The experience of heritage sites through digital technology is an increasingly important topic for researchers and practitioners. Drawing upon telepresence theory, this study explores how a visitor's destination image is formed and its impact on satisfaction in a virtual heritage site experience. The survey results show that telepresence, cognitive image, affective image, and satisfaction are positively correlated. Furthermore, the relationship between telepresence and satisfaction was mediated by the destination image in the virtual heritage site experience. This research extends telepresence theory by testing its impact on destination image in a virtual tourism experience as well as providing some meaningful practical insights for heritage site marketing managers on virtual heritage experiences.

Global scientific exchange has been profoundly perturbed by the COVID-19 pandemic, altering user travel behaviours and accelerating the use of remote access. Combined with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), these trends together can change how large-scale user scientific facilities are used by the community and managed by operators.

Grounded in the social cognitive theory, the main aim of this study is to explore the impact of telepresence, social presence, and emotional engagement on impulsive buying tendencies within the realm of travel live-streaming (TLS). To examine further, the moderating effect of guidance shopping was included. An online questionnaire was distributed to 332 live-streaming viewers from China, and the collected data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that telepresence and social presence exert significant influences on emotional engagement and impulsive buying tendencies. Notably, the study identifies the mediating effect of emotional engagement and the moderating effect of guidance shopping. In practice, this research highlights the importance of streamers leveraging TLS platform functionalities to amplify the sense of "presence" and cultivate stronger emotional connections with viewers, thereby stimulating impulse buying. Additionally, streamers are encouraged to guide viewers in their decision-making process, addressing concerns to elevate engagement levels., Bibliografiskt granskad

The automotive industry has seen an uprise in autonomous vehicles that will change the operators’ work environment. Volvo Autonomous Solutions aims to create a seamless user experience with environmentally and socially sustainable solutions. The vehicles should operate fully autonomously, but scenarios will emerge where remote operation is required. The master thesis aims to identify the requirements for the interaction between human and autonomous vehicles, and develop an interaction solution for remote operation. The study focused on safety, perception, situation awareness, and user experience. The subject was analyzed using user studies, literature reviews, and benchmarking. Twenty people participated in interviews, and a key user was identified, together with four human intervention scenarios. The data resulted in a list of general insights, which developed into requirements for designing remote operation interactions. An exploration of solutions for human-machine interaction was iterated and evaluated by 31 participants. The final recommendation included a requirements list for the design of the interaction with remote operation and a proposed interaction concept, illustrating a design proposal to meet these requirements. The study identified the following aspects to consider when developing an interaction solution for remote control of autonomous vehicles: Navigation, Steering, and Acceleration, Safety, and Perception and Situation Awareness. This paper describes a mixed reality (MR) telepresence system for a ride to provide users with a highly realistic sensation. To make a realistic scene in a virtual environment, it is necessary to combine visual information with a reproduction of the forces which a user experiences in the real environment. This paper proposes an MR telepresence system that presents a realistic image and an inertial force sensation using an immersive display and a motion base with limited degrees of freedom. In our approach, the realistic image is acquired with an omnidirectional camera and the inertial force is generated virtually by a combination of the acceleration of gravity and a video effect. This paper describes a method for acquiring full spherical high dynamic range (HDR) images with no missing areas by using two omni directional cameras mounted on the top and bottom of an unmanned airship. The full spherical HDR images are generated by combining multiple omni directional images that are captured with different shutter speeds. In recent years, everyday activities such as work and socialization have steadily shifted to more remote and virtual settings. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the switch from physical to virtual has been accelerated, which has substantially affected almost all aspects of our lives, including business, education, commerce, healthcare, and personal life. This rapid and large-scale switch from in-person to remote interactions has exacerbated the fact that our current technologies lack functionality and are limited in their ability to recreate interpersonal interactions. To help address these limitations in the future, we introduce “Telelife,” a vision for the near and far future that depicts the potential means to improve remote living and better align it with how we interact, live and work in the physical world. Telelife encompasses novel synergies of technologies and concepts such as digital twins, virtual/physical rapid prototyping, and attention and context-aware user interfaces with innovative hardware that can support ultrarealistic graphics and haptic feedback, user state detection, and more. These ideas will guide the transformation of our daily lives and routines soon, targeting the year 2035. In addition, we identify opportunities across high-impact applications in domains related to this vision of Telelife. Along with a recent survey of relevant fields such as human-computer interaction, pervasive computing, and virtual reality, we provide a meta-synthesis in this paper that will guide future research on remote living.

Technology that enables users to experience a remote site virtually is called telepresence. A telepresence system using real environment images is expected to be used in the field of entertainment, medicine, education and so on. This paper describes a novel telepresence system which enables users to walk through a photorealistic virtualized environment by actual walking. To realize such a system, a wide-angle high-resolution movie is projected on an immersive multi-screen display to present users the virtualized environments and a treadmill is controlled according to detected user's locomotion. Telepresence systems using an omnidirectional image sensor enable us to experience remote sites with rich sensation. An omnidirectional multi-camera system is more useful for acquiring high-resolution omnidirectional images of outdoor scenes than a monocular camera system. However, exact calibration of the camera system is necessary to generate a panoramic movie. In this paper, we describe a panoramic movie generation method based on geometric and photometric calibration of the omnidirectional multi-camera system. A prototype of a telepresence system is also shown as applications of generated panoramic movies. The interactive walkthrough which enables us to look around a virtualized real world has been widely investigated. The walkthrough system can be applied to simulation, telepresence, and so on. The paper describes a method of interactive walkthrough which takes a real scene and enables us to look around in the virtualized scene. Our method is based on acquiring omnidirectional images at multiple points in the real world by using an omnidirectional camera. The method generates an omnidirectional image at an arbitrary location from captured omnidirectional images, and presents a user a converted view-dependent perspective image. Current video conferencing tools lack a sense of presence. Telepresence can improve the current video conferencing by providing feeling of presence at a different location from remote location. Most recent telepresence systems are built with the devices that are not accessible and uncomfortable for the daily meeting purpose. This work proposes a framework for embodied telepresence system that suits a daily meeting case the best. Based on our new telepresence framework, a new system architecture and design requirements are constructed. The system architecture shows how the telepresence system needs to be structured, and a design requirement helps to understand the needs of the system. With this framework we were able to implement a user friendly and accessible telepresence system. Our telepresence system enables users to control the telepresence robot with smartphone controller. The controller has four features: (1) Smartphone orientation control, (2) Position save and playback, (3) Local smart light bulb control, and (4) visual cue. At the end, our work evaluates the developed telepresence system by measuring the performances of given tasks to the participants. The evaluation shows that our system provides a sense of presence to both remote and local users. However, the proposed telepresence framework and system requires farther improvements to provide better usability.

This study investigates how virtual reality (VR) can enhance telepresence and stimulate VR use and travel intentions in the sustainable tourism industry. 512 local and international tourists in Vietnam participated in an online survey after experiencing a VR experiment. They interacted with an app presenting a sustainable tourist destination based on nature, with the treatment group using VR sets and the control group viewing it on a 2D screen. Results indicate that VR-based tours facilitate greater telepresence than 2D presentations. VR is not a substitute for actual travel, with higher intentions reported to use VR in the future and to visit the tourist destination in real life due to their greater telepresence and perceived enjoyment from VR. This has implications for nature-based sustainable tourism, with further research needed for other types of tourism, including extreme activities.

With the popularization of the concept of the metaverse, non-immersive virtual reality (VR) has become a focus of tourism destination marketing. Drawing upon telepresence theory, this study identifies the antecedents and consequences of telepresence to help interpret tourist behavior in the context of non-immersive VR experience. Results revealed that mental imagery and vividness positively predict tourist telepresence and satisfaction; Telepresence positively predicts satisfaction and intention during non-immersive VR experiences. Our work enriches telepresence theory by identifying the antecedents and consequences of telepresence in the context of non-immersive VR, and provides meaningful practical insights for similar attractions that adopt the technology.

This study aimed to assess the use of virtual reality (VR) as a tool for destination marketing of sustainable tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 249 students, who were shown a video about low-impact tourism in Vietnam using one of the two media types, namely VR and on-screen 2D. A structural model was proposed based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and was estimated using the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach. The results provide evidence for VR to have a positive effect on travel intention through both higher perceived enjoyment and higher environmental involvement. However, these effects were observed to be not as significant when considering travel intention during the pandemic. While stronger telepresence achieved by VR may encourage users to engage in more sustainable behaviour and improve enjoyment from the experience, the avoidance to travel stemming from health and safety concerns amidst the pandemic greatly offset the effectiveness of VR as a marketing tool. The results highlight the importance of considering individual-level preferences in tourism.

