Numerical simulation applied to agriculture or wastewater treatment (WWT) is a complementary tool to understand, a priori, the impact of meteorological parameters on productivity under limiting environmental conditions or even to guide investments towards other more relevant circular economic objectives. This work proposes a new methodology to calculate Typical Meteorological Sequences (TMS) that could be used as input data to simulate the growth and productivity of photosynthetic organisms in different biological systems, such as a High-Rate Algae Pond (HRAP) for WWT or in agriculture for crops. The TMS was established by applying Finkelstein-Schafer statistics and represents the most likely meteorological sequence in the long term for each meteorological season. In our case study, 18 locations in the Madrid (Spain) region are estimated depending on climate conditions represented by solar irradiance and temperature. The parameters selected for generating TMS were photosynthetically active radiation, solar day length, maximum, minimum, mean, and temperature range. The selection of potential sequences according to the growth period of the organism is performed by resampling the available meteorological data, which, in this case study, increases the number of candidate sequences by 700%.

We propose a combined nodal integration and virtual element method for compressible and nearly incompressible elasticity, wherein the strain is averaged at the nodes from the strain of surrounding virtual elements. For the strain averaging procedure, a nodal averaging operator is constructed using a generalization to virtual elements of the node-based uniform strain approach for finite elements. We refer to the proposed technique as the node-based uniform strain virtual element method (NVEM). No additional degrees of freedom are introduced in this approach, thus resulting in a displacement-based formulation. A salient feature of the NVEM is that the stresses and strains become nodal variables just like displacements, which can be exploited in nonlinear simulations. Through several benchmark problems in compressible and nearly incompressible elasticity as well as in elastodynamics, we demonstrate that the NVEM is accurate, optimally convergent and devoid of volumetric locking.

This paper summarizes the development of Veamy, an object-oriented C++ library for the virtual element method (VEM) on general polygonal meshes, whose modular design is focused on its extensibility. The linear elastostatic and Poisson problems in two dimensions have been chosen as the starting stage for the development of this library. The theory of the VEM, upon which Veamy is built, is presented using a notation and a terminology that resemble the language of the finite element method (FEM) in engineering analysis. Several examples are provided to demonstrate the usage of Veamy, and in particular, one of them features the interaction between Veamy and the polygonal mesh generator PolyMesher. A computational performance comparison between VEM and FEM is also conducted. Veamy is free and open source software.

Biodiversity loss is one major outcome of human-mediated ecosystem disturbance. One way that humans have triggered wildlife declines is by transporting disease-causing agents to remote areas of the world. Amphibians have been hit particularly hard by disease due in part to a globally distributed pathogenic chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis [Bd]). Prior research has revealed important insights into the biology and distribution of Bd; however, there are still many outstanding questions in this system. Although we know that there are multiple divergent lineages of Bd that differ in pathogenicity, we know little about how these lineages are distributed around the world and where lineages may be coming into contact. Here, we implement a custom genotyping method for a global set of Bd samples. This method is optimized to amplify and sequence degraded DNA from noninvasive skin swab samples. We describe a divergent lineage of Bd, which we call BdASIA3, that appears to be widespread in Southeast Asia. This lineage co-occurs with the global panzootic lineage (BdGPL) in multiple localities. Additionally, we shed light on the global distribution of BdGPL and highlight the expanded range of another lineage, BdCAPE. Finally, we argue that more monitoring needs to take place where Bd lineages are coming into contact and where we know little about Bd lineage diversity. Monitoring need not use expensive or difficult field techniques but can use archived swab samples to further explore the history-and predict the future impacts-of this devastating pathogen.

In this paper, we present a novel nodal integration scheme for meshfree Galerkin methods that draws on the mathematical framework of the virtual element method. We adopt linear maximum-entropy basis functions for the discretization of field variables, although the proposed scheme is applicable to any linear meshfree approximant. In our approach, the weak form integrals are nodally integrated using nodal representative cells that carry the nodal displacements and state variables such as strains and stresses. The nodal integration is performed using the virtual element decomposition, wherein the bilinear form is decomposed into a consistency part and a stability part that ensure consistency and stability of the method. The performance of the proposed nodal integration scheme is assessed through benchmark problems in linear and nonlinear analyses of solids for small displacements and small-strain kinematics. Numerical results are presented for linear elastostatics and linear elastodynamics, and viscoelasticity. We demonstrate that the proposed nodally integrated meshfree method is accurate, converges optimally, and is more reliable and robust than a standard cell-based Gauss integrated meshfree method.

