- Abstract
In patients with esophageal cancer (EC) undergoing definitive chemo-radiotherapy (dCRT), the usage of both three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) result in a high incidental irradiation to the regional lymphatic drainage pathways of the esophagus, although this is partially lower under VMAT. These results indicate that in dCRT of EC involved field irradiation is preferable to elective nodal irradiation, even when using modern radiation techniques.

- Abstract
With the purpose of contributing to the field of social science research regarding racism in South Africa, this thesis aims to investigate how peoples’ experiences of everyday racism manifest in their lives. As well as explore their views of changes in society, regarding everyday racism, during their lifetime employing the theoretical frameworks of Erving Goffman’s (1986) Frame Analysis, and Othering. The purpose was achieved through semi-structured qualitative interviews with five black South Africans. The interviews generated an empirical data which displayed patterns of microaggressions, radicalisation, and white supremacy. The study concluded that the respondents have different views on changes regarding everyday racism in South Africa, some identifying a more progressive society, while others believe that apartheid still has a hold on society., I syfte att bidra till området av samhällsvetenskaplig forskning om rasism i Sydafrika, syftar denna studie till att undersöka hur människors upplevelser av vardagsrasism tar sig uttryck i deras liv.

- Abstract
The reasons for this lie in different conceptions of the target group(s), language(s), and didactic approaches. For the present study, individual interviews were conducted with teachers who teach either biology, chemistry or a language subject and who are intensively involved in language-sensitive teaching within the sensiMINT project. The qualitative analysis of the data shows the complexity of the topic. Notions of having to simplify the language and additive side-by-side thinking of language and subject are discernible, but also cognitive processes in which language is understood in a functional and integrative way. On the one hand, this results in the need for a conceptual sharpening of ‘language-sensitive subject teaching’ and, on the other hand, for increased cooperation between all those involved in language and subject education.

- Abstract
A future-oriented science education refers to everyday experiences, (technical) language and current developments in migration and multilingualism (Kahlert 2022). This requires a participatory bringing together of all areas of knowledge and experience in the classroom (Stoltenberg 2004). The arti-cle discusses tasks in science teaching from different perspectives (semantics, multilingualism, etc.), using the topic “swimming and sinking”, which appears to be a suitable frame of reference for several reasons: (1) the topic is based on a wide range of research; (2) it refers to a precise content area with the phenomenon of buoyancy and the considerations on force, density, interaction; (3) it connects to the living environment, and (4) follows the discourse of everyday language vs. educational language. Based on these items, the article tackles the question of what impact language in science textbooks has on (multilingual) students’ acquisition of science content.

- Abstract
The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, thanks to the numerous applications related to speech recognition, natural language processing, and computer vision. However, one of the challenges facing AI is the requirement for large amounts of energy, time, and data to be effective and accurate. As a result, many researchers are focusing on finding ways to minimize these challenges and make AI more accessible to everyone. One solution that has gained popularity in recent years is the generation of data artificially, either through synthetic or augmented means. Synthetic data is created by first learning how to recreate the structure or knowledge behind real-world data, while augmentation involves artificially changing the original data, such as flipping, rotating, cropping, or scaling. By generating data in this way, researchers can overcome the challenge of acquiring large amounts of real-world data and provide a more cost-effective way of training machine learning models. The lack of direct qualitative comparisons between synthetic and augmented data prompts the goal of this thesis, which aims to investigate the differences between the two approaches in generating data for an analytical tool that analyzes microorganisms. The thesis seeks to explore the effectiveness of each data type by training a segmentation model with the aim of generating accurate and realistic segmentations of microorganisms. The organism's growth rate and size is provided by a segmentation mask used as the base for the image generation. Which, in order to generate realistic images that accurately depict their behavior it needs to be able to recreate imaging noise, halo effect, and relational dependencies. Additionally, a training process is being conducted with an augmentation model to compare the performance of the segmentation model based on different data types, offering valuable insights into their respective advantages and effectiveness

- Abstract
Soil microbiota can confer fitness advantages to plants and increase crop resilience to drought and other abiotic stressors. However, there is little evidence on the mechanisms correlating a microbial trait with plant abiotic stress tolerance. Here, we report that Streptomyces effectively alleviate drought and salinity stress by producing spiroketal polyketide pteridic acid H (1) and its isomer F (2), both of which promote root growth in Arabidopsis at a concentration of 1.3 nM under abiotic stress. Transcriptomics profiles show increased expression of multiple stress responsive genes in Arabidopsis seedlings after pteridic acids treatment. We confirm in vivo a bifunctional biosynthetic gene cluster for pteridic acids and antimicrobial elaiophylin production. We propose it is mainly disseminated by vertical transmission and is geographically distributed in various environments. This discovery reveals a perspective for understanding plant-Streptomyces interactions and provides a promising approach for utilising beneficial Streptomyces and their secondary metabolites in agriculture to mitigate the detrimental effects of climate change.

