Both the operational phase and embodied emissions that are introduced during the construction phase through the manufacture, sourcing, and installation of the building's materials and components are significant contributors to carbon emissions from the built environment. It is essential to change the current design and (re)construction processes in order to achieve the energy-saving targets for the EU building stock and move toward a society that is net carbon neutral. This change must be made from both a technical perspective as well as from a methodological perspective. To accomplish this, the EU has suggested several regulations and legislative steps to phase out inefficient structures. The most recent of these initiatives propose the idea of a Digital Building Logbook, which serves as a central repository for all pertinent building data, including information on energy efficiency. In this work, we present a survey of the elements that have been taken into consideration for the creation of the Digital Building Logbook to give an overview of what research has been done so far.

In reinforcement learning (RL) an agent usually learns the specifics and rules of the environment via interaction. This limits the agent in taking the best action only from the current observation and past experience. Therefore, providing relevant external knowledge for RL agents, as well as incorporating learned knowledge in the RL process can be a critical part of agent’s successful training in real-world tasks. We propose a method, an architecture and experimental results for injecting expert knowledge in the form of RDF knowledge graphs (KGs) into the RL processes, showing how knowledge consumption increases sample efficiency. Furthermore, we investigate the scalability of our approach concerning the complexity of the underlying task showing injection of KGs is beneficial to the solution of more complex RL tasks. For experimental evaluation we used the Minigrid environment, which is a standard benchmark for RL. For this environment, we designed an ontology and generated a KG, that promotes reusability and interoperability across heterogeneous data of the environment. We show that adding knowledge to the agent’s learning process improves sample efficiency and the benefits increase with the complexity of the environment.

The crucial task of analysing the complex dynamics of the research landscape and uncovering the latest insights from the scientific literature is of paramount importance to researchers, governments, and commercial organizations. Springer Nature, one of the leading academic publishers worldwide, plays a significant role in this domain and regularly integrates and processes a variety of data sources to inform strategic decisions. Since exploring the resulting data is a challenging task, in 2021 we developed AIDA-Bot, a chatbot that addresses inquiries about the research landscape by utilising a large-scale knowledge graph of scholarly data. This paper presents the novel AIDA-Bot 2.0, which can both 1) support a set of predetermined question types by automatically translating them to formal queries on the knowledge graph, and 2) answer open questions by summarising information from relevant articles. We evaluated the performance of AIDA-Bot 2.0 through a comparative assessment against alternative architectures and an extensive user study. The results indicate that the novel features provide more accurate information and an excellent user experience.

However, words' sentiment orientations and strengths often change throughout various contexts in which the words appear. In this paper, we propose a lexicon adaptation approach that uses the contextual semantics of words to capture their contexts in tweet messages and update their prior sentiment orientations and/or strengths accordingly. We evaluate our approach on one state-of-the-art sentiment lexicon using three different Twitter datasets. Numerous methods and pipelines have recently emerged for the automatic extraction of knowledge graphs from documents such as scientific publications and patents. However, adapting these methods to incorporate alternative text sources like micro-blogging posts and news has proven challenging as they struggle to model open-domain entities and relations, typically found in these sources. In this paper, we propose an enhanced information extraction pipeline tailored to the extraction of a knowledge graph comprising open-domain entities from micro-blogging posts on social media platforms. Our pipeline leverages dependency parsing and classifies entity relations in an unsupervised manner through hierarchical clustering over word embeddings. We provide a use case on extracting semantic triples from a corpus of 100 thousand tweets about digital transformation and publicly release the generated knowledge graph. On the same dataset, we conduct two experimental evaluations, showing that the system produces triples with precision over 95% and outperforms similar pipelines of around 5% in terms of precision, while generating a comparatively higher number of triples.

Focusing on media sources from the United States and the United Kingdom, the study utilizes the Dow Jones News Article dataset for a comprehensive analysis focused on the environmental domain. The research introduces an innovative information extraction technique, transforming extracted data into a knowledge graph. Key findings highlight recent trends in ESG aspects, with a notable emphasis on climate change, renewable energy sources, and biodiversity conservation in the environmental dimension.

