Silver vanadates with light absorption properties in the visible region were successfully prepared by a low temperature pathway (not exceeding 110 °C) using an optimized microemulsion methodology. The resulting materials were evaluated as photocatalysts in Rhodamine B photodegradation and characterized before and after reaction. The silver vanadates displayed silver metallic nanoparticles decorating the surface. The as-prepared Ag3VO4 catalyst was the most active. Nevertheless, this silver vanadate suffered important changes during reaction. The initial structure evolves yielding a silver pyrovanadate, Ag4V2O7, with a concomitant increase of the number and size of the silver metallic nanoparticles. El propósito de este trabajo de fin de grado es realizar una intervención educativa con el alumnado de 4º de Primaria, con el objetivo de estudiar como influye el desarrollo de una situación de aprendizaje basada en los juegos cooperativos al desarrollo, mejora y adquisición de habilidades social del alumnado. Para ello, se han tomado los datos de un diario de sesiones, además de contar con una escala de evaluación para ver cómo ha ido evolucionando el desarrollo de las habilidades sociales a lo largo de las sesiones. Por otra parte, se ha recogido información con una autoevaluación del alumnado que se ha realizado al terminar la situación de aprendizaje. Las conclusiones del trabajo muestran que los juegos cooperativos son un medio idóneo para el desarrollo y adquisición de las habilidades sociales por parte del alumnado, sobre todo al enfocarse a actividades no competitivas., The purpose of this end-of-degree project is to carry out an educational intervention with 4th year primary school pupils, with the aim of studying how the development of a learning situation based on cooperative games influences the development, improvement and acquisition of pupils' social skills. The CO2 methanation mechanism over the highly active (TOF=75.1 h−1), selective (>92%) and stable 10% LaNiO3/CeO2-derived catalyst is still unresolved. The surface of the catalyst is monitored under hydrogenation (H2), oxidizing (CO2) and CO2 methanation (H2 +CO2) conditions by near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) using synchrotron radiation. Meanwhile, the main reaction intermediates are identified by in situ FTIR analysis. NAP-XPS experiments confirm that LaNiO3 perovskite reduction leads to the ex-solution of Ni0 nanoparticles and Ni2+single bondCeO2−x and Ni2+single bondLa2O3 interfaces conformation, favouring the CO2 adsorption and the H2 dissociation/transfer. In situ FTIR experiments combined with the C1s spectra (NAP-XPS) suggest that the CO2 activation occurs on CeO2−x (oxygen vacancies and OH–) at low temperatures, in the form of bicarbonates; whereas, mono-/bidentate carbonates are formed on different strength La2O3 sites at increasing temperatures. These species are consecutively reduced to formates, as the main reaction intermediate, and methane by the H spilled from Ni0 nanoparticles near to NiOsingle bondCeO2−x and NiOsingle bondLa2O3 interfaces.

Environmental flows (e-flows) aim to mitigate the threat of altered hydrological regimes in river systems and connected waterbodies and are an important component of integrated strategies to address multiple threats to freshwater biodiversity. Expanding and accelerating implementation of e-flows can support river conservation and help to restore the biodiversity and resilience of hydrologically altered and water-stressed rivers and connected freshwater ecosystems. While there have been significant developments in e-flow science, assessment, and societal acceptance, implementation of e-flows within water resource management has been slower than required and geographically uneven. This review explores critical factors that enable successful e-flow implementation and biodiversity outcomes in particular, drawing on 13 case studies and the literature. It presents e-flow implementation as an adaptive management cycle enabled by 10 factors: legislation and governance, financial and human resourcing, stakeholder engagement and co-production of knowledge, collaborative monitoring of ecological and social-economic outcomes, capacity training and research, exploration of trade-offs among water users, removing or retrofitting water infrastructure to facilitate e-flows and connectivity, and adaptation to climate change. Recognising that there may be barriers and limitations to the full and effective enablement of each factor, the authors have identified corresponding options and generalizable recommendations for actions to overcome prominent constraints, drawing on the case studies and wider literature. The urgency of addressing flow-related freshwater biodiversity loss demands collaborative networks to train and empower a new generation of e-flow practitioners equipped with the latest tools and insights to lead adaptive environmental water management globally. La disponibilidad de datos de propiedades fisicoquímicas es fundamental para direccionar esfuerzos hacia la identificación de los estándares de calidad de la miel de pote de Melipona beecheii. En este contexto, otras propiedades diferentes de aquellas típicamente consideradas para Apis mellifera podrían también ser relevantes para caracterizar la miel de esta abeja sin aguijón. Se analizaron las propiedades fisicoquímicas, reológicas y térmicas de la miel de pote de Melipona beecheii (Yucatán, México). Se recolectaron muestras de dos temporadas de cosecha anuales (2018 y 2019) y de una locación rural y una urbana. Empleando técnicas estándar, se midieron la acidez libre, la humedad, los azúcares reductores totales, la actividad diastásica, el contenido hidroximetilfurfural y la conductividad eléctrica. Los comportamientos reológico y térmico se determinaron por reometría tipo Couette y calorimetría diferencial de barrido respectivamente. Las propiedades fisicoquímicas de la miel de pote de Melipona beecheii se pueden incorporar a una especificación general de calidad para la miel de género Neotropical Melipona, o como base para una estandarización regional (Mesoamericana) de la miel de esta especie particular de abeja. Los análisis reológicos indicaron el comportamiento Newtoniano de la miel de Melipona para todo el rango estudiado de 10-40 °C (7,545-244 cp), mostrando viscosidades dinámicas significativamente menores que aquellas esperadas en la miel de Apis mellifera, primordialmente debido a su mayor contenido de agua. Se detectaron dos transiciones endotérmicas relevantes por calorimetría diferencial de barrido: a 96-162 °C y a 169-230 °C. In this vein, other properties apart from those typically considered for Apis mellifera could also be relevant in characterizing the honey of this stingless bee. The physicochemical, rheological, and thermal properties of pot-honey from Melipona beecheii (Yucatán, México) were analyzed. Samples were collected from two annual harvests (2018 and 2019) and from a rural and an urban location. Free acidity, moisture, total reducing sugars, diastase activity, hydroxymethylfurfural content, and electrical conductivity were measured using standard techniques. The rheological and thermal behaviors were determined via Couette rheometry and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The physicochemical properties of Melipona beecheii pot-honey can be incorporated into a general quality specification for honey of the Neotropical Melipona genus, or as the basis for a regional (Mesoamerican) standardization of honey from this particular bee species. The rheological analyses indicated the Newtonian behavior of Melipona honey in the full studied range of 10-40 °C (7,545-244 cp), showing dynamic viscosities significantly lower than those expected for Apis mellifera honey, primarily due to its high water content. Two main endothermic transitions were detected via differential scanning calorimetry: at 96-162 °C and at 169-230 °C. The Apis mellifera honey samples showed the same thermal transitions but differed from Melipona beecheii honey in their peak temperatures and enthalpies.

Atmospheric deposition of desert dust and other aerosols influence on the open ocean ecosystem and climate. These aerosols provide iron, phosphorus and bio-essential trace elements, which affect the composition and growth of phytoplankton, generating new organic matter that is distributed across the food web. Although this process has an impact on upper trophic levels and fisheries, direct evidence is lacking. Skipjack tropical tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) is the most important commercial tuna in the Atlantic, main stocks occur in the tropical and subtropical North-East Atlantic. We found that the migrations and fisheries of skipjack are connected to Saharan dust variability. From boreal winter to summer, skipjack performs an Atlantic-Saharan migration, from equatorial (0-5°N) to subtropical waters of the North-East Atlantic (regularly reaching open waters off Mauritania ∼20°N and the Canary Islands ∼28°N), tracking the seasonal shift of dust deposition in the North-East Atlantic. The observed long-term associations of skipjack catch with the seasonal cycles, anomalies and meridional variability of dust over the North-East Atlantic, shows that along the year skipjack catches mainly occur in waters affected by massive dust deposition linked (i) to dust wet deposition in tropical waters and (ii) to dust dry deposition in the Saharan desert-dust outflow. Atmospheric deposition of dust in the open ocean and in upwelling waters contributes to support zooplankton-rich areas, which are optimal for feeding small fish, molluscs and cephalopods, and suitable for feeding large predators, as skipjacks, where they are caught in abundance. Detailed knowledge on the formation of new aerosol particles in the atmosphere from precursor gases, and their subsequent growth, commonly known as new particle formation (NPF) events, is one of the largest challenges in atmospheric aerosol science. High pre-existing particle loadings are expected to suppress the formation of new atmospheric aerosol particles due to high coagulation and condensation (CS) sinks. However, NPF events are regularly observed in conditions with high concentrations of pre-existing particles and even during intense desert dust intrusions that imply discrepancies between the observations and theory. In this study, we present a multi-site analysis of the occurrence of NPF events under the presence of desert dust particles in dust-influenced areas. Characterization of NPF events at five different locations highly influenced by desert dust outbreaks was done under dusty and non-dusty conditions using continuous measurements of aerosol size distribution in both fine and coarse size fractions. Contrary to common thought, our results show that the occurrence of NPF events is highly frequent during desert dust outbreaks, showing that NPF event frequencies during dusty conditions are similar to those observed during non-dusty conditions. Furthermore, our results show that NPF events also occur during intense desert dust outbreaks at all the studied sites, even at remote sites where the amounts of precursor vapours are expected to be low. Our results show that the condensation sink associated with coarse particles (CSC) represents up to the 60 % of the total CS during dusty conditions, which highlights the importance of considering coarse-fraction particles for NPF studies in desert-dust-influenced areas. However, we did not find a clear pattern of the effect of desert dust outbreaks on the strength of NPF events, with differences from site to site. El cambio climático y la crisis global de calidad del aire son fenómenos que están teniendo impactos en numerosos aspectos de la sociedad, incluyendo la atención médica en general y en los servicios de urgencias en particular. En 2021 la Organización Mundial de la Salud declaró que el cambio climático es “la mayor amenaza para la salud a la que enfrenta la humanidad”1, motivo por el que este organismo publicó nuevas directrices de calidad del aire, recomendando reducir drásticamente los niveles de contaminación en el aire ambiente. Recientemente, y en relación a los escenarios meteorológicos que estamos viviendo en este nuevo escenario climático, el secretario general de la ONU declaro “la humanidad ha abierto las puertas del infierno”.

Mineral dust produced by wind erosion of arid and semi-arid surfaces is a major component of atmospheric aerosol that affects climate, weather, ecosystems, and socio-economic sectors such as human health, transportation, solar energy, and air quality. Understanding these effects and ultimately improving the resilience of affected countries requires a reliable, dense, and diverse set of dust observations, fundamental for the development and the provision of skillful dust forecasts tailored products. The last decade has seen a notable improvement of dust observational capabilities in terms of considered parameters, geographical coverage, and delivery times, as well as of tailored products of interest to both the scientific community and the various end-users. Given this progress, here we review the current state of observational capabilities including in-situ, ground-based and satellite remote sensing observations, in Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe for the provision of dust information considering the needs of various users. We also critically discuss observational gaps and related unresolved questions while providing suggestions for overcoming the current limitations. Our review aims to be a milestone for discussing dust observational gaps at a global level to address the needs of users, from research communities to non-scientific stakeholders.

The mineralogical composition of airborne dust particles is an important but often neglected parameter for several physiochemical processes, such as atmospheric radiative transfer and ocean biochemistry. We present the development of the METAL-WRF module for the simulation of the composition of desert dust minerals in atmospheric aerosols. The new development is based on the GOCART-AFWA dust module of WRF-Chem. A new wet deposition scheme has been implemented in the dust module alongside the existing dry deposition scheme. The new model includes separate prognostic fields for nine (9) minerals: illite, kaolinite, smectite, calcite, quartz, feldspar, hematite, gypsum, and phosphorus, derived from the GMINER30 database and also iron derived from the FERRUM30 database. Two regional model sensitivity studies are presented for dust events that occurred in August and December 2017, which include a comparison of the model versus elemental dust composition measurements performed in the North Atlantic (at Izaña Observatory, Tenerife Island) and in the eastern Mediterranean (at Agia Marina Xyliatos station, Cyprus Island). The results indicate the important role of dust minerals, as dominant aerosols, for the greater region of North Africa, South Europe, the North Atlantic, and the Middle East, including the dry and wet depositions away from desert sources. Overall, METAL-WRF was found to be capable of reproducing the relative abundances of the different dust minerals in the atmosphere. In particular, the concentration of iron (Fe), which is an important element for ocean biochemistry and solar absorption, was modeled in good agreement with the corresponding measurements at Izaña Observatory (22% overestimation) and at Agia Marina Xyliatos site (4% overestimation). Further model developments, including the implementation of newer surface mineralogical datasets, e.g., from the NASA-EMIT satellite mission, can be implemented in the model to improve its accuracy.

Riolozatrione (RZ) is a diterpenoid compound isolated from a dichloromethane extract of the Jatropha dioica root. This compound has been shown to possess moderate anti-herpetic activity in vitro. However, because of the poor solubility of this compound in aqueous vehicles, generating a stable formulation for potential use in the treatment of infection is challenging. The aim of this work was to optimize and physiochemically characterize Eudragit® L100-55-based polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with RZ (NPR) for in vitro anti-herpetic application. The NPs formulation was initially optimized using the dichloromethane extract of J. dioica, the major component of which was RZ. The optimized NPR formulation was stable, with a size of 263 nm, polydispersity index < 0.2, the zeta potential of –37 mV, and RZ encapsulation efficiency of 89 %. The NPR showed sustained release of RZ for 48 h with release percentages of 95 and 97 % at neutral and slightly acidic pH, respectively. Regarding in vitro anti-herpetic activity, the optimized NPR showed a selectivity index for HSV-1 of ≈16 and for HSV-2 of 13.

[Aims]: The main objective of this study is to determine whether exposure to Saharan dust causes airway inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with stable chronic heart failure (HF) and a left ventricular ejection fraction of less than 40%. [Methods]: A longitudinal study design is used, involving the inclusion of 40 patients with stable chronic HF and a left ventricular ejection fraction of less than 40%. Four sputum samplings will be taken from each patient, with one sampling taken each week over four consecutive weeks. The sputum samples will be used to analyze the degree of inflammation and oxidative stress. Air quality monitoring stations will be used to analyze the particulate matter (PM) exposure of each patient. The intrusion of desert dust will be identified using meteorological models. There will be 160 scheduled samplings in 40 patients with chronic HF. Mixed regression models will be used to assess the influence of the concentrations of PM (from the episodes of desert dust) upon the airway inflammation and oxidative stress markers. [Conclusion]: The results of this study will test the hypothesis that exposure to high concentrations of Saharan dust affects the normal function of the respiratory epithelium due to the imbalance between the production of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes, thus causing increased pulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with HF that in turn may facilitate decompensations of their background disease condition.

The objective of this work was to know the environmental conditions under which the current and potential plantations of theA. tequilanacrop are distributed in the Canyon of the Santiago River and specifically the part that includes the agave landscape. La Barranca del Río Santiago es considerada como el lugar de origen de la planta de Agave tequilana y del proceso de elaboración de la bebida que hoy se conoce con el nombre tequila. A partir de lo declarado por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación la Ciencia y la Cultura, el paisaje agavero y las antiguas instalaciones industriales de tequila como patrimonio cultural de la humanidad. La caracterización espacial y temporal de la información climatológica y edáfica disponible para una región en particular permite comprender el tipo de manejo que los agricultores practican sobre sus cultivos, evaluar sus restricciones y posibles efectos en la producción y en el medio ambiente. El objetivo de este trabajo fue conocer las condiciones ambientales bajo las cuales se distribuyen las plantaciones actuales y potenciales del cultivo de A. tequilana en el Cañón del Río Santiago y de manera específica la parte que incluye el paisaje agavero. Se detectó que en la barranca más de 50% de las plantaciones de agave se localizaron en terrenos escarpados sin prácticas de conservación de suelo lo que provoca su pérdida y contaminación con agroquímicos al ecosistema barranqueño, considerado como un atractivo natural a conservar dentro del paisaje agavero.

[Background]: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive technique frequently used to measure the brain hemodynamic activity in applications to evaluate affective disorders and stress. Using two wavelengths of light, it is possible to monitor relative changes in the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin. Besides, the spatial asymmetry in the prefrontal cortex activity has been correlated with the brain response to stressful situations., [Methods]: We measured prefrontal cortex activity with a NIRS multi-distance device during a baseline period, under stressful conditions (e.g., social stress), and after a recovery phase. We calculated a laterality index for the contaminated brain signal and for the brain signal where we removed the influence of extracerebral hemodynamic activity by using a short channel., [Results]: There was a significant right lateralization during stress when using the contaminated signals, consistent with previous investigations, but this significant difference disappeared using the corrected signals. Indeed, exploration of the susceptibility to contamination of the different channels showed non-homogeneous spatial patterns, which would hint at detection of stress from extracerebral activity from the forehead., [Limitations]: There was no recovery phase between the social and the arithmetic stressor, a cumulative effect was not considered., [Conclusions]: Extracerebral hemodynamic activity provided insights into the pertinence of short channel corrections in fNIRS studies dealing with emotions. It is important to consider this issue in clinical applications including modern monitoring systems based on fNIRS technique to assess emotional states in affective disorders.

Five types of reefs are described from the northern and southern parts of the Azrou-Khenifra Basin generated by the interactions of microbes and coral communities. The type 1 microbial reefs grew in both shallow- and deep-water settings, with a strong control by glacioeustasy. Type 2 microbial reefs developed in more tranquil periods, associated with common intermounds, and where only a single major regressive-transgressive sequence is recognised. Type 3 microbial reefs developed in constant deeper water conditions, generated by higher rates of subsidence in the basin, and creating an overall deepening-upward sequence. Type 4 microbial reefs recognised in the northern part of the basin have no clear counterparts in southern outcrops, but they are likely the capping strata observed in the latter area. Rugose corals allow to define a Type 5 reef, unrelated to microbial facies, and are recorded in oolitic-bioclastic backshoals or quiet inner platform settings. The presence of similar reefs in both the northern and southern parts of the basin demonstrates that conditions were not as different as previously proposed, and a lithostratigraphical, environmental uniformity occurs, which permits the analysis of different subsidence rates and glacioeustastic influence. In the Azrou-Khenifra Basin, the reefs, as well as other regional features, suggest that the basin, overall, evolved from an extensional tectonic regime during the early Brigantian into a complex extensional or compressional regime during the early Serpukhovian, passing into a predominantly compressional phase during the late Serpukhovian in a polyphase tectonic inversion during the onset of the Variscan Orogeny in the region.

