The efficient conversion of low-energy, near-infrared (NIR) photons to higher energies promises advancements across a range of disparate fields, from more efficient solar energy capture to advanced biologic studies and therapies. At the forefront of this effort, upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) contain an array of lanthanide ions alloyed into a ceramic matrix, most commonly NaYF4. These lanthanide ions possess a 4f orbital manifold with a series of ladder-like, long-lived electronic states, allowing the sequential absorption of NIR photons at relatively low photon flux. The electrons climb the 4f Stark levels, absorbing multiple photons from the excitation source before relaxing back to the ground state upon emission of a photon with an energy higher than those from the source. While UCNPs are among the most efficient systems for converting NIR light to visible, they still hold key limitations, namely, they only weakly absorb incoming photons, hindering their external quantum efficiencies and overall performance. This thesis presents studies designed to enhance the efficiency and brightness of UCNPs. One method to circumvent the inherently weak absorption in UCNPs involves attaching organic dye antennae to the surface of the nanoparticles to absorb incoming light and funnel the absorbed energy into the UCNP. However, a detailed understanding of the energy transfer mechanism between dye and UCNP is required to fully realize the potential of this system. We propose, using a series of spectroscopic and kinetic measurements, that this energy transfer is mediated via the absorbing dye triplet state, and further that the intersystem crossing rate within the dye is enhanced by interactions with the heavy nuclei of the lanthanides within the UCNP. We then design a highly efficient dye:UCNP hybrid system utilizing this new understanding. Lastly we present a study highlighting the power and potential of using UCNPs for biological applications. In order to find a methodology that is a compromise between favorable computational scaling and tolerable errors, a series of nonrelativistic approaches for the calculation of radiative phosphorescence lifetimes are benchmarked against fully relativistic four-component results. The study of the a (3)A(2)-X (1)A(1) transition intensity in the series of H2CX molecules, where X is a chalcogene atom, X={O,S,Se,Te}, indicates a general good agreement between fully relativistic four-component and nonrelativistic perturbation-theoretical calculations. Among the nonrelativistic approaches, the scaled-charge spin-orbit operator approach is recognized as to provide transition matrix elements that are in good agreement with those obtained with the more elaborate Breit-Pauli and atomic mean field spin-orbit operators. This finding supports phosphorescence calculations using the available linear scaling technology for large complexes and, together with effective-core potentials, large complexes including heavy elements., QC 20100525

Photoinduced electron transfer from the valence band of nanocrystalline NiO, a p-type semiconductor, to an excited bound dye, coumarin 343, and the subsequent recombination have been measured by femtosecond transient absorbance spectroscopy probing with white light. It was found that both processes are nonexponential. The photoinduced electron transfer from the semiconductor to the excited bound dye has an ultrafast component (similar to 200 fs), which is comparable to the time constants measured for photoinduced electron injection in C343-TiO2 colloid solutions. The process is very efficient and constitutes the main path of deactivation of the excited dye. Back electron transfer is also remarkably fast, with the main part of the recombination process happening with a time constant of similar to 20 ps. Dye-sensitized nanostructured p-type semiconductors are attractive materials due to their potential use as photocathodes in dye-sensitized solar cells and solid electrolytes in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the photoinduced electron-transfer kinetics of a sensitized p-type semiconductor has been studied., QC 20100525
