Im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Graduiertenkollegs GRK 2462 "Prozesse in natürlichen und technischen Partikel-Fluid-Systemen" (PintPFS) untersuchen Forscherinnen und Forscher aus den Bereichen Bauingenieurwesen, Maschinenbau, Verfahrenstechnik und Materialwissenschaften in einem interdisziplinären Ansatz natürliche und technische Partikel-Fluid-Systeme (PFS). Da PFS im Alltag allgegenwärtig und für viele Prozesse in Industrie, Pharmazie und Lebensmittelproduktion relevant sind, stellen sie ein hochinteressantes Forschungsfeld dar, das in vielerlei Hinsicht vielversprechende und nützliche Erkenntnisse verspricht., In the framework of Research Training Group GRK 2462 “Processes in Natural and Technical Particle-Fluid-Systems” (PintPFS), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), researchers from the fields of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, and materials sciences investigate natural and technical Particle-Fluid-Systems (PFS) in an interdisciplinary approach. As PFS are ubiquitous in everyday life and relevant for many processes in industry, pharmacy, and food production, they represent a fascinating field of research with potential for promising and useful discoveries in many aspects.

It is currently unknown whether patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) with relatives with dementia or Parkinson's disease (familial DLB patients) have a different phenotype than sporadic DLB patients. In this study, we aimed to examine disease onset, rate of cognitive decline, survival, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers in patients with familial DLB (n = 154) and sporadic DLB (n = 137), using linear mixed model analysis and Cox regression analysis, among others. Familial patients had a shorter survival (8.0 years) and more often elevated cerebrospinal fluid AD biomarkers (47%) than sporadic patients (9.0 years; p≤0.001; 30%, p = 0.037). Our findings suggest that genetic factors are important in DLB and that the identification of new genetic factors will probably improve the prediction of prognosis.

Among the new emerging cancer therapies, Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) is currently showing very promising results in terms of limiting or decreasing tumor growth while keeping the damage to healthy tissue to a minimum. The MRT is able to deliver unprecedented dose rates of up to 20 kGy/s, posing important questions in terms of treatment planning and patient safety during treatment. For this reason, a beam monitoring system must be built, in which a detector acquires the microbeam array profile in real-time. In case of anomalies detection, the detector signals the beam-line to close the shutter as an emergency safety measure. Many sensors technologies for beam monitoring are currently being considered and silicon strip detectors seem to be very promising candidates. In this study the characterisation in full MRT conditions of a novel silicon strip detector is reported explaining strengths and weaknesses of the devices. Modifications to the sensor layout are also suggested in this study.

CuSCN extremely thin absorber solar cell. Nanostructured TiO2 deposited by screen printing on an ITO substrate was used as an n-type electrode. An ∼80 nm extremely thin layer of the system In2S3-Sb2S3 deposited by successive ionic layer adsorption and a reaction (silar) method was used as an absorber. The voids were filled with p-type CuSCN and the entire assembly was completed with a gold contact. The solar cell fabricated with this heterostructure showed an energy conversion efficiency of 4.9%, which is a promising result in the development of low cost and simple fabrication of solar cells.

The chemical and physical alterations of cadmium yellow (CdS) paints in Henri Matisse’s The Joy of Life (1905–1906, The Barnes Foundation) have been recognized since 2006, when a survey by portable X-ray fluorescence identified this pigment in all altered regions of the monumental painting. This alteration is visible as fading, discoloration, chalking, flaking, and spalling of several regions of light to medium yellow paint. Since that time, synchrotron radiation-based techniques including elemental and spectroscopic imaging, as well as X-ray scattering have been employed to locate and identify the alteration products observed in this and related works by Henri Matisse. This information is necessary to formulate one or multiple mechanisms for degradation of Matisse’s paints from this period, and thus ensure proper environmental conditions for the storage and the display of his works. This paper focuses on 2D full-field X-ray Near Edge Structure imaging, 2D micro-X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence, and Fourier Transform Infra-red imaging of the altered paint layers to address one of the long-standing questions about cadmium yellow alteration—the roles of cadmium carbonates and cadmium sulphates found in the altered paint layers. These compounds have often been assumed to be photo-oxidation products, but could also be residual starting reagents from an indirect wet process synthesis of CdS. The data presented here allow identifying and mapping the location of cadmium carbonates, cadmium chlorides, cadmium oxalates, cadmium sulphates, and cadmium sulphides in thin sections of altered cadmium yellow paints from The Joy of Life and Matisse’s Flower Piece (1906, The Barnes Foundation). Distribution of various cadmium compounds confirms that cadmium carbonates and sulphates are photo-degradation products in The Joy of Life, whereas in Flower Piece, cadmium carbonates appear to have been a [(partially) unreacted] starting reagent for the yellow paint, a role previousl

The development of a wavelength-dispersive spectrometer for microfluorescence analysis at the X-ray Microscopy ID21 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is reported. The spectrometer is based on a polycapillary optic for X-ray fluorescence collection and is operated in a flat-crystal geometry. The design considerations as well as operation characteristics of the spectrometer are presented. The achieved performances, in particular the energy resolution, are compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulations. Further improvement in the energy resolution, down to ~eV range, by employing a double-crystal geometry is examined. Finally, examples of applications requiring both spatial and spectral resolutions are presented.

We demonstrate that ultralow-level Al impurities on a silicon surface can be measured by using the high-resolution grazing emission x-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) technique combined with synchrotron-radiation excitation. An Al-impurity level of about 10¹² atoms/cm² was reached by observing the Al Kα x-ray fluorescence in the resonant Raman-scattering background-“free” regime by choosing an appropriate beam energy below the Si K absorption edge. Present results show that by combining the GEXRF method with the vapor phase decomposition technique the 10⁷ atoms/cm² level can be reached for Al detection on silicon. Finally, we found that the high-resolution GEXRF technique is a sensitive tool to study the morphology of surface nanostructures.