Ante la crisis climática y material que está sufriendo el mundo contemporáneo aparecen en el ámbito de la arquitectura y construcción las llamadas fachadas adaptativas. Estas siguen la corriente actual de reinvención de materiales tradicionales en pos de integrarlos en dichas fachadas, aprovechando las propiedades intrínsecas de los mismos. Este trabajo de investigación experimental se ha centrado en las láminas de madera y en su capacidad higromórfica. Se ha desarrollado un sistema de revestimiento de fachadas basado en láminas de madera y en su capacidad de curvatura de tres especies (haya, roble y caoba) ante la exposición a idénticos ciclos higrotérmicos. Bajo la hipótesis de una posible regulación de curvatura, la definición del muestreo ha evidenciado que los parámetros ‘Tipo de madera’, ‘grosor’ e ‘Incidencia de vapor de agua’ son las variables responsables de la diferenciación responsiva de las diferentes muestras, así como presencia o no de revestimientos protectores. A continuación, en base a los resultados obtenidos se ha concluido que existen respuestas que permiten destacar el buen comportamiento de la láminas de madera de haya frente a las otras especies, así como la ineficacia de aplicar revestimientos. Como continuación de la investigación, una vez terminada la parte experimental, se establece como objetivo la integración arquitectónica d y a tal fin se ha desarrollado un prototipo como hipotético revestimiento de fachada adaptativa para un caso concreto ubicado en Madrid: Las chimeneas de vapor del Ecobarrio de Vallecas, otorga grandes beneficios estéticos a escala urbana en comparativa con el diseño actual. [Objective] Computer-aided diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aims to provide useful adjunctive indicators to support more accurate and cost-effective clinical decisions. Deep- and machine-learning (ML) techniques are increasingly used to identify neuroimaging-based features for objective assessment of ADHD. Despite promising results in diagnostic prediction, substantial barriers still hamper the translation of the research into daily clinic. Few studies have focused on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data to discriminate ADHD condition at the individual level. This work aims to develop an fNIRS-based methodological approach for effective identification of ADHD boys via technically feasible and explainable methods., [Approach] fNIRS signals recorded from superficial and deep tissue layers of the forehead were collected from 15 clinically referred ADHD boys (average age 11.9 years) and 15 non-ADHD controls during the execution of a rhythmic mental arithmetic task. Synchronization measures in the time-frequency plane were computed to find frequency-specific oscillatory patterns maximally representative of the ADHD or control group. Time series distance-based features were fed into four popular ML linear models (support vector machine, logistic regression (LR), discriminant analysis and naïve Bayes) for binary classification. A 'sequential forward floating selection' wrapper algorithm was adapted to pick out the most discriminative features. Classifiers performance was evaluated through five-fold and leave-one-out cross-validation (CV) and statistical significance by non-parametric resampling procedures., [Main results] LR and linear discriminant analysis achieved accuracy, sensitivity and specificity scores of near 100% (p<.001) for both CV schemes when trained with only three key wrapper-selected features, arising from surface and deep oscillatory components of very low frequency.Significance.We provide preliminary evidence that very-low frequency fNIRS fluctuations induced/modulated by a rhythmic mental task accurately differentiate ADHD boys from non-ADHD controls, outperforming other similar studies. The proposed approach holds promise for finding functional biomarkers reliable and interpretable enough to inform clinical practice.

When the conventional vapor-diffusion techniques of protein crystallization do not yield crystals of sufficient quality, it does not need to lead to hopelessness as well. Instead, we can apply advanced crystallization techniques such as capillary counter-diffusion and micro-seed matrix screening. We applied these methods to problematic proteins whose crystallization by basic methods was not successful. We selected proteins of our interest, whose revealed structure would be beneficial in addition to their use in validation of the advanced crystallization methods as tools for proteins resisting crystallization by more conventional crystallization methods. The protein targets specifically are: 1. Medicinally relevant human enzymes: purine nucleoside phosphorylases (PNP) in complex with inhibitors and cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) 2. A representative of generally difficult-to-crystallize protein-DNA complexes: lactate-utilization repressor (LutR) from Bacillus subtilis in the complex with its DNA operator. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are an important source of cellular damage. When ROS intracellular levels increase, oxidative stress takes place affecting DNA stability and metabolic functions. To prevent these effects, stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs) delay cell cycle progression and induce a transcriptional response that activates antioxidant mechanisms ensuring cell adaptation and survival. Fission yeast Cdc14-like phosphatase Flp1 (also known as Clp1) has a well-established role in cell cycle regulation. Moreover, Flp1 contributes to checkpoint activation during replication stress. Here, we show that Flp1 has a role in fine-tuning the cellular oxidative stress response. Phosphorylation-dependent nucleolar release of Flp1 in response to oxidative stress conditions plays a role in the cellular transcriptional response. Thus, Flp1 ablation increases the transcriptional response to oxidative stress, in both intensity and duration, upregulating both Atf1/Pcr1- and Pap1-dependent stress induced genes. Remarkably, we found that Flp1 interacts with the Atf1/Pcr1 complex with Pcr1 acting as a direct substrate. Our results provide evidence that Flp1 modulates the oxidative stress response by limiting the Atf1/Pcr1-mediated transcription.

Los equipos de investigación de los centros de la Delegación del CSIC en Canarias (IPNA, IEO e IGME) desempeñaron un papel crucial en la erupción de La Palma abordándola desde diferentes perspectivas: tierra, mar y aire. Su misión: entender el comportamiento del volcán y proporcionar información valiosa a las autoridades locales y equipos de emergencias para la toma de decisiones en gestión de desastres y protección de la población. Con idea de visibilizar este trabajo, esta labor se plasmó en una exposición 360° que es un testimonio poderoso de cómo la colaboración científica puede iluminar fenómenos naturales y su impacto en nuestra comunidad.

