The layered, air-stable van der Waals antiferromagnetic compound CrSBr exhibits pronounced coupling between its optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. As an example, exciton dynamics can be significantly influenced by lattice vibrations through exciton-phonon coupling. Using low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy, we demonstrate the effective coupling between excitons and phonons in nanometer-thick CrSBr. By careful analysis, we identify that the satellite peaks predominantly arise from the interaction between the exciton and an optical phonon with a frequency of 118 cm-1 (~14.6 meV) due to the out-of-plane vibration of Br atoms. Power-dependent and temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements support exciton-phonon coupling and indicate a coupling between magnetic and optical properties, suggesting the possibility of carrier localization in the material. The presence of strong coupling between the exciton and the lattice may have important implications for the design of light-matter interactions in magnetic semiconductors and provide insights into the exciton dynamics in CrSBr. This highlights the potential for exploiting exciton-phonon coupling to control the optical properties of layered antiferromagnetic materials.

We present a comprehensive timing analysis on the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0440.9+4431 using observations from \textit{NICER} and \textit{Insight}-HXMT during the 2022--2023 outburst. The power density spectrum (PDS) of RX J0440.9+4431 exhibits typical aperiodic variability in X-ray flux across a wide frequency range. During a super-critical accretion state, we detect quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at 0.2--0.5\,Hz in the light curves of five pulses for RX J0440.9+4431. The observed QPOs manifest during flares, while the flares appear at the peaks of the pulse profiles on a timescale of seconds and are primarily caused by an increase in hard photons. These flares can be explained by increased material ingestion in the accretion column at a fixed phase, primarily generating hard photons. Alternatively, an increase in accretion rate, independent of phase, may result in highly beamed hard photons within the accretion column, causing the flares. We argue the origin of QPOs to instabilities within the accretion flow. Additionally, we find that the break frequencies in the noise power spectra align well with $\propto L_{\mathrm{x}}^{3 / 7}$ across three orders of magnitude in the luminosity, which points to a relatively strong magnetic field in RX J0440.9+4431, estimated to be \textasciitilde$10^{13}$\,G., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. We report the phase-resolved spectral results of the first Galactic Pulsating Ultra-Luminous X-ray source (PULX) Swift J0243.6+6124, modeling at its 2017-2018 outburst peak using data collected by the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT). The broad energy coverage of Insight-HXMT allows us to obtain more accurate spectral continuum to reduce the coupling of broad iron line profiles with other components. We use three different continuum spectrum models but obtain similar iron line results. For the first time, we detected the pulse characteristics of the broad iron line in a PULX. The variation in width and intensity of this iron line with $\sigma \sim 1.2-1.5$\,keV has a phase offset of about 0.25 from the pulse phase. We suggest that the uneven irradiation of the thick inner disk by the accretion column produces the modulated variation of the broad iron line. In addition, the non-pulsed narrow line is suggested to come from the outer disk region.

Spin–orbit coupling forms the physical basis for quantum materials with non-trivial topology and potential spintronics applications. The Rashba interaction is a textbook model of spin–orbit interactions, with charge carriers undergoing linear, isotropic spin-splitting in momentum space. Recently, non-centrosymmetric semiconductors in the family BiTeX (X = Cl, Br, I) have been identified as exemplary Rashba materials due to the strong splitting of their bulk bands, yet a detailed investigation of their spin textures, and their relationships to local crystal symmetry, is currently lacking. We perform high-efficiency spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly image the spin texture of surface states of BiTeCl, and we find dramatic deviations from idealized behavior, including a reversal of the spin-polarization near the Fermi level. We show that this behavior can be described by higher-order contributions to the canonical Rashba model with the surface states localized to individual trilayers of the crystal. Due to the prominence of these effects near the Fermi level, they should have a strong impact on the spin-dependent transport of carriers.

Here, we define core piRNA clusters as genomic loci that show ubiquitous piRNA expression in both somatic and germline tissues. These core piRNA clusters are enriched for non-retroviral endogenous viral elements (nrEVEs) in antisense orientation and depend on key biogenesis factors, Veneno, Tejas, Yb, and Shutdown. Combined transcriptome and chromatin state analyses identify transcriptional readthrough as a conserved mechanism for cluster-derived piRNA biogenesis in the vector mosquitoes Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles gambiae. Comparative analyses between the two Aedes species suggest that piRNA clusters function as traps for nrEVEs, allowing adaptation to environmental challenges such as virus infection. Our systematic transcriptome and chromatin state analyses lay the foundation for studies of gene regulation, genome evolution, and piRNA function in these important vector species.