- Abstract
Especially for primary science studies, there is still a considerable research desideratum concerning the pedagogical and didactical potential of the use of AR as well as for the conception and implementation of corresponding AR tools in general. The aim of the study presented in this paper is to obtain basic insights into how primary school teachers assess the «pedagogical usability» of an AR tool for primary science studies. These assessments, obtained through interviews with primary school teachers, were collected in a qualitative design using a guided interview and evaluated using a structuring qualitative content analysis. Overall, the evaluated AR tool fulfils some sub-aspects of pedagogical usability from the teachers’ point of view (e.g. «motivation» and «student control») and could still be improved in other parts (e.g. regarding «applicability» and «feedback»). It is also evident that the teachers do not or hardly recognize the pedagogical-didactical advantages of AR and can also only partially identify or even name differences between types of AR technologies. The results provide a preliminary basis for further investigations on the teacher‘s role in conceptualizing, evaluating, and implementing highly innovative, technically supported educational tools and for exploring the pedagogical-didactical potential of AR on other topics in primary science and social studies.

- Abstract
Staphylococcus epidermidis expresses glycerol phosphate wall teichoic acid (WTA), but some health care-associated methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (HA-MRSE) clones produce a second, ribitol phosphate (RboP) WTA, resembling that of the aggressive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. RboP-WTA promotes HA-MRSE persistence and virulence in bloodstream infections. We report here that the TarM enzyme of HA-MRSE [TarM(Se)] glycosylates RboP-WTA with glucose, instead of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) by TarM(Sa) in S. aureus. Replacement of GlcNAc with glucose in RboP-WTA impairs HA-MRSE detection by human immunoglobulin G, which may contribute to the immune-evasion capacities of many invasive S. epidermidis. Crystal structures of complexes with uridine diphosphate glucose (UDP-glucose), and with UDP and glycosylated poly(RboP), reveal the binding mode and glycosylation mechanism of this enzyme and explain why TarM(Se) and TarM(Sa) link different sugars to poly(RboP). These structural data provide evidence that TarM(Se) is a processive WTA glycosyltransferase. Our study will support the targeted inhibition of TarM enzymes, and the development of RboP-WTA targeting vaccines and phage therapies.

- Abstract
We consider free-fermion chains in the ground state and the entanglement Hamiltonian for a subsystem consisting of two separated intervals. In this case, one has a peculiar long-range hopping between the intervals in addition to the well-known and dominant short-range hopping. We show how the continuum expressions can be recovered from the lattice results for general filling and arbitrary intervals. We also discuss the closely related case of a single interval located at a certain distance from the end of a semi-infinite chain and the continuum limit for this problem. Finally, we show that for the double interval in the continuum a commuting operator exists which can be used to find the eigenstates., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures

- Abstract
The Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule is used to form an effective potential that is added to the time-dependent configuration-interaction singles (TDCIS) equations of motion in velocity gauge. The purpose of the effective potential is to include virtual coupling from singles to doubles, which is required for size-consistent velocity-gauge TDCIS results. The proposed method is compared to length-gauge TDCIS results for laser-assisted photoionization. Finally, a dynamical interference effect controlled by two-color fields is predicted for atomic targets.

- Abstract
Photoionization of atoms and molecules is one of the fastest processes in nature. The understanding of the ultrafast temporal dynamics of this process often requires the characterization of the different angular momentum channels over a broad energy range. Using a two-photon interferometry technique based on extreme ultraviolet and infrared ultrashort pulses, we measure the phase and amplitude of the individual angular momentum channels as a function of kinetic energy in the outer-shell photoionization of neon. This allows us to unravel the influence of channel interference as well as the effect of the short-range, Coulomb and centrifugal potentials, on the dynamics of the photoionization process.