Understanding the process of New Particle Formation (NPF) can help us both to protect human health and to fight climate change. On the one hand, nanometric particles can enter the lungs and penetrate into the blood circulation and cross the blood-brain barrier. On the other hand, they can act as cloud condensation nuclei, thus altering the properties and distribution of clouds, and interact with the solar radiation. Despite recent advances in the instrumentation to detect newly formed particles, the mechanism of NPF and the participating precursors are still under investigation, especially at high-altitude and mountain sites reaching the free troposphere. In fact, not only the instrument maintenance is complicated by the low atmospheric pressure there, but also the identification of the NPF events may be challenging due to the complex local topography affecting the spatial extent of the phenomenon. For example, changes of air mass can occur during daytime due to the transport of gases and particles from the lower altitude. To investigate NPF in marine free troposphere, we performed a three-month long measurement campaign between April 2nd, 2022, and June 27th, 2022, at the high-altitude mountain station of Izaña (2367 m a.s.l.), on the island of Tenerife, Spain. The observations included high time resolution size distribution measurements of particles with a diameter between 1.2 nm and 533 nm and of atmospheric ions with a diameter between 0.8 nm and 38 nm, which were detected using a Neutral cluster and Air Ion Spectrometer (NAIS), a nano-Condensation Nucleus Counter (nCNC), and a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). After classifying the daily aerosol size distribution data into NPF events and non-events, the influence of the boundary layer dynamics to the process was explored. Bryozoan fauna from the Lower Devonian (Pragian–Emsian) deposits of the Ossa-Morena Zone (SW Spain) comprises twenty-eight species: one cyclostome, two cystoporates, sixteen trepostomes, five cryptostomes, and four fenestrates. Three new genera with one new species, respectively, are described: cyclostome Diploclemella serenensis n. gen. n. sp., trepostome Cordobella tenuis n. gen. n. sp., and cryptostome (rhabdomesine) Serenella dubia n. gen. n. sp. Three trepostome species are new: Leptot-rypa parva n. sp., L. modesta n. sp., and Boardmanella spinigera n. sp. Ten species are described in open nomenclature. The studied bryozoan fauna shows high morphological and taxonomical diversity, comprising mostly species of moderate size. The assemblage is clearly dominated by branched ramose and encrusting growth forms. The studied bryozoan fauna shows some distinct palaeobiogeographic relations to the bryozoans from the Lower Devonian of NW Spain, Morocco, and Czech Republic.

Representatives of the subfamily Lonsdaleiinae Chapman, 1893 are common in the Mississippian of the western Palaeotethys. A general analysis of the origin, distribution and evolution of that subfamily has been undertaken. The most probable hypothesis for the origin of the genus Lonsdaleia McCoy, 1849 is to acquire colonialism via the genus Axophyllum Milne Edwards and Haime, 1851. Actinocyathus d'Orbigny, 1849 would be a descendant of Lonsdaleia by increasing integration in the colonies. The first occurrences of Lonsdaleia have been recorded in the lower Visean from northern Britain and northern Tianshan Mountains of northwestern China, but the diversification and migration to the whole Palaeotethys only happened in the late Visean. Three hypotheses are proposed on that matter. The Serpukhovian was also a period of migrations and diversification for these genera. Both Lonsdaleia and Actinocyathus have been recorded in Bashkirian refuges, the Sverdrup Basin in northern Laurasia and the Tindouf Basin in northern Africa, respectively. The division of the western Palaeotethys into six subprovinces based on the distribution of corals is proposed.

This file contains data of aerosol PMx concentrations measured in Cape Verde (islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente) in October 2019 in the frame of the project VARDUSTSAL (PGC2018-099166-B-100; IP: Sergio Rodríguez) funded by the State Research Agency, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain and the European Regional Development Fund. Data of vertical distributions and transfects of PMx near sources and in ambient air (including remote conditions) are reported. Details are provided in Rodríguez & López-Darias (2021).

This dataset contains observations of chemical composition of PM10 airborne particles during February 2020 at El Rio site (Tenerife, Canary Islands, 28.145140oN, 16.523732oW, 500 meters above sea level), including the period 22-24 February, when the Canary Islands were impacted by a severe dust storm. Elemental composition was determined by IPC-OES and IPC-MS (after acid HNO3 : HF : HClO4 digestion), ions and cations by ion chromatography (after leaching in ultrasound bath) and elemental and organic carbon by Thermo-Optical Transmittance.

Ni/CeO2 catalysts are very active and selective for total hydrogenation of CO2 to methane, but the nature of the active sites is still unclear. The surface of a Ni/CeO2 catalyst has been monitored under CO2 methanation conditions by Near Ambient Pressure-XPS (NAP-XPS) using synchrotron radiation, and has been concluded that the species involved in the redox processes taking place during the CO2 methanation mechanism are the Ni2+-CeO2/Ni0 and Ce4+/Ce3+ pairs. In addition, a small fraction of nickel is present on the catalyst surface forming NiO and Ni2+-carbonates/hydroxyls (around 20% of the total surface nickel), but these species do not participate in the redox processes of the methanation mechanism. Under CO2 methanation conditions the H2 reduction rate of the Ni2+-CeO2/Ni0 and Ce4+/Ce3+ couples is much faster than their CO2 reoxidation rate (2 times faster, at least, at 300ºC), but a certain proportion of nickel always remains oxidized under reaction conditions. The high activity of Ni/CeO2 catalysts for CO2 methanation is tentatively attributed to the simultaneous presence of Ni2+-CeO2 and Ni0 active sites where CO2 and H2 are expected to be efficiently dissociated, respectively.