We investigate the dynamical properties of low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed from the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the early part of its 2018 outburst, when the system was in a bright hard state. To this aim, we use a series of observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope Insight-HXMT, and apply a wavelet decomposition (weighted wavelet Z-transforms) to the X-ray light-curve. We find that the QPO phenomenon is intermittent within each individual observation, with some sub-intervals where the oscillation is strongly detected (high root-mean-square amplitude) and others where it is weak or absent. The average life time of individual QPO segments is ~ 5 oscillation cycles, with a 3 sigma tail up to ~ 20 cycles. There is no substantial difference between the energy spectra during intervals with strong and weak/absent QPOs. We discuss two possible reasons for the intermittent QPO strength, within the precessing jet model previously proposed for MAXI J1820+070. In the rigid precession model, intermittent QPOs are predicted to occur with a coherence Q ~ a few when the disk alignment time-scale is only a few times the precession time-scale. Alternatively, we suggest that changes in oscillation amplitude can be caused by changes in the jet speed. We discuss a possible reason for the intermittent QPO strength, within the precessing jet model previously proposed for MAXI J1820+070: we suggest that changes in oscillation amplitude are caused by changes in the jet speed. We argue that a misaligned, precessing jet scenario is also consistent with other recent observational findings that suggest an oscillation of the Compton reflection component in phase with the QPOs., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

RX J0440.9+4431, a Be/X-ray binary, had its brightest outburst in 2022 since its discovery, with a peak X-ray flux of 2.25 Crab (as recorded by Swift/BAT, 15-50 keV). We analyze the timing properties of this giant outburst using data from Insight-HXMT and NICER, focusing on the evolution of the pulse profile and pulse fraction. We observe that when the luminosity reached around ~ 3*10^{37} er s^{-1}, a transition from double-peaked to single-peaked pulse profiles occurred across the energy range, with the peak of the low-energy profile aligning gradually with the peak of the high-energy profile. This change indicates a transition from subcritical to supercritical accretion. Additionally, we found a concave in the pulse fraction as a function of energy around 20-30 keV throughout the entire outburst period. Compared to the low luminosity, the concave becomes weaker in high luminosities, and overall, the pulse fraction is higher. We propose that this concave could be caused by the scattering of high-energy photons by the atmosphere of a neutron star, leading to a dilution of the pulse fraction. As the accretion reaches the supercritical state, the accretion column height increases, resulting in a larger direct component of strongly beamed X-ray flux, and an elevated pulse fraction., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

MAXI J181-195 is a newly discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar that went outburst in June 2022. Through timing analysis with NICER and NuSTAR observations, we find a transient modulation at ~2.5 Hz during the decay period of MAXI J1816-195. The modulation is strongly correlated with a spectral hardening, and its fractional rms amplitude increases with energy. These results suggest that the modulation is likely to be produced in an unstable corona. In addition, the presence of the modulation during thermonuclear bursts indicates that it may originate from a disk-corona where the optical depth is likely the main factor affecting the modulation, rather than temperature. Moreover, we find significant reflection features in the spectra observed simultaneously by NICER and NuSTAR, including a relativistically broadened Fe-K line around 6-7 keV, and a Compton hump in the 10-30 keV energy band. The radius of the inner disc is constrained to be Rin = (1.04-1.23) RISCO based on reflection modeling of the broadband spectra. Assuming that the inner disc is truncated at the magnetosphere radius, we estimate that the magnetic field strength is < 4.67 * 10e8 G., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

We report the X-ray timing results of the black hole candidate MAXI J1820+070 during its 2018 outburst using the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission (NICER) observations. Low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are detected in the low/hard state and the hard intermediate state, which lasted for about 90 days. Thanks to the large effective area of Insight-HXMT at high energies and NICER at low energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of the LFQPO characteristics and phase lags from 0.2 keV to 200 keV, which has never been explored by previous missions. We find that the centroid frequency of the LFQPOs do not change significantly with energy, while the full width at half maximum (FWHM) and fractional rms show a complex evolution with energy. The LFQPO phase lags at high energies and low energies show consistent energy-dependence relations taking the ~2 keV as reference. Our results suggest that the LFQPOs from high energy come from the LT precession of the relativistic jet, while the low-energy radiation is mainly from the perpendicular innermost regions of the accretion disk.

We report the evolution of the X-ray pulsations of EXO 2030+375 during its 2021 outburst using the observations from \textit{Insight}-HXMT. Based on the accretion torque model, we study the correlation between the spin frequency derivatives and the luminosity. Pulsations can be detected in the energy band of 1--160 keV. The pulse profile evolves significantly with luminosity during the outburst, leading to that the whole outburst can be divided into several parts with different characteristics. The evolution of the pulse profile reveals the transition between the super-critical (fan-beam dominated) and the sub-critical accretion (pencil-beam dominated) mode. From the accretion torque model and the critical luminosity model, based on a distance of 7.1 kpc, the inferred magnetic fields are $(0.41-0.74) \times 10^{12}$ G and $(3.48-3.96) \times 10^{12}$ G, respectively, or based on a distance of 3.6 kpc, the estimated magnetic fields are $(2.4-4.3) \times 10^{13}$ G and $(0.98-1.11)\times 10^{12}$ G, respectively. Two different sets of magnetic fields both support the presence of multipole magnetic fields of the NS.

