The performance of the agricultural sector is key for the development of the economy, especially for developing economies. It helps the economy in various ways, such as increased income for farmers, employment in rural areas, and, most importantly, food security. With the growing demand for food, farmers use extensive fertilisers and pesticides to increase productivity. This irrational use of fertilisers reduces soil fertility, pollutes rivers, kills plants and animals, and is linked to many human diseases. Thus, conventional farming raises many concerns related to the environment as well as human health. The emergence of organic farming is because of certain limitations of conventional farming. In our country, organic farming practices are taking a new shape. India has 1.59 million organic producers with 2.7 million hectares of agricultural land under organic agriculture. The current paper aims to describe the evolution and status of organic agriculture in India. It also seeks to probe the impact of organic agriculture on various aspects of farming and economy. The paper also aims to identify the constraints in the growth of organic agriculture. Further, based on the findings, the paper proposes new development models for the sustainable growth of the agriculture sector in India. Through this, a perspective is provided on the current state and policy alternatives with innovative organic farming models for the welfare of farmers and people at large.

Livestock has always been an integral part of nutrient management on organic farms. Environmental, economic and idieological trends are leading to an increasing specialization of agriculture away from mixed farms with livestock. The viability of stockless organic farms has mostly been researched from a nutrient/nitrogen management perspective, with conflicting results on nutrient supply, leading to the question of whether or not livestock is needed. This work is therefore among the first to address this question from a food system perspective. First the nitrogen cycle of two farms (stocked and stockless) was modelled based on real farm data (Hülsbergen 2022), and optimized for a maximum nitrogen output for human consumption (crop and livestock products), while maintaining a balanced nitrogen budget for fair comparability. To answer what role livestock has in sustaining the nitrogen cycle on organic farms, the two farming systems were compared based on nitrogen flows, nitrogen use efficiency, nitrogen recycling rate, total emissions and net food production. In a second step, each farming model was optimised in three scenarios to achieve maximum crude protein, energy and fat output, to see how efficient stockless farming systems are at providing macronutrients compared to stocked farming systems. To make these figures more concrete, the supported human population per farm was calculated on the basis of nutritional requirements of an adult. The stockless farm had a more efficient nitrogen utilization in terms of food production than the stocked, but this could be reversed if nitrogen emissions were better mitigated during storage and application of livestock manure. The optimal livestock density was rather extensive at 0.46 LU ha-1, but organic fertilizer, whether from livestock or biogas plant, was of rather minor importance for the nutrient supply of the soil compared to biological nitrogen fixation. The current study demonstrates the influence of conventional and organic nutrient management practices on nitrogen use efficiency, growth, yield, and physiological and biochemical parameters in four rice varieties, namely, Jaiva, Ezhome 2, Jyothi and Uma. Growth parameters, grain yield per hill, and physiological and biochemical parameters were higher under conventional management for all rice varieties. Although the nitrogen use efficiency of each variety varied significantly with nutrient management practices, the variation was least in Jaiva (23.8%), which is the organic rice variety released by Kerala Agricultural University. The rice varieties Jaiva and Ezhome 2 showed consistency in the grain weight per panicle under both conventional (Jaiva- 4.57 g, Ezhome 2- 5.86 g) and organic (Jaiva, 4.24 g, Ezhome 2, 4.54 g) management. The soil nitrogen content at the tillering stage (0.66**) showed a significantly higher positive correlation with nitrogen use efficiency under organic management. The results of the study provide a better understanding of factors that can lead to a sustained yield in organic rice production in terms of nitrogen use efficiency.

The field trial was carried in Zaid season of 2021 at SHUATS Model of Organic Farm (SMOF), Naini Agricultural Institute, SHUATS, Prayagraj (U.P.). The objective was to study the growth and yield of Black gram as influenced by crop geometry and seed pelleting with botanicals under certified organic production system. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design to study the effect of seed pelleting with leaf powders of three botanicals, viz., Pongamia pinnata, Prosopis juliflora, and Albizia lebbeck, and sown in three different row spacings of 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm, on the growth and yield of black gram. The results revealed that black gram seeds pelleted with Albizia leaf powder and sown at row spacing of 30 cm reported maximum plant height (43 cm), dry weight (12.49 g/plant), number nodules per plant (27.50), seeds per pod (7.07), test weight (42.19 g), grain yield (872.96 kg/ha), and haulm yield (2511.11 kg/ha) which was significantly superior to other treatments.

Amaranth species are a highly popular group of vegetables rich in primary and secondary metabolites, with potential to significantly reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. Yet, their production levels in South Africa (SA) remains unknown and limited to small scale farming where water scarcity is also a problem. Although the production rate of Amaranth is unknown in RSA, the consumption Amaranth has increased over the last few years. The Organic Medium Enclosed Trough (OMET) system is a non-drainable growing technique. OMET system supports and promotes organic and sustainable farming. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of the OMET system on growth and yield in three Amaranth species, including: A. caudatus, A. cruentus and Amaranthus Spp. Data collected for the growth attributes were seedling height, stem diameter, leaf length, root length and time of flowering; whereas for yield attributes, mass of the aerial parts was determined. The nutritional composition data was acquired from determination and quantification of carbohydrates, protein, minerals (Ca, Zn, P, Se, Mg, and Mn) and amino acids. The amount of water used on the OMET and non-OMET (control) was recorded until termination. T-test at 5% level of significance was used to analyse data using computer statistical software, Statistix 10.0. This study revealed that the OMET system had significant impact on the growth and yield of all the three species as shown by the improved and increased growth and yield attributes of the Amaranth. The OMET system increased the stem diameter, plant height and leaf length of A. caudatus by 2.8%, 10.5% and 2.6% respectively; A. cruentus by 25.2%, 21.6% and 11.2% respectively, by 32.4%, 41.2% and 39.6% respectively in Amaranthus Spp. The OMET system increased the root length of A. caudatus, A. cruentus and Amaranthus Spp. by 8, 50.1 and 94.5% respectively. Furthermore, the OMET system significantly increased the mass of aerial parts of A. caudatus, A. cruentus a, National Research Foundation (NRF) and Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)

In de biologische varkenshouderij staat het verschaffen van een ijzerinjectie aan jonge biggen, zoals dat reeds jaren wordt toegepast, onder druk. Of het toedienen van een routinematige injectie met ijzer binnen het kader van een biologische bedrijfsvoering past valt namelijk te bediscussiëren. Dit leeft ook bij certificatieorganisaties. Deze vragen zich luidop af of er geen alternatieven voor handen zijn. Het eerste onderzoek omtrent dit topic dateert al van jaren terug. Ook in tussentijd werd er het één en ander onderzocht vanuit verschillende invalshoeken. De vraag óf ijzerinjectie noodzakelijk is, welke (biologische) alternatieven er voldoende perspectief bieden en welke dosissen aangehouden moeten worden blijft echter nog steeds moeilijk te beantwoorden.

De kennisagenda en de uitvoering van de verschillende acties op kennis en innovatie door het ministerie van LNV en de betrokken partijen is een stap in de groei van biologische productie en consumptie. Deze kennisagenda is verdeeld in 5 onderdelen: 1 Realisatie van de ambitie en de bijdrage van biologische landbouw aan maatschappelijke opgaven; 2 Om meer biologische landbouw te realiseren zetten we in op het vergroten van de biologische consumptie en afzetmarkt; 3. Meer vraag zorgt voor de noodzaak van het vergroten van de biologische productie. De productie is onderverdeeld in algemeen op productie, daarna de kennis- vragen op plantaardig en vervolgens op dierlijke productie; 4 Kennisverspreiding, onderwijs en innovatie. In het laatste hoofdstuk gaan we in op de vervolgstappen voor de uitvoering en herijking van de kennisagenda.

Aan het woord is Achim Tijkorte (Reudink) die vertelt over de kansen en knelpunten van het bijvoeren van producten uit mengteelten. Het project Koplopers in Kringlooplandbouw (KIK) is opgezet in samenwerking met Biohuis en ondersteunt de ambitie van de biologische sector om de kringloop van nutriënten zo snel en zo veel mogelijk te sluiten.

Purpose: This study highlights the significance of sustainable agriculture and delves into the views of women farmers on climate change and their aspirations to adopt sustainable farming practices. Theoretical framework: The opportunity comes in creating fresh methods, abilities, and interventions that foster innovation. The challenge is figuring out ways to mitigate its effects and search for alternatives. Women farmers in particular need creative behaviour and decision-making power to adapt to climate change since they face resource, cultural, societal, and personal constraints. Design/methodology/approach: To better understand how farmers think about climate change, sustainable agriculture, and related topics, we conducted structured, open-ended interviews with them. Twenty-six female farmers in the Himalayan state of Sikkim were chosen using convenience sampling. Qualitative data analysis tools were used to analyse the interview data. A web-based tool was used for sentiment analysis, which also contributed to identifying the themes. Findings: Positive sentiments were identified in the use of organic farming for sustainable agriculture. Most respondents believed that government support is required for large-scale use of organic farming. The respondents also acknowledged the positive effects of vermicomposting. The analysis showed that vermicomposting provides good health and growth to plants and crops. Resilient crop selection was identified as a method that assists in standing against weather fluctuations. Research, Practical & Social Implications: Crop selection based on seasons is vital for good yields. The thematic analysis also presented a positive response toward applying crop rotation, intercropping, and companion cropping. Compared to women with lower decision-making and inventive skills, women with these traits embraced more sustainable agricultural practises. Het LBI is specifiek gevraagd om een appreciatie uit te voeren van de in het concept- Landbouwakkoord (concept-LA) opgenomen afspraken met een specifieke focus op ‘natuurinclusieve kringlooplandbouw’ en de biologische landbouw. In aanvulling op deze opdracht heeft het ministerie van LNV namens het kabinet aan het LBI gevraagd om ook de maatregel: “aanscherping graslandnorm naar bijvoorbeeld 0,40 (t.o.v. graslandnorm 0,25/0,30/0,35)” mee te nemen in deze appreciatie.

