specific Th1 and CD8(+) T-cell responses in spleens and lungs. Aquaculture has been one of the fastest-growing food production systems sectors for over three decades. With its growth, the demand for alternative, cheaper and high-quality feed ingredients is also increasing. Innovation investments on providing new functional feed alternatives have yielded several viable alternative raw materials. Considering all the current feed ingredients, their circular adaption in the aquafeed manufacturing industry is clearly of the utmost importance to achieve sustainable aquaculture in the near future. The use of terrestrial plant materials and animal by-products predominantly used in aquafeed ingredients puts a heavily reliance on terrestrial agroecosystems, which also has its own sustainability concerns. Therefore, the aquafeed industry needs to progress with functional and sustainable alternative raw materials for feed that must be more resilient and consistent, considering a circular perspective. In this review, we assess the current trends in using various marine organisms, ranging from microorganisms (including fungi, thraustochytrids, microalgae and bacteria) to macroalgae and macroinvertebrates as viable biological feed resources. This review focuses on the trend of circular use of resources and the development of new value chains. In this, we present a perspective of promoting novel circular economy value chains that promote the re-use of biological resources as valuable feed ingredients. Thus, we highlight some potentially important marine-derived resources that deserve further investigations for improving or addressing circular aquaculture.

The ability of sixteen wood- and soil-inhabiting basidiomycete strains and four ascomycete strains to degrade the most hazardous, widespread, and persistent pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, oxyethylated nonylphenol, alkylphenol, anthraquinone-type synthetic dyes, and oil) was found. The disappearance of the pollutants, their main metabolites, and some adaptive properties (activities of ligninolytic enzymes, the production of emulsifying compounds and exopolysaccharides) were evaluated. The toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons decreased during degradation. New data were obtained regarding (1) the dependence of the completeness of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation on the composition of the ligninolytic enzyme complex; (2) the degradation of neonol AF9-12 by higher fungi (different accessibilities of the oxyethyl chain and the aromatic ring of the molecules to different fungal genera); and (3) the production of an emulsifying agent in response to the presence in the cultivation medium of hydrophobic pollutants as the common property of wood- and soil-inhabiting basidiomycetes and ascomycetes. Promise for use in mycoremediation was shown in the wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes Pleurotus ostreatus f. Florida, Schizophyllum commune, Trametes versicolor MUT 3403, and Trametes versicolor DSM11372; the litter-decomposing basidiomycete Stropharia rugosoannulata; and the ascomycete Cladosporium herbarum. These fungi degrade a wide range of pollutants without accumulation of toxic metabolites and produce ligninolytic enzymes and emulsifying compounds.

Traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress are highly prevalent in people with psychosis, increasing symptom burden, decreasing quality of life and moderating treatment response. A range of post-traumatic sequelae have been found to mediate the relationship between trauma and psychotic experiences, including the “traditional” symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The International Classification of Diseases-11th Edition recognizes a more complex post-traumatic presentation, complex PTSD (cPTSD), which captures both the characteristic symptoms of PTSD alongside more pervasive post-traumatic sequelae known as ‘disturbances in self-organization’ (DSOs). The prevalence and impact of cPTSD and DSOs in psychosis remains to be explored. In the first study of this kind, 144 participants with psychosis recruited from North West United Kingdom mental health services completed measures assessing trauma, PTSD and cPTSD symptoms and symptoms of psychosis. Forty-percent of the sample met criteria for cPTSD, compared to 10% who met diagnostic criteria for PTSD. PTSD and DSOs mediated the relationship between trauma and positive symptoms, controlling for dataset membership. Both PTSD and DSOs mediated the relationship between trauma and affective symptoms but did not explain a significant proportion of variance in negative symptoms. Cognitive and excitative symptoms of psychosis did not correlate with trauma, PTSD or DSO scores. These findings indicate the possible value of adjunct therapies to manage cPTSD symptoms in people with psychosis, pending replication in larger epidemiological samples and longitudinal studies.

While there are some barriers to discussing trauma in clinical services, research has shown that disclosure is not only possible but also beneficial to both psychotic and traumatic symptoms. The current study is the first to evaluate service users’ perception of the influence of trauma on the development and maintenance of their psychotic symptoms, as well as their views on how their life and mental health have been affected by traumatic events and their disclosure (or lack of). Methods: Eleven participants with experiences of psychosis and trauma took part in semi-structured interviews. Results: Consistently with previous literature, our participants reported high rates of interpersonal trauma, but had rarely had the opportunity to discuss any of these events. Using thematic analysis, we identified three major themes that have important implications for healthcare: factors that facilitate or hinder talking about trauma; consequences of talking or not; and relationship between trauma and psychosis. Participants generally benefited from talking about trauma and concerningly often associated the prolonged lack of opportunities to discuss traumatic events with negative feelings towards the self and with a deterioration of their mental health. Participants also recognised direct links between past traumas and the content and characteristics of their psychotic experiences. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance, as perceived by service users, of discussing trauma and looking at psychosis through a “trauma lens”. These results stress the need to systematically assess trauma history and traumatic symptoms in psychosis and might potentially help to overcome clinicians’ worries about discussing trauma with service users. In this work, we evaluated recombinant receptor binding domain (RBD)-based vaccine formulation prototypes with potential for further clinical development. We assessed different formulations containing RBD plus alum, AddaS03, AddaVax, or the combination of alum and U-Omp19: a novel Brucella spp. protease inhibitor vaccine adjuvant. Results show that the vaccine formulation composed of U-Omp19 and alum as adjuvants has a better performance: it significantly increased mucosal and systemic neutralizing antibodies in comparison to antigen plus alum, AddaVax, or AddaS03. Antibodies induced with the formulation containing U-Omp19 and alum not only increased their neutralization capacity against the ancestral virus but also cross-neutralized alpha, lambda, and gamma variants with similar potency. Furthermore, the addition of U-Omp19 to alum vaccine formulation increased the frequency of RBD-specific geminal center B cells and plasmablasts. Additionally, U-Omp19+alum formulation induced RBD-specific Th1 and CD8(+) T-cell responses in spleens and lungs. Finally, this vaccine formulation conferred protection against an intranasal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) challenge of K18-hACE2 mice.
