This report describes the design of a $\gamma\gamma$ Higgs factory in which 62.8 GeV electron beams collide with 1 keV X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) beams to produce colliding beams of 62.5 GeV photons. The Higgs boson production rate is 34,000 Higgs bosons per $10^7$ second year, roughly the same as the ILC Higgs rate. The electron accelerator is based on cold copper distributed coupling (C$^3$) accelerator technology. The 0.7 J pulse energy of the XFEL represents a 300-fold increase over the pulse energy of current soft x-ray FEL's. We report the results of high gradient testing of two single cell off axis coupled standing wave accelerating structures. Two brazed standing wave side coupled structures with the same geometry were tested one made of pure copper Cu and one made of a copper silver CuAg alloy with silver concentration of 0.08 percent. A peak surface electric field of 450 MV per m was achieved in the CuAg structure for a klystron input power of 14.5 MW and a 1 mirco s pulse length which was 25 percent higher than the peak surface electric field achieved in the Cu structure. The superb high gradient performance was achieved because of the two major optimizations in the cavity geometry 1 the shunt impedance of the cavity was maximized for a peak surface electric field to accelerating gradient ratio of 2 for a fully relativistic particle 2 the peak magnetic field enhancement due to the input coupler was minimized to limit pulse heating. These tests allow us to conclude that C band accelerating structures can operate at peak fields similar to those at higher frequencies while providing a larger beam iris for improved beam transport.

C$^3$ is an opportunity to realize an e$^+$e$^-$ collider for the study of the Higgs boson at $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV, with a well defined upgrade path to 550 GeV while staying on the same short facility footprint. C$^3$ is based on a fundamentally new approach to normal conducting linear accelerators that achieves both high gradient and high efficiency at relatively low cost. Given the advanced state of linear collider designs, the key system that requires technical maturation for C$^3$ is the main linac. This white paper presents the staged approach towards a facility to demonstrate C$^3$ technology with both Direct (source and main linac) and Parallel (beam delivery, damping ring, ancillary component) R&D. A program to build a lepton-collider Higgs factory, to precisely measure the couplings of the Higgs boson to other particles, followed by a higher energy run to establish the Higgs self-coupling and expand the new physics reach, is widely recognized as a primary focus of modern particle physics. We propose a strategy that focuses on a new technology and preliminary estimates suggest that can lead to a compact, affordable machine. New technology investigations will provide much needed enthusiasm for our field, resulting in trained workforce. This cost-effective, compact design, with technologies useful for a broad range of other accelerator applications, could be realized as a project in the US. Its technology innovations, both in the accelerator and the detector, will offer unique and exciting opportunities to young scientists. In this work, we investigated the delivery of a clinically acceptable pediatric whole brain radiotherapy plan at FLASH dose rates using two lateral opposing 40-MeV electron beams produced by a practically realizable linear accelerator system. The EGSnrc Monte Carlo software modules, BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc, were used to generate whole brain radiotherapy plans for a pediatric patient using two lateral opposing 40-MeV electron beams. Electron beam phase space files were simulated using a model of a diverging beam with a diameter of 10 cm at 50 cm SAD (defined at brain midline). The electron beams were collimated using a 10-cm-thick block composed of 5 cm of aluminum oxide and 5 cm of tungsten. For comparison, a 6-MV photon plan was calculated with the Varian AAA algorithm. Electron beam parameters were based on a novel linear accelerator designed for the PHASER system and powered by a commercial 6-MW klystron. Calculations of the linear accelerator's performance indicated an average beam current of at least 6.25 µA, providing a dose rate of 115 Gy/s at isocenter, high enough for cognition-sparing FLASH effects. The electron plan was less homogenous with a homogeneity index of 0.133 compared to the photon plan's index of 0.087. Overall, the dosimetric characteristics of the 40-MeV electron plan were suitable for treatment. In conclusion, Monte Carlo simulations performed in this work indicate that two lateral opposing 40-MeV electron beams can be used for pediatric whole brain irradiation at FLASH dose rates of >115 Gy/s and serve as motivation for a practical clinical FLASH radiotherapy system, which can be implemented in the near future.

Reducing the operating temperature of normal conducting particle accelerators substantially increases their efficiency. Low-temperature operation increases the yield strength of the accelerator material and reduces surface resistance, hence a great reduction in cyclic fatigue could be achieved resulting in a large reduction in breakdown rates compared to room-temperature operation. Furthermore, temperature reduction increases the intrinsic quality factor of the accelerating cavities, and consequently, the shunt impedance leading to increased system efficiency and beam loading capabilities. In this paper, we present an experimental demonstration of the high-gradient operation of an X-band, 11.424 GHz, 20-cells linear accelerator (linac) operating at a liquid nitrogen temperature of 77 K. The tested linac was previously processed and tested at room temperature. We verified the enhanced accelerating parameters of the tested accelerator at cryogenic temperature using different measurements including electron beam acceleration up to a gradient of 150 MV/m, corresponding to a peak surface electric field of 375 MV/m. We also measured the breakdown rates in the tested structure showing a reduction of two orders of magnitude, x100, compared to their values at room temperature for the same accelerating gradient.

