Aim: To analyze the relationship between maternal characteristics and actions to maintain children's oral health with oral hygiene in primary school-aged children Method: This type of research is quantitative analytical with a cross-sectional approach. The population is students from SD Negeri Seberang Mesjid 1 Banjarmasin. The sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique of 5th-grade students and their mothers. Data collection on characteristics and perspectives of maternal actions used a questionnaire instrument. Meanwhile, data on oral hygiene uses the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) examination sheet. Data analysis used an alternative relationship test, namely Fisher's Exact Test. Results: Most mothers (47.1%) had actions to maintain their children's oral health in the good category. Meanwhile, most children's oral hygiene (49.4%) was in the poor category. The results of the correlation test showed (p-value) that the child's oral hygiene with the mother’s education = 0.000, the mother’s occupation = 0.001, the mother’s exposure to information = 0.000, the family’s income = 0.014, and the mother's age = 0.596. In the correlation test between the mother's actions in maintaining her child's oral health and the children's oral hygiene, it was found that p-value = 0.000. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between maternal characteristics which include: education, occupation, family income, and the mother's actions. Meanwhile, the mother's age is not significantly related to the mother's actions. There is a significant relationship between the mother's actions in maintaining her child's oral health and the oral hygiene of primary school-aged children. Bakalářská práce se zabývá orální hygienou a prevencí v oblasti stomatologie u vysokoškolských studentů nelékařského zdravotnického oboru. Práce zahrnuje teoretickou a průzkumnou část. V teoretické části jsou přiblíženy informace o orální hygieně, o správném způsobu jejího provedení a o prostředcích, které lze při hygieně použít. Také jsou v ní popsány druhy prevence ve stomatologii, zubní kaz a onemocnění parodontu. Cílem práce bylo zjistit přístup vysokoškoláků k orální hygieně a stomatologické prevenci. Průzkumná část byla provedena formou kvantitativního šetření za použití dotazníku vlastní tvorby, přičemž data z dotazníku byla dále zpracována pomocí grafů a tabulek s jejich následným zhodnocením. Z průzkumu vyplynulo, že studenti mají chybný postoj k jejich vlastní péči o dutinu ústní, a to převážně v oblasti časového provedení orální hygieny, v oblasti preventivních a dentálních prohlídek., The bachelor thesis deals with oral hygiene and prevention in the field of stomatology among non-medical healthcare students. The thesis includes a theoretical and exploratory part. The theoretical part provides information on oral hygiene, the correct way to perform it, and the tools that can be used for hygiene. It also describes types of prevention in dentistry, dental caries, and periodontal diseases. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the approach of university students to oral hygiene and dental prevention. The exploratory part was conducted in the form of a quantitative survey using a self-designed questionnaire, with the questionnaire data further processed using graphs and tables with subsequent evaluation. Given the high prevalence of caries in deciduous and permanent teeth in children worldwide, it is necessary to expand educational programs for students at various levels, to engage in health education initiatives targeting parents, teachers, and policymakers. Such efforts aim to foster interest and awareness among stakeholders involved in shaping health policies. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of the "Form for recording oral hygiene skills of children aged 3 to 5 years," developed by our team, as a means to enhance children's oral hygiene proficiency. Following the implementation of preventive measures in the first group, we observed a notable enhancement in the oral hygiene index, decreasing from 1.71 to 1.55 points between the initial and final assessments. This improvement correlates with the advancement of children's practical skills with age, alongside the active involvement of parents in their children's oral care routines. In the second group, the hygiene index significantly worsened with each examination. A comparison of this index between the groups at the second and third examinations revealed a significant difference. Children were also divided into groups, which we monitored according to the state of oral hygiene. In the first group, 45.7% of children had good oral hygiene during the first examination, 53.3% during the second, and 72.4% during the third. This rise can be attributed to a decrease in cases of children exhibiting poor hygiene, dropping from 20% to 6.9%. In the second group, children with good hygiene decreased from 51.4% to 28%. The group average remained satisfactory at each visit, but the number of children with poor hygiene increased from 14.3% to 52%. All of the above is aimed at reducing caries of temporary teeth, which is the main unresolved issue of modern pediatric dentistry.

Background: Previous studies have confirmed that bacteria found in the oral cavity are of great risk for acquiring pneumonia in an ICU. Introduction: The main pathophysiological mechanism of VAP is the repeated microaspiration of microorganisms that colonize the oral and pharyngeal cavity, favored by the maintained opening of the vocal cords by the endotracheal tube. Oral decontamination with topical application of 0.12% CHX has been used to reduce the bacterial load when performing oral hygiene. Objective: Systematize the scientific bibliographic documentation referring to oral hygiene measures as nursing care for the prevention of pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation in an ICU. Method: The prism method was used. Content analysis based on analogies of findings and meta-analysis. The relevant bibliography was selected in databases with indexed journals. Qualitative approach. Universe of 25 scientific references from 2017 to 2022. Results: The synthesis of the main findings of each RCT showed the quality of the studies reviewed and their contributions in nursing care as well as the trends evidenced in the review based on categories that were built in meta-analysis as an important contribution.Conclusions: Improve nursing care in ICUs regarding oral hygiene, avoiding VAP. Differences were found in the designs of intervention research, concluding that it is difficult to establish the optimal oral care protocol based on current evidence., Antecedentes: Los estudios previos han confirmado que las bacterias que se encuentra en la cavidad bucal son de gran riesgo para adquirir neumonía en una UCI. Introducción: El principal mecanismo fisiopatológico de la NAV es la microaspiración repetida de microorganismos que colonizan la cavidad oral y faríngea, favorecida por la apertura mantenida de las cuerdas vocales por el tubo endotraqueal. Se ha empleado para la reducción de la carga bacteriana, la descontaminación oral con aplicación tópica de CHX al 0,12% en la realización de la higiene oral. Objetivo: Sistematizar la documentación bibliográfica científica referida a las medidas de higiene bucal como cuidados de enfermería para la prevención de neumonía asociada a ventilación mecánica en una UCI. Método: Se utilizó el método prisma. Análisis de contenido basado en analogías de hallazgos y metanálisis. Se seleccionó la bibliografía pertinente en bases de datos con revistas indexadas. Enfoque cualitativo. Universo de 25 referencias científicas del 2017 hasta 2022. Resultados: La síntesis de los hallazgos principales de cada ECA mostraron la calidad de los estudios revisados y sus aportes en cuidados enfermeros así como las tendencias evidenciadas en la revisión a partir de categorías que se construyeron en el metanálisis como aporte importante.Conclusiones: Mejorar el cuidado enfermero en las UCI respecto a higiene oral evitando NAV. Se encontraron diferencias en los diseños de las investigaciones de intervención, concluyendo que es difícil establecer el protocolo óptimo de cuidado bucodental a partir de la evidencia actual.

Nutritional status, hygiene conditions, and oral status are preventable conditions that affect infants and young children, with a higher prevalence in those fed formula. Previous research has focused on different outcomes for oral health and healthy weight gain. However, the etiology may be linked through overlapping obesogenic and cariogenic feeding behaviors, such as increased exposure to sugar through bottle support and overfeeding. This systematic review aimed to identify interventions that support oral health conditions, hygiene and weight outcomes. They searched nine databases and found 25 studies that met the predetermined inclusion criteria. 12 studies focused on vulnerable populations by measuring their Body Mass Index and relating it to the prevalence of cavities. 8 studies addressed the antecedents of obesogenic or cariogenic behaviors. Only 5 studies related childhood malnutrition to oral health. Although some studies reported that these conditions are closely linked, others demonstrated the opposite. Many study designs were at risk of bias. It is concluded that there is a relationship between the three variables of health conditions, oral hygiene and nutritional states, finding alterations in the latter and relating to pathologies such as cavities and enamel hypoplasia., El estado nutricional, las condiciones de higiene y el estado bucal son condiciones prevenibles que afectan a los bebés y niños pequeños, con una mayor prevalencia en los alimentados con fórmula. Investigaciones anteriores se han centrado en distintos resultados para la salud oral y el aumento de peso saludable. Sin embargo, la etiología puede estar vinculada a través de comportamientos de alimentación obesogénicos y cariogénicos superpuestos, como una mayor exposición al azúcar a través del apoyo del biberón y la sobrealimentación. Esta revisión sistemática tuvo como objetivo identificar las intervenciones que respaldan las condiciones de la salud bucal, higiene y los resultados de peso. Se buscaron en nueve bases de datos y encontraron 25 estudios que cumplían con los criterios de inclusión predeterminados. 12 estudios se centraron en poblaciones vulnerables midiendo su Índice de Masa Corporal y relacionándolo con la prevalencia de caries. 8 estudios abordaron los antecedentes de los comportamientos obesogénicos o cariogénicos. Solo 5 estudios relacionaron la desnutrición infantil con la salud oral. Si bien algunos estudios informaron que estas condiciones se encuentran íntimamente ligadas otras demostraban lo contrario. Introduction: Pediatric liquid medications (PLM) are frequently administered to children, yet their usage may contribute to the onset of dental caries. Despite its prevalence, there is a notable scarcity of scientific research regarding caregivers’ knowledge of this potential cariogenic risk. Objective: This study aims to assess the knowledge of the main caregivers of children aged 5 to 12 years concerning the cariogenic potential associated with the use of PLM. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analytical obser-vational study involving 152 primary caregivers of children aged 5 to 12 was conducted. Data were collected on caregivers’ perceptions of the cariogenic risk associated with PLMs and their consumption habits. The study also assessed oral hygiene routines and evaluated the level of information provided by healthcare professionals. Results: Research findings indicated a significant lack of awa-reness among primary caregivers regarding the cariogenic risks of PLMs, with 78.95% being unaware of these risks and 47.37% unaware of the sugars present in such medications. Additionally, a high rate of PLM consumption was observed, with 63% of caregivers using them in the last year. The study underscored a notable absence of guidance from healthcare professionals, as 91.45% of the caregivers stated that they had not received instructions on tooth brushing after the administration of the PLM. Conclusions: The study highlights a significant lack of awa-reness among primary caregivers regarding the cariogenic risks associated with the ingestion of pediatric liquid medications. This deficit in information and preventive measures presents a substantial obstacle to children’s oral health. To address this issue, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to offer comprehensive guidance and promote preventive measures., Introducción: La administración de medicamentos líquidos pediátricos (MLP) es una práctica común en la población infantil y puede estar vinculada al desarrollo de lesiones de caries dental. Sin embargo, la evidencia científica que aborda el conocimiento de los cuidadores acerca de este riesgo cariogénico es escasa. Objetivo: Este estudio busca determinar el conocimiento de los cuidadores principales de niños de 5 a 12 años sobre el potencial cariogénico asociado al consumo de MLP. Materiales y Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio observacional analítico transversal que incluyó a 152 cuidadores principales de niños en el rango de edad de 5 a 12 años. Se recopiló información sobre la percepción de los cuidadores acerca del riesgo cariogénico de los MLP, así como sobre sus patrones de consumo. Además, se registraron las prácticas de higiene oral y se evaluó el nivel de información proporcionado por los profesionales de la salud. Resultado: Los hallazgos de la investigación revelaron que un 78,95% de los cuidadores principales desconocen el riesgo cariogénico asociado al consumo de medicamentos líquidos pediátricos (MLP), y un 47,37% de ellos no eran conscientes de la presencia de azúcares en dichos medicamentos. Además, se observó un elevado índice de consumo de MLP, con un 63% de los cuidadores que los utilizaron en el último año. Se destacó la falta de orientaciones por parte de los profesionales de la salud, ya que, un 91,45% de los tutores afirmaron no haber recibido instrucciones sobre el cepillado dental posterior a la administración de los MLP. Conclusión: Este estudio evidencia un relevante porcentaje de desconocimiento entre los cuidadores principales acerca del riesgo cariogénico asociado a la ingesta de medicamentos líquidos pediátricos. La falta de información y medidas preventivas constituye un desafío significativo para la salud oral de los niños. Background: Occupation significantly influences oral health, with factors like the work environment, stress levels, access to dental care, and job-related habits playing crucial roles. The oral health of construction workers, especially migrant workers, is a noteworthy concern. Understanding the oral health of this population is crucial for enhancing their quality of life through various means. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of dental caries, oral hygiene status, and deleterious habits in this occupational group of Belagavi district, Karnataka. Materials and Methods: Study design was cross-sectional in nature. After a pilot study, multi-stage random sampling technique was employed, and 610 participants were recruited. Trained and calibrated examiners recorded WHO dentition status and treatment needs (2013) and Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S). Collected data was analyzed using descriptive analysis, chi-square, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Prevalence of dental caries among construction workers was significantly higher (81%) and 36.9% had poor oral hygiene. Prevalence of smoking, tobacco chewing habit, and alcohol consumption among the construction workers was found to be 21.6%, 59.9%, and 37.3%, respectively. The dependence of OHI-S and DMFT on age, gender, and habits such as smoking, tobacco chewing, and alcohol consumption was found to be 21.5% and 39.6%, respectively. Conclusion: Migrant construction workers in Belagavi had a high caries prevalence, poor oral hygiene status, and a high prevalence of deleterious habits such as tobacco use. These results emphasize the necessity of awareness and dental health education programs to improve the oral health of construction workers.

Objective — to determine some dental markers of endogenous intoxication in the treatment of patients with non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Materials and methods. Examinations involved 44 patients with verified NAFLD diagnosis (the main group). The control group consisted of 20 somatically healthy subjects, representative in terms of gender and age. Clinical dental examinations were carried out twice, before and after the treatment, with an interval of 10 days. A questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the discipline of oral hygiene care. The level of oral hygiene was studied using the Greene–Vermillion index. The level of endotoxin in venous blood and oral fluid was assessed by immunoenzymatic method. The degree of endogenous intoxication was evaluated based on the structural and optical properties of a drop of oral fluid on a glass slide using an electron microscope. An analysis of correlations between non‑invasive and invasive techniques has been carried out. Results. More than half of the patients in the main group (61.3%) cleaned their teeth once a day. The value of the Greene–Vermillion oral hygiene index was equal to 2.3 points, which indicated an unsatisfactory state of hygienic care. In patients of the main group, the level of endotoxemia was equal to 0.9 EU/ml, and the level of LPS in oral fluid was 33.5 U/ml, which exceeded similar parameters in the control group by 2 and 1.6 times, respectively. In the micro preparations of oral fluid facies, 71.0% of patients in the main group had markers of endogenous intoxication (EI) of 3rd grade, 20.4% — EI of 2nd grade, and only 9.0% had EI of 1st grade. After 10 days, according to the re‑questioning data, 72.7% of patients in the main group followed full hygienic care of the oral cavity, and the Greene–Vermillion index decreased to 1.6 points, which was assessed as a satisfactory condition. Bakgrund Inom Hälso- och sjukvården har trycket på vården ökat markant och beräknas öka ännu mer. Allt fler äldre lever längre och allt oftare som multisjuka. Detta ställer större krav på vården och sjuksköterskorna. När tid och rutiner inte finns och där kompetens saknas och samarbetsnivån är låg, ökar riskerna inom omvårdnaden att alla moment inte blir utförda. Munvård är ett område som många gånger utelämnas. Utebliven munvård kan leda tillökad sjukdom med resultatet längre vårdtider. Varken bra för patienten, sjuksköterskan eller hälso-och sjukvården. Denna litteraturstudie vill därför undersöka vilka erfarenheter sjuksköterskor har av munvård hos äldre sjuka patienter. Syfte Syftet med denna litteraturöversikt är att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av munvård hos äldre sjuka patienter. Metod En strukturerad litteraturöversikt av kvalitativa och kvantitativa vetenskapliga artiklar med inslag av liknande metodik som används vid systematiska översikter från databaserna PubMed samt CINAHL. Litteraturstudien är baserad på elva artiklar, en kvantitativ, sju kvalitativa och tre med mixad metod. Resultat Litteraturstudien visar att sjuksköterskans erfarenhet av munvård är betydelsefull, viktig och nödvändig. Studierna framhåller vikten av rätt förutsättningar för att utföra god munvård och nämner då tid, kunskap, tvärprofessionella samarbeten samt positiv inställning. När dessa förutsättningar finns, utförs god munvård framgångsrikt men närtid, resurser och kunskap saknas prioriteras munvården bort inom omvårdnaden. Slutsats När organisationen ger rätt förutsättningar med bra uppdaterad utbildning, tydliga processer och klinisk vägledning prioriteras munvården och utförs korrekt. Aim The purpose of this literature review is to describe nurses' experiences of oral care in elderly ill patients. Method A structured literature review of qualitative and quantitative scientific articles, incorporating similar methodologies to those used in systematic reviews, sourced from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The literature study is based on eleven articles, consisting of one quantitative, seven qualitative, and three employing mixed methods. Results The literature review shows that the nurse's experience in oral care is significant, important and necessary. The studies highlight the importance of the right conditions for performing good oral care and mention time, knowledge, interprofessional collaborations and a positive attitude. When these conditions are present, good oral care is carried out successfully, but when time, resources and knowledge are lacking, oral care is prioritized away from nursing. With the objective of assessing the periodontal health status, treatment needs, and oral hygiene habits of the population of Mérida, in Mexico, a descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. Four hundred forty individuals individually completed a questionnaire on oral health, oral hygiene habits, and quality of life. Additionally, a complete clinical dental examination was performed for each. For the statistical analysis, continuous variables (means and standard deviation) and categorical variables (frequencies) were studied. The associations were made using the analysis of variance test for continuous variables and the Chi-square test for categorical variables. The critical value to identify statistically significant differences was P < .05. The main concern of the population was the possible untreated caries they thought they had, with 36.21% followed by pain with 14.62%. Possible periodontal issues were the main discomfort for only 9%. The percentage of the sample that required periodontal intervention by a specialist was 21.14%. Statistically significant differences were found between age, place of residence, socioeconomic level, and schooling. There are great deficiencies in oral health in the studied group, which is accompanied by a great need for periodontal treatment. Periodontal health is closely related to oral hygiene, so the related sociocultural level should also be taken into account for the study of oral health in the most vulnerable populations. It is crucial to establish strategies to promote oral health.

Background Oral care with gel is a common method for preventing aspiration in high-risk patients. An oral care gel is used to clean and moisturize the oral cavity. However, the effects of gel care on the oral bacteria remain unclear. In this pilot study, we described a matching transformation system (MA-T) for elderly high-risk patients. MA-T is an on-demand aqueous chlorine dioxide solution that provides excellent safety and has various antimicrobial activities, even in the presence of abundant organic compounds. This study investigated the effects of MA-T gel in patients requiring nursing care. Materials and methods Patients who were hospitalized for nursing care were included in this study. No drugs and foods were administered orally. Oral bacteria and intraoral humidity were examined by daily care using MA-T gel. Moreover, oral membranous substances were analyzed and material from the oral cavity was cultured on selective media for identifying opportunistic organisms. Results Membranous substances were present in the oral cavities of all patients. The number of bacteria decreased, and oral moisture improved, after treatment with MA-T gel. Moreover, oral humidity was also controlled with the continued use of MA-T gel. MA-T gels should be used not only for professional care but also on a daily basis for better oral care. Furthermore, the results of bacterial cultures showed that MA-T controls the propagation of opportunistic bacterial infections. Conclusion Membranous substances may be observed in the oral cavity of individuals requiring nursing care for tube feeding. The results of this pilot study suggest that MA-T, a novel disinfectant, can be used for oral care in the elderly to reduce the risk of aspiration-pneumonia.

Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats är att beskriva vilka munvårdsåtgärder som är mest effektiva avseende preventionen av VAP och därmed bör användas i intensivvårdssjuksköterskans dagliga arbete. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe which oral care measures are the most effective in the prevention of VAP and therefore should be used by the intensive care nurse in the daily working routine. Method: A systematic literature study with a qualitative inductive approach was used. A total of 17 studies were included in this essay. Results: Two main categories were identified as well as two subcategories. The adoption of oral care protocols showed a statistically significant decrease of VAP, and chlorhexidine can be effective against VAP however there are also other antibacterial solutions which effectively prevent VAP. Conclusion: In order to contribute to increased patient safety intensive care nurses should use an oral care protocol to prevent VAP. In addition to the protocol toothbrushes should be replaced regularly, and the ward should oversee the possibility of including dentists to optimize the oral care. Oral care requires additional research so that in the future it is possible to use only the oral care procedures that have been proven to be effective.

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att utföra en metodutveckling där individuella skenor framställs för att möjliggöra en standardiserad mätning av plackansamling på titanfixturers ytor samtidigt som det ska ge möjlighet för att bibehålla god munhygien. Material och metod: Sjuttio titanfixturer ytbehandlades på tre sätt: sandblästring, etsning och implantoplastik. Studien involverade elva deltagare och det framställdes elva gipsmodeller utifrån avtryck. Tolv individuella skenor utformades med modelleringsvax med hänsyn till varje deltagares bettförhållanden. Kallpolymeriserad ortokryl användes vid framställning av skenor och cylindrar. Totalt framställdes sjuttio cylindrar, där två öppningar skapades. För vardera individuella skena innefattades sex fixturer, en från varje behandlingsmetod. Fixturerna placerades enligt en randomisera mall som innefattade sex olika variationer. Each individual splint included six fixtures, one from each treatment method. The fixture placement followed a randomized pattern, comprising six different variations. The twelfth splint deviated from the randomized pattern and contained four fixtures: two from implantoplasty, one etched, and one sandblasted. Results: The method development for measuring plaque accumulation on different surface-treated fixtures using individual splints in relation to good oral hygiene, was successfully conducted. The results demonstrated that the rough surface following sandblasting exhibited the highest plaque accumulation (0,604 mm), whereas implantoplasty showed the lowest plaque accumulation (0,342 mm). Conclusion: Within the scope of this study, the following conclusion can be drawn: By individual splints, it is possible to measure plaque accumulation on etched, sandblasted, and implantoplasty-treated titanium fixtures. Bakgrund: Den orala hälsan har påverkan på individers välbefinnande, livskvalitet och allmän hälsa. Hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal bör ha kunskaper om orala hälsans risk och friskfaktorer samt hantering av symtom. Munvårdsutbildning är avgörande för att utföra åtgärder som krävs vid ohälsa, för att förebygga munhälsa och för att skapa förståelse om vikten av samarbete mellan tandvård och hälso- och sjukvården. Syftet: Syftet med studien var att studera om kunskap inom oral hälsa och munvård ökar genom att genomföra munvårdsutbildningen som görs i samverkan mellan sjuksköterske- och tandhygienistutbildningen. Material och metod: En interventionsstudie genomfördes med pappersenkäter. Urvalet var sjuksköterskestudenter i termin två på Jönköping University. Metodanalys genomfördes med fisher exact test samt en kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Respondenternas kunskap inom oral hälsa och munvård ökade efter utförd munvårdsutbildning och det visades en statistisk signifikant skillnad på de flesta frågor före respektive efter. Utifrån respondenternas reflektioner framkom tre kategorier, erhöll ny kunskap, Fick förståelse för munvård och sambandet mellan oral-allmän hälsa och Behöver praktisk träning. Background: Oral health care has an impact on individuals' well-being, quality of life and general health. Healthcare professionals should have knowledge of oral health risks and health factors as well as treatment of symptoms. Oral health education is crucial to carry out measures required in case of bad oral health and to create an understanding of the importance of cooperation between dental care and health care. Aim: The purpose of this study was to study whether knowledge in oral health and oral care increases by implementing oral health education in collaboration between the nursing program and the dental hygienist program. Method: An intervention study was conducted with paper questionnaires. The selection was nursing students in semester two at Jönköping University. Method analysis was conducted with fisher exact test and a qualitative content analysis. Results: The respondents' knowledge of oral health and oral care increased after oral health education and there was a statistically significant difference in most questions before and after. Based on the respondents' reflections, three categories emerged, Gained new knowledge, Gained an understanding of oral care and the link between oral-general health, Need practical training. Conclusion: Nursing students' knowledge of oral health and oral care increased after oral health education. The education contributed to future clinical skills and provided insight into interprofessional collaboration.

Literature suggests that deficiencies among dental professional students in both knowledge and awareness of human papillomavirus (HPV) and its association with oropharyngeal cancers (OPC), as well as its risk factors implicating the prevalence of HPV, may be due to the lack of HPV-related education during professional schooling. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an online learning tool to educate dental and dental hygiene students about HPV and its association with OPC, rapidly evolving disease patterns, and dental professionals' role in HPV-associated OPC prevention efforts. A three-section online learning module was developed to improve dental professionals' comfort levels with, and knowledge of, HPV. The participants were recruited to participate in surveys before and after the intervention. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis were computed to study the effectiveness of the modules in improving the knowledge of students about this topic. Pre-intervention survey participants totaled 142, and 107 participants answered the post-intervention survey. The majority of the study participants had some baseline understanding of HPV prior to accessing the modules. After reviewing the modules, there was a statistically significant increase in the proportion of respondents who identified OPC (p = 0.01), vaginal cancer (0.02), vulvar cancer (0.04), and penile cancer (0.01) as associated with HPV. A gap in the understanding of HPV vaccine-eligible groups was noted in almost half of the participants; while most participants could correctly identify that boys and girls aged 9-12 years were eligible to get the vaccine, the gap in knowledge in this regard was related to "25-year-old with an abnormal pap result." Due to the evolving nature of this topic, there is a need to find new and effective methods of disseminating HPV-related information among the existing and future dental workforce.

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att utföra en metodutveckling där individuella skenor framställs för att möjliggöra en standardiserad mätning av plackansamling på titanfixturers ytor samtidigt som det ska ge möjlighet för att bibehålla god munhygien. Material och metod: Sjuttio titanfixturer ytbehandlades på tre sätt: sandblästring, etsning och implantoplastik. Studien involverade elva deltagare och det framställdes elva gipsmodeller utifrån avtryck. Tolv individuella skenor utformades med modelleringsvax med hänsyn till varje deltagares bettförhållanden. Kallpolymeriserad ortokryl användes vid framställning av skenor och cylindrar. Totalt framställdes sjuttio cylindrar, där två öppningar skapades. För vardera individuella skena innefattades sex fixturer, en från varje behandlingsmetod. Fixturerna placerades enligt en randomisera mall som innefattade sex olika variationer. Bakgrund Inom Hälso- och sjukvården har trycket på vården ökat markant och beräknas öka ännu mer. Allt fler äldre lever längre och allt oftare som multisjuka. Detta ställer större krav på vården och sjuksköterskorna. När tid och rutiner inte finns och där kompetens saknas och samarbetsnivån är låg, ökar riskerna inom omvårdnaden att alla moment inte blir utförda. Munvård är ett område som många gånger utelämnas. Utebliven munvård kan leda tillökad sjukdom med resultatet längre vårdtider. Varken bra för patienten, sjuksköterskan eller hälso-och sjukvården. Denna litteraturstudie vill därför undersöka vilka erfarenheter sjuksköterskor har av munvård hos äldre sjuka patienter. Syfte Syftet med denna litteraturöversikt är att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av munvård hos äldre sjuka patienter. Metod En strukturerad litteraturöversikt av kvalitativa och kvantitativa vetenskapliga artiklar med inslag av liknande metodik som används vid systematiska översikter från databaserna PubMed samt CINAHL. Litteraturstudien är baserad på elva artiklar, en kvantitativ, sju kvalitativa och tre med mixad metod. Resultat Litteraturstudien visar att sjuksköterskans erfarenhet av munvård är betydelsefull, viktig och nödvändig. Studierna framhåller vikten av rätt förutsättningar för att utföra god munvård och nämner då tid, kunskap, tvärprofessionella samarbeten samt positiv inställning. När dessa förutsättningar finns, utförs god munvård framgångsrikt men närtid, resurser och kunskap saknas prioriteras munvården bort inom omvårdnaden. Slutsats När organisationen ger rätt förutsättningar med bra uppdaterad utbildning, tydliga processer och klinisk vägledning prioriteras munvården och utförs korrekt. Inom specialistvården är god munvård självklar, med bättre resultat än övriga vårdavdelningar. Fungerande tvärprofessionella samarbeten ökar den positiva inställningen och den äldre sjuka patientens hälsa. More and more elderly people are living longer, but more and more often with multiple illnesses. This places greater demands on care and nurses. When time and routines do not exist and where competence and cooperation are low, there are increased risks in care that not all steps are carried out. Oral care is an area that is often left out. Lack of oral care can lead to increased disease with the result being longer treatment times. Not good for the patient, nurse or health care. This literature study therefore wants to investigate what experiences nurses have with oral care in elderly ill patients. Aim The purpose of this literature review is to describe nurses' experiences of oral care in elderly ill patients. Method A structured literature review of qualitative and quantitative scientific articles, incorporating similar methodologies to those used in systematic reviews, sourced from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The literature study is based on eleven articles, consisting of one quantitative, seven qualitative, and three employing mixed methods. Results The literature review shows that the nurse's experience in oral care is significant, important and necessary. The studies highlight the importance of the right conditions for performing good oral care and mention time, knowledge, interprofessional collaborations and a positive attitude. When these conditions are present, good oral care is carried out successfully, but when time, resources and knowledge are lacking, oral care is prioritized away from nursing. Conclusions When the organization provides the right conditions for nurses, it leads to updated training, clear processes and clinical guidance, then oral care is prioritized and performed correctly. In specialist care, good oral care goes without saying with better results than other care departments. Functional interprofessional

Background Oral care with gel is a common method for preventing aspiration in high-risk patients. An oral care gel is used to clean and moisturize the oral cavity. However, the effects of gel care on the oral bacteria remain unclear. In this pilot study, we described a matching transformation system (MA-T) for elderly high-risk patients. MA-T is an on-demand aqueous chlorine dioxide solution that provides excellent safety and has various antimicrobial activities, even in the presence of abundant organic compounds. This study investigated the effects of MA-T gel in patients requiring nursing care. Materials and methods Patients who were hospitalized for nursing care were included in this study. No drugs and foods were administered orally. Oral bacteria and intraoral humidity were examined by daily care using MA-T gel. Moreover, oral membranous substances were analyzed and material from the oral cavity was cultured on selective media for identifying opportunistic organisms. Results Membranous substances were present in the oral cavities of all patients. The number of bacteria decreased, and oral moisture improved, after treatment with MA-T gel. Moreover, oral humidity was also controlled with the continued use of MA-T gel. MA-T gels should be used not only for professional care but also on a daily basis for better oral care. Furthermore, the results of bacterial cultures showed that MA-T controls the propagation of opportunistic bacterial infections. Conclusion Membranous substances may be observed in the oral cavity of individuals requiring nursing care for tube feeding. The results of this pilot study suggest that MA-T, a novel disinfectant, can be used for oral care in the elderly to reduce the risk of aspiration-pneumonia.

