The influence of an alternating (ac) sinusoidal perturbation, of known angular frequency and small amplitude, superimposed to the usual applied continuous (dc) signal on the electroosmotic Row has been studied. The experimental results show that the presence of the ac perturbation affects the electroosmotic flow value, depending on the frequency of the ac signal and on the solution stirring conditions. In the frequency range studied, two regions have been observed where the electroosmotic Row reaches a maximum value: one at low frequencies (similar to Hz); and another at frequencies of the order of kHz. We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic structure of this surface, including an analysis of the Fermi surface, combined with structural information from low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. In the complex Fermi surface map found, we identify different contributions from the bulk bands, from interface states located below the hexagonal topmost layer, and from the hexagonal topmost layer itself. The electronic states related to this layer exhibit quasi-one-dimensional character, in agreement with the chain aspect of the reconstructed layer, as demonstrated by their dispersion, periodicity, and reciprocal space location., Unión Europea. A part from the usual type of phase diagram, typical of atomic simple fuids with long-ranged attractions, we find two types of phase diagrams, specific to colloidal systems with intermediate and short-ranged attractions. The RC4 pedagogical accompaniment model is a process that allows innovative didactic and methodological strategies to strengthen the performance of teachers. The objective of this article was to propose the RC4 accompaniment model for the strengthening of teaching performance. As a methodology, a bibliographic review was carried out to identify the strategies of pedagogical accompaniment, and also through a survey of the teachers to identify through the diagnosis the perspective of the same. The results were obtained the RC4 pedagogical accompaniment model developed in four phases: awareness- diagnosis, elaboration of the accompaniment plan, verification, teaching performance. The model was based on the contribution of some authors who refer to the importance of pedagogical accompaniment to strengthen teaching performance. In conclusion, the RC4 pedagogical accompaniment model was designed to strengthen teaching performance according to the needs detected., El modelo de acompañamiento pedagógico RC4 es un proceso que permite contar con estrategias didácticas y metodológicas innovadoras para fortalecer el desempeño de los docentes. El objetivo del presente artículo fue proponer el modelo de acompañamiento RC4 para el fortalecimiento del desempeño docente. Como metodología se realizó una revisión bibliográfica para identificar las estrategias de acompañamiento pedagógico, y así mismo por medio de una encuesta a los docentes para identificar por medio del diagnóstico la perspectiva de los mismos. Como resultado se obtuvo el modelo de acompañamiento pedagógico RC4 desarrollado en cuatro fases: concienciación-diagnóstico, elaboración del plan de acompañamiento, verificación, desempeño docente. Se fundamentó el modelo con el aporte de algunos autores que hacen referencia a la importancia del acompañamiento pedagógico para fortalecer el desempeño docente. En conclusión, se diseñó el modelo de acompañamiento pedagógico RC4 para fortalecer el desempeño docente acorde a las necesidades detectadas.

In the data-driven world, textile is a valuable resource for improving the quality of life through continuous monitoring of daily activities and physiological signals of humans. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) are an attractive option for self-powered sensor development by coupling energy harvesting and sensing ability. In this study, to the best of the knowledge, scalable fabrication of Ti3C2Tx MXene-embedded polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposite fiber using a thermal drawing process is presented for the first time. The output open circuit voltage and short circuit current show 53% and 58% improvement, respectively, compared to pristine PVDF fiber. The synergistic interaction between the surface termination groups of MXene and polar PVDF polymer enhances the performance of the fiber. The flexibility of the fiber enables the weaving of fabric TENG devices for large-area applications. The fabric TENG (3 x 2 cm(2)) demonstrates a power density of 40.8 mW m(-2) at the matching load of 8 M omega by maintaining a stable performance over 12 000 cycles. Moreover, the fabric TENG has shown the capability of energy harvesting by operating a digital clock and a calculator. In this paper, we first define the phases of a sectorial operator based on the numerical range. We are interested in the estimation of the spectrum phases of AB based on the phases of two sectorial operators A and B. Motivated by the classical small gain theorem, we formulate an operator small phase theorem with necessity for the invertibility of I + AB, which plays a crucial role in feedback stability analysis. Afterwards, we consider the special class of sectorial operators of the form P+K, where P is strictly positive and K is compact. More properties of the phases for those operators are studied, including those of compressions, Schur complements, operator means and products. Finally, for the special class of sectorial operators, we further establish a majorization relation between the phases of the spectrum of AB and the phases of two operators A and B.