We have explored a concept for an advanced Normal-Conducting Radio-Frequency (NCRF) C-band linear accelerator (linac) structure to achieve a high gradient, high power e$^+$e$^-$ linear collider in the TeV class. This design study represents the first comprehensive investigation for an emerging class of distributed coupling accelerator topology exploring nominal cavity geometries, frequency and temperature of operation. The structure features internal manifolds for distributing RF power separately to each cell, permitting the full structure geometry to be designed for high shunt impedance and low breakdown. Optimized within operational constraints, we find that it is advantageous for the structure to be cooled directly by liquid nitrogen (LN), further increasing the shunt impedance. A crucial part of this design process has been cost optimization, which is largely driven by the cost of peak RF power. The first operation of a distributed coupling structure at cryogenic temperatures and the nominal operating gradient 120 MeV/m is also presented, demonstrating the feasibility of achieving high-gradient performance with a cryogenically-cooled normal-conducting accelerating structure.

An improved single-cell photonic band-gap (PBG) structure with an inner row of elliptical rods (PBG-E) was tested with high power at a 60 Hz repetition rate at X-band (11.424 GHz), achieving a gradient of 128 MV/m at a breakdown probability of 3.6×10-3 per pulse per meter at a pulse length of 150 ns. The tested standing-wave structure was a single high-gradient cell with an inner row of elliptical rods and an outer row of round rods; the elliptical rods reduce the peak surface magnetic field by 20% and reduce the temperature rise of the rods during the pulse by several tens of degrees, while maintaining good damping and suppression of high order modes. When compared with a single-cell standing-wave undamped disk-loaded waveguide structure with the same iris geometry under test at the same conditions, the PBG-E structure yielded the same breakdown rate within measurement error. The PBG-E structure showed a greatly reduced breakdown rate compared with earlier tests of a PBG structure with round rods, presumably due to the reduced magnetic fields at the elliptical rods vs the fields at the round rods, as well as use of an improved testing methodology. A post-testing autopsy of the PBG-E structure showed some damage on the surfaces exposed to the highest surface magnetic and electric fields. Despite these changes in surface appearance, no significant change in the breakdown rate was observed in testing. These results demonstrate that PBG structures, when designed with reduced surface magnetic fields and operated to avoid extremely high pulsed heating, can operate at breakdown probabilities comparable to undamped disk-loaded waveguide structures and are thus viable for high-gradient accelerator applications., United States. The receiver system is designed to be both mass-producible, so that the designs could be scaled to thousands of receiver elements, and modular. Most of the receiver function- ality is integrated into compact Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) amplifier-based multichip modules. The MMIC modules include a chain of InP MMIC low-noise amplifiers, coupled-line bandpass filters and sub-harmonic Schottky diode mixers. The receiver signals will be routed to and from the MMIC modules on a multilayer high frequency laminate, which includes splitters, amplifiers, and frequency doublers. We report on the development of some of the key technologies that will be needed for a large-format Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) interferometer with many hundreds of wideband W-band (75-110 GHz) receivers. A scalable threebaseline prototype interferometer is being assembled as a technology demonstration for a future ground- or space-based instrument. Each of the prototype heterodyne receivers integrates two InPMonolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) low-noise amplifiers, a coupled-line bandpass filter, a subharmonic balanced diode mixer, and a 90° local oscillator phase switch into a single compact module that is suitable for mass production. Room temperature measurements indicate bandaveraged receiver noise temperatures of 500 K from 85-100 GHz. Cryogenic receiver noise temperatures are expected to be around 50 K.

Studies in the last 3 years have shown that it could have about one order of magnitude less RF surface resistance (Rs) than Nb at 4 K. A power dependence test using a 6 GHz TE011 mode cavity has shown little power dependence up to ~12 mT (120 Oe), limited by available power, compared to other high-Tc materials such as YBCO. A recent study showed, however, that the power dependence of Rs is dependent on the coating method. A film made with on-axis pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has showed rapid increase in Rs compared to the film deposited by reactive evaporation method. This paper shows these results as well as future plans.

We have investigated the possibility that large rock salt formations might be suitable as target masses for detection of neutrinos of energies about 10 PeV and above. In neutrino interactions at these energies, the secondary electromagnetic cascade produces a coherent radio pulse well above ambient thermal noise via the Askaryan effect. We describe measurements of radio-frequency attenuation lengths and ambient thermal noise in two salt formations. Measurements in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), located in an evaporite salt bed in Carlsbad, NM yielded short attenuation lengths, 3-7 m over 150-300 MHz. However, measurements at United Salt's Hockley mine, located in a salt dome near Houston, Texas yielded attenuation lengths in excess of 250 m at similar frequencies. We have also analyzed early ground-penetrating radar data at Hockley mine and have found additional evidence for attenuation lengths in excess of several hundred meters at 440 MHz. We conclude that salt domes, which may individually contain several hundred cubic kilometer water-equivalent mass, provide attractive sites for next-generation high-energy neutrino detectors., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods
