Abstract: This dissertation deals with model predictive control (MPC) for e-drives. MPC is an uprising control method that has been shown to exhibit superior performance in comparison to the state-of-the-art control techniques. Nevertheless, MPC possesses its own set of challenges, mainly: identifying accurate models that represent the plants under control, and tackling its computational complexity. Approaches to alleviate these challenges are proposed based on machine learning methods., Diese Dissertation befasst sich mit modellprädiktiver Regelung (MPC) für e-Antriebe. MPC ist ein Regelungsverfahren, das im Vergleich zu klassischen Methoden ein nachweislich besseres Verhalten aufweist. Dennoch bringt MPC seine eigenen Herausforderungen mit sich. Vor allem die Identifizierung genauer Modelle, welche die Strecke darstellen, sowie die Bewältigung der Rechenkomplexität. Ansätze zur Bewältigung dieser Herausforderungen werden auf Basis maschineller Lernmethoden vorangetrieben.

Abstract: Global warming is increasing abiotic stress's strength and severity, reducing plant growth and productivity. It is further proposed that global warming will increase the abundance of pathogens and the risk of diseases, potentially causing crop yield and quality losses. Therefore, several studies under field and controlled greenhouse conditions were conducted to gain knowledge on Ramularia Leaf Spot disease and Fusarium Head Blight in barley under variable environmental conditions and to investigate the effects of drought stress on the basal resistance of barley., Die globale Erwärmung erhöht die Stärke und Schwere von Stress-Situationen und verringert somit ein optimales Pflanzenwachstum und Produktivität. Weiter wird angenommen, dass die globale Erwärmung das Vorkommen von Krankheitserregern erhöht, was zu Ertrags- und Qualitätseinbußen an Kulturpflanzen führen kann. Um die Auswirkungen einer variablen Umwelt und speziell von Trockenstress auf die basale Krankheitsresistenz von Gerste zu untersuchen, wurden verschiedene Studien unter Feld- und kontrollierten Gewächshausbedingungen durchgeführt, um neue Erkenntnisse über die Krankheitsentwicklung von Ramularia-Blattflecken oder Fusarium Head Blight zu gewinnen.

Abstract: Diese Dissertationsschrift thematisiert die Online-Parameteridentifikation elektrischer Maschinen zur technischen Diagnose in elektrischen Antriebssystemen. Die Performanz verschiedener echtzeitfähiger Ansätze zur Online-Parameteridentifikation von Asynchronmaschinen werden in einem dynamischen automobilen Betriebsumfeld analysiert. Basierend auf diesen Ergebnissen und dem zusätzlichen Einsatz datenbasierter Modelle ergeben sich unterschiedliche Diagnoseansätze für den Einsatz in Automobile., This dissertation thesis addresses online parameter identification of electrical machines for technical diagnosis in electrical drive systems. The performance of different real-time approaches for online parameter identification of induction machines are analyzed in a dynamic automotive operating environment. Based on these results and the additional use of data-based models, different diagnostic approaches are developed for use in automobiles.

The development of data-driven methods allows cell anomalies to be detected in an early stage before extensive heat generation occurs. Using a reconfigurable battery system that exhibits cell-level switches, the work shows that switching actions improve fault localization and identification.

Abstract: In this dissertation, a 4-level converter topology with double-voltage demagnetization mode is proposed to reduce the tailing time of demagnetization current. Moreover, a direct power connection between the AFE and SRM is built so that the whole system can be controlled by manipulating the instantaneous power flow. To remove the cascade control structure, a model predictive direct power control strategy that directly regulates the speed and power flows within a newly-defined cost function is proposed., In dieser Dissertation wird eine 4-Stufen-Wandlertopologie mit Doppelspannungs-Entmagnetisierungsmodus vorgeschlagen. Eine direkte Leistungsverbindung zwischen dem AFE und dem SRM wird aufgebaut, so dass das gesamte System durch Manipulieren des momentanen Leistungsflusses gesteuert werden kann. 11. Vanishing twins, spared cohorts, and the birthweight of periviable infants born to Black and white women in the United States.