De sector moet fundamentele keuzes maken. Hendriks, wel bekend als bodemkundige en als practor kringlooplandbouw verbonden aan Aeres MBO Warmonderhof, legt de sector een dilemma voor. „De sector wil koploper in kringlooplandbouw zijn én ook nog eens volledig biologisch. Dan moeten er wel biologische bronnen zijn waar de mineralen vandaan kunnen komen. Die zijn er, zeker gezien de kleine markt die we in Nederland hebben, voorlopig maar mondjesmaat. Linksom of rechtsom zal de grond verschralen als we niet aanvullen.” Om de bodem gezond te houden, zullen er volgens Hendriks principiële keuzes gemaakt moeten worden om voorop te blijven lopen in de landbouwtransitie. In december 2022 is door de minister het Biologisch Actieplan gelanceerd met als doelstelling 15% biologische landbouw in 2030. Maar wat komt er eigenlijk kijken bij omschakelen? En wat betekend dit op het vlak van bodembeheer? In de nieuwe aflevering van de Bodempodcast leer je er alles over. Healthy soils are the basis for resilient agricultural systems. Yet, on working organic farms in the United States, disentangling the features of soil management that support agricultural resilience remains a key challenge. Importantly, available soil indicators have facilitated efforts to measure expression of soil health on-farm. Despite the widespread focus on quantitative soil indicators, farmers—who are closest to the land, and soil—have been largely omitted from research on soil health. However, if available soil indicators are to be considered effective by farmers, they must be grounded in farmers’ realities and local soil contexts. Engaging with farmer knowledge of soil—and farmers’ approaches to soil management in practice—therefore represents an important and underutilized opportunity to widen our research frame around how assessment of and management of soil on farms is realized. In this dissertation, I take a case study approach, focusing on 13 unique organic farms in Yolo County, California. Across three chapters, I investigate three main questions at the intersection of farmer knowledge, soil nutrient dynamics related to soil health expression, and on-farm management—First, how do organic farmers who are engaged in alternative agriculture acquire, translate, and apply knowledge of their soil? Second, how can we better pinpoint soil nutrient dynamics, in particular nitrogen availability to crops, on working organic farms, and also consider the role of management and soil edaphic characteristics in influencing these belowground soil nitrogen processes? Third, how can farmer knowledge enhance current understanding of soil fertility and nutrient management, especially in relation to available indicators for on-farm soil fertility? Att ställa om till ekologiskt är en presenterad lösning och politiker på nationell och europeisk nivå har satt tydliga mål och åtgärder gällande ekologiskt jordbruk, dels om andelen ekologiskt jordbruk, dels om hur det ska uppnås. En åtgärd EU presenterat är ekodistrikt, som är ett geografiskt område där flera aktörer i livsmedelskedjan hållbart förvaltar de lokala resurserna genom ekologiska metoder och principer. Det har lett till ökad uppmärksamhet för redan befintliga ekodistrikt samt till etableringar av nya ekodistrikt, däribland det första svenska ekodistriktet i landskapet Södermanland, “Ekodistrikt Sörmland”. Rapportens syfte är att ge ökad förståelse för vad som definierar samt möjliggör ekodistrikt samt studera förutsättningar som finns för etableringen av Ekodistrikt Sörmland. I rapporten genomfördes en litteraturstudie om ekodistrikt med bland annat en tematisk analys där relevanta faktorer för etablering av ekodistrikt identifierades: “myndigheter och organisationer”, “bottom-up tillvägagångssätt”, “kultur och turism”, samt “jordbruksmöjligheter”. Även en fallstudie om Ekodistrikt Sörmland utfördes som inkluderade en litteraturstudie med en kompletterande intervju. One course of action, presented by the EU, are biodistricts (Swedish: ekodistrikt), a geographical area wherein stakeholders in the value chain sustainably co-manage the local resources through organic farming principles. EU’s recognition has enabled an increased focus on already established biodistricts, as well as the establishment of new ones, including the first Swedish biodistrict in the region of Södermanland, called "Ekodistrikt Sörmland". The purpose of this report is to provide an increased understanding of what defines and enables biodistricts, as well as to study the conditions for establishing a biodistrict in the region of Södermanland. This was achieved through a literature review on biodistricts, wherein thematic analysis was applied and revealed relevant factors for establishing ecodistricts: “authority and organization”, the “bottom-up approach”, “culture and tourism” and “agricultural capacity”. A case study on Ekodistrikt Sörmland was also performed, which included a complementary interview. The report findings showed that biodistricts are founded on the three dimensions of ecological, social and economic sustainability, through decreased environmental impact, increased market opportunities, and an increase in the local social capital through increased employment opportunities in the countryside. In identifying enabling factors for establishing a biodistrict, findings revealed that local conditions for establishment can vary widely, but that different conditions call for different solutions. Greenhouse food production has intensive fertilizer practices, and it leads to contamination in the soil and food chains. This study investigated the potentially toxic elements (As, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Ni) (PTE) in agriculture soil and their bioaccumulation by dragon fruit and banana. Different fertility tests are conducted to see if there is a correlation between PTEs and fertilizers. CHNS/O analyzer was used to determine organic carbon and nitrogen concentration in the soil. Besides, organic and inorganic phosphorus amounts were analyzed to detect the amount of fertilizer input. Elemental analysis was conducted with ICP-MS. The amount of N, P, and K and PTEs compared and discussed to source the PTEs. Excessive fertilizer practices were acquired, and possible reasons and results were discussed. Besides, the investigations have revealed that concentrations of potentially toxic elements in greenhouse and open-field farms in Gazipaşa/Turkey are below the environmental standards in the soil and fruit samples. Organic farming practices are more dominant than inorganic farming practices in the sampling stations., Seralarda yapılan gıda üretimi yoğun gübre uygulamalarına sahip olup hem toprakta hem de besin zincirlerinde kontaminasyona yol açmaktadır. Bu çalışma, tarım toprağındaki potansiyel olarak toksik elementleri (As, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu ve Ni) (PTE) ve bunların ejder meyvesinde ve muzda olan biyolojik birikimlerini araştırmıştır. PTE'ler ve gübreler arasında bir korelasyon olup olmadığını görmek için farklı verimlilik testleri yapılmıştır. Topraktaki organik karbon ve azot konsantrasyonunu belirlemek için CHNS/O analiz cihazı kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca gübre girdi miktarının tespiti için organik ve inorganik fosfor miktarları analiz edilmiştir. Özellikle PTE tespiti için ICP-MS ile element analizi yapılmıştır. N, P ve K ve PTE'lerin miktarı, PTE'lerin kaynağını tespit edebilmek için karşılaştırıldı ve tartışıldı. Aşırı gübre kullanımı tespit edildi. Bu durumun olası nedenleri ve sonuçları tartışıldı. Ayrıca yapılan araştırmalar, Gazipaşa’daki sera ve açık tarla çiftliklerinde potansiyel toksik element konsantrasyonlarının toprak ve meyve örneklerinde çevre standartlarının altında olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Örnekleme istasyonlarında organik tarım uygulamalarının inorganik tarım uygulamalarına göre daha baskın olduğu da tespit edilmiştir.