Background: This study was conducted to determine access to dental services in the elderly with hypertension in Peru. Methods: Observational, analytical, and cross-sectional design. Data used for analysis in this research was collected from the Demographic and Family Health Survey of Peru (ENDES) from 2019 to 2021. Results: A Poisson regression analysis was performed a weighted sample for calculating prevalence ratio (PR) with their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). The multiple regression analysis did not find among the factors associated with the probability of using the dental health service, since neither the time less than two years of hypertension (PR=0.74, 95%CI 0.53 – 1.02); nor from 2 to 4 years (PR = 0.97, CI 95% 0.86 – 1.09); neither a time of hypertension from 5 years or more (PR = 0.94, CI 95% 0.85 – 1.03) were associated. Conclusion: The study concluded that hypertensive patient over 60 years of age, despite a previous diagnosis of hypertension or not, does not attend dental service, reflecting a lack of interest and a greater risk exposure to cardiovascular complications associated with oral health.

The possibility to utilize the antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of essential oils (EOs) in dentistry is recognized and best seen in the design of EO-based mouthwashes. The up-to-date results, obtained with the most commonly used formulation being consisted of thymol, eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate (Listerine), proved its efficacy against plaque and gingival inflammation. However, novel alcohol-free products remain to be further investigated. Commercially available mouthwash containing curcumin, clove oil, mentha oil, eucalyptol, thymol and tea tree oil, and the mouthwash based on ginger EO (a-zingiberene, b-bisabolene, b-sesquiphellandrene, curcumene), reduced plaque index and improved periodontal status of the patients. The plaque index was also reduced and overall healing was improved after the surgical removal of the third molar by mouthwash containing John wort oil. In addition, Cinnamomum zeylanicum EO-based mouthwash and mouthwash containing peppermint oil were efficient against stomatitis and xerostomia, respectively. In addition to beneficial effects achieved in the mouth, i.e. at the appropriate site of application, novel investigations pointed-out that EO-based mouthwashes could be recognized as efficient in the reduction of bacterial and viral aerosols. This has been shown for Listerine, and for several mouthwashes containing following active substances of plants' EO origin: a-farnesene, b-farnesene, farnesol, nerolidol, a-bulnesene, eremanthin, b-sesquiphellandrene, spiroether, cinnamylacetate, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, menthol, and carvacrol. This finding could be of special interest, in order to be included in further clinical studies related to COVID -19 pandemic.

Background: The aim of this research is to evaluate the periodontal health of patients with Parkinson Disease (PD) in a Spanish cohort. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 104 patients with PD (mean age: 66.19+9.3 years) and 106 controls (mean age: 59.26+14.11 years). A pre-designed clinical protocol was implemented, which included a standardized epidemiological index for periodontal disease (CPITN), clinical attachment loss (CAL), tooth-loss, full mouth plaque index (FMPI), and oral hygienic habits. Univariate descriptions and comparative analysis were performed. Results: The majority of PD patients presented good oral hygienic habits. There were no significant differences in relation to CPITN, periodontitis, gingival recessions and tooth loss. However, moderate/severe CAL (p=0.027) and FMPI (p=0.003) was higher in the PD group. Conclusions: There were no differences on periodontitis and tooth loss between both groups. The higher number of advanced CAL and presence of biofilm in the PD group could be related to the difficulties to perform an effective tooth brushing due to this neurological disorder.