- Abstract

- Abstract
We investigated the dissociation of dications and trications of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene. PAHs are a family of molecules ubiquitous in space and involved in much of the chemistry of the interstellar medium. In our experiments, ions are formed by interaction with 30.3 nm extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons, and their velocity map images are recorded using a PImMS2 multi-mass imaging sensor. Application of recoil-frame covariance analysis allows the total kinetic energy release (TKER) associated with multiple fragmentation channels to be determined to high precision, ranging 1.94-2.60 eV and 2.95-5.29 eV for the dications and trications, respectively. Experimental measurements are supported by Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations., QC 20230516

- Abstract
The objectives were to assess the effects of dietary Sweet Bran (Cargill Corn Milling, Blair, NE) on performance and feeding behavior of feedlot steers and determine if terminal implant pen sorting affects performance, feeding behavior, and liver abscess (LA) rate. Two hundred sixteen Angus-cross steers (253 +/- 18 kg) were stratified by body weight (BW) to 36 pens. From d 0 to 60, diets contained 40% Sweet Bran (SWBR) or 25% modified distiller's grains and 15% dry rolled corn (MOD; n = 18 pens/treatment). On d 60, steers began transition within treatments to finishing diets containing 25% Sweet Bran or 25% modified distiller's grains (MDGS). On d 111, half of the pens for each dietary treatment were re-stratified by BW to pens (SORT) while the other half were returned to original pens (NOSORT; n = 9 pens/treatment). Steer BW and pen dry matter intake (DMI) were recorded monthly. Rate of feed disappearance was determined on d 5/6, 53/54, 104/105, and 117/118. Pen was the experimental unit for all analyses. The model included the fixed effect of diet for all pre-sort analyses; post-sort analyses included the fixed effects of diet, sort, and the interaction and the random effects of pen and the interaction of diet and pen. On d 60, SWBR had greater BW than MOD (P = 0.05), and SWBR had a greater average daily gain (ADG) from d 0 to 60 (P = 0.05). Though there were no differences after d 28, SWBR had greater DMI d 0 to 28 (P = 0.05). From d 60 to 88, SWBR tended to have lesser ADG than MOD (P = 0.09). Post-sort (d 111 to 196), SWBR tended to have lesser ADG than MOD (P = 0.06), and SORT had a greater rate of feed disappearance than NOSORT (d 117/118; P = 0.01); there were no differences on other dates (Diet: P >= 0.38). For final BW, there was a tendency for MOD to be greater than SWBR, and SORT tended to be greater than NOSORT (Diet: P = 0.06; Sort: P = 0.10). Pre- and post-sort ruminal pH had no treatment by day differences (P >= 0.77). LA incidence averaged 25%, thou

- Abstract
To keep pace with the rapid advancements in molecular genetics and rare diseases research, we have updated the list of ectodermal dysplasias based on the latest classification approach that was adopted in 2017 by an international panel of experts. For this purpose, we searched the databases PubMed and OMIM for the term “ectodermal dysplasia”, referring mainly to changes in the last 5 years. We also tried to obtain information about those diseases on which the last scientific report appeared more than 15 years ago by contacting the authors of the most recent publication. A group of experts, composed of researchers who attended the 8th International Conference on Ectodermal Dysplasias and additional members of the previous classification panel, reviewed the proposed amendments and agreed on a final table listing all 49 currently known ectodermal dysplasias for which the molecular genetic basis has been clarified, including 15 new entities. A newly reported ectodermal dysplasia, linked to the gene LRP6, is described here in more detail. These ectodermal dysplasias, in the strict sense, should be distinguished from syndromes with features of ectodermal dysplasia that are related to genes extraneous to the currently known pathways involved in ectodermal development. The latter group consists of 34 syndromes which had been placed on the previous list of ectodermal dysplasias, but most if not all of them could actually be classified elsewhere. This update should streamline the classification of ectodermal dysplasias, provide guidance to the correct diagnosis of rare disease entities, and facilitate the identification of individuals who could benefit from novel treatment options.

- Abstract
Melanoma cell-intrinsic activation of RIG-I has been found to result in tumor cell death. This study demonstrates that cell death by RIG-I activation in malignant melanoma cells is immunogenic. Melanoma-intrinsic RIG-I activation was accompanied by increased shuttling of immunogenic nucleic acids within extracellular vesicles (EVs). Thus, melanoma cell-intrinsic RIG-I activation triggers the release of EVs containing immunogenic nucleic acids, which mediate T cell-based antitumor immunity., Die Aktivierung von RIG-I in Tumorzellen führt zu deren Zelltod.