Abstract: Pregnancies ending before 26 weeks contribute 1% of births but 40% of infant deaths in the United States. The rate of these periviable births to non-Hispanic (NH) Black women exceeds four times that for NH whites. Small male periviable infants remain most likely to die. NH white periviable males weigh more than their NH Black counterparts. We argue that male infants born from twin gestations, in which one fetus died in utero (i.e., the vanishing twin syndrome), contribute to the disparity. We cannot directly test our argument because vanishing typically occurs before clinical recognition of pregnancy. We, however, describe and find associations that would emerge in vital statistics were our argument correct. Among male periviable singleton births from 288 monthly conception cohorts (January 1995 through December 2018), we found an average NH white advantage of 30 grams (759 grams versus 729 grams). Consistent with our argument, however, cohorts signaling relatively few survivors of the vanishing twin syndrome showed no disparity.

Abstract: This Work Plan lays out an approach and scope for assessing the viability of Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO) at Howard A. Hanson Dam. Tacoma Water and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Seattle District are collaborating with Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration National Weather Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, King County River and Floodplain Management, and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe to assess the benefits of reservoir management scenarios using forecasts. The Howard A. Hanson Dam FIRO project will investigate this key question: How can improved forecasts of landfalling atmospheric rivers and associated precipitation and runoff be used to improve the reliability of spring refill to meet instream flows for fish and water supply storage objectives, improve the effectiveness of summer water management in advance of the fall flood transition period, maintain or improve operations for downstream flood risk management, and ensure forecasts and operations are flexible enough to respond to a changing climate without impacting flood risk, water storage reliability, and flows for fish?

Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the predictive control of BTB converter for electrical machine. Given the fast dynamic response and flexible integration of various constraints, MPC is considered to be applied, and the DPVC strategy, which merges the DC-link voltage regulation and power regulation terms into one newly-defined cost function, is proposed. To cope with the parameters mismatch, Kalman filter is added to compensate for the steady-state error. Besides, to save the effort of parameter tuning, the weighting factor is further eliminated from the cost function., Diese Dissertation befasst sich mit der prädiktiven Regelung von BTB-Umrichtern für elektrische Maschinen. In Anbetracht der schnellen dynamischen Reaktion und der flexiblen Integration verschiedener Randbedingungen wird die DPVC-Strategie vorgeschlagen, die die Begriffe der Zwischenkreisspannungsregelung und der Leistungsregelung in einer neu definierten Kostenfunktion zusammenfasst. Abstract: This research focuses on the topological structures and advanced control methods for multilevel inverters (MLIs) applications. The dissertation is structured into two main parts. The first part focuses on upgrading established commercialized topologies to enable nine-level operation, with a specific emphasis on addressing structural complexity and enhancing converter efficiency. The second part focuses on exploiting the powerful of model predictive control (MPC) in the challenging multi objective control problem of MLI applications while proposing new MPC methods., Diese Forschung konzentriert sich auf die topologischen Strukturen und fortschrittlichen Regelungsmethoden für Anwendungen von Multilevel-Wechselrichtern (MLI). Die Dissertation ist in zwei Hauptteile gegliedert. Der erste Teil befasst sich mit der Aufrüstung etablierter, kommerzieller Topologien, um einen Neun-Level-Betrieb zu ermöglichen. Abstract: Die steigende Komplexität der Bordnetze stellt die Fahrzeughersteller vor neue Herausforderungen. Hochleistungsverbraucher wie die elektrische Lenkung oder Bremse können in kritischen Fahrsituationen die Spannung im Bordnetz deutlich senken. Auf Grundlage einer Bordnetzsimulation wird eine Reinforcement Learning-basierte Methode zur Reduktion von Spannungseinbrüchen in 12 V-Bordnetzen entwickelt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen anhand einer großen Anzahl an kritischen Fahrszenarien eine Verbesserung der Spannungseinbrüche gegenüber der Strategie eines Mittelklassefahrzeugs., The increasing complexity of vehicle electrical systems is presenting vehicle manufacturers with new challenges. High-power consumers such as electric steering or brakes can significantly reduce the voltage in the vehicle electrical system in critical driving situations. Based on a power net simulation, a reinforcement learning-based method for reducing voltage dips in 12 V electrical systems is developed. Based on a large number of critical driving scenarios, the results show an improvement in voltage dips compared to the strategy for a mid-range vehicle.