Existing challenges in surgical education (See one, do one, teach one) as well as the COVID-19 pandemic make it necessary to develop new ways for surgical training. Therefore, this work describes the implementation of a scalable remote solution called “TeleSTAR” using immersive, interactive and augmented reality elements which enhances surgical training in the operating room. The system uses a full digital surgical microscope in the context of Ear–Nose–Throat surgery. The microscope is equipped with a modular software augmented reality interface consisting an interactive annotation mode to mark anatomical landmarks using a touch device, an experimental intraoperative image-based stereo-spectral algorithm unit to measure anatomical details and highlight tissue characteristics. The new educational tool was evaluated and tested during the broadcast of three live XR-based three-dimensional cochlear implant surgeries. The system was able to scale to five different remote locations in parallel with low latency and offering a separate two-dimensional YouTube stream with a higher latency. This paper aims to identify the development of metacognitive processes in different educational scenery based on the use of the Hologram. Hologram. In order to guide readers, we will start from the definition of Hologram and metacognition, which have been used in different educational scenarios, and we will present the proposal for integration as a teaching – learning strategy. This article aims to make use of the hologram as a strategy to develop’ metacognitive processes with the purpose of linking learning from an innovative vision where the student, regardless of the context where he is located, can access his educational process guaranteeing coverage, quality and avoid school dropouts. As teachers interested in the acquisition of quality knowledge and the cognitive development of students, we consider that our proposal goes beyond the limits of the classroom, generating in the student the development of autonomous learning, which results in responsibility, commitment and, in general, intellectual enrichment and personal knowledge of students in any scenario, making them managers of their own learning. Therefore, throughout the document we will allow ourselves to develop examples contextualized in the school classroom that serve as a model for teachers and students in general. This article is divided into three parts that are presented as follows: initially a brief introduction to the definition of metacognition with the purpose of clarifying and justifying our proposal, secondly the role that the teacher plays as a promoter of the Hologram in an innovative scenario and a brief state of the art of some proposals in this regard and finally the role that the student will play as a manager of his cognitive process in relation to the development of faily activities towards meaningful learning., El presente artículo tiene como propósito identificar el desarrollo de procesos metacognitivos en diversos escenarios educativos a partir del uso del Holograma – Telepresencia. Con el propósito de orientar a los lectores partiremos de la definición de Holograma y metacognición, los cuales han sido utilizados en diferentes escenarios educativos y presentaremos la propuesta de integración como estrategia de enseñanza – aprendizaje con el propósito de hacer uso del holograma – Telepresencia como estrategia para desarrollar procesos metacognitivos para vincular el aprendizaje desde una visión innovadora donde el estudiante sin importar el contexto en el que se encuentra pueda acceder a su proceso educativo garantizando cobertura, calidad y evitando la deserción. Como docentes interesados en la adquisición del conocimiento de calidad y del desarrollo cognitivo de los estudiantes consideramos que nuestra propuesta traspasa los límites del aula generando en el estudiante el desarrollo de aprendizaje autónomo, el cual revierte en la responsabilidad, compromiso y en general el enriquecimiento intelectual y personal de los estudiantes en cualquier escenario, convirtiéndolo en gestor de su propio aprendizaje. Por tanto, a lo largo del documento nos permitimos presentar el tema como modelo para docentes y estudiantes en general. El artículo está dividido en tres partes que se presentan de la siguiente manera: inicialmente una breve introducción a la definición de metacognición con el propósito de aclarar y justificar nuestra propuesta, en segundo lugar el rol que juega el maestro como dinamizador de la propuesta Holograma - telepresencia en un escenario innovador y por último el rol que desempeñará el estudiante como gestor de su proceso cognitivo en relación con el desarrollo de actividades cotidianas hacia el aprendizaje significativo.

Sailing on scientific expeditions as an early career researcher (ECR) offers the beneficial opportunity to gain field experience and training. However, the number of available berths to achieve the scientific goals of an expedition limits the number of onboard participants. Telepresence and remote learning can be utilized to increase the number of active participants, broadening the reach of capacity development. The 2021 iMirabilis2 expedition on board the Spanish Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa used telepresence to virtually involve ECRs from several countries in deep-sea science. One year post-expedition, a survey of onshore participants was conducted to assess and quantify the effectiveness of the peer-to-peer ECR ship-to-shore scheme. During the expedition, live, interactive training via WhatsApp and Zoom was utilized by onshore ECRs more than traditional static, unidirectional methods of blog posts and pre-recorded videos. All respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the scheme provided an inclusive and accessible platform to share deep-sea science. These results suggest similar schemes could be used to supplement shorter-duration at-sea-training, used prior to a seagoing experience to better prepare ECRs, or to allow members of the science community unable to join an expedition in person to actively participate remotely, increasing inclusivity.

