Based on the work done by an electromagnetic field on an atomic or molecular electronic system, a general gauge-invariant formulation of transient absorption spectroscopy is presented within the semiclassical approximation. Avoiding multipole expansions, a computationally viable expression for the spectral response function is derived from the minimal-coupling Hamiltonian of an electronic system interacting with one or more laser pulses described by a source-free, enveloped electromagnetic vector potential. With a fixed-basis expansion of the electronic wave function, the computational cost of simulations of laser-driven electron dynamics beyond the dipole approximation is the same as simulations adopting the dipole approximation. We illustrate the theory by time-dependent configuration interaction and coupled-cluster simulations of core-level absorption and circular dichroism spectra.

The use of sustainable biomass can be a cost-effective way of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime and aviation sectors. Biomass, however, is a limited resource, and therefore, it is important to use the biomass where it creates the highest value, not only economically, but also in terms of GHG reductions. This study comprehensively evaluates the GHG reduction potential of utilising forestry residue in different bioenergy technologies using a consequential LCA approach. Unlike previous studies that assess GHG impacts per unit of fuel produced, this research takes a feedstock-centric approach which enables comparisons across systems that yield diverse products and by-products. Three technologies—combined heat and power plant with carbon capture, hydrothermal liquefaction, and gasification—are assessed, while considering both carbon capture and storage (CCS) or carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Through scenario analysis, the study addresses uncertainty, and assumptions in the LCA modelling. It explores the impact of energy systems, fuel substitution efficiency, renewable energy expansion, and the up/down stream supply chain. All technology pathways showed a potential for net emissions savings when including avoided emissions from substitution of products, with results varying from −111 to −1742 kgCO2eq per tonne residue. When combining the bioenergy technologies with CCU the dependency on the energy system in which they are operated was a significantly higher compared to CCS. The breakpoint was found to be 44 kg CO2eq/kWh electricity meaning that the marginal electricity mix has to be below this point for CCU to obtain lower GHG emissions. Furthermore, it is evident that the environmental performance of CCU technologies is highly sensitive to how it will affect the ongoing expansion of renewable electricity capacity.

The generation of single photons is highly important in quantum photonic technolo- gies like the photonic quantum computer and quantum cryptography. Extending the use of independent single photon emitters to larger states of collective emitters proves a challenge, since the emitters traditionally need to be spatially very close to couple via the electromagnetic force. Using on-chip semiconductor quantum emitters allows the creation of photonic structures around the quantum emitters. In this thesis pho- tonic crystal waveguides are used to direct the photons mediating the electromagnetic interaction between two quantum dots. This way we are able to extend the electro- magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between the dots, and generate coupled emitter states over distances of several wavelengths. We employ independent tuning of our two quantum dots’ energy levels using local electrical fields, to bring them into resonance. Through measurements of the lifetime of our quantum dots’ excited state and second order correlation function g(2), we are able to detect and explain their collective decay dynamics. We observe signs of both dissipative and dispersive coupling between the quantum dots, as evidenced by directional emission and modified decay rates. Finally some additional noise analysis of the quantum dots is included, as well as some statistical analysis of the feasibility of extending the couple emitter state to several emitters.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one of the most common pathogens responsible for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) globally, with over 80 million annual cases worldwide [1]. In Denmark, surveillance of gonorrhoea has shown a drastic increase in cases from 2022 onwards, similar to other countries across Europe [2]. In Denmark, this has particularly been observed in the Capital region and in the Northern region of Jutland in women and heterosexual men, i.e. men who have sex with women (MSW). Here, we use national surveillance data and genomics to aid our understanding of dissemination and potential drivers of N. gonorrhoeae infections., A surge in gonorrhoea in Denmark has occurred since 2022, a 46% increase from 2021. National surveillance, leveraging mandatory reporting and epidemiological data, highlights three distinct clades linked to heterosexual transmission. Despite the rise, these exhibit high susceptibility, contrasting MSM-associated strains. Geographical hotspots and age-specific patterns further illuminate transmission dynamics. The combination of genomic and epidemiological data provides novel insights into the evolving landscape of gonorrhoea, indicating potential shifts in infection dynamics and transmissibility.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease during childhood and adolescence. The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are among the most frequently affected joints in patients with JIA, and mandibular growth is especially vulnerable to arthritic changes of the TMJ in children. A clinical examination is the most cost-effective method to diagnose TMJ involvement, but clinicians find it difficult to interpret and inaccurate when used only on clinical examinations. This study implemented an explainable artificial intelligence (AI) model that can help clinicians assess TMJ involvement. The classification model was trained using Random Forest on 6154 clinical examinations of 1035 pediatric patients (67% female, 33% male) and evaluated on its ability to correctly classify TMJ involvement or not on a separate test set. Most notably, the results show that the model can classify patients within two years of their first examination as having TMJ involvement with a precision of 0.86 and a sensitivity of 0.7. Background: Physiotherapy appears as a promising therapy option for patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) [1, 2], but the effects of physiotherapy and jaw exercises on JIA-related orofacial symptoms remain unknown [3]. The aim of this proof-of-concept study was to assess the impact of orofacial physiotherapy and home-exercise programs in patients with JIA and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement. Methods: Twelve patients with JIA and TMJ involvement received a treatment of physiotherapy, complemented by prescribed home exercises spanning over eight weeks. Orofacial symptoms and dysfunction were monitored pre-treatment, during treatment, after treatment, and at a three-months follow-up. Results: Orofacial pain frequency and intensity significantly decreased during the course of the treatment (p = 0.009 and p = 0.006), with further reductions observed at the three-month follow-up (p = 0.007 and p = 0.002). During treatment, the mandibular function improved significantly in terms of maximal mouth opening capacity, laterotrusion, and protrusion. Conclusions: This proof-of-concept study shows favourable effects of physiotherapy and home excercises in the management of JIA-related orofacial symptoms and dysfunctions.