This was achieved through a literature review on biodistricts, wherein thematic analysis was applied and revealed relevant factors for establishing ecodistricts: “authority and organization”, the “bottom-up approach”, “culture and tourism” and “agricultural capacity”. A case study on Ekodistrikt Sörmland was also performed, which included a complementary interview. The report findings showed that biodistricts are founded on the three dimensions of ecological, social and economic sustainability, through decreased environmental impact, increased market opportunities, and an increase in the local social capital through increased employment opportunities in the countryside. In identifying enabling factors for establishing a biodistrict, findings revealed that local conditions for establishment can vary widely, but that different conditions call for different solutions. I analyze the role of geographical and cognitive proximity in the decision to adopt organic farming in Sweden for the period 2010–2016. I use longitudinal data, making use of the variation over time of farms’ exposure to earlier adopters in the neighborhood, which I define as per parish. I find that the nearby presence of earlier adopters in the parish influences current adoption, indicating the existence of proximity effects in the diffusion of environmentally sustainable technologies across a diversity of farming industries in Sweden. The effect also becomes more pronounced when farmers share cognitive similarities, defined as per type of farming industry, in particular for the dairy sector and mixed farming activities., Included in doctoral thesis in preprint form.

Greenhouse food production has intensive fertilizer practices, and it leads to contamination in the soil and food chains. This study investigated the potentially toxic elements (As, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Ni) (PTE) in agriculture soil and their bioaccumulation by dragon fruit and banana. Different fertility tests are conducted to see if there is a correlation between PTEs and fertilizers. CHNS/O analyzer was used to determine organic carbon and nitrogen concentration in the soil. Besides, organic and inorganic phosphorus amounts were analyzed to detect the amount of fertilizer input. Elemental analysis was conducted with ICP-MS. The amount of N, P, and K and PTEs compared and discussed to source the PTEs. Excessive fertilizer practices were acquired, and possible reasons and results were discussed. Besides, the investigations have revealed that concentrations of potentially toxic elements in greenhouse and open-field farms in Gazipaşa/Turkey are below the environmental standards in the soil and fruit samples. In organic farming systems, nutrients taken up by crops should be replenished by the recycling of agricultural and urban organic waste to close nutrient cycles. However, the availability of organic wastes permitted for application in organic farming is limited, and organic farmers usually have to apply manure from conventional farms, which is considered to be contentious. Alternative nutrient sources acceptable for application in organic farming are therefore needed to supply available nutrients to maintain or increase organic food production. In this study, we investigated the ability of manure, digested manure, manure co-digested with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, Fertigro® (a by-product from heparin production), and ash from straw to supply N, K and S to ryegrass grown in pots. We sought to establish whether the use of complex mixtures to obtain more suitable nutrient ratios can benefit plant growth. Digested manure and manure co-digested with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste gave on average 50% greater plant growth and 63% higher N recovery than manure, while no significant differences were observed in terms of K recovery. Fertigro® showed similar plant growth and nutrient uptake to the mineral S and N positive controls, while the addition of straw ash demonstrated similar K recovery as that observed for the mineral K positive control. The mixture of Fertigro® with manure co-digested with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and ash was outstanding among the waste-based fertilisers in terms of amount of N, K and S supplied for plant uptake. However, further efforts are needed to confirm these benefits under field conditions.

