Urbanization is an important driver of global change associated with a set of environmental modifications that affect the introduction and distribution of invasive non-native species (species with populations transported by humans beyond their natural biogeographic range that established and are spreading in their introduced range; hereafter, invasive species). These species are recognized as a cause of large ecological and economic losses. Nevertheless, the economic impacts of these species in urban areas are still poorly understood. Here we present a synthesis of the reported economic costs of invasive species in urban areas using the global InvaCost database, and demonstrate that costs are likely underestimated. Sixty-one invasive species have been reported to cause a cumulative cost of US$ 326.7 billion in urban areas between 1965 and 2021 globally (average annual cost of US$ 5.7 billion). Class Insecta was responsible for >99 % of reported costs (US$ 324.4 billion), followed by Aves (US$ 1.4 billion), and Magnoliopsida (US$ 494 million). The reported costs were highly uneven with the sum of the five costliest species representing 80 % of reported costs. Most reported costs were a result of damage (77.3 %), principally impacting public and social welfare (77.9 %) and authorities-stakeholders (20.7 %), and were almost entirely in terrestrial environments (99.9 %). We found costs reported for 24 countries. Yet, there are 73 additional countries with no reported costs, but with occurrences of invasive species that have reported costs in other countries. Although covering a relatively small area of the Earth's surface, urban areas represent about 15 % of the total reported costs attributed to invasive species. These results highlight the conservative nature of the estimates and impacts, revealing important biases present in the evaluation and publication of reported data on costs. Biological invasions pose a growing threat to ecosystems, biodiversity, and socio-economic interests. In the European Union, the introduction of non-native species through trade, tourism, and other pathways has led to unintended consequences. Among these non-native species, a subset exhibits negative impacts and is commonly referred to as ‘invasive’. However, the number of non-native species and the proportion considered invasive vary across different member states of the European Union. Classifications and definitions of invasive species also differ among countries potentially leading to an underrepresentation. Here, we use Germany as a case study to highlight gaps in invasive species classifications. The number of non-native species reported as invasive in Germany remains low (~ 14%) compared to other European Union member states (~ 22%), despite Germany’s strong economy, significant research investments, and well-established trade networks. This disparities may be attributed to complex and multifaceted factors, encompassing differences in classifications, variations in research effort and focus, and diverse national priorities. We further propose that the impacts of non-native species on resources and biodiversity may be more likely to be overlooked, principally in large economies reliant on international trade, such as Germany. This oversight could negatively affect conservation efforts and funding for research aimed at improving understanding invasive species threats. We suggest that this underreporting may stem from a focus on maintaining economic growth, which might have taken precedence over addressing the potential ecological and economic impacts of invasive species.

A key control on the magnitude of coastal eutrophication is the degree to which currents quickly transport nitrogen derived from human sources away from the coast to the open ocean before eutrophication develops. In the Southern California Bight (SCB), an upwelling-dominated eastern boundary current ecosystem, anthropogenic nitrogen inputs increase algal productivity and cause subsurface acidification and oxygen (O 2 ) loss along the coast. However, the extent of anthropogenic influence on eutrophication beyond the coastal band, and the physical transport mechanisms and biogeochemical processes responsible for these effects are still poorly understood. Here, we use a submesoscale-resolving numerical model to document the detailed biogeochemical mass balance of nitrogen, carbon and oxygen, their physical transport, and effects on offshore habitats. Despite management of terrestrial nutrients that has occurred in the region over the last 20 years, coastal eutrophication continues to persist. The input of anthropogenic nutrients promote an increase in productivity, remineralization and respiration offshore, with recurrent O 2 loss and pH decline in a region located 30-90 km from the mainland. During 2013 to 2017, the spatially averaged 5-year loss rate across the Bight was 1.3 mmol m -3 O 2 , with some locations losing on average up to 14.2 mmol m -3 O 2 . The magnitude of loss is greater than model uncertainty assessed from data-model comparisons and from quantification of intrinsic variability. This phenomenon persists for 4 to 6 months of the year over an area of 278,40 km 2 ( ∼ 30% of SCB area). These recurrent features of acidification and oxygen loss are associated with cross-shore transport of nutrients by eddies and plankton biomass and their accumulation and retention within persistent eddies offshore within the SCB.

