Graphene scroll is an emerging 1D tubular form of graphitic carbon that has potential applications in electrochemical energy storage. However, it still remains a challenge to composite graphene scrolls with other nanomaterials for building advanced electrode configuration with fast and durable lithium storage properties. Here, a transition-metal-oxide-based hierarchically ordered 3D porous electrode is designed based on assembling 1D core-sheath MnO@N-doped graphene scrolls with 2D N-doped graphene ribbons. In the resulting architecture, porous MnO nanowires confined in tubular graphene scrolls are mechanically isolated but electronically wellconnected, while the interwoven graphene ribbons offer continuous conductive paths for electron transfer in all directions. Moreover, the elastic graphene scrolls together with enough internal voids are able to accommodate the volume expansion of the enclosed MnO. Because of these merits, the as-built electrode manifests ultrahigh rate capability (349 mAh g−1 at 8.0 A g−1; 205 mAh g−1 at 15.0 A g−1) and robust cycling stability (812 mAh g−1 remaining after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g−1) and is the most efficient MnO-based anode ever reported for lithium-ion batteries. This unique multidimensional and hierarchically ordered structure design is believed to hold great potential in generalizable synthesis of graphene scrolls composited with oxide nanowires for mutifuctional energy storage.

This is a study of the formation of the ‘Book’ of Psalms that attempts to provide answers to two fundamental questions: “how?” and “why?”. The first relates to the diachronic growth of the collection (how are these processes to be reconstructed, and on what grounds?), while the second relates to questions of purpose (to what end are psalms being juxtaposed in a collection?). Proceeding from a review of the research on these intertwined issues (not least the ground-breaking work of Gerald H. Wilson), David Willgren argues that one fundamental aspect is still in need of consideration, namely to understand what is designated by the term ‘book’ in relation to the ‘Book’ of Psalms. What kind of collection does it imply? By conceptualizing the ‘Book’ of Psalms as an anthology, and by inquiring into its poetics by means of paratextuality, Willgren reframes the current discussion, and relates the formation process(es) to ancient material and scribal cultures. After a chapter on comparative ancient anthologies, he provides an overview of the ‘psalms’ scrolls from the Judean Desert, followed by an analysis of possible paratexts (prefaces, superscriptions, colophons, doxologies, etc.). Then, he searches for traces of collections of psalms in texts ranging from the Hebrew Bible up until the second century CE. Relating these observations to each other, Willgren provides a fresh reconstruction of the formation of the ‘Book’ of Psalms and concludes, in contrast to the canonical approach, that the ‘Book’ of Psalms does not primarily provide a literary context for individual psalms. Rather, it preserves a dynamic selection of psalms that is best seen not as a book of psalms, but as a canon of psalms.

Let X subset of P-N be a scroll over an m-dimensional variety Y. We find the locally free sheaves on X governing the osculating behavior of X, and, under certain dimension assumptions, we compute the cohomology class and the degree of the inflectional locus of X. The case m = 1 was treated in [9]. During the past half century, there has, surprisingly, been a remarkable development of interest in the subject of Hebrew manuscripts and their effect on our knowledge of past history. Undoubtedly, the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has played the major role in this development, and well it should have – for people in many countries around the world have felt personally connected to the very contents of these texts, whether for religious or purely humanistic reasons. It is quite likely the spillover from this effect that has in recent decades aroused many scholars and students to awaken from a certain lethargy and ponder the valuable new insights that await them from a perusal of still other old Hebrew manuscripts – both those never before published, and others once condemned as mere forgeries or deviations from a view of history thought to be certain beyond doubt. I will deal in my final two lectures with some of the most important of these latter texts, while concentrating this evening on that most compelling of topics, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the controversy that now envelops them.