The present work is focused in the study of the bimetallic Cu–Co formulation combined with CeO2 as SOFC anode, at 750 °C, direct feed of methane and two different fuel mixtures that simulate biogas. Additionally, the sulphur tolerance of new anode material has been evaluated. Its single cell evaluation, based on a samaria doped ceria (SDC) solid electrolyte and a LSM perovskite cathode, together with the electrochemical characterisation and catalytic activity tests, have allowed to demonstrate the ability of this material to operate directly with simulated biogas mixtures without loss of single cell performance due to the formation of carbon deposits or sulphur anode poisoning. The activity of this material for the exothermic oxidation of methane reduces the energy requirement of the endothermic internal methane reforming process. The cobalt doping of basic copper–ceria formulation enhanced sulphur and carbon coking tolerance of the SOFC anode material.

It is not known whether the aging-related decrease in dopaminergic function leads to the aging-related higher vulnerability of dopaminergic neurons and risk for Parkinson's disease. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays a major role in the inflammatory response, neuronal oxidative stress, and dopaminergic vulnerability via type 1 (AT1) receptors. In the present study, we observed a counterregulatory interaction between dopamine and angiotensin receptors. We observed overexpression of AT1 receptors in the striatum and substantia nigra of young adult dopamine D1 and D2 receptor-deficient mice and young dopamine-depleted rats, together with compensatory overexpression of AT2 receptors or compensatory downregulation of angiotensinogen and/or angiotensin. In aged rats, we observed downregulation of dopamine and dopamine receptors and overexpression of AT1 receptors in aged rats, without compensatory changes observed in young animals. L-Dopa therapy inhibited RAS overactivity in young dopamine-depleted rats, but was ineffective in aged rats. The results suggest that dopamine may play an important role in modulating oxidative stress and inflammation in the substantia nigra and striatum via the RAS, which is impaired by aging. © 2014 Elsevier Inc.

The objective of this study is to describe body composition and somatotype of soccer players U18 category. Sample: The sample included 26 football players Under 18 category (17.4 ± 0.63 years, weight 68.91 ± 5.86 kg, height 171.10 ± 5.79 cm) belonging to Sports Club Ñublense Chillan city, classified by their position in the field of goalkeepers (POR) Defenses (DEF) midfielders (MED) and forwards (DEL). Methodology: The assessment of body composition used the formula Deborah Kerr (1988), splitting into 5 components (Fat Mass, Muscle Mass, Bone Mass, and Mass Residual Mass Skin) and for the calculation of the formula used somatotype Health & Carter (1990) determined the components Endomorphic, Mesomorphic and Ectomorphic that make somatotype, as recommended by the International Society of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). Results: In terms of body composition values were obtained from MA 21.87% - 48.15% MM - MO 11.39% - 12.93% MR - 5.63% MP. On the Heath-Carter somatotype was obtained through Somatotype (2.2-4.1-1.9), and their classification is Mesomorph Balanced. Conclusions: The study group expressed mesomorphy feature balanced, maintaining the normal trend, deviating only in the group of defenses (DEF) who showed an endo - mesomorphism, typical of the characteristics of the playing position., El objetivo del presente estudio es describir la Composición Corporal y Somatotipo de jugadores de fútbol categoría Sub 18. Muestra: Participaron 26 jugadores fútbol categoría Sub 18 (17,4 ± 0,63 años, peso de 68,91 ± 5,86 Kg, estatura 171,10 ± 5,79 cm), pertenecientes al Club Deportivo Ñublense de la ciudad de Chillan, clasificados por la posición que ocupan en el terreno de juego en Porteros (POR) Defensas (DEF) Mediocampistas (MED) y Delanteros (DEL). Metodología: La valoración de la composición corporal se utilizó la fórmula de Débora Kerr (1988), con fraccionamiento en 5 componentes (Masa Grasa; Masa Muscular, Masa Ósea, Masa Residual y Masa Piel) y para el cálculo del somatotipo se utilizó la fórmula de Heath & Carter (1990) determinado los componentes Endomórfico, Mesomórfico y Ectomórfico que conforman el somatotipo, siguiendo las recomendaciones de la sociedad internacional de Kineantropometría (ISAK). Resultados: En cuanto a la composición corporal se obtuvieron los valores medios de MA 21,87% - MM 48,15% - MO 11,39% - MR 12,93% - MP 5,63%. En cuanto al Somatotipo de Heath- Carter se obtuvo un Somatotipo medio de (2,2 - 4,1 - 1,9) y su clasificación es Mesomorfo Balanceado. Conclusiones: Acorde a los resultados se observa una clara tendencia al mesomorfismo balanceado, el cual responde a las características normales del morfotipo del futbolista profesional en diversos países, y en relación a su edad; no obstante ello se detecta una caída en los porcentajes de masa magra (MM), y una elevación de los porcentajes de masa adiposa (MA) que pueden determinar claras diferencias en el rendimiento respecto a las posiciones de juego en situaciones competitivas.

