Abstract: It has been known since decades that the alignment of a beam of high-energy electrons with particular crystal directions involves a significant increase of bremsstrahlung radiation emission. This enhancement lies at the conceptual foundation of innovative positron source schemes for future lepton colliders. In particular, the so-called hybrid scheme makes use of a heavy-metal radiator in crystalline form, which is then followed by an amorphous metallic converter for positron generation from electrons by means of a two-step electromagnetic process. This work presents the most recent simulation results obtained on the development of a hybrid positron source for the FCC-$ee$ from the standpoint of the features of both the crystalline radiator and the amorphous converter.

Abstract: A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that the electromagnetic shower induced by a high-energy electron, positron or photon incident along the axis of an oriented crystal in Strong Field regime is significantly accelerated. Since the hadronic interactions are not affected by the lattice orientation, a calorimeter composed of oriented crystals could exploit the increased difference between the electromagnetic and hadronic showers to perform particle identification, achieving a better accuracy than a calorimeter composed only of non-aligned crystals. In this work, we report the first quantitative evaluation of the particle identification capability of such a calorimeter, focusing on the case of neutron-gamma discrimination. We demonstrate through Geant4 simulations that the use of oriented crystals significantly improves the performance of a Random Forest classifier trained on the detector data. This work is a proof that oriented calorimeters could be a viable option for future high-intensity particle physics experiments and satellite-based gamma-ray telescopes.

Abstract: Bent crystal are widely used as optics for X-rays, but via the phenomenon of planar channeling they may act as waveguide for relativistic charged particles beam as well, outperforming some of the traditional technologies currently employed. A physical description of the phenomenon and the resulting potential for applications in a particle accelerator is reported. The elastic properties of the anisotropic crystal lattice medium are discussed, introducing different types of curvature which can enable a wide array of bending schemes optimized for each different case features. The technological development of machining strategy and bending solutions useful for the fabrication of crystals suitable in high energy particle manipulations are described. As well as the high precision characterization processes developed in order to satisfy the strict requirements for installation in an accelerator. Finally, the characterization of channeling phenomenon in bent crystal is described, pointing out several experimental setups suitable to comply each specific case constrains.

Abstract: We observed a substantial increase of the scintillation light output of lead tungstate (PbWO$_4$) at a small incidence angle with respect to two main lattice axes. This reflects the acceleration of electromagnetic shower development that occurs in the crystalline Strong Field. We measured the scintillation light generated by $120$-$\mathrm{GeV}$ electrons and $10$-$100$-$\mathrm{GeV}$ $\gamma$ rays on thick samples. This result deepens the knowledge of the shower development mechanisms in crystal scintillators and could pave the way to the development of innovative accelerator- and space-borne calorimeters.

Abstract: Electromagnetic processes of charged particles interaction with oriented crystals provide a wide variety of innovative applications such as beam steering, crystal-based extraction/collimation of leptons and hadrons in an accelerator, a fixed-target experiment on magnetic and electric dipole moment measurement, X-ray and gamma radiation source for radiotherapy and nuclear physics and a positron source for lepton and muon colliders, a compact crystalline calorimeter as well as plasma acceleration in the crystal media. One of the main challenges is to develop an up-to-date, universal and fast simulation tool to simulate these applications. We present a new simulation model of electromagnetic processes in oriented crystals implemented into Geant4, which is a toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. We validate the model with the experimental data as well as discuss the advantages and perspectives of this model for the applications of oriented crystals mentioned above., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

8. Protoplanetary disk shadowing by gas infalling onto the young star AK Sco.

Abstract: Young solar-type stars grow through the accretion of material from the circumstellar disk during pre-main-sequence (PMS) evolution. The ultraviolet radiation generated in this process plays a key role in the chemistry and evolution of young planetary disks. In particular, the hydrogen Ly alpha line (Ly alpha) etches the disk surface by driving photoevaporative flows that control disk evolution. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we have monitored the PMS binary star AK. Sco during the periastron passage and have detected a drop of the H-2 flux by up to 10% lasting 5.9 hr. We show that the decrease of the H-2 flux can be produced by the occultation of the stellar Ly alpha photons by a gas stream in free fall from 3. R*. Abstract: A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract: A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. Abstract: We have observed a significant enhancement in the energy deposition by $25$--$100~\mathrm{GeV}$ photons in a $1~\mathrm{cm}$ thick tungsten crystal oriented along its $\langle 111 \rangle$ lattice axes. At $100~\mathrm{GeV}$, this enhancement, with respect to the value observed without axial alignment, is more than twofold. This effect, together with the measured huge increase in secondary particle generation is ascribed to the acceleration of the electromagnetic shower development by the strong axial electric field. The experimental results have been critically compared with a newly developed Monte Carlo adapted for use with crystals of multi-$X_0$ thickness. The results presented in this paper may prove to be of significant interest for the development of high-performance photon absorbers and highly compact electromagnetic calorimeters and beam dumps for use at the energy and intensity frontiers.