Standardised terminology in science is important for clarity of interpretation and communication. In invasion science – a dynamic and rapidly evolving discipline – the proliferation of technical terminology has lacked a standardised framework for its development. The result is a convoluted and inconsistent usage of terminology, with various discrepancies in descriptions of damage and interventions. A standardised framework is therefore needed for a clear, universally applicable, and consistent terminology to promote more effective communication across researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers. Inconsistencies in terminology stem from the exponential increase in scientific publications on the patterns and processes of biological invasions authored by experts from various disciplines and countries since the 1990s, as well as publications by legislators and policymakers focusing on practical applications, regulations, and management of resources. Aligning and standardising terminology across stakeholders remains a challenge in invasion science. Here, we review and evaluate the multiple terms used in invasion science (e.g. ‘non‐native’, ‘alien’, ‘invasive’ or ‘invader’, ‘exotic’, ‘non‐indigenous’, ‘naturalised’, ‘pest’) to propose a more simplified and standardised terminology. The streamlined framework we propose and translate into 28 other languages is based on the terms (i) ‘non‐native’, denoting species transported beyond their natural biogeographic range, (ii) ‘established non‐native’, i.e. those non‐native species that have established self‐sustaining populations in their new location(s) in the wild, and (iii) ‘invasive non‐native’ – populations of established non‐native species that have recently spread or are spreading rapidly in their invaded range actively or passively with or without human mediation. The increase of the frequency and severity of marine diseases affecting farmed marine mollusks are currently threatening the sustainability of this aquaculture sector, with few available prophylactic or therapeutic solutions. Recent advances have shown that the innate immune system of invertebrates can develop memory mechanisms allowing for efficient protection against pathogens. These properties have been called innate immune memory, immune priming or trained immunity. Previous results demonstrated the possibility to elicit antiviral immune priming to protect Pacific oysters against the ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1), currently plaguing M. gigas production worldwide. Here, we demonstrate that UV-inactivated OsHV-1 is also a potent elicitor of immune priming. Previous exposure to the inactivated virus was able to efficiently protect oysters against OsHV-1, significantly increasing oyster survival. We demonstrate that this exposure blocked viral replication and was able to induce antiviral gene expression potentially involved in controlling the infection. Finally, we show that this phenomenon can persist for at least 3 months, suggesting the induction of innate immune memory mechanisms. This study unravels new ways to train the Pacific oyster immune system that could represent an opportunity to develop new prophylactic strategies to improve health and to sustain the development of marine mollusk aquaculture.

Brief introduction: What are microclimates and why are they important?: Microclimate science has developed into a global discipline. Microclimate science is increasingly used to understand and mitigate climate and biodiversity shifts. Here, we provide an overview of the current status of microclimate ecology and biogeography in terrestrial ecosystems, and where this field is heading next. Microclimate investigations in ecology and biogeography: We highlight the latest research on interactions between microclimates and organisms, including how microclimates influence individuals, and through them populations, communities and entire ecosystems and their processes. We also briefly discuss recent research on how organisms shape microclimates from the tropics to the poles. Microclimate applications in ecosystem management: Microclimates are also important in ecosystem management under climate change. We showcase new research in microclimate management with examples from biodiversity conservation, forestry and urban ecology. We discuss the importance of microrefugia in conservation and how to promote microclimate heterogeneity. Methods for microclimate science: We showcase the recent advances in data acquisition, such as novel field sensors and remote sensing methods. We discuss microclimate modelling, mapping and data processing, including accessibility of modelling tools, advantages of mechanistic and statistical modelling and solutions for computational challenges that have pushed the state-of-the-art of the field. What's next?: We identify major knowledge gaps that need to be filled for further advancing microclimate investigations, applications and methods. These gaps include spatiotemporal scaling of microclimate data, mismatches between macroclimate and microclimate in predicting responses of organisms to climate change, and the need for more evidence on the outcomes of microclimate management.