A double-peak X-ray burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 was discovered as associated with the two radio pulses of FRB 200428 separated by 28.97+-0.02 ms. Precise measurements of the timing and spectral properties of the X-ray bursts are helpful for understanding the physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs). In this paper, we have reconstructed some information about the hard X-ray events, which were lost because the High Energy X-ray Telescope (HE) onboard the Insight-HXMT mission was saturated by this extremely bright burst, and used the information to improve the temporal and spectral analyses of the X-ray burst. The arrival times of the two X-ray peaks by fitting the new Insight-HXMT/HE lightcurve with multi-Gaussian profiles are 2.77+-0.45 ms and 34.30+-0.56 ms after the first peak of FRB 200428, respectively, while these two parameters are 2.57+-0.52 ms and 32.5+-1.4 ms if the fitting profile is a fast rise and exponential decay function. The spectrum of the two X-ray peaks could be described by a cutoff power-law with cutoff energy ~60 keV and photon index ~1.4, the latter is softer than that of the underlying bright and broader X-ray burst when the two X-ray peaks appeared., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Two-dimensional (2D) local discriminant analysis is one of the popular techniques for image representation and recognition. Conventional 2D methods extract features of images relying on the affinity relationships among samples. However, affinity graph learning and dimensionality reduction are two separate processes, and the predefined affinity graph is sensitive to noisy and irrelevant features. To this end, we propose a graph embedding model, named as Two-Dimensional Discriminant Projection with Adaptive Manifold Graph (2DDP-AMG). In our model, the local manifold structure of data is characterized by the k-nearest-neighbor (kNN) graph within each class. More importantly, the above graph is updated adaptively in the process of dimensionality reduction to eliminate the interference of irrelevant features and noise. Furthermore, F-norm is introduced to measure the distance between homogeneous samples and improve the robustness of the model to outliers. To solve this model, an efficient algorithm is developed to update each variable iteratively. Extensive experiments conducted on benchmark face image data sets show the superiority and robustness of our model compared to state-of-the-art alternatives.

Electrocatalysis for the oxygen evolution reactions (OER) has attracted much attention due to its important role in water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Therefore, designing highly efficient and low-cost catalysts for OER process is essential as the conventional catalysts still rely on precious metals. Transition metal-based compounds have been widely investigated as active OER catalysts, and renewed interest in the high valence metals engineered compounds has been achieved for superior catalytic activity and stability. However, an in-depth understanding of the construction strategies and induced effects for the high valence metals engineered catalysts is still lacking and desired. In this review, we have summarized the construction strategies of high valence metals as dopants or formed heterostructures with the iron/cobalt/nickel (Fe/Co/Ni)-based catalysts. Then the induced effects on Fe/Co/Ni-based catalysts by incorporating high valence metals, e.g., accelerating the surface reconstruction, forming amorphous structure, generating vacancies/defects, and acting as stabilizers, are highlighted. The impacts of high valence metals on OER performance are elucidated based on different elements, including molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), cerium (Ce), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr). The correlations of construction strategies, induced effects, catalytic activity and OER reaction pathways are elaborated. Finally, the remaining challenges for further enhancements of OER performance induced by high valence metals are presented.

Electrocatalysts for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are crucial for energy conversion and storage devices. Single-atom catalysts with maximized metal utilization and altered electronic structure are the most promising alternatives to replace current benchmark precious metals. However, the atomic level understanding of the functional role for each species at the anchoring sites is still unclear and poorly elucidated. Herein, we report Fe single atom catalysts with the sulfur and oxygen functional groups near the atomically dispersed metal centers (Fe1/NSOC) for highly efficient ORR. The Fe1/NSOC delivers a half-wave potential of 0.92 V vs. RHE, which is much better than those of commercial Pt/C (0.88 V), Fe single atoms on N-doped carbon (Fe1/NC, 0.89 V) and most reported nonprecious metal catalysts. The spectroscopic measurements reveal that the presence of sulfur group induces the formation of epoxy groups near the FeN4S2 centers, which not only modulate the electronic structure of Fe single atoms but also participate the catalytic process to improve the kinetics. The density functional theory calculations demonstrate the existence of sulfur and epoxy group engineer the charges of Fe reactive center and facilitate the reductive release of OH* (rate-limiting step), thus boosting the overall oxygen reduction efficiency.