Con el propósito de orientar a los lectores partiremos de la definición de Holograma y metacognición, los cuales han sido utilizados en diferentes escenarios educativos y presentaremos la propuesta de integración como estrategia de enseñanza – aprendizaje con el propósito de hacer uso del holograma – Telepresencia como estrategia para desarrollar procesos metacognitivos para vincular el aprendizaje desde una visión innovadora donde el estudiante sin importar el contexto en el que se encuentra pueda acceder a su proceso educativo garantizando cobertura, calidad y evitando la deserción. Como docentes interesados en la adquisición del conocimiento de calidad y del desarrollo cognitivo de los estudiantes consideramos que nuestra propuesta traspasa los límites del aula generando en el estudiante el desarrollo de aprendizaje autónomo, el cual revierte en la responsabilidad, compromiso y en general el enriquecimiento intelectual y personal de los estudiantes en cualquier escenario, convirtiéndolo en gestor de su propio aprendizaje. Por tanto, a lo largo del documento nos permitimos presentar el tema como modelo para docentes y estudiantes en general. El artículo está dividido en tres partes que se presentan de la siguiente manera: inicialmente una breve introducción a la definición de metacognición con el propósito de aclarar y justificar nuestra propuesta, en segundo lugar el rol que juega el maestro como dinamizador de la propuesta Holograma - telepresencia en un escenario innovador y por último el rol que desempeñará el estudiante como gestor de su proceso cognitivo en relación con el desarrollo de actividades cotidianas hacia el aprendizaje significativo.

Introduction: While online consultations have shown promise to be a means for the effective delivery of high-quality mental healthcare and the first implementations of these digital therapeutic contacts go back nearly two decades, uptake has remained limited over the years. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered this relative standstill and created a unique turning point, with a massive amount of both professionals and clients having first hands-on experiences with technology in mental healthcare. Objective: The current study aimed to document the uptake of online consultations and explore if specific characteristics of mental health professionals across and beyond Europe could predict this. Methods: An international survey was designed to assess mental health professionals' (initial) experiences with online consultations at the onset of the pandemic: their willingness to make use of them and their prior and current experiences, alongside several personal characteristics. Logistic mixed-effects models were used to identify predictors of the use of online consultations, personal experience with this modality, and the sense of telepresence. Results: A total of 9115 healthcare professionals from 73 countries participated of which about two-thirds used online consultations during the initial COVID-19 outbreak. The current study identifies multiple determinants relating to the use and experience of online consultations, including the professionals' age, experience with the technology before the outbreak, the professional context, and training. Conclusions: Despite strong evidence supporting the relevance of training in digital mental health, this is clearly still lacking. Nevertheless, the COVID-19 pandemic presented a first, and potentially transformative, experience with online consultations for many healthcare professionals. Two common problems in Remote Guidance applications include the remote guides lack of direct control over their view into the worker’s physical environment and the difficulties that arise with trying to place virtual 3D objects in a real 3D environment,via a moving, shaky, 2D image.The first issue can be called a lack of remote spatial awareness, the guide can see only what the worker enables them to see. In the worst case the guide is rendered blind to the task environment while the worker is unable to use their device. A common occurrence is tasks that require both hands.The second issue arises from the inherent difficulty present in trying to correctly place a 3D object using only a limited perspective. Camera shake and unreliable tracking of the physical environment being depicted only further add to this problem. Studies show that 3D annotations make for much more effective means of communication, especially in 3D task environments. Allowing the guide some measure of control over their own view has also been shown to improve the guides ability to aid their partner. This paper investigates a method of Remote Guidance where the task of environment tracking and object placement are separated. A prototype application is developed and tested against a baseline 2D-annotation Remote Guidance tool. The study finds the prototype to be an effective way of placing virtual 3D objects in a remote environment. Experimental results show that communication is indeed made better by the inclusion of 3D objects into Remote Guidance. This comes at the cost of a slight increase in the timetaken to complete a task as the complexity of the 3D tool is greater than the 2D one. Unfortunately, the experiment performed fails to properly account for remote spatial awareness.