OBJECTIVES: Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is common in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). TMJ arthritis can lead to orofacial symptoms, dysfunction and dentofacial deformity with negative impact on quality of life. Management involves interdisciplinary collaboration. No current recommendations exist to guide clinical management. OBJECTIVES: 1) To develop consensus-based interdisciplinary recommendations for management of orofacial manifestations of JIA. 2) To create a future research agenda related to management of TMJ arthritis in children with JIA. METHODS: The recommendations were developed using online surveying of relevant stakeholders, systematic literature review, evidence-informed generation of recommendations during two consensus-meetings, and Delphi study iterations involving external experts. The process included disciplines involved in the care of orofacial manifestations of JIA: Pediatric rheumatology, radiology, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orofacial pain specialists and pediatric dentistry. Recommendations were accepted if agreement was >80% during a final Delphi study. RESULTS: Three overarching management principles and 12 recommendations for interdisciplinary management of orofacial manifestations of JIA were outlined. The 12 recommendations pertained to: diagnosis (n=4), treatment of TMJ arthritis (active TMJ inflammation) (n=2), treatment of TMJ dysfunction and symptoms (n=3), treatment of arthritis-related dentofacial deformity (n=2), and other related aspects to JIA (n=1). Additionally, a future interdisciplinary research agenda was developed. CONCLUSIONS: These are the first interdisciplinary recommendations to guide clinical management of TMJ JIA. The 3 overarching principles and 12 recommendations fill an important gap in current clinical practice. Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X)2, a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator’s non-turbulent ‘neoclassical’ energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas3,4. The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible1,5. We present a highly sensitive and versatile Si-based µ-reactor for photocatalytic experiments. The µ-reactor can be operated in front side (through a borosilicate window) as well as backside (through the catalyst support) illumination. The µ-reactor is sealed by compressing the Si-based microchip, a parafilm gasket and the supported catalyst by four screws. This design allows for fast and reliable assembly of the µ-reactor and the microchip is re-usable for several independent experiments, making the presented µ-reactor ideal for catalyst screening studies. We analyze volatile reactants on-line by connecting the µ-reactor to a mass-spectrometer. The limiting capillary of the µ-reactor allows for nearly 100% collection efficiency (i.e. every produced molecule will be collected) by limiting the gas flow to the mass-spectrometer— enabling highly sensitive measurements and an absolute calibration. Finally, the small height of the reactor volume results in very fast response times, which make the reactor suitable for studies of transient activity phenomena—including catalyst activation and deactivation. We demonstrate these capabilities of the µ-reactor by performing CO oxidation experiments on a TiO2 thin film with subsequent calibration of the chip. Based on a mathematical model of the µ-reactor we additionally present a method for determining the residence time, the reaction volume and the working distance.

Objective To describe a method to calculate the total intra-articular volume (inter-osseous space) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) determined by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This could be used as a marker of tissue proliferation and different degrees of soft tissue hyperplasia in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients. Materials and Methods Axial single-slice CBCT images of cross-sections of the TMJs of 11 JIA patients and 11 controls were employed. From the top of the glenoid fossa, in the caudal direction, an average of 26 slices were defined in each joint (N = 44). The interosseous space was manually delimited from each slice by using dedicated software that includes a graphic interface. TMJ volumes were calculated by adding the areas measured in each slice. Two volumes were defined: Ve−i and Vi, where Ve−i is the inter-osseous space, volume defined by the borders of the fossa and Vi is the internal volume defined by the condyle. An intra-articular volume filling index (IF) was defined as Ve−i/Vi, which represents the filling of the space. Results The measured space of the intra-articular volume, corresponding to the intra-articular soft tissue and synovial fluid, was more than twice as large in the JIA group as in the control group. Conclusion The presented method, based on CBCT, is feasible for assessing inter-osseus joint volume of the TMJ and delimits a threshold of intra-articular changes related to intra-articular soft tissue proliferation, based on differences in volumes. Although there is high interest in realizing the great potential of applying eDNA methods to marine monitoring in the Northeast Atlantic, the implementation process has proven challenging. Researchers and stakeholders lack a common understanding about how eDNA methods can be used as well as a basis for discussing the various challenges and ambitions of both parties. The aim of the UNIFIeD project was to assess the current status of implementation; identifying these challenges and ambitions and provide a basis for enhanced communication between researchers and stakeholders. This report describes results from surveys addressing the key issues of eDNA application, standardization and implementation. In addition, the discussions and consensus from the following workshop is presented.

Background To compare the intrinsic virulence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant with the delta variant in hospitalized adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods All adults hospitalized in the Capital Region of Copenhagen with a positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test for SARS-CoV-2 and an available variant determination from 1 September 2021 to 11 February 2022. Data from health registries and patient files were used. Omicron and Delta patients were matched (1:1) by age, sex, comorbidities, and vaccination status. We calculated crude and adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) for severe hypoxemia and mortality at 30 and 60 days. Results 1,043 patients were included. Patients with Omicron were older, had more comorbidities, were frailer, and more often had three vaccine doses than those with Delta. Fewer patients with Omicron developed severe hypoxemia than those with Delta (aHR, 0.55; 95% confidence interval, 0.38 0.78). Omicron patients exhibited decreased aHR for 30- day mortality compared to Delta (aHR, 0.61; 0.39 0.95). Omicron patients who had received three vaccine doses had lower mortality compared to Delta patients who received three doses (aHR, 0.31;0.16 0.59), but not among those who received two or 0 1 doses (aHR, 0.86; 0.41 1.84 and 0.94; 0.49 1.81 respectively). Similar findings were observed for mortality at 60 days. Similar outcomes were obtained in the analyses of 316 individually matched patients. Conclusions Among adults hospitalized with COVID-19, those with Omicron had less severe hypoxemia and nearly 40% higher 30- and 60-day survival, as compared with those with Delta, mainly driven by a larger proportion of Omicron patients vaccinated with three doses of an mRNA vaccine.

Arctic marine ecosystems act as a global sink of mercury (Hg) and other metals, and high concentrations of these have been measured in higher trophic-level organisms. Nevertheless, the concentrations of metals at the basis of the marine food web in the Arctic is less known despite the likelihood of biomagnification from dietary sources. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg) and other metals in different size fractions of plankton in West Greenland. All size fractions contained detectable levels of Hg (ranging from 4.8 to 241.3 ng g dw−1) at all stations, although with high geographic variability, likely reflecting the sources of mercury (e.g., meltwater). In many cases, the concentrations in the larger-size fractions were lower than in the smaller-size fractions, suggesting depuration through the metabolic activity of mesozooplankton. Concentrations of Cd, Pb, V, Ni, and Cr were higher than previously reported elsewhere in the Arctic.

Shift current photovoltaic devices are potential candidates for future cheap, sustainable, and efficient electricity generation. In the present work, we calculate the solar-generated shift current and efficiencies in 326 different 2D materials obtained from the computational database C2DB. We apply, as metrics, the efficiencies of monolayer and multilayer samples. The monolayer efficiencies are generally found to be low, while the multilayer efficiencies of infinite stacks show great promise. Furthermore, the out-of-plane shift current response is considered, and material candidates for efficient out-of-plane shift current devices are identified. Among the screened materials, MXY Janus and MX2 transition metal dichalchogenides (TMDs) constitute a prominent subset, with chromium based MXY Janus TMDs holding particular promise. Finally, in order to explain the band gap dependence of the PV efficiency, a simple gapped graphene model with a variable band gap is established and related to the calculated efficiencies.

TMJ arthritis can lead to orofacial symptoms, dysfunction and dentofacial deformity with negative impact on quality of life. Management involves interdisciplinary collaboration. No current recommendations exist to guide clinical management. OBJECTIVES: 1) To develop consensus-based interdisciplinary recommendations for management of orofacial manifestations of JIA. 2) To create a future research agenda related to management of TMJ arthritis in children with JIA. METHODS: The recommendations were developed using online surveying of relevant stakeholders, systematic literature review, evidence-informed generation of recommendations during two consensus-meetings, and Delphi study iterations involving external experts. The process included disciplines involved in the care of orofacial manifestations of JIA: Pediatric rheumatology, radiology, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orofacial pain specialists and pediatric dentistry. Recommendations were accepted if agreement was >80% during a final Delphi study. RESULTS: Three overarching management principles and 12 recommendations for interdisciplinary management of orofacial manifestations of JIA were outlined. The 12 recommendations pertained to: diagnosis (n=4), treatment of TMJ arthritis (active TMJ inflammation) (n=2), treatment of TMJ dysfunction and symptoms (n=3), treatment of arthritis-related dentofacial deformity (n=2), and other related aspects to JIA (n=1). Additionally, a future interdisciplinary research agenda was developed. CONCLUSIONS: These are the first interdisciplinary recommendations to guide clinical management of TMJ JIA. The 3 overarching principles and 12 recommendations fill an important gap in current clinical practice. Seal finger (sealer’s finger, spekk finger), an extremely painful hand infection contracted by individuals handling seals, has previously been associated with Mycoplasma phocacerebrale. From 2000 to 2014, six independent strains of a novel Mycoplasma species were isolated at Statens Serum Institut, Denmark, from Scandinavian patients with seal finger (M5725T, M6447, M6620, M6642 and M6879) or septic arthritis (M6921). Prior to the onset of infection, all patients had reported contact with unspeci-ated seals. All isolates grew within 2–5 days in Friis’ modified broth and metabolized glucose and arginine but not urea. Strains M5725T, M6447, M6642 and M6921 also grew in Hayflick-type media. Colonies on agar media were large (0.5–1.0 mm) and had a typical ‘fried egg’ appearance, reduced tetrazolium, and were digitonin sensitive. Growth occurred at 32 °C but not at 42 °C. Strains were susceptible to doxycycline and moxifloxacin but resistant to azithromycin and erythromycin. The genomes of the six strains were sequenced and relatedness to all known Mycoplasma species was inferred. Phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genome single nucleotide polymorphisms showed that the isolated strains were highly similar and phylogenetically distinct from all other species within the genus Mycoplasma. The sizes of the genome sequences of the strains ranged from 744 321 to 772409 bp, with a G+C content of 25.0–25.2 mol%. Based on these analyses, we propose a novel species of the genus Mycoplasma with the name Mycoplasma phocimorsus sp. nov. with the first isolate M5725T (NCTC 14922T=DSM 116188T) as the proposed type strain and representative strains M6447, M6620, M6642, M6879 and M6921.