Developing efficient and robust catalysts to replace Pt group metals for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is conducive to achieving highly efficient energy conversion. Here, we develop a general ion exchange strategy to construct highly efficient ORR catalysts consisting of various atomically dispersed metal atoms anchored on N-doped porous carbon (M-SAs/NC) to investigate the atomic structure-catalytic activity relationship. The structure characterization results demonstrated that the achieved atomic structure varied due to the presence of different metal centers. Mn-SAs/NC consists of MnN3O1 centers, in which the Mn single atoms are stabilized by 3 N and 1 O. In contrast, the center metals in Fe-/Co-/Cu single-atom catalysts are coordinated by merely N atoms. Mn-SAs/NC delivers superior performance for the ORR with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.91 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH solution, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst and the control Fe-/Co-/Cu single-atom catalysts. Furthermore, Mn-SAs/NC also shows excellent methanol tolerance and stability up to 5000 cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mn single atom catalysts with MnN3O1 centers contributed to the superior ORR performance with lower energy barriers and optimized adsorption capacity of intermediates. These findings provide insights into the design and development of specific coordinated structures of atomically dispersed catalysts to facilitate the practical applications of energy conversion.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) provides a promising way to convert CO2 to chemicals. The multicarbon (C2+) products, especially ethylene, are of great interest due to their versatile industrial applications. However, selectively reducing CO2 to ethylene is still challenging as the additional energy required for the C-C coupling step results in large overpotential and many competing products. Nonetheless, mechanistic understanding of the key steps and preferred reaction pathways/conditions, as well as rational design of novel catalysts for ethylene production have been regarded as promising approaches to achieving the highly efficient and selective CO2RR. In this review, we first illustrate the key steps for CO2RR to ethylene (e.g., CO2 adsorption/activation, formation of *CO intermediate, C-C coupling step), offering mechanistic understanding of CO2RR conversion to ethylene. Then the alternative reaction pathways and conditions for the formation of ethylene and competitive products (C1 and other C2+ products) are investigated, guiding the further design and development of preferred conditions for ethylene generation. Engineering strategies of Cu-based catalysts for CO2RR-ethylene are further summarized, and the correlations of reaction mechanism/pathways, engineering strategies and selectivity are elaborated. Finally, major challenges and perspectives in the research area of CO2RR are proposed for future development and practical applications.

While many state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been realized on rigid glass substrates, demonstrating perovskite cells on other types of surfaces may give rise to new applications. Here, we successfully demonstrate efficient PSCs on steel. The role of an indium tin oxide interlayer as a barrier against iron diffusion from the steel substrate is elucidated. We further show that the performance of the perovskite device on steel can be improved by using an n-octylammonium bromide passivation layer, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 17.1%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest reported for perovskite cells on steel. This work demonstrates the robust design necessary for PSCs on steel and the versatility of PSCs. It may also inspire work on other types of surfaces beyond glass, paving the way for a wider range of applications.

Here we present a detailed study of the broadband noise in the power density spectra of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the hard state of its 2018 outburst, using the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) observations. The broadband noise shows two main humps, which might separately correspond to variability from a variable disk and two Comptonization regions. We fitted the two humps with multiple Lorentzian functions and studied the energy-dependent properties of each component up to 100--150 keV and their evolution with spectral changes. The lowest frequency component is considered as the sub-harmonic of QPO component and shows different energy dependence compared with other broadband noise components. We found that although the fractional rms of all the broadband noise components mainly decrease with energy, their rms spectra are different in shape. Above $\sim$ 20--30 keV, the characteristic frequencies of these components increase sharply with energy, meaning that the high-energy component is more variable on short timescales. Our results suggest that the hot inner flow in MAXI J1820+070 is likely to be inhomogeneous. We propose a geometry with a truncated accretion disk, two Comptonization regions.

Using the observations of the high-energy (HE) detector of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) for Scorpius X-1 in 2018, we search for hard X-ray tails in the hard X-ray spectra in ~30-200 keV. The hard X-ray tails are found throughout the Z-track on the hardness-intensity diagram and they harden and fade away from the horizontal branch (HB), through the normal branch (NB), to the flaring branch (FB). Comparing the hard X-ray spectra between Cyg X-1 and Sco X-1, it is concluded that the hard X-ray spectrum of Cyg X-1 shows high-energy cutoff, implying a hot corona in it, but the high-energy cutoff does not reveal in the hard X-ray spectrum of Sco X-1. Jointly fitting the HE spectrum with the medium-energy and low-energy spectra of Sco X-1 in ~2-200 keV, it is suggested that the upscattering Comptonization of the neutron star (NS) emission photons by the energetic free-falling electrons onto the NS or by the hybrid electrons in the boundary layer between the NS and the accretion disk could be responsible for the hard X-ray tails of Sco X-1 on the HB and NB, but neither of the two mechanisms can be responsible for the hard X-ray tail on the FB. We present a spectral study of the black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 during its 2019 outburst, based on monitoring observations with Insight-HXMT and Swift. Throughout the outburst, the spectra are well fitted with power-law plus disk-blackbody components. In the soft-intermediate and soft states, we observed the canonical relation L ~ T_in^4 between disk luminosity L and peak colour temperature T_in, with a constant inner radius R_in (traditionally identified with the innermost stable circular orbit). At other stages of the outburst cycle, the behaviour is more unusual, inconsistent with the canonical outburst evolution of black hole transients. In particular, during the hard rise, the apparent inner radius is smaller than in the soft state (and increasing), and the peak colour temperature is higher (and decreasing). This anomalous behaviour is found even when we model the spectra with self-consistent Comptonization models, which take into account the up-scattering of photons from the disk component into the power-law component. To explain both those anomalous trends at the same time, we suggest that the hardening factor for the inner disk emission was larger than the canonical value of ~1.7 at the beginning of the outburst. A more physical trend of radii and temperature evolution requires a hardening factor evolving from ~3.5 at the beginning of the hard state to ~1.7 in the hard intermediate state. This could be evidence that the inner disk was in the process of condensing from the hot, optically thin medium and had not yet reached a sufficiently high optical depth for its emission spectrum to be described by the standard optically-thick disk solution., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted by ApJ