However, cameras don’t provide depth perceptionfor the operator, and the lighting conditions in a mine may make photogrammetry a lessthan ideal solution. Epiroc is currently working on a digital twin simulation softwarein Unity, which could be extended for teleoperation purposes. As a complement to thissoftware, a fast, high-definition Ouster OS0-128 LiDAR was used to render a point cloudof a physical environment. A Unity GameObject script was written in C# that receivesand renders coordinates as a point cloud. Two Python scripts were written to convert theLiDAR data using the Ouster SDK to coordinates, and then sending these coordinates overa TCP connection, either on the same machine, or over Wi-Fi. The Python scripts used twodifferent data formats, and the performance difference between these two data formatswas compared. The results indicated that Wi-Fi transfer of LiDAR data could be a viablesolution to continously scanning the surrounding area of equipment being teleoperatedwith quite a low delay and latency

Spatial Computing interfaces such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) have become promising modalities for next-generation computing platforms. Along with its potential impact on various technological applications, spatial computing comes with spatial limitations itself. Such experiences are physically constrained by the geometry and semantics of the local user's environment where existing physical elements are present. Unlike 2D screens, where a rectangular screen region can host digital content with possible overlay, 3D environments are occupied with diverse physical obstacles and functional constraints. This results in complex and, many times, non-convex activity spaces available for virtual content augmentation. Target environments are not necessarily known to content developers, and hence the ability to deploy large-scale curated experiences that can adapt to a diverse set of user spaces is challenging. This limitation is elevated in remote telepresence scenarios, where identifying a common ground physically accessible for all participants can become difficult, especially if users are unaware of the spatial layout of other participants' physical environments.Motivated by these spatial challenges, this dissertation works towards developing context-aware generative frameworks which enable large-scale deployment of adaptable spatial computing experiences for everyday users in diverse target environments. By introducing novel workflows to learn from examples as priors and utilizing spatial optimization methods, the systems developed in this dissertation address the spatial challenges in spatial computing in various applications of remote workplaces, multi-user telepresence, and curated experiences such as games and education. We propose unwinding the rotations experienced by the user of an immersive telepresence robot to improve comfort and reduce VR sickness of the user. By immersive telepresence we refer to a situation where a 360° camera on top of a mobile robot is streaming video and audio into a head-mounted display worn by a remote user possibly far away. Thus, it enables the user to be present at the robot’s location, look around by turning the head and communicate with people near the robot. By unwinding the rotations of the camera frame, the user’s viewpoint is not changed when the robot rotates. The user can change her viewpoint only by physically rotating in her local setting; as visual rotation without the corresponding vestibular stimulation is a major source of VR sickness, physical rotation by the user is expected to reduce VR sickness. We implemented unwinding the rotations for a simulated robot traversing a virtual environment and ran a user study (N=34) comparing unwinding rotations to user’s viewpoint turning when the robot turns. Our results show that the users found unwound rotations more preferable and comfortable and that it reduced their level of VR sickness. We also present further results about the users’ path integration capabilities, viewing directions, and subjective observations of the robot’s speed and distances to simulated people and objects.

We propose augmenting immersive telepresence by adding a virtual body, representing the user’s own arm motions, as realized through a head-mounted display and a 360-degree camera. Previous research has shown the effectiveness of having a virtual body in simulated environments; however, research on whether seeing one’s own virtual arms increases presence or preference for the user in an immersive telepresence setup is limited. We conducted a study where a host introduced a research lab while participants wore a head-mounted display which allowed them to be telepresent at the host’s physical location via a 360-degree camera, either with or without a virtual body. We first conducted a pilot study of 20 participants, followed by a pre-registered 62 participant confirmatory study. Whereas the pilot study showed greater presence and preference when the virtual body was present, the confirmatory study failed to replicate these results, with only behavioral measures suggesting an increase in presence. After analyzing the qualitative data and modeling interactions, we suspect that the quality and style of the virtual arms, and the contrast between animation and video, led to individual differences in reactions to the virtual body which subsequently moderated feelings of presence.

