The construction industry in every nation is essential to the growth of the economy and its development. The industry is characterized by complex projects, unpredictable variables, and is dependent on many different stakeholders, which subject projects in this sector to a variety of risks that can have a significant impact on project delivery. Risks in construction projects in Nigeria can lead to cost overruns, schedules not being met, and low quality of the project. The concept of risk management involves the management of identified risks which reduces the likelihood of their occurrence and the consequences of adverse risks. A project may be delivered or deemed successful, but not meet the project performance objectives. The Nigerian construction industry has undergone incredible growth and progress; however, there have been numerous challenges that have prevented project performance, such as a lack of expertise, knowledge gaps, and a drought of experienced personnel. The study examines the various risk management practices and their impact on construction project performance. Project performance implies that the project objectives are met in terms of cost, schedule, and quality. A survey research method was adopted using a questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection on a five-point Likert scale. The questionnaire was designed to collect data relating to risk management’s impact on project performance. The questionnaires were also designed to collect data on risk identification as a risk management practice and its impact on project performance. A total of 85 questionnaires were administered and analyzed. The results from the study indicate a strong relationship between risk management practices and project performance.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic remains a significant global health challenge, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the prevalence rates are among the highest in the world. This study investigated the impact of beneficiary participation on the performance of an HIV peer education program implemented by the Rwanda Network of People Living with HIV (RRP+) in Gicumbi District from 2017 to 2020. Researchers examined three specific areas: project planning, implementation, and monitoring. Stakeholder and Engagement Theory alongside Participation Theory were reviewed. The study adopted a descriptive research design with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The total study population for this research was be 3,938 that included Recipients of Care (RoC) and stakeholders directly involved in the HIV peer education project implemented by the Rwanda Network of People Living with HIV (RRP+) in Gicumbi District, Rwanda, from 2017 to 2020. A mixed sampling approach was employed to select participants for this research. This approach involves a combination of probability and non-probability sampling methods. Therefore, the sample size calculated using the Yamane formula was 387 Recipients of Care (RoC) and stakeholders. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Findings indicated significant beneficiary involvement in strategic planning and annual plans, with mean scores of 3.78 and 3.50, respectively, on a 1-4 scale. Moderate familiarity with the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) (average 3.22) was observed. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant positive impact on Project Performance (p < 0.05). Beneficiaries reported satisfactory healthcare and psychosocial support (mean score 0.99) and moderate satisfaction with supportive supervision (mean score 1.62). Purpose: E-procurement is recognized globally as a tool for enhancing efficiency and transparency, with major intergovernmental bodies advocating its adoption. This study investigates the impact of electronic procurement (e-procurement) on project completion times in the Nigerian public sector. The research focuses on e-tendering, e-invoicing, and e-sourcing, hypothesizing their effects on project completion times. Theoretical Framework: The study employs a conceptual framework highlighting the interplay between e-procurement practices and government policies. Theoretical frameworks, including Innovation Diffusion Theory and Technology Acceptance Theory guided the study. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design to collect primary data from 361 procurement staff from four agencies in Abuja using a structured questionnaire. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Findings: The results indicate a positive relationship between e-procurement practices and project completion times, with e-invoicing having the most significant impact. However, the introduction of government e-procurement policies as a variable diminishes the individual effects of e-tendering, e-invoicing, and e-sourcing. Research, Practical & Social Implications: The study established a positive relationship between electronic procurement practices and project completion times, with higher implementation levels resulting in shorter project durations. However, organizations should evaluate their impact, balance oversight and efficiency. Originality/Value: By focusing specifically on the Nigerian public sector, testing clearly defined e-procurement elements, collecting robust primary data, and generating new context-specific evidence, this study makes an original, timely and valuable contribution to knowledge on the impact of e-procurement adoption.