The creation of focused breeding programs for organic farming systems was encouraged by the expanding market for organic farming. Breeding efforts are being stimulated by the rising demand for soybean varieties that are appropriate for organic farming in order to better meet the unique needs of those involved in the organic value chain. Within the ECOBREED project, extensive phenotyping on 200 soybean genotypes is carried out across contrasting environments in three countries, i.e. Austria, Romania and Serbia, which will enable the identification of useful traits (variation) and the level of local adaptation of genotypes. The following traits are assessed: yield and yield supportive traits, crop growth related traits, grain quality traits, plant architecture. Multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) implemented for genotypes selection, based on multiple traits. U Srbiji se visokoproteinski konzumni hibridi suncokreta proizvode u manjem obimu u konvencionalnim i organskim uslovima proizvodnje, uz stalno povećanje površina pod organskom proizvodnjom. Krupno seme se koristi za veći broj prirodnih zdravih proizvoda i za direktnu potrošnju, dok se od manjih frakcija semena proizvodi hladno presovano suncokretovo ulje. Analizirao se uticaj organskog đubriva: tretmanom Guanito (T1) 0,5 t ha-1 u fazi BBCH 01, dok su tretmani sa Trainerom (T2) 3 l ha-1 i Natur Plasmom (T3) 5 l ha-1 izvedeni u fazi BBCH 36 na sadržaj oleinske kiseline i ulja u semenu NS konzumnih hibrida suncokreta i upoređeni su sa netretiranom kontrolom (C) u organskoj proizvodnji i sa mešanim NPK đubrivom (50:50:50) tretmanom kao kontrolom (K) u konvencionalnoj proizvodnji. Organska đubriva nisu uticala na povećanje sadržaja oleinske kiseline i ulja u poređenju sa kontrolom. Hibridi su se statistički značajno razlikovali po sadržaju oleinske kiseline i ulja u semenu. Large seeds are used in a number of natural health products, as well as for direct consumption, while smaller seed fractions are used in the production of cold-pressed sunflower seed oil. Analysed the effect of organic fertilizer Guanito (T1), 0.5 t ha-1, was performed at the stage BBCH 01, while treatments with Trainer (T2), 3 l ha-1 and Natur Plasma (T3), 5 l ha-1, were carried out at the stage BBCH 36. on seed oleic acid and oil content of NS confectionary sunflower hybrids and compare them with untreated control (C) in organic production and with mixed NPK fertilizer (50:50:50) treatment as control (K) in conventional production. All organic fertilizers hadnot positive effect on oleic acid and oil content compared to control. Organic fertilizers did not affect the increase in oleic acid and oil content compared to the control. The hybrids differed statistically significantly of seed oleic acid and oil content. No interaction was observed between treatment and oleic acid and oil content, nor any statistically significant interaction between treatment and hybrid. NS confectionery hybrids can be successfully grown in conventional and organic production conditions, which is confirmed by the research results, there were no statistically significant differences between oleic acid and oil contentin in the control in organic and conventional growing conditions.

The efforts of agroecology-oriented farmers and peasants’ organizations have been studied in depth in relation to their political expression, but less so with regard to the forms they adopt to strengthen the socio-economic viability of small- and medium-sized farms within sustainable food systems. Whilst farmers’ self-organization represents a core process in the development of Agroecology-based Local Agri-food Systems (ALAS), the development of collective, economic structures among agroecology-oriented farmers’ is still weak. In an attempt to understand why and how agroecology-oriented farmers are constructing their own position within ALAS, and the challenges they are facing in this sense, we conducted a qualitative study on the self-organizational processes and structures of five Agroecology-Oriented Farmers’ Groups in Spain. Based on 27 interviews and six online, participatory workshops, our results reveal different reasons for joining and setting up farmers’ groups as non-mixed collective spaces, with instrumental and social factors constituting the principal motivations. Politics and advocacy aroused controversy and were only observed in the biggest, most powerful and well-structured organizations. The main challenges identified refer to the precariousness and isolation of farmers, as well as of the different local groups. The weakness of the Agroecology-Oriented Farmers’ Groups highlights the need for further action-oriented research and accompaniment