In recent years, the significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance criteria in assessing financial investments has grown significantly. This paper presents an AI-driven analysis of ESG concepts and their evolution from 1980 to 2022, with a specific focus on media sources from the United States and the United Kingdom. The primary data source utilized is the Dow Jones News Article dataset, providing a comprehensive and high-quality collection of news articles. The study introduces a novel technique for information extraction from news articles, involving the structuring of extracted data into a knowledge graph. The findings identified key trends associated with ESG aspects emerging in recent years. In the environmental dimension, we identified pronounced emphasis on climate change, renewable energy sources, and biodiversity conservation. Within the social aspect, the analysis pointed out the increasing significance of issues such as racism, gender identity, human rights as well all the increasing role of charities, and the ethical challenges of modern supply chains. Finally, in the governance domain, the findings emphasized issues related to corporate governance accountability, workplace ethics, and the conduct and remuneration of executives.

In recent years, transformer-based models have emerged as powerful tools for natural language processing tasks, demonstrating remarkable performance in several domains. However, they still present significant limitations. These shortcomings become more noticeable when dealing with highly specific and complex concepts, particularly within the scientific domain. For example, transformer models have particular difficulties when processing scientific articles due to the domain-specific terminologies and sophisticated ideas often encountered in scientific literature. To overcome these challenges and further enhance the effectiveness of transformers in specific fields, researchers have turned their attention to the concept of knowledge injection. Knowledge injection is the process of incorporating outside knowledge into transformer models to improve their performance on certain tasks. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of knowledge injection strategies for transformers within the scientific domain. Specifically, we provide a detailed overview and comparative assessment of four primary methodologies, evaluating their efficacy in the task of classifying scientific articles. For this purpose, we constructed a new benchmark including both 24K labelled papers and a knowledge graph of 9.2K triples describing pertinent research topics. We also developed a full codebase to easily re-implement all knowledge injection strategies in different domains. A formal evaluation indicates that the majority of the proposed knowledge injection methodologies significantly outperform the baseline established by Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers.

Academia and industry share a complex, multifaceted, and symbiotic relationship. Analysing the knowledge flow between them, understanding which directions have the biggest potential, and discovering the best strategies to harmonise their efforts is a critical task for several stakeholders. Research publications and patents are an ideal medium to analyze this space, but current datasets of scholarly data cannot be used for such a purpose since they lack a high-quality characterization of the relevant research topics and industrial sectors. In this paper, we introduce the Academia/Industry DynAmics (AIDA) Knowledge Graph, which describes 21M publications and 8M patents according to the research topics drawn from the Computer Science Ontology. 5.1M publications and 5.6M patents are further characterized according to the type of the author's affiliations and 66 industrial sectors from the proposed Industrial Sectors Ontology (INDUSO). AIDA was generated by an automatic pipeline that integrates data from Microsoft Academic Graph, Dimensions, DBpedia, the Computer Science Ontology, and the Global Research Identifier Database. It is publicly available under CC BY 4.0 and can be downloaded as a dump or queried via a triplestore. We evaluated the different parts of the generation pipeline on a manually crafted gold standard yielding competitive results.

Chatbots have become increasingly popular in the last years among both businesses and consumers. These conversational agents typically use natural language understanding technologies for reformulating questions as queries to a knowledge base and answer the user according to the resulting information. This demo paper proposes a general software architecture for chatbots that can be employed for exploring large-scale knowledge graphs of scholarly data. It also introduces AIDA-Bot, a working prototype that implements this architecture and can answer queries about scientific publications, research topics, researchers, universities, and conferences. In order to show the flexibility of the proposed solution, we implemented two versions of AIDA-Bot which can run, respectively, on Alexa devices and web browsers.

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are widely used for modeling scholarly communication, performing scientometric analyses, and supporting a variety of intelligent services to explore the literature and predict research dynamics. However, they often suffer from incompleteness (e.g., missing affiliations, references, research topics), leading to a reduced scope and quality of the resulting analyses. This issue is usually tackled by computing knowledge graph embeddings (KGEs) and applying link prediction techniques. However, only a few KGE models are capable of taking weights of facts in the knowledge graph into account. Such weights can have different meanings, e.g. describe the degree of association or the degree of truth of a certain triple. In this paper, we propose the Weighted Triple Loss, a new loss function for KGE models that takes full advantage of the additional numerical weights on facts and it is even tolerant to incorrect weights. We also extend the Rule Loss, a loss function that is able to exploit a set of logical rules, in order to work with weighted triples. The evaluation of our solutions on several knowledge graphs indicates significant performance improvements with respect to the state of the art. Our main use case is the large-scale AIDA knowledge graph, which describes 21 million research articles. Our approach enables to complete information about affiliation types, countries, and research topics, greatly improving the scope of the resulting scientometrics analyses and providing better support to systems for monitoring and predicting research dynamics.