Abstract: A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. Abstract: Scintillating homogeneous detectors represent the state of the art in electromagnetic calorimetry. Moreover, the currently neglected crystalline nature of the most common inorganic scintillators can be exploited to achieve an outstanding performance boost in terms of compactness and energy resolution. In fact, it was recently demonstrated by the AXIAL/ELIOT experiments that a strong reduction in the radiation length inside PWO, and a subsequent enhancement in the scintillation light emitted per unit thickness, are attained when the incident particle trajectory is aligned with a crystal axis within $\sim 1^\circ$. A SiPM-based system has been developed to directly probe this remarkable effect by measuring the scintillation light emitted by a PWO sample. The same concept could be applied to full-scale detectors that would feature a design significantly more compact than currently achievable and unparalleled resolution in the range of interest for present and future experiments.

Abstract: We describe a homogeneous catalog compilation of common proper motion stars based on Gaia DR2. A preliminary list of all pairs of stars within the radius of 100 pc around the Sun with a separation less than a parsec was compiled. Also, a subset of comoving pairs, wide binary stars, was selected. The clusters and systems with multiplicity larger than 2 were excluded from consideration. The resulting catalog contains 10358 pairs of stars. The catalog selectivity function was estimated by comparison with a set of randomly selected field stars and with a model sample obtained by population synthesis. The estimates of the star masses in the catalogued objects, both components of which belong to the main-sequence, show an excess of "twins", composed by stars with similar masses. This excess decreases with increasing separation between components. It is shown that such an effect cannot be a consequence of the selectivity function only and does not appear in the model where star formation of similar masses is not artificially preferred. In this paper we describe the most advanced manufacturing techniques of crystals suitable for operations at ultra-high energy and ultra-high intensity particle accelerators, reporting as an example of potential applications the collimation of the particle beams circulating in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which will be upgraded through the addition of bent crystals in the frame of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project.

Abstract: Precise measurements of the branching ratios for the flavor-changing neutral current decays $K\to\pi\nu\bar{\nu}$ can provide unique constraints on CKM unitarity and, potentially, evidence for new physics. It is important to measure both decay modes, $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ and $K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$, since different new physics models affect the rates for each channel differently. The goal of the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is to measure the BR for the charged channel to within 10%. For the neutral channel, the BR has never been measured. We are designing the KLEVER experiment to measure BR($K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$) to $\sim$20% using a high-energy neutral beam at the CERN SPS starting in LHC Run 4. The boost from the high-energy beam facilitates the rejection of background channels such as $K_L\to\pi^0\pi^0$ by detection of the additional photons in the final state. On the other hand, the layout poses particular challenges for the design of the small-angle vetoes, which must reject photons from $K_L$ decays escaping through the beam exit amidst an intense background from soft photons and neutrons in the beam. Background from $\Lambda \to n\pi^0$ decays in the beam must also be kept under control. We present findings from our design studies for the beamline and experiment, with an emphasis on the challenges faced and the potential sensitivity for the measurement of BR($K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$)., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: We measured a considerable increase of the emitted radiation by 120 GeV/c electrons in an axially oriented lead tungstate scintillator crystal, if compared to the case in which the sample was not aligned with the beam direction. This enhancement resulted from the interaction of particles with the strong crystalline electromagnetic field. The data collected at the external lines of CERN SPS were critically compared to Monte Carlo simulations based on the Baier Katkov quasiclassical method, highlighting a reduction of the scintillator radiation length by a factor of five in case of beam alignment with the [001] crystal axes. The observed effect opens the way to the realization of compact electromagnetic calorimeters/detectors based on oriented scintillator crystals in which the amount of material can be strongly reduced with respect to the state of the art. These devices could have relevant applications in fixed-target experiments as well as in satellite-borne gamma-telescopes.