Background: The continuous advancement of information technology has transformed how businesses and organizations carry out their day-to-day activities. Many people are choosing to work remotely because they are handling a significant number of human interactions through various virtual communication platforms. Remote work facilitates business growth and improves customer service, yet it presents its challenges, necessitating an investigation into virtual team morale to guarantee project success. Method: This study employed content analysis of readily available secondary data to examine the investigated phenomenon. Results: The study determined that the key elements for enhancing project success in virtual teams are technology adoption, an environment free from distractions, effective leadership, trust, communication, a well-defined task, active team engagement, and motivation. The study also found that morale strongly influences engagement and productivity in virtual teams. Therefore, when morale is high, virtual teams achieve their optimal performance. Conclusion: The research concluded that selecting the suitable technology for communication, assigning virtual team members with distinct roles and responsibilities, fostering a culture of accountability and trust within virtual teams, promoting efficient team collaboration, and motivating virtual team members are the most impactful tactics for enhancing employee engagement and performance in virtual teams.

This master thesis addresses the challenge of project performance in the Civil Engineering (CE) sector, emphasizing the significance of collaboration, communication, and understanding among interdisciplinary project teams. Focusing on the role of empathy in contractor-client collaborations, the study investigates the potential impact of serious gaming on enhancing the level of empathy of CE professionals. The research uses a mixed-method pre- and post-test design, utilizing a quasi-experimental approach without a control group. The study uses the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and the short version of the Empathy Quotient (EQ short) questionnaire to measure the individual self-reported level of empathy before and after participants engage in the serious game 'Fouten maken Moed.' A subscale of the IRI showed a slight decrease in the level of empathy that possibly can be explained by a growth in awareness. While quantitative analysis did not reveal a significant change in overall empathy scores, qualitative findings suggest positive influences on interpersonal dynamics, openness, and talkativeness among participants, aspects that relate to the concept of empathy. Despite the limitations that arise from researching a difficult to operationalise main concept (empathy), a small sample size and having no control group. It can still be concluded that the intervention, including the serious game, created an environment that was conducive for participants to share personal information and vulnerabilities, fostering a sense of approachability and relatability. It seems like the game can, if facilitated well, function as a context-setter for Project Follow Up (PFU) or Project Start Up (PSU) meetings, enhancing collaboration between contractors and clients. Public authorities are expected to provide a salient infrastructure network, with only limited financial resources. However, many of these infrastructure projects go over budget and, therefore, research about these cost overruns is necessary to better understand the dynamics at work and provide solutions. The success of every community initiative depends on its execution, which is closely tied to the planning process, the competency of managers, and the assistance they provide. This study tested the hypothesized relationship between project planning and project performance. Studying how the performance of the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Project (SRHR) Project in Bugesera District is impacted by resource planning, schedule planning, stakeholder planning, and scope planning is one of the particular aims of the study. Improper project start, planning, communication, and scheduling approaches have been identified as factors contributing to poor project performance in Rwanda over the last several years. However, not all projects can benefit from these methods; in Rwanda, for instance, SRHR initiatives suffer from a severe lack of planning, which makes it difficult and inefficient to tackle pressing problems with sexual health, family planning, and gender equality. We looked at resource-based theory, stakeholder theory, and the theory of change. Consequently, there are a total of 78 individuals that comprise the study's population. A combination of descriptive and correlational studies was carried out by the investigator. Methods for gathering information for the study included surveys, interviews, documentation, focus groups, and observational research. 78 people filled out the survey since they knew all the important details of the project's preparation, and 40 teenage females met in a focus group to talk about how well the project went. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data analysis were used. With an R square value of 0.664, we have a coefficient of determination. Despite the fact that the Rwanda Basic Education Board in partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has implemented the Soma Umenye Project through project control in terms of scheduling, financial resources, risk control and change control, its performance remains poor and critical.  