Nicotiana tabacum L., is a crop of economic importance as an exportable product in Cuba and its plantations can be significantly affected by the phytopathogen Fusarium spp. Objective. The objective was to characterize culturally and morphometrically the Fusarium species associated with N. tabacum. Materials and methods. Samples of plants with vascular affectations, wilting, chlorosis and necrosis in stems and leaves were collected in areas specialized in tobacco production in the Cuban province of Granma. From the analyzed plant tissues, 9 isolates were obtained in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium, which were purified by monosporic cultures. PDA, Carnation Leafpiece Agar (CLA), Spezieller Nährstoffarmer Agar (SNA) and Nutrient Agar (AN) media were used for cultural-morphometric characterization on the basis of qualitative and quantitative traits. A completely randomized design was used and statistical processing was performed using factorial ANOVA and Tukey’s test, processed with InfoStat 2008. Results. The results confirmed the existence of 9 isolates of Fusarium, of them, 5 of F. oxysporum and 4 of F. phyllophylum. The combined culturalmorphometric characterization demonstrated greater variability of pigmentation in PDA medium in both Fusarium species and evidenced inter and intraspecific differentiation in the formation of microscopic structures, verifying macroconidia with a size of 8.17-33.35 x 1.45- 6.30 µm in F. oxysporum and 6.68-20.10 x 1.42- 4.67 µm in F. phyllophylum. Conclusions. Nine Fusarium spp. Isolates (5 from F. oxysporum and 4 from F. phyllophylum) are efficiently characterized by the combined culturalmorphometric method and the selectivity of these 2 species for N. tabacum is demonstrated, Nicotiana tabacum L., es un cultivo de importancia económica como producto exportable en Cuba y sus plantaciones pueden ser afectadas significativamente por el fitopatógeno Fusarium spp. Objetivo. El objetivo fue caracterizar cultural y morfométricamente las especies de Fusarium asociadas a N. tabacum. Materiales y métodos. Se colectaron muestras de plantas con afectaciones vasculares, marchitamiento, clorosis y necrosis en tallos y hojas en áreas especializadas en la producción tabacalera en la provincia cubana de Granma. A partir de los tejidos vegetales analizados se obtuvieron 9 aislados en medio Papa Dextrosa Agar (PDA), que se purificaron con cultivos monospóricos. Se utilizaron lo medios PDA, Carnatio n Leafpiece Agar (CLA), Spezieller Nährstoffarmer Agar (SNA) y Agar Nutriente (AN) para la caracterización cultural-morfométrica sobre la base de caracteres cualitativos y cuantitativos. Se utilizó un diseño completamente aleatorizado y el procesamiento estadístico se realizó mediante un ANOVA factorial y la prueba de Tukey, procesado con InfoStat 2008. Resultados. Los resultados confirmaron la existencia de 9 aislados de Fusarium, de ellos, 5 de F. oxysporum y 4 de F. phyllophylum. La caracterización combinada cultural-morfométrica demostró una mayor variabilidad de la pigmentación en medio PDA en ambas especies de Fusarium y evidenció diferenciación inter e intraespecífica en la formación de estructuras microscópicas, constatándose macroconidios con una talla de 8,17-33,35 x 1,45-6,30 µm en F. oxysporum y de 6,68-20,10 x 1,42-4,67 µm en F. phyllophylum. Conclusiones. Se caracterizan eficazmente por el método combinado cultural-morfométrico 9 aislados de Fusarium spp., (5 de F. oxysporum y 4 de F. phyllophylum) y se pone de manifiesto la selectividad de estas 2 especies por N. tabacum.

For this aim, it is exposed, in the first place, how the Cartesian theory of mental representations give an account of the delusions and perceptual hallucinations of the madmen. Thus, Descartes's analysis of phrenitis and lethargy is presented, delving into the Cartesian theory of memory., El presente artículo reconstruye la explicación que Descartes ofrece sobre dos enfermedades de la mente conocidas en el siglo XVII: la frenitis y la letargia. Para ello, se expone, en primer lugar, cómo la teoría cartesiana de las representaciones mentales permite dar cuenta de los delirios y alucinaciones perceptivas de los locos. Posteriormente, se reconstruye el análisis de Descartes de la frenitis y la letargia, ahondando, en este último caso, en la teoría cartesiana de la memoria.