We execute a detailed spectral-timing study of Cygnus X--1 in the low/hard, intermediate and high/soft states with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope observations. The broad band energy spectra show that the disk truncates at a radius related to the spectral state as well as the input spin and inclination parameters. Given \textit a$_*$=0.9696 and \textit{i}=42.47\degree, the inner boundary of the disk stays quite close to the ISCO and moves inward slightly as the source softens. Through studying of PDS, rms and Fourier-frequency component resolved spectroscopy of the three typical states, we find that the X-ray variations are generated in two different regions. We discover that the major role that contributes to the X-ray variation is the hot corona rather than the accretion disk. We suggest a scenario with different corona geometry for each state based on the truncated disk geometry in which the corona wraps up the disk to form a sandwich geometry in the low/hard state, and then gradually moves away from the disk in direction that is perpendicular to the disk until forming a lamppost-like geometry in the high/soft state., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, and 4 tables, submitted to ApJ

Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural clines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale.

Like in vertebrates, virus-host protein-protein interactions are essential for viral replication and immune evasion in the mosquito vector. Here, 79 mosquito host proteins interacting with DENV non-structural proteins NS1 and NS5 were identified by label-free mass spectrometry, followed by a functional screening. We confirmed interactions with host factors previously observed in mammals, such as the oligosaccharyltransferase complex, and we identified protein-protein interactions that seem to be specific for mosquitoes. Among the interactors, the double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) binding protein Loquacious (Loqs), an RNA interference (RNAi) cofactor, was found to be essential for efficient replication of DENV and Zika virus (ZIKV) in mosquito cells. Loqs did not affect viral RNA stability or translation of a DENV replicon and its proviral activity was independent of its RNAi regulatory activity. Interestingly, Loqs colocalized with DENV dsRNA replication intermediates in infected cells and directly interacted with high affinity with DENV RNA in the 3' untranslated region in vitro (KD = 48-62 nM). Our study provides an interactome for DENV NS1 and NS5 and identifies Loqs as a key proviral host factor in mosquitoes. We propose that DENV hijacks a factor of the RNAi mechanism for replication of its own RNA.

Yet, our knowledge of the molecular interactions of arboviruses with their mosquito hosts is incomplete. Here, we aimed to identify and characterize novel host genes that control arbovirus replication in Aedes mosquitoes. RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are well-known to regulate immune signaling pathways in all kingdoms of life. We therefore performed a knockdown screen targeting 461 genes encoding predicted RBPs in Aedes aegypti Aag2 cells and identified 15 genes with antiviral activity against Sindbis virus. Amongst these, the three DEAD-box RNA helicases AAEL004419/Dhx15, AAEL008728, and AAEL004859 also acted as antiviral factors in dengue and CHIKV infections. Here, we explored the mechanism of Dhx15 in regulating an antiviral transcriptional response in mosquitoes by silencing Dhx15 in Aag2 cells followed by deep-sequencing of poly-A enriched RNAs. Dhx15 knockdown in uninfected and CHIKV-infected cells resulted in differential expression of 856 and 372 genes, respectively. Interestingly, amongst the consistently downregulated genes, glycolytic process was the most enriched gene ontology (GO) term as the expression of all core enzymes of the glycolytic pathway was reduced, suggesting that Dhx15 regulates glycolytic function. A decrease in lactate production indicated that Dhx15 silencing indeed functionally impaired glycolysis. Modified rates of glycolytic metabolism have been implicated in controlling the replication of several classes of viruses and strikingly, infection of Aag2 cells with CHIKV by itself also resulted in the decrease of several glycolytic genes. Neisseria species are frequently identified in the bronchiectasis microbiome, but they are regarded as respiratory commensals. Using a combination of human cohorts, next-generation sequencing, systems biology, and animal models, we show that bronchiectasis bacteriomes defined by the presence of Neisseria spp. associate with poor clinical outcomes, including exacerbations. Neisseria subflava cultivated from bronchiectasis patients promotes the loss of epithelial integrity and inflammation in primary epithelial cells. In vivo animal models of Neisseria subflava infection and metabolipidome analysis highlight immunoinflammatory functional gene clusters and provide evidence for pulmonary inflammation. The murine metabolipidomic data were validated with human Neisseria-dominant bronchiectasis samples and compared with disease in which Pseudomonas-, an established bronchiectasis pathogen, is dominant. Metagenomic surveillance of Neisseria across various respiratory disorders reveals broader importance, and the assessment of the home environment in bronchiectasis implies potential environmental sources of exposure. Thus, we identify Neisseria species as pathobionts in bronchiectasis, allowing for improved risk stratification in this high-risk group.

The oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFG) on the coal surface affect the adsorption effect of hydrocarbon oily collectors (HOC). An investigation of the interaction between the HOC and OCFG in the absence and presence of water is conducive to understanding the effect of OCFG type on the adsorption of HOC on the coal surface. In this paper, FTIR analysis was used to analyze the OCFG type of coal surface. The adsorption behavior of HOC on different OCFG surfaces was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated the presence of OCFG such as -OH, -COOH, -C=O, and -COCH₃ on the coal surface. In conditions without water, the effect of OCFG on HOC adsorption capability follows the order -COOH > -C=O > -OH > -COCH₃. In an aqueous solution, the effect of OCFG on HOC adsorption capability follows the order -C=O>-COCH₃>-OH>-COOH. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of OCFG is the key factor that affects the adsorption effect of HOC. In other words, the adsorption effect of HOC on the coal surface in an aqueous solution does not depend on the strength of the interaction between the OCFG and HOC in the absence of water, but on the hydrophilicity of the OCFG. The -COOH and -OH on the coal surface are not conducive to the adsorption of HOC onto the coal surface. Masking the -COOH and -OH of the coal surface is beneficial in improving the coal flotation performance with HOC as a collector.

Common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are predicted to collectively explain 40-50% of phenotypic variation in human height, but identifying the specific variants and associated regions requires huge sample sizes1. Here, using data from a genome-wide association study of 5.4 million individuals of diverse ancestries, we show that 12,111 independent SNPs that are significantly associated with height account for nearly all of the common SNP-based heritability. These SNPs are clustered within 7,209 non-overlapping genomic segments with a mean size of around 90 kb, covering about 21% of the genome. The density of independent associations varies across the genome and the regions of increased density are enriched for biologically relevant genes. In out-of-sample estimation and prediction, the 12,111 SNPs (or all SNPs in the HapMap 3 panel2) account for 40% (45%) of phenotypic variance in populations of European ancestry but only around 10-20% (14-24%) in populations of other ancestries. Effect sizes, associated regions and gene prioritization are similar across ancestries, indicating that reduced prediction accuracy is likely to be explained by linkage disequilibrium and differences in allele frequency within associated regions. Finally, we show that the relevant biological pathways are detectable with smaller sample sizes than are needed to implicate causal genes and variants. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive map of specific genomic regions that contain the vast majority of common height-associated variants. Although this map is saturated for populations of European ancestry, further research is needed to achieve equivalent saturation in other ancestries.

This article describes a series of more than 20 new compounds formed by the combination of 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid (H4thba) with metal ions in the presence of a base, with structures that include discrete molecular units, chains, and two- and three-dimensional networks. As a result of the presence of two ortho-hydroxy groups, H4thba is a relatively strong acid (pKa1 = 1.68). The carboxylate group in H3thba- is therefore considerably less basic than most carboxylates with intramolecular hydrogen bonds, conferring a rigid planar geometry upon the anion. These characteristics of H3thba- significantly impact upon the way it interacts with metal ions. In s-block metal compounds, where the interaction of the metal centres with the carboxylate O atoms is essentially ionic, the anion bonds to up to three metal centres via a variety of binding modes. In cases where the metal ion is able to form directional coordinate bonds, however, the carboxylate group tends to bond in a monodentate mode, interacting with just one metal centre in the syn mode. A dominant influence on the structures of the complexes seems to be the face-to-face stacking of the aromatic rings, which creates networks containing layers of metal-oxygen polyhedra that participate in hydrogen bonding. This investigation was undertaken, in part, by a group of secondary school students as an educational exercise designed to introduce school students to the technique of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and enhance their understanding of primary and secondary bonding.

The properties of flash-roasted products from low-grade refractory iron tailings (IGRIT) and the improved method for their magnetic separation index were investigated by the MLA, XRD, iron phase analysis, and magnetic separation test. The results show the siderite and hematite in the IGRIT have been converted to magnetic iron after the flash roasting treatment with a time of 3‐5 s; magnetic iron in roasted products has a monomeric dissociation of 37.20%, and a 75‐100% exposed area of contiguous bodies as rich intergrowth was 29.83%, and that a 32.97 poor intergrowth; moreover, magnetic iron is mainly associated with muscovite and quartz. It is also found that the regrinding-magnetic separation (1500 Oe) treatment of the middling was beneficial to obtain more qualified iron concentrate products. Therefore, roasted products magnetic separation process in the absence/ presence of the middling regrinding-magnetic separation treatment obtains an iron concentrate with 60.10%/ 60.12% iron grade and 72.04%/81.13% iron recovery. The iron concentrate from the magnetic separation process with middling regrinding-magnetic separation can have a 9% higher recovery than the process without middling regrinding-magnetic separation. The work is significant for helping to improve the utilization of IGRIT.