Abstract: Rotationsgeschwindigkeitsmessung ist von großer Bedeutung in Gebiete wie der Automobilindustrie oder erneuerbare Energie. Self-mixing Interferometry ist ein preiswerte und vielversprechende Messmethode, die präzise Messungen ermöglichen kann. Doch viele Herausforderungen wie Spektralverbreiterung erschweren genaue Messungen. In dieser Arbeit sind mithilfe von Korrelationsfunktionen neue Signalverarbeitungsmethoden entwickelt worden, mit denen diese Herausforderungen überwunden werden sollen., Rotational speed measurement is of great importance in many industries like automotive or renewable energy. Self-mixing interferometry is a very inexpensive promising non-contact measurement technology that can provide precise rotational speed measurement. But many challenges like spectral broadening complicate precise measurements significantly. In this work, new signal processing methods based on correlation functions have been developed to overcome these challenges.

Abstract: In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden Schätzverfahren vorgestellt und für den Einsatz in intelligenten Batteriesystemen optimiert. Diese Batteriesysteme zeichnen sich durch Sensorik auf Zellebene, eine rekonfigurierbare Topologie und die Anwendung von Methoden des maschinellen Lernens im Batteriemanagementsystem aus. Der Einfluss von Schalthandlungen auf die Systemanregung und Schätzgüte werden untersucht. Weiterhin wird eine Methode zur Fusion von Zellstrom- und Zellspannungssensoren vorgestellt, wodurch unter anderem die Messungenauigkeit verringert werden kann., In this work estimation methods are presented and optimized for the use in intelligent battery systems. These battery systems are characterized by sensors on cell level, a reconfigurable topology and the application of machine learning methods in the battery management system. The influence of switching operations on the system’s excitation and the estimation performance is investigated. Furthermore, a sensor data fusion method is presented to combine sensor data of cell current and voltage. The resulting benefits include but are not limited to an increased estimation accuracy.

19. Deep brain stimulation of the amygdala for treatment-resistant combat post-traumatic stress disorder: Long-term results

Abstract: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) holds promise for neuropsychiatric conditions where imbalance in network activity contributes to symptoms. Treatment-resistant Combat post-traumatic stress disorder (TR-PTSD) is a highly morbid condition and 50% of PTSD sufferers fail to recover despite psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy. Reminder-triggered symptoms may arise from inadequate top-down ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) control of amygdala reactivity. Here, we report long-term data on two TR-PTSD participants from an investigation utilizing high-frequency amygdala DBS. The two combat veterans were implanted bilaterally with quadripolar electrodes targeting the basolateral amygdala. Following a randomized staggered onset, patients received stimulation with adjustments based on PTSD symptom severity for four years while psychiatric and neuropsychiatric symptoms, neuropsychological performance, and electroencephalography were systematically monitored. Evaluation of vmPFC-Amygdala network engagement was assessed with 18FDG positron emission tomography (PET). CAPS-IV scores varied over time, but improved 55% from 119 at baseline to 53 at 4-year study endpoint in participant 1; and 44%, from 68 to 38 in participant 2. Thereafter, during 5 and 1.5 years of subsequent clinical care respectively, long-term bilateral amygdala DBS was associated with additional, clinically significant symptomatic and functional improvement. There were no serious stimulation-related adverse psychiatric, neuropsychiatric, neuropsychological, neurological, or neurosurgical effects. In one subject, symptomatic improvement was associated with an intensity-dependent reduction in amygdala theta frequency power. In out two participants, FDG-PET findings were inconclusive regarding the hypothesized mechanism of suppression of amygdala hyperactivity. Our findings encourage further research to confirm and extend our preliminary observations.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Estimates of the prevalence of drug-related out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) vary, ranging from 1.8% to 10.0% of medical OHCA. However, studies conducted prior to the recent wave of fentanyl deaths likely underestimate the current prevalence of drug-related OHCA. We evaluated recent trends in drug-related OHCA, hypothesizing that the proportion of presumed drug-related OHCA treated by emergency medical services (EMS) has increased since 2015. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of OHCA patients treated by EMS providers in San Francisco, California between 2015 and 2023. Participants included OHCA cases in which resuscitation was attempted by EMS. The study exposure was the year of arrest. Our primary outcome was the occurrence of drug-related OHCA, defined as the EMS impression of OHCA caused by a presumed or known overdose of medication(s) or drug(s). RESULTS: From 2015 to 2023, 5044 OHCA resuscitations attended by EMS (average 561 per year) met inclusion criteria. The median age was 65 (IQR 50-79); 3508 (69.6%) were male. The EMS impression of arrest etiology was drug-related in 446/5044 (8.8%) of OHCA. The prevalence of presumed drug-related OHCA increased significantly each year from 1% in 2015 to 17.6% in 2023 (p-value for trend = 0.0001). After adjustment, presumed drug-related OHCA increased by 30% each year from 2015-2023. CONCLUSION: Drug-related OHCA is an increasingly common etiology of OHCA. In 2023, one in six OHCA was presumed to be drug related. Among participants less than 60 years old, one in three OHCA was presumed to be drug related.