24. On the nature of quiescent light curves demonstrated by WZ Sge stars

Abstract: We present the results of simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the cataclysmic variable star (hereafter CVs) V455 Andromedae, belonging to the WZ Sge sub-class, in quiescence. Using the spectroscopic data we computed time-resolved Doppler tomograms of the system demonstrating its behavior at different orbital phases. In the tomograms one can see the periodic brightening of different regions within one orbital cycle. We interpret this brightening as being due to the interaction of four phase-locked shock waves in the disk with a specific internal precessing density wave that develops inside the disk, because of the tidal influence of the secondary star, and this density wave propagates up to the disk's outer regions. When the outer part of the density wave in its precessional motion reaches a shock wave the local density grows, which amplifies the shock (by increasing $\rho V^{2}/2$). This results in an additional energy release in the shock and can be observed as a brightening. Analysis of the tomographic results and the photometric data shows that two main sources contribute to the light curves of the system: the radiation of the "hot line" and the bow-shock gives us two major orbital humps, located approximately at the orbital phases $\phi=0.25$ and $\phi=0.75$; the amplification of the four shock waves may give us up to four "superhumps" shifting over the light curve with the precessional period. These two effects, when overlapping, change the shape of the light curves, shift the hump maxima, and they sometimes produce more than two humps in the light curve. We should emphasize that when saying "superhumps" we imply an effect that is observed in quiescent light curves of WZ Sge stars, as opposed to "classical" superhumps usually observed in outbursts.

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we have monitored the PMS binary star AK Sco during the periastron passage and have detected a drop of the H2 flux by up to 10% lasting 5.9 hours. We show that the decrease of the H2 flux can be produced by the occultation of the stellar Lya photons by a gas stream in free fall from 3 R*. Abstract: Under coherent interactions, particles undergo correlated collisions with the crystal lattice and their motion result in confinement in the fields of atomic planes, i.e. particle channeling. Other than coherently interacting with the lattice, particles also suffer incoherent interactions with individual nuclei and may leave their bounded motion, i.e., they de-channel. This latter is the main limiting factor for applications of coherent interactions in crystal-assisted particle steering. We experimentally investigated the nature of dechanneling of 120 GeV/c $e^{-}$ and $e^{+}$ in a bent silicon crystal at H4-SPS external line at CERN. We found out that while channeling efficiency differs significantly for $e^{-}$ ($2\pm2$ $\%$) and $e^{+}$ ($54\pm2$ $\%$), their nuclear dechanneling length is comparable, $(0.6\pm0.1)$ mm for $e^{-}$ and $(0.7\pm0.3)$ mm for $e^{+}$. The experimental proof of the equality of the nuclear dechanneling length for positrons and electrons is interpreted in terms of similar dynamics undergone by the channeled particles in the field of nuclei no matter of their charge.

Abstract: An investigation on the mechanism of relaxation of axially confined 400 GeV/c protons to planar channeling in a bent crystal was carried out at the extracted line H8 from CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The experimental results were critically compared to computer simulations, showing a good agreement. We firmly individuated a necessary condition for the exploitation of axial confinement or its relaxation for particle beam manipulation in high-energy accelerators. We demonstrated that with a short bent crystal, aligned with one of its main axis to the beam direction, it is possible to realize either a total beam steerer or a beam splitter with adjustable intensity. In particular, in the latter case, a complete relaxation from axial confinement to planar channeling takes place, resulting in beam splitting into the two strongest skew planar channels.

30. XMM-Newton monitoring of the close pre-main-sequence binary AK Sco. Evidence of tide driven filling of the inner gap in the circumbinary disk

Abstract: AK~Sco stands out among pre-main sequence binaries because of its prominent ultraviolet excess, the high eccentricity of its orbit and the strong tides driven by it. AK Sco consists of two F5 type stars that get as close as 11R$_*$ at periastron passage. The presence of a dense ($n_e \sim 10^{11}$~cm$^{-3}$) extended envelope has been unveiled recently. In this article, we report the results from a XMM-Newton based monitoring of the system. We show that at periastron, X-ray and UV fluxes are enhanced by a factor of $\sim 3$ with respect to the apastron values. The X-ray radiation is produced in an optically thin plasma with T$\sim 6.4\times 10^{6}$ K and it is found that the N$_H$ column density rises from 0.35$\times 10^{21}$~cm$^{-2}$ at periastron to 1.11$\times 10^{21}$~cm$^{-2}$ at apastron, in good agreement with previous polarimetric observations. The UV emission detected in the Optical Monitor band seems to be caused by the reprocessing of the high energy magnetospheric radiation on the circumstellar material. Further evidence of the strong magnetospheric disturbances is provided by the detection of line broadening of 278.7~km~s$^{-1}$ in the N~V line with HST/STIS. Numerical simulations of the mass flow from the circumbinary disk to the components have been carried out. They provide a consistent scenario with which to interpret AK~Sco observations. We show that the eccentric orbit acts like a gravitational piston. At apastron, matter is dragged efficiently from the inner disk border, filling the inner gap and producing accretion streams that end as ring-like structures around each component of the system. At periastron, the ring-like structures come into contact, leading to angular momentum loss, and thus producing an accretion outburst., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