Reverse-phase liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) is the preferred separation mode for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) due to its adaptability and higher selectivity for hydrophobic compounds. This review article discusses the fundamentals of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). This covers the separation principle, various stationary and mobile phase types, and separation-affecting variables. This article highlights the need of developing and testing such methods in addition to outlining the advantages of using RP-HPLC in industries like pharmaceutical, food, and environmental analysis. As examples of more recent advancements in RP-HPLC, new stationary and mobile phases, RP-HPLC downsizing, and hyphenated methods are also discussed. This review article provides a comprehensive tool for designing, refining, and validating RP-HPLC processes.

Scanning electron microscopy coupled with microanalysis (SEM-EDX) is an important analytical tool for the morphological and chemical characterization of different types of materials. In many applications, SEM-EDX elemental maps are usually used and processed as images, thus flattening and reducing the spectroscopic information contained in EDX hyperspectral data cubes. The exploitation of the full hyperspectral dataset could be indeed very useful for the study of complex matrices like soil. In order to maximize the information attainable by SEM-EDX data cubes analysis, the software package “Datamuncher Gamma” was implemented and applied to study soil aggregates. By using this approach, different phases (silicates, aluminosilicates, Ca-carbonates, Ca-phosphates, organic matter, iron oxides) inside soil aggregates were successfully identified and segmented. The advantages of this method over the common ROI imaging approach are presented. Finally, this method was used to compare different aggregates in a Cr-polluted soil and understand their possible pedological history. Curved crystals are a simple but powerful approach to bridge the gap between single crystal surfaces and nanoparticle catalysts, by allowing a rational assessment of the role of active step sites in gas-surface reactions. Using a curved Rh(111) crystal, here, we investigate the effect of A-type (square geometry) and B-type (triangular geometry) atomic packing of steps on the catalytic CO oxidation on Rh at millibar pressures. Imaging the crystal during reaction ignition with laser-induced CO2 fluorescence demonstrates a two-step process, where B-steps ignite at lower temperature than A-steps. Such fundamental dissimilarity is explained in ambient pressure X-ray photoemission (AP-XPS) experiments, which reveal partial CO desorption and oxygen buildup only at B-steps. AP-XPS also proves that A-B step asymmetries extend to the active stage: at A-steps, low-active O-Rh-O trilayers buildup immediately after ignition, while highly active chemisorbed O is the dominant species on B-type steps. We conclude that B-steps are more efficient than A-steps for the CO oxidation.

In the Netherlands, beside cement replacement with more green cement types, there is also an urgent need for alternative materials for natural sand in new concrete in order to make it circular. Furthermore, the recyclers have raised questions regarding upscaling and the potential of fine recycled concrete aggregates (fRCA) in structural concrete elements since the availability of recycled construction rubble is increasing. The variations in their chemical and physical properties and lack of standards for their quality evaluation is the main reason for not yet using fRCA in new concrete. In this paper, an in-depth characterization of different fRCA is performed in order to define their chemical properties. The properties can be eventually related to concrete mix design and performance (next step), so that fRCA can be classified as a material that can be used in more advanced applications. This is achieved with a multi-level chemical characterization of individual and total fractions (0-0.25 mm, 0.25-4 mm and 0-4 mm) for finding type and content of the original sand and cement phases and potential contamination of selected fractions. The tests include quantification of element composition with X-ray fluorescence (XRF), qualitative and quantitative phase analysis with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld method. In addition, cement paste content, chlorides and sulfates of each type of fRCA was measured in order to evaluate contamination of studied material. It was shown that fRCA from different origins have similar chemical and mineralogical composition and contain comparative chloride content. The chemical composition testing can provide a first line control regarding composition and potential contamination of fRCA. After that, it can be decided which additional tests are necessary to be done in order to evaluate the suitability of fRCA for replacement of primary natural fine aggregates in new concrete., Materials and Environment

Purpose: This study aims to expose the various roles that teachers and students adopt in the architecture design studio. It highlights how these roles change over time, through three distinct phases, which relate to the stages of the design project. This understanding of how roles change over the semester will guide academics in understanding how to better relate to students. Design/methodology/approach: Through a series of interviews and surveys, this study utilised a modified Delphi method to establish a consensus of opinion, both within and across the three stakeholder groups of students, tutors and coordinators/lecturers. Two rounds of data collection were conducted, with “expert” perceptions of the three stakeholder roles being established. Findings: The roles that are adopted and perceived by students, tutors and coordinators/lecturers vary over time and respond to the stages of the design project. While there is general agreement between the perceptions of students and their teachers, there are some notable differences at key times. Originality/value: This research builds upon previous studies into the roles of students and their teachers in the architecture design studio. It provides a nuanced map of how roles change and how interactions happen, over the duration and through the phases, of the architecture design project.

This sensing scheme translates the electrical sensitivity of a transmission line conductor to the insertion phase as a measurement variable. A coplanar waveguide (CPW) based structure was designed, screen-printed, and tested on relative humidity (RH) conditions ranging from 22.8-75.3 %RH. For the first time, a composite material made of poly-pyrrole and TEMPO Oxidized Cellulose Nanofibers (TOCN/PPy) was integrated to the structure and studied as a humidity sensitive conductor in microwave frequencies. The measured sensitivity was 0.154°/%RH at 5.870 GHz, while insertion losses decreased by 1.26 dB. The effects of sensing layers thickness as well as trade-off considerations between phase sensitivity and signal attenuation were analyzed by simulation. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

[ES] Ante la necesidad de gestión del almacén de muebles de Ribarroja perteneciente a la Generalitat Valenciana se plantea y desarrolla una solución para la gestión del mobiliario y las transacciones que se realicen en el mismo. Anteriormente, la gestión de dicho almacén se realizaba únicamente mediante la herramienta Excel. Sin embargo, debido al aumento de peticiones y datos que se registraban en el mismo la gestión cada vez se volvía más tediosa y complicada, pues el almacenaje de datos en el Excel era algo precario y dificultaba enormemente el acceso a los datos más antiguos. Es por ello, por lo que la Generalitat estimó que una mejora en este sistema de gestión sería de gran utilidad para los encargados del almacén. El objetivo de este trabajo es explicar el periodo de creación de dicha solución, explicando las distintas fases por las que ha pasado el proyecto y explicar el desarrollo final de la solución. También se comentará parte de mi experiencia en el mismo como alumno en prácticas en la empresa Everis y las motivaciones personales que me han llevado a participar en este proyecto., [EN] Given the need to manage the Ribarroja furniture warehouse belonging to the Generalitat Valenciana, a solution is proposed and developed for the management of the furniture and the transactions carried out therein. Previously, the management of said warehouse was only carried out using the Excel tool, however, due to the increase in requests and data that were recorded in it, the management became increasingly tedious and complicated, since the storage of data in Excel was somewhat precarious and greatly hindered access to the oldest data. That is why the Generalitat estimated that an improvement in this management system would be very useful for warehouse managers. The objective of this work is to explain the period of creation of said solution, explaining the different phases that the project has gone through and explaining the final development of the solution, it will also describe part of my experience in it as a trainee in the Everis company and the personal motivations that have led me to participate in this project.

The paper considers automatic balancing devices for knife refiner rotors which rotate in a two-phase or three-phase medium. The total imbalance of the mill rotor consists of mechanical, hydraulic and hydrodynamic components. The main component is mechanical imbalance, which changes during operation due to uneven wear of the headset. It is recommended to use automatic rotor balancing devices in the designs of these machines. These devices allow compensating for the mechanical component of the rotor imbalance without stopping the mill. A mathematical model and designs of automatic balancing devices for mill rotors have been developed. The proposed calculation method and design of automatic rotor balancing devices can be used in other machines, for example, in centrifugal pumps. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The paper considers automatic balancing devices for knife refiner rotors which rotate in a two-phase or three-phase medium. The total imbalance of the mill rotor consists of mechanical, hydraulic and hydrodynamic components. The main component is mechanical imbalance, which changes during operation due to uneven wear of the headset. It is recommended to use automatic rotor balancing devices in the designs of these machines. These devices allow compensating for the mechanical component of the rotor imbalance without stopping the mill. A mathematical model and designs of automatic balancing devices for mill rotors have been developed. The proposed calculation method and design of automatic rotor balancing devices can be used in other machines, for example, in centrifugal pumps. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This article presents a perspective on syntactic cyclicity in minimalism that is compatible with fundamental ideas in construction-grammar approaches. In particular, I outline the minimalist approach to syntactic structure building and highlight that units of potentially any phrasal size can be atomic items in the syntactic derivation, showing that the opposition between simplex linguistic items ("words") and more complex ones ("phrases") in minimalism is in principle as artificial as in many construction-grammar approaches. Based on this perspective on structure building, I focus on the empirical domain of subextraction patterns out of complex subjects, adjuncts, and complements, and I demonstrate that the acceptability patterns in this domain can be explained by a functional approach to syntactic cyclicity: Unacceptable patterns are ruled out not for configurational (and hence syntactic) reasons, but rather they systematically follow from infelicitous interpretations at the syntax-discourse interface. This raises the question of whether syntactic cyclicity is (at least in part) motivated by performance (read: "language-in-use") constraints, which I consider another area for fruitful interaction between construction-grammar and usage-based accounts on the one hand and minimalism on the other hand.