Biological invasions pose a rapidly expanding threat to the persistence, functioning and service provisioning of ecosystems globally, and to socio-economic interests. The stages of successful invasions are driven by the same mechanism that underlies adaptive changes across species in general-via natural selection on intraspecific variation in traits that influence survival and reproductive performance (i.e., fitness). Surprisingly, however, the rapid progress in the field of invasion science has resulted in a predominance of species-level approaches (such as deny lists), often irrespective of natural selection theory, local adaptation and other population-level processes that govern successful invasions. To address these issues, we analyse non-native species dynamics at the population level by employing a database of European freshwater macroinvertebrate time series, to investigate spreading speed, abundance dynamics and impact assessments among populations. Our findings reveal substantial variability in spreading speed and abundance trends within and between macroinvertebrate species across biogeographic regions, indicating that levels of invasiveness and impact differ markedly. Discrepancies and inconsistencies among species-level risk screenings and real population-level data were also identified, highlighting the inherent challenges in accurately assessing population-level effects through species-level assessments. In recognition of the importance of population-level assessments, we urge a shift in invasive species management frameworks, which should account for the dynamics of different populations and their environmental context. Adopting an adaptive, region-specific and population-focused approach is imperative, considering the diverse ecological contexts and varying degrees of susceptibility. Introduction The number of people adhering to plant-based diets has been increasing dramatically in recent years, fueled by both environmental and animal welfare concerns. Beneficial or possible adverse consequences of such diets, particularly the most restrictive forms during pregnancy, have been minimally explored. The aim of this prospective observational study was to examine associations between different forms of plant-based diets during pregnancy with birth outcomes and pregnancy complications. Material and methods The Danish National Birth Cohort included 100 413 pregnancies to 91 381 women in 1996–2002. The population consisted of 66 738 pregnancies, about which sufficient dietary data were available and included in the study. Dietary and supplemental intake was assessed by Food Frequency Questionnaire in gestational week 25 and women were characterized as fish/poultry-vegetarians, lacto/ovo-vegetarians, vegans or omnivorous, based on their self-report in gestational week 30. Main outcome measures were pregnancy and birth complications, birth weight and small for gestational age. Results A total of 98.7% (n = 65 872) of participants were defined as omnivorous, whereas 1.0% (n = 666), 0.3% (n = 183) and 0.03% (n = 18) identified themselves as fish/poultry vegetarians, lacto/ovo-vegetarians or vegans, respectively. Protein intake was lower among lacto/ovo-vegetarians (13.3%) and vegans (10.4%) than among omnivorous participants (15.4%). Intake of micronutrients was also considerably lower among vegans, but when dietary supplements were taken into consideration, no major differences were observed. Compared with omnivorous mothers, vegans had a higher prevalence of preeclampsia and their offspring had on average −240 g (95% confidence interval −450 to −30) lower birth weight. In this paper, we comment and discuss the fifteen replies that interpret, solicit, problematize, and further develop our Critical Naturalism: A Manifesto (Krisis 42(1)), that have been published in Krisis 43(1). In the paper, we address four overarching topics that we see emerging from the replies: Histories and traditions of criticial naturalism; the relation between theory and praxis; the question of what is critical about critical naturalism; and finally the question of utopia. Additionally, we discuss three general types of attitudes that our critics take to the Manifesto.&nbsp