In conducting this research, four objectives were: to effect of project schedule control on Soma Umenye project performance, to examine the effect of project resources control on Soma Umenye project performance, and to analyze the effect of project change control on Soma Umenye project performance. To achieve these objectives, literature reviewed on the subject matter including definitions of key concepts, conceptual review, theoretical framework, conceptual framework and research gap analysis, moreover both planned theory and contingency theories were used. Descriptive research design was used and also the target population of the study was 169 employees of Rwanda Basic Education Board and all of them a sample size of 169 employees were selected by using stratified sampling technique. Questionnaire, interview guide and documentation were used as tools of data collection. Data was processed through editing, coding and tabulation and the data was also analyzed by using descriptive statistics. Projects in Kigali City were poorly implemented due to misappropriation of public funds and insufficient measurement of project performance, especially in subdivisions and surrounding villages, leading to project failure. In directing this research project, two purposes were set: to assess the impact of financial resource management planning on project performance in Kigali City and to examine the impact of financial resource control on project performance in Kigali City. Both financial literacy and resource dependency theories were used, furthermore in order to achieve these objectives, literature was reviewed on the subject matter including definitions of key concepts, conceptual review, theoretical framework, conceptual framework and research gap analysis, additionally the target population of the study was 312 employees of Kigali City and out of them a sample size of 175 employees were selected by using stratified sampling technique. The construction industry is a complex sector that places high demands on project management, planning, and implementation. Significant progress has been made in recent decades regarding the delivery of extensive construction projects, including the adoption of new building techniques, improved risk management systems, and enhanced safety measures. However, a lack of efficiency persists in the construction industry in many countries. This is due to issues within projects, such as time and cost overruns, conflicts among stakeholders, limitations in productivity improvement, quality development, and inadequate customer satisfaction. Following this, many researchers and society at large have called for a change in attitudes, behavior, and practices to increase the chances of successful construction projects to improve the result of the final products. With increased complexity, uncertainty, and time constraints in construction projects, there has been a growing need for collaboration among various project stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to describe and explain the choices made by clients in the procurement process and what contractors prefer. Based on other studies finding that collaborative procurement procedures enhance project performance, this thesis wants to analyze clients’ and contractors’ views regarding collaborative procurement procedures. Additionally, moral-hazard is a component of procurement strategies and contracts, particularly in more complex transactions that involve interaction, which significantly affects the construction industry. Megaprojects often start without precisely defined goals and without a detailed knowledge of how the project will progress or the outcomes will be delivered. We examine the requirements for governance of megaprojects by reviewing the literature and reflecting on practice. We use the analytical model of where, how and what to illustrate different units of analysis (i.e., context, governance and goals) in megaprojects in three countries and to illustrate how goals and governance move. Building upon the governance and performance management literature, the paper contributes to the understanding of moving goals and governance for ensuring performance. The structural equation modelling has contributed significant advantages in understanding projects success, although comparably, it has incremented the complexity of the analysis; thus, this research aims to propose a measurement model of projects performance considering the impact that generates strategic and servant leadership. In this research, the performance of Information Technology (IT) projects was analyzed, evaluating if they meet the schedule, budget, objective, and customer satisfaction. A study by the Standish Group reported that for the period 2015-2020 only 35% of the projects were successful [1]. An exploratory methodology based on bibliometric analysis was used and it allowed to know global trends related to governance and project performance. Also, a quantitative methodology was implemented for structuring the model of factors and variables. With the information obtained from the Colombian universities, a factorial analysis was carried out and a statistical model of linear equations was built that characterized the behavior of corporate governance, IT governance and project performance. As a result, a governance alignment model was created, which will help to improve decision-making, deliver value, and increase the efficiency of IT project management., En esta investigación se analizó el desempeño de proyectos de Tecnologías de Información (TI), evaluando si cumplen con el cronograma, presupuesto, objetivo y satisfacción del cliente. Absorption capacity (ACAP) is a fundamental factor for the firm to achieve dynamic capability and competitive advantage. Previous studies have identified two dimensions that make up this construct, called potential absorption capacity (PACAP) and realized absorption capacity (RACAP). This study investigates the influence of the two dimensions of ACAP in relation to project performance and innovation, and also analyzes the mediating role that RACAP plays in the relationship between PACAP and project performance and innovation. This study explores these relationships using the structural equation modeling (SEM) method, using the partial least squares (PLS) approach, applied