Abstract: Indirect Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have achieved a burning plasma state with neutron yields exceeding 170 kJ, roughly 3 times the prior record and a necessary stage for igniting plasmas. The results are achieved despite multiple sources of degradations that lead to high variability in performance. Results shown here, for the first time, include an empirical correction factor for mode-2 asymmetry in the burning plasma regime in addition to previously determined corrections for radiative mix and mode-1. Analysis shows that including these three corrections alone accounts for the measured fusion performance variability in the two highest performing experimental campaigns on the NIF to within error. Here we quantify the performance sensitivity to mode-2 symmetry in the burning plasma regime and apply the results, in the form of an empirical correction to a 1D performance model. Furthermore, we find the sensitivity to mode-2 determined through a series of integrated 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations to be consistent with the experimentally determined sensitivity only when including alpha-heating.

23. Cost-Benefit Analysis For Indonesia Building Sector: Whole-Building Cooling Solutions

Abstract: The Net Zero World (NZW) Initiative Collaborative Work Program with the Government of Indonesia (GoI) includes technical assistance and investment mobilization facilitation to accelerate deployment of energy efficiency technologies and solutions for the building sector. A February 2023 U.S.–Indonesia Joint Workshop on Decarbonizing the Building Sector yielded a NZW Indonesia Building Decarbonization Working Group (NZW IBDWG) with four sub-working groups (SWG): SWG-A National Center, SWG-B Capacity Building, SWG-C Investment and Financing, and SWG-D Pilot Projects. Technical analysis of whole-building cooling solutions for tropical climates of Indonesia was conducted by SWG-A to quantify energy savings, carbon dioxide reductions, and comfort improvements offered by 12 passive or low-energy cooling strategies: ceiling fans with and without thermostat setbacks; cool roofs; cool walls; exterior awnings; exterior shades; interior shades; insulated roofs; insulated walls; low-e windows; solar window films; and natural ventilation. Leveraging the results from SWG-A, cost-benefit analysis (CBA) was conducted by SWG-C to assess the consumer and national costs and impacts associated with these 12 cooling solutions. The evaluation involved estimating life-cycle costs (LCC), payback period (PBP), net present values (NPV), annual electricity burden change for low-income households, and reduced national annual power-sector generation demand by 2030, 2040, 2050, and 2060. This evaluation can help guide Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) investments in policies and programs to advance research, development, deployment, and commercial adoption (RDDCA) of efficient residential building sector cooling technologies and solutions in Indonesia. Abstract: This work focused on regulation and novel interaction partners of the plant susceptibility factor RACB from the barley-powdery mildew pathosystem. On one hand, posttranslational modification of RACB via ubiquitination was shown to influence RACB’s stability. In addition, three novel RACB-interaction partners of plant and fungal origin provided a potential link between RACB-signaling and the plant’s anionic phospholipid pathway., Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Regulation und bisher unbekannten Interaktionspartnern des pflanzlichen Anfälligkeitsfaktors RACB aus dem Gerste-Mehltau Pathosystem. Zum einen wurde Ubiquitinierung von RACB als posttranslationale Modifikation aufgedeckt, welche die Stabilität von RACB beeinflusst. Mit der Umsetzung einer erprobten Labormethode, der Impedanzspektroskopie, sollen im Fahrbetrieb von Elektrofahrzeugen Widerstandskennwerte gewonnen werden. Ein nachgelagertes Parametermodell führt die Impedanzdaten unter anderem durch ein künstliches neuronales Netz in ein komprimiertes Format über. Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich auch mit der diagnostischen Anwendung der neugewonnenen Informationen., The present work investigates the onboard system identification of battery cells. By implementing a proven laboratory method called impedance spectroscopy, characteristic resistance values are determined during the driving operation of electric vehicles. A downstream parameter model, including an artificial neural network, helps to convert the impedance data into a compressed format. The work also deals with the diagnostic application of the newly obtained information.