Background To compare the intrinsic virulence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant with the delta variant in hospitalized adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods All adults hospitalized in the Capital Region of Copenhagen with a positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test for SARS-CoV-2 and an available variant determination from 1 September 2021 to 11 February 2022. Data from health registries and patient files were used. Omicron and Delta patients were matched (1:1) by age, sex, comorbidities, and vaccination status. We calculated crude and adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) for severe hypoxemia and mortality at 30 and 60 days. Results 1,043 patients were included. Patients with Omicron were older, had more comorbidities, were frailer, and more often had three vaccine doses than those with Delta. Fewer patients with Omicron developed severe hypoxemia than those with Delta (aHR, 0.55; 95% confidence interval, 0.38 0.78). Omicron patients exhibited decreased aHR for 30- day mortality compared to Delta (aHR, 0.61; 0.39 0.95). Omicron patients who had received three vaccine doses had lower mortality compared to Delta patients who received three doses (aHR, 0.31;0.16 0.59), but not among those who received two or 0 1 doses (aHR, 0.86; 0.41 1.84 and 0.94; 0.49 1.81 respectively). Similar findings were observed for mortality at 60 days. Similar outcomes were obtained in the analyses of 316 individually matched patients. Conclusions Among adults hospitalized with COVID-19, those with Omicron had less severe hypoxemia and nearly 40% higher 30- and 60-day survival, as compared with those with Delta, mainly driven by a larger proportion of Omicron patients vaccinated with three doses of an mRNA vaccine.

Recent progress towards the confinement of a cold pair plasma is presented, especially the first attempts of combining positrons and electrons in the APEX prototype dipole trap. Positrons from the intense NEPOMUC source are combined with electrons in two different approaches. Massive Dirac fermions are low-energy electronic excitations characterized by a hyperbolic band dispersion. They play a central role in several emerging physical phenomena such as topological phase transitions, anomalous Hall effects, and superconductivity. This work demonstrates that massive Dirac fermions can be controllably induced by lithographically patterning superstructures of nanoscale holes in a graphene device. Their band dispersion is systematically visualized using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with nanoscale spatial resolution. A linear scaling of effective mass with feature sizes is reported, underlining the Dirac nature of the superstructures. In situ electrostatic doping dramatically enhances the effective hole mass and leads to the direct observation of an electronic band gap that results in a peak-to-peak band separation of 0.64 ± 0.03 eV, which is shown via first-principles calculations to be strongly renormalized by carrier-induced screening. The methodology demonstrates band structure engineering guided by directly viewing structurally and electrically tunable massive Dirac quasiparticles in lithographic superstructures at the nanoscale.

A quantum key distribution (QKD) system must fulfill the requirement of universal composability to ensure that any cryptographic application (using the QKD system) is also secure. Furthermore, the theoretical proof responsible for security analysis and key generation should cater to the number N of the distributed quantum states being finite in practice. Continuous-variable (CV) QKD based on coherent states, despite being a suitable candidate for integration in the telecom infrastructure, has so far been unable to demonstrate composability as existing proofs require a rather large N for successful key generation. Here we report a Gaussian-modulated coherent state CVQKD system that is able to overcome these challenges and can generate composable keys secure against collective attacks with N ≈ 2 × 108 coherent states. With this advance, possible due to improvements to the security proof and a fast, yet low-noise and highly stable system operation, CVQKD implementations take a significant step towards their discrete-variable counterparts in practicality, performance, and security.