to a sample of 128 companies in the automotive sector, manufacturers of parts. The results show that project performance and innovation are impacted differently by PACAP and RACAP. The structural equation modelling has contributed significant advantages in understanding projects success, although comparably, it has incremented the complexity of the analysis; thus, this research aims to propose a measurement model of projects performance considering the impact that generates strategic and servant leadership. It was conducted an extensive literature review where four observable variables were documented regarding strategic leadership, four variables for servant leadership, and four variables that measure projects performance. Initial results allowed determining a model that will permit to measure the impact of the documented leaderships in projects performance. Project management is known for its tools and techniques that are used to plan and deliver projects in a controlled context. Megaprojects don't always fit well into this paradigm due to their size, complexity and longevity. Megaprojects often start without precisely defined goals and without a detailed knowledge of how the project will progress or the outcomes will be delivered. We examine the requirements for governance of megaprojects by reviewing the literature and reflecting on practice. We use the analytical model of where, how and what to illustrate different units of analysis (i.e., context, governance and goals) in megaprojects in three countries and to illustrate how goals and governance move. Building upon the governance and performance management literature, the paper contributes to the understanding of moving goals and governance for ensuring performance. Purpose: The increasing complexity of civil engineering projects necessitates focusing on new competencies of project participants. Based on the research on team performance and design processes that are more closely linked to the relevance of the project context, it is hypothesised that empathic abilities could play an important role in the performance of civil engineering projects. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether performance can be improved by focusing on empathic abilities during the integrated design phase. Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured in-depth interviews with experts were conducted to explore the relevance of empathic abilities and their interaction with performance in a real-life infrastructure project. The project team’s empathy level was measured by means of a survey using Davis’ Interpersonal Reactivity Index method. Finally, differences between expected and measured levels of empathy were analysed. Findings: The results provide insights into how empathic abilities interact with performance. The measurement indicates that, on average, professionals in the civil engineering industry score relatively low on empathy. In addition, differences were identified between the expected distribution and the measured empathy levels of the team, implying a potential for improvement, in particular by increasing the empathic abilities of the project management and increasing gender diversity. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to investigate a relationship between empathy and the performance of civil engineering projects. The results provide initial insights into the empathic ability of civil engineering project teams and the potential of empathy to improve performance. Construction projects have become increasingly complex, requiring effective management strategies to navigate challenges related to project contexts, interdisciplinary integration, and procurement processes. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) has introduced the two-phase model to address these complexities. This model emphasizes client-contractor collaboration and differs significantly from traditional project management strategies. Emotional Intelligence (EI), particularly the competence of empathy, has been recognized as a valuable factor in improving collaboration and project performance. Additionally, Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) has gained international recognition as a project delivery model involving the contractor earlier in the project. ECI in the Dutch construction sector corresponds to the two-phase model of which the Bouwteam is a known example. This research aims to explore the role of empathy in improving project performance through client-contractor collaboration in the first phase of the two-phase model and provide a practical framework for practitioners. The research approach consisted of selecting four cases to conduct 16 semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data analysis software is used to research the research variables: empathy, two-phase model, collaboration, and project performance. The research findings reveal two key relationships: the relationship between client-contractor collaboration and project performance and the relationship between empathy and client-contractor collaboration. The construction industry is a complex sector that places high demands on project management, planning, and implementation. Significant progress has been made in recent decades regarding the delivery of extensive construction projects, including the adoption of new building techniques, improved risk management systems, and enhanced safety measures. However, a lack of efficiency persists in the construction industry in many countries. This is due to issues within projects, such as time and cost overruns, conflicts among stakeholders, limitations in productivity improvement, quality development, and inadequate customer satisfaction. Following this, many researchers and society at large have called for a change in attitudes, behavior, and practices to increase the chances of successful construction projects to improve the result of the final products. With increased complexity, uncertainty, and time constraints in construction projects, there has been a growing need for collaboration among various project stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to describe and explain the choices made by clients in the procurement process and what contractors prefer. Based on other studies finding that collaborative procurement procedures enhance project performance, this thesis wants to analyze clients’ and contractors’ views regarding collaborative procurement procedures. Additionally, moral-hazard is a component of procurement strategies and contracts, particularly in more complex transactions that involve interaction, which significantly affects the construction industry. In addition, the study attempted to see if job satisfaction had a mediation effect on the association between Leadership Competencies and project performance. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study used quantitative approach Data was collected from 151 members of the Punjab Police Lahore Safe City in Pakistan using a questionnaire and structural equation modeling technique was used to validate the study model. Findings: This research has a wide range of implications on a scholastic and managerial level. According to the findings, job satisfaction among team members is associated with leadership competency (managerial, emotional, and intellectual competency), as well as "personal growth and development, supervision-human ties, and advancement chances and compensation." The results also demonstrate that intellectual leadership competency can improve team member interactions and strengthen team leader-team member ties by improving interconnectivity. Implications/Originality/Value: This study is the first to existing empirical evidence supporting the anticipation of considerable advantages from strengthening the competency of police project leaders. Purpose: Civil engineering projects around the world have been underperforming for a long time. While the complexity of these projects will continue to increase, there is an urgent need to perform better. Although the integrated design process is critical for project success, the literature lacks studies describing the link to project performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the dominant variables that affect the integrated design process and consequently project performance. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case study was conducted to determine the dominant variables that affect the integrated design process and project performance. The research included four projects. Semi-structured interviews were the main source of data. Findings: The cases indicated that the extent to which an integrated approach is achieved in the design process is essential for project performance. This applies to the integration of stakeholders’ interests as well as the integration of disciplines. Above all, it was concluded that the project team participants’ competencies for integration are a dominant factor for project performance, as the integrated design process has changed from a technical challenge to an integrative one. Originality/value: This study provides insights into the dominant variable of the integrated design process that affects project performance, which is underexposed in the literature. The study results reveal the importance of competencies related to integration and adoption of the design problem context, which are not yet included in civil engineering design methods. Agile has revolutionized the way of working in the IT sector. Over the past two decades it has increased software development success rates and boosted the productivity of IT teams. How- ever, there is a lot of research on agile project management but very little outside the software industry. As more industries adopt agile project management, there is a need for research on agile project management outside the software industry. Fourteen expert interviews with expe- rienced project managers from different industries were analyzed. This research provides new insights into the success factors of agile project management. Large-scale infrastructure projects are risky ventures, often subjected to poor performance. Time and cost are often escalating beyond estimation while quality and benefits remain unchanged. However, little is known about the project performance in the district heating sector, which serves as basic infrastructure and plays an important role in regional energy transitions. This thesis aims to explore the project performance of large-scale infrastructure projects within the energy sector, particularly the district heating setting to enhance the knowledge of large-scale project performance, and further explore what factors contribute to explaining the performance of large-scale projects within this setting. To fulfil the purpose of this thesis, a multiple case study was conducted in a Swedish district heating setting. A review of relevant literature served as a complement to the primary data retrieved from the cases, laying a theoretical foundation for analysis. The empirical study consists of three parts. The first phase consisted of 18 interviews conducted with people at various positions within the case company to get a holistic picture of the problem and to select the nine cases focused on within this study. The second phase consisted of gathering qualitative and quantitative data on project performance, while the last phase consisted of nine in-depth interviews with the project managers of the nine selected projects. This thesis found a varying project performance, with a mean cost escalation of 12.9 percent and a time increase of 140 days on average. Similar to other studies, large-scale energy infrastructure projects have a tendency to fail rather than succeed when compared to the Iron Triangle criterias, cost, time and quality. Insufficient planning and procurement, weak leadership and ill-performing contractors are significant factors that have a large negative impact on performance. Purpose: This research aimed to determine leadership competencies (emotional, managerial, and intellectual) on Punjab police project performance (Pakistan). In addition, the study attempted to see if job satisfaction had a mediation effect on the association between Leadership Competencies and project performance. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study used quantitative approach Data was collected from 151 members of the Punjab Police Lahore Safe City in Pakistan using a questionnaire and structural equation modeling technique was used to validate the study model. Findings: This research has a wide range of implications on a scholastic and managerial level. According to the findings, job satisfaction among team members is associated with leadership competency (managerial, emotional, and intellectual competency), as well as "personal growth and development, supervision-human ties, and advancement chances and compensation." The results also demonstrate that intellectual leadership competency can improve team member interactions and strengthen team leader-team member ties by improving interconnectivity. Implications/Originality/Value: This study is the first to existing empirical evidence supporting the anticipation of considerable advantages from strengthening the competency of police project leaders. This paper adds significant value to the relevant body of knowledge by establishing a correlation between leadership skill, job satisfaction, and project performance.

Most of the project engineers are presumed to be promoted as the project manager after certain period of services. However, they are required to attain certain qualities in order to manage the project effectively. Hence, this paper summarised several recent skills required for an engineering project managers. This paper relates the role of the engineering project manager with the skills required to accomplish the managerial jobs. The skills are divided into six categories, which are conceptual skills, human skills, political skills, technical skills, negotiating skills and budgeting skills. Each of these skills were discussed with several examples as the reference. It was believed that these skills are needed for the project managers to boost up the management performance, in the real engineering project field, and the findings of this paper could become the appropriate guidelines for the young engineers as the motivation to climb up the promotional ladder as some successful project managers.

Purpose: Civil engineering projects around the world have been underperforming for a long time. While the complexity of these projects will continue to increase, there is an urgent need to perform better. Although the integrated design process is critical for project success, the literature lacks studies describing the link to project performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the dominant variables that affect the integrated design process and consequently project performance. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case study was conducted to determine the dominant variables that affect the integrated design process and project performance. The research included four projects. Semi-structured interviews were the main source of data. Findings: The cases indicated that the extent to which an integrated approach is achieved in the design process is essential for project performance. This applies to the integration of stakeholders’ interests as well as the integration of disciplines. Above all, it was concluded that the project team participants’ competencies for integration are a dominant factor for project performance, as the integrated design process has changed from a technical challenge to an integrative one. Originality/value: This study provides insights into the dominant variable of the integrated design process that affects project performance, which is underexposed in the literature. The study results reveal the importance of competencies related to integration and adoption of the design problem context, which are not yet included in civil engineering design methods. Recently, many models of maturity have emerged in IT sector, and there are few research studies on their benefits and impact on projects performance. The main aim is to study the impact of implementing project management maturity models on IT project performance. The quantitative approach was used by measuring the implementation of four basic principles shared by all maturity model. In addition, secondary research methods were used to collect data on the implementation of maturity models from academic journals, articles, and online books. A survey was conducted as a primary research method to collect data from employees of various job roles working in IT organisations. This survey is designed in three sections, the first for demographics, the second for measuring maturity models implementation, and the third for measuring project performance. Survey questionnaire was published by sending it electronically to 300 IT professionals representing the study population. 192 responses were received and therefore the participation response rate was 64%. Appropriate scientific analysis methods were used to analyze the data, including descriptive analysis, reliability, correlation, linear regression, and multiple regression. This research found that the implementation of maturity models have a significant relationship with the performance of IT projects, and plays an important role in influencing. The research offers a set of recommendations, including: To improve the performance of IT projects, it is recommended to implement the project management maturity models, with an emphasis on process improvement activities. It is recommended that IT organizations start spreading awareness of maturity models and adopt their own improvement policies.