The continuous growth of scientific literature brings innovations and, at the same time, raises new challenges. One of them is related to the fact that its analysis has become difficult due to the high volume of published papers for which manual effort for annotations and management is required. Novel technological infrastructures are needed to help researchers, research policy makers, and companies to time-efficiently browse, analyse, and forecast scientific research. Knowledge graphs i.e., large networks of entities and relationships, have proved to be effective solution in this space. Scientific knowledge graphs focus on the scholarly domain and typically contain metadata describing research publications such as authors, venues, organizations, research topics, and citations. However, the current generation of knowledge graphs lacks of an explicit representation of the knowledge presented in the research papers. As such, in this paper, we present a new architecture that takes advantage of Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning methods for extracting entities and relationships from research publications and integrates them in a large-scale knowledge graph. Within this research work, we i) tackle the challenge of knowledge extraction by employing several state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing and Text Mining tools, ii) describe an approach for integrating entities and relationships generated by these tools, iii) show the advantage of such an hybrid system over alternative approaches, and vi) as a chosen use case, we generated a scientific knowledge graph including 109,105 triples, extracted from 26,827 abstracts of papers within the Semantic Web domain. As our approach is general and can be applied to any domain, we expect that it can facilitate the management, analysis, dissemination, and processing of scientific knowledge.

Scientific knowledge has been traditionally disseminated and preserved through research articles published in journals, conference proceedings, and online archives. However, this article-centric paradigm has been often criticized for not allowing to automatically process, categorize, and reason on this knowledge. An alternative vision is to generate a semantically rich and interlinked description of the content of research publications. In this paper, we present the Artificial Intelligence Knowledge Graph (AI-KG), a large-scale automatically generated knowledge graph that describes 820K research entities. AI-KG includes about 14M RDF triples and 1.2M reified statements extracted from 333K research publications in the field of AI, and describes 5 types of entities (tasks, methods, metrics, materials, others) linked by 27 relations. AI-KG has been designed to support a variety of intelligent services for analyzing and making sense of research dynamics, supporting researchers in their daily job, and helping to inform decision-making in funding bodies and research policymakers. AI-KG has been generated by applying an automatic pipeline that extracts entities and relationships using three tools:DyGIE++, Stanford CoreNLP, and the CSO Classifier. It then integrates and filters the resulting triples using a combination of deep learning and semantic technologies in order to produce a high-quality knowledge graph. This pipeline was evaluated on a manually crafted gold standard, yielding competitive results. AI-KG is available under CC BY 4.0 and can be downloaded as a dump or queried via a SPARQL endpoint.

Scientific conferences play a crucial role in the field of Computer Science by promoting the cross-pollination of ideas and technologies, fostering new collaborations, shaping scientific communities, and connecting research efforts from academia and industry. However, current systems for analysing research data do not provide a good representation of conferences. Specifically, these solutions do not allow to track research trends, to compare conferences in similar fields, and to analyse the involvement of industrial sectors. In order to address these limitations, we developed the AIDA Dashboard, a tool for exploring and making sense of scientific conferences which integrates statistical analysis, semantic technologies, and visual analytics.

Academia and industry are constantly engaged in a joint effort for producing scientific knowledge that will shape the society of the future. Analysing the knowledge flow between them and understanding how they influence each other is a critical task for researchers, governments, funding bodies, investors, and companies. However, current corpora are unfit to support large-scale analysis of the knowledge flow between academia and industry since they lack of a good characterization of research topics and industrial sectors. In this short paper, we introduce the Academia/Industry DynAmics (AIDA) Knowledge Graph, which characterizes 14M papers and 8M patents according to the research topics drawn from the Computer Science Ontology. 4M papers and 5M patents are also classified according to the type of the author's affiliations (academy, industry, or collaborative) and 66 industrial sectors (e.g., automotive, financial, energy, electronics) obtained from DBpedia. AIDA was generated by an automatic pipeline that integrates several knowledge graphs and bibliographic corpora, including Microsoft Academic Graph, Dimensions, English DBpedia, the Computer Science Ontology, and the Global Research Identifier Database.