Plusieurs enjeux environnementaux sont liés au transport de sédiments en rivière, comme l’érosion des berges, la qualité de l’eau et les habitats de poissons. Une intervention en rivière ne prenant pas en compte le transport de sédiments risque de gravement endommager l’écosystème. Conséquemment, il est primordial dans un premier temps de comprendre les processus de transport de sédiments, et dans un deuxième temps de pouvoir les répliquer numériquement pour concevoir des solutions écoresponsables. En particulier, le processus de formation d’une couche de pavage dans une rivière à lit en gravier est bien documenté dans des canaux expérimentaux à petite échelle, mais il manque de la littérature sur des expériences à plus grande échelle et sur la modélisation numérique du pavage. Cette étude introduit une rivière expérimentale novatrice à moyenne échelle (largeur de fond de 2,5m; longueur de 50m), le Outdoor Experimental River Facility (OERF), qui comporte des berges mobiles et une distribution granulométrique comprenant du sable et gravier (0,08 mm à 112 mm; D50 = 10 mm). La rivière expérimentale est utilisée dans une série d’expériences avec un débit constant et sans approvisionnement en sédiments, menant à la formation d’une couche de pavage. Un logiciel de modélisation morphodynamique (Gaia) est couplé à un logiciel de modélisation hydrodynamique (Telemac-2D) afin de répliquer les expériences en laboratoire et étudier des paramètres clés pour la modélisation du pavage, à savoir la stratification du modèle et le choix d’équation de transport par charriage (bed load). Surprisingly, however, the rapid progress in the field of invasion science has resulted in a predominance of species-level approaches (such as deny lists), often irrespective of natural selection theory, local adaptation and other population-level processes that govern successful invasions. To address these issues, we analyse non-native species dynamics at the population level by employing a database of European freshwater macroinvertebrate time series, to investigate spreading speed, abundance dynamics and impact assessments among populations. Our findings reveal substantial variability in spreading speed and abundance trends within and between macroinvertebrate species across biogeographic regions, indicating that levels of invasiveness and impact differ markedly. Discrepancies and inconsistencies among species-level risk screenings and real population-level data were also identified, highlighting the inherent challenges in accurately assessing population-level effects through species-level assessments. In recognition of the importance of population-level assessments, we urge a shift in invasive species management frameworks, which should account for the dynamics of different populations and their environmental context. Adopting an adaptive, region-specific and population-focused approach is imperative, considering the diverse ecological contexts and varying degrees of susceptibility. A standardised framework is therefore needed for a clear, universally applicable, and consistent terminology to promote more effective communication across researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers. Inconsistencies in terminology stem from the exponential increase in scientific publications on the patterns and processes of biological invasions authored by experts from various disciplines and countries since the 1990s, as well as publications by legislators and policymakers focusing on practical applications, regulations, and management of resources. Aligning and standardising terminology across stakeholders remains a challenge in invasion science. Here, we review and evaluate the multiple terms used in invasion science (e.g. 'non-native', 'alien', 'invasive' or 'invader', 'exotic', 'non-indigenous', 'naturalised', 'pest') to propose a more simplified and standardised terminology. Eight Gram-stain-negative bacterial strains were isolated from cheese rinds sampled in France. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, all isolates were assigned to the genus Halomonas. Phylogenetic investigations, including 16S rRNA gene studies, multilocus sequence analysis, reconstruction of a pan-genome phylogenetic tree with the concatenated core-genome content and average nucleotide identity (ANI) calculations, revealed that they constituted three novel and well-supported clusters. The closest relative species, determined using the whole-genome sequences of the strains, were Halomonas zhanjiangensis for two groups of cheese strains, sharing 82.4 and 93.1 % ANI, and another cluster sharing 92.2 % ANI with the Halomonas profundi type strain. The strains isolated herein differed from the previously described species by ANI values <95 % and several biochemical, enzymatic and colony characteristics. The results of phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic analyses indicated that the isolates belonged to three novel Halomonas species, for which the names Halomonas citrativorans sp. nov., Halomonas casei sp. nov. and Halomonas colorata sp. nov. are proposed, with isolates FME63T (=DSM 113315T=CIRM-BIA2430T=CIP 111880T=LMG 32013T), FME64T (=DSM 113316T=CIRM-BIA2431T=CIP 111877T=LMG 32015T) and FME66T (=DSM 113318T=CIRM-BIA2433T=CIP 111876T=LMG 32014T) as type strains, respectively.

This paper describes a receiver that uses an innovative method to predict, according to history of receiver operating metrics (packet lost/well received), the optimum automatic gain control (AGC) index or most appropriate variable gain range to be used for next packet reception, anticipating an interferer appearing during the payload reception. This allows the receiver to have higher immunity to interferers even if they occur during the gain frozen payload reception period whilst still ensuring an optimum sensitivity level. Sea surface temperature (SST) is characterized by abundant warm and cold structures that influence the overlying atmospheric boundary layer dynamics through two different mechanisms. First, turbulence and large eddies in the lower troposphere are affected by atmospheric stability, which can be modified by local SST, resulting in enhanced vertical mixing and larger surface winds over warmer waters. Second, the thermodynamic adjustment of air density to the underlying SST structures and the subsequent changes in atmospheric pressure drive secondary circulations. This paper aims to disentangle the effects of these processes and explore the environmental conditions that favor them. Two main environmental variables are considered: the large-scale air–sea temperature difference (proxy for stability) and wind speed. Using 5 years of daily reanalyses data, we investigate the 10-m wind response to SST structures. Based on linear regression between wind divergence and SST derivatives, we show that both mechanisms operate over a large spectrum of conditions. Ten-meter wind divergence is strongly impacted by the local SST via its effect on vertical mixing for midwind regimes in slightly unstable to near-neutral conditions, whereas the secondary circulation is important in two distinct regimes: low wind speed with a slightly unstable air column and high background wind speed with a very unstable air column. The first regime is explained by the prolonged Lagrangian time that the air parcel stays over an SST structure while the second one is related to strong heat fluxes at the air–sea interface, which greatly modify the marine atmospheric boundary layer properties. Location and frequency of the environmentally favorable conditions are discussed, as well as the response in low-cloud cover and rainfall.