2D materials based on main group element compounds have recently attracted significant attention because of their rich stoichiometric ratios and structure motifs. This review focuses on the phases in various 2D binary materials including III–VI, IV–VI, V–VI, III–V, IV–V, and V–V materials. Reducing 3D materials to 2D introduces confinement and surface effects as well as stabilizes unstable 3D phases in their 2D form. Their crystal structures, stability, preparation, and applications are summarized based on theoretical predictions and experimental explorations. Moreover, various properties of 2D materials, such as ferroelectric effect, anisotropic optical and electrical properties, ultralow thermal conductivity, and topological state are discussed. Finally, a few perspectives and an outlook are given to inspire readers toward exploring 2D materials with new phases and properties.

One of the more important social contexts in student life may be the student group. This study is based on a qualitative method to provide a deeper insight into how a student group describes the different phases it goes through and the functions of a student group. To answer the purpose, two research questions were asked: (1) How does a student group describe the different phases it goes through? (2) What manifest and latent functions can be distinguished in a student group? The empirical material for the study was gathered through five semi-structured interviews, in which the respondents were members of the same student group. I have analyzed the empirics by applying two theories, Merton's theory of latent and manifest functions and a theory of group processes by Lennéer Axelson and Thylefors. These two theories were chosen to answer the purpose and the research questions. Previous studies were also used to understand a student group's social significance and its manifest and latent functions. It appeared during the analysis of the material that the student group creates safety, belonging and social cohesion for the individual, the student group also created a study-based support. The student group that was studied also considered themselves as a group of friends. The specific purpose that existed at the beginning of the group constellation was changed when the group members created deeper relationships. The manifest function was that the respondents would start studying together, the manifest function developed latent functions. This study ends with a discussion on how a student group can be understood as an informal group and as an institutional group. This study also discuss what the university as an institution can do to support student groups. Artificial lattices have served as a platform to study the physics of unconventional superconductivity. We study semiconductor artificial graphene-a honeycomb superlattice imposed on a semiconductor heterostructure-which hosts the Dirac physics of graphene but with a tunable periodic potential strength and lattice spacing, allowing control of the strength of the electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate a new mechanism for superconductivity due to repulsive interactions which requires a strong lattice potential and a minimum doping away from the Dirac points. The mechanism relies on the Berry phase of the emergent Dirac fermions, which causes oppositely moving electron pairs near the Dirac points to interfere destructively, reducing the Coulomb repulsion and thereby giving rise to an effective attraction. The attractive component of the interaction is enhanced by a novel antiscreening effect which, in turn, increases with doping; as a result, there is a minimum doping beyond which superconducting order generically ensues. The dominant superconducting state exhibits a spatially modulated gap with chiral p-wave symmetry. Microscopic calculations suggest that the possible critical temperatures are large relative to the low carrier densities, for a range of experimentally realistic parameters.

The transport industry is one of the highest consumers of aluminium alloys. However, the quest for new and cheaper aluminium with properties comparable to the contenders has remain in the research domain for sometimes. Even at that, the literature is dearth of clear ideas on conversion of the huge RBCs to X7475 experimental alloys. In furtherance to the fabrication of a new 7xxx (Al-4-5Zn-1.5Mg-1.0Mn-0.35Cu) alloy from Recycled Beverage Cans (RBCs), the effect of annealing temperature (350 oC, 380 oC and 413 oC) and artificial ageing time (6, 10.5 and 15 hours) on the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (e) were reported. Nine samples (S1-S9) of experimental alloys were fabricated and subjected to tensile tests, SEM/EDX and XRD analysis. Secondary phases like MgZn2, Cu2Mg precipitates as observed in the XRD supported an improved UTS. The elemental analysis revealed the presence of alloying compositions. An alloy fabricated using Al-5Zn-1.5Mg-1.0Mn-0.35Cu (S9), artificially aged at 6 h and annealed at 413 oC had the highest UTS of 362.2 MPa and an elongation of 3.09 mm (15.45 %). The result demonstrated that a new X7475 alloy was fabricated from RBCs with comparable mechanical properties with alloys fabricated using pure aluminium.  &nbsp