Further evidence of the strong magnetospheric disturbances is provided by the detection of line broadening of 278.7~km~s$^{-1}$ in the N~V line with HST/STIS. Numerical simulations of the mass flow from the circumbinary disk to the components have been carried out. They provide a consistent scenario with which to interpret AK~Sco observations. We show that the eccentric orbit acts like a gravitational piston. At apastron, matter is dragged efficiently from the inner disk border, filling the inner gap and producing accretion streams that end as ring-like structures around each component of the system. At periastron, the ring-like structures come into contact, leading to angular momentum loss, and thus producing an accretion outburst., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

Abstract: The structure of a circumstellar envelope around a young binary T Tauri star is considered. The supersonic orbital motion of the system components in the envelope gas leads to the formation of bow shocks around the star. Two- and three-dimensional numerical modeling indicates an important role of these shocks in the formation of the structure of the circumbinary envelope. In particular, for systems with circular orbits, the size of the central region of the envelope that is not filled with matter (the gap) is essentially determined by the parameters of the bow shocks. 34. Risk Factors of Acute Lung Injury in Cancer Patients after Operations Accompanied by Excessive Blood Loss

Abstract: Objective: to evaluate the clinical significance of risk factors of acute lung injury (ALI) in cancer patients who have experienced acute excessive intraoperative blood loss (AEIBL), hemorrhagic shock (HS), and acute disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and massive infusion-transfusion therapy. Subjects and methods. Operative days were analyzed in patients from three groups who had sustained AEIBL of 100 to 550% of the circulating blood volume. Group 1 consisted of 14 patients who had experienced HS or HS + acute DIC after extensive intraperitoneal surgical interventions. Group 2 comprised 16 patients who had undergone extensive surgical interventions involving extended thoracic lymph dissection. Group 3 included 15 patients after extensive intraperitoneal surgical interventions. Patients with evolved ALI were identified in each group. In all the patients, an excess (balance) of fluid and oncotic pressure were detected at the end of operative days. Results. There were 4 patients (2 with ALI and 2 with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)) in Group 1 and 11 patients (2 with ALI and 9 with ARDS) in Group 2. Patients with ALI were not identified in Group 3. At the end of operative days, the excess of fluid turned out to double in patients with evolved ALI/ARDS than in those without signs of respiratory failure. Conclusion. Of the greatest significance in the natural history of ALI in this cohort of patients are the following risk factors: surgical injury and extended thoracic lymph dissection; HS, with cardiovasotonics being used for more than 8 hours; excess fluid accumulation by the end of operative days. The safe excess fluid volume was determined, which was not greater than 50 ml/kg in the patients who had undergone peritoneal surgery and even experienced HS, but with cardiovasotonics being administered for not more than 4 hours. That was 20 ml/kg in those who had sustained excessive surgical injury + thoracic lymph dissection. Key words: acute lung, Цель исследования — оценить клиническую значимость факторов риска развития ОПЛ у онкологических больных, перенесших острую массивную интраоперационную кровопотерю (ОМИК), геморрагический шок (ГШ), острый синдром ДВС, массивную инфузионно-трансфузионную терапию. Материал и методы. Проведен анализ операционных суток у больных 3-х групп, перенесших ОМИК от 100 до 550% ОЦК. 1-я группа — 14 больных после обширных внутрибрюшных хирургических вмешательств, перенесших ГШ, или ГШ + острый синдром ДВС. 2-я группа — 16 больных после обширных хирургических вмешательств, включавших расширенную лимфодиссекцию в грудной полости. 3-я группа — 15 больных после обширных внутрибрюшных хирургических вмешательств. В каждой группе выявляли больных с развившимся ОПЛ. У всех больных определяли избыток (баланс) жидкости и КОД в конце операционных суток. Результаты. 1-я группа — 4 больных (2 — ОПЛ, 2 — ОРДС); 2-я группа — 11 больных (2 — ОПЛ, 9 — ОРДС); в 3-й группе больных с ОПЛ не выявлено. У больных с развившимся ОПЛ/ОРДС величина избытка жидкости в конце операционных суток оказалась вдвое больше, чем у больных без признаков дыхательной недостаточности. Заключение. Наибольшую значимость в патогенезе ОПЛ у данной категории больных представляют следующие факторы риска: операционная травма и расширенная лимфодиссекция в грудной полости; геморрагический шок с периодом применения кардиовазотоников более 8 ч; избыточное накопление жидкости в организме к концу операционных суток. Определен безопасный объем избытка жидкости, который у больных, оперированных в брюшной полости и даже перенесших геморрагический шок, но с периодом применения кардиовазотоников не более 4 ч, составляет не более 50 мл/кг. У пациентов, перенесших обширную хирургическую травму + лимфодиссекцию в грудной полости — 20 мл/кг.