Higher education is facing a methodological update due to the changes caused by the health crisis generated by the virus responsible for COVID-19; consequently, the Division of Education for Work at Universidad Nacional seeks to analyze the context and the pedagogical mediation arising since 2020 from the student and teacher perspective. Three core elements are analyzed within the framework of a naturalistic paradigm from an exploratory methodology to identify the advantages and disadvantages of working in a remote face-to-face modality, as well as the possible adjustments to be made in an eventual face-to-face return and the modality preference of the participants in this training process. Regarding these three main results, advantages are highlighted, indicated by both the students and the teaching staff, which are presented at a personal, family, economic, quality of life, and health level, in addition to academic aspects, such as the development of skills, capacities for professional life and for the continuity of vocational projects, among others. The disadvantages refer to household activities, multitasking, ergonomic conditions, social interaction, and connectivity. In addition, within the eventual adjustments, we have: working conditions, the ability to adapt to change, scheduled organization, and the economic situation. The study concludes that the impact of the virus responsible for Covid-19, in the medium-to-long term, in university life is inevitable, and its scope will affect the institutional organization, teaching practices, and bonding between the ones involved., O ensino universitário enfrenta uma atualização metodológica devido às mudanças provocadas pela crise sanitária gerada pelo vírus responsável pelo COVID-19, por isso a Divisão de Educação para o Trabalho da Universidade Nacional procura realizar uma análise contextual e pedagógica do tipo de mediação que surge a partir de 2020 na perspectiva do aluno e do professor. Três elementos centrais foram analisados sob um paradigma naturalístico e a partir de uma metodologia exploratória, para identificar as vantagens e desvantagens de se trabalhar na modalidade presencial remota, bem como os possíveis ajustes a serem feitos em uma eventual volta ao presencial e a preferência de modalidade das pessoas participantes neste processo formativo. Em relação a esses três resultados centrais, destacam-se vantagens, apontadas tanto pelo corpo discente quanto pelo corpo docente, que se apresentam ao nível pessoal, familiar, econômico, de qualidade de vida e de saúde, além de aspectos acadêmicos, como o desenvolvimento de aptidões e capacidades para a vida profissional e para a continuidade de projetos profissionais, entre outros. As desvantagens referem-se a atividades domésticas, multitasking, condições ergonômicas, interação social e conectividade. Além disso, entre os eventuais ajustes mencionados estão as condições de trabalho, a capacidade de adaptação às mudanças, a organização dos horários e a condição econômica. O estudo conclui que o impacto do vírus responsável pela Covid-19, em médio e longo prazo, na vida universitária é inevitável e sua abrangência afetará a organização institucional, a oferta de ensino e os laços relacionais de seus membros., La educación universitaria se enfrenta a una actualización metodológica ante los cambios suscita-dos por la crisis sanitaria generada por el virus responsable de la COVID-19, por tal razón desde la División de Educación para el Trabajo en la Universidad Nacional, se busca realizar un análisis del contexto y la mediación pedagógica suscitada a partir del 2020 y desde la perspectiva estudiantil y docente. Se analizan tres elementos medulares en el marco de un paradigma naturalista desde una metodología exploratoria, para identificar las ventajas y desventajas del trabajo en modalidad presencial remota, así como los posibles ajustes por realizarse en un eventual retorno presencial y la preferencia de modalidad de las personas participantes en este proceso de formación. Respecto a estos tres principales resultados se destacan ventajas señaladas tanto por el estudian-tado como por el personal docente, las cuales se presentan a nivel personal, familiar, económico, de calidad de vida y salud, además de aspectos académicos, tal como el desarrollo de habilidades y capacidades para la vida profesional y para la continuidad de proyectos vocacionales, entre otros. The metaverse can be imagined as the immersive sequel to today's text-and-picture-based Internet where users stare at a screen, ignoring physical reality. Instead, by taking advantage of advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, AR, VR, and ever-increasing connectivity (like 5G networks), the metaverse promises online experiences that are more immersive and interactive than those of the past, a seamless merging of the physical and digital worlds. This improved relationship bodes particularly well for the role that technology can play in both physical and behavioral healthcare. Specifically, the metaverse has the potential to impact healthcare because of the convergence of three current major technological trends: (a) telepresence, (b) digital twinning, and (c) blockchain. These three concepts could come together to create entirely new means for delivering care, potentially lowering costs and vastly improving patient outcomes. Finally, while innovations in digital healthcare are to be commended for granting easier access to care for a wider range of people, it is important to consider the ethical matters that come along with them. Pervasive societal issues like discrimination, privacy violation, lack of transparency, and public safety do not disappear just because treatment has gone virtual.