The pandemic has been a real shock, also in the markets for sustainable agricultural products. This article analyses, firstly and through secondary data, the changes in the consumption patterns of fresh produce of Spaniards during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the changes in the typology of channels and types of purchasing establishments. Secondly, primary data (surveys and interviews) are used to analyse the perception that a sample of farmers from Valencia (linked to sustainable production) have of the impact of confinement, and their response and adaptation strategies. The results highlight, on the consumers' side, changes in consumption habits (direct and internet purchases, higher quality, etc.) and, on the producers' side, differentiated strategies, with equally different effects depending on the initial production environment (certified organic farming versus sustainable practices) or the time elapsed (response in the first moments of confinement versus the response they were able to give after a few months), among others., La pandemia ha supuesto un verdadero shock, también en los mercados de productos agrícolas sostenibles. To counter the global spread of anthelmintic resistance (AR), considerable efforts have been invested in the development and dissemination of sustainable alternatives to control gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections in small ruminants. The degree to which these have been accepted and integrated by farmers, particularly in organic systems, where the drive to reduce chemical inputs is arguably even more pressing, has been little studied. To identify whether more comprehensive actions are needed to support the uptake of alternative GIN controls amongst organic farmers, this study conducted a survey in five European countries on organic dairy goat and meat sheep farmers to gain insight into current GIN control strategies and farmer attitudes towards AR and alternative measures in these countries. The structured survey was disseminated in the five European countries Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Lithuania and United Kingdom, receiving a total of 425 responses, 106 from organic dairy goat farmers and 319 from organic meat sheep farmers. Regression analyses were carried out to identify factors impacting anthelmintic drenching on meat sheep production systems, whereas all data were analysed descriptively. Four key findings emerged: i) The frequency of anthelmintic treatments averaged less than two per animal a year in all production systems; ii) Overall, organic farmers seemed well informed on the availability of alternative GIN control methods, but fewer stated to put them into practice; iii) Targeted selective treatment (TST) strategies of anthelmintics appears to be not commonly incorporated by organic farmers; iv) Despite operating under national and EU organic regulations, each of the organic dairy goat (Switzerland, France and Netherlands) and meat sheep (Switzerland, Lithuania and United Kingdom) production systems developed distinct approaches for GIN control. Soil health is a part of the sustainable agriculture which the EU is trying to develop. Organic farming can be one way of working towards more healthy soils. The term soil health can be divided into biological, chemical, and physical aspects of the soil that are necessary to sustain the plants grown. This master thesis was conducted within the CONSTRAINTS-project which aims to provide knowledge to help improve the expansion of organic agriculture systems in regions of high productivity with proportionally few organic farms. The purpose of this master thesis was to assess the soil health on a group of organic fields with varying management in Västra Götaland, Sweden. The fields were included in the CONSTRAINTS-project and had varying management. The soil health was studied by analysing the bulk density (BD), potential mineralisation of nitrogen (pot-min), visible and near infrared reflectance (vis-NIR), clay content, pH, and plant nutrients. The BD, pot-min and vis-NIR were measured using soil samples collected during the summer of 2022. Clay content was retrieved from a digital soil map whereas soil pH and plant nutrients were analysed in an earlier soil sampling during autumn 2021 within the CONSTRAINTS-project. The different soil health indicators were related to the farmers’ management, which was collected through interviews, and the yield. The results showed variations in the measured indicators between the different fields and statistical analyses were made to link the measured indicators to the yield. The soil health indicators that were closest related to the winter wheat yield were pH, and vis-NIR measurements (which are strongly related to clay and SOM content). The management practices that were most correlated with yield were connected to the fertilisation, age of the ley and proportion of legumes in the ley. Termen jordhälsa kan delas upp i biologiska, kemiska och fysiska aspekter som är nödvändiga i jorden för att växterna ska kunna utvecklas och överleva. Detta examensarbete utfördes som en del i CONSTRAINTS-projektet, vars målsättning är att ta fram kunskap för att kunna utveckla den ekologiska odlingen i områden där det finns en hög produktivitet men låg andel ekologiska gårdar. Syftet med detta examensarbete var att kartlägga jordhälsan på en grupp ekologiska gårdar, med varierande odlingsåtgärder, i Västra Götaland. Detta utfördes genom analyser av ett antal indikatorer: skrymdensitet (BD), potentiell mineralisering av kväve (pot-min), vis-NIR, lerhalt, pH och växtnäringsämnen. Skrymdensitet, pot-min och vis-NIR mättes på jordprover som samlades in under sommaren 2022. Information om lerhalt hämtades från den digitala åkermarkskartan medan pH och tillgänglig växtnäring kom från en tidigare jordprovtagning under hösten 2021 inom CONSTRAINTS-projektet. Resultaten visade på variationerna i indikatorerna mellan de olika gårdarna och statistiska analyser utfördes för att relatera indikationerna till skörd. Odlingsåtgärderna på de olika gårdarna undersöktes med hjälp av intervjuer. Indikatorerna för jordhälsa som var starkast relaterade med skörden var pH och vis-NIR mätningarna (som är starkt relaterade till lerinnehåll och andel organiskt material i jorden). Osnovni izvor proteina biljnog porekla, ulja i celuloznih vlakana za ishranu ljudi i domaćih životinja obezbeđuje se proizvodnjom jednogodišnjih i višegodišnjih biljnih vrsta iz familije Fabaceae (leguminoza). Savremeni načini upotrebe leguminoza dolaze do izražaja u različitim granama industrije, posebno u farmaceutskoj industriji, zatim kao obnovljivi izvori energije, a sve više su zastupljene kao usevi za obezbeđivanje različitih ekoloških servisa. Leguminoze imaju izuzetan agrotehnički značaj u svim sistemima poljoprivredne proizvodnje zbog sposobnosti biološke fiksacije atmosferskog azota, što posebno dolazi do izražaja u organskoj poljoprivredi usled nemogućnosti primene mineralnih azotnih đubriva. Cilj ovog rada je predstavljanje trenutnog stanja proizvodnih površina u organskoj proizvodnji leguminoza u Republici Srbiji, zastupljenosti biljnih vrsta, potencijala azotofiksacije i preduslova daljeg širenja površina. The purpose of this article is to discuss the main objectives of the European Green Deal for agriculture and present the perspectives on the development of organic production in Poland. In 2020 the share of organic farming in agricultural areas in Poland was 3.5% (with an EU average of 8.5%), while organic farms accounted for only 1,4% of all farms in Poland. Since 2014, Poland has seen a decrease in the area intended for organic production as well as a drop in the number of organic farms. This is the opposite trend to what was expected and supported by the Common Agricultural Policy. The research hypothesis assumed proposes that the difficulties related to the greening of farming are a consequence of the socio-economic condition, consumers’ purchasing power on the organic foods market and the state of farming in Poland. Based on the EU and domestic law, the article explains the principles of organic farming. Further, using statistical data for the years 2004–2020, it discusses and compares the production and economic situation of organic farms in Poland and the EU. It analyses the EU strategies and national plans calling for more action on organic farming. The summary indicates the strengths and weaknesses as well as challenges and opportunities facing organic farming in Poland., Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie stanu obecnego rolnictwa ekologicznego w Polsce na tle innych państw członkowskich UE oraz wskazanie perspektyw rozwoju produkcji ekologicznej w kontekście promowanych w ramach Europejskiego Zielonego Ładu zmian w rolnictwie. W 2020 roku udział rolnictwa ekologicznego w powierzchni użytków rolnych w Polsce wyniósł 3,5% (przy średniej wynoszącej w UE 8,5%) zaś udział gospodarstw ekologicznych w ogóle gospodarstw rolnych liczył jedynie 1,4%. Od 2014 roku można zaobserwować w Polsce spadek zarówno powierzchni przeznaczonej pod ekologiczną produkcję, jak i liczby ekologicznych gospodarstw rolnych. Jest to trend odwrotny od tego jaki był oczekiwany oraz wspierany w ramach Wspólnej Polityki Rolnej. Przyjęta hipoteza badawcza zakłada, że trudności związane z ekologizacją produkcji rolnej są pochodną sytuacji gospodarczo-społecznej, w tym siły nabywczej konsumentów na rynku żywności ekologicznej w Polsce oraz kondycji rolnictwa. W artykule wyjaśniono w oparciu o unijne i krajowe akty prawne zasady produkcji ekologicznej. Następnie omówiono i porównano sytuację produkcyjno-ekonomiczną gospodarstw ekologicznych w Polsce i w UE, korzystając z danych statystycznych z lat 2004–2020. Przeanalizowano unijne strategie i krajowe plany nawołujące do intensyfikacji działań na rzecz rolnictwa ekologicznego. W podsumowaniu wskazano mocne i słabe strony oraz wyzwania i szanse stające przed ekologicznym rolnictwem w Polsce.