Analysing the relationship between academia and industry allows us to understand how the knowledge produced by the universities is being adopted and enriched by the industrial sector, and ultimately affects society through the release of relevant products and services. In this paper, we present a preliminary approach to assess and compare the research outputs of academia and industry. This solution integrates data from several knowledge graphs describing scientific articles (Microsoft Academics Graph), research topics (Computer Science Ontology), organizations (Global Research Identifier Database), and types of industry (DBpedia). We focus on the Semantic Web as exemplary field and report several insights regarding the different behaviours of academia and industry, and the types of industries most active in this field.

Data lakes are repositories of data stored in natural/raw format. A data lake may include structured data from relational databases, semi-structured data (i.e., JSON, CSV), unstructured data (i.e., text data), or binary data (i.e., images, audio, video). It is usually built on top of cost-efficient infrastructures such as Hadoop, Amazon S3, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, etc. Several organisations rely on big data lakes for crucial tasks such as reporting, visualisation, advanced analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence. A major limitation of this solution is that without descriptive metadata and a mechanism to maintain it, such data tend to be noisy, making their management and analysis complex and time-consuming. Therefore, there is the need to add a semantic layer based on a formal ontology to describe the data and efficient mechanism to represent them as a knowledge graph. In this paper, we present a methodology to add a semantic layer to a data lake and thus obtain a knowledge graph that can support structured queries and advanced data exploration. We describe a practical implementation of a methodology applied to a data lake consisting of text data describing the online marketplace for lodging and tourism activities. We report statistics about the data lake and the resulting knowledge graph.

Scientific conferences are essential for developing active research communities, promoting the cross-pollination of ideas and technologies, bridging between academia and industry, and disseminating new findings. Analyzing and monitoring scientific conferences is thus crucial for all users who need to take informed decisions in this space. However, scholarly search engines and bibliometric applications only provide a limited set of analytics for assessing research conferences, preventing us from performing a comprehensive analysis of these events. In this paper, we introduce the AIDA Dashboard, a novel web application, developed in collaboration with Springer Nature, for analyzing and comparing scientific conferences. This tool introduces three major new features: 1) it enables users to easily compare conferences within specific fields (e.g., Digital Libraries) and time-frames (e.g., the last five years), 2) it characterises conferences according to a 14K research topics from the Computer Science Ontology (CSO), and 3) it provides several functionalities for assessing the involvement of commercial organizations, including the ability to characterize industrial contributions according to 66 industrial sectors (e.g., automotive, financial, energy, electronics) from the Industrial Sectors Ontology (INDUSO). We evaluated the AIDA Dashboard by performing both a quantitative evaluation and a user study, obtaining excellent results in terms of quality of the analytics and usability.

Concurrently, recent advancements in Natural Language Processing, particularly large language models, have made substantial strides in capturing the complexity of human language. Simultaneously, knowledge graphs have become a formidable instrument for structuring and categorizing information. This paper introduces a cutting-edge deep learning methodology integrating large language models with domain-specific knowledge graphs to classify tourism offers. It aims at aiding hospitality operators in understanding their accommodation offerings’ market positioning, taking into account the visit propensity and user review ratings, with the goal of optimizing the offers themselves and enhancing their appeal. Comparative analysis against alternative methods on two datasets of London accommodation offers attests to our approach’s effectiveness, demonstrating superior results.

