High juvenile mortality rates are typical of many long‐lived marine vertebrate predators. Insufficient development in dive and forage ability is considered a key driver of this. However, direct links to survival outcome are sparse, particularly in free‐ranging marine animals that may not return to land. In this study, we conduct exploratory investigations toward early mortality in juvenile southern elephant seals Mirounga leonina. Twenty postweaning pups were equipped with (a) a new‐generation satellite relay data tag, capable of remotely transmitting fine‐scale behavioral movements from accelerometers, and (b) a location transmitting only tag (so that mortality events could be distinguished from device failures). Individuals were followed during their first trip at sea (until mortality or return to land). Two analyses were conducted. First, the behavioral movements and encountered environmental conditions of nonsurviving pups were individually compared to temporally concurrent observations from grouped survivors. Second, common causes of mortality were investigated using Cox's proportional hazard regression and penalized shrinkage techniques. Nine individuals died (two females and seven males) and 11 survived (eight females and three males). All but one individual died before the return phase of their first trip at sea, and all but one were negatively buoyant. Causes of death were variable, although common factors included increased horizontal travel speeds and distances, decreased development in dive and forage ability, and habitat type visited (lower sea surface temperatures and decreased total [eddy] kinetic energy). For long‐lived marine vertebrate predators, such as the southern elephant seal, the first few months of life following independence represent a critical period, when small deviations in behavior from the norm appear sufficient to increase mortality risk. Survival rates may subsequently be particularly vulnerable to changes in climate and environment

The Southern elephant seal (SES) is a marine species that can be found at sea throughout the Southern Ocean on most sub-Antarctic islands. An unusual record of a solitary Southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) in freshwater habitat is reported. The seal was found 16 km upstream from the mouth of the Toltén River, in southern Chile (39°9’S; 73°10’W). The individual was classified as a sub-adult male approximately 3 m in length. Potential causes for the unusual presence of the seal in a river include feeding on native estuarine fishes and non-native Chinook salmon or resting. Long lasting resting (5 days) in the Toltén River by the seal may indicate suitable habitat and/or lack of disturbance.

A mammal’s gastro-intestinal tract houses trillions of bacteria, known as the gut microbiota, which is first acquired during birth. This community provides a number of beneficial functions to the host, including breakdown of food and creation of energy, immunity regulation and cellular development. To date, studies on the mammalian gut microbiota have focused primarily on captive or laboratory-reared terrestrial mammals and there have been a limited number of studies on mammals living under natural conditions or from marine environments. This thesis aimed to address this knowledge gap through a study on the gut microbiota of the southern elephant seal, Mirounga leonina, and the leopard seal, Hydrurga leptonyx, inhabiting Antarctica. The study was designed to understand how time, diet, phylogeny, age, sex, maternal relationship, sewage contamination and captivity influence composition. DNA extracted from faecal samples was analysed via multiple molecular methods to identify an individual’s gut microbiota. The community was dominated by four phyla: Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes and was identified as stable over a period of months. Diet-driven differences were noted between individuals as a result of species, captivity, sex and age. Specifically, nutrient composition of the diet and bacteria associated with the diet were identified as strong influences on the gut microbiota. Length of the gut, social interactions and antibiotic use were also identified as contributing factors. Despite the observed differences in the gut microbiota between hosts, a ‘core’ microbiota was identified between Antarctic seal species and also between three related species of Arctic seals. This is suggested to be a result of co-evolution which is maintained over generations via transfer from mother to pup. Bacterial isolates possessing virulence factors and resistance to antimicrobial agents were also identified in the gut of these hosts suggest

When resources are limited or patchy, a species may develop some degree of resource partitioning to reduce intra-specific competition. Development of intra-specific resource partitioning is more pronounced in species with clear phenotypic variation among individuals (e.g. age or sex). Southern elephant seals Mirounga leonina have pronounced sexual dimorphism and range widely in size and foraging range between juvenile and adult stages. However, hypothesized diet-based resource partitioning has been less clear due to difficulties in sampling diet while seals are away from breeding islands. We analysed fatty acids (FAs) from blubber of 122 juvenile seals and compared them to FA profiles from blubber of 52 adult females, and to FA profiles from 51 prey species (grouped as fish and squid) to examine evidence for diet-based resource partitioning in the seals. FA signature analysis revealed physiological and dietary differences between ages. Principle components of the 21 FAs from seal blubber and prey parts distinguished prey from seals, and clearly separatedprey species into fish and squid classes. FA profiles from adult females differed to those from juveniles, with the former more ‘squid-like’ and the latter more ‘fish-like’. Variation in FA profiles of seals was also apparent between sexes and during different seasons. Differences in diet between juveniles and adult females suggest resource partitioning occurs in response to large metabolic and physiological differences with age that limit juvenile dispersal and diving abilities. By consuming a different suite of prey species relative to adult females, juvenile southern elephant seals may reduce intra-specific competition.