In the EU, including Sweden, organic farming is seen as a promising pathway for sustainable production, protecting human health and animal welfare, and conserving the environment. Despite positive developments in recent decades, expanding organic farming to the Swedish national target of 30% of farmland under organic production remains challenging. In this study, we developed two scenarios to evaluate the role of organic farming in the broader context of Swedish food systems: (i) baseline trend scenario (Base), and (ii) sustainable food system scenario (Sust). Base describes a future where organic farming is implemented alongside the current consumption, production and waste patterns, while Sust describes a future where organic farming is implemented alongside a range of sustainable food system initiatives. These scenarios are coupled with several variants of organic area: (i) current 20% organic area, (ii) the national target of 30% organic area by 2030, and (iii) 50% organic area by 2050 for Sust. We applied the ‘FABLE (Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land-use and Energy) Calculator’ to assess the evolution of the Swedish food system from 2000 to 2050 and evaluate land use, emissions and self-sufficiency impacts under these scenarios. Our findings show that expanding organic farming in the Base scenarios increases the use of cropland and agricultural emissions by 2050 compared to the 2010 reference year. However, cropland use and emissions are reduced in the Sust scenario, due to dietary changes, reduction of food waste and improved agricultural productivity. This implies that there is room for organic farming and the benefits it provides, e.g. the use of fewer inputs and improved animal welfare in a sustainable food system. Biologisch sluit aan bij kringlooplandbouw, landschapsgrond en stikstofbeleid. Uitdagingen zitten in imago, draagvlak en kennisdeling. Is de biologische sector klaar voor de (nabije) toekomst?