Existing challenges in surgical education (See one, do one, teach one) as well as the Covid-19 pandemic make it necessary to develop new ways for surgical training. This is also crucial for the dissemination of new technological developments. As today's live transmissions of surgeries to remote locations always come with high information loss, e.g. stereoscopic depth perception, and limited communication channels. This work describes the implementation of a scalable remote solution for surgical training, called TeleSTAR (Telepresence for Surgical Assistance and Training using Augmented Reality), using immersive, interactive and augmented reality elements with a bi-lateral audio pipeline to foster direct communication. The system uses a full digital surgical microscope with a modular software-based AR interface, which consists of an interactive annotation mode to mark anatomical landmarks using an integrated touch panel as well as an intraoperative image-based stereo-spectral algorithm unit to measure anatomical details and highlight tissue characteristics.We broadcasted three cochlea implant surgeries in the context of otorhinolaryngology. The intervention scaled to five different remote locations in Germany and the Netherlands with lowlatency. In total, more than 150 persons could be reached and included an evaluation of a participant's questionnaire indicating that annotated AR-based 3D live transmissions add an extra level of surgical transparency and improve the learning outcome., Medical Instruments & Bio-Inspired Technology

This paper introduces a method for gesture-based teleoperation where the human operator can virtually exist within the remote environment using mixed reality. The proposed method visually mixes the operator’s body with their perception of the remote environment, so that the operator is virtually present at the remote site. The idea is the that operator can interact with a remote task directly using their own body while relying on the motion-mimicking of the telemanipulator, rather than having to control the telemanipulator based on visual feedback to execute the task indirectly. This study aims to find out whether the direct coupling of the situated condition has a positive effect on task performance compared to a control condition where the operator perceives themselves and the remote environment separately. A prototype of a gesture-based master-slave teleoperation system was developed[1] using a two-dimensional camera feed of the remote environment¬¬. A human subject study was carried out where 26 novice participants executed a self-paced reactionary task in two dimensions, where they had to balance completion time with error rate. The task consisted of hitting a randomly spawning target 90 times by reaching out and coming back to the starting position. During the experiment, motion input was recorded along with timestamps of the spawns and the successful hits. The results showed an 8.4% faster completion time, a 16.7 % higher maximum input velocity, and a 44.2% lower error rate for the situated condition versus the separated condition. This paper illustrates design work carried out to develop an interactive theater performance. HCI has started to address the challenges of designing interactive performances, as both audience and performers’ experiences are considered and a variety of professional expertise involved. Nevertheless, research has overlooked how such design unfolds in practice, and what role artists play in exploring both the creative opportunities and the challenges associated with interweaving digital technologies. A two-day workshop was conducted to tailor the use of the ChameleonMask, a telepresence technology, within a performance. The analysis highlights the artists’ work to make the mask work while framing, exploring and conceptualizing its use. The discussion outlines the artists’ skills and design expertise, and how they redefine the role of HCI in performance-led research.

Affective computing is an essential part of Human-Robot Interaction, where knowing the human’s emotional state is crucial to create an interactive and adaptive social robot. Previous work has mainly been focusing on using unimodal or multimodal sequential models for Affective State Recognition. However, few have included context-based information with their models to boost performance. In this paper, context-based features are tested on a multimodal Gated Recurrent Unit model with late fusion on game oriented data. It shows that using context-based features such as game state can significantly increase the performance of sequential multimodal models on game oriented data., Affektiv beräkning är en viktig del av interaktion mellan människa och robot, där kunskap om människans emotionella tillstånd är avgörande för att skapa en interaktiv och anpassningsbar social robot. Tidigare arbete har främst fokuserat på att använda unimodala eller multimodala sekventiella modeller för affektiv tillståndsigenkänning. Men få har inkluderat kontextbaserad information i sin inställning för att öka prestanda. I denna uppsats testas kontextbaserade funktioner på en multimodal s.k. Gated Recurrent Unit modell med sen fusion på spelorienterad data. Det visar att användning av kontextbaserade information som tillståndet i spelet kan avsevärt öka prestandan hos sekventiella multimodala modeller på spelorienterad data.