La caries dental y la enfermedad periodontal tienen una alta prevalencia entre la población infantil. Los centros de cuidado diario a cargo del Ministerio de Inclusión Económica y Social, pretenden a través de actividades coordinadas y organizadas brindar atención a las familias con hijos entre 0 a 5 años, brindando las mejores condiciones para el desarrollo de los niños. La Universidad Hemisferios consciente que el servicio a la comunidad es un punto importante para conectar las actividades académicas en las aulas de clase con el servicio a la comunidad a la cual se pertenece, viene desarrollando desde el 2020 actividades en los 6 CDI de la ciudad de Quito, realizando actividades de prevención y educación en salud. Las acciones realizadas de forma organizada y direccionada por docentes y estudiantes motivados en el servicio a la comunidad, ha permitido atender con éxito durante estos años a 1000 niños de entre 0 a 5 años y acercar a 300 estudiantes a actividades comunitarias. Las intervenciones organizadas y articuladas han permitido alcanzar los objetivos institucionales expuestos.

In order to achieve the multi-claim products required for dental-health-care and hygiene, it is indispensable for the formulator to use a wide range of ingredients however, with the advent of technology the chemically synthesised products are not of demand in the market as they have side effects and are considered to unsafe for human use. This places quite a number of demands on the use of PBNPs in the development process. Use of PBNPs innovations in the areas of pharmaceutical technology have contributed significantly to the formulation of dental-health-care products with superior efficacy as well as other attributes that may contribute to clinical response and patient acceptability. Improved clinical efficacy and tolerability, along with conditioning signals, should encourage patient compliance with oral hygiene. Cuminum cyminum seeds are being habitually used in traditional cuisines of different cultures. In India, it is used in both whole and ground form as a traditional ingredient to make dishes without perceptive medicinal knowledge/ properties behind. In Kerala, decoction of cumin seeds is used for drinking (Jeera water). In Tamilnadu, cumin seeds are the key ingredient of Rasam. Fruit of Solanum lycopersicum is one of the important savoury vegetable used in traditional Indian cuisines. The oil of Cocos nucifera fruits are used in cooking in Kerala and TamilNadu. In the present study, composition (paste) prepared by mixing of 2 drops of S. lycopersicum fruit juice, 2 drops of C. nucifera and 1g of C. cyminum seed powder were tested on 100 subjects with felt bad breath. Results of the present study was found to be effective in controlling bad breath (odour) in 74 subjects after the treatment (period of clinical trial) except 09 of 83 subjects who were diabetic. Full Text, Thesis (PhD Doctorate), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), School of Applied Psychology, Griffith Health, Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in childhood, and a key public health burden affecting preschoolers worldwide. Despite being a highly preventable disease, almost half of Australian 5-year-olds have dental caries experience. Parents are recommended to perform twice-daily parental supervised toothbrushing using fluoride toothpaste until children are at least 5 years of age. Parental involvement plays a central role in the development of oral self-care habits with the preschool years offering a crucial period for building and transferring lifelong good oral hygiene behaviours. However, the high prevalence of ECC, along with recent self-report evidence, indicates parents are not meeting the recommended preventive behavioural guidelines of twice-daily parental supervised toothbrushing for their preschool-aged children. This highlights a pressing need for theory- and evidence-based strategies for promoting regular parental supervised toothbrushing among parents of preschool-aged children. The aims of this PhD program of research were to identify the social cognitive factors associated with the oral hygiene behaviours of preschoolers, and to apply the health action process approach (HAPA) to predict and promote regular parental supervised toothbrushing, investigated through three studies. Study 1 was a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at identifying the parental social cognitive factors associated with the oral hygiene behaviours of preschoolers. Five bibliographic databases were searched. A study was eligible for inclusion when it reported an association between a parental social cognitive factor and an oral hygiene behaviour in the targeted age cohort. Meta-analyses were performed when there were at least four independent effect sizes (k>3). We examined school children in the Maasai Mara North Conservancy for extraction of permanent mandibular incisors and primary canines, which form part of a long-held tradition in the Maasai community in Kenya. Objective: Review information on oral hygiene habits and examination of study participants, their oral hygiene procedures, and the presence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Aggregatibacter aphrophilus in their oral cavities. Data sources: Three publications in 2018 and 2021 on traditional dental practices, the prevalence of JP2/Non-JP2 Genotypes of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and A. aphrophilus, and inhibition of leukotoxic activity by herbal plants used in oral hygiene procedures by children from Maasai Mara. Results and conclusions: The results obtained indicated that of the 284 participants used in the three studies, 61% of them had had their primary canines extracted, among whom a majority (95%) had two mandibular central incisors missing. The microbiological findings in saliva and plaque samples harvested from the participants revealed that 72% of the oral samples had A. actinomycetemcomitans, with three of them being positive for the highly leukotoxic JP2 genotype of this bacterium. The prevalence of A. aphrophilus was even higher, which may affect the virulence potential of A. actinomycetemcomitans. Most of the adolescents used commercial toothbrushes and toothpaste for their oral hygiene practice, but also plant-derived chewing sticks for daily teeth cleaning. Interestingly, all the participants used Warburgia ugandensis as the material for chewing stick, and in vitro tests showed that its extract efficiently neutralized the leukotoxin that is expressed by A. actinomycetemcomitans.