Slurry acidification is effective for reducing gaseous emissions during slurry storage. However, an alternative to sulfuric acid traditionally used is needed. This study investigated the efficiency of slurry bio-acidification treatment by adding different types and amounts of fermentable substrates to initiate and sustain the fermentation process. The carbon pools in the slurry were quantified to understand the mechanisms involved during the bio-acidification. Substrate addition efficiently reduced slurry pH during storage via lactic acid production. Substrates with a low pH proved beneficial in initiating the fermentation process, but higher glucose dosage did not produce the highest lactic acid concentration. Once the treated slurries reached pH 4.2 during the fermentation process, the production of lactic acid was promoted and provided substrate was still available, the weaker volatile fatty acids were avoided, resulting in lower CH4 emissions. In conclusion, bio-acidification could replace the sulfuric acid to reduce gaseous emissions during slurry storage.

Current and future challenges, such as the ecological conversion and digital transformation of agricultural production, but also social, economic and cultural aspects haven been addressed transcending prevailing patterns. From organised vegetarianism in the 19th century to wholefoods and natural foods in the 20th century to the "organic boom" of the recent past, he traces and analyses the transformations of non-conformist innovations into supposed mainstream phenomena: What exactly was adapted and made compatible and how? What factors influenced the processes? With his synthesis, the author makes a sound theoretical contribution to modelling cultural dynamics.

This study aimed to compare weed flora in conventionally and organically grown medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs): basil, pot marigold, dill, and peppermint; in terms of weed composition and weed abundance. A total of 28 weed species (25 and 15 species in conventional and organic crops, respectively) were identified. The presence and abundance of certain weed species were affected by MAP species and farming system. Higher weed diversity and weediness, and lower floristic similarity were found in conventionally grown crops. Also, the analysed MAPs differed in weediness by individual weed species. Correspondence analysis pointed to conventional and organic MAPs with the most frequent and most abundant weed species. Setaria pumila and Portulaca oleracea were the most frequent species in conventional; and Amaranthus retroflexus, Datura stramonium, and Sorghum halepense in organic crops. In both conventional and organic farming systems, therophytes were the most dominant life forms indicating a strong anthropogenic influence. The results should contribute to establishing weed control measures that are adequate for the two farming systems.

In northwest Spain and Portugal, there is a long tradition of cultivating B. rapa subsp. rapa to obtain turnip greens and turnip tops. Brassica rapa L. subsp. rapa (turnip greens and turnip tops) were grown under conventional and organic conditions in two Farms in southern Spain. Glucosinolatescontents were higher in Brassicas grown under conventional conditions than those grown under organic ones. Average Ca total and bioaccessible contents ranged between 14.6-23.4 mg/g; 8.9-12.0 mg/g for turnip greens and 6.4-8.9 mg/g; 4.3-4.8 mg/g for turnip tops. According to these concentrations, an intake of 100-200 g (fresh weight) of the studied Brassica rapa fulfills Ca dietary reference intakes (DRI) (considering the total content data) and complies with 72-100% Ca DRI percentage (considering the bioaccessible data). Se concentrations ranged between 0.061-0.073 µg/g and 0.039-0.053 µg/g for turnip greens and turnip tops respectively. Se bioaccessibility values were high, with percentages of around 90%. Finally, the total glucosinolate content ranged between 13.23-21.28 µmol/g for turnip greens and 13.36-20.20 µmol/g for turnip tops. In general, the bioaccessibility of the total glucosinolates analyzed in this study was high, with mean values of around 73% and 66% for turnip greens and turnip tops, respectively. Brassica rapa vegetables grown under both organic and conventional conditions in southern Spain are an excellent dietary source of Ca, Se, and glucosinolates with a high bioaccessibility.

The rhizosphere is a dynamic environment in which many parameters may influence biogenicity. The important factors determining the microbial community in the rhizosphere are plant and soil nutrient supply. The aim of this paper was to determine the abundance of basic microbiological groups in the rhizosphere of four wheat subspecies, in three fertilization treatments in the organic farming system. A field experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with four replicates. It was carried out on the leached chernozem soil type. There was significant variability in the abundance of the studied physiological groups of microorganisms between the wheat subspecies, as well as between the fertilization treatments. The rhizosphere of common wheat had the greatest abundance of fungi (24.37 x 103 g-1). The rhizosphere of compactum wheat had the largest abundance of oligonitrophilic bacteria (361.47 x 105 g-1) and amonificators (119.27 x 105 g-1). There were no significant differences in the abundance of actinomycetes between the cultivars of common, compactum and durum wheat, but their lowest number was found in the spelt wheat cultivar (11.25 x 103 g-1). The combined application of biofertilizer and organic fertilizer resulted in a significantly greater abundance of amonificators (56.6%), fungi (28.2%) and oligonitrophiles (14.6%) than in the control treatment. The results show that the crop variety and application of appropriate fertilizer formulations can influence the abundance of the studied groups of microorganisms.