Liquid crystalline phases (LCs) readily exhibit optical responsivity to small fluctuations in their immediate environment. By encapsulating LC phase forming compounds within polymer fibers through the electrospinning process (a fiber spinning method known for being a fast way of forming chemically diverse non-woven mats), it is possible to create functionalized LC-polymer fiber mats that are responsive as well. As these fiber mats can be handled macroscopically, a usercan observe the responses of the mats macroscopically without the need for bulky electronics. This thesis presents several non-woven fiber mats that were coaxially electrospun to contain LC within their individual polymer fibers cores for use as novel volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors. The mats are flexible, lightweight, and shown to both macroscopically and microscopically respond to toluene gas. Such gas responsive mats may be incorporated into garments for visually alerting the wearer when they are exposed to harmful levels of VOCs for example. Additionally, the interaction and re-prioritization of several electrospinning variables (from the chemistry based to the processing based) for forming the LC-mats are also discussed. The balance of these variables determines whether a wide range of phenomena occur during fiber formation. For instance, unexpected phase separation between the polymer sheath solution and the LC core can mean the difference between forming fully dried fibrous mats and wet/meshed films. A chapter is devoted to discussing the impact that solvent miscibility with an LC can have on fiber production, including also the effect that water can have when condensed into the electrospinning coaxial jet. The fiber shapes that the polymer fiber sheaths adopt (beaded versus non-beaded), as well as the continuity of the LC core, will influence the visual app earance of the mats. It is established that the formation of intermediate phases occurs at the Al / W phase boundary. In this case, the Rebinder effect plays a significant role in dissolving W. The dissolution process is simulated with the formation of new phases according to the Al-W phase equilibrium diagram. The introduction of certain regularities into the technology of Al-Ti-W alloys will reduce the lack of chemical heterogeneity of the alloys and increase their properties.

Electronic devices utilize the foremost advances in technology. In order to make progress we must understand not only the properties of novel materials but also how best to synthesize these materials in an appropriate way so that they can be used in an industrial setting. Transition metal dichalcogenides, specifically molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) is a class of 2D material that has been well studied for their semiconducting nature in the 2H phase yet they also have 2 other phases with vastly different properties: 1T’ and 1T. The 1T’ phase has metallic properties. There is a 3rd phase, however, that prior to my work has been largely left unstudied, the 1T phase. This phase is calculated to be semi metallic from its calculated band structure but is also highly unfavorable at room temperature. With this in mind we set out to synthesis this elusive phase via a chemical vapor deposition process by selectively using process gases and varying cooling rates to stabilize the 1T phase at ambient temperatures. Measurements confirm the 1T phase of MoTe2 is in fact semi-metallic. In addition, mixed phase 2H/1T films were synthesized and electronically tested to yield a semiconducting film with significantly improved conductivity that could still be gated for on/off current switching. As copper interconnects decrease in cross-section to below 100 nm in size the resistivity of this, typically, highly conductive metal starts to increase exponentially do to surface and grain boundary scattering of electrons. Quasi-1D Transition metal trichalcogenides, like tantalum triselenide (TaSe3), can have metallic properties. The main issue that is being addressed is that of copper interconnects as they reach their scaling limits. The concentration is 2-fold, 1) develop a growth method/process that could synthesis TaSe3 at temperatures at or lower than 400°C and 2) measure the materials resistivity as a function of decreasing cross-sectional area to see if these highly crystalline transition