Background: We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of two neutralising monoclonal antibody therapies (sotrovimab [Vir Biotechnology and GlaxoSmithKline] and BRII-196 plus BRII-198 [Brii Biosciences]) for adults admitted to hospital for COVID-19 (hereafter referred to as hospitalised) with COVID-19. Methods: In this multinational, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, clinical trial (Therapeutics for Inpatients with COVID-19 [TICO]), adults (aged ≥18 years) hospitalised with COVID-19 at 43 hospitals in the USA, Denmark, Switzerland, and Poland were recruited. Patients were eligible if they had laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 symptoms for up to 12 days. Using a web-based application, participants were randomly assigned (2:1:2:1), stratified by trial site pharmacy, to sotrovimab 500 mg, matching placebo for sotrovimab, BRII-196 1000 mg plus BRII-198 1000 mg, or matching placebo for BRII-196 plus BRII-198, in addition to standard of care. Each study product was administered as a single dose given intravenously over 60 min. The concurrent placebo groups were pooled for analyses. The primary outcome was time to sustained clinical recovery, defined as discharge from the hospital to home and remaining at home for 14 consecutive days, up to day 90 after randomisation. Interim futility analyses were based on two seven-category ordinal outcome scales on day 5 that measured pulmonary status and extrapulmonary complications of COVID-19. The safety outcome was a composite of death, serious adverse events, incident organ failure, and serious coinfection up to day 90 after randomisation. Efficacy and safety outcomes were assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population, defined as all patients randomly assigned to treatment who started the study infusion. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04501978. Findings: Between Dec 16, 2020, and March 1, 2021, 546 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to sotrovimab (n=184)

Methods and Results: This is a retrospective descriptive analysis of cerebrospinal fluids and serum samples from 2 hospitalized patients and autopsy findings from 2 patients who died at home. Samples were analysed by 3 independent enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were detected in cerebrospinal fluids and paired serum in all 4 cases. Levels of antibodies in cerebrospinal fluids were highest in samples from a deceased man with critical progression of COVID-19 and detectable SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in cerebrospinal fluid, serum, 4 brain biopsies and 15 additional tissue samples, though immunohistochemical staining for SARS-CoV-2 in brain tissue did not detect the virus. Conclusion: Detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in paired serum and cerebrospinal fluid may support the presence of SARS-CoV-2 neuroinflammatory disease in patients with COVID-19 and neurological manifestations.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate post-COVID-19 fatigue, change in functional capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) eight months after discharge from hospital due to COVID-19.METHODS: A total of 83 patients (35 women) admitted to the Copenhagen University Hospital - North Zealand Hospital, Denmark, for COVID-19 during the period from March to June 2020 were evaluated eight months after discharge using validated questionnaires quantifying fatigue, HRQoL and post-COVID-19 functional status. Follow-up data were correlated with measures of pre-COVID-19 status (anthropometrics, comorbidities) and measures of severity of the acute infection.RESULTS: A total of 22 (65%) women and 12 (26%) men reported excessive fatigue. In all, 20 women (67%) and 17 men (37%) reported decreased physical function. Female sex was associated with fatigue. Loss of physical function was associated with pre-COVID-19 presence of heart disease and absence of lung disease. Severity of the acute COVID-19 infection was not associated with fatigue or change in functional status. Fatigue and functional status were correlated with both generic HRQoL and lung disease-specific HRQoL.CONCLUSIONS: Female sex was associated with a higher risk of fatigue eight months after hospitalisation with COVID-19 infection. Regarding loss of functional capacity after COVID-19, we found an apparently protective effect of pre-COVID-19 lung disease. Our findings underscore the urgent need for further research and the importance of evaluating those recovering from COVID-19 for symptoms of excessive fatigue and change in functional capacity irrespective of the severity of the initial infection.FUNDING: none.TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant.

Global warming accelerates melting of glaciers and increases the supply of meltwater and associated inorganic particles, nutrients, and organic matter to adjacent coastal seas, but the ecosystem impact is poorly resolved and quantified. When meltwater is delivered by glacial rivers, the potential impact could be a reduction in light and nutrient availability for primary producers while supplying allochthonous carbon for heterotrophic processes, thereby tipping the net community metabolism toward heterotrophy. To test this hypothesis, we determined physical and biogeochemical parameters along a 110-km fjord transect in NE Greenland fjord, impacted by glacial meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet. The meltwater is delivered from glacier-fed river outlets in the inner parts of the fjord, creating a gradient in salinity and turbidity. The planktonic primary production was low, 20-45 mg C m-2 d-1, in the more turbid inner half of the fjord, increasing 10-fold to around 350 mg C m-2 d-1 in the shelf waters outside the fjord. Plankton community metabolism was measured at three stations, which displayed a transition from net heterotrophy in the inner fjord to net autotrophy in the coastal shelf waters. Respiration was significantly correlated to turbidity, with a 10-fold increase in the inner turbid part of the fjord. We estimated the changes in meltwater input and sea ice coverage in the area for the last 60 y. The long-term trend and the observed effects demonstrated the importance of freshwater runoff as a key driver of coastal ecosystem change in the Arctic with potential negative consequences for coastal productivity.