Perenniporia tepeitensis (basionym: Coriolus tepeitensis) is showed to belong to Perenniporiella, on the basis of both morphological and molecular data (DNA sequence data from the ribosomal LSU, ITS, and tef1). Hence, the new combination Perenniporiella tepeitensis is proposed. The species is redescribed on the basis of the type specimen and several original collections from eastern Mexico and USA. A key to Perenniporiella is proposed.

Diversos factores de riesgo han sido señalados en la aparición de psicopatología y evolución desfavorable en la epilepsia. Como tales se incluyen la edad de comienzo de la enfremedad, el tipo de crisis, la presencia simultánea de diversos tipos de crisis, el daño orgánico cerebral, el uso de fármacos con efectos laterales deletéreos, la presencia de crisis hereditarias de mal pronóstico, a los que deben agregarse los factores ambientales. La evaluación del desempeño psicosocial de los sujetos con epilepsia proporciona información acerca de la influencia de estos factores en la adaptación social de los individuos portadores de esta enfermedad. Con la finalidad de obtener un perfil en la adaptación al medio social de los consultantes en el nivel primario de atención de salud se aplicó a un grupo de ellos el Inventario Psicosocial de Crisis de Washington, test específicamente diseñado para sujetos con epilepsia. Los resultados obtenidos señalan una deficiente adaptación de estos pacientes, mostrando cifras similares con aquellos provenientes de otro servicio estatal como el Instituto Psiquiátrico de Santiago y con los pertenecientes a estratos socioeconómicos bajos. Esta última variable impresiona jugar un rol de relevancia en los sujetos portadores de epilepsia

An investigation of the frequency behavior of polycrystalline ferrites is presented. It is shown that the low frequency dispersion (f < 10 MHz) of permeability is associated with the bulging of pinned domain walls, and has a mixed resonance-relaxation character, closer to the latter. It is also shown that there is a linear relationship between the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant, K1, and the relaxation frequency. The slope of this correlation depends on the grain size. A fraction of the pulp fed into the hydrocyclone battery was recirculated into the ball mill, while secondary and tertiary crushing products were fed into the SAG mill. These procedures have given good results.

Roasting is currently the preferred route for removing arsenic impurity from copper concentrates, although hydrometallurgical processes such as alkaline leaching with Na2S may eventually constitute alternatives. In either case, selective flotation of the arsenical mineral from other sulphides is desirable to reduce the quantity of material to be treated by these methods. It was found that when samples were treated with 100 g/t NaClO for 10 mins before the flotation stage, enargite (Cu3AsS4) could be selectively separated from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2): more than 80% of the enargite was recovered, compared with around 40% of the chalcopyrite. Good separation was also achieved when the NaClO was added directly to the flotation cell in a sufficient amount to obtain a redox potential in the range -50 to +50 mV and the flotation was carried out in an aerated system. When conditioning and flotation were carried out in an inert atmosphere (N2) the range of potentials at which selective separation was observed was much greater.