Abstract: The acetabular rim extension (ACE-X) implant is a custom-made three-dimensionally printed titanium device designed for the treatment of canine hip dysplasia. In this study, 34 dogs (61 hips) underwent ACE-X implantation, and assessments were conducted using computed tomography, force plate analysis, Ortolani’s test, and the Helsinki chronic pain index (HCPI) questionnaires at five intervals: the pre-operative day, the surgery day, and the 1.5-month, 3-month, and 12-month follow-ups. Statistically significant increases in femoral head coverage with a negative Ortolani subluxation test were observed immediately after surgery and persisted throughout the study. Osteoarthritis (OA) scores remained stable, but osteophyte size significantly increased between the surgery day and the 12-month follow-up, especially in hips with a baseline OA score of 2 compared to those with a score of 1. The force plate data showed no significant changes during the study. The HCPI demonstrated a significant decrease in pain score from pre-operative value to six-week follow-up and gradually decreased over time. Major complications were identified in six hips (9.8%) of four dogs. In conclusion, the ACE-X implant effectively increased femoral head coverage, eliminated subluxation, and provided long-term pain relief with minimal complications, benefiting over 90% of the study population. The study supports the ACE-X implant as a valuable alternative treatment for canine hip dysplasia.

Abstract: A mechanistic connection between aging and development is largely unexplored. Through profiling age-related chromatin and transcriptional changes across 22 murine cell types, analyzed alongside previous mouse and human organismal maturation datasets, we uncovered a transcription factor binding site (TFBS) signature common to both processes. Early-life candidate cis-regulatory elements (cCREs), progressively losing accessibility during maturation and aging, are enriched for cell-type identity TFBSs. Conversely, cCREs gaining accessibility throughout life have a lower abundance of cell identity TFBSs but elevated activator protein 1 (AP-1) levels. We implicate TF redistribution toward these AP-1 TFBS-rich cCREs, in synergy with mild downregulation of cell identity TFs, as driving early-life cCRE accessibility loss and altering developmental and metabolic gene expression. Such remodeling can be triggered by elevating AP-1 or depleting repressive H3K27me3. We propose that AP-1-linked chromatin opening drives organismal maturation by disrupting cell identity TFBS-rich cCREs, thereby reprogramming transcriptome and cell function, a mechanism hijacked in aging through ongoing chromatin opening.