The aim of this research is to find a generalized model of prediction and control of the project performance using the knowledge creation and considering the impact of project complexity on project performance. This research attempts to find knowledge creation constructs that measure the styles of knowledge creation within an Arab context. The research investigates four styles of knowledge creation in the field of project management, namely innovative style, experiential style, risk averse style, and specialized style. This is a mixed-method study of the knowledge creation styles of project managers and is applied to 402 projects from different Arab countries. The study systematically reviews the literature in the area of complexity, knowledge creation and project performance, and generates a conceptual model for a qualitative study followed by a quantitative hypothesized model for a quantitative study. This study quantifies the effect of each knowledge creation style at the level of the success of the project performance. This impact is measured in the light of these styles of knowledge creation as moderators of the impact of level of project complexity on the level of project success. The research conclusion is the significance of the mediation of risk averse knowledge creation and the significant moderation impact on the relationship between project complexity and the project performance. Also the research is providing new constructs for measuring the knowledge creation styles and in triangulating the results through quantitative study. Moreover, the research adopts an inductive approach to explain and predict the levels of success of project performance and concludes that there two levels of analysis; one is the level of the relationship between the main constructs of the study, and in this regard the RAKCS is the mediator and the IKCS is the moderator between the project complexity and the project performance. Effective materials management has a significant role in the success of any construction projects. Understanding the factors related to the management effectiveness may assist the decision-makers of construction firms to allocate resources in the best possible manner in managing materials when implementing construction projects. However, limited studies have explored and investigated the associated factors of effective materials management related to project performance, especially in the Malaysian construction industry context. Thus, this research paper aims to investigate the influential factors of effective materials management and their effects on project performance. A partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) approach was employed to analyse 202 pieces of data collected from a questionnaire survey. The results indicate that the effective materials management has a positive significant impact on project performance. The top three groups of factors that contribute to this management effectiveness are transportation, management, and purchasing; meanwhile, the most implied factors of the effective materials management are waste, cost and time of project performance. To increase project performance, more resources should be allocated to improve the transportation, management and purchasing components of materials management.

The aim of this research was to investigate if and how the project performance of integrated construction projects can be improved by focussing on empathy during the preconstruction phase. Big infrastructural construction projects often face a poor project performance which causes the sector is aimed at searching for strategies to deal with this. Looking at what drives project success it is said the people involved and their competences are main factors of influence. These people need to integrate working processes and collaborate with each other to successfully deliver the project. Experiences from practice and a literature review resulted in a strong expectation that especially the competence empathy is important to this in construction projects. This would be important during the preconstruction phase in specific to support the alignment and integration between project team members. The research focusses hereby on the preconstruction phase of integrated construction projects and follows the Integral Project Management (IPM) structure to describe the structure of construction project teams. Empathy is defined as ‘the ability to understand and share the feelings of another’. The research adopts a difference in internal empathy ( = empathy between people within the project organization) and external empathy (= empathy with the client and/or stakeholders). The research first investigated in interviews with experts from the industry if and where during the preconstruction phase it would be important for the involved people to be empathic. Second the empathic ability of a construction project organization has been measured to indicate how empathy is distributed across project participants. The results showed that the construction professionals on average score low on empathic competence and that in certain situations it would be important for project participants to be empathic for a good project outcome. Infrastructure construction projects worldwide are notorious for their substantial time and cost overruns and this research represents a step forward to improving the situation by amalgamating the SCOR and EVM models prevalent in the industry into a holistic model linking the performance drivers of Stakeholder Performance, Reliability, Responsiveness and the contractor’s Standard Ratings criteria, with the time and cost of projects. The model was tested and validated for its usefulness in conjunction with a variety of stakeholders.