In hospitals, the duration of surgical procedures is susceptible to a number a factors resulting in varying procedure durations of the same procedure. When these procedure times deviate from the predicted surgical duration, scheduling conflicts arise, leading to patient discomfort and inefficient use of hospital resources. Considering the aging population and the subsequent growing demand for healthcare, hospitals are under constant pressure to provide cost-effective care. Indeed, this is also the case for the interventional cardiology unit, where the expected increase of the prevalence of cardiovascular disease is expected to put a strain on hospital human resources. Improving the efficiency has been an area of focus in many hospitals. In fact, advanced methods such as surgical workflow monitoring have been employed to identify points of improvement especially in procedure scheduling. Up until now, this has not been employed in cardiac catheterization laboratories in the Netherland. The purpose of this study, therefore is identify primarily the factors influencing variability of the procedure time of procedures of the cardiac catheterization laboratory of the Reinier de Graaf Hospital in Delft and secondarily the possible sources compatible with video-based workflow monitoring for phase segmentation of the procedures. Retrospective data obtained from DoseWise was used to analyze the procedure times and associating factors of coronary angiograms and pacemaker implantation procedures. In addition, process models of the procedures were created and activity recognition identifiers were studied through observer-based data acquisition. Analysis showed that in coronary angiograms variations of total procedure times are mostly due to variable preparation times, whereas for pacemaker implantation the lead positioning times were the main source for variability. In addition, more experienced operators were shown to complete the procedure in a shorter time (-4.35%

In order to make progress we must understand not only the properties of novel materials but also how best to synthesize these materials in an appropriate way so that they can be used in an industrial setting. Transition metal dichalcogenides, specifically molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) is a class of 2D material that has been well studied for their semiconducting nature in the 2H phase yet they also have 2 other phases with vastly different properties: 1T’ and 1T. The 1T’ phase has metallic properties. There is a 3rd phase, however, that prior to my work has been largely left unstudied, the 1T phase. This phase is calculated to be semi metallic from its calculated band structure but is also highly unfavorable at room temperature. With this in mind we set out to synthesis this elusive phase via a chemical vapor deposition process by selectively using process gases and varying cooling rates to stabilize the 1T phase at ambient temperatures. Measurements confirm the 1T phase of MoTe2 is in fact semi-metallic. In addition, mixed phase 2H/1T films were synthesized and electronically tested to yield a semiconducting film with significantly improved conductivity that could still be gated for on/off current switching. As copper interconnects decrease in cross-section to below 100 nm in size the resistivity of this, typically, highly conductive metal starts to increase exponentially do to surface and grain boundary scattering of electrons. Quasi-1D Transition metal trichalcogenides, like tantalum triselenide (TaSe3), can have metallic properties. The main issue that is being addressed is that of copper interconnects as they reach their scaling limits. The concentration is 2-fold, 1) develop a growth method/process that could synthesis TaSe3 at temperatures at or lower than 400°C and 2) measure the materials resistivity as a function of decreasing cross-sectional area to see if these highly crystalline transition

As these fiber mats can be handled macroscopically, a usercan observe the responses of the mats macroscopically without the need for bulky electronics. This thesis presents several non-woven fiber mats that were coaxially electrospun to contain LC within their individual polymer fibers cores for use as novel volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors. The mats are flexible, lightweight, and shown to both macroscopically and microscopically respond to toluene gas. Such gas responsive mats may be incorporated into garments for visually alerting the wearer when they are exposed to harmful levels of VOCs for example. Additionally, the interaction and re-prioritization of several electrospinning variables (from the chemistry based to the processing based) for forming the LC-mats are also discussed. The balance of these variables determines whether a wide range of phenomena occur during fiber formation. For instance, unexpected phase separation between the polymer sheath solution and the LC core can mean the difference between forming fully dried fibrous mats and wet/meshed films. The circadian clock is an endogenous oscillator that controls daily rhythms in metabolism, physiology, and behavior. Although the timekeeping components differ among species, a common design principle is a transcription-translation negative feedback loop. However, it is becoming clear that other mechanisms can contribute to the generation of 24 h rhythms. Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) exhibit 24 h rhythms in their redox state in all kingdoms of life. In mammalian adrenal gland, heart and brown adipose tissue, such rhythms are generated as a result of an inactivating hyperoxidation reaction that is reduced by coordinated import of sulfiredoxin (Srx) into the mitochondria. However, a quantitative description of the Prx/Srx oscillating system is still missing. We investigate the basic principles that generate mitochondrial Prx/Srx rhythms using computational modeling. We observe that the previously described delay in mitochondrial Srx import, in combination with an appropriate separation of fast and slow reactions, is sufficient to generate robust self-sustained relaxation-like oscillations.