In scientific papers, it is common practice to cite other articles to substantiate claims, provide evidence for factual assertions, reference limitations, and research gaps, and fulfill various other purposes. When authors include a citation in a given sentence, there are two considerations they need to take into account: (i) where in the sentence to place the citation and (ii) which citation to choose to support the underlying claim. In this paper, we focus on the first task as it allows multiple potential approaches that rely on the researcher’s individual style and the specific norms and conventions of the relevant scientific community. We propose two automatic methodologies that leverage transformers architecture for either solving a Mask-Filling problem or a Named Entity Recognition problem. On top of the results of the proposed methodologies, we apply ad-hoc Natural Language Processing heuristics to further improve their outcome. We also introduce s2orc-9K, an open dataset for fine-tuning models on this task. A formal evaluation demonstrates that the generative approach significantly outperforms five alternative methods when fine-tuned on the novel dataset. Furthermore, this model’s results show no statistically significant deviation from the outputs of three senior researchers.

The tourism and hospitality sectors have become increasingly important in the last few years and the companies operating in this field are constantly challenged with providing new innovative services. At the same time, (big-) data has become the “new oil” of this century and Knowledge Graphs are emerging as the most natural way to collect, refine, and structure this heterogeneous information. In this paper, we present a methodology for semi-automatic generating a Tourism Knowledge Graph (TKG), which can be used for supporting a variety of intelligent services in this space, and a new ontology for modelling this domain, the Tourism Analytics Ontology (TAO). Our approach processes and integrates data from Booking.com, Airbnb, DBpedia, and GeoNames. Due to its modular structure, it can be easily extended to include new data sources or to apply new enrichment and refinement functions. We report a comprehensive evaluation of the functional, logical, and structural dimensions of TKG and TAO.

In the last few years, chatbots have become mainstream solutions adopted in a variety of domains for automatizing communication at scale. In the same period, knowledge graphs have attracted significant attention from business and academia as robust and scalable representations of information. In the scientific and academic research domain, they are increasingly used to illustrate the relevant actors (e.g., researchers, institutions), documents (e.g., articles, patents), entities (e.g., concepts, innovations), and other related information. Following the same direction, this paper describes how to integrate conversational agents with knowledge graphs focused on the scholarly domain, a.k.a. Scientific Knowledge Graphs. On top of the proposed architecture, we developed AIDA-Bot, a simple chatbot that leverages a large-scale knowledge graph of scholarly data. AIDA-Bot can answer natural language questions about scientific articles, research concepts, researchers, institutions, and research venues. We have developed four prototypes of AIDA-Bot on Alexa products, web browsers, Telegram clients, and humanoid robots. We performed a user study evaluation with 15 domain experts showing a high level of interest and engagement with the proposed agent.

Knowledge graphs (KG) are large network of entities and relationships, tipically expressed as RDF triples, relevant to a specific domain or an organization. Scientific Knowledge Graphs (SKGs) focus on the scholarly domain and typically contain metadata describing research publications such as authors, venues, organizations, research topics, and citations. The next big challenge in this field regards the generation of SKGs that also contain a explicit representation of the knowledge presented in research publications. In this paper, we present a preliminary approach that uses a set of NLP and Deep Learning methods for extracting entities and relationships from research publications and then integrates them in a KG. More specifically, we i) tackle the challenge of knowledge extraction by employing several state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing and Text Mining tools, ii) describe an approach for integrating entities and relationships generated by these tools, iii) analyse an automatically generated Knowledge Graph including 10, 425 entities and 25, 655 relationships derived from 12, 007 publications in the field of Semantic Web, and iv) discuss how Deep Learning methods can be applied to overcome some limitations of the current techniques.

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are widely used for modeling scholarly communication, performing scientometric analyses, and supporting a variety of intelligent services to explore the literature and predict research dynamics. However, they often suffer from incompleteness (e.g., missing affiliations, references, research topics), leading to a reduced scope and quality of the resulting analyses. This issue is usually tackled by computing knowledge graph embeddings (KGEs) and applying link prediction techniques. However, only a few KGE models are capable of taking weights of facts in the knowledge graph into account. Such weights can have different meanings, e.g. describe the degree of association or the degree of truth of a certain triple. In this paper, we propose the Weighted Triple Loss, a new loss function for KGE models that takes full advantage of the additional numerical weights on facts and it is even tolerant to incorrect weights. We also extend the Rule Loss, a loss function that is able to exploit a set of logical rules, in order to work with weighted triples. The evaluation of our solutions on several knowledge graphs indicates significant performance improvements with respect to the state of the art. Our main use case is the large-scale AIDA knowledge graph, which describes 21 million research articles. Our approach enables to complete information about affiliation types, countries, and research topics, greatly improving the scope of the resulting scientometrics analyses and providing better support to systems for monitoring and predicting research dynamics.