En los últimos años, la energía solar fotovoltaica ha experimentado un importante crecimiento debido a la necesidad de electricidad a partir de energía limpia. Gracias al avance de la tecnología y reducción de precios, ocupa el tercer lugar en generación de energía a partir de fuentes renovables en España. El objetivo del presente proyecto es diseñar una instalación solar fotovoltaica en un municipio de Castilla y León, que permita un autoconsumo colectivo tanto en edificios municipales como particulares. This paper analyzes the strategies performed by Descartes in order to «disenchant the world» for removing the hermetic elements from the Cartesian scientific explanations and subjecting all the natural phenomena to our control. To do this, I appeal to the distinction between causal elements —occult qualities— and their effects —admirable virtues— as the two dimensions that must be incorporated under the scientific explanations to ensure the calculation of phenomena and their mastery., Este artículo analiza las estrategias utilizadas por Descartes para «desencantar el mundo», a fin de suprimir los elementos herméticos de las explicaciones científicas cartesianas y someter todos los fenómenos naturales a nuestro control. Para ello, apelo a la distinción entre elementos causales —cualidades ocultas— y sus efectos —efectos admirables— como las dos dimensiones que deben ser incorporadas bajo las explicaciones científicas para garantizar el cálculo de los fenómenos y su dominio.

This paper reconstructs the explanation that Descartes offers about two diseases of the mind known in the seventeenth century: phrenitis and lethargy. For this aim, it is exposed, in the first place, how the Cartesian theory of mental representations give an account of the delusions and perceptual hallucinations of the madmen. Thus, Descartes's analysis of phrenitis and lethargy is presented, delving into the Cartesian theory of memory., El presente artículo reconstruye la explicación que Descartes ofrece sobre dos enfermedades de la mente conocidas en el siglo XVII: la frenitis y la letargia. Para ello, se expone, en primer lugar, cómo la teoría cartesiana de las representaciones mentales permite dar cuenta de los delirios y alucinaciones perceptivas de los locos. Posteriormente, se reconstruye el análisis de Descartes de la frenitis y la letargia, ahondando, en este último caso, en la teoría cartesiana de la memoria.

Los aceites esenciales son una mezcla compleja de más de 100 componentes, cuya función es crucial en la supervivencia de las plantas, ya que, por un lado, atraen a determinados insectos que participan en su polinización y, por el otro lado, debido a su olor, ahuyentan a otros animales depredadores. Gracias a su variedad química, se les han atribuido un gran número de actividades biológicas que han sido aprovechadas en la industria cosmética, alimentaria y farmacéutica. El presente trabajo aborda los aceites esenciales como productos naturales bioactivos, las técnicas más comunes para su extracción y sus principales aplicaciones en el área biológica.

Dentro del presente documento, se pueden apreciar las diversas teorías, que sustentan el proceso mismo de internacionalización, que permiten comprender, desde una perspectiva académica, a ruta en la que está inmersa la compañía Típicas empanadas, en el momento de incursionar en el mercado internacional. Por otra parte, se estudia el potencial del mercado de los fritos, específicamente el empanado en el mercado interno y el desempeño de la compañía en los últimos años, su recorrido y posicionamiento como marca colombiana. Donde presento un crecimiento en desarrollo y tecnología capaz de responder he incursionar en un mercado potencial en el exterior, representando la cultura colombiana y latinoamericana, así mismo se analizó específicamente su oferta y demanda frente a la competencia directa e indirecta, reconociendo sus aspectos diferenciales frente a los mismos. Se desarrollo una ruta de exportación en la que se tuvo en cuenta la cercanía del país, al ser un producto alimenticio, de igual forma, el tiempo en trayecto y la Logistica del mismo con este tipo de productos; este análisis inicio principalmente al estudiar al consumidor final, los gustos al momento de comer, rango de precios dispuestos a pagar y rango de edades al que se podía llegar con este producto; analizando del mismo modo el aspecto legal no solo para su embalaje y empaque sino también las condiciones para su conservación como lo son las prohibiciones de aditivos y sustancias para su conservación. .

It seems that music has the ability to isolate some people from their surroundings and capture their full attention, a phenomenon known as absorption. It is advisable to measure this personal characteristic before using music in the classroom, as it is especially used to support complex academic tasks. This study has measured the psychometric properties of the AIMS music absorption scale, as well as the absorption levels in a convenience sample of 388 Education students. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted. A descriptive statistics analysis and contrast analysis based on sex and prior music knowledge were carried out. The results reveal two latent factors, one linked to an altered state of consciousness and another to kinaesthetic experiences. The sample presents medium and high levels in both dimensions. No differences between sex or music knowledge were found., En algunas personas, la música parece ejercer la capacidad de aislarlos de su entorno y captar toda su atención. La medición de esta característica de la persona es aconsejable antes de utilizar la música en el aula, sobre todo se usa para apoyar tareas académicas complejas. Esta investigación ha medido las propiedades psicométricas de la escala AIMS de absorción a la música, así como sus niveles en una muestra incidental de 388 estudiantes de Educación. Se aplicó un análisis factorial exploratorio. Se realizó un análisis de estadísticos descriptivos y los contrastes en función del sexo, así como de saber o no música. Los resultados muestran dos factores latentes vinculados con un estado alterado de conciencia, y otro con experiencias cinestésicas. La muestra presenta niveles medios y altos en ambas dimensiones. No se encontraron diferencias entre sexos ni conocimiento musical.