High bandgap perovskite solar cells are integral to perovskite-based multi-junction tandem solar cells with efficiency potentials over 40%. However, at present, high bandgap perovskite devices underperform compared to their mid bandgap counterparts in terms of voltage outputs and fill factors resulting in lower than ideal efficiencies. Here, the low fill factor aspect of high bandgap perovskite is addressed by developing a cation-diffusion-based double-sided interface passivation scheme that simultaneously provides bulk passivation for a 1.75 eV perovskite cell that is also compatible with a p-i-n cell architecture. The champion cell achieves a record fill factor of 86.5% and a power conversion efficiency of 20.2%. Results of ionic distribution profiling, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction crystallography reveal evidence of cation diffusion from the surface perovskite passivation layer into bulk. The diffused cations reduce Shockley–Read–Hall recombination in the perovskite bulk and at the surfaces with the latter being more dominant as confirmed by light-intensity dependent and temperature-dependent open-circuit voltage measurements as well as thermal admittance spectroscopy. This concurrent bulk and surface passivation scheme renders record fill factor and efficiency in the double-side passivated cells. This provides new insights for future passivation strategies based on ionic diffusion of functionalized materials.

Designing electrocatalysts with excellent performance and affordable price is promising to accelerate the reaction process and large-scale application. At present, ruthenium (Ru)-based nanomaterials have shown similar catalytic activity but superior price demand compared to commercial Pt/C. This undoubtedly makes Ru-based nanomaterials a perfect candidate to replace advanced Pt catalysts. Significant progress is made in the rational design of Ru-based electrocatalysts, but an in-depth understanding of the engineering strategies and induced effects is still at an early stage. This review summarizes the modification strategies for enhancing the catalytic activity of Ru, including surface structure, metal element, nonmetal element, size, bimetallic oxides, and heterostructure engineering strategies. Then the induced electronic modulation effects generated by the intramolecular and intermolecular of the Ru-based nanomaterials are elucidated. Further, the application progress of engineered Ru-based nanomaterials for hydrogen and oxygen conversion reactions is highlighted, and the correlations of engineering strategies, catalytic activity, and reaction pathways are elaborated. Finally, challenges and prospects are presented for the future development and practical application of Ru-based nanomaterials.

Nanoceria has evolved as a promising nanomaterial due to its unique enzyme-like properties, including excellent oxidase mimetic activity, which significantly increases in the presence of fluoride ions. However, this significant increase in oxidase activity has never been utilised as a signal enhancer for the detection of biological analytes partly because of the lack of understanding of the mechanism involved in this process. In this study, we show that the surface oxidation state of cerium ions plays a very crucial role in different enzymatic activities, especially the oxidase mimetic activity by engineering nanoceria with three different surface Ce4+/Ce3+ compositions. Using DFT calculations combined with Bader charge analysis, it is demonstrated that stoichiometric ceria registers a higher oxidase mimetic activity than oxygen-deficient ceria with a low Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio due to a higher charge transfer from a substrate, 3,3',5,5' tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), to the ceria surface. We also show that the fluoride ions can significantly increase the charge transfer from the TMB surface to ceria irrespective of the surface Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio. Using this knowledge, we first compare the fluoride sensing properties of nanoceria with high Ce4+ and mixed Ce4+/Ce3+ oxidation states and further demonstrate that the linear detection range of fluoride ions can be extended to 1-10 ppm for nanoceria with mixed oxidation states. Then, we also demonstrate an assay for fluoride assisted detection of glutathione, an antioxidant with elevated levels during cancer, using nanoceria with a high surface Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio. The addition of fluoride ions in this assay allows the detection of glutathione in the linear range of 2.5-50 ppm with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.8 ppm. These studies not only underpin the role of the surface Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio in tuning the fluoride assisted boost in the oxidase mimetic activity of nanoceria but also its strategic application in designing better colourimetric

The method for the dynamical calculation of leaching and run-off of heavy metals from agricultural and natural soils has been improved on the basis of the most recent measurements and knowledge. The number of metals has been expanded to 14 and now includes next to the metal included previously (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) also models for As, Ba, Co, Cr, Mo, Sb, Se, V, and U. To this purpose Freundlich partition relations have been derived for these 14 metals. The vertical distribution of the reactive metals content in soil used to calculate the solution concentration has been revised using recently acquired data and auxiliary variables include the P content in the soil and the amount of Fe and Al oxides. Finally also the regional schematization of concentrations in the upper groundwater has been revised and extended with information on the 9 new metals. In the context of the national and international obligation to report the emissions and pollution of surface water, the diffuse source leaching and run-off of heavy metals from the soil to the surface water has been calculated using the revised model. For consistency, the data used for and results from the National Water Quality Model for nutrients have been used, De methode voor het dynamisch berekenen van de uit- en afspoeling van zware metalen uit landbouw- en natuurbodems is verbeterd op basis van de meest recente metingen en kennis. How can entrepreneurs protect their wellbeing during a crisis? Does engaging agility (namely, opportunity agility and planning agility) in response to adversity help entrepreneurs safeguard their wellbeing? Activated by adversity, agility may function as a specific resilience mechanism enabling positive adaption to crisis. We studied 3,162 entrepreneurs from 20 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic and found that more severe national lockdowns enhanced firm-level adversity for entrepreneurs and diminished their wellbeing. Moreover, entrepreneurs who combined opportunity agility with planning agility experienced higher wellbeing but planning agility alone lowered wellbeing. Entrepreneur agility offers a new agentic perspective to research on entrepreneur wellbeing.