Chatbots have become increasingly popular in the last years among both businesses and consumers. These conversational agents typically use natural language understanding technologies for reformulating questions as queries to a knowledge base and answer the user according to the resulting information. This demo paper proposes a general software architecture for chatbots that can be employed for exploring large-scale knowledge graphs of scholarly data. It also introduces AIDA-Bot, a working prototype that implements this architecture and can answer queries about scientific publications, research topics, researchers, universities, and conferences. In order to show the flexibility of the proposed solution, we implemented two versions of AIDA-Bot which can run, respectively, on Alexa devices and web browsers.

The continuous growth of scientific literature brings innovations and, at the same time, raises new challenges. One of them is related to the fact that its analysis has become difficult due to the high volume of published papers for which manual effort for annotations and management is required. Novel technological infrastructures are needed to help researchers, research policy makers, and companies to time-efficiently browse, analyse, and forecast scientific research. Knowledge graphs i.e., large networks of entities and relationships, have proved to be effective solution in this space. Scientific knowledge graphs focus on the scholarly domain and typically contain metadata describing research publications such as authors, venues, organizations, research topics, and citations. However, the current generation of knowledge graphs lacks of an explicit representation of the knowledge presented in the research papers. As such, in this paper, we present a new architecture that takes advantage of Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning methods for extracting entities and relationships from research publications and integrates them in a large-scale knowledge graph. Within this research work, we i) tackle the challenge of knowledge extraction by employing several state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing and Text Mining tools, ii) describe an approach for integrating entities and relationships generated by these tools, iii) show the advantage of such an hybrid system over alternative approaches, and vi) as a chosen use case, we generated a scientific knowledge graph including 109,105 triples, extracted from 26,827 abstracts of papers within the Semantic Web domain. As our approach is general and can be applied to any domain, we expect that it can facilitate the management, analysis, dissemination, and processing of scientific knowledge.

In recent years, we saw the emergence of several approaches for producing machine-readable, semantically rich, interlinked descriptions of the content of research publications, typically encoded as knowledge graphs. A common limitation of these solutions is that they address a low number of articles, either because they rely on human experts to summarize information from the literature or because they focus on specific research areas. In this paper, we introduce the Computer Science Knowledge Graph (CS-KG), a large-scale knowledge graph composed by over 350M RDF triples describing 41M statements from 6.7M articles about 10M entities linked by 179 semantic relations. It was automatically generated and will be periodically updated by applying an information extraction pipeline on a large repository of research papers. CS-KG is much larger than all comparable solutions and offers a very comprehensive representation of tasks, methods, materials, and metrics in Computer Science. It can support a variety of intelligent services, such as advanced literature search, document classification, article recommendation, trend forecasting, hypothesis generation, and many others. CS-KG was evaluated against a benchmark of manually annotated statements, yielding excellent results.

Scientific conferences are essential for developing active research communities, promoting the cross-pollination of ideas and technologies, bridging between academia and industry, and disseminating new findings. Analyzing and monitoring scientific conferences is thus crucial for all users who need to take informed decisions in this space. However, scholarly search engines and bibliometric applications only provide a limited set of analytics for assessing research conferences, preventing us from performing a comprehensive analysis of these events. In this paper, we introduce the AIDA Dashboard, a novel web application, developed in collaboration with Springer Nature, for analyzing and comparing scientific conferences. This tool introduces three major new features: 1) it enables users to easily compare conferences within specific fields (e.g., Digital Libraries) and time-frames (e.g., the last five years), 2) it characterises conferences according to a 14K research topics from the Computer Science Ontology (CSO), and 3) it provides several functionalities for assessing the involvement of commercial organizations, including the ability to characterize industrial contributions according to 66 industrial sectors (e.g., automotive, financial, energy, electronics) from the Industrial Sectors Ontology (INDUSO). We evaluated the AIDA Dashboard by performing both a quantitative evaluation and a user study, obtaining excellent results in terms of quality of the analytics and usability.