Est-il possible de mesurer le bien-être subjectif des Français en analysant les messages qu’ils publient sur Twitter ? Quels sont les avantages et les limites de cette approche ? Et que peut-on apprendre de l’analyse de leurs émotions à partir de cette nouvelle source de données ? Cet opuscule présente les résultats d’un travail de recherche original issu de l’analyse de plusieurs dizaines de millions de messages publiés sur Twitter entre 2010 et 2022. L’auteur commence par décrire une méthodologie susceptible de construire des indicateurs de sentiment et d’émotion de manière automatique. L’analyse des mots clés et des hashtags permet de révéler les principaux sujets qui intéressent les Français et les émotions associées au traitement de chacun. Des indicateurs désagrégés sont aussi présentés – par genre, âge et catégorie socio-professionnelle –, qui permettent d’analyser de manière plus fine les déterminants des variations du bien-être subjectif. L’analyse des messages illustre un net décrochage du moral des Français – et une hausse de leur colère – à partir de la fin de l’année 2018, au moment du mouvement des Gilets jaunes. Après une forte montée de la peur quand s’est déclarée la Covid-19, la colère est l’émotion qui a repris le dessus depuis le milieu de l’année 2020, autour des thématiques de la #politique et de la #santé, en dépit d’une augmentation des émotions relatives à l’#économie. La guerre en Ukraine a entraîné une nouvelle dégradation des émotions exprimées par les Français en février 2022, un effet qui s’est estompé lorsque les craintes d’une 3e guerre mondiale se sont éloignées et ont cédé la place à la thématique des élections présidentielles françaises.

De John Lee Hooker, on connaît surtout la légende : l'enfant qui a grandi dans les champs de coton du Delta, le fugueur hobo de 14 ans, le guitariste improbable qui ne pouvait jouer qu'en solo. Ou sa carrière contrastée, faite de succès fulgurants – comme « Boogie Chillen' », « Boom Boom » ou « I'm In The Mood » – et de périodes d'oubli relatif. S'il a su, au fil des entretiens livrés dans sa vie, construire son propre mythe, Hooker a aussi laissé les commentateurs donner libre cours à leur fantaisie. Comment s'y retrouver ? Démystifiant ce qui doit l'être, ce livre s'attache à éclairer la vie nébuleuse de ce grand bluesman, à débusquer ses stratagèmes et ses sauts de côté. Car John Lee Hooker est un personnage faussement simple, irrégulier, à la fois rusé comme Ulysse, envoûtant comme Orphée, changeant comme un Protée des temps modernes qui s'adapte aux lois du marché tout en restant éminemment singulier. Malgré le brouillard de sa légende, une chose ne trompe pas : on reconnaît dans la seconde un riff de Hooker. Olivier Renault est né en 1964. Libraire à Paris, il a publié des livres sur l’histoire de Montparnasse et Montmartre, sur les peintres Bonnard et Soutine et sur l’écrivain Blaise Cendrars.

Standard errors measure the uncertainty in sample estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sample. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