We present a systematic analysis of type C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) observations of H 1743--322 throughout the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) era. We find that, while different outbursts have significant flux differences, they show consistent positive correlations between the QPO fractional root-mean-square (rms) amplitude and non-thermal fraction of the emission, which indicate an independence of the intrinsic QPO rms on individual outburst brightness in H 1743--322. However, the dependence of the QPO rms on frequency is different between the outburst rise and decay phases, where QPO fractional rms of the decay phase is significantly lower than that of the rise phase at low frequencies. The spectral analysis also reveals different ranges of coronal temperature between the two outburst stages. A semi-quantitative analysis shows that the Lense-Thirring precession model could be responsible for the QPO rms differences, requiring a variable coronal geometric shape. However, the variable-Comptonization model could also account for the findings. The fact that the rms differences and the hysteresis traces in the hardness-intensity diagram (HID) accompany each other indicates a connection between the two phenomena. Using wavelet analysis and power density spectrum, we investigate two transient quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in MAXI J1535$-$571 observed with Insight-HXMT. The transient QPOs have a centroid frequency of $\sim 10$ Hz with a FWHM $\sim 0.6$ Hz and an rms amplitude $\sim 14\%$. Energy spectra of QPO and non-QPO regimes are also separated and analyzed, and the spectra become softer with higher $E_{cut}$ in the non-QPO regime compared to the QPO regime. Our results suggest that the transient QPOs detected in MJD 58016 and 58017 are still the type-C QPO, and the source remains in its HIMS. The duration of all type-C QPO signals based on wavelet is positively correlated with the mean count rate above $\sim 10$ keV, implying appearance of QPOs in different time scales should be coupled with the corona. The transient QPO properties could be related to the jet or flares, perhaps the partial ejection of the corona is responsible for the disappearance of the type-C QPO., Comment: 10 pages, MNRAS in press

Cygnus X-1, as the first discovered black hole binary, is a key source for understanding the mechanisms of state transitions, and the scenarios of accretion in extreme gravity fields. We present a spectral-timing analysis of observations taken with the Insight-HXMT mission, focusing on the spectral-state dependent timing properties in the broad energy range of 1--150 keV, thus extending previous RXTE-based studies to both lower and higher energies. Our main results are the following: a) We successfully use a simple empirical model to fit all spectra, confirming that the reflection component is stronger in the soft state than in the hard state; b) The evolution of the total fractional root mean square (rms) depends on the selected energy band and the spectral shape, which is a direct result of the evolution of the power spectral densities (PSDs); c) In the hard/intermediate state, we see clear short-term variability features and a positive correlation between central frequencies of the variability components and the soft photon index $\Gamma_1$, also at energies above 15 keV. The power spectrum is dominated by red noise in the soft state instead. These behaviors can be traced to at least 90 keV; d) The coherence and the phase-lag spectra show different behaviors dependent on different spectral shapes., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, 1 table. accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We investigated the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) features in the accretion-powered X-ray pulsar Cen X-3 observed by Insight-HXMT. For two observations in 2020 when Cen X-3 was in an extremely soft state, the power density spectrum revealed the presence of obvious QPO features at $\sim$40 mHz with an averaged fractional rms amplitude of $\sim9\%$. We study the mHz QPO frequency and rms amplitude over orbital phases, and find that the QPO frequency is $\sim$33-39 mHz at the orbital phase of 0.1-0.4, increasing to $\sim$37-43 mHz in the orbital phase of 0.4-0.8, but has no strong dependence on X-ray intensity. We also carried out an energy-dependent QPO analysis, the rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs have a decreasing trend as the energy increases from 2 to 20 keV. In addition, the QPO time-lag analysis shows that the time delay is $\sim 20$ ms (a hard lag) in the range of $\sim$5-10 keV, and becomes negative (time lag of $-(20-70)$ ms) above $\sim 10$ keV. The different QPO theoretical models are summarized and discussed. In the end, we suggest that these energy-dependent timing features as well as the origin of mHz QPOs in Cen X-3 may be ascribed to an instability when the accretion disk is truncated near the corotation radius., Comment: 9 pages, MNRAS in press