Reciprocal interactions between host T helper cells and gut microbiota enforce local immunological tolerance and modulate extra-intestinal immunity. However, our understanding of antigen-specific tolerance to the microbiome is limited. Here, we developed a systematic approach to predict HLA class-II-specific epitopes using the humanized bacteria-originated T cell antigen (hBOTA) algorithm. We identified a diverse set of microbiome epitopes spanning all major taxa that are compatible with presentation by multiple HLA-II alleles. In particular, we uncovered an immunodominant epitope from the TonB-dependent receptor SusC that was universally recognized and ubiquitous among Bacteroidales. In healthy human subjects, SusC-reactive T cell responses were characterized by IL-10-dominant cytokine profiles, whereas in patients with active Crohn's disease, responses were associated with elevated IL-17A. Our results highlight the potential of targeted antigen discovery within the microbiome to reveal principles of tolerance and functional transitions during inflammation.

Colored Petri nets offer a compact and user friendly representation of the traditional P/T nets and colored nets with finite color ranges can be unfolded into the underlying P/T nets, however, at the expense of an exponential explosion in size. We present two novel techniques based on static analysis in order to reduce the size of unfolded colored nets. The first method identifies colors that behave equivalently and groups them into equivalence classes, potentially reducing the number of used colors. The second method overapproximates the sets of colors that can appear in places and excludes colors that can never be present in a given place. Both methods are complementary and the combined approach allows us to significantly reduce the size of multiple colored Petri nets from the Model Checking Contest benchmark. We compare the performance of our unfolder with state-of-the-art techniques implemented in the tools MCC, Spike and ITS-Tools, and while our approach is competitive w.r.t. unfolding time, it also outperforms the existing approaches both in the size of unfolded nets as well as in the number of answered model checking queries from the 2021 Model Checking Contest.

Recent progress towards the confinement of a cold pair plasma is presented, especially the first attempts of combining positrons and electrons in the APEX prototype dipole trap. Positrons from the intense NEPOMUC source are combined with electrons in two different approaches. One demonstrates that the injection of both species using the same electric and magnetic fields is possible, the other demonstrates the successful injection of positrons into a pre-formed dense electron space charge, which even extends the range of feasible injection parameters., Beschrieben werden aktuelle Fortschritte zur Erzeugung eines kalten Paar Plasmas, speziell die ersten Ansätze, um Positronen und Elektronen in die APEX Prototyp Falle einzubringen. We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate post-COVID-19 fatigue, change in functional capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) eight months after discharge from hospital due to COVID-19.METHODS: A total of 83 patients (35 women) admitted to the Copenhagen University Hospital - North Zealand Hospital, Denmark, for COVID-19 during the period from March to June 2020 were evaluated eight months after discharge using validated questionnaires quantifying fatigue, HRQoL and post-COVID-19 functional status. Follow-up data were correlated with measures of pre-COVID-19 status (anthropometrics, comorbidities) and measures of severity of the acute infection.RESULTS: A total of 22 (65%) women and 12 (26%) men reported excessive fatigue. In all, 20 women (67%) and 17 men (37%) reported decreased physical function. Female sex was associated with fatigue. Loss of physical function was associated with pre-COVID-19 presence of heart disease and absence of lung disease. Severity of the acute COVID-19 infection was not associated with fatigue or change in functional status. Fatigue and functional status were correlated with both generic HRQoL and lung disease-specific HRQoL.CONCLUSIONS: Female sex was associated with a higher risk of fatigue eight months after hospitalisation with COVID-19 infection. Regarding loss of functional capacity after COVID-19, we found an apparently protective effect of pre-COVID-19 lung disease. Our findings underscore the urgent need for further research and the importance of evaluating those recovering from COVID-19 for symptoms of excessive fatigue and change in functional capacity irrespective of the severity of the initial infection.FUNDING: none.TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant.