The air–sea exchanges in latent heat, sensible heat, momentum, and carbon dioxide associated with this so-called mesoscale air–sea interaction are robust near the major western boundary currents, Southern Ocean fronts, and equatorial and coastal upwelling zones, but they are also ubiquitous over the global oceans wherever ocean mesoscale processes are active. Current theories, informed by rapidly advancing observational and modeling capabilities, have established the importance of mesoscale and frontal-scale air–sea interaction processes for understanding large-scale ocean circulation, biogeochemistry, and weather and climate variability. However, numerous challenges remain to accurately diagnose, observe, and simulate mesoscale air–sea interaction to quantify its impacts on large-scale processes. This article provides a comprehensive review of key aspects pertinent to mesoscale air–sea interaction, synthesizes current understanding with remaining gaps and uncertainties, and provides recommendations on theoretical, observational, and modeling strategies for future air–sea interaction research. The introduction of nanoparticles to intact plant cells is promising as a transporting technique of a wide range of functional molecules.Among various molecular delivery methods, femtosecond laser photoinjection possesses target selectivity at a single cell level and is potentiallyapplicable for many types of materials. However, for plant cells, the vacuoles’ turgor pressure and the thick cell wall limit the application ofphotoinjection to only small objects. In this work, we overcome these limitations by employing a single pulse irradiation from a femtosecondlaser amplifier. After laser irradiation on intact tobacco BY-2 cells, 80 nm fluorescent nanoparticles dispersed in a cell culture medium weresuccessfully injected into their cytoplasm. This breakthrough would lead to a vast utilization of nanoparticles containing functional moleculesfor single cell manipulation in plant physiological study and genetic engineering. Such an injection was observed even when the laser pulsewas focused neither on the cell wall nor on the cell membrane, but beside the cells. With these results, we suggest pore formation on the cellmembrane by instantaneous deformation induced by an intense femtosecond laser pulse as an injection mechanism of nanoparticles. Reportedphotomechanical effects of the amplified femtosecond laser on the permeability of the biological membrane would offer new perspectives inbiophotonics.

Femtosecond laser photoporation has become a popular method to deliver various kinds of molecules such as genes, proteins, and fluorescent dyes into single mammalian cells. However, this method is not easily applied to plant cells because their cell wall and turgor pressure prevent the delivery, especially for larger molecules than the mesh size of the cell wall. This work is the first demonstration of the efficient photoinjection of megadalton molecules into a cytoplasm of an intact single plant cell by employing a femtosecond laser amplifier under moderate enzyme treatment conditions. The intense femtosecond laser pulse effectively formed a pore on the cell wall and membrane of Tobacco BY-2, and 2 MDa dextran molecules were introduced through the pore. Along with the pore formation, induced mechanical tensile stresses on BY-2 cells were considered to increase permeability of the cell membrane and enhance the uptake of large molecules. Moreover, the moderate enzyme treatment partially degraded the cell wall thereby facilitating the increase of the molecular introduction efficiency.

Maize (Zea mays) root quiescent center (QC) cells deteriorate during hypoxic treatment, halting root growth. Over-expression of the Phytoglobin1 ZmPgb1.1 is known to alleviate these effects through the retention of the auxin flow along the root profile required for QC specification. To elucidate QC-specific hypoxia responses and whether ZmPgb1.1 exercises a direct role on QC stem cells, we performed a QC functionality test. This was done by estimating the ability of QCs to regenerate a root in-vitro in a hypoxic environment. Hypoxia decreased the functionality of the QCs by depressing the expression of several genes participating in the synthesis and response of auxin. This was accompanied by a decrease in DR5 signal in oxygen deprived QCs and a consequent suppression of QC markers and genes of jasmonic acid (JA) synthesis and signaling. Over-expression of ZmPgb1.1 mitigated all these responses. Through pharmacological alterations of auxin and JA (through 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid and methyl jasmonate, respectively), it is demonstrated that both compounds are required for QC functionality under hypoxia, and that JA acts downstream of auxin during QC regeneration. A model is proposed whereby the ZmPgb1.1 maintenance of auxin in hypoxic QCs is determinant for the retention of their functionality, with JA supporting the regeneration of roots from the QCs.

Background: Biological invasions threaten the functioning of ecosystems, biodiversity, and human well-being by degrading ecosystem services and eliciting massive economic costs. The European Union has historically been a hub for cultural development and global trade, and thus, has extensive opportunities for the introduction and spread of alien species. While reported costs of biological invasions to some member states have been recently assessed, ongoing knowledge gaps in taxonomic and spatio-temporal data suggest that these costs were considerably underestimated. Results: We used the latest available cost data in InvaCost (v4.1)—the most comprehensive database on the costs of biological invasions—to assess the magnitude of this underestimation within the European Union via projections of current and future invasion costs. We used macroeconomic scaling and temporal modelling approaches to project available cost information over gaps in taxa, space, and time, thereby producing a more complete estimate for the European Union economy. We identified that only 259 out of 13,331 (~ 1%) known invasive alien species have reported costs in the European Union. Using a conservative subset of highly reliable, observed, country-level cost entries from 49 species (totalling US$4.7 billion; 2017 value), combined with the establishment data of alien species within European Union member states, we projected unreported cost data for all member states. Conclusions: Our corrected estimate of observed costs was potentially 501% higher (US$28.0 billion) than currently recorded. Using future projections of current estimates, we also identified a substantial increase in costs and costly species (US$148.2 billion) by 2040. We urge that cost reporting be improved to clarify the economic impacts of greatest concern, concomitant with coordinated international action to prevent and mitigate the impacts of invasive alien species in the European Union and globally.