Data lakes are repositories of data stored in natural/raw format. A data lake may include structured data from relational databases, semi-structured data (i.e., JSON, CSV), unstructured data (i.e., text data), or binary data (i.e., images, audio, video). It is usually built on top of cost-efficient infrastructures such as Hadoop, Amazon S3, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, etc. Several organisations rely on big data lakes for crucial tasks such as reporting, visualisation, advanced analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence. A major limitation of this solution is that without descriptive metadata and a mechanism to maintain it, such data tend to be noisy, making their management and analysis complex and time-consuming. Therefore, there is the need to add a semantic layer based on a formal ontology to describe the data and efficient mechanism to represent them as a knowledge graph. In this paper, we present a methodology to add a semantic layer to a data lake and thus obtain a knowledge graph that can support structured queries and advanced data exploration. We describe a practical implementation of a methodology applied to a data lake consisting of text data describing the online marketplace for lodging and tourism activities. We report statistics about the data lake and the resulting knowledge graph.

Analysing the relationship between academia and industry allows us to understand how the knowledge produced by the universities is being adopted and enriched by the industrial sector, and ultimately affects society through the release of relevant products and services. In this paper, we present a preliminary approach to assess and compare the research outputs of academia and industry. This solution integrates data from several knowledge graphs describing scientific articles (Microsoft Academics Graph), research topics (Computer Science Ontology), organizations (Global Research Identifier Database), and types of industry (DBpedia). We focus on the Semantic Web as exemplary field and report several insights regarding the different behaviours of academia and industry, and the types of industries most active in this field.

Scientific conferences play a crucial role in the field of Computer Science by promoting the cross-pollination of ideas and technologies, fostering new collaborations, shaping scientific communities, and connecting research efforts from academia and industry. However, current systems for analysing research data do not provide a good representation of conferences. Specifically, these solutions do not allow to track research trends, to compare conferences in similar fields, and to analyse the involvement of industrial sectors. In order to address these limitations, we developed the AIDA Dashboard, a tool for exploring and making sense of scientific conferences which integrates statistical analysis, semantic technologies, and visual analytics.

Academia and industry are constantly engaged in a joint effort for producing scientific knowledge that will shape the society of the future. Analysing the knowledge flow between them and understanding how they influence each other is a critical task for researchers, governments, funding bodies, investors, and companies. However, current corpora are unfit to support large-scale analysis of the knowledge flow between academia and industry since they lack of a good characterization of research topics and industrial sectors. In this short paper, we introduce the Academia/Industry DynAmics (AIDA) Knowledge Graph, which characterizes 14M papers and 8M patents according to the research topics drawn from the Computer Science Ontology. 4M papers and 5M patents are also classified according to the type of the author's affiliations (academy, industry, or collaborative) and 66 industrial sectors (e.g., automotive, financial, energy, electronics) obtained from DBpedia. AIDA was generated by an automatic pipeline that integrates several knowledge graphs and bibliographic corpora, including Microsoft Academic Graph, Dimensions, English DBpedia, the Computer Science Ontology, and the Global Research Identifier Database.

Scientific knowledge has been traditionally disseminated and preserved through research articles published in journals, conference proceedings, and online archives. However, this article-centric paradigm has been often criticized for not allowing to automatically process, categorize, and reason on this knowledge. An alternative vision is to generate a semantically rich and interlinked description of the content of research publications. In this paper, we present the Artificial Intelligence Knowledge Graph (AI-KG), a large-scale automatically generated knowledge graph that describes 820K research entities. AI-KG includes about 14M RDF triples and 1.2M reified statements extracted from 333K research publications in the field of AI, and describes 5 types of entities (tasks, methods, metrics, materials, others) linked by 27 relations. AI-KG has been designed to support a variety of intelligent services for analyzing and making sense of research dynamics, supporting researchers in their daily job, and helping to inform decision-making in funding bodies and research policymakers. AI-KG has been generated by applying an automatic pipeline that extracts entities and relationships using three tools:DyGIE++, Stanford CoreNLP, and the CSO Classifier. It then integrates and filters the resulting triples using a combination of deep learning and semantic technologies in order to produce a high-quality knowledge graph. This pipeline was evaluated on a manually crafted gold standard, yielding competitive results. AI-KG is available under CC BY 4.0 and can be downloaded as a dump or queried via a SPARQL endpoint.
