The report discusses the design parameters, construction, and some potential applications of an electron impact device which does not provide for mass analysis. Such a device was described by Lozier in 1930 but has not been used extensively since the use of mass spectrometers to study the ionization of molecules has become more general. Mass analysis obviously provides essential information on ionization processes, but the ion sources used in mass spectrometry introduce some generally unknown degree of mass and energy discrimination. The Lozier tube therefore offers some promise as a device to supplement mass spectrometric studies of ionization processes. (Author)