Abstract: In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

35. Continuous daily sampling of airborne eDNA detects all vertebrate species identified by camera traps

Abstract: Ongoing pressures on global biodiversity require conservation action that is not possible without effective biomonitoring. Terrestrial vertebrate surveys are commonly performed using camera traps, a time-intensive method known to miss many small or arboreal species and birds. Recent advances have shown airborne eDNA to be a potentially suitable technique to more effectively monitor vertebrate communities in a time- and cost-effective manner. Here, we test whether commercially available air samplers that collect air particles 24/7 during a 1-week period can be used to detect the presence of vertebrates through airborne eDNA. The results are compared to camera trap records at three locations with differing habitats in the Netherlands. Simultaneous sampling with three different air samplers for 3 weeks resulted in detection of 154 vertebrate taxa, of which the majority were birds or mammals (113 and 33 species, respectively), along with four fish and four amphibian species. All species observed using camera traps were also retrieved via airborne eDNA, although not on every day of sampling. The Burkard spore trap, used routinely for pollen monitoring, showed the highest number of vertebrate species, and only in three samples when a mammal species was detected using a camera trap it remained undetected via eDNA. We also detected unique species at the three locations using airborne eDNA, indicative of the habitat in which they were living. However, we also detected species that we could not account for. The multitude of species found using airborne eDNA compared to camera traps indicate the sensitivity of the method; however, subsequent studies should prioritize validation of these findings through alternative biomonitoring approaches.

36. Metaproteomics-informed stoichiometric modeling reveals the responses of wetland microbial communities to oxygen and sulfate exposure

Abstract: Climate changes significantly impact greenhouse gas emissions from wetland soil. Specifically, wetland soil may be exposed to oxygen (O2) during droughts, or to sulfate (SO42-) as a result of sea level rise. How these stressors – separately and together – impact microbial food webs driving carbon cycling in the wetlands is still not understood. To investigate this, we integrated geochemical analysis, proteogenomics, and stoichiometric modeling to characterize the impact of elevated SO42- and O2 levels on microbial methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The results uncovered the adaptive responses of this community to changes in SO42- and O2 availability and identified altered microbial guilds and metabolic processes driving CH4 and CO2 emissions. Elevated SO42- reduced CH4 emissions, with hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis more suppressed than acetoclastic. Elevated O2 shifted the greenhouse gas emissions from CH4 to CO2. The metabolic effects of combined SO42- and O2 exposures on CH4 and CO2 emissions were similar to those of O2 exposure alone. The reduction in CH4 emission by increased SO42- and O2 was much greater than the concomitant increase in CO2 emission. Thus, greater SO42- and O2 exposure in wetlands is expected to reduce the aggregate warming effect of CH4 and CO2. Metaproteomics and stoichiometric modeling revealed a unique subnetwork involving carbon metabolism that converts lactate and SO42- to produce acetate, H2S, and CO2 when SO42- is elevated under oxic conditions. This study provides greater quantitative resolution of key metabolic processes necessary for the prediction of CH4 and CO2 emissions from wetlands under future climate scenarios.

Abstract: Wind energy development is a key component of climate change mitigation. However, birds collide with wind turbines, and this additional mortality may negatively impact populations. Collision risk could be reduced by informed selection of turbine dimensions, but the effects of turbine dimensions are still unknown for many species. As analyses of mortality data have several limitations, we applied a simulation approach based on flight height distributions of six European raptor species. To obtain accurate flight height data, we used high-frequency GPS tracking (GPS tags deployed on 275 individuals). The effects of ground clearance and rotor diameter of wind turbines on collision risk were studied using the Band collision risk model. Five species had a unimodal flight height distribution, with a mode below 25 m above ground level, while Short-toed Eagle showed a more uniform distribution with a weak mode between 120 and 260 m. The proportion of positions within 32–200 m ranged from 11 % in Marsh Harrier to 54 % in Red Kite. With increasing ground clearance (from 20 to 100 m), collision risk decreased in the species with low mode (−56 to −66 %), but increased in Short-toed Eagle (+38 %). With increasing rotor diameter (from 50 to 160 m) at fixed ground clearance, the collision risk per turbine increased in all species (+151 to +558 %), while the collision risk per MW decreased in the species with low mode (−50 % to −57 %). These results underpin that wind turbine dimensions can have substantial effects on the collision risk of raptors. As the effects varied between species, wind energy planning should consider the composition of the local bird community to optimise wind turbine dimensions. For species with a low mode of flight height, the collision risk for a given total power capacity could be reduced by increasing ground clearance, and using fewer turbines with larger diameter.