Two decades of high-resolution satellite observations and climate modeling studies have indicated strong ocean–atmosphere coupled feedback mediated by ocean mesoscale processes, including semipermanent and meandrous SST fronts, mesoscale eddies, and filaments. The air–sea exchanges in latent heat, sensible heat, momentum, and carbon dioxide associated with this so-called mesoscale air–sea interaction are robust near the major western boundary currents, Southern Ocean fronts, and equatorial and coastal upwelling zones, but they are also ubiquitous over the global oceans wherever ocean mesoscale processes are active. Current theories, informed by rapidly advancing observational and modeling capabilities, have established the importance of mesoscale and frontal-scale air–sea interaction processes for understanding large-scale ocean circulation, biogeochemistry, and weather and climate variability. However, numerous challenges remain to accurately diagnose, observe, and simulate mesoscale air–sea interaction to quantify its impacts on large-scale processes. This article provides a comprehensive review of key aspects pertinent to mesoscale air–sea interaction, synthesizes current understanding with remaining gaps and uncertainties, and provides recommendations on theoretical, observational, and modeling strategies for future air–sea interaction research.

Plant responses to salinity and herbivory have been primarily studied separately. However, in natural settings, plants are affected simultaneously by several factors. Because of an overlap in signaling pathways between plant responses to salinity and to herbivory, responses to one factor could be enhanced or lessened by exposure to the other. To investigate the interaction of the responses to these two stress factors, four cultivars of hybrid poplars (Populus) were used to determine if salt tolerance affects resistance to insect herbivory by Orgyia leucostigma. Hybrid poplar seedlings in hydroponics were exposed to 0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl for either two- or three-week treatment periods. Salt exposure resulted in decreased leaf photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance, while chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll a, lignin, phenolic compounds, proline, and glycine betaine content of leaves were not affected by salinity. Jasmonic acid (Ile) was found to increase in Walker cultivar at the lowest salt concentration but was not affected at the highest salt concentration. Elemental composition varied between the four cultivars, as noted between leaves that expanded either prior to or during salt exposure at the highest concentration. This included increased nitrogen (Only in Can Am and Okanese pre-salt treatment leaves) and phosphorus (Only in Assiniboine and Walker post-salt treatment leaves), while calcium contents decreased regardless of leaf age/position on the plant. Sodium content increased regardless of leaf age/position on the plant of all cultivars at 50 mM NaCl except for Okanese plants. Constitutive and induced resistance to herbivores, estimated from leaf disc feeding assays were not significantly affected by salinity despite changes in the nutritional value of salt-exposed leaves (cultivar dependent: increase or decrease in total soluble carbohydrates, decrease in proteins, and increase in Na/K ratio). To examine the function of phytoglobin 2 (Pgb2) on seed oil level in the oil-producing crop Brassica napus L., we generated transgenic plants in which BnPgb2 was over-expressed in the seeds using the cruciferin1 promoter. Over-expression of BnPgb2 elevated the amount of oil, which showed a positive relationship with the level of BnPgb2, without altering the oil nutritional value, as evidenced by the lack of major changes in composition of fatty acids (FA), and key agronomic traits. Two key transcription factors, LEAFY COTYLEDON1 (LEC1) and WRINKLED1 (WRI1), known to promote the synthesis of fatty acids (FA) and potentiate oil accumulation, were induced in BnPgb2 over-expressing seeds. The concomitant induction of several enzymes of sucrose metabolism, SUCROSE SYNTHASE1 (SUS) 1 and 3, FRUCTOSE BISPHOSPHATE ALDOLASE (FPA), and PHOSPHOGLYCERATE KINASE (PGK), and starch synthesis, ADP-GLUCOSE PHOSPHORYLASE (AGPase) suggests that BnPgb2 favors sugar mobilization for FA production. The two plastid FA biosynthetic enzymes SUBUNIT A OF ACETYL-CoA CARBOXYLASE (ACCA2), and MALONYL-CoA:ACP TRANSACYLASE (MCAT) were also up-regulated by the over-expression of BnPgb2. The requirement of BnPgb2 for oil deposition was further evidenced in natural germplasm by the higher levels of BnPgb2 in seeds of high-oil genotypes relative to their low-oil counterparts.

