In this paper we propose a new family of estimators, Minimum Density Power Divergence Estimators (MDPDE), as a robust generalization of maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) for the loglinear model with multinomial sampling by using the Density Power Divergence (DPD) measure introduced by Basu et al. (1998). Based on these estimators, we further develop two types of confidence intervals (asymptotic and bootstrap ones), as well as a new robust family of Wald-type test statistics for testing a nested sequence of loglinear models. Furthermore, we study theoretically the robust properties of both the MDPDE as well as Wald-type tests through the classical influence function analysis. This work concerns parameter estimation for a bivariate normal model where the difference of the two normal means is bounded. A hierarchical prior is considered which allows uncertainty to be introduced in the parametric constraint. We begin by studying the case of a uniform prior on $\theta_1-\theta_2 \geq m$ where $m \sim N(0,\sigma_m^2)$. We show that the Bayes estimator of $\theta_1$ dominates $X_1$ under squared error loss, which extends the known result for $\sigma_m^2=0$; that is, without uncertainty in the constraint. An ad hoc credible set for $\theta_1$ is then presented along with an analysis of its frequentist properties including coverage probability. Finally, the last chapter considers two modifications to the previous model: a parametric restriction of the form $|\theta_1-\theta_2| \leq m$ and the case of unknown variances. A positive exponential family of distributions is taken into consideration. Two measures of reliability are discussed. Uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators (UMVUES) and maximum likelihood estimators (MLES) are developed for the reliability functions. In addition to the UMVUES and MLES, we derive the method of moment estimators (MOME). The performances of two types of estimators are compared through Monte Carlo simulation.

Athree parameter Burr distribution is considered. Two measures of reliability are discussed. Point and interval estimation procedures are developed for the parameters, and reliability functions under type II and type I censoring. Two types of point estimators namely- uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators (UMVUES) and maximum likelihood estimators (MLES) are derived. Asymptotic variance-covariance matrix and confidence intervals for MLE’s are obtained. Testing procedures are also developed for various hypotheses.

The capacity of short-term memory is a key constraint when people make online judgments requiringthem to rely on samples retrieved from memory (e.g., Dougherty & Hunter, 2003). In this article, theauthors compare 2 accounts of how people use knowledge of statistical distributions to make pointestimates: either by retrieving precomputed large-sample representations or by retrieving small samplesof similar observations post hoc at the time of judgment, as constrained by short-term memory capacity(the naı¨ve sampling model: Juslin, Winman, & Hansson, 2007). Results from four experiments supportthe predictions by the naı¨ve sampling model, including that participants sometimes guess values thatthey, when probed, demonstrably know have the lowest probability of occurring. Experiment 1 alsodemonstrated the operations of an unpredicted recognition-based inference. Computational modeling alsoincorporating this process demonstrated that the data from all 4 experiments were better predicted byassuming a post hoc sampling process constrained by short-term memory capacity than by assumingabstraction of large-sample representations of the distribution.

El objetivo de este trabajo es la estimación del parámetro exponencial de Richter que determina la distribución de probabilidad de la variable intensidad de movimientos sísmicos que se producen en una determinada zona. Las medidas de intensidad sísmica son, por propia naturaleza, imprecisas y por ello se propone estimar el parámetro mediante un procedimiento que incorpore la imprecisión de los datos. Se cuantifica la imprecisión asignando a cada medida de intensidad una distribución de probabilidad sobre el rango de intensidades. Cada medida imprecisa de intensidad se puede entonces interpretar como una realización de una variable aleatoria valorada en el espacio de Hilbert l2(R) cuya esperanza se identifica con la distribución de la variable intensidad. La estimación del parámetro se obtiene entonces a través de la minimización de la distancia cuadrática en l2(R) entre la distribución teórica de la variable intensidad y la media muestral de las medidas imprecisas de intensidad. Se puede demostrar que el estimador así obtenido proporciona bajo ciertas hipótesis, razonables en la práctica, un estimador del parámetro asintóticamente centrado y normal. Se aplica el método a la obtención de los estimadores del parámetro de Richter para dos catálogos sísmicos concretos, uno real correspondiente a una zona del Pirineo Oriental y otro simulado. In this paper we investigate the dimensional structure of probability distributions on Euclidean space and characterize a class of regular distributions. We obtain a consistent estimator of dimension based on a nearest neighbor statistic and in addition obtain asymptotic confidence intervals for dimension in the case of regular distributions.