Het RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) maakt elk jaar in opdracht van de NVWA (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit) een overzicht van de belangrijkste zoönosen in Nederland en hoe vaak ze voorkomen. Het gaat vooral om zoönosen die artsen bij de GGD (Gemeentelijke gezondheidsdiensten) moeten melden en/of dierenartsen bij de NVWA. Beleidsmakers en andere professionals kunnen deze informatie gebruiken om als het nodig is maatregelen te nemen.

Abstract: Photodetection across the near‐infrared (NIR) to short‐wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrum is important for many applications. This study explores photodetection using nanocrystalline graphite (NCG) in a suspended, narrow constriction configuration for improved performance. Bowtie constrictions are fabricated in both suspended and substrate‐supported NCG devices, allowing for accurate comparison. It shows that the suspended constriction enhances the bolometric photoresponse and sensor detectivity by several orders of magnitude compared to the substrate‐supported counterparts, attributed to reduced thermalization and electric field concentration. The suspended configuration preserves a spectrally flat photoresponse while reducing operating voltage through a tailored NCG layer thickness. Chromatic aberration‐corrected photocurrent spectroscopy is used to measure the photoresponse from 1100 to 1700 nm, and diffraction‐limited hyperspectral photocurrent imaging is conducted to measure the local photocurrent generation across the device. Bolometric and photo‐thermoelectric currents are restricted to the suspended central constriction due to electric field concentration and thermal decoupling and the direction of the photocurrents within the sensor is revealed. The experimental data is complemented by simulations of the light absorption and the electric field distribution. This work indicates the importance of geometry and thermal decoupling for boosting device performance, offering promising prospects for sensitive and low‐power NCG‐based photodetectors in the NIR‐SWIR range.

Abstract: All-carbon field-effect transistors, which combine carbon nanotubes and graphene hold great promise for many applications such as digital logic devices and single-photon emitters. However, the understanding of the physical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)/graphene hybrid systems in such devices remained limited. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we use a quantum transport model for field-effect transistors based on graphene electrodes and CNT channels to explain the experimentally observed low on currents. We find that large graphene/CNT spacing and short contact lengths limit the device performance. We have also elucidated in this work the experimentally observed ambipolar transport behavior caused by the flat conduction- and valence-bands and describe non-ideal gate-control of the contacts and channel region by the quantum capacitance of graphene and the carbon nanotube. We hope that our insights will accelerate the design of efficient all-carbon field-effect transistors.

Abstract: The 2023 European Bioinformatics Community for Mass Spectrometry (EuBIC-MS) Developers Meeting was held from January 15th to January 20th, 2023, in Congressi Stefano Franscin at Monte Verità in Ticino, Switzerland. The participants were scientists and developers working in computational mass spectrometry (MS), metabolomics, and proteomics. The 5-day program was split between introductory keynote lectures and parallel hackathon sessions focusing on “Artificial Intelligence in proteomics” to stimulate future directions in the MS-driven omics areas. During the latter, the participants developed bioinformatics tools and resources addressing outstanding needs in the community. The hackathons allowed less experienced participants to learn from more advanced computational MS experts and actively contribute to highly relevant research projects. We successfully produced several new tools applicable to the proteomics community by improving data analysis and facilitating future research.

Abstract: The spectrum of cardiorenal and metabolic diseases comprises many disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), chronic kidney disease (CKD), atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), heart failure (HF), dyslipidemias, hypertension, and associated comorbidities such as pulmonary diseases and metabolism dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease and metabolism dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (MASLD and MASH, respectively, formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [NAFLD and NASH]). Because cardiorenal and metabolic diseases share pathophysiologic pathways, two or more are often present in the same individual. Findings from recent outcome trials have demonstrated benefits of various treatments across a range of conditions, suggesting a need for practice recommendations that will guide clinicians to better manage complex conditions involving diabetes, cardiorenal, and/or metabolic (DCRM) diseases. To meet this need, we formed an international volunteer task force comprising leading cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, and primary care physicians to develop the DCRM 2.0 Practice Recommendations, an updated and expanded revision of a previously published multispecialty consensus on the comprehensive management of persons living with DCRM. The recommendations are presented as 22 separate graphics covering the essentials of management to improve general health, control cardiorenal risk factors, and manage cardiorenal and metabolic comorbidities, leading to improved patient outcomes.