Biological invasions are a global challenge that has received insufficient attention. Recently available cost syntheses have provided policy- and decision makers with reliable and up-to-date information on the economic impacts of biological invasions, aiming to motivate effective management. The resultant InvaCost database is now publicly and freely accessible and enables rapid extraction of monetary cost information. This has facilitated knowledge sharing, developed a more integrated and multidisciplinary network of researchers, and forged multidisciplinary collaborations among diverse organizations and stakeholders. Over 50 scientific publications so far have used the database and have provided detailed assessments of invasion costs across geographic, taxonomic, and spatiotemporal scales. These studies have provided important information that can guide future policy and legislative decisions on the management of biological invasions while simultaneously attracting public and media attention. We provide an overview of the improved availability, reliability, standardization, and defragmentation of monetary costs; discuss how this has enhanced invasion science as a discipline; and outline directions for future development.

Biological invasions pose a growing threat to ecosystems, biodiversity, and socio-economic interests. In the European Union, the introduction of non-native species through trade, tourism, and other pathways has led to unintended consequences. Among these non-native species, a subset exhibits negative impacts and is commonly referred to as ‘invasive’. However, the number of non-native species and the proportion considered invasive vary across different member states of the European Union. Classifications and definitions of invasive species also differ among countries potentially leading to an underrepresentation. Here, we use Germany as a case study to highlight gaps in invasive species classifications. The number of non-native species reported as invasive in Germany remains low (~ 14%) compared to other European Union member states (~ 22%), despite Germany’s strong economy, significant research investments, and well-established trade networks. This disparities may be attributed to complex and multifaceted factors, encompassing differences in classifications, variations in research effort and focus, and diverse national priorities. We further propose that the impacts of non-native species on resources and biodiversity may be more likely to be overlooked, principally in large economies reliant on international trade, such as Germany. This oversight could negatively affect conservation efforts and funding for research aimed at improving understanding invasive species threats. We suggest that this underreporting may stem from a focus on maintaining economic growth, which might have taken precedence over addressing the potential ecological and economic impacts of invasive species.

Several modern textbooks report that, thanks to the availability of heteroskedasticity robust standard errors, one observes the near-death of Weighted Least Squares (WLS) in cross-sectional applied work. We argue in this paper that it is actually possible to estimate regression parameters at least as precisely as Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and WLS, even when using a misspecified parametric model for conditional heteroskedasticity. Our analysis is valid for a general regression framework (including Instrumental Variables and Nonlinear Regression) as long as the regression is defined by a conditional expectation condition. The key is to acknowledge, as first pointed out by Cragg (1992) that, when the user-specific heteroskedasticity model is misspecified, WLS has to be modified depending on a choice of some univariate target for estimation. Moreover, targeted WLS can be improved by properly combining moment equations for OLS and WLS respectively. Efficient GMM must be regularized to take into account the possible multicollinearity of estimating equations when errors terms are actually nearly homoscedastic.

As a network of researchers we release an open-access database (EUSEDcollab) of water discharge and suspended sediment yield time series records collected in small to medium sized catchments in Europe. EUSEDcollab is compiled to overcome the scarcity of open-access data at relevant spatial scales for studies on runoff, soil loss by water erosion and sediment delivery. Multi-source measurement data from numerous researchers and institutions were harmonised into a common time series and metadata structure. Data reuse is facilitated through accompanying metadata descriptors providing background technical information for each monitoring station setup. Across ten European countries, EUSEDcollab covers over 1600 catchment years of data from 245 catchments at event (11 catchments), daily (22 catchments) and monthly (212 catchments) temporal resolution, and is unique in its focus on small to medium catchment drainage areas (median = 43 km2, min = 0.04 km2, max = 817 km2) with applicability for soil erosion research. We release this database with the aim of uniting people, knowledge and data through the European Union Soil Observatory (EUSO).