Inledning: Även om distansterapi visat sig vara effektivt och ger ökad tillgänglighet är många terapeuter ändå tveksamma till formatet. Syfte: Genom att undersöka hur övergången till distansformat enligt psykodynamiskt orienterade terapeuter påverkar den terapeutiska processen, dess ram och relationella kvalité ges ett bidrag till förståelse av denna tvekan. Metod: En kvalitativt inriktad fenomenologisk studie av semistrukturerade intervjuer med fem terapeuter. Resultat: Tematisk analys visar två teman: Närvaro och En ny situation med två respektive fyra underteman: möjliggörande och saknad respektive kropparnas kommunikation, saknad avgränsning, ramarbete och inre upptagenhet. Diskussion: En inre upptagenhet kan göra att närvaro som relationell kvalité i bemärkelsen emotionell, kognitiv och funktionell tillgänglighet försvåras i distansformatet. Inre upptagenhet kan bero på de ramfrågor som aktualiseras i övergången. Undersökningen resulterar i en modell som visar att i den mån en viss terapeutisk teknik, känsla i rummet eller terapeutroll föreligger som målsättning i den terapeutiska processen kommer den inre upptagenheten sannolikt kvarstå. Ökad förståelse för terapeuters målsättningar i och med den terapeutiska processen föreslås som en nyckel för vidare acceptans av distansformatet., Introduction: Even though distance therapy has been shown to be effective across a range of measures and increases access many psychotherapists still remain sceptic to the format. Aim: By examining how psychodynamic psychotherapists experience transitioning to distance therapy as regards the therapeutic process this study results in a contribution to the understanding of the continuing scepticism among therapists. Method: A qualitative, phenomenological study of semi-structured interviews with five psychotherapists using thematic analysis. Result: Two themes are identified: Presence and A new situation with two and four subthemes respectively: enabling and lamented; bodily communication, demarcation, therapeutic frame and preoccupation. Discussion: Due to preoccupation presence understood as a relational quality of emotional, cognitive and functional availability could be continually lamented in distance therapy. The discussion results in a model showing that if a certain therapeutic technique, feeling in the room or therapeutic role is an underlying intention in the therapeutic process preoccupation will continue to be a factor in distance therapy encounters. Increased knowledge as regards therapists´ intentions in the therapeutic process is forwarded as a key factor to further acceptance of the distance therapy format.

Together with Tilburg University and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, we investigated if and how telepresence robots affect between-student cooperation. Telepresence robots are robots that absent students can communicate through in the classroom.

In this paper, we analyze how different path aspects affect a user’s experience, mainly VR sickness and overall comfort, while immersed in an autonomously moving telepresence robot through a virtual reality headset. In particular, we focus on how the robot turns and the distance it keeps from objects, with the goal of planning suitable trajectories for an autonomously moving immersive telepresence robot in mind; rotational acceleration is known for causing the majority of VR sickness, and distance to objects modulates the optical flow. We ran a within-subjects user study (n = 36, women = 18) in which the participants watched three panoramic videos recorded in a virtual museum while aboard an autonomously moving telepresence robot taking three different paths varying in aspects such as turns, speeds, or distances to walls and objects. We found a moderate correlation between the users’ sickness as measured by the SSQ and comfort on a 6-point Likert scale across all paths. However, we detected no association between sickness and the choice of the most comfortable path, showing that sickness is not the only factor affecting the comfort of the user. The subjective experience of turn speed did not correlate with either the SSQ scores or comfort, even though people often mentioned turning speed as a source of discomfort in the open-ended questions. Through exploring the open-ended answers more carefully, a possible reason is that the length and lack of predictability also play a large role in making people observe turns as uncomfortable. A larger subjective distance from walls and objects increased comfort and decreased sickness both in quantitative and qualitative data. Finally, the SSQ subscales and total weighted scores showed differences by age group and by gender.

In this paper we present the results of using a virtual content developed inside a telepresence application. The application combines video-conference with networked virtual environment allowing an instructor and a group of students to manipulate a virtual object in a collaborative manner. The virtual environment describes bones and muscular structures in order to support teaching of musculoskeletical concepts in a remote physiology class. The virtual environment simulates the movement of flexion and extension of the elbow and the muscular contraction. Current preliminary results show that the content developed within telepresence application can compensate for the lack of physical presence of the instructor in the classroom. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Eafit University created a Telepresence application for distance education. It supports bidirectional audio and video and a shared virtual environment that allows the instructor and students to manipulate virtual objects in a collaborative manner, thereby reinforcing the learning process. In this paper we report the experience of creating new contents and deploying the tool in a Physics course at Universidad del Quindío. The tool was improved an extended in order to include new functionality and make it easier for development teams to create new content. Teaching for Understanding was used as pedagogical framework for course creation and also as a guide to develop the interviews that were used to capture user's perceptions and to asses the improvements in the learning process. The results showed that the use of the tool had a positive impact on the students' understanding of the topics at hand. © 2007 Springer.