Abstract: Anomia is a common consequence following brain damage and a central symptom in semantic dementia (SD) and post-stroke aphasia (PSA), for instance. Picture naming tests are often used in clinical assessments and experience suggests that items vary systematically in their difficulty. Despite clinical intuitions and theoretical accounts, however, the existence and determinants of such a naming difficulty gradient remain to be empirically established and evaluated. Seizing the unique opportunity of two large-scale datasets of semantic dementia and post-stroke aphasia patients assessed with the same picture naming test, we applied an Item Response Theory (IRT) approach and we (a) established that an item naming difficulty gradient exists, which (b) partly differs between patient groups, and is (c) related in part to a limited number of psycholinguistic properties - frequency and familiarity for SD, frequency and word length for PSA. 48. BrainLossNet : a fast, accurate and robust method to estimate brain volume loss from longitudinal MRI

Abstract: Purpose: MRI-derived brain volume loss (BVL) is widely used as neurodegeneration marker. SIENA is state-of-the-art for BVL measurement, but limited by long computation time. Here we propose “BrainLossNet”, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based method for BVL-estimation. Methods: BrainLossNet uses CNN-based non-linear registration of baseline(BL)/follow-up(FU) 3D-T1w-MRI pairs. BVL is computed by non-linear registration of brain parenchyma masks segmented in the BL/FU scans. The BVL estimate is corrected for image distortions using the apparent volume change of the total intracranial volume. BrainLossNet was trained on 1525 BL/FU pairs from 83 scanners. Agreement between BrainLossNet and SIENA was assessed in 225 BL/FU pairs from 94 MS patients acquired with a single scanner and 268 BL/FU pairs from 52 scanners acquired for various indications. Robustness to short-term variability of 3D-T1w-MRI was compared in 354 BL/FU pairs from a single healthy men acquired in the same session without repositioning with 116 scanners (Frequently-Traveling-Human-Phantom dataset, FTHP). Results: Processing time of BrainLossNet was 2–3 min. The median [interquartile range] of the SIENA-BrainLossNet BVL difference was 0.10% [− 0.18%, 0.35%] in the MS dataset, 0.08% [− 0.14%, 0.28%] in the various indications dataset. The distribution of apparent BVL in the FTHP dataset was narrower with BrainLossNet (p = 0.036; 95th percentile: 0.20% vs 0.32%). Conclusion: BrainLossNet on average provides the same BVL estimates as SIENA, but it is significantly more robust, probably due to its built-in distortion correction. Processing time of 2–3 min makes BrainLossNet suitable for clinical routine. This can pave the way for widespread clinical use of BVL estimation from intra-scanner BL/FU pairs.

Abstract: This article presents a series of recommendations for the publication of archaeological data, to improve their usability. These 12 recommendations were formulated by archaeological data experts who mined thousands of publications for different data types (including funerary practices, accelerator mass spectrometry dating, stable isotopes, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany and pathologies) during the initial construction of the Big Interdisciplinary Archaeological Database (BIAD). We also include data harmonisation vocabularies utilised for the integration of data from different recording systems. The case studies we cite to illustrate the recommendations are grounded in examples from the published literature and are presented in a problem/solution format. Though practically oriented towards the facilitation of efficient databasing, these recommendations – which we refer to as the BIAD Standards – are broadly applicable by those who want to extract scientific data from archaeological information, those who work with a specific region or theoretical focus and journal editors and manuscript authors. We anticipate that the use of the BIAD Standards will increase the usability, visibility, interoperability and longevity of published data and also increase the citations of those publications from which data were mined. The Standards will also help frame a unified foundation to support the continued integration of the natural sciences with archaeological research in the future.