- Abstract
Neutrophil granulocytes act as a first line of defense against pathogenic staphylococci. However, Staphylococcus aureus has a remarkable capacity to survive neutrophil killing, which distinguishes it from the less-pathogenic Staphylococcus epidermidis. Both species release phenol-soluble modulin (PSM) toxins, which activate the neutrophil formyl-peptide receptor 2 (FPR2) to promote neutrophil influx and phagocytosis, and which disrupt neutrophils or their phagosomal membranes at high concentrations. We show here that the neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) neutrophil elastase, cathepsin G and proteinase 3, which are released into the extracellular space or the phagosome upon neutrophil FPR2 stimulation, effectively degrade PSMs thereby preventing their capacity to activate and destroy neutrophils. Notably, S. aureus, but not S. epidermidis, secretes potent NSP-inhibitory proteins, Eap, EapH1, EapH2, which prevented the degradation of PSMs by NSPs. Accordingly, a S. aureus mutant lacking all three NSP inhibitory proteins was less effective in activating and destroying neutrophils and it survived less well in the presence of neutrophils than the parental strain. We show that Eap proteins promote pathology via PSM-mediated FPR2 activation since murine intraperitoneal infection with the S. aureus parental but not with the NSP inhibitors mutant strain, led to a significantly higher bacterial load in the peritoneum and kidneys of mFpr2-/- compared to wild-type mice. These data demonstrate that NSPs can very effectively detoxify some of the most potent staphylococcal toxins and that the prominent human pathogen S. aureus has developed efficient inhibitors to preserve PSM functions. Preventing PSM degradation during infection represents an important survival strategy to ensure FPR2 activation.

- Abstract
Only a few birds besides domestic pigeons and poultry can be described as domesticated. Therefore, keeping a pet bird can be challenging, and the human-avian relationship will have a major influence on the quality of this cohabitation. Studies that focus on characterizing the owner-bird relationship generally use adapted cat/dog scales which may not identify its specific features. Following a sociological approach, a concept of human-animal relationship was developed leading to three types of human-animal relationship (impersonal, personal, and close personal). This concept was used to develop a 21-item owner-bird-relationship scale (OBRS). This scale was applied to measure the relationship between pet bird owners (or keepers) (n = 1,444) and their birds in an online survey performed in Germany. Factor analysis revealed that the relationship between owner and bird consisted of four dimensions: the tendency of the owner to anthropomorphize the bird; the social support the bird provides for the owner; the empathy, attentiveness, and respect of the owner toward the bird; and the relationship of the bird toward the owner. More than one quarter of the German bird owners of this sample showed an impersonal, half a personal, and less than a quarter a close personal relationship to their bird. The relationship varied with the socio-demographic characteristics of the owners, such as gender, marital status, and education. This scale supports more comprehensive quantitative research into the human-bird relationship in the broad field of human-animal studies including the psychology and sociology of animals as well as animal welfare and veterinary medicine.

- Abstract
Textbooks are very complex subjects – with different graphical and textual representations and full of stumbling stones for pupils. This article focuses on Austrian textbooks in science education at the primary level, especially on the topic of “objects in water (floating)”. The analysis aims at showing how important this topic is in Austria and which linguistic challenges appear in current textbooks. 148 textbooks between 1900 and 2020 were reviewed, evaluated and compared with another science topic, i.e. “magnetism”. In addition, the text (N=9) are analyzed with regard to linguistic difficulties using the “Wiener Sachtextformel” and criteria according to Bamberger et al. (1989). Throughout the twentieth century, the topic “floating” was increasingly paid attention in Austrian textbooks and the analyzed texts correspond in principle with the primary level. However, a large variance was observed regarding word and sentence length and the frequency of using technical terms. Some exemplary examples illustrate the linguistic challenges.

- Abstract
Language is of high importance for solving tasks in science education, as results of international assessments have repeatedly shown (cf. Andersen 2020; OECD, 2019). The empirical study LiST (Language in Science Tasks) raises the question, which challenges are to be found in terms of language in tasks used in current primary science textbooks. This article presents the results on tasks that activate the pupils’ reflection on basic concepts in science with special focus on pictorial language and the related verbal tasks. It shows examples of tasks that teachers see as supportive for the development of scientific concepts. The results presented here are discussed in the context of an increasing migration and linguistic diversity of primary school classes. On this basis, hypotheses are formulated for the successful conditions of a scientific concepts activating task construction for primary science education. On this basis, hypotheses for a successful task construction that activates scientific concepts in primary science education.
